“What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us.” —Ralph Waldo Emerson

This year we’re celebrating the 23rd Anniversary of Golf Central Magazine, which was launched on April 1st, 1999, and was originally published as a monthly glossy print magazine called Florida Golf Central. No that is not a typo, the magazine was launched on April Fool’s Day. “I pity the fool” as Mr. T. would say, for those that doubted us in those early days! Twenty-three years later, through various circumstances and tragic events… WE ARE STILL HERE. When I birthed this baby and launched the magazine, I owned Golf Attic a new, used, and collectibles consignment shop in Winter Park, Fl. My initial objective was to create a monthly state publication that focused on heartfelt, fun, non-intimidating features for avid and beginner golfers alike. Today, Golf Central has expanded in both print and digital formats to cover all aspects of the industry including turf, travel, philanthropy and lifestyle while reaching loyal readers in Florida, Georgia, Alabama, North and South Carolina, my home state of Tennessee….and the world! My passion for and commitment to the game as well as the industry, has continued to fuel my fire and DEEP RESPECT. I am so grateful for the many opportunities, friendships, and partnerships publishing this magazine has provided. At the top of that list, is my Editor-in-Chief, Shannon Coates, who has been the ultimate “wing- woman” in helping me grow the magazine, never missing an issue in 23 years, and has truly been the wind beneath my wings since the beginning. THANK YOU for ALL you do and for being the method in my madness and the glue in the magazine’s longevity and success. After a slow steady decline and many doomsday predictions about the future of our sport for more than a decade, golf is booming and surging in popularity once again thanks to the pandemic. Who could have predicted that? Not since the “Tiger Effect” has golf grown and become even more diversified in terms of number of rounds and new players. From golf course and resort owners, PGA professionals, golf course Superintendents, the PGA and LPGA Tour, USGA, Audubon International, Florida Turfgrass, Florida Historic Golf Trail, ING, and most of all our loyal Golf Central readers, this girl is still ON FIRE and will keep carrying the torch!

Friends for Joe Joe Fazekus is an amazing father, husband, co-worker, and friend. He has dedicated his entire life to helping others as a Flight Paramedic/RN and Family Practice Nurse Practitioner. Sadly, a week before Christmas, Joe’s life was turned upsidedown when he was diagnosed with Glioblastoma, a rare and aggressive form of Brain Cancer. Everyone was devastated by this news and wanted to find a way to help Joe. My dad, Joe’s coworker on the helicopter for 10 years came up with the idea of a fundraiser golf tournament and called it “Friends for Joe.” He soon found a generous title sponsor, Metro Aviation and everything started to fall into place. A committee was formed and it was decided they didn’t want this to be just another golf

Helicopter ball drop tournament. Instead, they wanted Joe to be surprised and excited by including themes and activities they knew Joe loved, like Star Wars and old muscle cars. The tournament was hosted at the very beautiful Rio Pinar Country Club in Orlando, January 19th. The event started off with a bang as Joe made a grand entrance in front of a large cheering crowd in the 1977 Smokey and the 10

Brian Whalen with the ball launcher Bandit Trans Am. Only moments later the Imperial March blasted on the PA speakers while Boba Fett along with a cast of other Star Wars characters from the Florida 501st Legion exited the club house towards Joe. The shocked look on his face was priceless. Overhead,

the sound of Joe’s helicopter from Advent Health could be heard loudly. The helicopter performed a closest to the pin ball drop using all multi-colored golf balls. From a distance it looked like hundreds of gum balls falling through the air. The winner received a $2,000 set of Rhineland kitchen knives. Everyone commented on how cool it was to see a helicopter land on the golf course. There were plenty of other fun contests such as a putting game for two bottles of Don Perignon Champaign. A closest to the Yoda Statue in the middle of the 6th fairway for Walt Disney tickets, but my favorite was the golf ball cannon that shot the ball 500 yards in the air on a par 5. To make it more interesting, the closest to the pin contest was played using 150 year old hickory golf clubs from Scotland and surprisingly someone hit a ball to 4 ft. I stayed on hole 12, a beautiful par 3 over the water and took on challengers for another closest to the pin contest in exchange for raffle tickets. It felt great to personally contribute to the cause and by the end of the day with all the generous donations and sponsors we were able to give the Fazekus family over $35,000. Not bad for only having one month to put the entire event together. The “Friends for Joe” fundraiser golf tournament was a great success. It was amazing how everyone came together to support Joe after all he has done to help others. We made sure he knows he’s not fighting cancer alone. This was a very special day that brought great joy to all, especially Joe. Golf Central • Volume 23, Issue 1

The Florida Swing Has Finally Swung Closed for 2022 With the continuation of the 4-event Florida swing, we congratulated Sam Burns on his Honda Classic win.

