Golfweek Amateur Tour/Orlando Opens 18th Season March 22 at Red Tail Golf Club The Golfweek Amateur Tour will open its 2014 season on March 22 at Red Tail GC in Sorrento. Thirteen tournaments are scheduled on some of the finest courses in central Florida. “Last year we played a terrific schedule; this year our lineup is every bit as good” said Tom Mirus, Tour director. “We will be taking the tour to some new courses this year. We are playing eight courses we did not play in 2013. We are excited about the coming season. We will again qualify fifty players (10 from each of the five flights) for the Tour Championship in October. It is being held in Hilton Head, SC now and the players that made the trip last year loved it. I am sure competition for the invitations will be strong again this year. Plus, our players competed for nearly $50,000 in prizes last year.” The Golfweek Amateur Tour/Orlando is the first Florida affiliate of the Golfweek Amateur Tour. There are local tours operating in 30 states and 44 markets with nationwide membership exceeding 4400. The Senior (50 & up) flights will continue play on Saturdays with the regular flights. Senior players may choose to compete simultaneously in Regular flights for an additional surcharge. Senior players will qualify for the senior Tour Championship in November, in Pinehurst. Players are put into flights by handicap/handicap index. Players without indexes may submit recent scorecards to be assigned to a flight, subject to change based on tournament performance. All prizes in all flights are based on gross scores. Entry fees start as low as $75 and include course costs, range balls and prizes. Annual Player Cards are $110. Registration is open now. Golf Industry Leaders Reveal A Plan To "Hack" The Sport As Part Of A Movement To Make The Game More Fun ORLANDO, Fla. –On the eve of the golf industry’s largest trade show, a group of industry leaders presented a plan to more than 1,000 industry members to call on golfers everywhere to “hack” the sport by submitting their ideas to revitalize the game. Since 2004 nearly 5 million people in the United States have left the game for a variety of reasons. Core golfers are down almost 24%. The group, including Mark King, CEO of
TaylorMade adidas Golf; Ted Bishop, President of the PGA of America; Joe Beditz, CEO of the National Golf Foundation; and the man the Wall Street Journal recently ranked the world’s most influential business thinker, Gary Hamel; recognized that current industry initiatives are not working and unveiled an online forum www. hackgolf.org designed to receive ideas from golfers everywhere.

Golf Services and Events Company Introduces new Closest to Pin Event Golf 4 Millions, a golf events and services company, introduced a new competition at the 61st annual PGA Merchandise Trade Show. Golf 4 Millions held a closest to the pin competition at their booth, and the prize on the line was far beyond a new tablet or golf club. The majority of the golf professionals in attendance of the show were in disbelief as the company offered a brand new car to a guaranteed winner – a giveaway 8
unheard of at this longstanding event. Using a Full Swing Golf simulator, Golf 4 Millions offered a free shot to the thousands of golf professional in attendance. The pro landing closest to the pin each hour of the show returned for a final shootout at the Equipment Testing Area. Typical hole-in-one competitions, where no one expects to take home the grand prize, pale in comparison to the excitement generated at the shootout event. This modified event is especially significant due to the distance of the final shootout. Insurance companies require a minimum distance of 150 yards for a prize that is rarely
won by anyone. Golf 4 Millions held their final shootout from 60 yards and guaranteed a winner. Of the 22 golf pros who gathered to take one shot each, 18 year old Florida State Golf Management student Andrew Story landed his shot 1’ 2” from the pin to walk away with the keys to a brand new Volkswagen. Chef Emeril Lagasse Focuses on Farm-to-Table Orlando Restaurants on Emeril's Florida TV Show –Local FRLA Restaurants in Winter Park, College Park and Emeril's own Tchoup Chop Showcased Emeril’s Florida: Season Two is a 13-episode series highlighting the Sunshine State through the eyes of Chef Emeril Lagasse on-location with a focus on food, cooking, events and activities around the state. Throughout the second season, Emeril visits Florida’s top restaurants and resorts. He also prepares some of his favorite recipes which often feature some of the best seafood Florida has to offer. VISIT FLORIDA. Two full episodes of the show feature on farm-to-table restaurants in the Orlando area. “These episodes emphasize the wonderful relationship between Florida’s tourism and agricultural industries which represent the top two economic drivers in our state,” said Carol Dover, President and CEO of the Florida Restaurant and Lodging Association. “The blend of great venues and locally sourced flavors give viewers a feel for what the Sunshine State is all about and we hope it gives them a fresh perspective that will inspire them to visit.” In one of the earlier episodes this season, Chef Emeril spent time in Ocoee with Dale Volkert owner of Lake Meadow Naturals, a local farm supplying eggs to some of the top restaurants in the Orlando area and beyond. After touring the farm, he and Dale whipped up an omelet in the kitchen. Emeril then visited The Rusty Spoon in downtown Orlando where he and owners, Chef Kathleen and William 10
Blake, talked about their leading roles in Orlando’s farm-to-table movement. Emeril took a tour of the kitchen and tasted some of Chef Kathleen’s signature dishes. Then he headed to Norman’s at The Ritz-Carlton Orlando to meet up with old friend and fellow chef Norman Van Aken. The two Emeril with Chef sampled some Kevin Fonzo of Norman’s signature dishes while sharing stories about their long history and how the Orlando dining scene has changed
Emeril and Katherine Grandey tour The Greenhouse2 since Norman’s opened in 2003. In the second Orlando episode of the season, Chef Emeril kicked off things off at Luma on Park in Winter Park. He sat down with Chef Brandon McGlamery to sample some of the restaurant’s signature dishes while talking about how to create fresh locally inspired cuisine. Next, Emeril headed to his home turf at Tchoup Chop, the restaurant he owns, that is located at the Loews Royal Pacific Resort. While there, he highlighted the crafted cocktails they serve including six that are unique to the restaurant. He also met with Gabriel Orozco, the Director of Emeril’s Orlando Operations, to talk about the newest additions to the Tchoup Chop menu including an increased sushi offering and specials made on their new Robata grill, which can reach 1000 degrees. Then Emeril traveled to The
Greenhouse in Apopka, a farm which utilizes tall aeration towers that trickle a specialty blend of nutrient water to the budding plants. The towers can hold thousands of plants with a very high turnover rate, and the farm can consistently produce crops of excellent quality making them a great provider for highend restaurants, primarily in the Orlando area. To wrap up the episode, Emeril visited K Restaurant in College Park owned by Chef Kevin Fonzo. Chef Fonzo’s menu is known for locally sourced ingredients and it changes daily based on availability. Emeril also learns about Chef Fonzo’s volunteer work at the Orlando Junior Academy. He teaches classes and helps the students with their garden. Emeril joins him in his classroom to meet some of his students and then he and Chef Kevin tour the student’s garden. Every Season Two episode premieres

Where were you born? Did you grow up there? I was born in
Orlando, Florida in 1988 and I have been living here in Orlando ever since.
Is “acting your age” over rated? Yes, I don’t believe people actually mature as they get older, I think we all just learn how to behave better when we are in public!
What do you do for a living? I am currently getting a professional
masters degree in Real Estate and will be pursuing commercial real estate brokerage in my future.
Aside from golf; what do you prefer for fun and relaxation?
I love to travel, see new places and eat at unique restaurants! I’m definitely a foodie, every city I visit I google the best restaurants to eat at!
What’s your take on “cuddling”? I love to cuddle, I think it’s sexy.
What’s the most effective way you’ve discovered to check out a hot woman without her, or anyone else noticing?
Well, at 6’8 260 lbs it’s difficult to do anything without people noticing! That said, I will usually order a drink right beside her giving me a chance to check her out and if I like what I see I will say something to her.
Steak, chicken, or seafood? Steak! I am a carnivore for sure, I love red meat. I’ll take a medium-rare steak any day!!!!
Tell us something about yourself that only your closest friends know. I love oldies music, I could listen to the Temptations all day. When you get in my car you can expect to hear Louie Louie from the Kingsmen or another hit from the 60s and 70’s!
Name the three most important things to you in this world. My Faith, Family, and My close friends
What do you fear the most? Living an average, run-of-the-mill life that no one remembers. I strive every day to be productive and make a positive impact on everyone around me.
Pajamas or nude? Pajamas, sleeping nude is too cold for me. I like to be warm.
Favorite comedian? Kevin Hart, He is hilarious Movies:…comedy, drama, action, romance?
I LOVE comedy movies! I’m not really interested in the other genre’s. If I’m gonna spend the 11 bucks to see a movie, you can be assured it’s a comedy Favorite charity to support? I support Toys for Tots. There is no better feeling then putting a smile on a child’s face.

