Stetson named Best for Veterans DELAND, Fla.,– When it comes to veterans seeking a business degree, Stetson University is a perfect fit, according to Military Times, which named Stetson’s School of Business Administration a “Best for Vets: Business Schools” in its annual 2014 rankings. Military Times named Stetson University as the 46th best school in the nation for veterans to attend. Overall, schools were evaluated in five categories: university culture, student support, academic outcomes and quality, academic policies, and cost and financial aid. The value of each section was comparable, but university culture and student support counted the most, and financial aid counted the least. Stetson prides itself on creating an environment suitable to veterans while offering many different resources to aid in them in success. Stetson has committed $800,000 to offset the cost of education to a limited number of military veterans across all of the university’s full-time and part-time undergraduate and graduate programs as part of its participation in the GI Bill’s Yellow Ribbon Program. In addition to being named a Best for Vets school, Stetson also has been recognized as a “Military Friendly School” the past two years. This designation is given to colleges, universities, and trade schools in the country that are doing the most to embrace America’s military service members, veterans, and spouses as students and ensure their success on campus. The rankings are published in full in Military Times’ EDGE magazine and online at MilitaryTimes.com. For more information regarding admission to Stetson University please contact Stetson Admissions via phone (386-822-7100) or Stetson’s website.

Florida Tourism Celebrated at the State Capitol - The Partnership for Florida’s Tourism Held Annual Tourism Day in Tallahassee Hundreds of tourism and hospitality representatives from across the state came to the Florida Capitol on March 12th for a daylong event designed to educate the legislature, media and Floridians about the importance of Florida’s number one industry. According to preliminary estimates, 94.7 million visitors came to Florida in 2013, making it a record year for visitation to Florida and exceeding the previous high of 91.5 million in 2012. “The millions upon millions of visitors that take advantage of world-class hotels, restaurants and attractions here in the Sunshine State give billions of dollars back to our state’s economy,” said Carol Dover, President and CEO of the Florida Restaurant and Lodging Association. “Tourism Day gave us an opportunity to talk one-on-one with legislators about the pro-business and pro-job initiatives that keep Floridians employed and national and international visitors coming to the Sunshine State. With support from the Florida Legislature and Governor Rick Scott we aim to reach our goal of bringing 100 million visitors to Florida in 2014.” Governor Rick Scott kicked off Florida Tourism Day events at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel, highlighting his commitment to the allocation of $100 million to bring in 100 million visitors to our state. Other state leaders also spoke to showcase the importance of the industry including: Lieutenant Governor Carlos Lopez-Cantera, Agriculture and Consumer Services Commissioner Adam Putnam, Department of Business and Professional Regulation Secretary Ken Lawson, Secretary of State Ken Detzner, Senator Joseph Abruzzo (D-Royal Palm Beach), Representative Jim Boyd (RBradenton) and Representative Jimmy Patronis (R-Panama City). The street party at night, which drew well over 400 attendees, featured the band Low Flying Planes and guests enjoyed food, prizes and exhibits from numerous members of the tourism industry and supporting organizations. The Partnership for Florida’s Tourism, which is a coalition of several statewide associations, hosted the festivities as its members from across the state met with legislators throughout the day to ensure tourism, hospitality, and marketing programs are fully funded. 10

How’s life going for one of the worlds most talented and international golf instructors? Pretty content these days doing what I love what I do – Golf teaching is rewarding. Meanwhile, my artistic outlet, singing opera, is rolling along/has some traction.

You seem to be an international golf pro, where can I get a lesson? While I give clinics for professional associations

around-the world (at places like the PGA of Sweden and Turnberry, Scotland) my teaching base is the beautiful Resort at Longboat Key Club, a great place to come for a golf vacation. You can also golf and travel the world with me on Crystal Cruises, the world’s #1 rated luxury ship for seminars and playing clinics at prestigious and exotic golf clubs from Italy to Australia.

You also trained as a classical singer? I trained classically 10 years ago, and just picked it up recently… then totally unexpected, I landed the lead baritone role for a New York City production of La Traviata.

How’s that coming along? It’s exciting and interesting to be

a student; being on the other side of the equation helps you understand and empathize more with novice golfers.

What are your favorite things to do? Fitness and Outdoor Ac-

tivities. Exploring and Learning. Cooking for family & friends. Going to Theatre, Opera, Dance…and of course, golf!

12

A Favorite Charity you support? The Community Word Project that brings the arts to the youth of underserved communities. Check them out---

How’s your golf studio on the 39th floor of the Skyhouse in NYC? There’s a great view, and it’s convenient for training

and lessons. I’ve always been a big believer in mastering swing motions & strokes, and some indoor practice really focuses a player on what club & body are doing…and if you add some technology—you’ll know even more than where the ball goes!

What three people would you most like to play with in your fantasy golf foursome? Thomas Jefferson, Charlie Rose, Che Guevara, Christopher Hitchens. I’d caddy!

Name the three most important things to you in the world? My family, friends, and a healthy outdoor lifestyle

You’re based in Florida? I teach at the Resort at Longboat Key

Club…it’s hard to beat the combination of great golf, beautiful beaches and culture.

Ok bachelor, describe your ideal woman? Active, free-thinker

with traditional values, who’s open to life’s experiences. I’d love to share my life with someone who likes to travel, sports and appreciates the arts. I’m a bit of a dichotomy…I much prefer a philosophical discussion to an accounting of one’s ‘last round’ Florida Golf Central • Volume 15, Issue 1

Where did you grow up?

cart header girl

I grew up in a small town called Jamestown located in Western New York.

What is your favorite sport to play? To watch? Growing up

I played tennis and was on the track team through out high school. I enjoy watching golf with my family including my grandparents and mother and I also occasionally watch football... (Go Bills)!

Do you enjoy playing golf? Are they're any golfers in your family? I have only played a couple times but when I did I had a wonderful time. Yes, my whole family has a deep passion for golf especially my mother. In the winter time when she can't golf outdoors she will practice in our living room and anywhere else she possibly can.

What do you feel makes this club special? Out of all the places I have worked, Rio Pinar has by far been my favorite. All of the employees and patrons who come to play are such caring and genuine people. The scenery at Rio Pinar is beautiful in so many ways and is one of the reasons why I enjoy my job so much. And of course you can't forget our one of a kind Fox Squirrels they are so friendly and cute!

What is the funniest thing you have ever seen on the golf course? It's more embarrassing to me than funny since

it happened to me. It was one of my first days working and I remember I was waiting behind the trees for these two gentlemen to tee off. And all of a sudden they waved me over and I got so excited that I ran into a tree! I couldn't believe I did that I felt so embarrassed and everyone that saw was cracking up.

Sasha Kurashiga

What type of music do you prefer? I never cared

for country music, but ever since I moved down south I have found myself loving it!

What hobbies do you enjoy? Staying active has always been

important to me so I love working out and going for long runs. I also enjoy cooking and baking.

Relaxed evening at home or nightclub and cocktails? I always

love curling up in bed and watching good movies. However if I had to decide at the moment I would pick a night out since it is my birthday this weekend.

Favorite Comedian? Jeff Dunham for sure, he always makes me laugh!

Favorite type of movie? I like any action movie that will have me sitting on the edge of my seat.