Next up… Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard at Bay Hill. What can you say about an event that has the King’s name on it. You expect the competition to be tough… and you expect the conditions of the course to be immaculate and challenging, and the 2022 API had no disappointments. The final 3-holes at Bay Hill can be among the toughest on PGA Tour, and the point in which you have get through if you want the chance to wear the red cardigan sweater. 8 players entered in to the final 3-holes with a chance to win, and the API came down to the final Sunday pairing to decide the champion. Scottie Scheffler, the leader in the clubhouse, stood at the edge of the 18th green watching as Billy Horschel, in the final group heading to the green with Billy, needing a birdie to tie and force a playoff. Billy seemed to be the fan favorite, never having won an event is his home state of Florida and growing up only an hour away from Bay Hill in Grant, Florida. Billy’s 10-foot putt for birdie to force the play-off was on the way, but turned away from the hole, securing the win for Scottie Scheffler, Champion of the 2022 Arnold Palmer Invitational.

Number 3 of the Florida Swing – The Players Championship

Cameron Smith

Take the always ominous Stadium Course by Pete Dye and add in Mother Natures idea of a good time with all the element exposed, and the 2022 Players Champions seemed like a mixed-up mess for the tournament committee. Imagine a first round that took 2 ½ days to complete. If you had played your first round early Thursday morning, you wouldn’t play again until Saturday afternoon. Keeping your focus on the event had to be one tough challenge. The Monday final round wasn’t without drama as the event ended. Australian, Cameron Smith with the lead on the 18th hole drove it in to the trees on the right side of the fairway and the simple chip back to the fairway… was hit to solid and rolled all the way across the fairway and into the water hazard, and after a great wedge shot to the green with his 4th shot taped in for a bogey, opening up the door for India’s Anirban Lahiri. Needing a birdie on the final hole Anirban needed the green side wedge shot to find the hole. The chip broke just in front of the hole, making Cameron Smith the 2022 Tournament Players Champion.

The Tours most Colorful Tournament – Valspar Championship was the final event for the Florida Swing. The Valspar Championship gave the fans everything that they were looking for in a PGA Tour event. Big swings in the leaderboard. The Copperhead course with the ultimate “Snake Pit” taking a bite out of the final Sunday leaderboard. It came down to the defending champion Sam Burns playing one group ahead of the 3rd round leader Davis Riley. Sam Burns had played the final hole with a par. Davis Riley had to match Sam’s par on the final hole with his own par to force the play off. Riley’s second shot to the green gave him a shot at a birdie to win, but came up just short, assuring for the fans exactly what they were looking for… a play off. Like 2 titans battling it out on the 18th… they matched scores with a par and the playoff moved to the dangerous 16th hole where Sam Burns drained a 20-footer being just off the edge of the green and Riley coming up short. Congratulations to Sam Burns on a very impressive win at the Valspar and becoming yet another back-to-back winner. Looking forward to 2023, will Sam be the first for the colorful “Three-Peat” at the Innisbrook Resort.

Val Griesbach Which group of people did you associate most with in high school? I hung out with a group of girls from class that I’ve known forever, they’re my ride or dies and I miss them so much! What is your favorite sport to play? Favorite to watch? As much as I’d like to say golf, my favorite sport is actually soccer, I love playing and watching it! Do you enjoy playing golf? Are there any golfers in your family? I don’t have any golfers in the family, but I recently started to learn how to play, it’s such a unique sport and I’m ready to take any tips and tricks from our golfers. What do you feel makes this club special? I believe that having a good team that cares about the well-being of our golfers is so important and that quality is what makes Hawk’s Landing so special. The perfectly maintained course and our island green is a cherry on top. What is your favorite part of being a cart girl? What is your least favorite part? My favorite part about being a cart girl is making sure everyone is having fun! Meeting new people and having such amazing conversations with each and every one of them is the highlight of my day. Playing golf can get so stressful at times and I make it my priority to ensure they’re having a good time by serving them my signature drinks. My least favorite would definitely be working in the rain What is your memorable moment working as a cart girl? I will never forget the day a golfer approached me and gave me a tip after I made him his favorite drink and he said, if you do good things, good comes back to you. Like happy karma. He made his shot and got a hole in one!