What is the funniest thing you’ve ever seen on the golf course? Just a few weeks ago, we had a tournament and
I pulled up to a green and there was a guy, walking back to the carts with his buddies, putting his clothes back on! Apparently he holed out from the fairway for an eagle and his choice of celebration was to strip down to his boxers and do a dance… according to his friends he is awful at golf, doesn’t play very often and it was total luck. Needless to say, I bet he will be playing much more golf after that shot!
What type of music do you prefer? I enjoy many different types of music, but more often than not you will find my radio tuned to country music!
What hobbies do you enjoy? I enjoy golf, tennis, playing with our dog and I could spend all day laying on the beach!
Relaxed evening at home, or nightclub and cocktails?
Definitely a relaxed evening at home with my husband and our American Bulldog, Mya!
Favorite comedian? Where did you grow up? I grew up in Bryson City, NC, right in the heart of the Great Smoky Mountains.
Which group of people did you associate most with in high school? If I had to pick, I would say the athletes. I have played softball my whole life and still enjoy playing in leagues and tournaments.

My favorite sport to play would have to be golf followed closely by softball. I enjoy watching football, baseball and golf!
Do you enjoy playing golf? Are they’re any golfers in your family? I do enjoy playing golf, it can be frustrating at times,
but I love the challenge and being outside! No golfers in my family, other than my husband, and we enjoy getting out and playing golf together.
What do you feel makes this club special? There are so many
great things about Duran Golf Club! The course is always in fantastic condition, the service is excellent and that staff is a blast to work with! I think what really makes Duran unique are all of the golf options available. Whether you want to play 18, take a lesson, just hit the range or take advantage of our lighted par 3 course, if it’s golf you want, we’ve got it! I really enjoy the par 3 course because my short game needs work and it’s open late!
What is your memorable moment working as a cart girl?
I love country music so getting the opportunity to meet Vince Gill and Gary Allan was really cool. I’ve also had the opportunity to meet ZZ Top and fellow Nebraska fan Larry the Cable Guy! (my husband is a die-hard Nebraska fan, I’m a Nebraska fan thru marriage) 14
What else would you like for us to know about you? Well, my husband is the General Manager at Harmony Golf Preserve. He hired me as a cart girl at a course he was working at as the Head Pro a few years back. Long story short, we ended up married so I guess the stereotypical golf pro/cart girl relationship worked out in our favor!

Jake Owen’s Golf Career His roots are fairly easy to describe. Jake Owen was raised in the coastal town of Vero Beach, FL. He and his fraternal twin Jarrod grew up in the sand and surf. Jake eventually took up golf, and began pursuing a career as a professional golfer, winning his first tournament at fifteen. After graduating from Vero Beach High School, the brothers attended Florida State University where Jake was on the golf team. A wakeboarding accident, which resulted in reconstructive surgery, left Jake unable to continue playing the sport. During his recuperation, his left arm was in a sling. Jake realized that even with his arm in a sling, he could hold a guitar so he started playing guitar and writing songs. 16

I live in North Florida and I am working every day to reach my dream of playing golf in college and one day on the LPGA. I play on the Florida Junior Tour, AJGA, North Florida Junior Tour and the Hurricane Junior Golf Tour. My current handicap is a 2.8 and my career low round is a 70, which I shot in the final round of the Doral Publix Junior in Miami in December. early 2013 entitled, “Toto, were not in Kansas anymore” was a testament to the visual fact that the Red & Blue courses don’t look like any other course in Florida. Having played the Blue during the grand opening of the courses, I played the Red during the resort grand opening weekend. The Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw designed Red Course is nothing like you would expect in Central Florida, or all of Florida. It reminds me of courses I’ve played in Oregon, without the mountain backdrops. My round at Streamsong Red included everything from nearly holing out for an eagle to double bogeying a difficult par 3. Russ Libby– Ready to Take The Next Step If you ask Russ Libby what has had the greatest impact on his life, he’ll answer “golf” without a moment’s hesitation. “My dad got me hooked on golf when I was about 10 years old,” Libby remembers. “I knew even at that young age it was something I wanted to do.” He knew it when he played high school and college golf in his home state of Maine. He knew it when he worked at a variety of public, private and resort courses in Maine, Massachusetts and Florida. He met his wife of 20 years, Tracy, when he was a PGA Professional and she was the Activities Coordinator at the Marriott World Center — the love of his life he says he would not have met had it not been for his golf career. And he’s known it throughout more than 17 years of service to
Russ Libby the PGA on the local chapter, section, and national levels of the Association. “Golf has been at the core of my success in life, and has helped shape who I am. Making a difference in the lives of PGA members and their families and promoting and growing the game are the basis for my mission,” says Libby. “I have been an assistant, head professional, director of golf, general manager and owner. I have served in the board room and on the Board of Control of the PGA. I’m ready to take the next step. The “next step” is running for the office of Secretary for the PGA of America, a position that ultimately leads to the presidency in the world’s largest sports association with 27,000 members. He is one of three candi22
dates seeking the office this year. The election process takes place every other year, with one winner serving two year terms, first as Secretary, then Vice President, President, and finally as Honorary President. Libby spent summers in high school and college working at clubs in southern Maine and learning the business. While an Economics major at Bates College in Maine, Russ competed on the golf team and ran track. He spent his junior year at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland and played on their golf team as well. Before his senior year he passed his playing test and became a PGA Apprentice, setting him on the path for a successful career in the golf business. After a few years at golf clubs in Maine, Florida and Massachusetts and getting his PGA Class “A” Membership, Russ competed on the Tommy Armour Tour for a few years in the early 90s. He was married to Tracy by then, and eventually decided to settle in as a club professional first at Sawgrass Country Club in Ponte Vedra Beach, then as Director of Golf at Deerwood Country Club in Jacksonville. When Hidden Hills Country Club went up for sale in 2003, he and Tracy felt this was the opportunity they were looking for, and became owners of their own private club in the Arlington area of Jacksonville. He continued to be actively involved in leadership roles within the PGA. He served in every officer position within the Northern Chapter and then in the North Florida Section of the PGA. He was named PGA Professional of the Year in 2000, and awarded the prestigious Bill Strausbaugh Award in 2012 and the Horton Smith Award in 2012 and 2013. He was inducted into the North Florida Section Hall of Fame in 2011, only the 18th member to be so honored, the year after Arnold Palmer was enshrined. He was invited by the PGA of America President to serve on the prestigious Board of Control, the ruling body of the PGA. He has been a speaker, presenter and author on a variety of golf topics. He also found time to chair the Golf Course Operators Committee for Florida’s First Coast of Golf, serve on the board of The First Tee of North Florida and San Jose Episcopal Church and coach seven baseball teams

