Chasing Pirates

Publisher: Terrie L. Purdum Editor in Chief: Shannon Coates Graphic Design: Melahn Cable, Photojournalists: Greg and Beverly Wise Photographers: Lynn Pelham, Brion Price, Peter Hakansson

A few issues ago,

we introduced Anthony Williams, CGCS, CGM who wrote about Turf Pirates. They support all things turf-related from EIFG (Environmental Institute for Golf) events to tickets for local causes. They know that they can’t solve all of the world’s problems, but they make a small dent in the course of things. They always show up, show out, and enjoy the fellowship of their maties. They volunteer; they master their craft; they listen and they spin tales of hope. Turf Pirates are never impressed with intentions but they always appreciate any deeds done well, large or small. Turf Pirates are masters in the art of living. They make their way seeing no difference in their work, play, love or religion. They pursue their vision of excellence in all things showing #turfliferespect. Some may say they are working while others feel they are playing. To them they are always doing both. Turf Pirates raise their glass to those who grow the grass. Anthony is a Turf Pirate. He was likely born a Turf Pirate on his family farm in Indian Creek, Georgia growing Coastal Bermuda grass hay. He went on to embrace a Pirate’s life over the years. His then girlfriend, wife and long-term wench of 36 years (LOL) got on board the day he became a Turf Pirate so she knew what she was getting into. Thankfully she only had to deal with the Turf Life and swards (the upper layer of soil covered with grass.) rather than swords.

One of my favorite things to do when coming into a gated golf community is to mess with the gate guard by saying I am here to rape and pillage and steal some bicycles. I ask “Arghhh.. you OK with that?” and they usually laugh and wave me through. Norah Jones read my mind.. and that shite is scary “Well, I’m having the squeems While the silliest thing’s Floppin’ around in my brain And I try not to dream But them possible schemes Swim around… And I don’t know how To slow it down Oh, my mind’s racing From chasing pirates.”

Michigan’s Magnificent Ten Anchors America’s Summer Golf Capital

The Quarry #3

The first time I traveled to Northern Michigan, I knew I’d be back. Seduced by gorgeous Lake Michigan panoramas along rapturous shorelines, “frozen in a golden era” small towns anywhere, and breathtaking nature, it was wild to process that anywhere this idyllic still exists today. Meticulous conditioning, memorable scenery, shot values and unmatched variety were BOYNE Golf’s selling points and its signature properties really delivered. Laying eyes on the iconic Victorianstyle Inn at Bay Harbor along the beaming shoreline of Lake Michigan and Little Traverse Bay, it was immediately clear why many call this “The Pebble Beach of the Midwest.” The Inn at Bay Harbor features 116 guest rooms and suites and 35 twoand three-bedroom cottages at the Lakeside Cottages and Cottages at Crooked Tree. All provide views of the renowned Million Dollar Sunsets. First on the hit list was the region’s premier golfing experience, Bay Harbor Golf Club and its three nines that are combined into unique 18-hole layouts. The terrain, variety and the views are unmatched. There are moments when 10

you’re playing along the coastline and glance to the water, and you’ll swear you’re on an ocean. The Quarry nine (built on the site of a former working quarry) is an eye-popping thrill ride with each hole daring you to play hero shots. The Preserve is a parkland routing that plays well and compliments the lofty standards of the Links and Quarry. Across the street, scenic 18-hole Crooked Tree Golf Club deliv-

ers stellar panoramic views and an underrated stretch of quality, finelymaintained golf holes.

Boyne Highlands Resort Resembling a Scottish country estate, Boyne Highlands is a cozy escape just 20 minutes north of Bay Harbor. With four different courses, Boyne Highlands makes for an ideal one-stop buddies trip. The timeless, strategic parkland al-

Arthur Hills #5 lure of the Heather (the original Boyne course by Robert Trent Jones, Sr.) and the natural beauty of the Arthur Hills course, which features a ten story drop from tee to green on the 13th, stand tall as must-plays on a visit to Northern Michigan. The Heather (along with Links/Quarry ay Bay Harbor) is also on Golf Digest’s list of America’s 100 Greatest Public Courses and in 2019 was named the National Golf Course Owners Association’s Golf Course of the Year. The Donald Ross Memorial is an extremely well-executed tribute course composed of holes inspired by famous Ross designs that have collectively hosted three Ryder Cups, eight U.S. Amateurs, 11 PGA Championships and 14 U.S. Opens. More than being a thoughtful well-executed tribute course the Ross stands apart as a great startfinish experience. Recent renovations make The Moor course more enjoyable for those game may not be “tournament ready”.

Boyne Mountain Resort offers the walkable and family-friendly allure of a European alpine village. The Spa at Boyne Mountain is Michigan’s largest at 18,500 square feet, and terrific dining options abound at Boyne Mountain too. Boyne Mountain offers two courses, The Alpine and The Monument, which both offer tremendous views of Deer Lake as you zigzag through tree-lined slopes before winding down to tamer, rolling terrain. They each begin with a scenic 10-minute cart ride up the ski hill to their respective first tees. BOYNE Golf is easy to access from 17 major U.S. cities through Cherry

Capital Airport (TVC) in nearby Traverse City and is centered amid one of America’s most beautiful vacation spots. Scenic Lake Michigan beach towns Charlevoix, Harbor Springs, and Petoskey are minutes away, and making a side trip to historic Mackinac Island is easy. This area has some of the best and most memorable before-or after-golf activities anywhere, with marinas, wineries and waterfront dining abound. Sleep Well with A L T W E L L Are you sleeping on your recovery? One of the most important aspects of an athlete’s recovery routine is getting enough high-quality rest, which we know isn’t always easy to do. Sleep has been shown to enhance athletic performance by helping the body restore itself, reducing the risk of injury, and improving competitive success¹. Experts recommend that athletes get between 7 and 9 hours of sleep nightly 2. So how can you get the best rest with-

12

out tossing and turning? CBD may help support your sleep routine. CBD, a nonintoxicating cannabinoid found in the hemp plant, works by binding to special cannabinoid receptors in the brain and regulating the body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS), which controls stress, mood, sleep, and more. Research shows that CBD may help increase total sleep time and improve the ability to fall asleep because it enhances the endocannabinoid system3. Modern wellness brand ALTWELL has the sleep solutions you need. Their Restful Sleep Gummies deliver 25mg CBD from broad spectrum hemp extract to help calm your body and mind. They also contain melatonin, a hormone that regulates the sleep-wake cycle, and Ltheanine, an amino acid that supports sleep. The gummies come in delicious flavors like Grapefruit, Ginger Peach and Honey Citrus, so they taste like a nighttime treat. ALTWELL also offers Restful Sleep Softgels, which also contain CBD from broad spectrum hemp extract plus, melatonin. Take a gummy or softgel 15 to 30 minutes before bed and you’ll wake up feeling energized, refreshed, and ready to conquer the course.