Where did you grow up? I was born and raised in the beautiful country of Ecuador, right in the dynamic and vibrant capital, Quito. I feel so lucky to have experienced the history and culture for so many years of my life and I am so fortunate to have called it my home. Three years ago, my family and I moved to the Land of opportunity. Here in the US I’ve thrived and I’m excited to see where my next steps take me. 18

Do you think the cart girls should be able to dress differently? How you prefer dress if you were given a choice? I wouldn’t change my cart girl outfit for anything! Like come on, a skirt and colorful polo sweater vest. Who would ask for more? It’s perfection! What is the funniest thing you’ve ever seen on the golf course? The funniest thing I’ve seen is a guy making his shot with his legs submerged in the lake, if he was aiming for the hole under the lake, then I’d say he was very successful. What type of music do you prefer? I’m obsessed with reggaeton if you see me at the golf course there’s a high chance I’m blasting some Bad Bunny while giving everyone a free concert. Golf Central • Volume 23, Issue 1

What hobbies do you enjoy? I’m always ready for a new adventure with my favorite people, say the word and my bags are packed! What is your idea of “the perfect date”? Picture this: waves crashing on the shore, a fuzzy blanket, goodies, and drinks (gotta have my dr. pepper) all while listening to old music. Relaxed evening at home, or nightclub and cocktails? Nightclub… all day every day, love to dance with all my Latina girlies. Favorite comedian? My best friend. She’s just the craziest and funniest person I’ve ever met. Favorite type of movie? DISNEY MOVIES! You can never be too old for Disney. There’s nothing like the comfort of hopping into a comfy blanket and playing my favorite Disney movie. Favorite charity to support? Wildlife Conversation is something so close to my heart, I can’t imagine life without all the lovely critters that come to greet us on the golf course. What else would you like for us to know about you? That’s the perfect conversation to have when you come to visit me at Hawks Landing!

Lock Down Your Putting Technique And Enjoy Greater Success

ere is a trick question for you: what do pizza and putting have in common? When I began writing my book, LEAN LOCK: The Groundbreaking New Method for Making More Putts, the first thing that came to my mind was the similarity between the concept of striking a pure putt and running a profitable pizza restaurant. That might sound strange but hear me out... As a former top 30 money winner on the PGA Tour who later became a franchisee and executive at Papa John’s (Pizza) International, we used to say there are only three things you need to do to run a successful restaurant: provide good food, good service and do it at a reasonable price. That sounds simple, but a lot of restaurateurs can attest it is not always easy. The same thing could be said about striking a pure putt. It is a simple motion, but there are a lot of frustrated golfers that will tell you it is not easy. Franchising provides a system and method to follow to make running a successful Papa John’s Pizza restaurant easier to do with a higher likelihood of success. Similarly, the LEAN LOCK™ putting method is a system that makes striking pure putts simpler and easier.

20

Golf Central • Volume 22, Issue 12

S

triking a pure putt means hitting a putt that starts the ball rolling end over end immediately in the direction you intended for it to start; that’s it. No matter how you accomplished it, if you do that, you have hit the putt “pure” and have achieved the goal of perfecting your putting stroke. Reading the green, aiming the putter face, and hitting it the correct speed for the line you have chosen are important for sinking putts, but they have nothing to do with whether or not you have struck the putt “pure.” There are only three factors affecting how the ball rolls off the putter face when it strikes the ball. They are the following: 1. The direction the club face is aimed at the moment of impact 2. The path of the club head as it approaches and impacts the ball 3. The attack angle at which the putter approaches and strikes the ball I call those three elements the “APA,” which stands for club face Aim, Path and Attack Angle. Execute the Aim, Path and Attack Angle (APA) properly and you will strike every putt pure. To help golfers learn the LEAN LOCK method and improve their putting, I designed and launched LEAN LOCK putters (see photos) specifically built with the proper loft and lie angle for this method. No other putters in the market are designed for or will achieve the dramatic results using the LEAN LOCK putting method. The unique forward-leaning shaft designed into the LEAN LOCK is combined with three degrees of loft and an extra-long, slightly rotated grip. When the putter is held properly, against the target side of the leading arm, and the hands and wrists are comfortably positioned on the flat portion of the rotated grip, the wrists cannot break down at impact. Any tendency to do so only strengthens the “locking” effect of the stroke. Therefore, the name LEAN LOCK. Putting is the part of the game requiring the least amount of physical strength, flexibility, or athleticism. Any golfer, and I mean ANY golfer, has the physical ability to be a good, if not excellent, putter. The LEAN LOCK putting method combined with the LEAN LOCK putter will help you strike more putts pure and do it consistently. Once you try it, LEAN LOCK simply makes sense. Every LEAN LOCK putter comes with a copy of my book and a free LEAN LOCK lesson. To learn more about the LEAN LOCK putting method, watch my detailed instructional videos, or to purchase a LEAN LOCK putter, available in a mallet or blade, visit www.leanlockputting.com. had a number of negative side effects on life and people’s lifestyles around the world, it actually had a positive impact on real estate sales in Georgia. “Many people, especially golfers, have moved their primary home to their secondary home, which is on a golf course in Georgia,” noted Gasparini. “It (the pandemic) gave people a chance to live where they worked. Nowadays, people want more green space which is what a golf course provides.” According to Gasparini, homebuying golfers are looking for a location with four seasons, access to hospital facilities, and proximity to a major airport. Georgia meets those criteria. One of the more popular real estate buying destinations in Georgia is at Lake Oconee in Greensboro, Georgia. According to Gasparini, there are a wide variety of price points along Lake Oconee. “In the greater Lake Oconee area, homes range from $300,000 to $7,000,000,” added Gasparini. “Other appealing aspects of the greater Greensboro area is its close proximity to the Atlanta airport, its historic appeal, and the active lifestyle by current residents, which includes playing tennis and enjoying life near the lake.” In addition to playing golf, residents along Lake Oconee are fishing, boating, playing tennis and playing pickleball. And, when big golf tournaments in Georgia are seen on television, Gasparini’s phone starts ringing. “Real estate sales do pick up after big golf events like the Masters Augusta and the Tour Championship in Atlanta,” admitted Gasparini. “This (Georgia) is a great place to live.” For complete details on real estate opportunities along the Georgia Golf Trail, access www.georgiagolfrealestate. com. What three things would you need to survive on a deserted island? Golf course (do they have those on deserted islands?), HBO/Netflix, comfy bed. Who would you like to have with you on the same deserted island; and why? I’d hope it’s someone that can put up with me for awhile. What do you find to be the most annoying habit people demonstrate on the golf course? Slow play and not filling divots. Name the three most important things to you in this world. Family, friends, romance. Given the choice; would you select love, success, or money to keep yourself happy? Love, then we can build our own empire.