POWER! That’s what we all want right? Develop
club head speed, increase ball speed and kaboom! Our first exercise is a personal favorite and not one of my golfers goes through a week without doing this exercise at least once. The dynamic side lunge is a great exercise to not only get those glutes firing (hello 300 yard drives!) but also to stabilize the posting leg. Start in a standing position, lift the working leg to 90 degrees, step to the side in to a lunge position and one movement, drive off the working leg back in to a standing position keeping the knee at a 90 degree angle throughout the exercise. Be mindful
of keeping the posting leg extended (contract your quadriceps) and keep the foot of the posting leg flat on the ground. The straight leg will work stability on the posting leg gluteals and increase ankle range of motion and mobility/foot stability. Do this exercise 6-8 each leg then switch sides. To make this more challenging, try holding a medicine ball, dumbbell, or KettleBell at chest height with either straight or bent arms. Our second exercise is a Windmill Pushup. I am always careful of doing any chest exercise with my golfers who are also desk jockeys or show any signs
of shoulder instability. Because this exercise is demonstrated on an incline using a Smith Machine, I can adjust the load (lower bar= more pressure= more weight in to the joint and surrounding muscles) and amount of pressure being placed on the joint. This is one my favorite ways to not only teach Push ups, but to add different dynamic elements in as well. In this case we are adding in windmill to assist in thoracic rotation. Start off in a position leaning on to the bar (or floor) with your arms extended. Lower your self and push yourself back up to the starting position. Rotate one shoulder so your shoulders are now as close to 90 degrees as possible. Rotate back down the starting position and repeat the process alternating which side you rotate towards. Start with 10 repetitions (5 on each side) alternating sides each repetition. If you can do more, DO MORE! As an example, our exercise couplet might look like the following: 3 rounds Dynamic Side Lunge x 8/Leg Windmill Push Up x 12 Now let’s get out there and golf! Happy hitting.

The AMAZING CS2/Ian Poulter Putting Aid More than 70 PGA Tour players have been using the CS2 Putting Aid on Tour! Here are some reasons why: One of the most sought after training devices on Tour today is the CS2/Ian Poulter Putting Training aid. CS2 stands for Consistent Stroke/Consistently Square (putter face at impact). It is designed to give golfers visual feedback as well as an instinctive feel for the mechanics of their putting stroke. The CS2 is a two part training system that begins with the base plate. “We recommend golfers start training with the base plate only to understand their own preferred putting path,” said Ronnie Mathews, Managing Partner at Greenactive Golf, manufacturers of the CS2. “We do not believe that there is one ‘perfect’ 26

putting stroke, but rather that each golfer needs to find his own preferred path.” The guide rails on the base plate of the CS2 are completely adjustable to accommodate any sized putter head, and any golfer’s skill level. Additionally, the guide rails can be set up for a “square to square” stroke, or can be arced to accommodate an “inside to square” stroke. This arc can vary from slightly inside, to quite radically inside. The second stage provides training on how to return the putter face to square at impact. In this step the runway is clipped onto the base plate of the CS2, and the two adjustable end gates are clipped onto the runway. The end gates should be set at their widest setting to start. The objective is to roll the ball through the end gates without hitting either side. Once the golfer is regularly accomplishing this, the gates can be made tighter. Golfers will see their putting improve dramatically with continued practice through the tightest setting. The CS2 also teaches the golfer proper alignment and aim. The base plate has lines, which demonstrates a square putter face at address, as well as a reflective patch that shows your head position.

“We do not believe that every golfer’s head has to be directly over the ball; therefore the reflective patch is not used as an ‘eye mirror,’ but rather as a guide for your head position when putting,” said Mathews. “The line on the runway gives the golfer a great visual image of the intended line of putt.” For indoor use, the CS2 comes with its own selfclearing putting cup. This adds the element of correct pace into the home practice routine. If the ball is not struck firmly enough, it won’t go into the cup. Too hard, and it bounces over the back. On the practice green, the CS2’s patented integrated rail and tee system allows the golfer to anchor the device into the green once the correct line to the hole has been established. From this position you can practice in a variety of ways. “Golfers can use the complete device, remove the runway portion to putt directly onto the green surface, or remove the base plate and runway, leaving only the tees in their perfect set up to putt through,” Mathews said. “In this way, the golfer is effectively removing his ‘training wheels’ until he is putting freely.” For more on the CS2/Ian Poulter Putting Aid visit www.cs2putting.com.

Tee It Up For The Troops Hosts 3d Annual “Wounded Warrior Reunion” Despite a constant, irritating drizzle, nothing could dampen the spirits of 30 wounded and injured veterans as they converged on Orlando, Florida in January, 2014 for 3 days of golf, friendship, fellowship, and healing. They came from all across America to participate in the 3d annual “Tee it up for the Troops (TIUFTT) Reunion” at the beautiful Wyndham Reunion Resort and Golf Club, thanks to the dedication of event coordinator Jodi Baer. This special event brings together veterans of all armed conflicts, with many participants being post-9/11 wounded and injured warriors. They were joined by another 80 friends, guests, sponsors, and supporters, many of whom had previously served together in the military, met at Walter Reed, or even shared a hospital room during their long and arduous healing and rehabilitation process. Among the non-profit sponsors playing golf with the warriors were representatives of Military Order of the Purple Heart Service Foundation, Fisher House, Disabled Sports USA, Hope for the Warriors, Wounded Warrior Project, and Purple Heart Homes. To kick off this special weekend, a warm and entertaining evening reception gave everyone the chance to meet and make new friends, or reunite with old ones. After welcoming remarks by TIUFTT founder and host James “JB” Ball, Warrior Tim Lang related the story of how earlier in the day, he reconnected with a warrior with

whom he had served but had not seen in years. Guests were then surprised by the appearance of former President George W. Bush -- oh wait, it was not the President but an amazing impersonation by renowned Orlando resident John C. Morgan. Morgan not only looks exactly like the former President, he has managed to capture perfectly all of his mannerisms and speech patterns. It took some a long time to concede that it was an impersonator and not the real President. Finally, the warriors moved outside to an open air rooftop terrace where they were treated to hand-rolled cigars by a “Fumar Cigars,” a local Tampa cigar maker and proud supporter. The next morning, participants were paired into groups of five players, with at least one warrior joining four other sponsors or supporters to make up a team to compete in the scramble format tournament. Concurrently, those caretaker spouses and family members who were not playing golf met in a therapeutic breakout session to share experiences and advice with one another. As the rest of the nation was freezing, the clouds parted and the players were treated to warm sunshine, underscoring why Florida was chosen as the venue for this

