Ain’t No Stopping Us Now!

It Looks Like Things Are Finally Coming Around I might have said this before but, “Ain’t no stopping us now! We got the groove, we’re on the move!” Ladies and gents, this year so far has been one full of growth and achievement. My focus is all about the people, this publication, a new brand, Turf Life, which is so bloody exciting, and the folks who we strive to reach daily. The reason we’re on the groove is because of my Editor-in-Chief Shannon Coates. When Shannon got here, 13 years ago, she had never played golf. She knew squadoosh about the sport and now she knows literally everything and everyone there is to know, and more importantly they know her. Under my tutelage, she is barely hitting over 200 (I’m a great golf instructor by the way). Bringing new people to the game is what my legacy needs to be, because that’s what I enjoy. The fact that Shannon and I have been working together for 13 years now, and have done so successfully, is an achievement that many can’t relate to. I couldn’t be more honored and satisfied by her work and dedication to this publication. Her undying loyalty after all these years is where the true greatness is rooted. Thanks to her for unwavering support along with endless laughter and crazy fun. Speaking of thanks, I am truly grateful for my new hire, my CCD. In case you guys are wondering what that means, it’s a sassy new title that invented. Well here it is, I would like to introduce my Coordinating Communications Diva, Jasmin Smith. And be nice to her, she’s a beginner golfer. Ok, take it from here Jas. Hey everyone! My name is Jasmin Smith and I am the Coordinating Communications Diva (marinate on that for a moment) for Southern Golf Central Magazine and TURF LiFE. I am a Senior at the University of South Florida studying Communications and Psychology, which I can already see is going to helpful working with this crew. GO BULLS! I am so excited to be a part of a company that has a focus outside of the game of golf. The fact that we are in the business of reaching and educating is enough for me to dive in head first. I am new to golf and I will admit a little nervous to start playing, however I’m not afraid because I know that I will be welcomed to the sport as Terrie and the team have already displayed. Just keep your eyes peeled if you see me out there (I’ve been taught me when to yell “FORE” so I got that part covered). Be on the lookout for us at these events, The World Amateur in Myrtle Beach, Necker Open in Sea Island, The Barbasol Championship, and Shepard’s Hope in Reunion, FL, just 2009 North Florida PGA Amateur of the Year to name a few.

South Florida Club Managers’ Golf Tourney Florida’s Seminole Region of the CMAA (Club Managers Association of America) recently held the 25th annual Best Ball Golf Tournament at Boca West Country Club. The event raised approximately $600,000, of which over $155,000 was donated by Marathon Golf, now in its fifth year as part of the charity tourney. Teams representing country clubs, businesses and everyday golfer reserved a day to play as many holes as possible at one of several participating country clubs in the area with pledges made for each hole. The Marathon Golf portion of the event started in April while over 400 golfers participated the June 7th Best Ball tournament. The entire event culminated with a spectacular gala at Boca West where over 800 guests, sponsors and donors celebrated this amazing fund-raising

This year’s gala theme was “Memory Lane,” this being the 25th anniversary of this event. The Grand Ballroom took everyone down Memory Lane with gourmet food stations around the room staged as settings of vintage TV shows underscored by live music from the same era. As virtually everything for this event is donated, all of the money is given to the charities that include Toys for Tots, The Special Olympics, SOS Children’s Villages, The George Snow Scholarship Fund, The Unicorn Children’s Foundation, Florence Fuller Child Development Centers and The First Tee of the Palm Beaches. During a presentation ceremony at the gala, Jay DiPietro, CCM, tournament chairman and manager of Boca West Country Club, noted, “Our chapter 10

Meanwhile, Gary Collins, CCM, principal of Master Club Advisors and Marathon Golf committee chairman added, “It was a fantastic year for Marathon Golf – more teams, more money and more fun! The stamina, energy, generosity and commitment of the Marathon Golfers were incredible. All told, a total of 5,480 holes of Marathon Golf were played, with many golfers sinking their putts well into the night. Established in 1927, the CMAA is the oldest association for the club management profession with over 7,000 members representing virtually every kind of club, from golf and tennis to yachting, beach, social and military. Sport Haley Spring- Summer 2015

The Spring - Summer 2015 collection is influenced by gardens, flowers and vibrant color. Each of the five groupings has its own personality, but pieces are interchangeable within each group and beyond. The traditional, but updated elements of Viola Vineyards; the modern, athletic and graphic pieces from Clover Lane; the feminine and floral Petal Path line; and, the classic look of bright blue and white in the Burchfield create a timeless, varied,

22

but cohesive Spring 2015 collection. The beautiful florals, bold graphics and simple geometric patterns each have a place in a woman’s wardrobe. Silhouettes are streamlined with clean and crisp lines, and the colors, tex-

tures, prints and patterns take center stage. Haley, the brands’ signature owl, is thoughtfully placed as embroidery, zipper pulls or decorative touches throughout. The attention to detail in Sport Haley clothing speaks to the fine quality the brand is known for. Fabrics for Spring - Summer 2015 are lighter and more technical overall. Sport Haley’s signature fabric, Haley Cool, is superior in performance and has inherent cooling yarns so the fabric not only has wicking properties, but also is cool to the touch. With a UPF 30 and a slight texture, it is the perfect performing fabric. The Sport Haley Boutique also offers lifestyle pieces with a touch of glamour. Andy Scott School of Golf Located in the Sunshine State, the Andy Scott School of Golf is no stranger to the quick-growing golf scene. The Andy Scott School of Golf laid its roots in Southwest Florida in 2012, and PGA Professional Andy Scott has not looked back since. The Andy Scott School of Golf operates out of several locations in Southwest Florida, offering private instruction, group lessons, golf clinics, corporate programs, and junior camps year round. Director of Instruction, Andy Scott, is a familiar name to most in the area, after being named 2012 PGA Teacher of the Year of the South Florida Section, and 2010 and 2014 PGA Instructor of the Year in Southwest Florida. Andy Scott also currently works with several up-andcoming professional players, including Chase Marinell, PGA Tour Canada player, and five-time winner on the West Florida Golf Tour; and David Mobley, two-time REMAX World Long Drive Champion, fan-favorite on the Golf Channel’s Big Break Dominican Republic, and aspiring Champions’ Tour competitor. Students of Andy Scott have also found suc-

