Thank You For Being A Friend The calendar is showing November which means Thanksgiving and the upcoming Holiday season is right around the corner. Prior to giving thanks around the dinner table, we should all be thankful this Veterans Day for the men and women that served their country especially those that made the ultimate sacrifice. In the 14+ years that Florida Golf Central has been publishing, I’ve established affiliations with countless golf organizations throughout the state of Florida. The relationships that have been forged with the people in groups like: SFPGA, NFPGA, CMAA, FLRA, EWGA, NFLPA, MLBPAA, ING, SAGA, First Tee, AGO, GCSAA, PGA, LPGA, IJGT, and AJGA has been part of the reason why the magazine has been so successful. Relationships go a long way and that is why Florida Golf Central magazine can look forward to another 14 years. Our latest affiliation is with Keith Chartrand, a local golf radio show host in North Central Florida. Every Saturday morning Teeing Off with Keith Chartrand can be heard on the NBC Sports Radio affiliate. The show’s core audience includes The Villages, Summerfield, Ocala and Gainesville.

3M and ANNIKA Foundation Announce Collegiate, Junior Golf Partnership ORLANDO, Fla. – The ANNIKA Foundation – golf Hall-of-Famer Annika Sorenstam’s charitable organization – announces 3M will sponsor its ANNIKA Award, ANNIKA Intercollegiate and global series of ANNIKA Invitational junior tournaments. Since 2007 the ANNIKA Foundation has had two parallel missions: 1) teaching children the importance of living a healthy, active lifestyle through fitness and nutrition, and 2) offering aspiring junior golfers opportunities to pursue their dreams. The new partnership with 3M reflects both organizations’ dedication to empowering the next generation, especially women and girls. “3M and Annika are a natural fit as we both
represent excellence, integrity, and competitiveness,” said 3M Chairman, President and CEO Inge Thulin. “I am personally 100 percent committed to this partnership with the ANNIKA Foundation as Annika is an ideal global citizen with whom to align our global company.”
“We’re honored to welcome 3M as a sponsor of the ANNIKA Intercollegiate, ANNIKA Award and our series of Invitational tournaments,” said Annika, an eight-time Rolex Player of the Year Award winner and the first and only woman to shoot 59 in an LPGA event. “We share similar passions for giving back and through our partnership, 3M will be crucial to bringing even greater success to these Foundation initiatives.” 3M will be the Presenting Sponsor of the ANNIKA Award. Created earlier this year, it will be given to the most outstanding NCAA Division I female golfer beginning in 2014. The winner will also receive an exemption into the Kraft Nabisco Championship, one of the LPGA Tour’s major championships.

42nd Annual Florida Restaurant & Lodging Show Thousands of restaurant and foodservice industry professionals enjoyed three days of tasting new products, meeting with new vendors and attending educational programs offering new concepts at the 42nd annual Florida Restaurant & Lodging Show which was held at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando. The event was sponsored by the Florida Restaurant & Lodging Association, a partner of the National Restaurant Association. “We welcome the new owners of the event, Urban Expositions, and we thank our exhibitors, our attendees, our speakers, and the Florida Restaurant & Lodging Association. The event is more than a tradeshow; it is a complete learning experience that improves our attendees business throughout the year,» said Ron Mathews, Industry Vice President for the Foodservice Events. «The energy and excitement on the show floor was fantastic, fueled by our sponsors especially Miller Coors, the official Beer of the Show featuring Blue Moon and Leinekugel’s as well as all of the special events and new product announcements.” “We were excited to announce the purchase of this event just a few weeks ago and be on-site, feel the energy, meet with exhibitors and attendees and members of the association and 10
hear the enthusiasm about the future growth of both the industry and this event,»” said Doug Miller, President of Urban Expositions. “We thank the staff and look forward to building on
the momentum they created at this year’s Show and taking that energy to all the 2014 Restaurant and Foodservice events.” Exhibitors had this to say about the recent Florida Restaurant & Lodging Show. Dave Reed - VP Operations - Miller Alehouse Restaurants, “I’ve been with the FRLA for 15 years...and this show is a don’t miss event.” Stephen Jason - Chairman - American Culinary Federation, “Throughout the years I’ve seen a lot of new things at this show that we use at Universal Studios, Orlando. that are coming (to the show) amaze me.” Joel Cohen, RestaurantMarketing. com, “The Florida Restaurant & Lodging Show is one of the premier shows around the country with great operators, vendors and speaker. There’s an opportunity to try things, see things and taste things.” Darren Denington - Service with Style Hospitality Group, “I’ve been coming to the show for 15 years and every single year you always get something new out of it: great new trends, people to see, great networking and with a great vibe around the show.” Double D Duncan - Double “D” Knitting & Glove, “We signed up last year and the show was so successful that we signed up for this year and our third year. We’ve had a lot of interest from Universal Studios and Disney - they were the two that we really wanted to meet.”
Golf Tournament Even with the cloudy start, FRLA hosted the 13th annual NRA/FRLA Bob Leonard Golf Classic on Wednesday, September 25th at ChampionsGate. The sun came out as the golfers took off and we ended up with a great day of golf in Florida. The fundraiser was a huge success and we raised more than $100,000 for the NRA & FRLA Political Action Funds. Florida Golf Central • Volume 14, Issue 5