Following the regular play, only the warriors returned to the course to face off against each other in a shootout competition which was won by Chris McCoy after eliminating all the competition. On the last day, most teams were realigned to give everyone the chance to meet and get to know other players. Although the sun continued to shine, the players were subjected to wind gusts as high as 35 mph, making the Arnold Palmer designed course a real challenge. Despite the difficult conditions and, in many cases their own physical limitations, only one stroke separated the top four winners of the tournament. Two warriors, Bill Rosborough and Steven DeVries tied for first place and two warriors, Matt Levine and Aaron Rosenberg tied for second. At the awards banquet that evening, guests were told more about the organization and planned future events by TIUFTT President Tim Wegscheid. A number of the warriors who had taken part in this and other events, gave moving testimony on how they had benefited from the rehabilitation and healing powers of the game of golf and the role and generosity of the TIUFTT organization in that process. All of the wounded warriors who played were inspiring to their team mates, with many playing with single digit handicaps. Two warriors, in particular, were especially amazing to watch -- LTC (Ret.) Kathy Champion served almost 28 years in the Army, first as an enlisted paramedic and, after receiving a commission through ROTC, ultimately commanded a Civil Affairs unit in Iraq. Kathy had survived four tours in Iraq and Afghanistan and some seven IED explosions before Florida Golf Central • Volume 14, Issue 8

returning home, only to discover that a virus contracted in Iraq had affected her optic nerve, plunging her irrevocably into blindness. Despite her blindness, Kathy has become an accomplished golfer. Teeing off from the forward women’s tees, the team often used her drive. Playing with a team of Past National Commanders from the MOPHSF, teammate Fred Taylor just gave her the line, and as Clayton Jones described, “she hit the ball long and straight.” Once on the green, she sank 7 birdie putts over

the course of the two days. For her part, Kathy says she had a “blast.” “They really made me feel a part of the team -- we laughed, joked, and had a lot of fun together,” said Kathy, “The worst thing that happened in the two days is that I broke a nail on the 18th hole.” Another inspiring participant was Jim Martinson of Puyallup, Washington, a Purple Heart recipient who lost both legs to a land mine in Vietnam. Jim is a pioneer of many adaptive sports, fighting for -- and winning -acceptance of wheelchair categories in many competitions. He began “Magic in Motion” as a sports wheelchair company that developed many sports products for the disabled, including the first mono-ski that utilized a monoshock, which enabled disabled skiers to get on and off the ski-lift on their own. As age started slowing him down, Jim turned to golf 3 years ago. Using a special “paragolfer” golf cart that raises him upright, he plays frequently at the American Lakes Golf Course outside Joint Base Lewis/McCord where he also volunteers to introduce other disabled veterans to the game. Golf Marketing Services The 61st PGA Merchandise Show – The “Major” of Golf Business – concluded last month at the Orange County Convention Center with more than 41,000 PGA professionals, buyers and industry leaders attending from 81 countries. One of those leaders and industry veterans, Holly Geoghegan, president of Golf Marketing Services, based in Orlando, completed her 24th consecutive show. She is celebrating a “Major” milestone of her own - the 20th anniversary of her marketing, media and public relations company. “When I attended my first PGA Show in 1990, there were very few women walking the aisles,” reminisced Geoghegan, “Let alone those of us who were in management positions or crazy enough to become entrepreneurs and business owners.” For more than 20 years, Golf Marketing Services has launched a number of innovative products and services specializing in startups and developing them into market leaders. In the ‘90s, before the Convention Center was expanded, many of the new product booths were relegated and crammed into meeting space in the lower level of the Hyatt Regency (formerly known as the Peabody Hotel), recalls Geoghegan. “There were a group of very innovative companies such as, Izzo Golf, Zero Restriction Outerwear, Club Glove, Gustbuster, and Bite Golf that became our clients, said Geoghegan. “I referred
to them as the PGA ‘Rat Pack’. They were the first of its kind designed by a couple of 20-something outdoor enthusiasts from Seattle, Wash. The simple promotion turned into a PR homerun as a mountain of shoes towered in the center of Bite’s booth. The donated shoes were donated to a local charity. Bite was acquired by Crocs™ a decade later. Another memorable event was GMS’ launch of LiquidGolf.com at the 2000 PGA Show. LiquidGolf.com was an online pro shop that was one of the first dot-coms to rock the golf world. The launch was headlined by the party to end all parties, “An Evening of Golf Passion,” fea-

Thousands packed the kick-off event at the Peabody Hotel, which included an open bar. “I think we still have the record for the hotel's largest bar tab,” laughs Geoghegan. “In the early days of the Internet, the game plan was go big or go home.” When GPS technology hit the golf industry, Holly “G”, as she is best known in the industry, and her team helped launch uPro at the 2008 PGA Show. The uPro, a distance-measuring device, was the iPhone of golf GPS. This updatable, smart device was the first GPS unit to come preloaded with thousands of high-resolution aerial images, video flyovers and satellite photography of golf courses with precise yardage to hazards and a realistic view of each hole. Golf Marketing Services handled the marketing and public relations for uPro. The company quickly became a major contender to SkyCaddie and was acquired by Callaway Golf. “uPro was an amazingly engineered product,” said Geoghegan. “We capitalized on its technology and the emergence of smart phones to create the hype in golf. It's one of our best success stories. Every start-up dreams of the ultimate exit strategy and the Callaway acquisition was uPro’s dream come true.” Never letting the grass grow under their feet, GMS teamed up with one of the hottest companies in golf, SuperStroke, at the 2014 PGA Merchandise Show to launch its new putter grip the Flatso. More than 125 Tour players are currently using their grips. SuperStroke also announced that it signed the 2013 PGA Rookie of the Year, Jordan Spieth, as its new brand ambassador. The Big Grip That’s Changing Golf A Brief History of Golf Grips. The very first golf grips could only be called a grip in the sense that they gave the golfer something to hold onto rather than the bare wooden shaft. First fashioned from a woolen fabric, then sheepskin, followed by leather and rubber in the 20th century, the size of the grip was determined by the diameter of the wooden stick it covered, not what fit the human hand. Golfers had to get creative in the way they held their clubs, conceiving a variety of techniques, some of which were passed down to golfers of today. Wintertime is show time in Orlando! Scores of conventions descend on Orlando to take advantage of our “normally” warmer weather than up north! This winter hasn’t been quite as friendly as it could be or normally is, but there are no blizzards for sure! January is traditionally the time when the PGA of America holds it’s annual Merchandise Show, which rolls out the latest and greatest in golf clubs, balls, bags, clothing, pro shop and clubhouse do-dads and frills. The Golf Channel does on site broadcasting with golf bigwigs and players. They also do a smaller version out in Las Vegas in August. Meanwhile, the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA) is on a rotation between Orlando (2014), San Antonio (2015), and San Diego (2016). The Golf Industry Show is also the venue for the Golf Course Architects, Golf Course Builders, Golf Course Owners and the United States Golf Association to get together and kibitz about the state of the game from the grass roots to government regulation. Meanwhile, February 12th & 13th this year was Florida Golf Days in Tallahassee, where Golf Course Superintendents, Club Managers, Golf Professionals and the Florida State Amateur Golf Association met with various legislators to update them on the Economic and Environmental effects that Golf has on Florida. Some quick “annual” bullet points include:

Some activist groups seek to defame golf courses, home lawns and generally any turfgrass uses and raise and spend millions of dollars to that end. However, the only groups that actively seek out the best scientific research to best manage turfgrass with the least amount of inputs and impacts are the turf industries like sod growers, lawn care providers and turf managers for sports turf and golf courses. Taurasi - The Barolo of the South The Italian coastal region of Campania is famous for many things: Pompeii and Herculaneum, Mt. Vesuvius, Naples, Capri and the Amalfi coast, but many are unaware that Campania is just as famous in the wine world for its four DOCG appellation wines, the foremost of which is Taurasi. Taurasi (pronounced Tau-RAH-Zee) which is made primarily using the native Aglianico grape, is in fact known as the “Barolo of the South”, a tip of the hat to the prestigious Piemontese wine, for the complex wine with long aging potential that it has come to be known for. There are several historical wineries in the region producing Taurasi today, but wineries and winemakers like Tenuta Cavalier Pepe and Oenologist

