Golf Anti-Counterfeiting Group Efforts Lead to Significant Sentences in Ongoing Fight Against Fakes Seven men convicted of manufacturing and selling counterfeit products DONGGUAN , CHINA – The U.S. Golf Manufacturers Anti-Counterfeiting Working Group (The Golf Group) announced today the convictions and sentences of seven men charged with manufacturing and selling counterfeit golf products, another critical step in the Golf Group’s efforts to enforce anticounterfeiting laws internationally. The Chinese court system handed down the sentences in two separate court cases last week. On May 9, Mr. Guan Zhenyan was convicted of selling more than 650 counterfeit products, including clubs, bags, and apparel. As a result, he was sentenced to a two-year prison term and a fine of more than $64,000 USD. Three days later there was another victory for The Golf Group when Wu

Guolin and five accomplices were also convicted and sentenced for selling counterfeit products in Xiamen City. Mr. Guolin, deemed one of the men primarily responsible for the crime, will receive nearly four years in prison and a fine of more than $160,000 USD. The other principal in the case, LV Xingda, will serve three years in prison and pay a fine of more than $80,000 USD. Four others were handed prison sentences and fines in conjunction with this case. All of the counterfeit products and means of manufacturing were also seized. “We are very pleased to learn of the strong sentences handed down by the Chinese courts today, “said Joe Nauman, Executive Vice President for Corporate and Legal for Acushnet Company.

“These convictions are another important victory in on our ongoing battle to protect our brands and to protect golfers worldwide.” “We’ll continue to do our part to educate consumers on how to avoid counterfeit purchases, but the enforcement efforts around the world are a critical part of this fight as well,” said Stephen Gingrich, Vice President of Global Legal Enforcement for Cleveland Golf. “These sentences demonstrate the seriousness of the crimes and the positive impact being made as a result of the growing cooperation between the group and Chinese authorities.” More information about the dangers of counterfeit golf clubs and products, and how to avoid them, can be found at www.keepgolfreal.com.

About the Golf Manufacturers Anti-Counterfeiting Working Group The Golf Anti-Counterfeiting Group consists of five of the most well-known golf companies in the world—Acushnet Company whose brands are Titleist, FootJoy and Scotty Cameron; Callaway-Odyssey; Cleveland Golf, Srixon and Never Compromise; PING; and TaylorMade-adidas Golf and Ashworth. Formed in 2004, the Golf Anti-Counterfeiting Group has worked with international law enforcement and government agencies to conduct raids and investigations of counterfeit operations, as well as raise public awareness of the issue. Since 2011, the Golf Group’s efforts with the help of Chinese law enforcement led to the seizure of more than 500,000 counterfeit golf products highlighted by a clustering campaign initiative resulting in the arrest of more than 30 suspects from raids of 14 different locations. 8

Heart to Heart: Community Care Homes, Inc. Benefits from The Mercedes-Benz of Orlando-Maitland Dealer’s Golf Tournament Say the word “charity” and most people conjure up the image of an organization with its hand out for a quick donation. However, a charity is really a business, which is why one of Central Florida’s most prominent community leaders has joined forces with Heart to Heart: Community Care Homes, Inc. The nonprofit organization has been around since 1992 and through new leadership and commitment has used

its donations wisely to fund a highly successful business model to serve homeless women and children with housing, jobs and education. “ The organization has been helping families since 1992. Heart to Heart Homes is offering families stability, while education and jobs are the way out of poverty.” quotes Ellen Parcell, President & CEO of the organization. “I am approached weekly by nonprofit organizations for support,” notes Bob Berryhill, General Manager of Mercedes-Benz of Orlando’s dealership in Maitland. “As the GM I evaluate the organization’s mission, values and lead-

Florida Keys Country Club Hosts Golf Tournament to Celebrate Golf Ambassador’s 105th Birthday Florida Keys Country Club hosts a special golf tournament to celebrate the 105th birthday of George “Pop” Rockett, the Golf Ambassador for the Keys. Regardless of his age, Pop still runs two tournaments per week at Florida Keys Country Club. George Rockett – known as “Pop” was 105 years-old on March 28, 2014, with a sharp mind, literally hundreds of friends and a lifetime of golf that began in Glenside, PA 96 years ago when he started caddying at Sunnybrook and Burn Brae country clubs in suburban Philadelphia. George was married 60 years to his sweetheart Josephine, who passed away in 1995 in George’s arms at their home in Big Pine Key, Florida. A faithful churchgoer from the time he was a small boy, he never took a drink or smoked a cigarette, and he credits these factors along with his lifelong love of golf to his longevity. He was a typesetter his whole career, a partner in a Philadelphia typesetting plant, but nothing interfered with his passion for golf. Never a 18

country club member, George would come home early in the morning from work, have breakfast with Josephine, head off to the golf course (Cobbs Creek, Burn Brae and many other local fee clubs), play 36- holes with his friends and go straight back to work in the city. This was a regular routine usually twice a week.

