PRESENTed by FGCM We here at Florida Golf Central Mag have covered more charity golf events than any other regional Golf Magazine in the world, and that’s a fact! I feel extremely lucky to be publishing content that my staff and associates seem to find worthy of the printed and online version that supports all those charities. We see first hand the dedication, hard work, the volunteers and celebrities, organizers, Terrie and friend Ester and most important the philanthropy that make an event a success. In a charity golf tournament so many people think success is measured by the funds raised. I personally see it is the fun everyone has just being involved, and playing a game they love on the beautiful courses that host all these events. That’s an accomplishment, that’s Success! All throughout his life John F. Kennedy was puzzled by the question of success. He put it this way, “Success it is the full use of your personal power along the lines of excellence” For me it is simply finding the courage to live by my true destiny. Tap into my personal power, rise to the level of what I owe myself and everyone who continues to give of themselves. The magazine provides a forum to engage other like minded people, givers not takers. Not worried about what they can win, but how their participation enhances the event and makes a difference. For your personal growth and character development, discover your unique talents (no not that you pervs) and then express them so that your work benefits others in society. Up to 50% of our editorial is covering charity events. If you ask, you will get magazines for the goodie bags and post event editorial features. Present yourself and you will find your destiny, Happy Giving.

FRLA Member: PGA National Resort & Spa Fresh off its comprehensive $100 million revitalization, PGA National Resort & Spa is a world-class golf, vacation, meeting destination and a member of the Florida Restaurant and Lodging Association. The South Florida locale offers 90 holes of championship golf on five courses, including the famed Champion Course, home to the popular PGA TOUR Honda Classic and past host of the Ryder Cup, PGA Championship and a litany of other prized professional golf tournaments. The Champion showcases the legendary “Bear Trap” – one of the most difficult three-hole stretches in the game. Holes 15, 16 and 17 are where designer Jack Nicklaus famously said, “It should be won or lost right here.” On-site programs from both the David Leadbetter Golf Academy and the Dave Pelz Scoring Game School, along with tour level custom club fitting from the PGA National Club Fitting Lab, are available. The property recently announced the completion of extensive bunker revitalization under the direction of course-designer Jack Nicklaus. The Champion Course – the toughest layout on the 2013 PGA TOUR schedule (non-major venues) with an average per round score of 1.318 over par – now features 62 new bunkers. The hazards were redesigned to improve amateur golfer pace of play, yet still present formidable obstacles
10
for the world’s best players when they vie for the 2014 Honda Classic trophy. New bunker features include a revamped drainage system as well as state-of-the-art G-Angle bunker sand, ideal for the Florida landscape. “It is exciting for us to continue to upgrade our flagship golf course in tandem with our recently completely $100 million resort enhancement,” says Lukus Harvey, PGA National Resort & Spa’s Director of Agronomy. “The new bunkers will help our hotel guests and members navigate the Champion Course at an optimal pace while still challenging TOUR players during the first stop of the ‘Florida Swing.’” Originally designed by Tom and George Fazio, The Champion Course was redesigned by Nicklaus in 1990. The par 72, 7,048-yard layout features generous landing areas and spacious TifEagle greens. Though golfers are continually presented
with strategic challenges throughout the round, five sets of tees provide playability for players of all skill levels. World No. 1 Tiger Woods – who lives in the area — says of the Bear Trap, “There are no bailouts. You have to commit and hit good shots.” When asked about the Bear Trap, Nicklaus says, “It’s not about length, it’s about precision. It’s about guts. It’s all about what do you have in your chest that you can finish those holes.” PGA National also features The Palmer, The Squire, The Fazio and The Estates courses. The legendary destination has the unique distinction of being home to both the David Leadbetter Golf Academy and Dave Pelz Scoring Game School, along with offering a TOUR level fitting experience at the PGA National Club Fitting Lab. The Annual Florida League Celebrity Golf Tournament, presented by UBS Private Wealth, proved to be a continued success. The tournament, now in its 6th year, fielded 28 fivesomes, as well as top Major League Baseball celebrities with a combined 191 years of MLB service, 851 home runs, 4940 strike outs, 15 AllStar Appearances, 6 First Round Picks, 3 Silver Sluggers, 5 World Series Titles, and 1 Cy Young Award. The tournament was once again played at the prestigious Interlachen Country Club in Winter Park. All proceeds throughout the weekend benefited the Florida Collegiate Summer League, which is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. The weekend began Sunday morning with the 3rd Annual Celebrity Pitching & Hitting Clinic. Current and former MLB stars joined the Florida League and 35 aspiring youth baseball players in Winter Park at nearby Alfond Stadium. Celebrities that took part in the clinic were: Stan Boroski, Mike Stanley, JR House, Kris Benson, Bobby Bradley, Kawika Mitchell, Austin Chubb, Ken Kelly, Mike Powers, Kevin Davidson, Rob Sitz, Scott Hilinski, Kevin Gallaher, and Jamie Quinn. The clinic lasted three hours and focused on pitching and hitting essentials taught by each of the MLB veterans. The clinic was closed out with a word from JR House, Minor League Manager for the Arizona Diamondbacks, and Stan Boroski, Bench Coach for the Tampa Bay Rays. Tournament activities officially kicked off on Sunday evening with the group pairings dinner and silent auction. Celebrities, golfers, donors, family, and friends of the Florida League were invit16
ed to the home of Mike and Sara Whiting for the event, which was catered by Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar. Former #1 overall draft pick Kris Benson began the evening speaking about his experience in the Cape Cod League and his commitment to helping continue to make the Florida League one of the elite baseball summer leagues in the country. Following Benson, Hunter Pence of the San Francisco Giants and Kevin Davidson each shared a word and spoke about the importance of the Florida League and this event which helps provide collegiate players the opportunity to hone their skills in a family friendly community environment. Mike Zizmer of UBS Private Wealth (Tournament Presenting Sponsor) also spoke to the crowd who had gathered for the evening. On Monday, 141 golfers descended on Interlachen Country Club to enjoy the incredible Florida weather and a memorable day. Upon arrival at the course, golfers mingled with celebrities, warmed up on the driving range, took part in the
putting contest, visited the Nike Golf shop, and enjoyed a buffet lunch. Golf began at noon as the 28 groups took to the course after a welcome from Interlachen Pro Jay Kennedy, Golf Chair Kevin Davidson, and League President Rob Sitz. Upon completion of the golf round, participants enjoyed a full buffet dinner in the Argyle ballroom at Interlachen as prizes were announced for the winners of the tournament, putting contest, long drive, and closest to the pin contests. The Florida League would like to congratulate Mark O’Mara and his group for their Florida League Celebrity Golf Tournament victory as his group won with an overall score of 53 (-19). Overall, through the silent auction, sponsorships, and donations from our generous participants, the golf tournament achieved a new record by raising over $75,000! The Florida League would like to thank all of our sponsors, as well as those who donated items to the golf tournament. It is the generosity of these individuals that helped make this event such a huge success. We would also like to thank all of the volunteers who contributed their time and effort to helping out with the entire weekend. Without the assistance of these volunteers, the tournament would not have run as smoothly as it did. The Florida League would also like to thank all of the participants and celebrities who made the tournament a financial success. The dedication given by each and every party involved is the reason why the 2013 Florida League Celebrity Golf Tournament remains the elite charity golf tournament in Central Florida. Golf + Fitness.
Wait, those two things go together? They absolutely do! Golf is sport that depends on being able to consistently rotate around an axis. The more consistent your movements are, the more consistent your game will be. Here a few exercises we really like to do that can be performed by the golfer who is at any fitness level and any golf level that will be sure to add more life to your game. Mitch and Ian Poulter
Stability Lunge
Dead Bugs
Standing Side Med Ball Slams
Gluteal and core control is key throughout the golf swing. This is a great exercise focusing on both. Using a light dumbbell or kettlebell (5-10lbs), extend the right arm in front of you so the elbow is at a 90 degree angle and the humerus (upper arm) is extended directly in front of the shoulder. Keeping the right arm stable, lunge backward with the right leg striking the toe down first, making sure the lower left leg becomes perpendicular to the floor, and thigh is parallel to the floor (think 90 degree angle in the knee). Step forward to a standing position by squeezing the glutes in the left leg and bringing the right leg up to a 90 degree angle. Repeat 8-10 times then switch arms with the weight and switch legs doing the lunge.
Lying your back bring the feet off the floor keeping the knees bent at a 90 degree angle. Arms are pointing directly up at the ceiling. Using a controlled motion, straighten the right leg forward and left arm overhead focusing on keeping the back in contact with the floor. Retract the arm and leg then alternate with the right arm and left leg. Repeat this 10 times
Using a med ball (as heavy as you are comfortable using) stand straight, hold the ball overhead and slam the ball as hard as you can on your left side. Catching the ball as it is on its way back up, bring the ball back overhead and slam it down on the right side. Each side is counted as one repetition, do as many as you can in a row! This is a great exercise to develop core strength and speed (especially if you’ve had a bad day!!).
Mitch Sadowsky is the Director of Golf Fitness at Lake Nona Golf & Country Club and has certifications as a Sports Performance Specialist, TPI Level 1, and FMS. He currently works with Ian Poulter. 18