Where were you born? Did you grow up there? I was born in Cheyenne, Wyoming where my dad was stationed in the Air Force. We moved to Tampa, FL shortly after that. What do you do for a living? Currently a Tour Operations Coordinator with the LPGA. What would you like to do for a living? My goal was to work in sports, so I guess you could say I’m living out my dream. Aside from golf; what do you prefer for fun and relaxation? Still addicted to golf, but finding new shows is my relaxation. What golf apparel do you like to wear? Tend to lean towards Nike, FJ or Travis Mathew Whom do you most admire for their inner and outer beauty? My mother, always put my sister and I first and has the kindest heart. 24

What do you fear the most? Not a fan of snakes. What three people would you most like to play with in your fantasy golf foursome? Tiger, Harry Higgs, closest friend. What are some of your great accomplishments? The greatest are yet to come. Favorite comedian? Myself. Movies:...comedy, drama, action, romance? I could watch them all, but love an action movie. Last book you read? The Last Duel Favorite charity to support? Humane Society. What else would you like for us to know about you? I’m easy going but passionate about the things that are close to my heart. Everything else is for all of you to find out! Golf Central • Volume 23, Issue 1

Gent Row Founder Tim Beasley Has His Eye On Making Golf Even More Fashionable, Both On The Course and Off

Since golf is one of the

few professional sports in which players can dress how they want to express their own personal style, Tim Beasley is about to tee-off on some fashion ideas golfers might consider both on and off the course. Actually, Beasley believes golfers handle their fashion freedom with more dignity and professionalism than others, so golfers don’t deserve to be stereotyped as bad dressers. In his eyes, while watching and playing golf himself, he says most golfers look fine. Many even stylish. Yes, there are a few fashion renegades that that have given the sport and those on the PGA Tour a bad name, but for every fashion blooper, there’s a Tiger Woods to make up for them. Phil Mickelson’s style tends to stick with solid colors, mostly black, which you can rarely go wrong with, while Greg Norman has been one of the best dressed golfers on the PGA tour for decades and even has his own clothing line. He’s best known for solids, polos and is almost always rocking his signature straw hat. Still one of the sharpest dressed men on any course, Gary Player’s signature color has always been black, making him the Johnny Cash of the PGA. But he’s also known to switch it up on occasion, usually opting for head-to-toe white instead. Tiger Woods doesn’t take many fashion risks on the course. Woods has been one of the most consistently best 26

golfers on the PGA Tour for over a decade. Beasley notes that Tiger’s Nike ensembles tend to be solid on the bottom, paired with solids or stripes on top, most likely in red and black. Whenever Beasley goes out to the many elegant parties, galas, fashion shows and awards ceremonies he attends, you’ll find celebrities buzzing around him almost as if looking for the latest fashion trends as they see Tim as the ultimate trendy. So, where does Beasley get his acute sense of fashion and why do so many men turn to this clothing connoisseur and savoir faire founder of Gent Row for updating their wardrobe? STYLE AND CONVENIENCE Those are the two magic words that have made Gent Row a hole-in-one success. Gent Row is adept at providing discriminating, but time-constrained customers who’d rather be out the course with quick and easy at-home fittings for online purchases, which makes such fashion sense for golfers. Most products seen on Gent Row’s online store can be purchased once customer’s measurements are in Gent Row’s database. How easy is that? Golf Central • Volume 22, Issue 12

“Tough times affect us all,” said Beasley. “I’m just happy that I was able to use my resources to help as many people as possible. Making a difference in the lives of others and seeing how I can help them is what makes me truly happy,” he said. Today Gent Row is not only outfitting clothing discerning men around the United States, but is in process of now negotiating jackets and other clothing items for our US military personnel. The innovative designs feature personalized protection to help keep our soldiers safe.