George became a fine self-taught player starting with his caddying days. He once shot a 63 at Burn Brae sometime in the early 40’s, shot a 71 as a guest at Manufacturers Country Club in Philadelphia, a 70 at Aronimink, and was for many years a scratch player. The first Club he ever officially joined was Florida Keys Country Club in Marathon, Florida, where he made his 5th and final hole-in-one at the 145 (senior tee) 16th hole with a 3-wood at the age of 96. He decided to quit playing when he swung his driver at the Florida Keys club 210yard 2nd hole, fell down and had a tough time getting up. “Pop” says he never bought a golf ball until he was well in his 40’s, because ever since he was a 9-year old caddy he developed a remarkable ability to find lost balls. “Pop” Rockett is an extraordinary person, beloved by hundreds. In his Abington High School yearbook of 1927, along with has picture was a quote that he wanted in the book: “To Have A Friend, Be A Friend” George “Pop” Rockett scoring the tournament by hand. And he’s still doing it! Florida Golf Central • Volume 15, Issue 2

Look Before You Pump’ and Fuel up the Golf Cart/UTV The Outdoor Power Equipment Institute (OPEI), an international trade association representing 100 small engine, utility vehicle and outdoor power equipment manufacturers and suppliers, is alerting golf cart owners to be aware of new fuels that can destroy or damage the engine – and stop your golf game before it even starts. The national ethanol education and consumer protection campaign, called ‘Look Before You Pump’ is cautioning gas powered, golf cart owners that it is harmful and illegal to use higher than 10 percent ethanol gas when fueling up. The urgency of the industry’s campaign comes from research that shows high-ethanol blends of gasoline can damage or destroy small engines not designed to handle it. A recent OPEI/Harris Interactive study shows the vast majority of Americans (71 percent) are “not at all sure” if it is illegal or legal to put high level ethanol gas (i.e., anyFlorida Golf Central • Volume 15, Issue 2

thing higher than 10 percent ethanol) into engines such as those in boats, mowers, chain saws, snow mobiles, generators and other engine products. “Although there is continued uncertainty in the renewable fuels market, one thing for certain is that the way consumers select and use fuel will be changing in the coming years,” said Kris Kiser, President and CEO of OPEI. “It is incumbent upon our industry to be proactive. We are cautioning American consumers and business owners whose livelihood depends on our equipment to be more mindful at the gas pump. Don’t assume that the gas you put in your car can still go in your mower, chain saw or generator.” (or golf cart)….. OPEI urges consumers to read their equipment operating manual before filling with gasoline to ensure they use the right fuel for that engine. For more information, visit www.OPEI.org. 19

My Golf Dad Father’s Day will always be a holiday that is very close to me. My dad has sacrificed so much for me to be able to play a game I love. He books flights, schedules tournaments, travels with me, and takes days off of work just so I can improve; he is kind of like a soccermom, but a golf-dad. About a month ago, he surprised me with tickets to the Master’s on Saturday and I was absolutely speechless! Saturday morning we drove up to Augusta, and spent the Hannah and her Dad, Mark Berman

Venetian Bay Golf Club Inaugural Women’s Invitational The Women’s Golf Association at Venetian Bay Golf Club could not wait to host their inaugural women’s invitational. Club General Manager Kyle Mooney and PGA Head Professional Lenny Varacelli were excited to focus on women’s golf and introduce a lot of area players to their great facility. The ladies then formed a variety of committees with one common goal; to make this the best women’s invitational of the year! Thus, “Puttin’ on the Ritz at Venetian Bay” was born. As the morning of the event arrived, everyone at the club embraced the theme with open arms. The ladies of Venetian Bay arrived bright and early bearing their themed garb and ready for a wonderful day. Lenny wore a tailored three piece suit and the cart staff greeted each arriving player with their bowties and bowler hats in perfect form. Ladies were positioned

Ron Allsop, or “DJ Doc” as we like to call him, even had them all rocking and dancing to theme music as they practiced their shots and waited to head out on the course. After Mother Nature provided an exceptional day of golfing weather, the players made their way to the clubhouse to enjoy the banquet hosted by the Venetian Bay WGA. Lunch was served and all had the pleasure of enjoying a delectable dish provided by the club’s extremely talented Head Chef, Ron Tucker. After handing out the many prizes and gifts the ladies collected for the participants, the afternoon wound down, each player leaving with a full stomach and a big smile on their face. The best scene of the day, was watching the ladies of Venetian Bay toast a few glasses of champagne and celebrate the incredible event they had worked so hard to put together and done such a great job delivering. Only one questioned remained at the end of the day; how do we top that next year?! Venetian Bay Golf Club welcomes public play daily and would love the opportunity to make your next event a memorable one as well. Please contact Kate Minnock at (386) 299-5571 for more information. The Vinoy is a true gem in the downtown St. Petersburg waterfront. Pink and proud and celebrating over 85 years of historic hospitality, the Vinoy Renaissance is a destination for business and leisure travelers alike. Many don’t know the interesting story of the Vinoy. Here’s a brief glimpse into the history. In 1923, Aymer Vinoy Laughner, a wealthy Pennsylvania businessman, had to stand idly by as Walter Hagen drove several golf balls off the face of his prize pocket watch. The