“The Driver May Be The Race Car, But The Shaft Is The Engine“ Part 2… “Determined to leave no stone unturned and no shot dropped, I visited the PGA Learning and Performance Center in Port St. Lucie, Florida to have my irons and putter evaluated. This extensive facility is one of the premier practice and teaching centers in the world, as evidenced by college golf teams and pros who attend each spring from all corners of the planet to work on their games. It features almost every cultivar of grass a golfer might find on a course, a wide variety of practice bunkers filled with different types of sand, multiple putting, pitching and chipping greens and a huge practice range that presents all angles from elevated tees to greens. If you like to work on your game, this is golf heaven, and right next door is PGA Village, with three championship caliber courses. Mark Drenga, PGA pro and club fit-

As long as you are consistent, I thought, it really didn’t seem to matter much how far you hit each club. I warmed up with my Ping G2 7-iron, then Mark put me on the launch monitor to see the data of my strike and ball flight. Mark set up a rectangular black plastic “strike plate” Mark Drenga of PGA pointing out the stats for me to hit from, to reveal from his launch monitor readout whether I had the correct lie angle for my iron at the point of impact, given my height and surface. PGA Master club technician Jerry Lovell fixed everything by crafting lead tape to the putter head, giving it a more balanced feel, cutting an inch off the shaft and installing a new grip. Other than that, nothing was wrong. Net result: Mark recommended I consider getting a new center-shafted mallet-type putter that was better suited for my arcing stroke. The end result of all of this? I fully expected that the next time I teed it up I would be driving it 275 down the middle of the fairway every time, puring irons onto each green and draining every putt. What really happened? Unfortunately, golf and miracles are two mutually exclusive worlds, but my drives, when I make a good swing, fly further and roll out longer than ever before. On average, I gained at least 15 yards! I have more confidence that my irons and hybrids are the right clubs for me. I can’t wait to get a new putter, which will certainly shave

It still comes back to 90% of this game being between your ears, but knowing I have the right tools in my hands makes the whole process that much easier. The cost of all this - about what you’d pay for a new driver off the rack. The benefits far outweigh that new driver. Except
that now you may be going out and buying all new clubs, ones that actually fit your swing. Even if you have been fitted in the past, we all realize, albeit reluctantly, that our bodies change as we age, and just like getting your tires rotated and rebalanced, the same should be done for your clubs to maximize their performance.”