Milena Pepe are making waves with their award winning wines. The Pepe family has been making wine from their 100+ acre hillside vineyard in Luogosano, Sant’Angelo all’Esca and Taurasi for generations, but only began bottling their wines for export in 2005, when daughter Milena Pepe brought a fresh perspective and a women’s touch to the estate’s winemaking. Tenuta Pepe’s Taurasi “Opera Mia” is 100% Aglianico that is hand-picked like all their grapes. Before fermentation it undergoes a cold maceration, which serves to intensify the color extracted and the fruity aromas of the juice. Following fermentation there is a long maceration on the lees, which extract more color, tannins and deepens the bouquet, followed by a minimum 12 months in French oak Barrique. The rules call for another year in the bottle before being sold, but Milena chooses not to release her Taurasi until it is “a complete wine” at times 5 years from the harvest. The resulting wine shows both power and finesse; a deep ruby red with flecks of orange; a complex nose with notes of ripe red fruit in alcohol, amarena cherries, spices, and a hint of smoke, all in an ever evolving mélange of heady delight. The Winery has guided visits available for professionals and wines lovers alike, if you are lucky you might get a tour from Milena or Cellar Master Mirko themselves. The Pepe family’s renowned restaurant ‘La Collina” sits atop of the hill where the winery is located,
and serves world class local fare with a refined and modern touch. Avellino, just a few miles away, sports the 9 hole golf course called Mirabella Golf Club that was created by the Mastrobernardino wine family and is open year round. I’m sure we all have thought about the possibility of doing one of these jobs, but the real question is how do we get there? Is there a way to prepare for the future in the golf industry or is it just the luck of the draw? The answer to this question is yes! The Florida Gulf Coast University PGA Golf Management program has

Kelsey teaching a golf lesson prepared myself along with hundreds of other aspiring professionals to take on the challenges and rewards of the golf industry. Florida Gulf Coast University is located in Fort Myers and is among twenty credited PGA universities in the country. The university has approximately 150 golf courses within an hour of campus. Being a PGA Golf Management student I had the opportunity to play most of these courses and establish relationships. Some of my mentors have come from the section and have helped me with difficult career discussions. I came to Florida Gulf Coast University from Toledo, Ohio when I was seventeen. In August of 2010, I started my first semester of college and was a student athlete for the golf team. After a week, I was admitted into the hospital for a major blood infection and spent a month in the hospital for what the hospital said was the worst case they have ever seen. The significance of this story was that the president, staff and students of the university were in and out of the hospital visiting every day that I was admitted. The president of the university had gave me a stuffed eagle and told me that this was given to him when he got the job as president. He wanted me to return the eagle to him when I graduated. I had to learn how to walk and golf again when I got out of the hospital, but after six months of physical therapy in Ohio I was determined to go back down to Florida and finish what I started. Why do people choose Florida Gulf Coast? It’s the loyalty and opportunity students have to succeed. Internships and part time jobs are a huge part of the learning process at FGCU. My first internship took place at Inverness Golf Club in Toledo, Ohio where I received the opportunity to
work the 2011 U.S. Senior Open. This was a great learning experience for me and taught me what it takes to run such a successful operation. From Toledo, I made my way down to Miami where I did my five month internship at Doral Golf Resort and Spa as an assistant golf professional with retail focus. I learned about merchandising at a high volume resort while organizing Special Olympic golf lessons, women clinics and tournament operations for events such as the Miami Heat golf outing. I also took part in the 2012 WGC Cadillac Championship. As a part time job back at school, I had the opportunity to work as the assistant golf professional at Tiburon Golf Club in Naples, Florida where I learned club repair through the Taylormade Performance Lab, organized Ritz Carlton golf tournaments, worked two Franklin Templeton Shootouts and the LPGA CME Group Titleholders tournament. I also represented the club for the Top 100 golf shops in America at the PGA Show in Orlando. So what happens now? I will be graduating next December with a degree in Resort and Hospitality with a PGA Golf Management focus. Before graduating I will be completing my final internship at Pebble Beach Golf Links in Monterey, California. My future plans are to gain experience and continue to grow and achieve my dream goal of being a reporter for the Golf Channel. Is it scary being away from home? Yes, the fact that my family is 1,200 miles away from me is frightening, but Florida Gulf Coast has welcomed me with open arms and has given me the opportunity to grow and spread my screaming eagle wings towards any path I choose. Finding Winter “Heaven” in Winter Haven I have had the pleasure of playing golf courses located throughout the State of Florida, the Southeast and the United States. The newly redesigned Country Club of Winter Haven is one of the most aesthetically beautiful, natural golf courses I have played. So much of golf in Florida is dependent upon holes that border the Gulf of Mexico or the Atlantic Ocean. The CC of Winter Haven has a view of Lake Hamilton from nearly every hole on the course and natural fauna and wildlife is abundant. My round included the observation of 4 bald eagles. Unfortunately I had no eagles, or birdies during my round, but I did become a big fan of the course. After a very pleasant drive through some beautiful countryside and past a handful of large rural estates, you turn down a drive that introduces you to the natural beauty of the Club. Josh Anderson, the Head Golf Professional introduced himself as I checked in and proceeded to share a bit of the history and most importantly the future of the Club. In 2013 the Club was purchased by a small group of equity Members, which was the impetus for a redesign by Rees Jones and Bill Bergin. Playing the course reminds me of some of the best courses in South Carolina. The course measures 7021 yards from the tips. I played the Blues and at 50
6550 yards, it provided an opportunity to score, but it kept me humble enough while shooting an 80. The 1st hole stretches out from the clubhouse with water to the right and a beautiful view of the woods that surround the course. After a short par 3
2nd and an awesome lake view behind the 3rd green, you reach the tee box of the dogleg left par 5 4th hole. You have to stay down the right side of the 4th to avoid having a tree blocking your approach shot. The front nine ends with a 498 yard, dogleg right par 5, with a tee shot over water. I was feeling confident and decided to aim my drive over the farthest point of the pond at the tree on the edge. I’m glad I had witnesses, since I hit the drive of the day right at the corner, the ball sailed below the tree’s outstretched limbs and the ball bounced out into the fairway a short 210 yards from the green. The back nine was magnificently
sculptured and was rich with well maintained tee boxes, fairways and greens. The dogleg 14th begs you to take one over the trees, and I wasn’t going to be deterred. A long and high enough drive set up an easy par. I wish the 18th could’ve been so easy. A 488 yard par 5, the 18th has the lake bordering the left hand side of the fairway and a outcropping of marsh and brush that lays in wait for a drive hit a bit too far left. It swallowed my drive, but I stopped the bleeding long enough to sneak away with nothing worse than a bogey. My visit to the newly renovated Club included the festivities and gala of the official grand opening. Members and potential members gathered to see the pomp and circumstance of the unveiling of this beautiful venue. After 18 holes of golf we were treated to a wonderful meal, fireworks, music and dancing. Several of the equity members were proud to discuss the aggressive development plan which includes the completion of a new clubhouse, and enhanced pool, tennis and fitness facilities. I could not have asked for a more enjoyable day and evening. Morin and Westerlund to Play in PGA Tour Events This winter two South Florida PGA Professionals will compete in PGA Tour events. The 2013 Player of the Year and PGA Assistant Golf Professional at The Falls Country Club, Alan Morin will compete in the 2014 Honda Classic at PGA National Resort & Spa on February 27- March 2. Jay Westerlund, winner of the 2013 South Florida PGA Section Championship, will compete in the 2014 Puerto Rico Open Championship presented by seepuertorico.com on March 6-9. Kumar and Pacheco Start 2014 With Win at Sandpiper Golf Club This weekend, the SFPGA Junior Championship Tour presented by The Honda Classic held the first event of 2014 at Sandpiper Golf Club at Club Med in Port St. Lucie. Sixty-four of South Florida’s premier juniors teed it up in the first Championship Tour Event of 2014 and delivered the spectacular play that was expected. 36 holes were not enough to crown a champion in the Girls Overall 13-18 Division. Valeria Sofia Pacheco of Hallandale Beach, and Mary Janiga of Wellington, each shot a 147 two-day total to send the girls division to a playoff. Pacheco was able to secure the win on the second playoff hole and take home her second straight SFPGA Junior Championship Tour win. Janiga would go on to claim first place in the Girls 16-18 division, while Valentia Haupt of Weston, would claim second with a 152 tournament total. Emily Falkner of Palm City, would capture first place in the Girls 13-15 age division, while Dana Williams of Boca Raton, would claim second place with a 162 tournament total. PGA/LPGA Professional Annika Sörenstam, who followed one of the most decorated careers in women’s golf history by becoming a spokesperson for improving the health of the next generation, has been named the recipient of the 2013 PGA First Lady of Golf Award. The PGA First Lady of Golf Award, inaugurated in 1998 and presented biennially since 2011, is bestowed upon a woman who has made significant contributions to the promotion of the game of golf. Sörenstam, 43, was honored at The PGA of America Awards, Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2014, during the 61st PGA Merchandise Show at the Orange County Convention Center’s Chapin Theater in Orlando, Fla. Born in Bro, Sweden, Sörenstam is the first internationally born golfer to be named PGA First Lady of Golf and is the third award recipient with dual PGA of America and LPGA membership, following Renee Powell (2003) and Carol Mann (2008). Sörenstam was elected to PGA membership on April 19, 2013, and is a member of the North Florida PGA Section. “Annika’s impact upon women’s golf in the modern era has been remarkable, setting a standard that may never be touched,” said PGA of America President Ted Bishop. “Her commitment to fitness and excellence made her a legend on the course, but her legacy in the game also includes a sincere dedication to growing a healthy next generation and inspiring future young women through golf. PGA Master Professional John Hughes of Haines City, Fla., who followed a dream to coach and teach, and became both a Section and national education contributor, has been named the recipient of the 2013 Horton Smith Award. Hughes, 50, is the third member of the North Florida PGA Section to receive the Horton Smith Award, which was established in 1965 for outstanding contributions to professional education. The award is named for the late Past PGA President and inaugural Masters Champion. Hughes was honored during The PGA of America Awards during the 61st PGA Merchandise Show at the Orange County Convention Center’s Chapin Theater in Orlando, Fla. “We are blessed with a talented class of national award recipients who have always represented our Association at the highest level,” said PGA of America President Ted Bishop. “They have been natural born leaders and impact-makers in their respective fields. Jacqui Concolino to Represent Mission Inn on LPGA Tour Mission Inn Resort & Club, the iconic Florida golf destination, has signed LPGA Tour professional Jacqui Concolino to an endorsement agreement for the 2014 season. Concolino, who grew up in nearby Orlando, will wear the Mission Inn Resort & Club logo on her hat and shirt crest. She also will make several site appearances at the historic Florida resort where she has played since her junior golf days. “Mission Inn Resort has enjoyed a special connection with Jacqui, which makes her representation of this property on the LPGA Tour particularly rewarding,” said Bud Beucher, owner and general manager at Mission Inn Resort & Club. “She is a solid player and a great person, and we could not be happier to have her be identified with our resort.” This will be Concolino’s third year on the LPGA Tour, coming off a season where she finished 70th on the tour money list. She was a first-team All American at Vanderbilt University in 2007. One More Putt To Go Jack Graham crouched down for what seemed like the 60th time this day to size up his seven footer that would win this championship match play event. They had been out here for hours in this hot broiling sun, battling it out tooth and nail, hole by hole. At the end of regulation on the 18th hole, which was every bit of an hour and three quarters earlier, he had tapped in a short three footer for a par that appeared to be the winning putt. However, his 19 year old opponent, Tommy “Bulldog” Walker somehow drained a twisting, curling 28 footer that tied up the match! Up until that point Jack had correctly gauged the toll on his 58 year old body on this hot muggy day. He made sure he had plenty of water and a few snacks that would restore his physical body and mental frame of mind as they advanced to what they both thought would be their last hole. In contrast, his young competitor with the long flowing back swing and explosive power seemed to have boundless energy and optimism in his game. If “Bulldog” had any weakness at all it was in his putting which, for the most part, was steady but nothing spectacular yet occasionally would rear its ugly, beautiful head. Like way back there on the 15th hole in regulation Tommy had jarred one from 45 feet or more to tie up the match for the first, or was it the second time? Jack knew that the youngster thought he would be able to go one up on the long 580 yard par five 16th hole, especially when he went for the green in two after a thunderous drive. However, his five wood effort found its way into the huge right bunker to the right of the large green. For his part Jack, the “ole veteran” as he liked to call him-
self, played the hole the way it was meant to be played. He knew he couldn’t match “Ole Bulldogs” power so Jack hit a safe, smooth drive and a comfortable three wood that left him with a respectable 130 yard, nine iron into the fast green with the flag in the back. (Heck, Jack thought, they’re all fast when you realize that the mid-day heat had sucked all the moisture out of the air and greens.) So it wasn’t too surprising they both managed to halve the hole when Tommy came up short out of the bunker and two putted while Jack flipped his nine iron safely onto the huge green and also two putted for his five. After halving the par three 17th they moved onto the 18th hole and you know what happened there. So on they went into “sudden death” and by now they were into their third playoff hole as each player became more aware and more careful on every shot. Sure the 17th was a relatively short 153 yard par three but again the green was like glass with double breaks to the hole from a variety of positions and a variety of undulations on the tricky surface. Also, the green was a little small resting on a plateau with the land sloping away from front to back. As a result only part of the flag could be seen from the tee. Suddenly it seemed a little more challenging than the previous trials. Jack had played the course many times in the past and knew from experience that this was the kind of hole that could jump up and bite you and it could make or break open a match instantly. Jack also knew what he had to do but as soon as his six iron shot left the club he realized he might be in trouble. His ball drifted slightly left off line of the flag, hit the very front edge of the green, and drifted out of sight. Jack figured from