watch survived, the ball landed across beach drive on what later became the Vinoy Park Hotel in 1925. The hotel opened on New Year’s Eve 1925 they rang in the New Year in one of the most spacious and grand ballrooms, which measured 50 feet wide, 125 feet long and was two stories high. Throughout the 20’s and 30’s Presidents and celebrities, and northerners traveling by train and car flocked to the “grand dame” of St. Petersburg. In the 1940’s the hotel ceased opera-

tion and became a training facility for the U.S. Army Air Force and subsequently the U.S. Maritime Service. More than 100,000 trainees passed through the doors. In December 1944 the hotel re-opened under new ownership. The 50’s through the 80’s were not kind to the Vinoy, but in May 1990 the restoration and renovation of the Vinoy began. As the restoration unfolded construction workers removing an oddly placed wall between the ballroom and the lobby discovered a hidden vault containing 1,400 silver pieces, wrapped in newspapers dated 1934, and most stamped “The Vinoy”. In 1992 the Vinoy reopened as the Stouffer Hotel and was named by the National Trust for Historic Preservation as one of the Historic Hotels of America. In 1993 it was purFlorida Golf Central • Volume 15, Issue 2

The cocktail and dining options at the Vinoy range from the ambience of the lobby and Verando Patio great destinations for a cocktail and people watching, to the award-winning cuisine of the Marchand’s Bar & Grill. The course is located on Snell Isle, just minutes from the resort and is a beautifully manicured course, with an abundance of Florida wildlife and fauna. Over the years political and celebrity visitors have included: Jimmy Stewart,

Babe Ruth, Presidents Calvin Coolidge and Herbert Hoover, along with Marilyn Monroe and Joe DiMaggio. More recent visits by Paul Newman, Julia Roberts, George Clooney, Tom Petty and Brad Pitt suggest the Vinoy has not lost it’s luster for the “rich and famous”. No Holding Back In light of Tiger Woods missing the U.S. Masters due to back surgery, the issue of back pain among golfers is a pressing topic and is all too familiar for professional golfer Natalie Gulbis. When Natalie joined the LPGA Tour in 2002 at the age of 18, she quickly won over the hearts of the American golf community with her youthful energy and competitive spirit. Yet, many people are surprised to learn how much back pain Natalie used to suffer from every day on the golf course. Natalie’s back problems started in college when she was diagnosed with a degenerative disc disorder. Upon starting her professional career, her problems became increasingly severe until it got to the point where she was

out about Tampa-based Laser Spine Institute, the leader in minimally invasive spine surgery, from fellow professional golfer and mentor Peter Jacobsen. In order to figure out exactly what caused Natalie’s pain, Laser Spine Institute conducted her MRI while she was in a golf posture – a unique treatment option that had never been done before. This groundbreaking approach gave both Natalie and her doctors a very clear understanding of why she was in pain by enabling them to see exactly how her discs were touching her nerves throughout the golf swing. Her surgery was a success, rendering her completely pain free the very same day. One month post-surgery she was back on the golf course playing again. Her surgery not only salvaged her career but also enabled a pain free Natalie to come back more competitive than she had been in years. Last season, she finished T9 at the Ricoh Women’s British Open and the amount of top-10 finishes during the 2012 season were

SIMPLE SOLUTION Golf Training Aid

• Easily Attaches to Your Club • Eliminates Cupping & Bowing of the Wrist • Promotes Greater Arc Width • Teaches Proper Hinge for Solid Contact • Promotes One-Piece Takeaway • Eliminates Scooping the Ball When Chipping. To build a reliable golf swing, the lead wrist must be in the proper position. Cupping or bowing the lead wrist results in poor accuracy and a loss of distance. Keeping the wrist flat produces a square clubface throughout the swing resulting in straight solid shots. The Simple Solution is the easiest way to add accuracy and distance to your game.

Rotational Stability Lunge Stability throughout motion is one key to any great golf swing (and by great I mean efficient). Very few tour pro’s have the same “looking” swing. There is one thing that all the great, consistent ball strikers have in common= consistency of sequence. Our exercise this month is a great one I love to use that will help develop a consistent sequence, the Rotational Stability Lunge. This exercise works not only leg strength, but will help the lower body develop stability through thoracic rotation. Starting in a standing position, use a light medicine ball (anything up to 6 pounds should be great) and stand with your arms holding the ball in a relaxed position. Step backwards in to a reverse lunge while rotating the upper body toward the side of your lead leg (if you step back with your right leg, rotate to your left as

34

pictured) keeping a straight torso (shoulders point straight to the ceiling and 90degree in the lead knee). While stepping up, the trailing leg (as pictured, the right leg) should be brought to a 90degree flexed position at the same time the working leg (left leg as pictured) should be extended contracting the quads, hamstrings and glutes. While stepping up, the ball should be brought up across the body (think left hip to above the right shoulder). This exercise is great for lower body strength, lower body stability, glute firing sequence and also works several different shoulder positions working flexion, extension, adduction and abduction- all positions included in the golf swing. We consider this a compound exercise (encompasses all part of the body) so we will typically use this as part of three exercise combination.