FASHION ROOTS IN COTTON Beasley comes from a small town in Virginia and has over 13 years of experience in fine men’s style and tailoring and providing bespoke services and luxury goods to countless discriminating men, including many golfers across the country. Those stylish traits of his run deep in his family as his late great grandfather Robert L. Thornton was a poor man in Dallas with little formal education. He eventually rose from picking cotton to prominent businessman and the city’s mayor in 1953. It was Thornton who provided seed money to Herman Marcus that founded the first Neiman Marcus store in 1907. Today, his great grandson serves Discerning Men throughout North America.

GENT ROW MISSION Gent Row (http://www.gentrow.com) has remained committed to its mission of providing basics to those in need right through the pandemic during which it has seen a dramatic increase in sales of its fashionable brand of men’s clothing fitted at home and he has launched the Gent Row Foundation to help challenged, underprivileged young teenage boys to stay on an upward course, including teaching them to play golf. At the start of the pandemic, Gent Row manufactured small quantities of fashionable masks, but as the need for quality masks increased at hospitals around the world, Gent Row switched to FDA regulated PPE materials and ramped up production. Covid-19 affected many lives and to help the cause, Beasley transitioned his company into the manufacturing of PPE materials to help hospitals and institutions keep their front-line workers safe. During this time, Gent Row manufactured over 44 million PPE products including masks and surgical gowns. Golf Central • Volume 23, Issue 1

BEAT THE HEAT IN MICHIGAN’S GAYLORD GOLF MECCA Treetops Resort

The Gaylord Golf Mecca offers long getaway summer days with play until 9 p.m. or later, and in comfortable average temperatures in the mid-70s across the great green expanse of Northern Michigan. Combine that with 35 years of partnership, cooperation, vision, investment and hard work by the partners of this unique cooperative marketing model and you have the premier U.S. summer golf destination. It’s perfect beat-the-heat golf, and in this anniversary year 17 landmark golf courses, including some designed by legends of architecture, and 21 welcoming lodging partners Treetops Resort

producing all price points and levels of luxury requested or required, are banded together again. “The real reason the Mecca works and continues to grow is a really great group of owners, managers and golf professionals who have vision and believe in working together in destination marketing,” said Paul Beachnau, executive director of the Mecca since its inception in 1987. “We keep getting better. Not only have we grown with the number of courses, but I feel like we get better at what we offer every year. You continue to see Mecca members improve their golf courses and properties with renovations, investment in additions and facilities, all the hard-work items that when you put it together make for a better experience for our visitors.” The Mecca’s current president, J.T. Aude, the head golf professional at Gaylord Golf Club, one of the original Mecca members, said the group has long realized that together they are stronger. “Together we all strive to offer quality and quantity and together we have unmatched price points, getaway golf, classic golf, resort golf, great country club style golf and some of the best-conditioned courses in the

country. While we are competitors, we know what’s best for all of us is to work together to be the best summer golf destination we can be.” The Mecca’s quality and quantity includes: • Black Lake Golf Club, with its award-winning Rees Jonesdesigned golf course. • Gaylord Golf Club that has been providing golf on classic pristine greens since 1924. • Garland Lodge & Golf Resort, which is home to four golf courses and is starting year 71 as a destination. • Indian River Golf Club, which bills itself accurately as the friendliest golf course in the north. • Lakes of the North Golf Club, a get-away-from-it-all spot that continues to improve its hidden-gem golf course. • The Pines Golf Course at Michaywe’, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary of providing classic and competitive golf this summer. in 2020 and the trend continued in 2021. In recent years, the Mecca has partnered with the Cherry Capital Airport in Traverse City and opened up new national markets, too. Beachnau feels a credibility in the Mecca brand has been established and maintained. “I believe only Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday has been together as a cooperative marketing effort in golf longer than the Mecca, and we have a bright future as long as we keep the quality of our great courses at a high level and keep working together,” Beachnau said. Gaylord, a Northern Michigan lumber town since the 19th century and known as the Alpine Village, started its