With a résumé that includes a magical transformation of an unsightly Boston landfill into the spectacular awardwinning Granite Links golf course, golf architect John Sanford has duplicated that feat with the completion of the longawaited Ferry Point golf course on the East River, in the Bronx, in New York City. The links-style course brings new life to a former landfill that has been an eyesore and dumping ground along the river since the 1960s. The vision and proposals for building a golf course on the treeless 185-acre site had been around
for decades, but finally came to fruition under the Bloomberg Administration. The layout is a Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course designed in collaboration with John Sanford Golf Design in Jupiter, Fla. The Trump Organization won a bid
24
to maintain and operate the property and will invest $10 million to build the new clubhouse. The formal name of the facility is the Trump Golf Links at Ferry Point. “Our experience at Granite Links put us in a nice position to get the Ferry Point project,” said Sanford, who also served as project manager, after a final inspection of the site with Mr. Nicklaus and Mr. Trump. “All the holes are grassed and we’re in the process of seeding the practice facility and then course construction will be substantially complete.” Sanford said Jack and Donald were enthused with the final product. “We walked the entire golf course, start to finish, and I’m happy to say everyone was very pleased with not only the design, but also the grow in,” Sanford said. “Jack was great to work with and Donald is very excited about the layout.” As manager and operator of the facility, the Trump Organization is also responsible for growing in the course, an assignment they handled flawlessly,” Sanford said. “I am very impressed with the Trump Organization,” he said. “They have done an exceptional job with the grow-in.” Sanford said visitors and golfers will be blown away by the course. “The surrounding views are incredible,” he said. “Holes 16, 17, and 18 are on the East River. The Whitestone Bridge is right there. To the west is the Manhattan Skyline, and that’s visible from most of the golf course, so it’s an incredible location.” The golf course is a part of Ferry Point Park, which includes a com-
munity playground area and a 19.5-acre waterfront area. Sanford was able to incorporate some of the invaluable experience he gained working on the Granite Links Golf Club. At that site he capped two landfills with the 27-hole course, seven miles from downtown Boston. On the course design and construction, Sanford worked closely with Nicklaus and the Nicklaus Design team. Sanford also coordinated the work of seven consultants, engineers, landscape architects, and surveyors among others on the project. “It certainly has been challenging,” Sanford said of the Ferry Point project. “It’s been a marathon of high hurdles, but well worth it. The course is phenomenal, a true team effort.” A date for the official opening of the course will be announced by the Trump Organization. Earlier this year Sanford’s work on Granite Links was honored by the American Society of Golf Course Architects (ASGCA) with one of six inaugural 2012 Design Excellence Recognition awards. In addition to Ferry Point, Sanford Golf Design is busy at work on renovations at the Kona Country Club on the Big Island in Hawaii; Kosaido CC outside Sapporo, Japan; and 2 Clubs on the West Coast of Florida. Sanford Golf Design offers expertise in all phases of strategic, sustainable and significant golf course design. Sanford’s services include new course design , construction documents and computer modeling; landscape design and land planning; remodeling and restoration. The company has produced or renovated more than 60 courses across North America and Hawaii, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Egypt, Japan, and Vietnam.

Our Inn on The Lakes Experience One or two of our group of eight golfers had heard about the “Inn on the Lakes” experience but none of us had ever stayed there before. After our night stay and two day golf outing the overall consensus of opinion was: We can’t wait to come back, stay longer, and REALLY experience the many amenities of the Inn on the Lakes! Our first day golf outing was at the beautiful Highlands Ridge-North golf course at we couldn’t have had a more beautiful setting. The course was in excellent shape and it was surrounded by extremely attractive, well maintained homes. So much so that when we approached the tee to the 13th hole par three a man was working in his yard. I called out to him, “You are