Favorite charity to support? Toys for Tots What else would you like for us to know about you? A quote

that I always like to go by is actually something Arnold Palmer once said, "Success depends less on strength of body than upon strength of mind and character". 14

A Shoe In Sometimes a product comes along that simply changes the way we do things, changes what we wear or changes our standards. Golf has been full of amazing innovations, especially in the last 20 years. Unfortunately, golf shoes, apart from some clever new features, have remained very similar in design and materials. I personally wear a fairly traditional shoe nearly identical to what I wore 10 years ago. Two years ago, Rick Buchanan, a 15 year success story from the fashion industry, ap-

plied a completely different approach to golf shoe design. The Biion Shoe that resulted from this effort is a truly unique and high performance golf shoe. Of course his fashion background was influential in the design, look and feel of the shoes. Since they are made from EVA, they are insanely light and comfortable as well. But the brilliance was in an amazing combination of fit, comfort and style that makes them feel equally amazing when playing golf or hanging out at the 19th hole. Rick’s next obvious concern was performance. The result of that quest was nothing short of magic. The Biion Shoes are a clearly better option to 16

traditional golf shoes. The fact is that nothing feels quite like a Biion shoe. Nothing fits like it or performs like it either. Another unique difference is that Rick actually wanted to build a lifestyle shoe, and not just a golf shoe. While never compromising performance, he wanted to develop something so comfortable that you would want to wear them everywhere, on and off the coarse as well. It is undeniably the most versatile golf shoe on the market. Rick Buchanan, president of Biion Footwear, comments: “The reaction and enthusiasm over the shoes has been overwhelming. For every person that just loves the styles, there is someone who is in love with the fit and how light they are. It is all happening very fast. Apart from the US markets, we’ve opened distribution in Italy, Spain, Finland and New Zealand out of the gate with another 10 countries in negotiation over next 90 days. It seems retailers are very quick to grasp the concept and see its potential. As a designer, I am very proud of the Biion shoe line. But the great reward is coming from the response of golfers who absolutely love them. Because they are light, easy to clean, waterproof and feel great on your feet, they are the perfect shoe for avid golfers or pros who are in their golf shoes every day.” Rick’s Background has been well

By Michael Wargo rounded in a retail, sports and fashion sales agency, distribution and now finally his own brand. He has had a successful fashion sales agency for over 12 years now, but he has lived and breathed Biion for several years getting them designed and into production. He was a golf enthusiast since he was 8 years old, with his own make-shift par 3 in his yard. Later, he got a bit more serious and became very passionate about the game, and this passion gave Biion the spark it needed during the evolution of its design. They are an EVA shoe. Ehtylene Vinyl Acetate (EVA) is comfortable, waterproof, shock absorbent, washable, anti-microbial and odor-resistant. It’s also the material that helps make Biion Shoes the lightest performance golf shoes around. The shock-absorbent dual-density midsole ensures your feet stay comfortable before, during, and after a round as well. It also adds stability to your swing. The iconic spikeless ‘honeycomb’ pattern cleat increases grip; giving you improved control through your entire swing. Performance and comfort aside, golfers are going to love the Biion style and selection. Wingtips, saddles and bright color options all but guarantee you will find something that suits your personal sense of style. Rick adds, “ I have surrounded myself with an amazing group of colleagues and investors from conception to execution to ensure a quality product and brand. I am working with some of the best people I could have ever imagined, and am certain none of this would have been possible without them. My goal goes beyond corporate profitability, and is as simple as going to the course and seeing regular golfers wearing them because they love them. At this point I am so privileged to have our shoes in pro shops of some of the most prestigious courses in the world. That is really a great reward for me, but stay tuned… We are just getting started; our new models and colors will knock your socks off.” Florida Golf Central • Volume 15, Issue 1

improving performance

By Michael Wargo

Training aids are generally targeted to fix a specific problem or to help golfers get the feel for a specific element in the golf swing. But early last year, an avid golfer and inventor, John Dandrea took the concept of the training aid to the next level. How about one training aid with the ability to do the job of many? When John invented the Simple Solutions training aid, he developed a product that focuses primarily on the proper angles of the wrist, hands and elbows. But it moves way beyond that, and forces the arms and hands into the proper position for the backswing, downswing and other proper motions simultaneously. While using the Simple Solution, it takes the most critical elements needed for solid contact and put everything right into the perfect position for solid impact. John Dandrea, President of Simple Golfing Solutions, comments, “A good golf swing features proper mechanics to generate solid contact every time. It would take several gizmos

22

to help with wrist action, takeaway, downswing, elbow position, shoulder turn, weight shift, etc. I took a completely targeted approach focusing on one element that is key to many swing issues. By creating something that allows you to feel the proper hand and wrist action, it automatically solves many other swing flaws.” The Simple Solution training aid allows the proper angles of the hands, wrist, elbow and most of all the clubface to be held throughout the entire swing. John also adds, “The device really is quite simple. By keeping the arc up against your lead forearm, it makes it virtually impossible to cup your wrist or bow it. Then, throughout your backswing, when your hands and arms are perfect through this stage, your are in the right spot at the top. The same goes for the downswing. When you start from the right place, everything in the downswing just falls right into the “Slot”. The result: Solid impact.” The ultimate goal for the Simple Solution was to create a device that allows you to feel and practice the proper technique so you can reprogram your muscle memory and lower your scores. It promotes the proper takeaway, backswing, downswing and impact. It is easy to install on any club, and its affordability makes this training aid a must for golfers of every level. It seems to make sense that if you can find a way to put the body in the right spot in a few key places, physics takes over and does the rest. While testing this product, I personally noticed it was amazing for solving short game problems. In my opinion, the biggest short game issue is

to avoid flipping and keeping hands forward through the chip. Although John said he did not set out to improve the short game, the Simple Solution creates the perfect chipping motion. Your hands will be ahead of the ball and the leading edge of the clubface will strike down on the ball eliminating any scooping motion. It is virtually impossible to flip. John’s concept and the Simple Solution is really just the beginning. I think he is on to something. There really are a few key elements that are absolutely essential to the golf swing and putting stroke. If you look at classic great golf swings and unusual swings on tour throughout the years, you will see nearly all end up looking identical in some key areas. And of course, all have a very solid impact position. He has targeted the four critical focal points able to produce a reliable repeatable golf swing and putting stroke. I agree with the fact that if I grabbed a training aid for every problem, I would have to buy too many to count. The Simple Solutions approach makes a lot of sense and can potentially make it a lot easier to develop a very reliable and repeatable golf swing. John also remarked, “Simple Solutions is a mission and not just a name. I have several new ideas in development designed with the same simple concept. I am very excited to complete development and bring the complete simple solutions line to the golf market. For now, our Simple Solution seems to be very successful, and judging by the response we are getting from golfers and teachers, we are definitely doing something right.” Florida Golf Central • Volume 15, Issue 1

Personal Golf Fan – A “Cool” Dream Come True Inventor and entrepreneur, Cynthia Wark leaves flying the friendly skies for a new venture on ground level. As a flight attendant veteran, now airbourne only twice a year, Cynthia relishes in a good round of golf, mostly for pleasure but often. In the spring of 2009, waiting to tee off, the weather was already extremely warm. If it’s like this now, summer is going to be brutal Wark thought. Cynthia visualized a fan blowing on her as she rested her swing. Inspired by Oprah’s numerous segments on woman inventors and reinventing their careers after 50; Cynthia Wark, with the help and support of her husband, set out to create the ultimate golf fan that would keep players cool during the hot months. After three years of waiting for the patent to go through, Personal Gol Fan launched in 2012 and went on to win The Inventors Spotlight Pinnacle Award at the PGA Show in January 2013. The Personal Golf Fan was one of only a couple others when Cynthia got the idea. The other fans were not portable or pre-installed. To be “country club” 26

appealing or golf course etiquette the fan was designed to be easy on the eye, not bounce out of cart as well as keep you cool. The Personal Golf Fan has become the “it” golf cart accessory on the course these days, often selling out since it’s June 19th launch on-line, where it’s currently sold. Patented, this portable fan has high quality components. The motor is brushless, ball bearing and good for about 10,000 hours. The rechargeable lithium-ion battery is lasts for about 2,000 charges. The fan blade has winglets (like an airplane) which helps increase airflow. It runs continuous on the low/ normal speed for 6 1/2 hours and high 3 hours and 45 minutes and charges in less than three hours. Personal Golf Fan comes with a wall charger; a water resistant carry bag and quick cover raincoat, two-cup adapters, two polymer rings and easily

fits five different golf cart models. With the success of Personal Golf Fan you can be assured Cynthia has already put her creativity and resources in motion for future products. Personal Golf Fan retails for $199.00. www.personalgolffan.com.