The First Tee of Greater Ocala hasn’t been around that long; less than two years. The impact the organization has made throughout Marion County in its short existence though has been more then exemplary.
TFTOGO Executive Director Chris Wilson Al Dunlap Judy Dunlap Sean Thornton
To keep The First Tee of Greater Ocala growing the organization, under the leadership of executive director Chris Wilson, had their third annual golf tournament fundraiser. Golden Ocala Golf and Equestrian Club, with eight of its championship holes recreated from Augusta, Royal Troon, Baltusrol, Muirfield and St. Andrews, hosted over 100 golfers. Golden Ocala’s Director of Golf Mike Cooney assisted Wilson in making the tournament, lunch and auction a success. Over 500 children in the Ocala-Marion County area already have completed the 12-week First Tee Program that develops life skills through golf. Wilson isn’t stopping there. By encouraging Marion County elementary schools to participate in the First Tee’s National School Program, 4,000 additional Marion County children have

picked up both golf clubs and life skills. The program currently is in 10 Marion County school. Wilson’s goal, in five years, is to have it in all 29. The fundraiser will help make it happen. Grilled-to-perfection hamburgers, delicious cookies along with sweet tea and lemonade hit the spot after the tournaments. Participants got to bid on terrific items including a Ted Potter Jr. signed Masters Par-3 tournament flag. Potter Jr., an Ocala native, along with Jody and Cody Phillips and Jacob Cox were the tournament winners. 18

John Brown- A Thriving Golf Entrepreneur
John Brown
To make it in college football and in the National Football League, a football player needs to be great at one thing to make the team. If someone has the God-given ability to run without being caught, that player can be a running back. Receivers have the ability to catch, quarterbacks to throw, defensive players to tackle and kickers to kick. To make it on the PGA Tour and other tours, golfers can’t be great at just one facet of the game; they have to be great at all of them. A golfer won’t make it professionally with exceptional accuracy off the tee if he/she has a mediocre short game or sub-par iron play.
20
It is the same way in business. An entrepreneur with capital can’t be successful if he/she lacks experience, a strategic business plan, drive and a leadership team. John Brown is a thriving golf entrepreneur because Brown Golf Management (BGM) has a business plan and a very good leadership team. Brown himself has the drive and having worked for major golf management companies like Troon Golf has given him the proper experience. Way before being head of BGM and even before getting his first golf job, John was that kid who could throw a football. He played quarterback in high school and eventually followed his star wide receiver, former Kansas City Royal outfielder Willie Wilson, from their high school in New Jersey to the football fields of University of Louisiana-
Lafayette. Proving just how athletically talented he was, Brown went to ULL also play golf. He was that kid with a dream of one day making it on the PGA Tour. He knew a career playing pro football was out of the question. He went through the meat grinder of mini tours, making the cut one week to missing it the next. Brown’s I-want-to-be-a-pro-golferwhen-I-grow-up declaration occurred in large part because of his grandfather, Gene Jacobs. Brown said Jacobs was “a good golfer” and was very involved in his home course, Hornell County Club, in the western New York. “He taught me how to play,” Brown said. “We had a great relationship because of the game of golf. We must have played about 10,000 rounds of golf together.” Brown didn’t finish his schooling in

Heritage Hole #6
CCWP East Course Hole 12 Louisiana. He transferred to the College of Trenton, back in New Jersey. He returned to the Garden State and the day he graduated college he turned pro. “I thought I could play at a high level but I never achieved the success I thought I could,” said Brown. Fortunately Brown had a back-up plan. His commitment in the classroom while also calling plays in the huddle and making 4-foot putts earned Brown a business degree. When he hung up his clubs for good, Brown spent one golf season at a local club in central New Jersey. The pro at another local course recruited him during the offseason and during his second spring since graduating Brown was working at Hopewell Valley Country Club in Hopewell, New Jersey as an assistant pro. The club’s director of golf, Joe Conboy, took Brown under his wing. “He was a guy I really considered my mentor from a golf management prospective,” said Brown. “He was the guy that actually sat me down and actually showed me how to read a financial statement….how to take inventory and do all Florida Golf Central • Volume 14, Issue 5

those business related tasks. He sparked my interest in the business side (of golf).” From that day forward Brown was an entrepreneur in thought but because he was just out of college he “didn’t have two nickels to rub together.” Years later Brown got a job at one of the hardest golf companies to get into: Troon Golf. Today it is still considered one of the most dynamic companies in the industry. Knowing one of Troon’s vice presidents got Brown’s foot in the door. Troon had a need that fit Brown’s skill set well – he turned financially strapped courses around. “Being (Troon’s) turnaround specialist, I went into a number of facilities that were very much financially challenged or slight financially challenged. I implemented some management practices that I developed over the years that had big success from a turnaround perspective.” According to Brown, the two biggest aspects of the golf industry that get mismanaged are employee payroll and vendor relationships. Two of Troon’s
courses thrived under those adjustments and earned Brown Troon’s prestigious National Turnaround Award twice. One was Haig Point on Daufuskie Island, a private island in South Carolina. Most people wouldn’t want to leave such a great company but Brown’s entrepreneurial spirit, lit years earlier by Conboy, was still burning. He dabbled in management of non-Troon courses on the side from 2008 to 2010. In the second half of 2010 the Brown Golf Management pieces started to come together. The course where his vacation home is in Bluffton, S.C. went up for sale literally days after BGM became an official business on Jan. 1, 2011. Two months later it was the first BGM property. In just two and a half years, BGM owns and operates eight courses in the southeast, has a management contract with five other courses (four in Pennsylvania) and is handling the consulting work for 13 additional courses. “We have grown extremely quickly,” said Brown. “We have put ourselves in a good position to be successful.” 21