cess at a collegiate level, as Andy has helped 26 junior golfers on their journeys to attaining NCAA Scholarships. Recently, the Andy Scott School of Golf announced that it would be hosting three-day Elite Preparation Camps for both aspiring college and professional golfers. Spearheaded by Andy Scott and his team of Lead PGA Instructor Brian Newman, and Titleist Performance Institute Certified Instructor Darin Hovis, each camp aims to expose students to all necessary steps needed

24

to prepare for a career in NCAA Collegiate Golf, or as a professional golfer. The Florida College-Preparation Elite Golf Camp offers prospective college and professional golfers the opportunity to spend three full days with professionals who have backgrounds and experience in every facet of the game. Two camps remain for the month of July, and will run from July 10 – 12, and July 17 – 19. All camps include accommodations at nearby Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU), professional instructional programs, fitness assessments, video analysis, 3-D motion analysis, meals, camp memorabilia, guest speakers and more! Each camp will also be limited to twelve individuals, allowing for a more private and elite training experience. Leading up to the Elite Preparation Camps, the Andy Scott School of Golf held a Birdie-A-Thon fundraiser, in an attempt to create scholarships for students who would otherwise not be able to attend the camp. This year, the foursome of Andy Scott, Brian Newman, Darin Hovis, and FGCU PGA Golf Management Intern Cathleen Wong managed to card an impressive 15-under, recording thirteen birdies and one eagle at Stoneybrook Golf Club in Estero. In previous years, these scholarships have helped 10 students to full and partial aid for the camps. Ross Lally, 2013 Scholarship Recipient, shares his experience, “On May 17, 2013, the biggest thing in my life happened when my one true coach and mentor passed away – My father. He has a short battle with cancer. My dad was always interested in my golf game, and always trying to help me improve. When Andy Scott, PGA, came

to me telling me about the camp, I was very interested, but with what had happened with my father, we were financially stressed and could not [afford] to go. Andy understood our situation and told my mom and I that he could help; and I was so excited because I knew I could really get a lot of our the opportunity”. Apart from golf instruction, the Andy Scott School of Golf also offers golf-specific fitness classes, and will be teaming up with Around the Clock Fitness to launch an exciting new program in the near future. Headed by Brian Newman, Golf Fitness X (GFX) is a sport-specific training program, tailored to golfers who are looking to improve their golf game and their golf body at the same time. With a structured golf fitness program, a golfer would be able to look towards: • Increased strength and stability formore distance and accuracy • Increased flexibility for injury prevention • Increased endurance necessary to play 18 holes of golf • Heightened focus without becoming overly exhausted during practice or during a round of golf The Andy Scott School of Golf provides golf instruction at Stoneybrook Golf Club in Estero, and at Palmetto Pines Country Club in Cape Coral. Additionally, the school will also begin offering Golf Fitness X classes at Around the Clock Fitness (Alico Location and Boy Scout Location) on Monday, July 6, 2015.

Makenna and Morgan

Rodriguez As these two diminutive Olympic

golfers transcend to super stardom, all eyes are fixed on them. What’s next for Makenna and Morgan Rodriguez, the Palm Beach County’s sibling sweethearts of golf? The phenom Morgan, according to Esquire network continues to dominate her age division. Her sister Makenna is consistently gaining experience as she carves out a path establishing her dream of golf stardom. The sisterhood began their golf tournament reign in February 2013, placing in the top five for their first few tournaments. Morgan is credited with an impressive 1st place win at the 2013 & 2014 PARS Florida International Junior Tournament, 2nd place at the 2014 US Kids Jekyll Island Tournament, and 2nd place at the US Kids Seaview Open 2014, 1st place at the 2014 DoralPublix Golf Classic at Trump National Doral, and 1st place at the 2014 Junior Honda Classic at PGA National. She participated in the 2014 Drive, Chip & Putt and won 1st place for the Regional Drive and 3rd place for Regional Putt. Morgan in 2014 has won 1st place in over 25 US Kids tournaments. She is the US Kids 2014 Local Fall Tour Champion, West Palm Beach and topped it off when she became the 2014 Regional Champion, US Kids PGA Golf Club Invitational, 1st Place at The Little (BIG) Break given by Don Law Golf Academy at Osprey Point Golf Course and 1st place at The Parent Child US Kids Holiday Classic shooting a 68 with her father Benjamin Rodriguez. Morgan broke her tour record by shooting 34-31 with an Eagle to take home 1st Place at the 2015 US Kids Golf Jekyll Island Cup. She was honored at the Honda Classic for winning the Jr. 26

Honda Classic in her age division. Makenna, won 4th place at the 2013 PARS Florida International Junior Tournament, 3rd place in two 2014 South Florida PGA events at The Club at Emerald Hills and Wycliff Golf & Country Club. She received 1st place Championships over 20 times in US Kids local tournaments in 2014. She accomplished an outstanding win when she triumphed and clinched the US Kids 2014 Local Fall Tour Championship and 1st Place at the 2015 Gold Coast Junior Golf Foundation in Country Club of Miami. This dynamic sibling duo has to their credit over 20 US Kids Golf Tournament simultaneous wins in 2014. The wins occurred in the same tournaments with each girl winning their age division.