really blessed to be living in such a beautiful, quiet and well maintained community.” He smiled at our group and replied, “That is exactly why we bought here several years ago! “After our round we visited the clubhouse and cooled off with a drink or two on
the outside veranda overlooking the green. A little later we checked into the hotel and were given keys to our spacious, elegantly decorated accommodations. After relaxing a bit our group had dinner at the fabulous Chicanes restaurant right there at the Inn. Everything was first class as our servers were ready, willing, and eager to serve us with a wide variety of choices off the menu. Our players enjoyed a meal of everything from baby back ribs to shrimp scampi. After dinner a few members of our group went to the comfortable bar while the others went back to their rooms to watch the football games on television. No wonder Phil Hatfield, the general manager of Inn on the Lakes, was quick to point out that his hotel is, and has been, ranked number one in golf packages for a number of years in the Sebring, Florida area. A field of 176 golfers from 23 programs representing the United States and Canada competed in one of five levels of competition - individual skills (Level I), 9- and 18-hole alternate shot team play (Levels II & III), and 9- and 18-hole individual stroke play (Levels IV & V). From Individual Skills, where John Burkarth of Herndon, Va., won the gold medal for scoring 209 points in six golf skills events, to returning gold medalist Scott Rohrer, of York, S.C., who shot the tournament low 54-hole round of 81-80-81—242 on the par-71 Bay Course for first place in the 18-hole individual competition, the national tournament was overflowing with personal best scores, dogged determination through challenging conditions and teamwork, both on and off the golf course. Cigars and Cars
Phredeaux Smokes Stooges goes back several years with Florida Golf Central Magazine to the days when smoking in restaurants and bars was legal. Back then, I could critique a cigar friendly establishment and give my pros and cons, but things change. What a nice venue and the staff could not have been more accommodating. The Legacy Club is now connected with

The cars were a sight to behold and to wish for. Doesn’t get much better than cigars, show cars, good food and good beverages. The vendors, despite the wet weather, had things under control and moving. I sampled excellent food and adult beverages from most but have to tip my golf hat to the Ahi Tuna from Stonewood Grill & Tavern. How good was that! On a sad note for Phredeaux, Terrie showed me she is the Pin Ball Wizard at the Greenleaf Landscape Maintenance booth. When we left, she had the high score of the evening. I enjoyed talking to the cigar vendors and brought home a nice sample of smokes. Next time I want a VIP ticket so I can sample the single malts and extras that ticket offered. As a critic, I have nothing bad to say about the event. It was an excellent evening. A list of all vendors can be found at http://www.wjrr.com/ common/cigars&cars.html.

Orlando’s Best Kept Golf Secret Isn’t a Secret Anymore! Ventura Country Club is a Semi-Private Country Club located in Downtown Orlando designed by Mark Mahannah in 1981. Mr. Mahannah designed many courses in Florida from the 1960’s through the late 1980’s with the plan of keeping Florida’s natural landscape intact. This attention of preserving the landscape is ever present at Ventura

Ventura Country Club. “The competition is fierce with so many golf choices in the Orlando Area and we are striving to be the Best Conditioned Semi Private Golf Course in Central Florida,” says Mr. Bennett. Ventura Country Club for many years has been known as “Orlando’s Best Kept Golf Secret” primarily due to its location and the presence of the Security Gates. “Everyone thinks that the course is private with three gated entrances. The community is private but the golf course is open to the public. Golfers simply need a tee time to enter and take advantage of one of the few golf courses that are owned by the Homeowners Association where all owners take pride in the facility. It is extremely rare that a golf course is owned, managed and maintained by the Homeowners Association. We do it all In-House and we all take great pride in the golf community we have built here in Orlando and we put all our revenue dollars right back where they belong, in the golf course! Whether you live in Ventura or outside the gates, our goal is to make everyone feel at home.” Ventura Country Club hosts many golf events, corporate outings, fundraisers and with the golf course and the beautiful Lake Ventura as the backdrop the Grand Ballroom and Gazebo are the perfect settings for weddings and special events. 2014 Public Golf Memberships Available starting at $1,250.00 per year!

The Goosinator
Photos by Joel Jackson
A flock of Canadian Geese at the Innisbrook Resort north of Clearwater.
In this issue we take a more whimsical, but very practical look at solving a real turf problem on golf courses. What in the world is a Goosinator? The name literally means, “Goose eliminator” and is a device invented to discourage large flocks of geese from congregating on golf courses and leaving their poop all over the turf. Courses farther north have been using dogs trained to herd, or more bluntly, to harass flocks of geese into finding another place to hang out rather than their golf courses. In fact, scores, if not hundreds of courses, have employed these dogs and they most often become course mascots and/or pets of the superintendents. There is even an annual golf course dog calendar contest depicting these canine maintenance crewmembers. Not every superintendent or course is able to or wishes to utilize these dogs. In those cases, the newly invented Goosinator might be just the ticket to solving the goose poop problem. In Florida the resident goose population isn’t as pronounced, but I have seen fairly large numbers at some courses. And we also can have large native marsh hen flocks, aka purple gallinules that can mess up a green near the water. We are blessed to have a huge list of wading birds and waterfowl that inhabit our Florida golf courses, but on occasions such as seasonal migrations, the urea content of bird poop can burn and damage putting greens and make large 40
Remote-controlled device for controlling goose damage to golf courses. areas of fairways and roughs near lakes and ponds unplayable. The Goosinator is unique way to discourage this damage without harming the wildlife. The Goosinator is a lightweight, remote-controlled device. Think of it as a hovercraft versus a model plane, boat or car. It doesn’t really hover, but it glides easily over different terrains including water. The manufacturer recommends waxing the bottom frequently to help it slide and glide easily. It operates with a trigger-like
throttle for speed control and a small wheel to turn it clockwise or counterclockwise. It weighs less than 3 pounds, stands 17 inches high and is 24 inches long. It has predator like features to make the geese nervous. It is designed for more manicured turf areas on the course, but comes with wheels that can be mounted to operate in the taller roughs if needed. It comes with two batteries and a charger. The holidays always get people questioning what wine to drink, to gift, or to bring to a family gathering. One of my favorite recommendations is Amarone from the Valpolicella area of Italy. This big red wine has both the chops to impress the most discerning pallet and a smoothness that a novice can appreciate. Amarone is literally translated as The Big Bitter, since it derives from the result of a runaway fermentation of a traditional sweet wine called Recioto that, during warm vintages before cellars could be artificially cooled, caused all available sugars to convert into alcohol making a high alcohol dry or “bitter” wine. Amarone, like Recioto, is made by laying grape bunches in baskets in a cool, ventilated area above the cellar called a “FRUTTAIO”. The grapes are left to dry with constant supervision over the course of 3 - 4 months until they have lost one third to a half of their water weight. Once crushed, these grapes yield a juice that is high in sugars, glycerin and aromas, as well as resvaretrol, the heart healthy anti-aging antioxidant. Due to low yields and expensive production techniques Amarone can be