A Visit to Capitol Hill March on Montgomery – Crosswalk

Imagine the adventure of

meeting a Legislator, a Senator, and a Judge all in one location. Okay, at this point you all have figured it out that we are just outside Montgomery, Alabama in Prattville playing the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail. RTJ Capitol Hill is part of the incredible golf trail throughout Alabama that attracts millions of golfers per year to take on the challenge of these sometimes… no… all the time… golf facilities. We played golf one day of our Capitol Hill trip with a couple, that each year… set out to play every facility on the Golf Trail. If I remember correctly, they were on day 5 of a 21-day adventure. They rotate the courses at each location, so each year is a different golf course. RTJ Capitol Hill is set on land that is so remarkably different, that Master Architect, Robert Trent Jones had a blank canvas to create 3 distinctively different course layouts. The Senator is a Scottish-Links style course. Each hole has an exciting surprise. When we arrived at the first hole the starter admitted this 14

The Senator – Scottish-Style Golf Adventure was going to be tough. Every hole had blind spots. His advice… that panned out to be very true… “Play to the yardage stakes.” That is what you could see from the tee and it truly was the safest was to navigate this course. Scottish-Links style until you

played the 17th hole that wrapped it way around the beautiful Marriott Hotel to host your stay at Capitol Hill. This hole was a very unique in its own way offer a play safe style mode with placements… or “Go For It” mode that had you risking the carry Golf Central • Volume 22, Issue 5

17th Green with the clubhouse in the background across the ravine. Choice is yours! Miss it and you are looking at a serious Double Bogey on your card. The Senator is the home course for the Symetra Tour “Guardian Championship” that is played in September. The Legislator – The more traditional of the 3 courses. But… don’t let your guard down… and make sure you have the camera up when you make the turn… when making your way down to the back nine via the “Sky Bridge.” Better yet… let someone else shoot the photos on your way down. Playing your way through the native

cypress swamp will impress the best golfer and you work your way back to higher ground with a beautiful view of the finishing hole with the backdrop of the magnificent club house. The Judge – Wow… what can you say about the Judge, except that it carry’s it name very well. You will judge your game off what the Judge presents

you. The first tee is probably the most photographed hole in Alabama with a 200-foot vertical drop to the fairway blow. If this isn’t enough the green is built at the edge of the Alabama Rivera. Get used to that, because 14 holes align themselves with that same feel with bulkhead greens. The Judge is described as simply magnificent.

Take Time to Experience History With the State Capitol just minutes away… we needed to experience the deep rich history of Montgomery and the U.S. Civil Rights Movement. Starting in Selma, just 45 minutes away. We visited the location where the original Freedom Day march began, making their way through Selma and the historic landmarks to eventually cross the Alabama River and the Edmund Pettus Bridge. Staying in Montgomery for a few days, we found ourselves intrenched in finding historical sites around the city. Many were easily assessable within walking distance of our hotel downtown. We found ourselves wanting more. We found Wanda Howard Battle, our tour guide for the day. I would recommend this lady to everyone. She is from Montgomery. She is showing you “Her Town.” We saw the bench where Ms. Rosa Parks waited for that afternoon bus. We saw where Rosa lived in a modest community. We saw where Dr. Martin Luther King first preached and eventually to the window in the church where he wrote the speech… “I have a Dream.” The final walk to the Capitol for the marchers is marked with a crosswalk of footprints. Unless you were digging through the signs of history… you would not understand what that represented. We also experience the “Equal Justice Initiative” exhibit and Memorial Garden. What an amazing experience for everyone. However you decide to learn your history within the United States, visit Montgomery and spend a few days. Wow… what an experience. 16

Mount Dora Golf Club hosts inaugural Folds of Honor Summer Scramble

Yes Virginia,

Central Florida Golfers do play golf in the summer. 204 of them to be exact that teed in up for the Mount Dora Golf Club Folds of Honor Summer Scramble presented by G3 Development. Mount Dora Golf Club, located just outside historic downtown Mt. Dora (recognized as one of the 10 Most Charming Small Towns to Visit by Travel and Leisure in 2019), was built in 1944 and serves as a living memorial to Mount Dora’s military troops that served in World War II and all members of the Armed Forces ever since. The inaugural event held on Saturday August 7 raised $10,000 for the Florida Chapter of Folds of Honor - that is the equivalent of two annual Folds of Honor scholarships. Folds of Honor is a 501(C) (3) nonprofit organization that provides educational scholarships to the families of military men and women who have fallen or been disabled while on active duty in the United States armed forces. Founded in 2007, Folds of Honor

22

has awarded approximately 29,000 scholarships in all 50 states and some US territories including more than 4,500 in 2020 alone. G3 Development, based in Lake County, generously stepped up and was the title sponsor of the event. The company has an extensive portfolio of real estate developments in Central Florida and specializes in hands-on and collaborative construction design and management. In the end, G3’s scramble team proved victorious, winning the double shot-gun event and the stunning Folds of Honor “Championship Title Belt” with a score of 20 under par. Gold Star Daughter and Folds of Honor Scholarship recipient Ashlynn McCain spoke at the event about what Folds of Honor has meant to her and her family. “Our inaugural Folds of Honor event was a huge success,” said Luke Covey, General Manager of Mt. Dora Golf Club, “This was our largest charity event so far this year and we look forward to growing the event and doubling our donation to the Florida Chapter next year.” To learn more visit www.mtdoragolf. com; www.foldsofhonor.org. Finding A Golf Home – For Less Tips for those seeking their best golf life Golfers are moving to Florida and looking for a good deal. You may be one of them. Over the past 12 months, buyer demand to purchase a home in a gated golf community has increased to 65% of the marketplace (up from 51% this time last year). Tens-of-thousands of buyers are eyeing Florida for a “snow-bird” life and there are no signs of slowing down. As we learned in Econ 101, with increased demand comes an increase in pricing. We’ve seen and read about the marketplace for Florida real estate, it is strong with little inventory to be had in many golf centric markets. So how can you can find a golf home without overpaying? Here a few suggestions from myself and Golf Certified Real Estate Agent Doug Treadwell. Doug is the Broker/ Owner of Blue Ocean Real Estate in Naples, Florida.

Tip #1: New Construction:

You might be surprised, but there are still a number of developments under shovel around the Sunshine State. This new construction option could work well for your timing to transition and might come with great incentives to go under contract. Such as, a free golf membership, amenity access during construction, closing costs rebates, etc. Google is

24

certainly helpful to find these communities but if you’d like a guided tour to find your best fit options, leverage resources at Golf Life Navigators.

Tip #2: Be Flexible on Location:

We hear it all the time from buyers, “I can’t afford Jupiter, Florida…it is way too expensive for me.” Certainly, a market like Jupiter has its areas of higher expense but you can still be under the same weather just 10-15 miles to the west, north or south for that matter. There are over 100 golf communities in Palm Beach County to choose from with various levels of real estate options. Without question, there is one that will fit your budget while still calling Jupiter home.