The latest scoop is Team Rodriguez is establishing a clothing Empire and we hear they have set up a Kingdom. The Princesses Makenna and Morgan have gained quite a bit of territory and are driven to conquer this domain. They told me it’s no different from golf, you have to be determined and never give in or give up and you’ll rule and reign! These aspiring super stars are winners on and off the greens attired in Kiss Couture apparel. The dynamic duo created their clothing company for diva fashion forward golf girls. The sisters are bent on making every girl a winner on the course with the greens as their runway. The sisterhood designs most of the clothing in the collection. Kissi Couture is exclusively for kids and by kids. We consider ourselves unique in a “niche” market. The Rodriguez Sisters are entrepreneurs, junior golf champions and straight A students in school. The sky is the limit for these two, “Millennial Global Titans”. Southern Golf Central • Volume 16, Issue 3

freddy's fairway thoughts

Mid-Summer Musings... • Yes, the PGA is going back to Kiawah Island but there’s some good news, too. The only road in and out will be expanded by tournament time in 2021. The timeline of South Carolina road expansions often change from announcement to completion but this promise comes from the folks who represent the Goodwin family, which bought the resort in 2013. • Not-so-good news from Ponte Vedra Beach. Still no solution to the Players traffic mess, caused by just TWO roads in and out. Latest hope is that ”dynamic” pricing will encourage more to come Thursday and Sunday rather than high-volume Friday and Saturday. • Recently visited with a consultant from a company that advises private clubs and he says the worst may be yet to come … for some. Only what he terms the “A-list” private clubs have had the resources to keep their infrastructure in reasonable shape since the financial downturn which started around 2006. The others deferred maintenance: the B list is at risk, but should be able to play catch-up, but the C-list — you know who you are — is in danger because they haven’t had the money to keep their facilities in shape.

• Some clubs still play the way golf was way back when. For instance, the super-prestigious Chicago Golf Club won’t let its superintendent plant flowers. Didn’t have them when they opened in 1894, don’t have them now. • PGA Tour events are becoming more corporate than you might like, and their customers come from odd places. For instance, Team Texas is the development arm of that state’s government and they bought a hospitality package for the Players. Why? The business owners that they’re trying to solicit said they’d like go to Florida for a change. • You remember Peter Kuchar as his son Matt’s caddie in the 1997 U.S. Amateur, and the flap about the claims he was rattling pocket change while others were putting. He’s still in Ponte Vedra Beach, living in the ultra-private Plantation Country Club and playing well in many events.

• Gerry James is a frequent competitor in Florida PGA events and you may know him as a Senior long-drive champion, but what you don’t know is that he once was a professional wrestler. Wearing the bad guy’s mask, he toured Europe with Andre the Giant. • A lot of guys thought they had a chance to succeed Tim Finchem as PGA Tour commissioner and one was David Pillsbury, who headed the TPC club division. He didn’t make the cut (Jay Monahan is the chosen one) so he’s now with a company in the health care industry. • Add another good golf name to Northeast Florida. We’ve had Craig Shankland around for quite a while; now we have Ryan Parr. He’s head pro at The Palencia Club in St. Augustine. • If you want to show that you’re high-end, get charging stations for Tesla cars. You’ll find two at the spiffy Keswick Hall in Charlottesville, Va. • Sergio Garcia’s unhappiness on Sunday of the Players wasn’t just losing a playoff. He was visibly upset at a group of drunks who chanted “USA USA” at him. And yes, he mentioned “Ryder Cup” to them. • Some confusion at PGA Tour headquarters when they had to deal with the British Open folks at the seemingly odd URL of www.randa.com. Finally figured it out: Royal and Ancient. • You probably have heard this but maybe not. Q. Now that Tiger Woods and Lindsay Vonn have broken up, what do they have in common? A. They’re both going downhill fast. 28

Leaders of the Jacksonville Area Golf Association take a look at a recent issue of Southern Golf Central Magazine after a recent meeting. The organization is made up of golf clubs in the Northeast Florida area to coordinate schedules and conduct the area’s major events. Taking a look are (from left) President Adair Roberts of Ponte Vedra Inn and Club, director Tina Comstock of Blue Cypress and Treasurer Don Gilmore of North Hampton.

• Better find out about the course you’re playing. Three guys showed up with pull carts at the USGA Senior qualifier at Atlanta’s Cherokee CC. Nope, club doesn’t allow them, they were told. The fellows had to come off the hip for a caddie. • The Donald Ross Society members are coming south in October. They’ll gather in Charlotte to look over Charlotte CC, Myers Park CC and Carolina GC and discuss the master’s work. • Best NFL golfers? Despite getting all the publicity, Tony Romo of Dallas and Ben Roethlisberger of Pittsburgh are nos. 2 and 3, according to a guy who follows the league. Kickers don’t get any p.r. But the pro players say that Josh Scobee of Jacksonville is the best. Southern Golf Central • Volume 16, Issue 3

And They Said... You Can’t Teach an Old Dog a New Trick! David mentioned “Consistency is the key to being good at any sport. Golf is no different. With the alternative swing, consistency improves.” David went on to say that this isn’t just about book sales... “I just want to help people

play more consistent golf and enjoy this great game.” “The A Swing” was released May 12, 2015 and is available through: Barnes & Noble, Golf Locker, iTunes Store, Amazon, Book-A-Million or can be ordered through: www.LeadbetterASwing.com

Well... they were wrong! I recently attended the a clinic presented by David Leadbetter during the release of his new book “The A Swing.” With the “A” being an alternative swing approach as opposed to the traditional swing path. Okay, I was a little skeptical when I arrived, but hearing the concept and thought that this “Alternative” swing was wrapped around... I would have to try the swing “Alternative” to see the difference myself. One of the thing about the aging process, I have been losing yardage and feeling like I was losing it cause I wasn’t as consistent. I think you will be as surprised as I was. After 50 years with a “Traditional” swing... in about a 30 minute session, I felt more confident. “The A Swing” is going to improve my golf in the future. Greg Wise - Southern Golf Central and David Leadbetter... if you hadn’t figured that out by the hat.