The sweet smell of bitter wine... an expensive wine; so for those that are price conscious or just looking for a lower alcohol alternative to Amarone, Ripasso, at half the cost, can be an excellent solution.
Ripasso, is made with high quality Valpolicella Classico wine that is left age on the pumice of the Amarone pressings, imbuing it with a richness and character reminiscent of Amarone itself. The evolution of winemaking in Valpolicella has been in the area sustainability. Not only are wineries using sustainable farming practices, but wineries like Nicolis are employing
other eco-sustainable practices such as photovoltaics and biomass energy generation. Since 1951, the Nicolis family has lived on the property, when father Angelo founded the winery. Giancarlo, Giuseppe and Massimo, the brothers now in charge of the winery, feel that their good stewardship of the land will not only ensure a product of superior quality, but the health and fortunes of future generations of the Nicolis family. The Nicolis family produces several Amarone and Ripasso wines of the Nicolis and Corte dei Signori brands, with the jewel of the collection being a very low yield Amarone Cru called Ambrosan, which at less than 1.3 tons per acre is the ultimate expression of Amarone and the wines of Valpolicella.

Dr. Alejandro was born and raised in Puerto Rico. Becoming a chiropractor was his dream since the age of 10. Chiropractic care was part of his family’s medical routine. “I hated going to the doctor, but I loved going to my chiropractor,” said Dr. Alejandro. “She always put me at ease and I always left her office feeling great.” It became his dream to share this same special bond with his future patients. The Apontes met and graduated from Palmer College of Chiropractic in Florida. Dr. Bethany, an Ohio native, knows first hand how debilitating pain can be. Her mother was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis at age 17 and has lived with chronic pain for more than 40 years.
Dr. Alejandro Aponte teaches a patient stability and balance exercises.
“When a patient is in pain, it not only affects them, but their friends and families,” said Dr. Bethany. “My only regret was not finding a chiropractor sooner to help her. Our goal is to keep our patients moving so they can remain active and have the pain free lifestyle they deserve.”

Fred Stokes – Not Good Enough To Get Angry Fred Stokes, during his playing days with the Los Angeles Rams as a defensive standout, aligned himself in a strong, powerful and athletic stance. He used his size, strength and focus to his full advantage to coordinated his power. He was an example of a finely tuned athlete exhibiting concentration and talent while blending his inborn gifts to achieve the goal at hand which was to hit as hard as possible. That’s the good news when he was playing football. The bad news is that was also his stance and mindset when he addressed a golf ball for the first time on an L.A. driving range. Fred says, “I couldn’t believe how difficult it was to hit a ball that was just sitting there waiting to be knocked out of the park. I swung and missed, dug out big divots and topped the ball. And those were my good shots! I played every sport growing up at a pretty high level. To put it mildly, it was quite a humbling experience.” After winning the 7th grade Football State Championship in Atlanta, the team bus drove by Atlanta Stadium, home of the Falcons. They noticed on the marquis that the next day the Atlanta Falcons were playing the Dallas Cowboys. There was a unanimous plea by the team to beg the coach to stay for another day to see the game. Unfortunately, the coach said, “Sorry boys. We just can’t do that.” Ten years later Fred was on that same field as an NFL player. The memory of seeing that that marquis and his coach saying, “Sorry boys,” is the ‘goose bump memory’ of his NFL experience. And that includes winning the 1991 Super-bowl with the Washington Redskins! Today Fred lives in Central Florida enjoying his wife and three sons. A junior at University of Tennessee at Chattanooga who plays basketball, redshirt Freshman at Vanderbilt who plays football, and a junior at Lake highland Prep who plays football. He is professional motivational speaker, substitute coordinator for PE classes and coaching at Lake Highland Prep and author. His autobiography is titled, “The Bridge That Brought Me Over.” He also volunteers at Edgewood Children’s Ranch at MetroWest and let’s not for48
get his “Fred Stokes Signature Sausage.” Let’s rewind back to Fred’s first experience on the L.A. driving range. After struggling through a bucket of range balls hacking, chopping, missing and doffing, his friend gave him a tip. Fred explains, “He told me that my swing was too stiff and that if I held the club loose that it would change things a lot. It made a lot of sense so I held the club with very little pressure and he was 100% correct. Straight down the middle of the range with height and distance.
That’s where the CLUB went flying when it flew out of my hands! It was an EXTREMELY embarrassing experience retrieving the club, but that’s golf.” Fred Stokes applies some of his life principles to golf. “Laughter is medicine to the soul.” “Everyone has a gift and purpose. Find what it is and use it.” “DO SOMETHING GOOD AND KEEP DOING IT. KEEP MOVING… GOTTA GO… GOTTA MOVE.” “I don’t play golf, I participate. I realize that I’m not good enough to get angry.” Florida Golf Central • Volume 14, Issue 6