The ANNIKA Academy: Helping Junior Golfers of All Skill Levels Annika Sorenstam – the most dominant player in the history of women’s golf – stepped away from the LPGA while at the top of her sport in 2008. Since then she hasn’t looked back, turning her attention to a diverse array of projects including the Orlando-based ANNIKA Academy (theannikaacademy.com). In recent years, the Academy’s ELITE Training Program and summer camp sessions have made it a hotbed for junior golfers seeking to improve their games. The ELITE Training Program is specifically designed to help aspiring golfers achieve their goals on the course, in the classroom and in life. ELITE Athletes receive golf, fitness and nutrition coaching that showcases Annika’s “Winning Approach” philosophy, and teaches them how to apply it to attain competitive success. Some ELITE Athletes attending college or recently accepting scholarship offers are: • Shannon Aubert, a high school senior coached by ANNIKA Academy Director of Golf Instruction Henri Reis for several years, will play for Stanford University this fall 28

• Samantha Wagner, a high school junior and three-time AJGA Rolex All-American, has made a verbal commitment to the University of Florida • Simin Feng, a former ELITE Athlete and graduate of Orlando’s Windermere Prep, is currently a freshman at Vanderbilt University and finished second on the team with a tournament stroke average of 72.2 “The ELITE Program is about more than just golf,” says Annika, who personally shares her “Your 59” mental training and visualization strategies with students. “Swing-specific fitness regimens, top-tier educational opportunities and safe, comfortable housing are integral to the ELITE experience.” Led by LPGA winner and 1993 NCAA Champion, Charlotta Sorenstam, and

Reis, Annika’s only swing coach since she was 10 years old, the ELITE Training Program’s level of instruction is unmatched. “Students receive top-notch, personalized coaching at our state-of-the-art Reunion Resort facility,” says David Allibone, Athlete Recruiter for the ELITE Training Program. “Henri, Charlotta, fitness expert Kai Fusser and 15-year instruction veteran Mark Bereza are a tight-knit team dedicated to improving lives on and off the course.” The Academy’s fun, supportive instruction environment is just as evident during its summer camp offerings. Four week-long sessions are scheduled this year: June 16-20, June 23-27, July 7-11 and July 28-August 1. All will be led by Annika’s hand-picked team. As an added bonus, the June 23-27 session will include a special lunch, clinic, photo and autograph session with Annika. “Our camps continue to grow in popularity, allowing us to inspire more recreational and competitive junior golfers with each passing year,” says Mike Pryor, the ANNIKA Academy’s Florida Golf Central • Volume 15, Issue 1

Director of Golf. “Join us this summer to improve your game in a fun, supportive environment that’s unmatched by any other golf academy.” To ensure instruction is tailored to campers’ skill sets, they will be separated into Advanced (12 handicap or lower) and Intermediate groups. Both will offer full-swing and short-game coaching, a rules and etiquette seminar, on-course instruction, exercise tips and closing

awards ceremony. The Advanced program will also feature video swing analysis, club checkups in the Callaway Performance Center,

Golf Legend Gary Player Leads Star Athlete Roster in Fight Against Inactivity, Obesity PHIT America – the non-profit education and advocacy organization designed to combat the nation’s inactivity and obesity crisis – announces Gary Player, one of the greatest players in golf history, as a celebrity ambassador. Winner of 165 tournaments, including nine Major Championships, Player achieved legendary status as one of only five golfers in history to claim a career Grand Slam winning the Masters Tournament (1961, 1974, 1978), U.S. Open (1965), The Open Championship (1959, 1968, 1974) and PGA Championship (1962, 1972). Additionally, Player is the only golfer in history to achieve the Grand Slam on the Senior Tour. He credits his success on the course to the stringent exercise regimen maintained throughout his career. “At age 78, I still complete a rigorous fitness routine, which includes 1,000 sit-ups daily,” says Player. “My greatest ambition is to spread the message to the youth of the world that your body is a temple – you cannot do anything without health.” As a father of six and grandfather of 22, Player’s desire to instill the importance of an active lifestyle, especially in children, aligns with the message of PHIT America. Participation in youth sports is a way to get fit while also building self-confidence and developing skills such as discipline and dedication to setting and achieving goals. Player joins an all-star roster of celebrity ambassadors including NFL icon Herschel Walker and Golf Channel in30

structor Michael Breed. Each PHIT America ambassador is selected due to a common vision. The collective goal is to create “A Movement for a Fit and Healthy America” by educating men, women and children about the importance of an active lifestyle to improve overall health. “Almost 30 percent of Americans are totally sedenGary Player tary and this has increased the last five years,” says Jim Baugh, Founder of PHIT America, former President of Wilson Sporting Goods and a 2011 inductee into the Sporting Goods Industry Hall of Fame. “Inactivity is the prime contributor to the escalating health care costs we all face and Gary Player is setting a great example of how we can all work to create a more fit country.” Since its January 2013 launch, more than 150 leading companies and associations from the sports, fitness, retail and media industries have contributed funds and services to support PHIT America.

The organization supports two pieces of legislation crucial to increasing the number of healthy Americans. When passed, the Personal Health Investment Today Act (PHIT) will allow people to use pre-tax medical accounts for physical activity expenses. The Physical Education Program (PEP) is a 14-year Federal grant from the Department of Education for schools to rebuild and revolutionize fitness programs. Americans are encouraged to support PHIT America by visiting www. PHITAmerica.org to advocate, provide a donation or participate in health and wellness programs. Just Keep Swimming

Ever have one of those first rounds where you think, “Do I really have to play again tomorrow?” Well, I know you do because I’ve had many myself (too many, really). These are the rounds where maybe you’re working on a swing change, or maybe you didn’t hit many greens or maybe you just caught a bad break. Whatever the reason, after you walk off the 18th green, you’re questioning everything from your swing to your pre-shot routine to that nasty protein bar you had to eat. Here’s an example of one of my bad days and how I bounced back. I shot an 89 in the first round of an FJT event last spring at Quail Ridge. Giving up is never an option, and I knew that I had to go out the second day and perform the way I know I’m capable of playing. But I had to use the first round as a learning opportunity so I could play better. Here is where I think some people go wrong: they get off the course and immediately analyze their round, typically in search of the bad 34

shots. One thing I prefer to do is highlight the good things I did during the round. It lifts my spirits and calms me down. I go over the whole round to understand what I need to improve upon for the next round, but I try not over-

analyze it. I learned a lot that day when I asked my dad what I was or wasn’t doing that the other girls did. The first thing he asked me was if I wanted sympathy or the truth. When I said the truth, he told me I simply didn’t do the extra things that the leaders did. He pointed out, for example, that I wasn’t walking up to greens on short shots, like from 50-60 yards. I was just looking at the flag and guessing. I took it to heart, and the next round I made sure I took the extra step on every shot. The result was my career low (at the time), a 74. What I learned from that experience I now use in every round. It doesn’t guarantee me a low score, but it got me one step closer to being a better player. The moral of the story is we all have bad days. Learn from them. Then get out of bed the next day and fight for every shot. Prove to yourself you’re better than the day before. Bad shots – bad days! - happen; it’s how you decide to deal with them that will turn your game around. Florida Golf Central • Volume 15, Issue 1