Tip #3: Consider Bundled Communities: The term “bundled community” might have a few different meanings but in the golf industry, generally it means that the home purchase comes with a membership to the golf club and amenities. This option is a great one to consider for buyers with a limited budget and do not want to write another check for an initiation to the golf club. In addition, if there are 600 doors within the gates of the club, ultimately, you will have 600 households taking care of the community both from a financial perspective and governance. One final

thought to consider on bundled communities, at most of these communities you can rent your home (or unit) and transfer the membership for an extended period of time. This might be a great way to subsidize the mortgage costs a few months each year.

Tip #4: Start Small: In past surveys, we have found that the average Floridian will move 3-4 times after their initial move. If budget is tight, start with a condominium or villa. Yes, it might not have the pool and outdoor kitchen you dreamed of but at least will have that winter escape. Turn-key housing can also be stress-free if you are commuting or simply do not want to worry about lawn-care and other home ownership chores.

Tip #5: Non-Resident Membership: Twenty years ago, many clubs viewed their non-resident members as “stepchildren” to the community. But today, they are welcomed with open arms and often times make up a significant number of the club’s membership roster. By looking at real estate outside of the gates, your options will increase significantly and may help you stay within those original budget parameters. There are also a number of new developments popping up around the state that do not have golf. By purchasing new construction in one of these communities you can gain all of the lifestyle amenities desired without funding a golf course. Find a golf club within 5-10 miles down the road with a non-resident membership and you will have the best of both worlds – on target with your budget. One final thought. The right club/ home match involves more than what a search engine can provide. Save yourself time and hassle by tapping into the new technologies you’ll find at www. golflifenavigators.com. Also look out for a Golf Certified Real Estate Agent who can assist your search. These decorated agents have an in-depth background on golf homes and will know everything there is to know about the various options mentioned above. They’re out there, we work with them daily and highly recommend speaking to one before your search. Golf Central • Volume 22, Issue 5

Stone Mountain Lakemont Course

North Georgia– A Brilliant Fall Golf Destination By Mike May

As the calendar transitions from summer into fall, golfers in the South should set their sights on a trip to North Georgia for an autumn swing through the Georgia Golf Trail golf courses that are nestled in the northern extremes of the Peach State. In addition to North Georgia’s marvelous fall scenery, the golf courses represent a refreshing change of pace from the norm.

The sight-seeing, accommodation and dining options in North Georgia will also add to the appeal of your upcoming trek, which is easily accessible for those living in the neighboring states of Alabama, Tennessee, North Carolina, and South Carolina. For the sake of geographical convenience, consider starting and concluding this trip in the greater Atlanta area,

The Georgia Golf Trail Presented by which makes this a perfect trip for Atlanta-area golfers. “There isn’t a better golf getaway than a trip through North Georgia in the fall,” said Doug Hollandsworth, Founder, Georgia Golf Trail. “We have terrific mountain golf opportunities in Georgia.” This golf getaway should start at The Frog Golf Club (www.golfthefrog.com) in Villa Rica, Georgia -- just west of Atlanta, off I-20. The Frog is delightful. Here, the fairways are bordered by loblolly pines. Its gently rolling terrain is symbolic of the well-known Augusta National GC in Augusta, Georgia. During a late afternoon round at The Frog, the natural sounds from the nearby forest will remind you of a final-round Sunday at the Masters, minus the roars from patrons and the CBS cameras, of course. From The Frog, it’s a short ‘leap’ to the Stone Mountain Golf Club (www. stonemountaingolf.com), located within the Stone Mountain State Park, just east of Atlanta. Here, you have 36 holes of golf and a luxurious accommodation option, the Atlanta Evergreen Marriott at Stone Mountain Park. The two golf courses – Lakemont and Stonemont – are great examples of the high-quality golf found at many of Georgia’s state parks. At the Stone Mountain Golf Club, you will get a glimpse of the Mount Rushmore-like carvings on the side Golf Central • Volume 22, Issue 5

of Stone Mountain. And, the views of Stone Mountain Lake from the Marriott are peaceful and serene. I would suggest playing one course at the outset of this journey and the other one at the end. Both are excellent designs. After golf at Stone Mountain, head for the hills of North Georgia for golf at the Sky Valley Country Club in Sky Valley, Brasstown Valley Resort & Spa in Young Harris, and Innsbruck Golf Club in Helen. At Sky Valley (www.skyvalleycountryclub.com), the golf course sits in a valley which is totally surrounded by mountains. The

many tee shots struck from raised tees add an element of excitement to the golf experience at Sky Valley. The tee-togreen course conditions are exemplary. You will love playing golf at Sky Valley. And, when not playing golf, many Sky Valley residents are also playing croquet. For your accommodations and dining needs while at Sky Valley, stay and eat at the Dillard House (www.DillardHouse. com) in nearby Dillard, Georgia. Here, the accommodations are first-class. And, the family-style dining style will satisfy all hunger pains. By the way, the homemade sausage served for breakfast and the fried chicken for lunch and dinner are outstanding! And, the sweet iced tea is delicious. The Dillard House has been operating for more than a century. Next, head west toward Brasstown Valley (www. brasstownvalley.com). delightful, and scenic. The views of the surrounding mountains from the golf course are stunning. This golf course is in terrific shape. Afterwards, spend the night at the resort and eat at Brassie’s Grill. It’s a total escape! Your next golf destination is the Innsbruck Golf Club in Helen, but along the way, it’s worth stopping at the Unicoi State Park & Lodge (www.unicoilodge.com), located just outside Helen. Unicoi is a true outdoor playground for zip lining, hiking, canoeing, fishing, swimming, and mountain biking. And, the views of the surrounding mountains and forests are spectacular. If you need to disconnect from the grid, go visit Unicoi. Golf at Innsbruck (www.valhallaresorthotel.com) is true mountain golf. Some golf pundits have referred to Innsbruck as “Alpine mountain golf at its finest.” Here, it’s all about club selection as you will encounter as many uphill shots as you will downhill shots. The chance to play the downhill tee-shot on the par-three 15th hole is worth the price of admission. The Innsbruck golf experience is incomplete unless you stay at the adjacent Valhalla Hotel where you will be pampered and spoiled. While there, consider a trip into downtown Helen for German food. On your way back to Atlanta, stop by the Stone Mountain State Park for your final round at either Lakemont or Stonemont. It will be a fitting conclusion to an amazing trip that will be worthy of becoming an annual outing. OnCore Golf’s VERO X1 Higher launch, lower spin, greater distance and more control around the greens are attributes long-associated with the industry’s biggest brand name golf balls. According to independent testing recently conducted by equipment review website Golf EQ, OnCore Golf’s VERO X1 has unequivocally joined the elite Tour-caliber ball category. OnCore’s game-changing four-piece balls went up against Titleist Pro V1 and Pro V1x and outperformed the dynamic duo in Golf EQ’s driver and iron testing. It also finished atop the composite rankings with a total Golf EQ score of 372.68 versus 362.26 for ProV1 and 350.83 for ProV1x. The VERO X1 delivered 60% less side spin, resulting in significantly straighter drives. “The Golf EQ test results validate our primary objective with the VERO X1: to create a product that the best golfers in the world would objectively consider best-in-class,” says OnCore CEO Keith Blakely. “At $39.99 a dozen, the VERO X1 presents serious golfers with a tremendous value proposition in relation to performance.” OnCore has carved out a formidable position in the direct-to-consumer ball category over the past decade. Its three-ball lineup includes the high-compression VERO X1, award-winning mid-compression ELIXR and low-compression AVANT 55. The VERO X1 is a technological marvel, sporting a metal-infused mantle and enhanced perimeter-weighting yielding the highest allowable velocity off the club face and increased distance for every club in the bag. From the Golf EQ editors: “Overall, the VERO X1’s 4-piece construction and 80-84 compression rating provide a well-balanced performance profile, especially for golfers with 95 mph and above driver club head speeds,” according to Golf EQ editors. “The VERO X1 delivered a high launch and low spin performance profile that allowed our testers to pick up distance in irons and with their drivers compared to both the ProV1 and ProV1x.” More information visit www.oncoregolf.com.