All the Cool Dads Are Playing Volvik! Color Golf Balls All the Rage, Gaining Traction on Professional Tours

38

These are not your father’s colored golf balls! Volvik has entered the market place with a bang, gaining market share and becoming the fastest growing golf ball in the business due to their combination of tour quality performance and bright colors. They are the only manufacturer in the world currently making a 4-piece tour quality golf ball in Orange, Green and Pink and one of a few making a tour ball in Yellow. If you have watched any LPGA Tour events in the last couple of years you have probably noticed that there is a color golf ball revolution happening out there, thanks to the good folks at Volvik. In 2013 on the LPGA Tour, Volvik had 195 total instances of professionals using their Vista golf balls in tournament play (77 Orange, 71 Yellow, 44 Pink and 3 Green). This made Volvik as high as the #3 most played golf ball last year on the LPGA Tour. And all of those golf balls have been of the colored variety. Already in a very short amount of time Volvik has penetrated the PGA TOUR and will have a ball in play at the Masters, a giant feat for a growing golf ball brand in the US market. Volvik is now in play on the PGA TOUR, Champions and Web.com Tour. After the 2013 season Volvik signed PGA TOUR winner and Masters champion Craig Stadler, 3-time major champion Larry Nelson and PGA TOUR winner Tim Petrovic. Stadler played the Vista iV 4-piece golf ball at the Masters, including a Green golf ball at the Par 3 event. He and son Kevin are the first father-son tandem to ever play at the Masters, garnering huge exposure for Volvik and making history in the process. Tim Petrovic has a Top 10 finish on the

Web.com Tour and Top 15 finish on the PGA TOUR so far in 2014 with playing the new White Color S3 golf ball and also set a record for being the first PGA TOUR player to play two different colors in an event, which he did so this year at the Zurich Classic, an event he won on the PGA TOUR in 2005. Petrovic increased his driving accuracy by 12.5% over his 2013 average and bested his other 2014 PGA Tour event driving distance average with another golf ball by 18.8 yards in his first event playing a Volvik golf ball. Larry Nelson, a 3-time major winner, plays an Orange Yellow Vista iV and gained 20- yards on his drives when he switched to the ball, the company reports. Nelson loves the fact that he can see the ball easier, which he attributes to better ball striking and more efficient course management. “Initially we have made our name on

In the last 2 LPGA Tour seasons, players using Volvik color golf balls have earned 1 Victory,5 Runner Up’s, 18 Top 5 finishes, 27 Top 10 finishes and 76 Top 25 finishes on the LPGA Tour. This is out of 38 LPGA events. This means Volvik is averaging a Top 5 in 47% of events, a Top 10 in 71% of events and is averaging 2 Top 25 finishes per event played. The airtime Volvik players equates to an estimated $4 Million in airtime exposure, helping Volvik Company grow at a very fast rate! Volvik golf balls have not come out of nowhere. Volvik has been manufacturing golf balls for 30 years and is the #2 overall ball in Korea and #4 in Japan for market share. They also have 37 international patents on their golf balls, 12 patents alone on their 4-piece Vista iV ball. Five years ago, Volvik went through a change and re-branded itself as a high-end 3-piece and 4-piece ball manufacturer. Since 2006, Volvik has gained more market share than

mal spin generated by the more solid inner core creates longer distance off the driver and long irons the spin increases closer to the green due to the firm outer core, producing higher spin for total control and the ability to stop on a dime on the green. Most other companies feature a soft inner core with a harder outer layer. Volvik’s secret is they do the opposite, a solid inner core combined with a soft outer layer. On the outside cover of the golf ball, Volvik uses Zirconium, the base material for ceramic. It improves the durability of a golf ball cover without sacrificing spin control. Volvik also has 15 worldwide patents on their 492, 432, 446, 392 and 350 dimple pattern technology. “We are making golf balls fun and bringing personality back to the golf ball,” said Claffey.”But we are doing it a little differently in that the balls we make are very high quality. We manufacture our balls differently and we spend more money on our materials. We do this all to make sure