My Mini Golf Mini Golf has been a fun family activity for decades. Everyone’s played it and everyone loves it. Young or old, mini golf always seems to be a competition without having to develop a great golf game. Anyone can play and have fun. Finally, someone’s brought it to the home. Starting Time Golf has brought a fun and challenging home version to US market and the game has found great success. Golf’s top Junior Instruc-

tors are finding it to be one of the best tools available for teaching putting to kids. Clubs and organizations are finding My Mini Golf to be a great activity with endless possibilities for course layouts and competitions. From senior centers to boys and girls clubs, and from church groups to tournament ac36

tivities, My Mini Golf has found a place in more areas than management ever considered. My Mini Golf portable miniature golf system comes in 9- and 18-hole sets and can be set up quickly on any smooth surface. My Mini Golf is manufactured in Germany, and the product is durable, lightweight and portable. My Mini Golf appeals to any age group and can be used in a variety of settings. The game is the first and only portable indoor/outdoor golf putting kit for golfers and non-golfers designed to develop, improve or maintain their golf putting skills while having enjoyment and a unique challenge. My Mini Golf is in over 1,000 stores and pro shops in Europe, and in 50% of German golf clubs. Hugh Penton, Founder of Starting Time, comments: “This has been a crazy ride. I really felt I was taking a risk on My Mini Golf. But as soon as we showed up at the PGA expo, we have been selling and growing at a barely manageable pace. We originally wanted to get kids involved, but church groups and seniors seem to be really enjoying the game. I guess the bottom line is that the game is fun and challenging. Even very good golfers find challenge in the game, but it is really group and family fun where My Mini Golf shines. Campgrounds, boy’s clubs, scouting organizations and senior centers are some of the groups that have been using My Mini Golf. I am, of course, most proud of the fact that nearly all of the country’s top instructors endorse and or use the My Mini Golf in their junior programs. As a life-long golf enthusiast, it is very rewarding to have an impact on the future generation of golfers.”

My Mini Golf is winning many laurels in the golf field as one of the best ways to interest juniors to the fun of the game of golf. It has moved into a totally different field of giving the kids that have never had a chance to consider the golf game as a fun and interesting activity that they would enjoy as they grow up. They see it as a challenging sport that doesn’t require exceptional speed or height, just a good sense of concentration and love of the outdoors. With My mini Golf, fun comes first, yet the challenges of concentration are part of the game, which they can find with their friends and family who have the same enjoyment and challenges. Its popularity at KOA, Boys and Girls Clubs, summer camps, after school activities and parties, is a growing part of My mini Golf, according to Mary Anne Penton, Marketing Manager for this German made line. By adding special accessories to the line, such as putting green carpets, numbered cones, a new nylon carrying bag and a newly developed three-piece putter for different height kids, the popularity keeps growing. Starting Time®, exclusive distributors for the US and Canada for the My Mini Golf line are now also pleased to announce the addition of a new Chipping Set. According to Hugh Penton, President, the growing success of the My mini Golf putting line has developed growing interest in using the same type of fun learning experience for the other part of the short game, chipping. It has long been recognized by instructors and golf pros that chipping is a vital part of golf and needs to be learned at an early age. They see the fun aspect of My Mini Golf, combined with professional instruction of chipping to be as important as learning good putting. Now the two have been brought together into an affordable set called “The Short Game--Chipping”. A number of innovative items have been developed, together with five My mini Golf obstacles to give the program a well rounded learning and fun experience that will have the same dual purpose as putting is for My mini Golf. Juniors or seniors too can find the program to be both challenging and a great way to learn. A video on this new program can be seen on their website at www. startingtimegolf.com/mmg.html. Starting Time is a golf products company located in Oceanside, California. They have specialized in developing and marketing unique and original golf products for over eight years. MAKE YOUR SUMMER COUNT

shaping the ball both ways, controlling your trajectory, hitting from difficult lies, playing with the wind and so on. As your confidence and self-image builds, you start getting yourself in contention to win. Confidence comes from success and performing under pressure through quality practice. When you’re controlling your ball, your confidence builds. When your confidence builds, you win and before you know it, you’re Jordan Spieth playing in the Masters at a very high level. But this also starts in how you’re warming up before you play. So many players, I see them getting frustrated. They’re already getting negative, and they haven’t even gone to the first tee. But if you’ve put in the preparation, hitting different shots from around the course, practicing little chip shots, shots off slopes, you will be prepared to play, and ultimately, you’ve prepared to win.

4. Evaluate your game I already know you want to play better golf and improve your game. Everyone does. But how are you going to make sure this is the summer that means something, that gets you finally on track with your game? I’ve spent the last 20 plus years working with junior golfers and have run my own academy here in Central Florida, the Gary Gilchrist Golf Academy, since 2008. The key to success for our juniors in the Full Time Junior Program, and other juniors alike, is a plan for development. And that’s exactly what you need to make your summer count. You’re going to play your best golf this summer if you follow these simple steps I’ve outlined for you here:

1. Set goals The key here is being realistic. If you’re an eight handicap, breaking 80 would be a solid break through. These goals must be specific for you. If you have a poor attitude and poor outlook but turn it around with a clear set of goals with focus and dedication, that’s going to help you tremendously with your game.

2. Create a practice plan This part starts even before the 38

summer. What are the specifics drills you are going to implement into your practice to improve in the different areas of your game? If you’re finding you have more than 30 putts in a round, what is your area for improvement? Is it reading greens, short putts, long putts, attitude, self-talk or body language? Once you find what your area for improvement is, you can focus on those specific things to get better. The key is the plan for improvement and dedicating time to work on the different parts of your game: short game, full swing, putting, mental training, etc. and creating a schedule for your yourself to key in on those areas. This really helps improve the quality of what you are doing. This plan is like having a GPS for your game. If you get off track, the plan will pull you back on track so you don’t waste your time driving in circles, searching for answers.

3. Prepare to play, Prepare to win This part of the game is completely different from the technical side and involves tapping into your creativity, decision-making and shot-making ability. Learning how to control your wedges,

Assess your game so you know what you need to work on. I find today many juniors and college players, they accept where they are shooting 84, 85. You need to look at your game and assess what you’re doing well and be realistic on what you need to improve. This is where the practice plan comes back into play. It’s about stepping back from afar and being logical about your current ability.

5. Stay fit and rested Often overlooked but also very important. Make sure you’re eating right and drinking enough water, helping your energy levels and state of mind. In the summertime, it’s very hot and humid, but if you’re fit, those days wear on you a little bit less. You can swim, bike, run, whatever you prefer to do to get a little cardio in as part of your routine. You’ll sleep better, feel rejuvenated and be prepared for those long days at the course. But likewise, rest and balance is also important, especially in the summer, playing day after day, week after week. Take a day off and recharge and relax. This part is just as important as putting in your practice. Follow these tips and make your summer count! Florida Golf Central • Volume 15, Issue 1

Putting a Little Spring In Your Game

St. John’s G&CC, St. Augustine, FL. Thanks to turf colorants, note the contrast with dark green putting surface and lighter-colored surrounding slopes in the foreground, and the green fairway and straw-colored roughs in the distance.