Determine the Correct Speed and Improve Your Putting With Roll Maps The most common and costly scoring mistake for most amateur golfers is determining the correct SPEED when putting. Every professional golfer has a mental checklist they go through when reading a putt: length, green speed, slope, start-line, speed/firmness. Now you can learn to master this set-up routine with a putting guidebook that will turn you into a “strokes gained” putter and lower your scores. Roll Maps is a new and innovative green speed book that provides a quick and simple way to dial in the speed of your putts just like the pros. Each deck contains a set of 19 Roll Map cards for green speeds from 6 to 15 on the Stimpmeter. Select the Roll Map card from the set

to match the green speed of the course you’re playing. Each side of the Roll Map card shows a speed grid for uphill putts and downhill putts. The multi-color grid determines the amount of feet the ball must travel after counting one second (“one onethousand”). Putt to the one second spot on your start line and watch you ball roll into the hole. Making putts under pressure is infinitely easier when you can sim-

ply focus on rolling the ball on your intended start line with the correct speed.” Said Jeff Mocini, Inventor and CEO of Slopegraide, manufacturers of Roll Maps. “Roll Maps will give you the confidence to sink more 10-15 footers and that makes golf really fun!” Roll Maps are permitted under the Rules of Golf and can be used in competition. To learn more about Roll Maps visit www.slopegraide.com or call Jeff Mocini, 616-510-3592.

The First Youth Golf Academy in Uganda, Africa

AFRIYEA Golf Academy,

a youth golf Academy on the continent of Africa, is pleased to announce the official launch of the first golf academy in the region of East and central Africa and the first golf academy in Uganda, Africa. AFRIYEA Golf Academy is the first of its kind whose objective is to equip youth and adults, aged 6 – 22, in all corners of Uganda, with the primary skillset required to play golf. The mission of the academy is to challenge under-

30

served youth and children with special needs to prosper in life by instilling character development, life skills, and values through education and the game of golf. The academy is the brainchild of Isaiah Mwesige, who is the CEO of the academy. Born and raised in Fort Portal, Mwesige holds a diploma in Agro Forestry from Nyabyeya Forestry College in Masindi and a Bachelor’s Degree in Agriculture at Mountains of the Moon University in Fort Portal. He started as a master caddy at Toro Golf Club in Fort Portal, Uganda. He became a golfer and became a member of the club. “We started this project in September of 2020 with 30 students in partnership with Toro Golf Club,” said CEO Isaiah Mwesige. “During my time at Toro Golf Club I discovered a number of amateur

golfers that were turning professional and found a gap left in between as replacements were needed. I also found out that many kids wanted to play but it was hard to access the facilities. That pushed me to start the academy with the little resources I had along with help from several well-wishers.” In less than a year, the academy has produced one national golf player and many regional golf players in addition to two female coaches who have qualified to be on the national team for the year 2021-22. One underprivileged child has been able to attain an academic sponsorship through the efforts of the academy while others have received golf tournament sponsorships. This success has attracted more youngsters to embrace the academy. AFRIYEA Golf Academy is built on a strong foundation of some of the great players of Uganda, including Stephen Kasaija who is the head coach of the academy. Stephen is a former national team player and the only coach who took the Uganda golf team to the world cup in Japan in 2018. Golf Professionals Happy Robert, Adolf Muhumuza, David Kamulindwa, Andrew Mugume, Mackline Nsenga, Lillian Koowe are among others also rendering services to the academy. In addition to teaching golf skills, AFRIYEA is using golf as a platform to mobilize the young generation to work as change agents in conserving the environment. The academy has conducted several environmental conservation projects that are aimed at acquainting knowledge and skills of tree planting, plastic recycling, reuse and proper disposal through environmental debates, cleaning campaigns, story writGolf Central • Volume 22, Issue 5

ing, poems and practical work in climate smart farming. The academy has also signed a partnership agreement with the education department of Fort Portal City to enable it to expand a golf program to learning institutions to continue introducing children to playing and enjoying the sport of golf. The schools will launch inter school golf tournaments which have never happened in the history of golf in Uganda. The academy has a long-term plan of establishing the first golf school in the East African region. “We have been relying on my personal resources and other well-wishers to operate the academy. In order to grow and realize our plans, we’re looking to create partnerships with companies and golf coaches that can provide products and services to our students,” added Mwesige. “Please feel free to contact me at isaiahmwesige@gmail.com if you would like to discuss partnership opportunities.” For more information about AFRIYEA Golf Academy, visit: Facebook: @AFRIYEAGolfAcademy Instagram: @AFRIYEAGolfAcademy

Palm Beach County’s More Historical Golf Destinations North Palm Beach CC, courtesy of the Jack Nicklaus Design Group

While Florida is the home of more than 1,100 golf courses, the heartbeat of golf in the Sunshine State is Palm Beach County, which has more than 160 golf courses. Some of Palm Beach County’s more well-known layouts include: PGA National Golf Club in Palm Beach Gardens, the annual home of the PGA Tour’s Honda Classic; the ever-exclusive Seminole Golf Club in Tequesta hosted this year’s Walker Cup; the Ocean Course at the Breakers Hotel in Palm Beach is Florida’s oldest 18-hole golf course; and the LPGA has staged past events at the Wycliffe Golf & Country Club in Wellington and the

Palm Beach County’s four FHGT courses are the North Palm Beach CC, Lake Worth Beach GC, Delray Beach GC, and the Resort Course at the Boca Raton Hotel & Club. At one time, these golf courses were the cream of the crop for golf in Palm Beach County. These four courses are still great destinations, but they now share that distinction with other great golf courses around Palm Beach County. But, other local golf courses lack the cool, quaint and historical appeal which the North Palm Beach CC, Lake Worth Beach GC, Delray Beach GC, and the Resort Course all share.