Golf Club Fitting: “The Driver May Be The Race Car, But The Shaft Is The Engine”
improving performance
Photos by Gale Donnelly
As soon as my friend and shaft wizard, Steven Hahn, spoke those illuminating words to me, I was determined to find the right shaft and driver for my swing. Since this is a tale of unrequited love, I appropriately visited the Fujikura Golf shaft company headquarters in Vista, CA on Valentine’s Day. As in all cases of love, pain often lurks in the wings, emerging after I spent two hours pounding balls into a screen under the intense scrutiny of fitting specialist Marshall Thompson. Assisted by an array of monitors, cameras, lights and other devices, he analyzed every part of my swing, the club, shaft and ball I was using and whether my spikes were tied too tightly. We began with a little talk about the kind of game I have, what I am looking for in a driver, if I have any serious health issues that would affect my swing, any serious psychological flaws that could appear during torture. Then, I warmed up with a few swings of a 6-iron, feeling a mixture of confidence and terror about what was to come. My precious golf swing, cultivated over decades with all its glorious flaws, was about to be scrutinized under the harsh light of reality. Then the moment of truth arrives - Marshall hands me my own driver, a Ping K15 with a standard factory shaft, regular flex and 9.5˚ loft, referred to as the “gamer”, and asks me to hit some balls as a baseline for comparison with other equipment. He asked what balls I prefer, since they have drawers full of all the major brands and models. Fujikura is not affiliated with any of the original equipment makers (OEMs), like Ping, Callaway, TaylorMade, etc., but has arrangements with them to have a broad sampling of all their driver heads and other hybrids and irons. All club heads can be quickly attached to any Fujikura shaft with a simple bayonet system, so that they can put a Fujikura shaft on any major club on the market. The fitting studio, extremely impressive with all its highly technical equipment and tools, has launch monitors front and rear and a bank of digital cameras that record every aspect of the swing. From an artificial grass mat “fittees” hit balls into a large screen where a wide fairway is projected, a center stripe painted down the middle like I-95. So far, nothing unusual. Then the fireworks start. With my “gamer”, I bang out half a dozen shots, each one creating a brightly colored tracer showing its arc, deviation from the center line, where it lands, bouncing to a virtual stop. I’m getting into this. It’s actually more relaxing and certainly more interesting than teeing off on number one in my Friday league. You can take all the mulligans you want. After spraying a few and a couple that I felt were fairly good, Marshall flips the screen from “fairway” to reveal all the data that he has acquired from my efforts. An amazing array of numbers stared back at me: club head speed, ball speed, launch angle, azimuth (what the hell is that?), side spin, back spin, total spin, descent 22

angle, carry, total distance, offline and peak height. At the moment, I can’t even begin to digest what it all means, except total distance and “offline” - how far away the ball finished from the center stripe. Marshall explained I’ve got too high a launch angle, too much side spin and back spin and total spin and because of all that spin, the ball doesn’t roll out very far after landing, especially when I slice it like a loaf of bread. Now we start trying different combinations of driver heads and Fujikura shafts. Far from being a subjective comparison, the array of data reveals what I’m doing and what’s best for me, assuming I’m putting good swings on the ball. When I hit a clunker, Marshall dumps the data, just like posting an unusually high score for your handicap. We run through the various shafts Fujikura makes, shifting them from heads by Titleist,
Another hour. My hands hurt. My arms are getting weak. My legs are quivering like wet spaghetti. There are multi-colored tracers all over the screen tracked to every shaft/driver combination we have tried. It looks like neon Silly String at a New Year’s Eve party. But have we reached Nirvana? Callaway, TaylorMade and Ping, all with different loft angles and their own individual sounds and feel. My shot pattern starts to tighten after about an hour of smacking balls as Marshall begins to home in on what might be best for my particular method of thrashing. Despite my obviously imperfect stroke, Marshall is not trying to change my swing - he is searching for a driver shaft combination that is best for my swing, whatever it is. That’s the magic of club fitting. A qualified technician’s ultimate goal is to find the perfect club to help YOU get the most out of YOUR swing. Marshall, now my lord and master, is ready to make his proclamation. My stats with a Ping G25 8.5˚ driver head, driven by the Fujikura “Blur” shaft, 45.25” stiff flex, are far superior to any other combination I used. Two MPH more clubhead speed, three more MPH ball speed, better launch angle, far less spin, five yards less side dispersion for straighter shots, longer carry and longer rollout for 16 more yards total distance! Marshall explained that his goal was to find the driver for me where I can tee it up and confidently rip it, enabling me to fully go after the ball. I am exhausted, but completely sold on the process. Now I can’t wait to take it out on the course. To be continued next issue. Stay tuned... Florida Golf Central • Volume 14, Issue 5