Well, golf fans it has been a topsyturvy winter and early spring here in Florida. We can’t complain too much considering the weather across the northern regions from the Dakotas to the northeast. Some folks haven’t seen the ground since it’s been buried under snow for couple of months. But our turfgrass down here are classified as “warm season turf” and while January turned out warmer than usual overall, this March morning my outdoor thermometer is slowly climbing from a low of 41 degrees out here in my Dr. Phillips location, it’s 47 at 10:43 AM. Golf turf management is a profession combining art and science. Science and technology gives us tools to gorw and groom the turf. Good superintendents are those who learn when and where to apply those tools and techniques to yield the best long term results. They are in effect, artists, of their medium. The artist analogy is made even more evident by the recent introduction of turf colorants or pigment products. Literally they are turf paint! Admittedly they are a cosmetic crutch to hide brown dormant turf. To avoid exhorbitant spending for wall to wall coloring, most courses just use the colorant products on greens, tees and fairways 40

and the roughs are left to provide a contrasting brown or straw-color like some of the courses we see on TV coverage of the PGA Tour. Scientifically speaking, for warm season turfgrasses to resume sustained active growth, daytime and nighttime temperatures must remain consistently in the mid-80 and mid-60 degree range, respectively. In Central to South Florida, the combination of a progressively increasing day length and milder temperatures will make it possible to reestablish the green color, but, regardless of inputs, forcing the resumption of sustained growth activity and being able to produce a rapid recovery simply

is not possible Even courses that overseeded face conditioning challenges as the cool wet spring will delay transition back to the underlying bermudagrass. On a positive note, the base bermuda turf of Florida golf courses does possess a tremendous recuperative potential. Thus, with a few weeks of sunny, warm, and dry weather, a full recovery and reestablishment of good quality course conditioning can be accomplished. Yet, until more favorable environmental conditions are occurring, a degree of patience and understanding will be required during the remainder of the “winter or cool season” of golf play in Florida.

There is more to Lake Garda than the throngs of “besocked” Birkenstock wearing German tourist who flock to the lakeside during the breezy Italian summer. Lake Garda is home to the well know yet, at times, underappreciated appellation of Bardolino and it subset, the rosé Bardolino Chiaretto. At one time Bardolino was a local seasonal wine that was meant to be drunk within a year of the vintage, and was known as a lighter bodied somewhat fruity wine that lacked ageing potential. Bardolino today, however, is an exciting and innovative setting for a new generation of dynamic winemakers. Giovanna Tantini, who’s homonymous

Her Bardolino has not only great longevity, its supple and silky tannins give it a rich medium body with a full array of cherry and wild berries on the nose. The grapes in Bardolino and Chiaretto can be a combination of Corvina, Rondinella, and Molinara; these are the same as the grapes of Valpolicella (e.g. Amarone), but in the microclimate around Lake Garda with the calcareous, glacial, and

Lebron James is Honored by Don Shula and Pat Riley at the Annual Reid & Fiorentino Call of The Game Dinner Reid, Shula, LeBron, Fiorentino, Lauren Book, Ron Book and Pat Riley

Sun Sports HEAT TV broadcasters and two of South Florida’s leading sports media personalities, Eric Reid and Tony Fiorentino celebrated the eighth annual Reid & Fiorentino Call Of The Game Dinner & Celebrity Golf Classic, alongside today’s sports icons and philanthropic heroes of our community, and with two of the most celebrated local charity organizations and beneficiaries – Lauren’s Kids and the Dade Schools Athletic Foundation. The two-day fund raising event once again attracted some of the region’s biggest names in sports

and entertainment while honoring the achievements by some of the today’s most acclaimed community leaders, and marked an unprecedented acceptance by one of the world’s most renowned champions. For the first time since arriving in Miami, MVP and World Champion of The Miami HEAT, LeBron James, accepted the evening’s most prestigious accolade in front of a star-studded capacity crowd, that included Miami HEAT coach Erik Spoelstra, owner Micky Arison, Dwyane Wade, Gabrielle Union, Alonzo Mourning and Tracy Mourning, at the Reid and Fiorentino Call of the Game Dinner presented by Publix, on Saturday, March 15th, hosted by the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, FL. Miami HEAT President, Pat Riley, took to the stage to give a moving tribute and introduction to the legendary Miami Dolphins Coach Don Shula, before both Riley and Shula presented James together with The Don Shula Sports Legend Award. This was the first time the Miami HEAT star forward has accepted an award in-person and in South Florida. James was honored for his achievements on the court and for his work in the community with The LeBron James Family Foundation. James touched on his personal history of being raised by a single

mother and the rewards of overseeing his foundation, while also noting the work of Lauren Book and her own foundation, Lauren’s Kids, towards healing the survivors of child sexual abuse. “Thank you for this award, but all of these awards should go to you,” James said, as he looked towards Lauren Book on-stage. “The real hero and the real

superhero and the real great person is this woman right here.” Past winners of the Don Shula Sports Legend Award include inaugural honoree, Coach Don Shula, as well as Bob Griese, Dr. Jack Ramsay, Alonzo Mourning and The Miami HEAT’s, Ron Rothstein. Additional high profile honorees were awarded throughout the night, during which, acclaimed Hollywood actress and the evening’s Master of Ceremonies, Gabrielle Union, gave the audience a glamorous and memorable on-stage performance that included stories of her own experience with childhood sexual abuse as a 19 year-old teenager. Eric Reid awarded The Sonny Hirsch Excellence in Sports Broadcasting Award to Miami’s Channel 7 broadcaster, Steve Shapiro, for his work as an outstanding sport broadcaster. Shapiro made quite the humorous speech with anecdotes about various individuals in the audience that were received with waves of laughter. Miami HEAT veteran and NBA All-Star 3-point champion, James Jones, was presented with The Ted Arison Community Service Award by Lauren Book and Tony Fiorentino, for outstanding work throughout South Florida. For the third year, and to commemorate the legendary broadcaster, Jim Mandich, The Jim Mandich Courage and Commitment Award was presented to Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords by Ron Book, for which Chair of the National Democratic Party, Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman-Schultz made an acceptance speech on Giffords’ behalf. In 2011, Giffords survived a shooting near Tucson, Arizona, at a supermarket where she was meeting publicly with constituents. She was critically injured by a gunshot wound to the head, but mi-

The 2014 Reid & Fiorentino Call of the Game Dinner also featured an exceptional live performance on-stage by Sony Music Latin America artist, Arthur Hanlon, a silent auction throughout the evening, and a Live Auction presented by the annual auctioneer and FOX Sports’ Miami HEAT analyst, Jason Jackson. All proceeds raised throughout the night benefit Lauren’s Kids and the Dade Schools Athletic Foundation. Prior to the Call of the Game Dinner, The Celebrity Golf Classic Presented by SHARP Business Systems took place on Thursday, March 13th at the prestigious Turnberry Isle Miami. Like Lay’s Potato Chips, Betcha can’t eat just one! Hopefully my reference to a by-gone era slogan for one of the nation’s most popular potato chip brands won’t be lost on too many, but it is quite apropos for Lake Jovita’s two beautiful golf courses. Once you have played one, you will want to play the other. I did, on the same day! I started early one Saturday morning when the weather in Florida was a bit chilly this winter, but not even close to the pain and suffering our friends to the north were experiencing. Fortunately we can dress in layers and needed to as the temperatures at 8am were in the upper 40’s, but finished in the upper 60’s. The beautiful sunny but cool day turned out to be perfect for a couple of back to back rounds at Lake Jovita. First up was the South Course. De-