Golf Heavyweights Unite for World’s Largest Golf Outing on August 3 Benefitting Wounded Warrior Project America’s leading golf course owners and management companies have joined forces to make the World’s Largest Golf Outing (WLGO) on Monday, August 3 the biggest one-day celebration of golf and charity. Billy Casper Golf, Troon, ClubCorp and Toll Golf – with a collective portfolio of more than 575 golf courses, country clubs and resorts

worldwide – will serve as host site sponsors of the fifth annual event that benefits Wounded Warrior Project. Several National Golf Course Owners Association board members, including President Matt Galvin, will also support the highly emotional event at their respective courses. Since its inception in 2011, the simultaneous golf outing played from New England to Hawaii has raised $2 million for Wounded Warrior Project. Open to all golfers, part of the proceeds and 100% of donations benefit the national organization that honors and empowers injured servicemen and women, as well

their caregivers and families. Individuals and teams of golfers are encouraged to raise additional funds; donations unrelated to playing golf are made at www.worldslargestgolfouting.com/donate. Registration is at www.worldslargestgolfouting.com/register. “Golf’s charitable impact in America is $4 billion annually,” says Peter Hill, Chairman and CEO of Billy Casper Golf, which founded WLGO. “We are grateful to our friends at Troon, ClubCorp and Toll Golf to help make meaningful differences in the lives of wounded warriors, some of whom play in the World’s Largest Golf Outing.” “The 2015 World’s Largest Golf Outing powerfully showcases the golf industry coming together to support a great cause,” says Dana Garmany, Chairman and CEO of Troon. “In joining together, we are helping to make a positive impact on those who have given so much in their service to our country.” Last year 12,100 golfers, including 364 wounded warriors, at 118 courses in 27 states raised more than $887,000 for WWP, the largest amount ever from a

single-day golf event. This topped 2013 when 10,000 golfers raised $735,000. “The event has evolved into an incredible, industry-wide initiative to elevate respect and raise funds for our nation’s heroes,” says Eric Affeldt, President and CEO of ClubCorp. “We are thrilled to collaborate and pool resources to make this year’s outing the best ever.” More information: www. worldslargestgolfouting.com, 703.761.1444; www.woundedwarriorproject.com, 887.832.6997. growing the game

Golf Is Simple – Golf 8.5 Proves It Keep your head down. Don’t sway. Your left arm should stay straight. Bend your knees. Swing from the inside out. Shift your weight. Don’t forget the shoulder turn. Shift your weight back. Hands toward the target during the follow through. Hold your finish. And think about all of those things in a 1.2-second span. Wow. With all that to remember, it is easy to understand why prospective golfers never make it from the lesson tee to the first tee. They become convinced that golf is just too difficult to learn. To that Kay McMahon says “baloney.” The LPGA Hall of Fame in-

president of eduKaytion golf, developed this system to make learning the game of golf fun and simple. Beyond that goal, it could be a teaching system that helps reboot major growth in the game of golf. “There are four pre-swing steps followed by only 4.5 swing positions which produce a classic golf swing for any person of any level,” said McMahon. “Golf 8.5 proves to be easily understandable, simple, doable and highly successful.” McMahon’s students agree with that opinion. “When I was able to find practice

Golf Professional, Stadium Golf Club. “I believe that the traditional way of teaching golf has somewhat worked, yet it seems it causes people to think that ‘golf is hard!’ or that ‘there are too many things to think about or do,’” said McMahon. “When you follow Golf 8.5, the ‘1001 things’ traditionally taught will happen automatically. You no longer have to think about anything else.” McMahon always begins teaching Golf 8.5 by first understanding her student’s goals. After transforming the misconceptions that have probably caused confusion and frustration for years, she then explains ball flight laws and most importantly, provides a clear, easily understood lesson on how the club works. “People tend to focus on the golf ball, but it is the club that is moving,” says McMahon. Golf 8.5 starts from the beginning and allows golfers to understand the how and why. The learning curve is fast-tracked, and by the time students learn the 8.5 things to do to achieve a classic, consistent golf swing, they understand that golf can be a simple sport to learn.