Volvik would like to wish all Dads out there a happy Father’s Day and they are now offering Free Shipping and Personalization on www.Shop.Volvik.Com the LPGA Tour, which has been huge for us, but now some of the biggest names on the Champions Tour and PGA TOUR are starting to see the benefits of a color golf ball,” said Volvik’s National Director of Sales and Marketing Jon Claffey. “Color is the future of golf and we are at the forefront of the color revolution with our high-performance color golf balls. To have now been in play on the PGA TOUR with Petro, at the Masters with Craig Stadler and to have a legend like Larry Nelson playing an Orange Volvik, we feel like we have truly arrived and have the ability to grow this into a phenomenon on tour and with the amateur golfer. It wasn’t that any one was really against playing a color, it’s that there wasn’t a true tour quality golf ball available in the different colors” Volvik’s tagline is The #1 Color Golf Ball on Tour and they are focusing attention on their niche on the surging color golf ball market. With the help of tour validation, Volvik is helping golfers everywhere realize that it’s OK to bring color to their game. “Golfers traditionally follow what they see in play on tour,” said Claffey. “Color golf balls had wide support in the ‘80s when Jerry Pate won with an Orange golf ball. That went away because the tour play dwindled. Now that we have broken down that barrier, we have seen a huge sea change in golfers wanting to play a color golf ball.” Florida Golf Central • Volume 15, Issue 2

any other company in golf anywhere in the world. Volvik signed a stable of tour professionals to help bolster their credibility. They also have found their niche in the golf market as the highest quality color golf balls on the market. “We have all the earmarks to be the next new big brand in golf,” said Claffey. “We have the tour story, we have the #1 claim, we have the performance, we have the right golf ball for every skill level and we have the fashion and increased visibility golfers are looking for today. We also have the brightest colors in golf, which helps us stand out on the tour telecasts.” The vibrant colors aren’t the only thing setting Volvik apart. The way Volvik makes their golf balls is the secret to their performance success stories and the reason they have fared so well with the LPGA Tour players. Volvik has perfected a technology to enhance resistance to wind and added elasticity to their golf balls to make them fly further and more accurately. Volvik balls are strenuously tested and Volvik uses higher grade materials to provide unmatched durability and to maximize energy transfer, resulting in greater distance. What Volvik really does to change the feel of the golf ball and performance characteristics is to combine a solid inner core encased in a softer casing that provides the optimal spin separation and optimizes the balance of both distance and control. Opti-

we have top-shelf performance. There’s no way we could have so many tour players using our colorful balls if we didn’t have one of the best out there.” Volvik would like to wish all Dads out there a happy Father’s Day and they are now offering Free Shipping and Personalization on www.Shop.Volvik.Com.

Wine! Naturally...

grip it & sip it

By Chris Thompson

La Cappuccina Winery

There are many of buzz words in the ether these days where wine is concerned; Organic, Natural, Biodynamic, and even Gluten-Free wine. These terms refer to keeping wine and the wine making practice as “uncontaminated” as possible. Wine producers in these categories reduce the use of sulfites, which is used to help stabilize and preserve wine, to a minimum and eliminate the use of chemical additives and pesticides altogether, using only natural fungicides such as Copper and Sulfur to treat their vineyards. They promote the use of natural biodiversity in the vineyards, using certain grasses and “green manure” (types of flowers and legumes that help fix free nitrogen in the soils) between the rows of vines, which brings bees and lady bugs which in turn helps to eliminate insect pests that can destroy entire crops of grapes. One such winery in the hills east Verona in Italy is La Cappuccina, an 4th generation enterprise which is owned and operated by the Tessari Family. Since 1985 La Cappuccina, one of the pioneers of this movement, has been working their vineyards Organically and have been on a path to increas-

ing dynamic farming and winemaking practices to maintain the purity of their wines and vineyards. In the words of Sisto Tessari, the Agronomist of La Cappuccina Winery, “we live and work in our vineyards, why would we want to poison them.” Though La Cappuccina produces a full array of high quality wines from dry, still, sweet and sparkling, their mainstay is their Soave D.O.C. from the Garganega grape. Soave itself is sometimes known as a light white floral wine of little distinction due to the prolific yields of the Garganega grape if left unchecked. However, La

Dooks Golf Club Celebrating its 125th Anniversary in 2014 Dooks Golf Club – the best-kept secret in Irish golf – is celebrating its 125th anniversary in 2014. One of the Emerald Isle’s 10 oldest golf clubs, Dooks is home to an 18-hole links course along rugged Dingle Bay in County Kerry. Deriving its name from the Irish word for “dunes,” the fun, player-friendly track boasts Atlantic Ocean views from nearly every hole. Framed by Ireland’s highest mountain range, the McGillycuddy Reeks, Dooks’ gently rolling site is awash with natural beauty. “Golfers worldwide are invited to celebrate with us and see why we’re so proud of our ‘Friendly Dooks’ nickname,” says Michelle McGreevy, General Manager. “There will be an extra-enthusiastic welcome in 2014, with a host of special events and promotions at the club.” These activities are outlined on the club’s newly-revamped, tablet and mobile-friendly website, www.dooks. com, as well as its Facebook page. To further commemorate the anniversary, guests are encouraged to inquire about 50%-off replay rates and overseas memberships. A nine-hole layout for most of its first 80 years, it was expanded to 18 in 1970. The most recent renovations were completed by renowned golf course architect Martin Hawtree in 2006, elevating Dooks to “must play” status like neighbors Ballybunion and Tralee. Hawtree, whose resume includes acclaimed make overs of Lahinch and Royal Dublin, rebuilt all bunkers, relocated tees and fairways, and shaped 16 new greens – 10 in new locations. A sporty par 71 measuring 6,586 yards from the back tees, Dooks is now a fairer test of golf that still drips with trademark charm. Despite the relatively modest 46

yardage, the course record is just 70. Ever-present southwest winds put a premium on the ground game and proper shot trajectory. Numerous greenside collection areas await mis-hit approaches and compel imaginative bumps, chips and pitches to get upand-down. Memorable holes abound. Number four is a spectacular beachside par 3. The 489-yard par-4 7th is statistically the toughest test, playing through a chute of dunes to an undulating green.