Tour View Golf
TM
Could this be the training device that golfers have dreamed of? Something that helps you instantly hit the ball more solid! Tour View head and body stabilizer could revolutionize the game of golf. Tour View is a device that automatically makes you a better swinger. According to the legendary Jack Nicklaus, “The number one fundamental in golf is to keep your head steady. “ When the head moves so does the arc. This makes it tough to build a repeatable swing. Mike Jones the inventor of Tour View has been playing golf since he was 5 years old thanks to his parents Betty and Gene Jones. “I have a lot of knowledge about the golf swing. I have been blessed to learn about golf from some very knowledgeable players and teachers. I love to study golf and feel extremely fortunate to be able to help people enjoy the game to the fullest. “ Let’s get down to business and talk about how Tour View can help every golfer. Let’s start with the set up. See illustration 1. Some people don’t realize how important this is. This position is very close to the impact position.
24
So this is your foundation, let’s get it right. Don’t let your chin be too close to your chest, this restricts your shoulder turn. After mounting Tour View on the brim of your hat pull the brim down slightly so the chin will be raised up about 3 to 4 inches off of your chest. Adjust Tour View by closing your right eye then the left eye ensuring the ball is in the center of each eye hole. When Tour View is set properly you see only one circle around the ball. See illustra-
tion 2. Now you are ready to practice or train. Try and keep the ball centered in the middle of the circle during the swing. This may take Illustration 2 a few swings depending on how much you move. Tour View’s instant feedback eliminates the need for a video camera or someone holding a club on top of your head to see if you move. As you can tell by now Tour View helps the player accomplish the #1 fundamental in golf. Keep your head and body steady. Tour View not only lets you train, practice and play, but also lets the player follow the ball in flight after being struck. Mike Jones is committed to keep the price low so that every golfer is able to afford Tour View. Try Tour View for 30 days. Train, practice, and play. If you are not 100% satisfied return it for a full refund. It won’t be long before Tour View is rated the #1 training aid in golf.

Valdes Victorious at Black Diamond Ito earns first Boys 15-19 Division title
The International Junior Golf Tour (IJGT) conducted the Florida Junior at Black Diamond Ranch. Held on the Quarry Course, which hosted 2012 U.S. Open Sectional Qualifying, the Florida Junior featured elite junior golfers ages 9-19 representing 19 countries and 10 states competing for national recognition and IJGT Merit Points. Ranked by GolfDigest as the 143rd best golf course in the United States, the Quarry Course is a Tom Fazio design that provided a great backdrop for the competition and featured a stretch of five consecutive holes

(Nos. 13-17) weaving up and down the quarry. Numerous challenges awaited the tournament field, but many were able to navigate the challenging course to post great rounds. Ana Paula Valdes of Morelia, Mexico, put on the best performance of the tournament after firing a 4-underpar 140 tournament total to win the Girls Division by 12 strokes. Playing in her first IJGT Event in the 2013-2014 season, Valdes drove the golf ball well, hit precise approach shots, and most importantly, rolled the putter well propelling her to the first-place finish. In the first round, Valdes got off to a blazing start making two birdies in her first two holes. From there she would make two more birdies and three bogeys en route to a 1-under-par 71. Going into the final round Valdes carried a six-stroke lead. Valdes did not let up on the accelerator in the final round. Again, she started her day off with two consecutive birdies to put the pressure squarely on her fellow competitors. Valdes was not done on the front nine though. She would birdie Shogo Ito hole No. 7 and
then eagle the ninth hole on the Quarry Course at Black Diamond Ranch to go out in 5-under-par 31. On the more difficult back nine, Valdes would drop two shots to finish off her stellar performance with a 3-under-par 69. This was the lowest score of the tournament regardless of division and also earned Valdes the Clazic Belts Low Final Round Award. “I wasn’t focused on my competitors. I was just trying to do better than yesterday. I was just focusing on my golf game,” said Valdes. Rei Nakatani of Tokyo, Japan, finished in second place in the Girls Division with a tournament total of 152, while Nikita Arjun of Bangalore, India, took third place with a tournament total of 153. In the Boys 15-19 Division, Shogo Ito of Tokyo, Japan, was victorious for the first time in the 2013-2014 IJGT season. He used a final-round score of even-par 72 to separate himself from the rest of field at Black Diamond Ranch. The score also earned him the Clazic Belts Low Final Round Award. In the first round, Ito grinded out an impressive score of 4-over-par 76 to earn a share of the lead with Ben Cohn of Guayaquil, Ecuador. Ito’s round was similar to a rollercoaster as he made as many pars as he did birdies (five). His most pivotal birdies came in the quarry on holes Nos. 15-16 which played extremely tough due to the precision required on the respective tee shots. The final round was wide open with five other competitors within three strokes of the co-leaders. Ito Florida Golf Central • Volume 14, Issue 5
Karl Vilips got off to the start he needed after making a birdie on the first hole. “At first I was nervous, but I made a birdie on the first hole which helped,” commented Ito. A bogey on the second hole put Ito back at even-par for the day, but after three consecutive birdies on holes Nos. 7-9, Ito made the turn in 3-under-par 33. From there it was his to lose. A wayward tee shot on No. 15 forced him to hit his third shot from the tee, but Ito remained calmed and made an impressive bogey to avoid letting any other fellow com-