Traditionally posture is taught first with people feeling uncomfortable and looking like pretzels. In Golf 8.5 posture happens automatically. Therefore, we do not have to teach it - it happens.” The Golf 8.5 program is taught using easy to visualize instruction. For example, take the club back thinking of a “Y” formed by the shoulders, arms, hands and shaft. When the club is waist high make an “L” by bending the right elbow and continue turning until the shaft is over the right shoulder. That’s a simple way to de-

Gosling's The Dark ’n Stormy® was invented in the British Mess in Dockyard. The British Navy were big fans of the Gosling’s Black Seal Rum. They made their own ginger beer and mixed the Black Seal rum with the ginger beer to invent the Dark ’n Stormy. The Dark ’n Stormy name is said to come from a sailor once holding the glass aloft the with the Gosling’s Black Seal Rum and ginger beer, and pronouncing it to be “ the colour of a cloud that only a fool or a dead man would sail under”. The timeframe of this cocktail invention by the British Navy is in the early 1920s. This is a trademarked cocktail. Gosling’s has a U.S. Patent Trademark on this cocktail name. The official trademark says that Gosling’s Black Seal Rum must be used in a Dark ’n Stormy cocktail. Everything else is a fake & phony. Not authentic. The reason why it is important to have a trademark for this cocktail is to ensure consistency of the taste of this cocktail. While there are many different ginger beers on the market, the key ingredient is the Black Seal Rum. We would not want any consumers to try a Dark ’n Stormy which does not use 36

the award-winning Black Seal rum and not enjoy it, like it. FYI, Gosling’s Black Seal Rum won the highest award in the industry, the prestigious Platinum Medal, scoring 96 points. And because there are so many different ginger beers on the market we decided a to create and produce the perfectly balanced Gosling’s Stormy Ginger Beer to compliment the flavorful Black Seal to make the ultimate Dark ’n Stormy. While the trademark is just for the Black Seal to be used, we are recommending that everyone try / use the Gosling’s Stormy Ginger Beer for the best tasting drink. The Gosling’s Stormy Ginger Beer has been wildly successful. And is becoming a favorite ginger beer not only for the Dark ’n Stormy but for other cocktails that use ginger beer. The Dark ’n Stormy is a popular cocktail and has become increasingly desired not only in North America, but throughout many international markets. Gosling’s is a 209 year old privately held family business. Run continuously by the Gosling’s family for 7 stubborn generations. Gosling’s is the oldest and largest export product from Bermuda.

Gosling’s Rums Dark ‘n Stormy® Recipe Fill a tall glass with ice, almost fill with ginger beer (ideally Gosling’s Stormy Ginger Beer), add 2 oz. of Gosling’s Black Seal Rum. Lime optional, enjoyment mandatory.

When he was hired in May 2013 to be the golf course superintendent for the Olympic course in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, he initially thought there was plenty of time to get things done. He had tackled start-up golf course constructions in remote areas before many times – Egypt, Dominican Republic and Mexico, to name a few. But nothing had prepared him for the challenges in Rio. “I don’t panic. I am a thinking person,” said Cleverly, a 16-year member of the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America. “But when I saw the equipment I had and the novice workforce I had, I thought, ‘Oh my God, are we really going to do this?’ It has been insane. But I love this job.” Now two years into the job, there is no question in Cleverly’s mind that the golf course will be ready to host an Olympic event in August

Mowing Patterns 101

Head Groundskeeper for the Memphis Redbirds

In the world of sports turf manage-

Straight as an Arrow

ment, few have mastered the art of mowing patterns. Sculpting a field with unique designs is truly a craft that requires patience, dedication and a detailed game plan. As the Sports Turf Manager’s Association second annual “Mowing Patterns Contest” winner in 2014, here are a few tips to utilize when using your natural grass field as a canvas.

Another key element to bear in mind is how straight each line is. Three tools I always carry with me are: a can of spray paint, string lines and a tape measure. Once laying down a string line or tape measure, I spray a dot to mark the field for precision. After spraying, you can remove the tape measure and lines to avoid mowing over them. Utilizing a tape measure can be helpful to keep the integrity of your lines in check.

Know Your Game Plan Before diving into intricate mowing patterns, it’s important to devise a plan. I recommend drawing the pattern on paper so you know what you’re doing before you start cutting. Once deciding which pattern you would like to mow, make sure your team is on the same page and get to it!

Height A critical aspect of mowing is knowing how high or low to cut the grass. A higher mowing height is what I would recommend. Typically, I mow at one inch for cool season grass, such as blue grass, and three-quarters of an inch for warm season grass, such as Bermuda. The higher the grass is the greater contrast is projected between light and dark blades, vastly improving pattern coloration.

Picasso Patterns Baseball is typically the sport with the most flexibility with patterns due to the outfield. Football and soccer require more painted field lines that align with the rules of the game, such as first downs and off sides. This makes it more difficult for a sports turf manager to deviate and express his or her creativity. Once you are ready to begin cutting, the primary piece of equipment you’ll need is a reel mower. Personally, with Memphis we utilize the Toro Triplex 3100. Each reel has a roller, knocking the grass down and laying it over, creating a pattern. To produce the pattern, I mow in the same direction using a

reel mower to provide various patterns. One of the challenges is that you must continue to mow in the same direction over the course of several home games to maintain a crisp pattern. In order for the pattern to pop and look clean, I recommend mowing it in a few times. We also mow daily during homestands, which certainly helps the pattern show, but is mainly to keep the playing surface consistent on a day-to-day basis. Finally, more intricate patterns require more work, measuring and planning to achieve desired results. Additionally, when mowing any pattern I always start in the same place so the pattern won’t shift. Cooler season grasses such as bluegrass are typically better for mowing patterns because they are cut higher, although you can still produce patterns with warm season grasses as well. In the end, one of the most fundamental aspects of mowing patterns is how the light hits the grass. To achieve this, it’s encouraged to bend the grass towards or away from you, depending on which shade of grass you’d like to project.

Consistency and Playability Something else to consider is ensuring all patterns are even and consistent to prevent balls from hopping and bouncing strangely in the outfield. This instills trust in your home team’s manager and players so they will be more confident in your ability to produce a consistent playing surface.