experience that his shot was going to wind up just on the edge of the playing surface or would be just slightly off the green leaving him with a tricky, side hill putt of about 25 feet. Tommy decided on a seven iron and went straight towards the pin but a pinch of wind suddenly came up and caught his ball, causing it to come up slightly short of his calculation. His ball hit the ground just in front of the green, jumped forward in the air, but then hit the front edge of the green and trickled out of sight. Jack figured that Tommy would have a deceptive, exceedingly quick, down hill putt. When both players arrived at the 17th green the scene was exactly as Jack had mentally predicted. His ball was resting on the fringe just off the left side of the green leaving him with a down hill curving putt of about 25 feet. Tommy’s ball had come up short on the top edge of the green leaving him with about a 40 footer coming down the hill. Each player certainly had no bargain. Since Tommy was away he made a nice firm stroke but in his desire to make it for the win his ball rolled about 14 feet past, leaving him with a frightful, uphill, slight breaking comebacker. For his part Jack’s tired legs told him he needed to get his ball close for a tap in putt which would put pressure on the kid that just wouldn’t go away. He sized up his side hill approach putt that would surely break seven to eight feet to the left and hopefully settle near the hole or even go in! But for some unknown reason, that only golfers know, the ole veteran known as Jack Graham babied a delicate putt that just traveled about 18 feet and left him with a seven footer for a par. Jack found himself staring at possibly the one final putt that could win the match but it still had that break that only Bernard Langer could love! Now Tommy, “the Bulldog”, took two or three long looks at this uphill thirteen footer with the slight left to right break that would lead his ball into the hole. Over his short life he had made a ton of these and so when he rolled his ball firmly up the hill he had no doubts that he had made the putt. The ball rolled up as planned and took the turn that Tommy had played for and headed straight for the hole! Suddenly, for no apparent reason, the ball abruptly stopped less than a half inch from the lower right edge part of the hole and wound up at rest two inches directly in front of the hole. For several seconds Tommy stared in disbelief at the ball and then finally looked over at Jack and got the signal to pick up his ball for a bogey four. Now, it was Jack’s turn to close out this match once and for all and he began to take his position in back of the ball to begin his pre-shot routine. He felt a small wave of fatigue beginning to set in so he stopped to re-group and began his ritual all over again. Before doing so he took a final sip of cool water that seemed to rejuvenate him a little. Even though it was late in the match now there were no shadows, and no distractions, for that matter. It was just one more putt to go and although it was a tough one if Jack made the par the match would be over and he would be a winner again. Now, if you’ve come this far in the story I’m sure that you have formed an opinion about who might be the better player or maybe you even established in your mind the player whom you would like to win, or even deserved to win. So, in all fairness to you I will leave it for you to decide if Jack made his putt and added another piece of hardware to his mantle. BUT perhaps you believe that he missed the hole completely, or possibly lipped out, which would also give him a bogey four and force the match to continue. Possibly Jack would lose it to the cocky nineteen year old on the next hole coming up. Therefore, my friend, I’ll leave it for you to decide because only you know how old you are, and know the amount of your own golfing experiences, or even consciously or sub-consciously picking the player you want to win this match play marathon. RGAA reminds us that GOLF is meant to be FUN! The new Recreational Golf Association of America (www.RGAA.org) wants to remind golfers that GOLF is meant to be FUN! What is Recreational Golf? “Recreational Golf” is the game of golf that has been played with friends and has evolved over hundreds of years to what it is today - it is how most rounds of golf are played today in the USA by more than 20 million golfers. Recreational Golf is not to be confused with “Serious Tournament Golf”, which is governed by the USGA Rules of Golf and is only played by the most accomplished 2-3 million golfers. Recreational Golf is a game; the primary objective being to have fun and the secondary objective being to propel a small/hard ball with the use of various clubs into each hole, progressing through the holes in numerical order with as few
strokes as possible. The game is further characterized by the participants agreeing on the exact details of the rules on the first tee, with Mulligans, Gimme Putts and Winter Rules being accepted elements of the game. The highest authority in Recreational Golf is the group playing the game! The Recreational Golf Association of America (RGAA) is a not-for-profit organization serving the needs of recreational golfers, golf courses and golf companies. The RGAA will work to grow recreational golf awareness and participation. It will also develop and maintain the RGAA Rules of Golf, and will work to incorporate a handicap system into that is compatible with the current USGA handicap system with regards to recreational golf (we will accept USGA type handicaps in RGAA sanctioned events). The RGAA will work to establish respect and acceptance