In total, Ito made 10 birdies over the two days. Finishing in a tie for second place were Cohn and Masato Yoshitsugu of Aichi, Japan, with tournament totals of 153. Karl Vilips of Melbourne, Australia, returned to the winner’s circle once again as he dominated the Boys 14 & Under Division at Black Diamond Ranch. I offer Private and Junior Lessons along with Tournament Representative Packages, and our most used and in demand, the Company Reward Package.” Chris works with clients daily and “due to positive word of mouth it has helped take Executive Links to higher levels. The Company Reward Package enables a company to get out of the board room and on the course where you can bring employees and potential customers together for an afternoon of business conversation with a bonus of pro golf instruction. According to Chris “It is a neat experience to see a client through a microscope, get a feel of their decision making in a laid back atmosphere, and get out of the suit and ties.” Client Tom Fisher says “I had the pleasure of playing several rounds of golf with Executive Links, hiring them as my playing coach. It helped in making the normally difficult shots seem easy for me!...” Tournament Representative Package allows Chris, who can be outfitted in company attire if provided, will play alongside you in any tournament, while he assists in swing instruction as needed. Private lessons can be played in either 9 or 18 holes or in an hourly session that is dedicated to specific areas of your game. EZ ROLLER A golf cart ‘enclosure’ drapes over the
sides of carts to protect individuals from the cold, wind and rain. It is an excellent product and appreciated by those who use who use it. What is less appreciated, however, is the task of rolling it up the ‘enclosure’ conclusion of the ride. Carroll Fisher experienced this frustration and set out to find a solution. “Rolling up the enclosure correctly was almost impossible because there was nothing that kept it stable. When I’d roll up one side tight and the other side was loose. When I rolled them together, they didn’t get tight enough for the straps to fit over them. Also, I saw so many people struggle with that some people didn’t roll it up at all.” Set on trying to solve this problem, Carroll walked by a stack of PVC pipes and things clicked. With a cut here and a snip there, he developed the EZROLLER. It easily attaches to the ‘enclosure’ and rolls the enclosure in a tight roll. It’s light, easy and draws attention wherever Carroll gives a demonstration. “People can’t believe how fast and simple it works,” says Carroll. “I wake up every morning with a smile on my face because it’s selling like hotcakes.” He also gives a money back guarantee. “I offer to give back their money if they don’t like it but so far I have never had one returned.” Simplicity of the EZROLLER is the key and that is mirrored in the extremely reasonable price of ONLY $10 dollars! feature A Dream come True, Once an Idol now a Partner. Sandra Boccieri, Jack Nicklaus, and Stephen Boccieri
Do Your Grips Know Jack? You might wonder how grips would know anything, but the question is simply a tongueand-cheek way Stephen Boccieri, CEO of Boccieri Golf and Inventor of the Secret Grip has chosen to announce that he, and the world’s greatest golfer, Jack Nicklaus are revolutionizing the golf grip industry with his latest product, The Secret Grip. The Secret Grip is a “smart” grip, meaning it employs technology inside the grip. That technology is the same counter-balancing technology Boccieri has been using in his putters and golf clubs for nearly a decade. A former nuclear engineer, Boccieri is an avid golfer. When he retired from his trade, he set out to “build better golfers” through better physics and applied engineering. “Back weighting or counter balancing has been used by many professionals on Tour for years. The pros understand that the MOI of the club is greatly improved by adding weight to the grip end of the club,” said Boccieri. “By raising the fulcrum of the golf club 38
you will improve your ability to control the head.” Clearly he speaks in “engineer” language, but translated for every day golfers, it means you will be able to set the club easier going back and reduce the amount of casting from the top which results in more control, accuracy and distance. What makes the Secret Grip revolutionary is the counter-balance technology inside - a 17-gram tungsten weight injected into the end cap of the grip. The tungsten weight, along with a 40% heavier rubber compound and 1” longer overall length allows players the benefits of counter balancing no matter which brand of golf club they use. With the Secret Grip produced, tested and ready to enter retail stores, Boccieri turned to Jack Nicklaus to endorse the product. Not only was he the world’s greatest golfer, he was a nat-
ural fit to lead the counter-balanced technology story. “What’s the big deal?” asked Nicklaus. “It’s similar to what I have used throughout my entire career.” After trying the product on his clubs, Nicklaus said, “Just tell golfers to put the Secret Grip in their hands, hit a ball and they would know.” It doesn’t get any better than that! Stephen Boccieri shared the numbers from the independent testing and the results were very impressive. The average golfer picked up an average of 3 mph of ball speed, which is equivalent to almost a full club in distance! The results also showed an increase in consistency as well as straighter golf shots. While I was skeptical at first I took Jack’s advice and “put it in my hand and hit a ball.” The best decision I have made this golf season. The Secret Grip, along with the recently launched Secret Grip for Putters is available at leading golf retailers nationwide. Through 11/30/13, Boccieri is offering a free grip to all golfers so they can get to know Jack. Visit www.secretgrip.com for details. Florida Golf Central • Volume 14, Issue 5

Timing of weed control treatments is difficult at times, but cultivations like core aeration and verticutting are even more difficult as they generate lots of organic debris that must be removed. Most of Florida is only a few feet above sea level, and the water table is generally not far from the surface. The increased rainfall has caused the water table to rise and soils remain saturated. As such, tire rutting from vehicles has been a common sight on recent visits. At times, even daily mowing has been impossible. The plant growth regulator, Primo® has been helpful at slowing turf growth and preventing excessive clippings and mower scalping.
Be Patient! Good conditions (below) often require some “ugly” preparations (above).