Practice Makes Perfect Like everything in life, practice makes perfect. Mowing patterns require a lot of practice, but are well worth it once the final result comes to fruition. The business of mowing patterns is getting more creative by the inning. The proverbial torch continues to be passed down by sports turf managers, with each new generation stepping up to the plate. Last, but not least, don’t forget to have fun! 44

The 'Capital' of Hoosier Golf If you are a golfer in Indiana, you have heard about the Otter Creek Golf Course, located near Columbus, in south central Indiana. If you are a serious golfer in Indiana, then you have probably played Otter Creek. And, if you are a good golfer living anywhere in the world, put Otter Creek on your ‘bucket list,’ if you have not played it yet. Otter Creek (www.ottercreekgolf. com; 812-579-5227) is one of Indiana’s top golf courses. It is not a private course. It’s a public course. There is no pool, tennis courts, or a spa. It is simply a golf course. Opened in 1964, Otter Creek – designed by the late, legendary Robert Trent Jones, Sr. – has matured like a fine wine. It has gotten better with age! Otter Creek is as appealing now as it was when it opened in 1964. “Building tournament golf courses today usually involves large scale

50

earth moving equipment,” says Chad Cockerham, PGA head golf professional at Otter Creek. “Course architects can begin with a clean canvas and build the landscape they desire. Fifty years ago, architects took the landscape and designed the course into it. You could say the golf course was always here, Mr. (Robert Trent) Jones just chipped way the rough pieces. What

was left was a fair test that provides a stage where champions distinguish themselves from the rest of the field.” Otter Creek is now a 27-hole complex. In 1995, another set of nine holes – the East course designed by Rees Jones -- was opened. The original 18 holes were renamed the North (front nine) and the West (back nine). This course was originally owned by Cummins Engine, the largest employer in the area. The course was intended to be used by Cummins’ employees, but soon after opening, the company donated the course to the City of Columbus. Golfers are now indebted to Cummins Engine. Amateur golf is especially indebted to the existence of Otter Creek. Why? Because the Indiana State Amateur Golf Tournament was held here from 1965 – 1990 and on five other occasions since then. Otter Creek is where Indiana’s amateur golfers go to earn their golfing credibility.

Lake Worth Municipal Golf Club:

A Coastal Paradise While golfers in Palm Beach County, Florida have access to a number of well-known, nicely manicured layouts such as Emerald Dunes, Madison Green, and PGA National, one of the forgotten ‘gems’ is Lake Worth Municipal Golf Club, one of the courses on the Florida Historic Golf Trail. It’s ‘worth’ noting that Lake Worth Municipal (www. lakeworth.org; 561-582-9713) was a winter golfing destination for baseball great Babe Ruth, back in the day! Opened in 1926 as a nine-hole course designed by Theodore J. Moreau and William Langford, Lake Worth Municipal is perched on one of the most

nearby Atlantic Ocean is another bonus -- keeping it comfortable. As for the actual golf course, it’s an old-style south Florida golf course, where walking is always an option. It’s pure golf and a fun outlet for golfers of all abilities. Every day, Lake Worth Municipal plays like a links golf course as the wind is everpresent -- always impacting your selection of the right club for the next shot. What makes this course special is that every green is raised from the fairway and is bordered by a lush perimeter which adds to the difficulty of getting ‘up & down’ for par. While the championship tees measure less than 6,200 yards, the course will play longer and tougher than it appears on paper. The course opens and closes ‘like a lion,’ and

In 1948, golf course architect Dick Wilson redesigned the existing nine holes and added nine more to create today’s par-70 layout. Here, while six of the holes are alongside the Intracoastal, all 18 holes are within eyeshot of the aquatic landmark. You can always look to the east and see the water. The views are also spectacular from the club’s ‘19th hole,’ E.R. Bradley’s Beach Club, which overlooks the Intracoastal. After each shot, every golfer should take a moment to glance at the beauty of the nearby waterway. It helps put the game of golf in its proper perspective. And, the ocean breeze off the 58

the 16 other holes are not ‘lamb-like.’ The opening hole is a 500+ yard, rightto-left par five -- the #2 handicap hole. If you hit the opening tee shot too far left, your ball will find the Intracoastal Waterway. At Lake Worth Municipal,

the best was saved for last, as the 18th is a 435-yard par four, made more difficult by any southerly breeze. The 18th is the #1 handicap hole. A par at the home hole is always a worthy achievement. The most memorable tee shot here is at the par-three 17th. From the tee, an unblocked view of the Intracoastal Waterway is at your back -- a priceless perspective. As you look to the 17th green, the steeple of a nearby church grabs your attention, especially late in the day with a setting sun to the west. With your tee shot, aim to the right of the steeple. To add to the local ‘flavor’ of Lake Worth Municipal, three benches on the course are named in honor of those who once called this club their golfing home. They are Charlie Terry, Agnes Carreccia, and a group of golfers called “The Dogfighters.” After you play Lake Worth Municipal, you’ll understand why this course was their ‘home away from home’ and why it remains that way for many of the area’s golfing regulars. Plus, not many people get to play golf and walk in the footsteps of such luminary figures as baseball slugger Babe Ruth. The Lake Worth Municipal Golf Club awaits your arrival. Are you ready? Central Alabama’s Single-Shot Sensations In golf, championship memories are often made at par threes. Think about it. Many of golf’s biggest moments over the years were made on these singleshot sensations. Case in point: Do you remember Jack Nicklaus’ massive birdie putt on the par-three 16th in the fourth round of the 1975 Masters to beat Johnny Miller and Tom Weiskopf? Do you recall Tom Watson holing his greenside birdie chip at the par-three 17th in the fourth round of the 1982 U.S. Open at Pebble Beach, which clinched his victory? And, do you remember Fred Couples’ tee shot on the parthree 12th in the fourth round of the 1992 Masters when his ball refused to roll back down the slope into Rae’s Creek? Fred got up and down to save par and won the Masters that year. When your golf travels take you to central Alabama, you will play