journey to being a U.S. golf destination in 1987. Harry Melling, a flamboyant auto industry supplier and NASCAR team owner who had earlier purchased a ski resort on the edge of town, unveiled the Masterpiece, the last major golf course design by the legendary architect, Robert Trent Jones Sr. The award-winning work by Jones attracted golfers to Treetops Resort, but also quickly put Gaylord in the national golf conversation as a muststop in the Midwest. The first year of the Mecca as a cooperative marketing group saw six area courses record 60,000 rounds of golf with revenues of $2 million. High water marks for the Mecca are now 300,000 rounds with revenues exceeding $17 million. “I never envisioned the growth we have today,” Beachnau said. “I imagined us to be reasonably successful in developing a cool niche of the golf market, but what it has led to in terms of the number of golf courses here in Gaylord and in Northern Michigan, the quality and the number of world class designers that have found us, that is just amazing.” Beachnau said it boils down to this: “We have 35 years of brand integrity and wonderful summers in Northern Michigan. Our best golf is in the summer when it’s too hot to play in other golf destinations. Come on up! Beat the heat!”

Florida Golfer gets a Mulligan from SI Joint and Low Back Pain For Robert Sexton, low back pain, shoulder issues and general injuries were par for the course. As a business owner working in golf travel, his injuries were hindering his ability to not only work, but to enjoy and excel in the sport he loves. Growing up in Michigan, Robert played ice hockey as a kid and today enjoys tennis, alpine skiing and water skiing between tee times. Participating in sports across different terrains, Sexton was no stranger to injuries, aches and pains. While water skiing a few years ago, Robert injured his left shoulder. This was coupled with low back pain he was experiencing that was preventing him from playing and practicing painfree. Robert was then referred by a friend to check out the experts at New Dimensions Wellness. Having been in alpine skiing accidents sustaining knee and calf injuries as well, getting pain-free and back to full strength was of utmost importance so Sexton could efficiently run his luxury golf travel company, Distincte Travel. “My shoulder has bothered me probably for six years. Let’s just say that shoulder has no pain in it at the moment, zero,” Robert said. “I came to New Dimensions with a couple of issues and I would say those issues are resolved. I’m relieved, surprised, almost shocked. I didn’t have to do any medical procedures. I can play golf now three, four, five days in a row without pain.” Upon coming in to New Dimensions, Robert’s imbalances were identified and addressed. His hips needed to be pulled into alignment and kept there, not just quickly adjusted and written off. “I noticed there was an imbalance in his hips and during his swing, his foot was not connecting well to his hip,” New Dimensions owner Brantley Hawkins said. “It was not only causing him to lose power and stability, but it was creating unwanted pressure and friction into the joints of his low back. Once aligned, stabilized and strengthened, he had more mobility in his swing, more power and was playing continuously without pain.” At New Dimensions, the mind-body connection is everything. Combining 36

Robert Sexton advance physical therapy and health treatments with elite fitness and performance training, the physical body is coupled with our thoughts and emotions to dive deeper into all aspects of health and performance. This superior wellness system has been written about in over 500 publications. Having been described as “incomparable to any gym, physical therapy clinic or health and wellness studio” by those who have experienced New Dimensions, owners Brantley Hawkins and Justin Cobb bring over 20 years of combined experience and techniques that look at the big picture, not just a portion of the body. Sexton dove head first into the program and immediately saw results. “Robert initially came in with SI joint pain, pain in his back after playing golf and even during his swings. He decided to jump head first into our program, our full mind-body-spirit

three phase program,” owner Justin Cobb said. “He quickly recognized that we had things for him that he didn’t even know he needed. He took to our mental program and after one session, won his tournament at Orange Tree Country Club. Our goal with him is to make him a champion.” Through advanced physical therapy, mental performance and group fitness sessions, Robert has reclaimed his body and approach to golf. He’s won tournaments, is able to practice regularly and can rely on his body to perform optimally. “My sports performance has improved, my body feels better. It’s a combination of performance, mental approach and physical maintenance I have not found anywhere else on this planet,” Sexton said. “New Dimensions has the expertise to maintain and improve my performance in golf and really, in life. I’d use the word miraculous.” Golf Central • Volume 22, Issue 12

Fundraising for Yours & One Other

Southwest Chapter Professionals at the SWC Day of Giving

Over the course of the past three months, the North Florida PGA has hosted events benefiting its charitable affiliate, Yours & One Other. Yours & One Other believes in the power of our Military programs that enhance the physical, mental, social, and emotional well-being of current and former members of the military. Yours & One Other believes in the power of play and the power of golf, and we trust its potential to enhance and transform lives at every age. Through Yours & One Other, we are able to serve people through various programs, most notably PGA HOPE, which provides adaptive training to military Veterans in Jacksonville, Orlando, Tampa, Sarasota and Citrus County. On January 31st, the West Central Chapter hosted a Pro-Am at Avila Golf & Country Club in Tampa. Twenty-six teams, consisting of one Professional and three Amateurs competed in the event. The team consisting of Jeffrey Leonard (The Club at Cheval), Chris Gibson, Michael Castelli and John Leto were victorious after finishing at -9 (133). A special dinner capped off the event with a feature presentation about the programs Yours & One Other provides. The event raised nearly $10,000! And if the money raised wasn’t enough, Josh Ellsworth made an ace on the fifth hole! On March 7th, Southwest Chapter Professionals came together to raise 46