It’s worth noting that baseball legend Babe Ruth -- the acclaimed Sultan of Swat --played here in the late 1920s. Designed by the legendary golf course architect Donald Ross, the Delray Beach Golf Club, a par-72 layout, has stood the test of time and remains as enjoyable to play now as it was back in the 1920s. Evan Bowser Wins Natioal Car Rental SFPGA Assistant Professional Championship Evan Bowser shot an 8-under 64 Tuesday to charge from four shots back and win the National Car Rental SFPGA Assistant Professional Championship at Wyndemere Country Club. Bowser, a PGA Assistant Professional at LaPlaya Golf Club in Naples, eagled the par-5 first hole when he hit a 3-iron to 15 feet and made the putt. He added three birdies on the next six holes to take the lead. “My No. 1 priority wasn’t to win; it was to finish in the top five to qualify for the national assistant championship,” Bowser said. “Once I got off to a great start, I knew I had a chance to win.” Bowser made three more birdies on the back nine, including holing a bunker shot at the 10th hole, to clinch the three-shot victory over three players. Bowser’s round was almost 12 shots less than the scoring average (75.91) and the former Canadian Tour member finished at 9-under 135. “I knew I could do it,” said Bowser, who was followed by his sister, Elayna, a mini-tour player. “You can’t go into the round thinking you’re going to shoot a 64. You have to let it happen. “To say you’re the top Assistant Professional in South Florida is a great feeling. I’m going to the national tournament to win, not just have a good time.” Tying for second place at 7-under 137 were Jason Robinson of the Country Club at Mirasol, Jeremy Wells of Cypress 34

Lake Golf Club and Michael Welch of Kensington. Robinson, the first-round leader, made two eagles and five bogeys during his up-and-down 70. Wells (69), a PGA Director of Instruction, made four birdies and a bogey. Welch had an eagle to highlight his 68. Alan Morin, a PGA Assistant Professional at The Club at Ibis, birdied the fifth playoff hole to beat Ryan Leahy of The Bear’s Club to earn the final spot in the National Car Rental Assistant PGA Professional Championship Nov. 11-14 at PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie. Morin birdied the final three holes to make the playoff. Leahy is first alternate. The National Car Rental SFPGA Assistant Professional Championship is conducted by the South Florida PGA.

The South Florida PGA Doral Junior Open at Trump National Doral Miami produced a first-time SFPGA Junior Tour winner, Filippo Serra, in the boy's overall division, and a second consecutive major champion in the overall girl's division, Vilda Westh Blanc. Serra of Ponte Vedra, who recently moved to Florida from Switzerland, fired a one-under 69 today on the Doral – Red Tiger course, finishing at three-under for the three-day tournament. Moving three spots up the leaderboard, avenging a first-round 74, Serra fired six birdies today to hold off Chris Calvani of Palm Beach Gardens and Ryan Lopez of Pembroke Pines who finished at even and one-over for the tournament, respectively. In the girl's division, Westh Blanc, who recently won the SFPGA Junior Tour Patty Berg Championship two weeks ago, took hold of the lead thanks to a first-round 72 and never let it go. Westh Blanc followed her even-par round with another 72 today to beat the field by eight strokes, Madison Moman of Palm Beach Gardens finishing at 12-over for the tournament in second place. Brooks continued his clutch play down the stretch by hitting his approach on the first playoff hole to four feet, making for an easy tap-in birdie to seal the victory. Isaacs and Brooks carded 14 birdies and 2 eagles throughout the two days of play. Finishing in a tie for third at 15-under were Matt Doyle, PGA Professional at Turtle Creek and Pete Williams and Will Coleman, PGA Professional at the Club at Admirals Cove and Brandon Smith The Pro-Scratch is supported by Bushnell Golf, The Lincoln Motor Company, PXG, On the Green CBD, Scales, Therabody, Precise Yardage Books and the Winner’s Award Group.

Through the Original Tee, Haskins has made it his mission to expose and nurture diverse participation in the game and business of golf. “When I heard what 10 ALL IN and the South Florida PGA Foundation was doing, I had to get involved,” said Haskins. “I appreciate what is being done here to grow the game and for Santonio to bring it back to his hometown with the South Florida PGA is unbelievable.” The South Florida PGA has recently partnered with Super Bowl MVP Santonio Holmes and his foundation 10 ALL IN to bring golf and STEAM to underserved communities. Starting with Belle Glade, where Holmes grew up, the SFPGA Foundation and 10 ALL IN wrapped up a week-long Golf and STEAM Summer Camp at Glades Central High School this week. The Foundations were joined by 30 Glades Central high school students and SFPGA Professionals who introduced golf to the students, as well as engineers from Pratt & Whitney who guided an engineering project. The success of the week is just the first step for the SFPGA Foundation and 10 ALL IN who look forward to many more programs in the future to touch the lives of future generations.

A Drive, Chip and Putt Season to Remember

After three months of fierce competition, the Drive, Chip and Putt qualifying season has officially wrapped. After kicking off in May at Leadbetter Academy at the Omni ChampionsGate, hundreds of kids have taken their swing and utilized the opportunity to see how they stack up against their fellow competitors. As summer slips away, the competition is intensifying and will soon reach new heights in the forthcoming months. However, the journey thus far has been one filled with competitive spirits, impressive achievements and notable acknowledgments. The nationwide program is free for children ages 7-15 and aims to grow the game of golf by spotlighting the three fundamental skills of the sport- drive, chip and putt. The competition enables participants to become more passionate about the sport, play alongside their peers and improve their individual skills. Each competitor has the ability to hit three shots per skill, giving them a total of nine shots. Points are gathered per shot, and the champion with the greatest total of points earned is victorious. There have been a total of 12 local qualifiers over the course of the summer. The qualifying season’s locations have ranged from Rogers Park Golf Course in Tampa to World Golf Village in St. Augustine. Come rain or shine, each round has provided its players the ability to advance to the Sub-Regional rounds at The Leadbetter Academy and at TPC Sawgrass. Not only has each qualifier been extremely competitive, for some there has been a bit of added pressure. The season has been quite the family affair, as sibling rivalry has been on full display.

Turning the Corner: the Deep South Turf Expo Emerges In 2021 The Pandemic year of 2020 was extremely challenging for everyone, and much to our dismay we had to cancel the 2020 DSTE Expo. The Board looked at various formats to host at least a portion of the Expo, but because of the general shut-down, we were unable to plan a viable event. It was very frustrating, but as we return to a semblance of normality, we are re-committed to making this the best Expo in our seven-year history! To further that aim we have an unsurpassed education program for 2021! Attendees will have outstanding breakouts and the general session will inspire all those in the turf industry who want to continue to learn and grow in their profession! Our education committee (Drs. Beth Guertal, Dave Han, Jay McCurdy and Bryan Unruh) achieved a broad-spectrum approach to topics. The general session speakers are highlighted below.