North River #17 many jaw-dropping par threes – some of which will be on the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail. At Tuscaloosa’s NorthRiver Yacht Club, there is one par three (the 6th) on the front nine and one par three on the back nine (the 17th), which are arguably two of the most picturesque holes that you will play. Both par threes feature a pond that sits between the tee and the green. The view from the tee is nothing short of picturesque. In both cases, take enough club to you reach the putting surface. At FarmLinks in Sylacauga, the par three fifth is the Signature Hole. The tee shot is one of the most dramatic and visually appealing shots that you will ever hit in your golfing life. At the fifth, you will be faced with a downhill tee shot to a green in the valley below. From the Longhorn tees, there’s a 170-foot vertical drop from tee to green. As soon as you arrive 60

FarmLinks #5 on the tee, enjoy the spectacular, panoramic perspective of the nearby countryside, including a view of Sulphur Mountain in the distance. The other breathtaking par three at FarmLinks is the 17th hole. With Parker Lodge situated in the woods behind the green, the 17th is called Big Gulp because Pennywinkle Lake sits between the tee and the green. This is no time to be short with your tee shot. At the 17th, you are definitely better off trying to save par from behind the green than from the bottom of Pennywinkle Lake! The view from Parker’s Lodge is one of the most picturesque sights in golf. At the Lake course at Grand National near Opelika, bring your camera to the par three 15th hole. From the tee box, you are faced with a 100 percent carry over part of Lake Saugahatchee to the green. If you make a mistake on this tee shot, make sure you are long or to the left of the green. Anything that is short or right of the green will find a ‘watery grave.’ This is one of most scenic holes on the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail. At the Ridge course at Oxmoor Valley near Birmingham, the most memorable par three is the 8th hole. Here, the tee shot must carry a pond. Because of its downhill nature, you don’t need as much club as the distance would normally require. This is a fun hole to play as you get to watch a well-struck tee shot search for the flagstick. A hole-in-

one is always possible. Don’t forget to repair your pitch mark on the green. An exciting, memory making opportunity at Ross Bridge in Hoover is the tee shot over the water at the par three 4th hole. If the pin is located on the front of the green, aim for the middle of the green. If the pin is anywhere else on the putting surface, you have ‘the green light’ to go directly at the flag. Good luck as you go pin-seeking on your next golf trip to central Alabama! Maybe you will be golf’s next single-shot sensation.

"A Tar Heel" State Treat The Country Club of Salisbury (Salisbury, NC; www.ccofsalisbury.com) is like your family’s aging matriarch. She may not be big, mighty, and overpowering, but as time goes by, you admire and respect her for all that she stands for and has taught you over the years. And as all golfers would agree, lessons are often learned in golf as they are learned in life -- the hard way, usually with a message from that aging matriarch. The Country Club of Salisbury, a Donald Ross design, is also like a fine French wine. It gets better with age. Like many Donald Ross courses, what the Country Club of Salisbury lacks in length – less than 6,600 yards from the back tees -- is compensated by cleverly designed greens and well-positioned bunkers. At the Country Club of Salisbury, you can clearly see where you need to hit your tee shots, but that changes from day to day based on the proximity of the pin positions on the greens. The 18 holes at the Country Club of Salisbury, which opened in 1920, appear rather benign on paper, but don’t ‘judge a book by its cover,’ as they say. If you can move the ball with a fade or a draw, then you will do well on this course. For the most part, the Country Club of Salisbury – a par 71 layout -- opens with nine holes in the rolling hills of central North Carolina and finishes with nine holes in the low-lying valley. Of the first nine tee shots, four are downhill, three are uphill, and two of them demand a slight right-toleft trajectory. There are no simple, straightaway, 375-yard par fours at the Country Club of Salisbury, a private equity club located about 45 minutes northeast of Charlotte, just off I-85. The first five holes of the back nine are fairly flat, but the sloping hill that crosses the 10th fairway is a piece of terrain that you must carry; the 11th and 12th fairways are heavily bunkered; the trees are a major concern on the 13th if your tee shot veers left or right; and a wide, rock-filled creek protects the entrance to the 14th green. Once you step foot on the tee of the par five 15th, you have a geographic roller coaster ride home where false fronts 62

are the key feature of the last four greens. The tee shot at the 16th is ‘blind’ and the approach is to a raised, crowned green -- a typical feature of a Donald Ross design. The most difficult tee shot on the course is on the par three 17th where you must carry the ball from tee to green in order to get a birdie putt. Anything short of the green will finish in a greenside sand trap or will trickle back down the hill, leaving a daunting uphill chip to a thin, rolling, ribbon-like green. The home hole, a right-to-left dogleg par four, presents a downhill tee shot followed by an uphill approach to

a well-protected green. If you can finish with four straight pars or better at the Country Club of Salisbury, that is worthy of a fist-pump. Afterwards, while relaxing at the Grill Room, you will look back on your round and recall a number of ‘wouldacoulda-shoulda’ moments where potential pars turned into bogeys and possible birdies never materialized. So, when you play the Country Club of Salisbury, wear your ‘thinking cap’ and make sure it’s working, otherwise you will continue to learn lessons the hard way, just as you have over the years from your family’s aging matriarch. Willis Wins Third Tennessee Open Garrett Willis of Loudon, TN captured the 67th SunTrust Tennessee Open Championship with a two shot victory over 2002 Tennessee Open Champion Tim Jackson of Germantown, TN. The victory was Willis’s third win in the championship—having also won in 2000 and 2013. With the win, Willis joins Mason Rudolph (6), Pat Abbott (4), Gibby Gilbert, Sr. (4) and Joe Campbell (3) as the only players to win three or more Tennessee Opens. Willis shot a tournament record 62 (10-under-par) in the second round which allowed him to take a three stroke lead into the final round. Willis began his final round with a front nine score of 35. He then proceeded to make a triple-bogey at the par-4 10th hole which allowed Jackson to move into a tie for the lead. Willis