Be Patient! Good conditions (below) often require some “ugly” preparations (above). I recently visited a course in South Florida with beautiful Celebration® Bermudagrass fairways. Excellent turf density and playability was observed on each hole and it was mentioned that the turf had been verticut in multiple directions earlier in the summer. While the verticutting was aggressive and made the course look “ugly” for a couple of weeks, it is currently paying dividends for the golf facility.
Many golf facilities have or will soon be wrapping up late summer cultivations. Generally I will hear golfer complaints over the next month or two about “thin” fairways from slow turf recovery from the increased rainfall and cloudy weather we experience this time of year. If this happens at your course, have patience, as the turf will continue to heal over the next month or two. In fact, October is one of the best months for growing turf in Florida and generally provides excellent turf recovery. While, it sounds counterintuitive, the more you beat up bermudagrass the better it will respond to regular routine grooming and provide excellent playing conditions for the peak golf season when the weather is more pleasant for playing. (Editor’s note: Growing a stand of turfgrass is like growing any crop, except we don’t harvest and remove the crop like cotton or corn. Instead we renew and invigorate the turf by aerifying and verticutting to allow air, water and nutrients into the rootzone where they are taken by the plants to grow healthy leaf blades for you to play and putt on. The fields and the golf courses may look ugly for a while, but it’s a necessary part of the life cycle of green growing things. Like Todd said, “Have patience,” and then enjoy the results. In all my travels throughout Italy, the one place that reminds me the most of Florida is Torre Guaceto in the south eastern province of Italy, Puglia. Torre Guaceto is a maritime nature reserve; that vaunts powdery white beaches, a vibrant ecosystem of coastal vegetation, birds and sea life as well as world-class golfing at the nearby San Domenico Golf resort, like our beloved State. Amidst this back drop, Gregory Perrucci of the winery Torre Guaceto produces Pietraluna, a 100% Negramaro variety wine with vineyards only 700 yards from the sea. Pietraluna, or
Moonstone, was so named for the rustic seawalls near the sea that sparkle with the light of the moon in the evening. Negramaro, which gets its name from both the Latin and Greek words for black (Negro and Maru), which aptly characterizes the intense black with flecks of blue of the wine, has been grown in the region since the 7th century BC. Negramaro is one of the most planted red grapes in Italy, but is most commonly blended with other local grapes. A pure varietal wine such as Pietraluna showcases the delicate balance and the focus of the berry fruit and sage aromatics of the grape. A hint of vanilla comes through on top of the fruit, but don’t be fooled there is no oak used in the making of this easy drinking wine, making it a great pairing for pasta, soups and vegetable dishes as well as grilled white meats. This wine will never fails to deliver, and is the perfect accompaniment for your next beachside barbeque.
Grip it and Sip it.