Brad Jakubowski with Penn State University has been involved with the Green Industry for over 30 years, working within the residential/commercial, golf course and sport field areas. He is an Instructor of Plant Sciences and PhD candidate at Penn State University. Brad currently teaches a variety of irrigation and turfgrass management courses. In Weather Apps and Weather Decisions, Let’s Make the Most of Both!, he discusses the best in weather apps and web-based information and how to use this information to make the best management, game-time and event management decisions possible! Bring your phones! Dr. Jim Brosnan is ready to talk weeds in “Why Do They Keep Talking About Resistance?”. Professor in the Plant Sciences Department at the University of Tennessee (UT) and Director of the UT Weed Diagnostics Center, his research focuses on controlling unique and problematic turfgrass weeds, particu38

larly those with resistance to herbicides. Dr. Brosnan has consulted at multiple venues on the PGA Tour (including several major championship host sites,) in addition to National Football League franchises. Dr. Chase Straw earned his

B.S. degree from the University of Kentucky in Turfgrass Science. He will speak on Technologies for Turfgrass Management: Current Trends and Future Applications. As an undergraduate, he gained experience managing sports fields at the collegiate (University of Kentucky) and professional (Boston RedSox and Cincinnati Bengals) levels. He went on to earn his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Turfgrass Science from the University of Georgia. He spent two years as a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the University of Minnesota before becoming Assistant Professor of Turfgrass Management and Physiology at Texas A&M University in February 2020. Chase’s research focuses on spatial and temporal variability within turfgrass systems to develop practical strategies for reducing management inputs and improving the overall user experience. This year we added a break-out on career management. For anyone wishing to advance in their profession (and who doesn’t!) don’t miss Armen Suny’s presentation, “Job Search 101.” Mr. Suny is a search and consulting executive with Kopplin Kuebler & Wallace. He provides executive searches for general managers, golf course superintendents, golf professionals, assistant general managers, and clubhouse managers. He graduated from the famed turfgrass

management program at Penn State. Suny has held the positions of golf course superintendent, general manager, vice president of agronomy, PGA tournament director, golf course designer and golf development project workout manager. While beefing up our program with these amazing keynote speakers, the Deep South Turf Expo is committed to providing entertainment and social networking that can be quite as valuable as formal education programs. The Deep South Four Ball Tournament will be reprised and held on Monday at The Preserve and on Tuesday at Fallen Oak. While teams are battling it out over the Four Ball tournament at Fallen Oak on Tuesday, the Preserve Golf Club will host our Scramble Tournament. Following the Scramble at The Preserve, whether you golf or not, everyone is invited to come out in the late afternoon to attend a Tail Gate Picnic that is being planned by our sponsors. This event was amazingly well received in 2019 -- despite the heat and we are talking about both high temperatures and some of the food options that “kicked it up a notch!” Lest we forget, in addition to the golf there will be the Skeet and Trap Tournament on Tuesday as well, and the Sports Field Tour. The tour will end as usual at Shuckers Stadium in time for everyone to take part in the Tail Gate at The Preserve. We are really excited about our program this year! We feel there is pent up demand that will make this one of the best attended Expo’s ever. Registration for exhibitors and attendees is open on-line at DeepSouthTurfExpo.org. Make plans now to attend. Getting together with friends and colleagues in Biloxi in the Fall is always a special time for our industry, and made even more so by our absence last year! Golf Central • Volume 22, Issue 5

BallenIsles Country Club in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. recently welcomed Mike Stevens as the club’s new Director of Agronomy. In his new position, Stevens will oversee maintenance of BallenIsles’ three championship golf courses, including the East, North and South Courses, its expansive golf practice facilities and the club’s agronomy team. Stevens was born and raised in Gainesville, Fla. and has spent the past 21 years living in the St. Augustine area. He most recently served as the Southeast Director of Agronomic Programs for Indigo Golf Partners, a division of Troon, overseeing golf course maintenance, capital planning, 42

see, Louisiana and Texas. From 2007 to 2010, Stevens served as superintendent of St. John’s Golf & Country Club in St. Augustine, where he was involved in the construction of, and daily agronomics of the private club. “The team is very excited to attract a talent like Michael,” said BallenIsles Country Club General Manager and Chief Operating Officer Ryan Walls. “We certainly look forward to continuing an upward trajectory of agronomic excellence. Michael’s experience will also be invaluable as we continue to execute on our strategic vision for our future sport offerings here at the Club.” Stevens is a past president of the North Florida Golf Course Superintendents Association and is a Class A Member of the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America. He is married to his childhood sweetheart, Amanda, and together they have two children, Benjamin and Madison. “After serving in a regional capacity and working with so many great clubs, I really look forward to settling down and honing my skills on one property.

The quality, expectation and lofty goals BallenIsles has is so evident. I very much welcome the opportunity for our team to put the agronomic conditioning atop the great clubs in Florida,” said Stevens. BallenIsles Country Club’s East and North Courses were designed by two of the most highly-acclaimed golf course architects of the era: Dick Wilson and Joe Lee. In 2019/2020, famed golf course architect Rees Jones redesigned the South Course. Earlier this year, BallenIsles announced a strategic design partnership with Nicklaus Design to take the Club through a multi-year renovation of the East Course and golf practice facilities. The East Course renovation is expected to include a modernization of the irrigation system, a complete re-grassing of the course, improvement of tee locations and the return of original course design features from when the course hosted major championships. The Nicklaus Design team will add length and strategy that will test both members and tournament players alike. Returning To My Roots Recently returning to Florida

after 27 years in Asia I am proud to announce that the Tampa Bay Area is really where I gained the experience needed to carry out my successful career in the golf course maintenance business in Asia. Having worked at Innisbrook Resort in its hay day in the mid-eighties and belonging to the West Coast Chapter of the Golf Course Superintendents association, was a real blessing, as I learned so much from my “band of brothers” here in this business. I traveled to Thailand for a Golf Course Superintendents position in 1992 after a successful stint for 3 years at The Links of Spruce Creek near Ocala where I worked with the Golf Professional/Architect Terry Doss, who is still my best friend today. I am so happy to be back, while in the twilight of my career as a Certified Golf Course Superintendent, and am now travelling the great state of Florida with a company called Noble Turf, (www. nobleturf.com) visiting golf course Superintendents here on the West Coast down to Naples and across to Palm Beach, assisting them with products and technology to help maintain their courses at high standards. We have the greatest collection of golf courses in this State than anywhere else in the world! Having traveled extensively in this business, “I have yet to find a golf course maintenance challenge that I could not meet” and given my tenure in the golf industry, it’s easy to understand why… as no one ever called me in when their golf course was perfect. Having dealt with every imaginable challenge in my 45 plus year career I can state that “There are many revealing indicators that help us as qualified Superintendents identify issues with the health of differing turf types, drainage issues on golf courses, bunker performance, water quality challenges and ‘use’ strategies, just to touch on a few key areas of golf course maintenance… that are vital to the viability of a playable golf course”. After time these indicators now come second nature to me and I can identify, recommend and treat to maintain highly playable stan44

dards and an effective golf course maintenance program, given proper resources. “However, what we still face in our industry are many course owner/managers that still take a passive or simple ‘bottom-line’ approach to these important elements which are foundational to a good playing course”. And a good playing course gains natural reputation, more play, and ultimately a real increase in ‘bottom-line’, this is what they fail to understand. But it doesn’t stop with just golf course maintenance; in my opinion, the overall experience to the golfer is what is critical and