signed by PGA Tour great Tom Lehman and award winning golf architect Kurt Sandness it measures 6690 yards from the Blues (7153 from the tips was much more than I can handle). The South Course, compared to the North Course is much more heavily wooded, has more water and requires a bit more directional self-control. The first hole on the South Course has you staring down a hill that looks like it gets narrower the farther you hit it, and if you hit it too far, penalizes you with a little babbling brook. Hole #2 is a dogleg right par 5, that begs you go for it in two, as long as you hit a long drive. But the pin was tucked on the right hand side of the small green, just over the edge of a small pond. I did the smart thing and laid up short, chipped up and got an easy par. Most of the par 4’s on the front nine of the South Course are very picturesque, with trees, water and traps placed where they keep you honest. My crowning

achievement was the 172 yard, 7th, measuring 172 yards. I hit it stiff and dropped the easy birdie putt. (We just so happened to be playing through another group, and for once in my life I didn’t choke in front of a crowd). The back nine of the South Course includes a 537 yard par 5, that is all downhill, and if you blast your drive you can roll out to nearly 300 yards off the tee, or more. I was warming up and played a bit better on the back, getting pars on 11, and 14-17. The very aesthetically pleasing 18th has a fountain and pond on the left side of the fairway, beautiful to look at, but no fun to be in. I found the water, but salvaged a bogie. After a very tasty lunch in the clubhouse we set out to enjoy the North Course, designed by Kurt Sandness. The North Course has a more open feel, but is much more undulating than the South Course. By the time we teed off the temperature had reached 67, if only my score had been so low. After

Hole #1 50

Florida Golf Central • Volume 15, Issue 1

a couple of pars on the first 3 holes we rolled up to the 160 yard, par 3, 4th. This hole from tee to green looks like it drops off by hundreds of feet, but in reality it’s probably much less. With a pond on the left, sand on the right, you have to be very confident about club selection. I count myself blessed with a par. The back nine on the North Course starts with an interesting par 5, 517 yards. It is lined by trees and has a rather large tree in the middle of the fairway. So in this case, straight down the middle can be penalized, but makes for a great obstacle. As on one of the par 3’s on the South Course, I hit one stiff on the par 3, 13th. Playing 149 yards, significantly uphill, I hit a 7 iron that drew in to the pin and stopped 3 inches from an ace. The group in front of us had just walked off the green and turned to applaud the results of my shot. After a few more pars and an “other” on 17, I finished the day with back to back 82’s. Everyone from the staff in the Pro Shop, servers in the clubhouse, to the cart girls and starter were very kind and gracious. You will enjoy the experience, as I did, at Lake Jovita.

Hole #12 Lake Jovita is just 30 minutes north of Tampa amongst the rolling hills, undulating valleys and hardwood forests, which will remind you more of North Carolina than Florida. The more than 1,000 acre upscale, master planned community has a beautiful 30,000 square foot clubhouse, a 2,000 sq. ft. state-of-the-art fitness center,

four fast dry Har-Tru clay tennis courts and a Jr. Olympic size swimming pool. For a golfer’s get-away you will want to check into one of the beautifully appointed villas that surround the golf course. For tee times call 352-588-9200. For stay & play specials call 866-5883149. Florida Coalitions Unite in Tallahassee for “Florida Golf Day”

The North Florida PGA made another visit to our Capitol in Tallahassee on Feb. 13 for the annual “Florida Golf Day”. Rich Smith, NFPGA ED/CEO, Mike Touhey, NFPGA President and celebrity PGA Instructor Brad Brewer along with other major Florida Golf Associations, spent the day with legislators and lobbyists to proclaim the value and impact the game of golf has on the State of Florida. It is estimated that the game of golf has a direct economic impact of over 7 billion dollars annually! The overall impact approaches 14 billion dollars taking into consideration the ancillary dollars it brings in. The Florida Golf Coalition included the PGA of America, PGA TOUR, LPGA, USGA, Club Managers Association of America, National Golf Course Owners Association, Golf Course Superintendents Association of America, World Golf Hall of Fame, World Golf Foundation, The First Tee, Florida Golf Course Superintendents Association, Florida Turfgrass Association, Florida Chapter of Club Managers Association of America, North and South Florida Sections of the PGA of America, Florida State University PGA Golf Management Program, Florida State Golf Association and the Golf Channel. In unity, they were all represented by their leaders and associates to meet with committees and legislators throughout the day to share our story about just how much the game of golf really means to our state. Strength in numbers assures that critical impression to the legislators, as they are extremely busy planning for how their budgets will be distributed. You could sense that they do under54

stand just how valuable the game of golf is to “The Golf Capital of the World”. We’ll continue to follow up and keep our game on the forefront of their minds and high on their list of priorities for promotional dollar expenditures to continue to grow our contribution to tourism, tax dollars, jobs and the game! Of course there was some golf going on in the courtyard during the day! The North Florida Section set up an exhibition with an inflatable hitting cage for guest PGA Instructor Brad Brewer to give free tips to the legislators and guests in the courtyard. There was even a putting duel between The House and Senate during their lunch break!

The SFPGA Junior Championship Tour presented by The Honda Classic held event #2 at the Country Club of Coral Springs. The sold out field featuring some of the top junior golfers in South Florida did not disappoint. Joshua August of Boynton Beach, fired a lights out 6-under-par 65 on day one which included 7 birdies and 1 bogey. August entered day 2 with a three shot lead over Anthony Gabriele of Wellington. Gabriele had an astonishing 9 birdies on day one, but a few

costly holes put him in the club house with a 68. Gabriele started the day with four straight pars before recording his first birdie on number five. With some momentum gaining, Gabriele stepped on the 200 yard par 3 9th and hit the shot of the tournament. Gabriele’s tee shot landed 5 feet short of the hole and rolled in for his first career hole-in-one. Gabriele would go on to add one more birdie on the back nine and card a bogey free 67 to take the Overall Boys Title by one shot over August. Sachin Kumar of Port St Lucie continued his stellar play and managed to take the Boys 13-15 age division title, while Joshua August would go on to claim the Boys 16-18 age division. Valeria Sofia Pacheco managed to pull out back to back Championship Tour titles. Pacheco, who won Champi-

The Hallandale Beach native came out firing in day 2 and recorded a 1-under-par 70 to force a sudden death playoff with Jenna Tuccio of Marco Island. Pacheco would need only one hole to claim the Overall Girls Title. Tuccio’s great play was enough to claim the Girls 16-18 division title, while youngster Dana Williams of Boca Raton would go on to the claim the Girls 13-15 division title.

Students Receive a Message of Inspiration from Honorary PGA Member, Dennis Walters. The show began with a special performance by Dennis’ super dog and best friend, Bucky. After Bucky tried to steal the show, Dennis took the stage to show students his amazing ability to strike a golf ball while sitting in his swivel chair. Students were enthusiastic after each shot and enjoyed many of the great trick shots they observed. Outside of his amazing talents and performance; it is the message that Dennis conveys that is most important. His

message of inspiration and perseverance is conveyed throughout his show; even though he does not have use of his legs, he can still do what he loves most, play golf! Immediately following the show Jersey Mike’s was on site providing free lunch to all those who attended the show. Special thanks to Dennis Walters and his team, students & faculty at HL Watkins Middle School, and Jersey Mike’s for a wonderful day.