for RGAA Rules in charity tournaments and other recreational golf venues. RGAA Mission The RGAA exists to help grow recreational golf and serve the needs of recreational golfers and the recreational golf community. We will champion efforts that are in the best interests of those who engage in and benefit from recreational golf play.
ETIQUETTE & RULES Etiquette of the Game The Game of Golf is an ancient sport with rich history and traditions. Golf should be fun! Unlike most sports the player is ultimately responsible for his or her own behavior, following the Rules and showing consideration for other players. Deviating from these traditions is discouraged. The Rules of Golf were originally created in 1744 in Scotland by the Honorable Company of Edinburgh Golfers. Over the years the original 13 Rules have been amended continuously and today the USGA has 35 sometimes confusing Rules of Golf that are appropriate for organized competitions for skilled players. The Recreational Golf Association of America has created 13 simple Rules of Golf designed to make the game more fun and less intimidating for recreational golfers. These Rules are a direct reflection of how the majority of golfers play the game in the United States. A round of golf should be completed in approximately four hours. Players should be aware of their position on the course at all times and should attempt to keep up with the group in front of them. Letting faster players play through is a recommended courtesy. Players are encouraged to use the most forward tees to speed up play. Golfers are encouraged to play “ready golf.” Whoever is ready to hit should hit. Putt out; don’t mark once you’ve started putting. Players should be careful that no one is standing close or in a position to be hit by the club or a ball. If a player hits a ball that may hit another
player it is customary to shout “fore” in the direction of the player. Players are encouraged to show respect for their fellow players and not cause distractions (talking, rattling clubs, etc.) that will disturb them. On the putting green players should not step or stand on another player’s line to the hole. Players are encouraged to fix ball marks on the putting green; their own as well as those of other players. Replace divots in the fairway or fill with sand. After hitting a shot from a bunker the player should carefully rake the sand and smooth it for other players. Players may enlist the aid of a caddie to help them with their equipment or raking bunkers.
RGAA Rules of Golf 1. The Game of Golf consists of hitting a ball with a club around a golf course. The ball should be struck with a club, not pushed, scraped, lifted, thrown or spooned. A “round” consists of any number of consecutive holes on a golf course. Each time a player strikes the ball it is called a “stroke.” The sum of all strokes in a round equals the golfer’s score. A hole starts with a stroke from the teeing ground and ends on the green when the ball is holed. 2. The Rules of Play are to be agreed upon in advance by the players before teeing off on the first hole. The highest authority for settling disputes is the foursome or player’s group. They may ultimately decide what is right under all circumstances. Players may agree to add, waive or amend any Rule. If there is a dispute not covered by the Rules, then the golfers in the group will determine how to resolve the dispute; the decision should be made in accordance with what is fair. The players may appoint a ruling committee for the purpose of settling issues during group or tournament play. Advice may be sought or offered during the course of play but responding to a request is at the discretion of the golfers in the group. 3. Medal play consists of a round of consecutive holes when all strokes are counted. In Medal play the player must count every shot in a round and may not “pick up” after a shot. In Stroke play all members of the group are “fellow players.” A “side” is a player or two or more players who are partners. In match play the member/s of the opposing side is/are and “opponent.” Match play consists of a game when the players play each hole individually or with a partner against another individual or an individual and his partner. A Match can be played for any consecutive number of holes until a winner is established. A match can also be played as