money for various organizations, including Yours & One Other, during the SWC Day of Giving at TPC Prestancia. The team of Legacy Golf Club came out on top, finishing at -19 (53). For weeks leading up to the event, golf clubs in the Southwest region raced to raise funds, sparking a friendly competition as to which club can raise the most money! Some of the clubs that participated in fundraising included: Longboat Key Club, The Founders Golf Club, Pelican

Pointe, Legacy Golf Club, Tara Golf & Country Club and Stoneybrook Golf & Country Club. Southwest Chapter Members worked tirelessly to raise money and spread the word about the significance of their Day of Giving. Overall, the event raised $48,500! The next fundraising event for Yours & One Other will take place on April 18th at Hidden Hills Golf Club. It is the second consecutive year that the organization will be a part of the 1010-XL Sports Radio Googan Open.

Owned by the city of Boynton Beach, the Links are home to two public golf courses: an 18-hole par 71 championship course and a 9-hole par 30 executive course, better known as the “family course.” On top of being a family friendly destination, the courses are also environmentally sustainable as proven by their continued certification as Audubon International Cooperative Sanctuaries. The Links at Boynton Beach’s ACSP membership dates back to 2001 and marks the start of their environmental 50

every three years since then. In an excellent example of the positive impact sustainable management on golf courses can have on the environment, The Links put an important project into place after learning about the decline in local screech owl habitat due to growing developments, conversion of natural areas, and natural disasters.

The

screech owl, the smallest owl species found in Florida, is a cavity nesting bird which relies on holes made by other animals, or mother nature, to raise their young. Such cavities, like woodpecker holes in tree snags, can often be lost in hurricanes and land development. To mitigate for this, The Links at Boynton Beach installed screech owl nesting boxes

“The Links at Boynton Beach, together with the City of Boynton Beach, fully supports Audubon International and the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program. We are thrilled to continue our partnership to promote water conservation, environmental sustainability, and environmental outreach and education. We will continue our efforts to endorse Audubon International initiatives and are thankful for the support of the City of Boynton Beach, Audubon International, and the local community in creating a better environment for all.” Glen Landgraf, CGCS & Tommi Ylijoki, PGA, Links at Boynton Beach Golf Central • Volume 23, Issue 1

that mimic the natural cavities screech owls would seek in the wild. Boynton Beach’s habitat management efforts do more than just increase nesting opportunities for screech owls – they link directly to outreach and education by providing tours to community members and families. These guided tours cover different wildlife areas amongst the 27-holes on site and are hosted throughout the year. Perhaps their busiest tour day having been their Concert on the Green/Earth Day Celebration where they hosted 50 tours in 3 hours! The Links at Boynton Beach showcases how golf courses, wildlife, and the community all benefit from the sustainable management of golf courses. Meet Hope Arellano: The 18-Year-Old Dominating the Polo Field My “aha” moment came when I was just nine years old. After growing up on a polo field and watching my entire family play the sport, I knew that’s where I wanted to be: dominating goals on horseback as a fourthgeneration professional polo player. Even though women have been playing the sport since its inception, only recently have a handful of fieldblazing women proven that they can earn a living and add “professional” to their polo resume. It wasn’t necessarily easy for women to make a living and play polo as a career in the past. It’s just in the past few years that it’s really grown. But it’s a goal I’ve had from a young age.

Dan Haubein, GSC Pelican Pointe Golf & Country Club 2007–Present

SUPERSTAR What makes your business a “standout/outstanding?” Pelican Pointe G&CC is a 27-hole semiprivate residential golfing community that is situated roughly between I-75 and the Gulf of Mexico in Venice, Fl. Since this is a residential-golf community, homesites border many holes, but every hole is also bordered by a waterway, wooded native area, wetlands, preserves and a 100-acre Hatchett Creek Conservation area lies within the confines of the golf course which provides ample cover for a diverse wildlife population giving the course a natural feel.

Where are you from? Born Bangkok, Thailand (spent most of my formative years in Hawaii and Jacksonville, Florida)

How has PN helped you be successful (favorite products, programs, technical assistance, etc. )? Water quality is a big problem and the use of KaPre Exalt has helped during the dryer periods of the year releasing nutrient tie up flushing sodium from the root zone promoting a healthier plant when rain fall is at a minimum. Wilson Randolph and Glen Thompson have introduced other great products into our program like agra-rouse, Prudent 44, Pennamin Ca, Vibrant Green & Red just to name a few. Turf programs change throughout the year and they have the products to help adjust to those changes.