Kendall Dye wins IOA Golf Classic Kendall Dye tied the Alaqua Country Club course record on Monday by shooting a 6-under-par 65 to win the IOA Golf Classic by three strokes. Dye finished at 11-underpar for the tournament to claim her first Symetra Tour victory. Dye, who was playing in her 56th career Symetra Tour event, got over the hump by virtue of a flawless back nine that including four birdies and a chip-in eagle on the 16th hole. “It’s pretty surreal, I had good feelings and positive thoughts going into the day, but I was three shots back,” said Dye. “It was a pretty special day, it was a long day and it was Jesus on the back nine; I had just nine putts.” Dye entered the day three shots back of Hannah Yun. She birdied the tenth hole and then made back-toback birdies on the 12th and 13th. She seized complete control of her destiny with a birdie on 15 and an eagle on the 16th hole. “My emotions were calm and it was pretty

cool to finish strong and actually put a performance together and win.” On the 18th hole, with a three stroke cushion, Dye had a short tap in putt to seal the victory. She made the par putt and then was doused with water from friends and fellow Symetra Tour players Sara Brown, Mallory Blackwelder and Calle Nielson. “I really wanted to ace the 18th hole because I stuck it close all day and told my caddy that we were going to make a long one,” said Dye. “I was really glad that they stayed and celebrated with me.” With the win, Dye skyrockets from 14th to second on the Volvik Race for the Card money list at $19,952 in earnings on the year. “The win definitely takes the pressure off for the rest of the year. I still need to compete, I still need to play in hopefully all of the events, but now maybe I have a little leeway where I may not have to play ten weeks in a row.” The journey has been long and

trying for Dye, who has played on the Symetra Tour since 2010. “My mission every year is to come away with an LPGA Tour card and I’ve been to Q-School too many times so I’m looking at these 19 or 20 events as my Q-School,” said Dye. “I’ve got 60 rounds to play well and earn some money to get onto the next stage.” Dye also received a free pair of Tifosi Optics sunglasses by having the lowest round of the day. Tifosi Optics is the official sunglasses provider of the Symetra Tour. Yun, who led by one stroke after two rounds, shot an even-par 71 and finished in second place at 8-under for the tournament. She made back-to-back bogeys to open her round and never recovered. With the second place finish, Yun jumps into the top-10 on the Volvik Race for the Card money list. She has earned $10,770 after four events this season.

The sliding glass walls of the new 55th Hole lounge open onto a terrace overlooking an outdoor gathering space, complete with fire pit.

Bonita Bay Club Completes $11.5 Million Renovation Bonita Bay Club’s “Vision 2013” is now reality, and club members could not be happier. Planning for two years, closing the nearly 30-year old clubhouse for eight months and spending $11.5 million resulted in a new look, a more functional layout, fresh amenities and new members. The most striking change was the conversion of the golf shop into a 4,700-square-foot open-air bar and casual grill. The 55th Hole – Bonita

Bay Club has five 18-hole courses – has glass walls that slide away to let the outdoors in. Glass railings on the surrounding wraparound terrace allow unobstructed views of the green practice range, blue skies and Bonita Bay’s mature trees and colorful landscape. Stairs lead to an inviting outdoor seating area where a 14-foot log fire pit – the largest in Florida – is the focal point, helping to make this the best place to relax and watch

Bonita Bay’s breathtaking sunsets. The colors of those sunsets provided inspiration for the 55th Hole and the fire pit patio. “Soft oranges and the dark blue of the sky just as the sun drops behind the horizon guided our color choices,” said Migena Gace, ASID, who designed the interiors as part of the architectural team from Peacock and Lewis Architects of North Palm Beach. “Light fluctuations throughout the day and into the evening, and the play of colors and fabrics add vibrancy and visual interest.” The new 55th Hole lounge has proved to be the club members’ most popular gathering spot. A 127-inch media wall, built by Beyond Audio Visual of Fort Myers with 18 LED panels, can work as one screen or four. Its pictures, sharper than highdefinition, compete for attention with the surrounding outdoors. Eight 60-inch television screens are incorporated into a square, ceiling-mounted wooden structure suspended above the center bar. The golf shop was relocated to the new 30,000-square-foot Golf Super Center, linked to the clubhouse by an expansive golf cart staging area, Florida Golf Central • Volume 15, Issue 1

graced with pavers, wooden arbors and complementary landscaping. Rocking chairs overlook the driving range from the new building’s terrace; underground storage accommodates 240 carts; 2,900 golf bags are organized inside; and the views from the pro shop rival those of the 55th Hole. The golf shop has expanded inventory, a coffee bar, two televisions and outdoor views through two walls of glass. The clubhouse renovation impacted every aspect of club-member experience with considerations large – visual transitions were carefully planned from room to room – to small – under-counter technology that keeps salads cold on the buffet table without vats of ice. “The country club business has changed with a new generation of members who appreciate a more casual, relaxed look,” said Gace. “We aimed for a fresh look that is timeless and classic with a modern twist, one that has broad appeal for members old and new.” Gace crafted a balanced color scheme using time-tested berry reds, warm taupes and punches of orange, which she compares to adding a dash of lemon juice to a dish just before serving. Adding further splashes of color throughout the clubhouse are beautiful pieces of abstract artwork. “They create movement and a fresh, new look and have been well received by club members,” said Gace. Several changes make the clubhouse space more functional and visually appealing. Custom-made banquettes along the wall in the room that adjoins the new lounge look like built-in furniture but are mounted on castors; they can be moved easily to make room for a dance floor. Steam tables were replaced with a sleek, serpentine stone buffet that was moved to allow the addition of comfortable banquettes along the casual dining room walls. The buffet, equipped with concealed heating and cooling elements, fronts an open production kitchen that makes diners feel part of the action. A distinctive new openhearth pizza oven is covered with handcut red and orange tiles that mimic the flames within. Carpet colors remain consistent from room to room, but the pattern size changes to match the scale of the space. Upholstery adds interest with texture, not color that could compete with the striking carpet design. The octagonal, glass-walled Ballroom, one of the largest spaces in the clubhouse, has a more elegant Florida Golf Central • Volume 15, Issue 1

look that is more inviting to members. The white ceiling, which had lent an island feel, has been coated with a warm metallic taupe that reflects and changes with the light. The brightly patterned carpet, newly upholstered chairs and fresh artwork create a sophisticated backdrop for celebratory gatherings and special events. Behind the scenes, the kitchen was totally reconfigured, with better storage and an improved loading dock to increase efficiency and maximize space.

the leadership of Dan Miles, general manager and chief operating officer, an expansive program to restore the club’s legendary amenities and service was launched. “No club in Southwest Florida offers a wider variety of recreational and social opportunities than Bonita Bay Club. The club has 90 holes of golf, 18 HarTru tennis courts, a resort-style swim facility, a 10,000-square-foot, state-ofthe-art fitness center and spa, and two clubhouses, all complemented by a great

The new open-hearth pizza oven is covered with hand-cut red and orange tiles that mimic flames. Improvements extended beyond the clubhouse. The first of a threephase golf course irrigation renovation provides the most efficient use of water and electricity with the most sophisticated technology in the industry. The asphalt cart paths on the Arthur Hills-designed Marsh golf course were replaced and upgraded with a combination of concrete and crushed coquina shells. This completed the cart path renovation on all three courses within Bonita Bay and eliminated asphalt except in parking areas. D. Garrett Construction of Naples was the contractor for the project. “Vision 2013” is part of a multiyear capital improvements initiative to make the club, which boasts the largest membership of the 140 clubs in Lee and Collier counties, the most attractive and well-rounded in Southwest Florida. Members took ownership of Bonita Bay Club in the spring of 2010. Under

tradition of member camaraderie and environmental stewardship,” said Miles. Bonita Bay Club has three Arthur Hills-designed golf courses within the 2,400-acre Bonita Bay community and two courses by Tom Fazio at nearby Bonita Bay Club Naples, which features a pure golf experience in a natural setting with no residential development. The club’s tennis and swim center has one of the most active tennis programs in Southwest Florida, directed by a United States Professional Tennis Association Master Professional. A new stadium court and fitness center are planned for 2015..