a Nassau when the match is divided into a first nine, second nine and an overall match. Each hole has a winner/loser or a tie score. Players may pick up after their ball no longer counts on a particular hole. Rules for Match and Medal play are the same regarding penalties. In case of a tie it is suggested that additional holes should be played until a winner is determined. The player’s may play in any order they choose. In competitions, the player/side with the lowest score on the previous hole tees first. There is no penalty for playing out of turn. 4. Any commercially available balls and clubs are deemed acceptable for play. A player is allowed to carry a maximum of 15/20 clubs? Penalty for exceeding the limit is one stroke. Clubs may not be altered during the course of play but broken or damaged clubs may be replaced at any time during the round. A player claiming a handicap or average score should play with the equipment used to establish the handicap. 5. It is allowable for a player to switch balls at the beginning of each hole during a round; this includes switching the brand, model and number of the ball. Unless a ball is lost during the play of a hole, the player should finish the hole with the ball that was in play at the start of the hole. If a ball is lost during the play of the hole it should be replaced with a ball that is similar to the one that was used to start the hole. The ball may be lifted, cleaned and placed without penalty at any time. 6. If the wrong ball is played the shot/s should be replayed from their original position/s. There is no penalty for hitting the wrong ball. 7. If a ball is lost a player has two (2) minutes to find it. The penalty for spending more than two (2) minutes searching for a ball is one stroke. The penalty for spending additional time beyond four minutes is one additional stroke 8. If the ball is in a “non-standard” condition for the location, it is acceptable to improve the position or lie of the ball one club length except on the putting green. Such “non-standard” conditions include divots, bare or uneven turf, temporary water, cart paths, sprinkler heads or hoses and unraked sand in a hazard. The ball may be lifted and placed one club length but not closer to the hole. When improving a player’s lie the lie should not be moved from the rough to the fairway, from the fringe to the green or out of a bunker to the rough or fairway. 9. The flagstick does not need to be removed unless it is requested by the player who is chipping or putting. If a ball hits the flagstick and it is not holed there is no penalty. If the ball comes to rest against the flagstick it is considered holed. 10. A ball in motion should not be deliberately deflected or stopped by the other golfers in the group or their equipment. Penalty for violation is one stroke. A ball on the putting green that may assist or interfere with a shot should be marked and lifted. 11. If a ball comes to rest out of bounds, in a water hazard or lateral hazard, the ball should be placed as near as possible to where it went out of bounds or entered the hazard and not closer to the hole. The golfer also has the option to replay the shot or use a designated “drop area”. The penalty is one stroke. 12. Movable objects may be moved if they interfere with a swing or the player’s line of sight. A player is entitled to move the object without penalty. A player is entitled to move the ball one club length to get relief from immovable unnatural objects (telephone poles, fences, drain pipes, maintenance equipment, etc.) No penalty. 13. A golfer may deem his ball unplayable and may place the ball near where the ball is deemed unplayable. If it is unplayable in a bunker it must be dropped in the bunker. Canada’s Brooke Henderson and Italy’s Renato Paratore fulfilled their maximum ambitions for the week, newly crowned Junior Orange Bowl champions. Henderson posted a final round 67, a four-day total of 280, 4-under par. The Canadian Ladies Amateur champion, 9th in world amateur rankings, put together a dominant performance, almost as if during the first three days she’d been in test mode. “It’s an awesome feeling,” she said with a huge smile. “I came here with this in mind and I’m really pleased. Today I was finally able to get my putting working, compared to the first three days. I felt very comfortable on the greens all day.” The 16-year old from Smith Falls, Ontario, birdied four of her first six holes, setting the tone of the day. Consecutive bogeys at 8 and 9 allowed playing-partner Sweden’s Strom to draw within three strokes at the turn, but that was as close as it 64

Coming Full Circle with the FSGA During his first two years of high school Randy Briggs realized that his friends and classmates were getting bigger in height and weight. Briggs wasn’t catching up to them. There were many days during his teenage years that Briggs would spend at his grandparent’s house. Located very close to Ocala Golf Club, Briggs wandered over to the municipal course located on Silver Springs Blvd numerous times. “I actually started to play golf more out of default as oppose to picking golf out of a smorgasbord of sports,” said Briggs. Not being big enough to play basketball and football actually proved to have its advantages. During his senior year of high school the Florida State Golf Association awarded Briggs a scholarship which he used to attend the University of Florida. Today Briggs is the president of the Florida State Golf Association. Holding the title of president brings everything full circle for the fifth generation Ocala resident. “The Florida State Golf Association was founded by a group of men, one of which was from Ocala and became the FSGA’s first president, Clarence Camp,” said Briggs. “The most prestigious amateur tournament is the state is the Florida State Amateur. That trophy has always been the Clarence Camp State Amateur trophy. Clarence’s brother, Henry Camp, which the (annual Ocala) Camp Tournament is named after, was the president of the FSGA in 1950. Ironically it comes back to Ocala me being an Ocala native which is kind of special.” Since 1975 Briggs has practiced law. He was the first Ocala lawyer selected for listing in Florida’s Super Lawyers for plaintiff’s attorneys. Of the 93,000 lawyers in Florida, no lawyer has been board certified in civil trial law longer than Briggs and he is one of only 155 to have held that certification for 30 years. Since 2002 Briggs has had an integral role in the decision making of the FSGA first as a board member from 2002 to 2005 then as a member of its executive committee from 2006 to 2013. “Randy’s biggest attribute, his sound business and legal mind, has made a defining impact.” said FSGA executive 66

One of the things that have made the FSGA so successful over the last decade is having people like Briggs, with diverse and extensive corporate experience, on the FSGA board and executive committee. In the last 10 years the board has been very active. Incorporating the Florida State Women’s Golf Association into the FSGA, starting and developing the Florida Junior Tour and developing one-day championships were just some of the efforts of the FSGA. The FSGA is the largest golf association in the world next to the USGA. It is bigger than California, Texas and
New York with 210.000 members, over 800 clubs and 450 competition rounds of golf a year. A 30-member board, the smaller executive committee, 17 very competent and effective paid FSGA staff members along with over 500 volunteers is why the FSGA has been so successful. Briggs has a little game in him too. He is a three time state champion, capturing the 1996 Four-Ball Championship, the 2006 & 2010 Senior Four-Ball Championship along with the countless titles and championship he has won over the years playing in Marion County Golf Association tournaments. Chris Holmes Names of of Top 50 Junior Instructors by US Kids Golf Chris Holmes, Director of Instruction at the Heathrow Country Club, has been recognized by the US Kids Golf Foundation as one of the Top 50 Junior Instructors in the country. According to Dan Van Horn, President of US Kids Golf Foundation, “This year’s applicant pool of nearly 750 candidates was the largest and strongest ever.” Van Horn went on to say that
Holmes selection was based on…”his outstanding commitment to youth golf, the impact his Kids Golf Program has had on students, and the esteem in which he is held by his professional peers.” Holmes is a Class A British P.G.A. Professional. Having competed at the highest level for many years, he turned his focus to teaching golf in 1986. Holmes joined the Heathrow Country Club as Director of Instruction in 1998 and has developed an Award Winning Kids Golf Instructional Program. Over the years he has helped many junior golfers realize their golfing potential.
Some of his students have gone on to win Amateur Junior Golf Association (AJGA) events and high school state golf championships. Many of his students have also received full university golf scholarships. “We are so proud of Chris in being selected as one of the Top 50 Junior Instructors in the Country”, said Nate Kalb, Director of Operations for Heathrow Country Club. “He and his team have developed a first-class kids golf program here at Heathrow and we congratulate him on this well deserved national recognition.”
Doug Cullen Makes 22nd Hole-In-One In 2001 Doug Cullen made his 13th hole-in-one. Today, 13 years later he made his 22nd hole-in-one on January 17th at Stoneybrook Golf Club. Renowned PGA Professional Craig Harmon to Offer Private Lessons at the Seagate Country Club in Delray Beach On the heels of a multi-million dollar golf course renovation, The Seagate Country Club in Delray Beach, Florida, has recruited internationally renowned PGA professional Craig Harmon as the new Director of Instruction. A living legend with a lineage to match, Harmon is available for private and group lessons for

This year’s list was selected by the nearly 12,500 teachers from 50 states who fill out an online ballot, ranking their peers on a grade-point scale from one to 10. Brian Mogg, named as director of instruction at the Waldorf Astoria Golf Academy in 2011, has been providing golf
instruction at the highest level since 1993 and was recognized as a Golf Magazine Top 100 Golf Instructor since 2004. Brian joined the David Leadbetter Academy in 1993 and eventually became the Director of Instruction from 1997-2001. In 2002, he opened the Brian Mogg Performance Center focusing on developing the golfers’ swing and all aspects of their short game. Brian frequently guests on The Golf Channel’s “Academy Live,” “Your Game Night,” and other network shows. He has written instructional articles for Golf Illustrated, Golf Tips Magazine and PGA Tour Partners magazine as well as been featured in Sports Illustrated. He also hosts corporate outings and clinics for many companies throughout North America. Brian resides
in Orlando with his wife and four kids. Brian leads the Waldorf Astoria Golf Academy, which offers a range of private and group golf packages.