66

bounced back with a quick birdie at the par-4 11th hole, but a wayward shot at the par-5 15th hole led to a doublebogey. With Jackson now in the lead, Willis played aggressively and after birdies on the par-3 16th hole and par-4 17th hole, Willis and Jackson stood on the tee of the final hole of the championship tied for the lead. After another birdie by Willis, he would fin-

ish with a final round 73 and 54-hole total of 205 (11-under-par) which was good enough for the two-stroke victory. Willis took home the first place check of $10,000 and will have his name engraved on the Tennessee Open’s Curtis Person, Sr. Trophy which is on permanent display at Golf House Tennessee in Franklin, TN.

Starting this month, we’re going to be including a Q & A section with our golf strength tip of the month. Don’t forget to send in your questions to mitch11strength@gmail.com through Twitter @MitchSadowsky or facebook. com/Mitch11strength Loving the video segment and the low top converse!! If you haven’t already covered it in the O&A, could you cover the importance of training barefoot or in shoes with less lift? –John Palm Harbor, FL Thanks John, Great question! When training, I actually do prefer barefoot for many ground based exercises such as deadlifts or anything with a kettlebell (please avoid dropping the bells on your bare feet). If you do prefer shoes I really like shoes with minimal to zero heel lift. Why? Several reasons. One, barefoot or shoes with minimal lift give the feet a chance to interact with the ground better therefore increasing foot strength and stability. Being closer to the ground also gives your body a better feel and connection with the ground, increasing the ability to create force (ground reaction force). Lifting the heel also affects the potentiation of the posterior chain. In regular terms, it’s tough to get the posterior chain involved and working when it feels like we’re being pushed forward. Another reason I really like Converse Chuck Taylor shoes for strength is it allows the foot to create better ground reaction force. Meaning, when you wear a traditional running shoe to strength train in, the cushion in the shoe will decrease the force at which you can push through the ground. Because Chuck’s have such rigid sole, the ability to create force though the ground increases quite a bit. Now, there ARE exceptions. A weightlifting shoe generally has more heel lift but an extremely rigid sole. The heel lift will allow a deeper hip hinge in to a squat if you are squatting heavy or doing Olympic lifts such as cleans, snatches or variations of them. But, if you don’t have those, I think Chuck’s or any other minimal rise, rigid sole shoe is great. As it applies to golf, most golf shoes DO have a slight heel lift and is favorable to creating greater ground force due to the golf posture. In fact, there was a great study done comparing golf specific shoes with a heel rise vs a minimal heel rise golf shoe and the shoe with the greater heel rise allowed the center of balance to shift forward versus staying over the heel. The forward posture allowed better control of the swing and better swing kinematics. The key though, as with all footwear, find what’s BEST for your foot since everyone’s feet are different.

If you could do just ONE exercise for golf, what would it be? ––Pat, Milwaukee, WI Just ONE? OK, well if I can have just ONE, it would have to be the kettlebell swing. When done correctly, it should look like an Olympic lift rather than a squat. The rapid acceleration of the bell via the motion of the hips and knees requires substantial activation of muscles in both the posterior chain and the abdominals, similar to a jump. At the top of the swing (shoulder height, no higher) a contraction of the abdominals makes the swing feel like a plank creating tension through the trunk and maintaining an engagement of the lats, a key structure in the golf swing for maintaining T-spine mobility and strength. So: explosive movement, enhances postural integrity, forces core stabilization, creates gluteal activation, builds hamstring strength and is a great interval exercise. Sounds like a winner to me! I really like doing crossfit. Is crossfit good for golf? ––Laura, Orlando, FL Welp, I’m opening Pandora’s box here. Thanks Laura! As a trainer, and I do have a Crossfit Level 1 certification, I like a LOT of aspects of Crossfit. I believe there are some drawbacks, but there are lot of benefits as well. One big drawback is the lack of movements in all three planes of motion. Crossfit tends to stay mainly in the frontal and sagittal planes with little rotational work in the transverse plane. I also think that overloading and loss of movement intregrity/loss of form is a concern. HOWEVER, I think there are some good Crossfit boxes out there, and some bad ones. Just like there are a good trainers and bad trainers. If you do decide to do the crossfit route, make sure you are supplementing your workouts with some rotational and lateral work to keep your golf game strong!! Thanks for everyone’s questions this week. Keep them coming for next month! See you next month!!!

Exercise of the month: Pro agility shuttle You might recognize this as a staple from the NFL Combine, but it’s also a great tool to develop speed, acceleration, change of direction and rotational speed. Here’s how it’s done: Using 3 cones or any object to mark a distance with, place two cones ten yards apart and a third cone in the middle as the start/ finish line. The athlete straddles the middle line. The player can start by going either to the right or left direction. For example, at the start (you can use a partner to time you or train solo), the player turns and runs five yards to the right side and touches the line with his or her right hand. He or she then runs 10 yards to their left and touches the other line with their left hand, then finally turns and finishes by running back through the start/finish line. Use a 1 to 4 or higher work to rest ratio for best results (if it takes you 5 seconds to complete, rest 20 seconds or more before repeating).