By Tony Taylor Certified Golf Course Superintendent missing in many courses I have seen worldwide”. There is still a lot of work and knowledge to share with owners, managers and club committees to remove any fixed ideas or subjectivity on how they perceive an operations should be run. Many who know Tony would agree he has truly mastered the art of golf course maintenance and tournament preparation, stemming from effective golf course maintenance programs he has developed with another company he founded called Tee2Green Benchmarking, (www.tee2greenbenchmarking.com) There is also something to be said for being in the right place at the right time and having a solid work ethic and product. Tony’s company, Quality Golf founded in 1994 (which is winding down due to the C-19 virus challenges in Thailand) which during the Asian golf boom had been directly involved with more than 20 major televised events and over 50 total events in 7 countries throughout SE Asia for the Asian Tour, Thai PGA Tour, Professional Golf Tour of India, the Japan Tour and the European Tour. The earliest success started with the 1997 Asian Honda Classic where Champion Tiger Woods first entered the international golf scene and then fast forwarding to 2018, as Senior Consulting Superintendent for the Japan Open at Yokohama Country Club. I made many lifelong friends in golf around Asia and now it is fabulous to return to meet many of my old lifelong friends in the golf business here in Florida, many from my alma mater Florida Gateway College, (formerly Lake City Community College) who trained many luminary Superintendents who ended up managing the finest courses in the state. All of this is certainly a dream come true for me to be back in our great country and state and full circle still in the golf business. In this last leg of my career, I am keen on helping recruit new talent into the business by being on the advisory board of Florida Gateway College’s turf program and finally helping the Director of Facilities and Operations, Andy Neiswender with the historic course at Belleair Country Club go through a restoration of their Donald Ross West Course, with Fry/Straka Global Golf Design starting in March 2022. I have my plate full and am glad to be still heavily engaged in all areas of golf course maintenance! This business is just in my blood and roots! Golf Central • Volume 22, Issue 5

Ready to Say Aloha to Green Fairways and Island Time? As our travel opportunities grow this fall and summer, don’t forget to include trips to environmentally sustainable golf courses on your list. Golf Courses filter storm water runoff, offer outdoor recreation and provide green spaces and wildlife habitat in urban and rural areas. Audubon International is proud to environmentally certify over 800 golf courses around the world… 3 of which are located in Hawaii and are a mix of either private or public access. Say Aloha to sustainable success!

Kohanaiki – Private Access To get us started, we’re taking a look at Audubon International Signature Sanctuary Certified Golf Course, Kohanaiki. An 18-hole Rees Jones designed private golf club located on the Big Island that is doing big things for a local endangered species. Kohanaiki has been an Audubon International member since 2004 when they began their certification efforts to ensure sustainable design, construction and management of the golf course. Since opening in 2013, the maintenance crew at Kohanaiki continues to look after the environment on and around the golf course. This includes not only the 18-hole course, but also includes over 200 anchialine pools (landlocked, tidal fed pools). These pools provide homes and nesting areas to many organisms, one of which happens to be the endangered bird, the Hawaiian black-necked stilt, also known as the Ae‘o. According to the United States Fish and Wildlife Service, the Ae‘o population was down to roughly 1,000 individuals in the 1940’s. The species

Anchialine Pools at Kohanaiki

was then listed as endangered in 1970 and the population today is estimated to be between 1200 – 1500 individuals. Kohanaiki Golf Course is contributing to this population growth by providing adequate habitat, and proudly confirmed 7 Hawaiian Stilt fledglings in 2020. “Kohanaiki is proud to be certified

as a Silver Signature Program golf course with Audubon International since 2014. Audubon International has been an instrumental partner in supporting our vision to “Love The Land, The Ocean, and The People of Kohanaiki”. Our team strongly believes that our mission is to protect the natural resources of our land before taking on the added responsibility of maintaining our world class golf course. Our property sits adjacent to a mile and a half of Kona Coastline and is thoughtfully designed around a collection of over 200 anchialine ponds that provide habitat for native plants, marine life, and water birds. It’s a unique pleasure for our team to be able work on the golf course, visually observe the habitat around them thriving, and then be able to Golf Central • Volume 22, Issue 5

Kapalua Plantation & Bay Course – Public Access Perhaps you watched the PGA Sentry Tournament in January at the world renowned Kapalua Plantation Course… or over the years have seen one of over 20 tournaments that have been hosted at Kapalua’s Bay Course, including the LPGA Kapalua Classic in 2008…Did you know you can play these courses too? Both Kapalua’s Plantation Course, designed by Coore and Crenshaw, and the Bay Course, designed by Arnold Palmer and Francis Duane are certified members in our Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Certification for Golf. Through this certification, both of the courses continuously improve sustainability across existing golf course infrastructure throughout numerous focal areas. If you’re lucky enough to get to Hawaii and play at Kapalua be sure to notice the environmental efforts in place which include

PGA Tour Donations Help Support Three Key GCSAA Programs Major gift pledges will assist funding for BMPs, First Green and Allan MacCurrach Jr. Award

The PGA TOUR has announced two major donations to the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA) through the GCSAA Foundation to help fund GCSAA’s Facility Best Management Practices Initiative, First Green STEM-education program, and the Allan MacCurrach Jr. Award. The PGA TOUR will contribute $250,000 over five years to help implement BMPs on the golf facility level and to support the First Green. From 2016-2021, the PGA TOUR provided similar funding to GCSAA to provide grants to GCSAA Chapters to help establish BMP guidelines, which feature agronomic practices that support environmental stewardship, in all 50 states. In January, GCSAA announced that goal had been reached. 48

“The PGA TOUR’s generosity was key in our reaching our ambitious goal of BMPs in all 50 states,” GCSAA CEO Rhett Evans said. “We thank them not only for their financial support as we move on to the next BMP step, but also for their backing of programs that help grow the game of golf and the superintendent profession like First Green and the MacCurrach Award.” Now that the state BMPs have been established, the initiative moves on to the next phase with creation of facility BMP manuals. Using the GCSAA Planning Guide, individual golf facilities can use their state guides to create a BMP manual for their course. Facility BMP manuals not only direct and document agronomic and environmental practices, but they provide an easy, detailed reference for golfers, lawmakers and community members Golf Central • Volume 22, Issue 5

to better understand the operations behind the maintenance of one of their local greenspaces. First Green provides hands-on STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) education at golf courses. First Green is the only STEM education and environmental outreach program that uses golf courses as learning labs. Each First Green field trip averages 75 students who learn about golf and the environment. For most students, these “outdoor classrooms” represent their first exposure to a golf course. In addition to the support of BMPs and First Green, the PGA TOUR has also pledged $50,000 over the next 10 years for the Allan MacCurrach Jr. Award, which is a scholarship with the