And the 173-yard 11th endearingly features humps and hollows molded by sheep that still drift over from a nearby field as informal members of the grounds crew. After a few holes that are more parkland than links in character, the 17th and 18th return to the dunes and play into the prevailing wind. Seventeen is a straight 400-yarder with an elevated tee and out of bounds down the entire left side. The finisher is 426 yards with white chimneys of distant houses marking the ideal line. Post-renovation, the second shot can now trundle along the firm-and-fast turf to find the putting surface. “With our magical course, unparalleled hospitality, superb restaurant, and quaint, traditional bar, Dooks is the quintessential Irish golf experience,” adds McGreevy. “Come see why we’re a ‘can’t miss’ on any southwest Ireland golf itinerary.” For more information: www.dooks.com, +353 (0)66 9768205.

Grass that reminds me of home… Esplanade Golf & Country Club at Lakewood Ranch is one of the newest community developments and golf courses in Lakewood Ranch. Lakewood Ranch is in the Sarasota/Bradenton area and boasts some of the finest golf courses in West/Central Florida. Esplanade is an excellent addition to those ranks. Early this spring I was playing another one of the Sarasota/Manatee County’s fine golf courses when a couple of gentlemen I was paired up with shared their experience on this new course, found snuggled into a Taylor Morrison community development managed by Pope Golf, and it intrigued me enough that I decided to reach out to Aaron Dressel, the Head Golf Professional and schedule a tee time. It’s always fun to be one of the first people to experience a new golf course and this was no exception. One of the things I immediately noticed was that the grass was very similar to what I grew up playing on in Central Illinois. You know, the kind of grass, that if you are off the fairway, the ball likes to nestle down to the bottom of the blades of grass, and you better take an extra club to “whack/hack it” out of there. Having 50

such fond memories wash over me I quickly decided it was a day to keep the ball in the fairway and enjoy the sunny, breezy 85 degree weather. The course measures 6756 yards from the tips, and since it was windy and a new experience I decided to use the next set of tees, which measured only 6157 yards. I know, some of you may call “wimpy, wimpy, wimpy”, but there wasn’t anything in-between, and why brutalize yourself if you don’t have to. It quickly became apparent that my natural draw (sometimes mistaken as a hard hook) would come in handy on this course. Many of the first few holes were a dogleg left, which confounded my fellow players, but I just grinned and said, “Oh, that’s a shame”. The front 9 starts with a straight forward slight dogleg right, followed by a 499 yard 2nd hole, with a snaking dogleg and water on the left. The course has several water features and enough sand traps to keep you honest. The 4th hole, a 152 yard par 3 has a very beautiful stadium effect with multi-color flowers surrounding the green. The 5th hole, a 486 yard par 5 sounds easy, but you better be able to thread a needle off the tee box

and your second shot. I was happy to walk away with a par on the 5th, after nearly being on in 2. I finished with 3 straight pars on the front and headed off to the back 9 hoping to score a bit better than the 41 I carded on the front. The back 9 started well, with a birdie on the slight dogleg right par 4. The wind started to kick up a bit and the back nine had some tougher pin placements. The par 3 12th has a table top green, that drains off the back, which caused me some pain (double bogie 5). The 17th is a very visually challenging par 5, with water left off the tee and right at the green. I pare’d three of the last 4 holes, but couldn’t hold myself down to anything better than a 42. After a very enjoyable 18 holes we retreated to the cozy clubhouse for a cool beverage and talked about wanting to come back and play it again. Always a good sign of a challenging, but fun golf course. If you would like to arrange a tee time, call the Pro Shop at (941) 306-3500, or visitmwww.popegolf.net for more information. For information about housing opportunities around this beautiful course, call (941) 799-5496, or visit www.taylormorrison.com. Florida Golf Central • Volume 15, Issue 2