A Legend Transformed – The Vinoy Club, St. Petersburg Thanksgiving is a holiday that allows us to spend time with family and friends enjoying a variety of traditions. For many, it’s turkey, stuffing, pumpkin pie, football, and of course the tryptophan induced nap. This past Thanksgiving, prior to enjoying some turkey, stuffing, etc.., I had the pleasure of playing the Vinoy Golf Club. Originally created by Donald Ross, the championship Vinoy Golf Course was redesigned by Ron Garl in the early 1990’s, who believes a course should , “sit softly on the land”. Having played the Vinoy before the redesign I found the enhancements Ron introduced very appealing. I was fortunate to join the Guckenberger Gang for my round. Brothers Bob, Ken and Ken’s son Jimmy were enjoying a round of golf before returning home for a feast with their family. It was unseasonably chilly, with temperatures hovering slightly below 40 degrees when we tee’d off. Fortunately the temps warmed up as the morning unfolded, which allowed us to peel off a few layers. Throughout the round Bob and Ken shared stories of growing up just down the street from the course, which was called the Sunset Golf Club when it opened in the 1920’s. The course from the tips measures 6626 yards and in the windy conditions we played in felt more like 7000. With a combination of lengthy par 3’s and challenging par 5’s the course rewards accuracy. I’m going to blame my front nine score on the cold temperatures and having to wear more layers than normal. My front nine highlight would have to be the 7th hole, a 525 yard par 5, with water down the right hand side of the fairway, OB left and a “tucked in” green. After a nice drive, accurate 2nd shot and a wedge that dropped right over the top of the flag within 10 feet of the hole, a well deserved par was achieved (but it would have been nice to hit the birdie putt). The front nine ends with a one of the longest par 4’s in Florida, a 465 yard monster. 50
The back nine the temperatures warmed up and my score came down. With a birdie on the par 4 12th, a par on the very challenging par 5 16th (The St. Pete/Clearwater CVB’s pick as the Best Par 5 in the Tampa Bay region). The 16th has water left, water right and an island green that leaves no room for error. You finish the round on the very picturesque 525 yard 18th, which from the tips begs you to try to take off as much as possible over the water. Keeping your second shot on the left side of the fairway sets up a more comfortable approach shot to a green that is semi-circled with water. It was nice to close out the round with a strong par. After 18 holes with the Guckenberger Boys I not only enjoyed the round of golf, but came away with a wealth of history about the course and the Club. If you are planning a trip to the Tampa Bay area, or a local resident looking for a distinctive resort
experience, the Vinoy Renaissance Resort St. Petersburg Resort and Golf Club is an exquisite destination. The resort is a historic Mediterranean styled hotel that was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places in 1978. For information about the resort and golf club, call 727-894-1000 for the resort and 727-896-8000 for tee times. For Vinoy Club information visit www.vinoyclub.com.

Start Your Youngsters with It’s important to get kids active at a young age, here’s why... Recent research, which has been reported in Pediatrics, the Official Journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics, indicates that a lack of physical exercise is the big reason for the rise in obese children even more so than caloric intake. In fact, a recent study of 13,000 young people found that, on average, obese teens consumed fewer calories than their friends who were slimmer.
Why is this important with our youngsters?
become so sedentary with hours and hours sitting in front of a computer or TV. We don’t climb stairs anymore. We take our children everywhere in a car, instead of walking or riding a bike. Children don’t just go outside and play. And the sedentary research is proving this to be true. We need to get our children active, moving, fit, and playing more sports.”
Why SNAG®? Recently, the NGF reported that attrition rates for golf have flat lined in 2012. The many benefits this lifetime
A section of The Physical Activity Council report, which states that nearly 70% of the country were not active to healthy standards, revealed that young, overweight children (age three to five) tend to keep their excess weight as they get older and remain obese despite caloric restrictions. This is similarly true of a sedentary lifestyle and can be very difficult to change to an active lifestyle once it has taken grasp.
• Why do kids stop participating?
PHIT America Founder, Jim Baugh had this to say:
“This study is eye opening. While the food industry has taken the heat as the major ‘cause’ of childhood obesity, we have known that inactivity is a bigger issue. Look at our society. We have
sport has to offer shouldn’t be lost through retention and attrition problems, especially if we can properly introduce new players to the game and create a fun and ACTIVE environment for our youth.
We can do better in utilizing this lifetime sport to engage more active lifestyles...
• Why do kids participate in sports?
Research will defend that the number one reason for both girls and boys is to have FUN. Kids have fun playing sports when they can interact with their friends. 58
SNAG®’s programming provides a safe learning environment in which numerous players can be instructed at once, creating a positive social climate that resembles more of a team sport atmosphere versus an individual.
Children are more likely to quit playing if they have low perceptions of their competence. The SNAG® Coaching System has been modified to fit the needs of new learners but still contains the aspects in traditional golf. These modifications to equipment and games provide opportunities for any new learner to find initial success, and more likely to be coming back for more! “I continue to believe that if children are given the necessary tools to succeed, they will succeed beyond their wildest dreams!” ~David Vitter Our manuals are designed to accommodate teachers from all walks. If you’re a physical educator, golf professional, recreation professional, special programs instructor or just someone interested in bringing golf to their community, we have a curriculum designed to fit your needs. The SNAG® Coaching Kits include clubs, targets, training tools, balls, launch pads and specially designed equipment carriers. It is the mainstay for any professional training groups of new learners at any age or ability. The only difference between the coaching kits we offer, are the size of club included and the quantity of each equipment piece contained within the large or small kit. With the purchase of your coaching kit, access will be granted to the various coaching manuals we provide for the various programming needs of our instructors. The $20,000 donation will support Operation New Hope’s Ready 4 Work program, designed to assist in curtailing prison recidivism and since its inception has assisted more than 2,500 participants. “This was an incredible day. To have such a distinguished group, the Red Coats, come and bring us a nice check along with wonderful gifts for our clients is beyond words,” said Operation New Hope Founder & CEO, Kevin Gay. “As you can see, the impact of THE 60
our donations have gone and will go to make their efforts possible,” said 2013 Tournament Chairman Robert Davis. “We’re extremely proud to support so many charities throughout Northeast Florida, and Giving Back Month has been a tremendous platform for us to do so.” Other Giving Back Month events included Fred Funk visiting the Ronald McDonald House of Jacksonville, THE PLAYERS Birdies for the Brave Tournament at TPC Sawgrass, THE PLAYERS volunteer leadership party where the 2013 tournament charity total was unveiled, and a Jacksonville Jaguars closest-to-the-pin competition featuring Mark McCumber. THE PLAYERS generated $7.1 million for local charities during the 2013 tournament, eclipsing last year’s recordbreaking total of $6.5 million. The money generated by THE PLAYERS each year benefits more than 300 charities throughout Northeast Florida, totaling nearly $60 million in charitable giving since the event moved to Ponte Vedra Beach in 1977.