State-Of-The-Art Golf Course Renovation The Seagate Country Club unveiled a multi-million dollar renovation of its 18-hole championship private golf course. “The Hamlet Golf Club was purchased and renamed The Seagate Country Club in November 2012 and was then fully renovated to create a world class golf facility to complement to the award winning Seagate Hotel & Spa and Seagate Beach Club,” stated E. Anthony Wilson, Seagate Hospitality Group CEO. As the original home of the first Golf Digest School, the renovation preserved the original Joe Lee-designed course while enhancing the course with advanced state-of-the-art grasses and technology that were not in existence when Joe Lee originally designed the course in 1973. Gene Bates, Golf Course Architect, and Jeff Sluman, PGA Champions Tour player and current club member, were instrumental in providing direction on course enhancements to ensure the course met PGA standards and maintained the original Joe Lee course design. Jesse Riddle, Course Superintendent, was additionally instrumental in bringing Bates’ and Sluman’s redesign to fruition.

The Seagate Country Club Chief enhancements to the course include the selection of Celebration Grass for the fairways, and TIF Eagle Grass for the greens. Additional improvements include re-designing new cart paths with synthetic stone and crushed seashells; adding yardage to select holes and improving women’s tees; enhancing bunkers with G-Angle sand; and introducing new hi-tech “Precedent i2” GPS golf carts from Club Car® that are equipped with Visage Mobile Golf Infor-

Darren Panks, Director of Golf and International PGA Professional, directs the 18-hole course with Head PGA Professional Andy Anderson who has been at the club for over 15 years. The Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance

Amelia Island, one of Florida’s little paradises with historic Fernandina Beach, world class golf that sweeps along the Atlantic Ocean, the Palace Saloon - the oldest tavern in Florida, and for the past 19 years on the second weekend in March, Amelia Island hosts the Concours d’Elegance. For three days this sleepy little island in northeast Florida turns into a motoring nirvana for all things automotive. Sometimes deemed the Pebble Beach of the East, the Concours offers multiple days of high-octane fun with over the top super-cars, and on Sunday the car show of car shows, the Concours. This year was no different. If you left your show car at home, not to worry. There are two auctions held during the Concours that gets the standing room only crowds gasping at every bid. Prior to the auctions, all of the cars can be previewed and you can make out your wish list or shopping list, depending upon the size of your wallet. This year at the RM Auction on Saturday a 1937 Delahaye Competition Court Torpedo Roadster sold for six million, as in six million dollars. Close but still extremely expensive, on Friday at the Goodings & Company auction, a 1968 Porsche 907 Longtail race car sold for 3.6 million, yes, also dollars. These auctions bring out the cream of the crop in automotive eye candy and some new owners will drive 66

them and others are filling holes in their collections. Either way it’s a great way to see some of the world’s premier cars up close and personal. Other events that take place during the Concours include a wine dinner, a Porsche driving experience, test drives of new models by the manufactures, a vintage fashion show, and a black tie gala dinner. Also, unique drivers’ seminars. One seminar this year featured Johnny Rutherford, Parnelli Jones, Al Unser, and Bobby Unser. All have Indianapolis 500 trophies in their cases to go along with other distinguished motoring honors they acquired during their storied racing careers. A growing trend around the country is Cars and Coffee. Even Jerry Seinfeld offers up a slight twist to that with Cars and Comedians, but they eventually end up getting a coffee while riding in a classic car. With that said the Concours has a Cars and Coffee on Saturday and is free and open to the public. It features local car clubs and their members’ classic and exotic cars. The main event held on Sunday at the Golf Club of Amelia Island at the Ritz-Carlton transforms the 10th and 18th fairways into a showcase of automobiles, both American and foreign. This year there were over 300 vehicles and entrants came from

around the globe - Germany, Austria, Canada, Monaco, England, Italy, and as close by as Jacksonville. Models represented include household names such as Packard, Cadillac, Ford, Rolls-Royce, Ferrari, and MercedesBenz. And there are models that you don’t find in The Penny Saver – Steffy, American Underslung Traveler, Jolly, Cisitalia, Armstrong 6-Passenger Trap, and Flesher Flyer. Okay, the last one is a motorcycle. This year’s honoree was Jochen Mass, whose racing victories included a Formula One win at the 1975 Spanish Grand Prix and in the twilight of his career he won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1989. The Concours d’Elegance is an action-packed weekend that offers a unique car experience no matter what your car interest may be. The proceeds that are raised benefits several charities, The Community Hospice of Northeast Florida, The Spina Bifida of Jacksonville, The Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society, and Shop with Cops. Over $2.2 million has been donated to date. Next year’s Concours will be held March 13-15, 2015. Visit their website at www.ameliaconcours.org for more information. If you attend, throw your clubs in the car just in case you want to squeeze in a round between events.

Calculated from the laser-measured line-of-sight distance, incline or decline, trajectory of the ball, current temperature and specific altitude, TGR displays the adjusted “plays like” range. When activated, Club Selector factors in the golfer’s specific hitting strength and TGR to the target, automatically recommending the proper club for each shot. The user simply inputs his or her personal striking distance for three specific clubs and the GX-4i2 does the rest, even indicating when the distance falls between clubs. For more information on GX-4i2 features, pricing and dealer locations, go to www.leupold.com/golf or call 1-800-LEUPOLD. Join the discussion on Facebook at www.facebook.com/LeupoldGolf. 70

Vibram® FiveFingers® After winning Best New Product at its debut last year- Vibram® FiveFingers® is back to showcase its lineup of barefootstyled shoes, and introduce a new design specifically for golf – the V-Classic series. Last year the FiveFingers® Demo Day booth enjoyed long lines of golfers testing products, and they’ll be back again this year with more shoes to demo on the range. The V-Classic design features a new outsole created specifically for golf, with two upper options – leather in the LR model, and textile in the standard Classic model. Both offer a traditional lacing system for a classic golf shoe look. Golfers have been practicing and sometimes playing golf barefoot for years, contending that better feel for the ground under their feet gives them improved balance, posture and swing mechanics. Wearing FiveFingers® for training in the gym, on the practice range or even during the game allow the body to get close to this same barefoot feeling while protecting the sole of the foot. . Eighteen Year Old Hanzelko Wins 2014 Heathrow Men's Club Championship

Heathrow Country Club has a new Men’s Club Champion. Eighteen year old Timmy Hanzelko won the coveted title by defeating Erik Hansen in a sudden death playoff.

Choosing to compete in the Championship Division at nearly 7,000 yards, Hanzelko was one stroke off the lead and tied for second place, after the first round. The second and final round saw a heated battle with several players, including Hanzelko, vying for the lead. Eric Hansen fired a stellar 3 under par 33 to finish with a two day total of 147 and a tie with Hanzelko. That forced Hansen and Hanzelko into a sudden death playoff on Hole #1. After two nice drives, both players played their second shots on to the green. Hansen was 12 feet and Hanzelko 10 feet from the hole, on the same line. Hansen rolled his putt dead center but came up short. Hanzelko took advantage of the “read” and holed his putt for a birdie and the Championship. Timmy Hanzelko began his journey to capture this illustrious golf title at the tender age of four. Under the guidance

and tutelage of Tim Burns, Director of Golf at Heathrow Country Club, Timmy learned the fundamentals of the game and developed both his natural talent and exceptional skill. Over the next few years he proved to be a formidable young competitor and won the Clubs Junior Season Championship several times. Timmy continued to develop his golf game throughout his junior high and high school years with Chris Holmes, Director of Instruction at Heathrow Country Club. He attended Lake Mary Prep and then Trinity Prep, where he played with distinction on the golf teams for both schools. After recently graduating from high school, Timmy was offered and accepted a scholarship to attend and play golf for Mercer University, one of America’s oldest and most distinctive institutions of higher learning in Macon, Georgia.