Gene Fieger

SFPGA Member Gene Fieger is the 2013 Senior PGA Professional National Champion Gene Fieger, PGA Director of Golf at the Hideout Golf Club, won the 25th Southworth Senior PGA Professional National Championship presented by Mercedes-Benz. Fieger won by six strokes by finishing with a 72-hole total of 13-under par 275. Fieger is the fifth South Florida PGA Section member to win the event. The Championship took place in Port St. Lucie at PGA Golf Club. Originally, it was supposed to be held in northern Virginia, but was postponed due to a week of heavy rain last October. “I don’t play too many four-round tournaments, but this was a thrill,” said Fieger, whose best previous Championship performance was a tie for 15th in 2010. “I broke 70 all four rounds. In this wind, that’s really an accomplishment. I felt at home all four days, and I’ve played here a lot. You get the lead and you just try to get the ball in the fairway and on the green. That’s what I tried to do most of the day. Except for a little stumble in the middle, I hit some great chip shots. It was thrilling.” Twelve SFPGA PGA Professionals competed in the Senior PGA Professional National Championship: Peter Beringer, Chris Campbell, Gene Fieger, Jerry Impellittiere, Jim Karr, Ken Martin, Ric Nalyd, Pete Oakley, Brian Peaper, Lee Rinker, Jim Traub and Jerry Tucker. Fieger, along with Lee Rinker and Jerry Impellittiere, finished in the top35 and will move onto the 75th Senior PGA Championship, May 22-25, at Harbor Shores in Benton Harbor, Mich. 56

The First Tee of Central Florida Participant Christion McBride Selected for Life Skills and Leadership Academy in San Diego

The First Tee of Central Florida Receives USGA Regional Chapter Award

The First Tee of Central Florida has been recognized as a USGA 2013 Regional Chapter Award recipient. As one of only two First Tee chapters nationally to be selected for the award, The First Tee of Central Florida received a $15,000 to continue to develop chapter programs. As part of the USGA Regional Chapter Awards program, the United States Golf Association continues its longtime commitment to The First Tee through chapter grants. The First Tee home office (in St. Augustine, Fla.) administers the USGA grants to The First Tee chapters based substantially on criteria established by the USGA as being important to their organization. The First Tee Regional Chapter Award is awarded annually to relatively newer chapters in The First Tee network that will benefit from additional assistance to take their programs to the next level of performance. The First Tee of Central Florida is a youth development organization that uses golf as a tool to teach young people the positive values inherent in the game such as honesty, integrity, sportsmanship and confidence. The grant will be used toward furthering programs that impact the lives of area youth through the game of golf. “We were thrilled to be named as a USGA Regional Chapter Award recipient, knowing that our efforts to continue to develop the Central Florida chapter are so strongly supported by the larger golf community,” said Thomas Lawrence, Executive Director of The First Tee of Central Florida. “Every dollar helps us bring the valuable life lessons learned through golf to more young people, helping us change lives and communities.” 62

Each year, The First Tee recognizes

ness, Christion has overcome a lot to become the golfer he is today. He has a condition that causes congenital joint contractures, making it difficult to flex joints. As one can imagine, this has made gripping the club a challenge for him. But no one has ever heard Christion utter one complaint on the course, choosing instead to exhibit a positive attitude and graciousness for the ability to participate in the program. “Christion’s determination and perseverance are inspiring not only to our kids, but to the coaches and volunteers as well,” said Thomas Lawrence, Executive Director of The First Tee of Central Florida. “Although it is difficult for him at times, coaches and volunteers have never heard Christion complain about walking the golf course, and he prefers to be treated like all of the other participants in all of the activities we do.”

Bonita Springs Elementary School students treated to a Bonita Bay field trip

Fifth-graders Pamela Cruz-Martinez, 11, and Deacon Salek-Hazel, 12, maintain a respectful distance from a gopher tortoise.

Bonita Springs Elementary School fifth-graders toured Bonita Bay on the Nature Wagon.

Bonita Bay Club and Bonita Bay Community Association hosted 22 fifthgraders from Bonita Springs Elementary School for a day of exploring the parks, mangroves, marina, golf courses and other areas of the 2,400-acre master-planned community. “The students were exposed to a range of disciplines from botany and archeology to land planning and golf course maintenance,” said Teacher Zachary Schroeder. “They were able to interact with adults in a variety of professions and to see how Bonita Bay blends homes and recreational amenities with nature and preserved areas.” The students toured the community in the open-air Bonita Bay Club Nature Wagon. Bonita Bay resident and nature photographer Maryle Barbé served as tour guide, pointing out birds, wildlife and plant species. The fifth-graders walked through mangroves and along shell mounds to a pier that extends into Estero Bay. They visited the rooftop terrace at the 26-story Tavira highrise for a bird’s-eye view of the community, which is bordered by Spring Creek, Estero Bay, Imperial River and U.S. 41. They visited Bonita Bay’s waterfront parks and rode along golf course cart paths. They learned about the bald eagle pair that nests in the community each year, and each student released a butterfly in the resident-created butterfly garden. Bonita Bay Club and Bonita Bay Community Association joined forces 64

to plan and sponsor the daylong tour, including transportation from and to the school and lunch in Estero Bay Park. Bonita Bay, founded in the mid1980s, is celebrated for its environmental stewardship, award-winning landscaping, creative land use and the philanthropic efforts and civic contributions of its 3,000-plus residents. More than half of the Bonita Springs community’s 2,400 acres is devoted to open space including lakes, natural preserve areas and 12 miles of biking and walking paths. With two clubhouses, an 18-court tennis and swim center, a fitness cen-

ter and 90 holes of championship golf, Bonita Bay Club offers a wider range of amenities than any other club in Southwest Florida. Golf options include three Arthur Hills-designed courses within the community and two Tom Fazio courses that provide a pure golf experience at Bonita Bay Club Naples. The club was established in 1985, and members took ownership in 2010. Bonita Bay Community Association has maintained its commitment to strong environmental stewardship and ecological preservation since its inception in 1985. The association was turned over to the community’s residents in 2011.