Legends at The Villages Hundreds of people turned out for A Lesson with the Legends at The Villages Polo Field. The turnout was impressive because it is likely that the four golfing legends there will never be on the same stage ever again. Legend is a term that gets thrown around loosely but golfers Jack Nicklaus, Jim Furyk, David Duval and Michelle McGann, the four that took the stage in The Villages, do define legend. If you were to combine all of their on-course accolades that would be 20 major championships (Nicklaus 18, Duval 1 and Furyk 1), 109 Tour wins (Nicklaus 73, Furyk 16, Duval 13, McGann 7) and 584 Top10 finishes (Nicklaus 286, Furyk 161, McGann 69 and Duval 68). Now that is impressive. Throw in both Duval and Furyk’s rounds of 59 and it is even more impressive. Like so many golf events, the gathering in The Villages was for charity. One hundred percent of the admission price went to two military veteran organizations: Combat Veterans to Success and K9s for Warriors. Veterans that went through either of the programs got a front row seat in an audience that went 100 rows deep. McGann and Furyk were particularly fascinated by the retirement community dubbed “The Disney World for
Michelle McGann and Jim Furyk 62
Michelle McGann and Jack Nicklaus Adults.” Rows and rows of golf carts, the number one mode of transportation in The Villages, lined the polo field. Both were shocked how large the retirement community and even more surprised that there were some many golf courses on the property. Eager spectators listened intuitively as each legend told fun stories from the tour. Each also shared golf tips, whether it was short game execution, hitting a fairway wood out of a bunker or correcting a slice. Golf Channel’s Charlie Rymer was
the day’s master of ceremonies. In the January edition of Florida Golf Central magazine, we will profile Army veteran David Moore. Moore, who was at the event in The Villages, went through the K9s for Warriors program after serving two tours of duty in Afghanistan. David Duval’s mother Shari Duval built the K9s for Warriors organization from the ground up after another one of her sons returned from Iraq with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Learn more in our next issue.