Devotion Vodka, which is 100% corn based, teamed up with Allen Flavors, maker of Arizona Iced Tea, the #1 Privately Owned Flavor Company, to develop a process of eliminating sugars as a flavoring agent in vodka. Many mass produced flavored vodkas available in the marketplace have been diluted by sugary flavoring agents. In lieu of sugar, Devotion uses an essence process along with natural flavor compounds to ensure its flavored vodkas maintain sugar-free attributes. KINGMADE Jerky a Big Hit with Professional Golfers PGA Tour caddie’s homemade recipe is popular snack for golf’s stars
KINGMADE Jerky is a relative newcomer to the beef jerky industry but it’s quietly been building a legion of fans on both the PGA and LPGA Tours thanks to professional caddie Jeff King, who created the product and owns the company. King, a caddie for the past 16 years, admits it was out of total boredom one weekend that he decided to try making his own beef jerky in his kitchen in McKinney, Texas. What resulted after weeks of tinkering with recipes and cooking methods was a frenzy at every tour stop with players and caddies lining up to buy the product. “I always enjoyed eating beef jerky but the stuff I found in convenience stores and gas stations was terrible,” said King. “I knew there had to be a way to make a premium grade jerky and satisfy the health-conscious tastes of the players out on tour.” Such was King’s instant success, that he found he was making over 170 pounds a week to meet demand. Today, over 100 tour players eat KINGMADE Jerky. Tiger Woods, Matt Kuchar, Davis Love III, Ricky Fowler, Dustin Johnson, Graeme McDowell, Candie Kung, Yani Tseng, Azahara Munoz and Jane Park are just a few who enjoy this healthy, high protein snack. “It’s hands down the best I’ve ever had,” said Matt Kuchar. “I’ve always enjoyed going around the country 46
tasting handmade jerky, and nothing’s close to this stuff for its flavor and tenderness.” The company’s thematic is “Superior Sustenance for Active Sophisticates” and marketing efforts will focus on attracting the active
consumer who enjoys outdoor activities and needs a convenient and healthy snack to fuel their athletic pursuits. What makes KINGMADE Jerky so delicious is that King uses one hundred percent flank steak with spices. Importantly, KINGMADE has five times less sodium and sugar Jeff King than any of its competitors and does not add any MSG or nitrites. King no longer makes the jerky in his kitchen. Instead, he sought the expertise of C&C Processing in the midwest. A well-established, family-owned meat processing plant, C&C worked with King to produce the exact same excellent tasting, high quality jerky that came out of King’s kitchen. It was a eureka moment. With C&C overseeing KINGMADE’s production, King was able to get back to what he loves the most, caddying on tour. Beef Jerky is a $2 billion dollar a year industry and KINGMADE Jerky is ready to take on its competitors. As King likes to say, “we are a premium protein for a different kind of carnivore.” KINGMADE Jerky comes in three flavors: Sweet Chili Pepper, Classic and Buffalo Style. The product sells for $8.00 for 2.25 ounces, and also is available in one pound bags. For more information and to place orders, visit the company’s website at www.kingmadejerky.com. Where you want to tee, in Manatee Located within ten minutes off the intersection of I-75 and Route 64 in Manatee County, the Waterlefe Golf & River Club is one of Central Florida’s hidden gems. The name says it all, “Golf & River Club”. I’ve had the opportunity to play Waterlefe several times and am glad to review it for our readers this issue. In some ways you may wonder if the name shouldn’t be Waterleft, or Waterright, since nearly every hole has water included as a hazard, or an aesthetic feature. Of all of the courses in Central Florida, this is one of my favorites. The course was designed by Ted McAnlis, who must have quite an imagination as he used the natural fauna, paired with a variety of water features to create one of Central Florida’s most naturally beautiful courses. The course is set along the Manatee River and is comprised of a collection of signature golf holes. The layout represents a challenge for golfers of all skill levels. There are five sets of tees ranging in length from 4700 to 6908 yards. There are five holes that touch or border the scenic Manatee River. The first hole gives you a glimpse of what you can expect throughout your round…water. From the Blue Tees (measuring 6462) the first hole is a dog leg left par 5, with water to the right that comes into play off the tee and water on the left, which can provide a watery grave for wayward second shots. Hole #6 is another challenging par 5, water isn’t the challenge as much as the placement of your second 50
shot. The hole doglegs at the very end, and if you aren’t far enough left you better be able to hit a medium iron high enough to clear the tree at the corner and stop it on a dime. The front 9 ends with a daunting par 3. From the tips #9 plays 231 yards, from the blues it’s 198, both of which become even more challenging if the wind is in your face. As if the distance wasn’t enough, your shot is hit over a water and plant engulfed chasm. Making par on this hole is a hard earned trophy. Those of you that are baby boomers may remember the “Why did the chicken cross the road” litany of jokes, but the basic answer, “To get to the other side” is an understatement at Waterlefe. When you cross the road and get to the other side, or the back nine, you are instantly met with a 542 yard (from the blues) par 5 with woods lining the right side of the fairway and homes with beautiful boats “out back” on the left. The designer’s creativity really comes into play on holes 14 through 18. A rather short par 5, #14 measures only 462 from the blues. But what you don’t know is how the 462 yards is set up and chopped up. Your tee shot better be accurate, since there’s water on the left and the right. Just because you find the fairway off the tee, doesn’t mean you’re off the hook. The second shot requires some thought. Lay-up short of the “junk” and hit a 135-150 yard shot into the green, or hope you catch your second shot flush and fly it over. I learned the hard-way, layup and assure yourself of at least par.
Although I have hit my second shot on the green and had an eagle putt (missed it, but got the birdie). The Par 3, 15th hole runs parallel to the Manatee River, is only 161 yards long, but there’s something about the water all the way down the right hand side of the hole and having to hit it 150 dead straight into a constant headwind, or crosswind that makes this hole much tougher than it looks on paper. Hole #16 is a fun dogleg left par 4, don’t even think about hitting driver here. There’s no room for error. Hole #17 has a “chain” of tee boxes that range from 391 to 291 for the ladies. From the tips you feel like you are hitting your drive from somewhere in the middle of the Manatee River. The #18th hole is a dogleg right, with water down the right hand side. The biggest challenge for me is hitting a draw down the line of palms that border the water, without hitting one of them. I’d like to say the most fun I’ve ever had playing the 18th was making par, which I’ve done. But the real fun was helping a boat owner lift their $100,000+ boat out of the water, over the locks and into the river. That made me more nervous than a 6 footer to break 80. After a fun 18, stop in the Grille Room for a sandwich and soda (or beer). The food is great and the service friendly. For more information about the Waterlefe Golf & River Club, visit www. waterlefegolfandriverclub.com, or call the Pro Shop at (941) 744-0393, and tell them Duffer Dan sent you. Rod Perry Defends Section Championship Title Rod Perry, Crane Lakes Golf & CC, held off Donny Lee, Core Golf Academy, to defend his title in the North Florida PGA Section Championship contested at Hammock Beach Resort on the Ocean Course. Gusty winds made the final round a challenge but Rod finished the 54-hole competition at 4 under par, one shot better than Donny. It’s been quite a dominant season for Rod, as he had just returned from the PGA Cup Matches in England. Rod also won the National PGA Professional Championship this year. Needless to say Rod Perry finished our season at our 2013 Player of the Year. In the Section Senior Championship, Stan Cooke, Golden Hills Golf & Turf, withstood the charge and held off Bill Sellers, CC of Orlando and Mike Smith, Titusville to finish at 4 over par. Bill and Mike finished at 6 under. Sellers’ strong finish propelled him to win our 2013 Senior Player of the Year. Finally, our Legends Champion was Richard Bianco, Hunters Creek, posted 229 to take the title. The Ocean Course was a spectacular venue 54

The SFPGA Foundation Will Dedicate Their 2nd Home Through Habitat For Humanity On Saturday, October 26th in Jupiter at the Kennedy Estates II the South Florida PGA Foundation will dedicate their second home in three years through Habitat for Humanity of Palm Beach County. This year’s recipient is a single mother of three. On June 4th eight SFPGA Professionals and staff arrived on site in Jupiter with hammers and nail guns ready to build, and over the course of the last four months that is exactly what they did. Over fifty Professionals, junior golfers, and South Florida PGA friends’ volunteers over 700 cumulated hours to constructing this home. Task performed included everything from installing trusses to painting door frames. This home will mark the second home that the South Florida PGA Foundation has supported in south Florida and as SFPGA Executive Director, Geoff Lofstead states, “we hope to sponsor one of these homes each year and eventually have one in each of the 14 counties which are part of our section.” All are welcome and encouraged to attend this dedication ceremony on the 26th, it will begin at 9 AM. NNGA: A Brotherhood of African American Golfers
The National Negro Golf Association (NNGA) was founded in 1965 when a small group of African American professional students reunited to relive some of their college glory days. Its birth was not conceived from a strong interest in golf, but the love of camaraderie and fun. However, golf was the vehicle which brought them together in Lebanon, PA; a mid-point between New York, Washington, DC and Cleveland; the original three chapters. Today, the NNGA: A Brotherhood of African American Golfers, is a premier traveling golf club with seven chapters nationally and over 230 members. Each chapter maintains its own schedule, but three tournaments are held nationally where they convene for “fun, camaraderie and golf.” Earlier this month, over 150 members and guests met at the Hammock Beach Resort in Palm Coast, FL for the