2014 Inter-Club Challenge Raises $151,268 for Immokalee Youth Philanthropic foursomes from nine of Southwest Florida’s most prestigious communities, golf clubs and The Immokalee Foundation corporate sponsors, along with local club golf pros, recently gathered at The Old Collier Golf Club in Naples to participate in the 2014 Inter-Club Challenge, a lively golf tournament that pits local golf clubs against each other in a friendly rivalry to support a brighter future for the children of Immokalee through The Immokalee Foundation’s education programs. The eighth annual tournament raised $151,268 to benefit Immokalee’s youth. The tournament included 19 foursomes from area country clubs along with area club golf pros. At day’s end, the Bay Colony team was overall team champions and both the men’s and ladies’ winning teams were from The Old Collier Golf Club. The overall team champions from Bay Colony were Joyce Hagen Fites, Don Fites, Carol Lund, Tom Lund with golf pro Jeff Raimer. The winning men’s team included Clint Harkins, Rick Zona, Dick Stonesifer and Nick Trigony, with pro Steve Waugh. The women’s winning team was Carrie Scanell, Rene Zona, Eileen Golden and Ann Bain, with golf pro Brian Yarusevich. Closestto-the-pin winners were Harry Rose, Mediterra; Mike Lyons, Bonita Bay; Skip Hildebrand, Mediterra; and Alice Sanneman, The Old Collier Golf Club. The team from Bonita Bay, consisting

Heather Martinez, Alan Cuevas, Rolby Seneus, Kelley Anzualda, Luis Parra, Charity Gonzales, Elijah Arreaga

of Don Boudreau, Bob Herdman, John Howard, Mike Lyons and pro Rick Nalyd, was the winner of the putting contest. Kevin Johnson, a TIF board member and member of the Inter-Club committee, was pleased with the event, “The day was awesome. Course conditions were great and we had fun playing.” Most importantly though, was the reason they were all there, “The Inter-Club Challenge provides the unique opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of Immokalee students by giving them the chance to advance themselves socially, civically, economically and academically through TIF programs.” A team of TIF students, consisting of Alan Cuevas, Charity Gonzalez, Heather Martinez and Rolby Seneus, played as a foursome alongside PGA Professional Mark Fogg. The tournament allowed the students the opportunity to interact with their benefactors and pro golfers. Cuevas, a junior at Immokalee High School and a TIF Take Stock in Children student, not only enjoyed playing in the tournament, but also appreciates the lessons gained through golf, “Golf teaches you patience, builds communication skills and is a great way to network.”

For the TIF supporters, having the opportunity to meet the students whose lives they are directly impacting is often their favorite part of the annual tournament. “Through TIF, we are giving kids the opportunity to have a career and solid education,” Johnson said. “Seeing how they’ve have grown and matured each year is such a good feeling.” David Call, a member of the TIF board of directors, appreciates that TIF “takes care of a lot of people. Immokalee.” Michael Benson, 2014 Inter-Club Challenge chair and TIF board member, is happy to be part of an organization that is making a big different in a community that needs help, “The Immokalee Foundation is a phenomenal, results-oriented organization. One hundred percent of the 700 plus students in the program have graduated.” The Inter-Club Challenge is the first in a series of annual fundraising events aimed to build pathways to success for the children of Immokalee. TIF’s largest fundraiser of the year, the 2014 Charity Classic Celebration, is slated for Nov. 14 at The Ritz Carlton Beach Resort, Naples. The Charity Classic Pro-Am tournament

Ben Hogan's Tips for Weekend Golfers – Simple Advice to Improve Your Game By Ted Hunt Ben Hogan made hitting golf balls look easy, but his “swing system” was as complex as a spider’s web, and his advice not much clearer. (“Twist and arch”! “Swing the towel”!) Ted Hunt, who’s shared the green with golfers like Stan Leonard, George Knudson, and Moe Norman, breaks down the Hawk’s legendary technique in Ben Hogan’s Tips for Weekend Golfers: Simple Advice to Improve Your Game (Skyhorse Publishing, June 2014), so you too can swing like Bantam Ben. The book is intended for the recreational golfer, not the tournament player with unlimited practice time. It distills Hogan’s observations concerning the vital components of a golf swing—one at a time—and presents them as simply as possible. (And for those with a little more time, the book includes follow-up exercises.) Hunt’s last tip—“the nucleus of [Hogan’s] swing secret”—would surprise even a seasoned pro! Each tip is illustrated with a series of photographs that illustrate proper grip, stance, backswing, and follow-through. Many competitive golfers and professional instructors still can’t agree on what Hogan’s secret was. But with these tips, you can unlock the answer for yourself, even if you’re just playing Sunday afternoons!