Helping Hands 2013 Golf Invitational – A Star Studded Affair
Mediterra Named Among America’s Healthiest Clubs Mediterra, Naples’ premier golf and beach club, continues to receive local and national accolades as one of the best places to live and play. Now, the Club at Mediterra has been named one of America’s Healthiest Clubs, ranking it among the top 10 percent of private clubs for its commitment to fitness and wellness for members and staff. Mediterra now qualifies for inclusion as one of 2013’s top 100 healthiest clubs in the country. America’s Healthiest Clubs program is presented by Prevo Health Solutions, a California firm specializing in workplace wellness, member usage, retention and recruitment for the club industry. Clubs are scored in five categories: fitness,
nutrition, staff, members and facilities. Only those receiving 800 points or more on a 1,000-point scale qualify as a healthy club. An on-site visit in September generated a 70-page Health Report that called Mediterra’s number and diversity of fitness classes “exceptional in comparison to other clubs,” and cited the fitness center’s use by 65 percent of all members as “astounding.” The report
64
also recognized the club’s food and beverage department for offering diverse menus and healthy options, including gluten-free and heart-healthy dishes, and dubbed the community a “trendsetter” for introducing its popular bocce league, creating a virtual fitness program and being among a handful of private clubs offering the MyZone heart monitoring system and integrated body composition. “The latest equipment, newest teaching techniques and cutting-edge technology are readily available with a full calendar of events to meet the needs of the members,” the report noted. “The Club at Mediterra offers members some of the most advanced fitness and exercise equipment available on the market and the most comprehensive and integrated playerspecific golf and tennis conditioning programs we have seen.” “Our conditioning programs have attracted top certified and trained staff and produced a collaboration between golf, tennis and fitness professionals who work together to integrate conditioning, strengthening and balance into sports-specific instruction,” said Tony Falangas, director of sports operations at Mediterra. “The Club also hosts wellness programs, offers oncall sports psychologists and physical therapists, and sponsors open house clinics.” “The Club at Mediterra eclipses other clubs when it comes to member engagement, wellness, member
participation and programming,” according to the report. “It offers a culture of wellness and a management team that rivals the best private clubs in the nation. We found each of the department heads to be forward thinking, trend-setting, health-conscious leaders with an interest in making each year better than the previous year.” Mediterra CEO and General Manager Tom Wallace remarked, “Our members tell us that our approach to wellness is fundamental to their quality of life and one of the primary reasons they joined.” America’s top 100 clubs will be announced during the Club Managers Association of America’s annual conference in February and featured in the February 2014 issue of BoardRoom magazine. Planned for fewer than 950 homes, Mediterra’s master plan includes more than 1,000 acres dedicated to open space with golf, parks and nature preserves. All of the community’s amenities are membership-owned. Available home designs in Mediterra include single-family estate homes and single-family maintenance-free villas priced from the $650,000s to more than $7 million. ➏ Confessions of a Golf Slut Just in time for those holiday flights comes a book for women that ventures off the fairways into territories unknown to many golfers of the male species. Sports journalist Susan Fornoff, author of “Lady in the Locker Room,” has put a chick-lit sort of spin on a book she briefly considered titling “Drive, Putt, Love,” for its kinship with other memoirs by and for women. The narrator takes up golf in her 30s so that she can meet men outdoors instead of in dark-lit bars, and finds not only a husband but friends, adventures, and an “anywhere, anytime, with anyone” passion for the game and its gifts. She even starts GottaGoGolf, a media company geared to women. The fast-paced story takes some dark twists and surprising turns – does this maybe sound like your golf game? – and sometimes reads like fiction. Widely available in print ($16.95) and ebook ($7.99), “Confessions of a Golf Slut” can also be purchased with an individualized autograph at $25, including shipping, from the GottaGoGolf.com website.
➏ Johnny's U.S. Open: Golf's Sacred Journey 2 By David L. Cook, Ph.D. With a foreword by golfing great, Tom Lehman In this sequel the young tour pro returns to Utopia for a quick U.S. Open tune-up. Instead he receives a life altering challenge from Johnny to spend seven more days in Utopia. Along the way we discover the truth about Johnny’s past, meet his family, and take a trail ride to the “chapel without walls.” Johnny intrigues us again with his old school methods and the unveiling of a new swing—the Utopia Pre-Set. He weaves parables from an antique seed bin and miniature piano to inspire greatness. He uses a wild stallion, round pen and red bandanna to teach the foundations of freedom in the chaos on game day. Because of a natural disaster, the U.S. Open is moved at the last minute to a new first time venue. It becomes the most difficult tournament in the history of the game, providing a showcase for mental toughness and a backdrop for a showdown with the greatest players in golf. In the end, it’s Johnny’s influence as a dream-guardian that alters eternity and the National Open. It truly becomes “Johnny’s U.S. Open.” 68

Miura Golf, the Japanese maker of the world’s finest forged golf clubs, has introduced its first new blade iron in six years. The MB001 muscleback will join the Tournament Blade and the Series 1957 Small Blade in the Miura catalog of top-quality forged blade irons. The MB001 features sole refinements that help it travel effortlessly through turf. A cleanly shaped top line helps form the look better players prefer, as do both a graceful flow through the transition area from hosel to clubface and an overall compactness. The irons’ more upright appearance at address helps players feel secure standing over the ball, allowing them to swing away with confidence. And clear, striking graphics provide the elite finish that golfers have come to expect from Miura. The MB001 design is the result of years of study and careful consideration of iron performance by the Miura family. The project was led by Yoshitaka Miura, eldest son of founder Katsuhiro Miura and a clubgrinding expert who learned under his father. He heeded the advice of his brother Shinei, who supervises forging operations at the company’s factory in Himeji, Japan, as well as his father.

Michael Putnam 2013 Web.com Tour Player of The Year Michael Putnam was named the 2013 Web.com Tour Player of the Year in a vote of his fellow competitors, it was announced Saturday by PGA TOUR Commissioner Tim Finchem and Web. com Tour President Bill Calfee. The Tacoma, Wash. native was the Web.com Tour’s Regular Season leading money winner with $450,184 in earnings and won two tournaments, the Mexico Championship and MidAtlantic Championship. His wins came in back-to-back events in late May and early June, making him only the eighth player in Web.com Tour history to win on consecutive calendar weeks. Putnam, 30, held the top spot for 15 consecutive weeks (after Mexico Championship, through Nationwide Children’s Hospital Championship), which was the sixth longest stretch in Tour history. 72
In addition to his two wins, the former Pepperdine University standout tied for second at the South Georgia Classic in April and tied for third at the Albertsons Boise Open in July. Putnam had a total of nine top 10s on the year and 14 top 25s, first in both categories. He made the cut in 19 of 23 starts, and was a cumulative 166 under for the year. Putnam was joined on the Player of the Year ballot by Chesson Hadley, Ben Martin and John Peterson. “On behalf of the PGA TOUR, I would like to congratulate Michael on an outstanding year on the Web.com Tour,” said Finchem. “He excelled throughout the season and is a deserving honoree. We wish him all the best on the PGA TOUR. I also congratulate Chesson, Ben and John on their terrific seasons and welcome them to the PGA TOUR.” Florida Golf Central • Volume 14, Issue 6