Clewis Wright (Independent) also captured the Senior Low Gross and was crowned Champion of Champions by defeating all other chapter champions. Oliver Jackson, a super-spry “Super Senior” from the Washington, DC chapter was awarded National Player of the Year for posting the low net score over all three tournaments. One hotly contested category was the National Team Championship where each chapter competes for a cash purse of $2800 throughout the season. The

Each night featured a vibrant hospitality suite in the Hammock Beach Resort penthouse and the event culminated with an awards banquet cruise aboard the Sundancer yacht. “As we move towards a half century of existence, we believe we have established a style and standard of fun that appeals to golfers from very diverse backgrounds,” said Winfred Kirksey, NNGA National President. “Hammock Beach was the ideal location for our National Championship. The weather, quality of accommodations, golf courses, and service was consistent with what we provide our brothers and their guests. We will keep it in the rotation.” In 2014, NNGA tournaments will be hosted by the Atlanta chapter in their home town, the Independent Chapter in San Diego, CA and the National Tournament will take place in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. Old Memorial Golf Course was the host of the 2013 Tampa Bay Sports Commission Golf Tournament. Rain threatened to impact the event, but the Golf Gods smiled upon the participants who had gathered to raise funds to support the mission of the organization. The Tampa Bay Sports Commission is a private, non-profit, 501c3, charitable corporation that serves the entire Tampa Bay area as the lead organization for bidding on and hosting premiere sports and entertainment events. Through this, they will achieve their mission of creating social and economic impact

throughout the Tampa Bay region. The Commission has been responsible for the impact of events, such as the 2011 Men’s NCAA Basketball 2nd & 3rd Rounds, the Dragon Boat Races, Gasparilla Distance Classic, Outback Bowl, and in January 2014 the International Junior Golf Tour comes to Tampa. Speaking to the Commission’s Executive Director, Rob Higgins and Senior Director, Jason Aughey, both are appreciative of the opportunity to be leaders within an organization that will have facilitated more than 130 amateur events within the 2012-2013 fiscal year. Working inhouse with Visit Tampa Bay, the convention and visitors bureau, the Commission is the lead organization for bidding on and hosting sports and entertainment events throughout the bay area. Jason commented on the patriotic pride felt this summer as more than 600 Veterans competed in this year’s National Veterans Wheelchair Games. This year’s Golf
Tournament was played on the very exclusive Old Memorial Golf Course, which provided a unique opportunity to experience the Steven R. Meyers designed course that opened in 1997. Old Memorial lived up to its’ billing as one of the finest golf courses in the State of Florida. With meticulously maintained fairways and greens quality golf shots were rewarded with opportunities to score. Teams were also given the opportunity to benefit from the driving prowess of a 12-yearold female golf phenom, Latanna Stone. Latanna, being a Tampa Bay Sports Commission Youth Spotlight, exudes everything the Commission represents as an organization and what this fundraiser was for, youth and amateurism. Here are some of her biggest highlights – At age seven, won the U.S. Kids World Championship · At age nine, was the youngest girl to ever play on the Florida Junior Tour, Currently the youngest female to qualify for the U.S. Women’s Amateur in 2012, she has won over 100 tournaments. This year’s tournament featured winners from organizations across the all spectrums. Still, the real winner is the Tampa Bay area, as the funds raised during this event help support the efforts to procure sporting and entertainment events that raise the profile of the Bay area throughout the United States and internationally. By Rick Harris, Sr. flocked to her to let her know that they are aware of who is REALLY in charge! Due to my part-time association with Florida Golf Central magazine (FGCM) the publisher, Terrie Purdum, has been very supportive and is allowing me to KICK OFF THE 20TH ANNIVERSARY of SAGA campaign with this article and a membership application to build up the enrollment for the 2013-14th golf year! Here are some general facts YOU should know:
Actually it all got started in the summer of 1994 after I had been working for “Florida Golfweek”, the weekly golf newspaper started by Charlie Stine in Winter Haven, Florida on a part time basis over a ten year period. I was the Director of Golf for the Orange County, Florida area and ran senior golf tournaments about three times monthly. When it became clear that the golf division of the magazine had decided to go in a different direction regarding senior golf tournaments I politely handed in my written resignation and informed management that I would be contacting all the golf seniors I knew and forming my own organization. I knew there was a need for this service and contacted every senior golfer that I could think of and informed them that beginning in October of 1994 the Senior Amateur Golfers Association (SAGA) would be holding its first golf tournament at Ridgewood Lakes golf course in Davenport, Florida south of Orlando. I remember that event like it was yesterday when TWENTY plus one or two others showed up! For a guy that was used to fields of 40-50 players it was disappointing but the good news was that they all came from different parts of central Florida. I had players from Ocala, Clermont, Lakeland and of
Rick Harris, Sr. course Orlando who participated that first day. I got out a newsletter with the next five events and by the end of the 1994-95 season the membership had grown to about 60 players. Strictly by word of mouth and referrals from my players the membership grew up to 120 plus and hovered between 110-120 plus as members passed on for a variety of reasons including “passing on”. Another reason SAGA grew over the years is because I “employed” my wife Betty as a “secretary” and she has done an excellent job to the point where when some members call they DON’T want to talk to me but to “someone who REALLY knows what’s going on “as to tournament dates, entry fees, and annual dues. When I have spontaneously brought her along to some outings SAGA members have