A Turf Pirate’s Journal Five Smooth Stones

David verses Goliath is a well told story and theme amongst Turf Pirates especially when faced with an underdog situation or incredibly difficult circumstances (Turf Pirates often face challenges BTW with budgets, weather, events, equipment, staff or members just to name a few). However, while many folks are familiar with the basic story of David the Shepard boy with his sling and stone standing in faith against the giant Goliath with armor and steel weapons and how David ultimately won the day. It is told a bit differently around the campfires of the Ancient and Honorable Tribe of Turf Pirates. We focus a bit more on the fact that when David went down to the creek side before the moment of truth he gathered FIVE SMOOTH STONES. You see Goliath had four brothers. David prepared to face them all and in that light Turf Pirates understand that 50

you must see the whole of the challenge if it is to be overcome. The number and type of stones were all important. You see smooth stones fly faster and more accurate which is important when facing giants. David had a lot of experience protecting his father’s sheep from wild animals with the very same sling and Shepard’s pouch (you must have a place to store the stones) in comparison, how many stones and how large a pouch do you need when presenting next year’s budget proposal? See the comparison now. You see battles small and large are fought in mind, spirit and body and you must have clarity, you must be trained and tried. You must be willing to act with skill and persistence. You must ultimately pay the whole price for success, nothing is free. Turf Pirates embrace these truths with the appropriate energy and effort. We do not stand down from challenges but we

By Anthony Williams MG, CGCS, CGM

strive to be prepared in all situations to grow our skills and resources before the moment of need. I have been a part of five televised golf tournaments in my career, and I figuratively gathered my five stones in advance of each one. My archery friends know that it is the worst feeling ever to run out of arrows (or stones) before you run out of targets (this is especially true when it comes to bears, live or Archery Shooters Association ASA 3D targets). Shout out to John and Barry Clark with Pro Green Turf. It is necessary when cultivating turf at the highest level under extreme circumstances to gather the resources and wisdom to wield as needed to create a legacy of success. You may ask why Turf Pirates place such demands on themselves and by asking the question it requires an answer. The legends of turf choose the hard road. The turf industry is not easy and many times unfair but that is the allure and reward. Many are called but few are chosen, David answered a higher call with skills he had developed with his hands, mind and spirit, he was ready and worthy. He answered the call. When pressed turf pirates do you have the combined skills and collected stones to meet the challenge? When you ask a turf pirate if he is ready for the day, member guest, PGA event, certification test or corn hole tournament with the staff and they hold up five fingers. It means that they are ready and they are connecting generations of readiness and faith. They have gathered their five smooth stones, have you? Golf Central • Volume 22, Issue 5

freddy's fairway thoughts

Which major sport has the least problems? You know the answer: golf. So let’s review the sports and make our case… Baseball? No. TV ratings are sinking. Players are unhappy and might strike. Owners are getting stonewalled by their cities when they ask for more, more, more. The big city teams are getting better because they can poach players, the small markets are getting worse because they are being poached. Every iffy situation. The leadership reacts poorly in iffy situations. The fan is being left behind, particularly the kids. Football? No. The game is getting boring and ratings are starting to slip. They’ve sold their souls to the social movement. Ticket prices are out of the reach of most of us, the players think they’re getting screwed. The leadership’s arrogance is wearing thin. Basketball? No. Like football, they’re being held hostage to social movements. TV ratings stink. Hardly any players are identifiable. The leadership is subservient to a small group of players. Hockey? No. It’s still a cold weather sport and it takes a very good warm weather team to draw fans. Its TV presence still isn’t growing. Its leadership seems to accept things as they are. College football? No. It’s big, very big, but it is letting greed put it into disarray. Teams are moving around, players doing the same. Your quarterback last year might be playing for your rival this year. Leadership? None, and there’s an under-the-table battle ready to pop as coaches have the power and school administrators want it back. NASCAR? No. It’s still stuck in the 1980s with a rabid fan base that’s getting smaller. Everyone is an independent contractor so leadership has a lot less power than you think. Everyone involved seems to think that the past is the present and the future will be the same. Soccer? No sport is lower on the acceptance scale than U.S. futbol. The men’s team can’t beat the Third World nations in our area, and the perception of the women’s goes no further its foulmouthed anthem-kneeling leader. A lot of public money has been poured into these teams and all we have gotten back is a Bronze medal and a lot of big talk. Golf? It took us a lot of words to get here and the answer to any question is Yes. It is the most stable of any sport from top to bottom. The only outlier is the Premier League, but that seems to be mostly an effort by agents to show their clients that they’re doing something. 52

By Fred Seely TV ratings are lower but they’re creeping back up in the post-Tiger era. The PGA Tour’s menu and LPGA have full schedules and the public is getting used to not having Tiger, who has been replaced by very attractive men and women who understand the need for being attractive. The PGA Tour is slowly (and surely) is bringing over other organizations under its big umbrella. Monopoly isn’t a great thing but it might work here, particularly if they can reenergize the European market. A good case can be made that Jay Monahan is the best commissioner in sports. Deane Beman was, and Tim Finchem came close. Monahan is an organizer and a visionary who has that rare ability to get people together and buy into a course of action. He has kept the sport out of the social activism that is fracturing others, yet he can defend his Tour against any of the so-called “activists” who make a living by threatening to use the word “racist” with no hesitation. Fans are happy, sponsors are happy, players are getting richer and TV wants more.

One of golf’s most colorful writers passed away last month and leaves behind a wide range of feelings. To some, Greg Larson was an aggressive writer who would take on any subject. To others, a thankful bon voyage. Larson was the golf writer for the Jacksonville paper for maybe 20 years. New newsroom management didn’t like him, so he’s been a radio fixture for the last 20 years or so. His columnist days are remembered by most everyone. Good and bad. He wrote about Tom Weiskopf’s marital discord; Weiskopf called the sports desk and threatened to kill him. When J.C. Snead told Larson to quit bothering him while he hit balls, Larson called him a dumb hick and a PGA Tour official stopped Snead from hitting him with a 3-iron. Andy North not only refused to talk to him, he wouldn’t be in the same room. While other golf writers would go around and ask pros to tell the best shot they ever hit, Larson asked the worst shot. But Larson was revered by many in his profession. He had a job to do and he did it well; if the subject resisted, then Larson resisted back. He was prolific and had great ideas. He once went to New York City and, in one day with the help of public relations people, slid into home plate at Yankee Stadium, shot free throws at Madison Square Garden, and hit serves at the National Tennis Center. On the longest day of the year — June 20 — he and a local assistant pro teed off at dawn and, by the time it got too dark, had played seven different courses. He played baseball into his 50s, was a single-digit on the golf course, and even learned to play what might be the most difficult sport: jai alai. He’ll be missed. At least, by most people.