How did you get into the golf business? I was working for a grocery store chain Food Lion at the time and enrolled in a managers trainee program. One day while playing golf with a few high school buddies, they mentioned they had been working at TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra and job openings on the crew where available. At the time, I didn’t know how big-league TPC Sawgrass really was, but the idea of working outside and playing free golf sounded great. The rest is history.

Who is your mentor and why? I had the privilege of working and learning from many great individuals. Brad Tucker, Chris Neff, Larry Weber, and Ramon Perez just to name a few. Thank you, gentlemen. But two men that really gave a young kid a shot where Mitch Clark and Dan Stonionis. Mitch hired me as an Asst. Superintendent during his first Head Superintendents Job during a growin. Needless to say, I grew up quick and learned what hard work really was. Dan was a General Manager

54

that gave a 25-year-old his first head Superintendent position. Unfortunately, both men have since passed. I am very grateful to them for the opportunity to succeed in life. RIP Mitch & Dan. What advice would you give to someone starting out in the field? Leadership is a position of trust. Control your emotions and choose words wisely. Have passion for what you do, your actions are a mirror image on your club, course and staff. Be open-minded, respect and learn your staff. I would never ask anyone to perform a task that I haven’t done or wouldn’t do myself. Continue to educate yourself and those around you. Communicate.

SunnilandSUPERSpotlight: Colin McMahon and Kal Zaranec

Circling Raven Director of Golf Colin McMahon, PGA

The Coeur d’Alene Casino Resort Hotel and Circling Raven Golf Club today announce that Colin McMahon, PGA, and Kal Zaranec, GCSAA, have been appointed Director Golf and Head Superintendent, respectively, at the award-winning property. Most recently, McMahon was head golf professional at The Creek at Qualchan Golf Course (2017-2022), in Spokane, Wash. Prior to that, he was first assistant golf professional at Toscana Country Club in Indian Wells, Calif. A graduate of Spokane’s Gonzaga University, this is his first Director of Golf position. “Having worked and gone to school in Spokane, I’ve probably played Circling Raven close to 50 times,” said McMahon, who will turn 30 years old later this month. “Knowing two former golf professionals there, both good friends, I’ve learned a great deal about the golf club. It’s very popular and it never disappoints. This is a wonderful opportunity that the Coeur d’Alene Tribe and the Casino Resort has given me. I couldn’t be more motivated to help Circling Raven remain among the top golf clubs in the country and climb to new heights.” Golf Directors and Superintendents must work seamlessly together to ensure optimal conditions and operations. Hence, it’s fortuitous that McMahon becomes the golf 56

operations leader as Zaranec takes the helm of the agronomy staff. “Kal and I are starting a new era at Circling Raven,” said McMahon, the 2021 Inland Empire PGA Professional of the Year and 2021 Pacific Northwest PGA Section Merchandiser of the Year. “We get to put our stamp on operations and maintenance and doing so simultaneously is an ideal way to start the club’s next chapter in these areas.” Zaranec worked as Circling Raven’s first assistant superintendent prior to his promotion. He was first assistant superintendent at nearby Gozzer Ranch Golf and Lake Club prior to that. Working with golf courses and turf maintenance has been a lifetime endeavor for him. His uncle was a superintendent at a course in Texas where Zaranec started learning the craft at a young age. “I’ve known what I wanted to do since I was 10 or 11 years old,” said Zaranec, who graduated from The Ohio State University. “This is perfect timing to make this transition, and we’re committed to providing the exceptional course conditions for which Circling Raven is known.” Zaranec is currently in the Nufarm EXCEL Leadership superintendent mentorship program that participants must apply for. He believes the additional training he’s receiving is taking him to another level. “I’ve always known how important communicating well is,” said Zaranec. “But the program is showing me a whole new level, preparing me to communicate clearly, well and often with everyone from the executive department to our inseason staff of 29 team members.” McMahon and Zaranec begin

Circling Raven Head Superintendent Kal Zaranec, GCSAA their department leadership roles on the heels of a remarkable 2021 season at Circling Raven.

Some golf club achievements included: 1. Surpassing $1 million in golf shop merchandise sales for the first time 2. Increasing the number of rounds played and revenue while maintaining superb playing conditions 3. Undertaking some course and supporting facility improvements 4. Regaining the No. 1 public course ranking in Idaho and climbing in Top 20 Casino Courses list nationally 5. Garnering praise from the professional tour players who competed in the inaugural Circling Raven Championship 6. Promoting cultural tourism activities offered by the casino resort and mesh them with golf package messaging 7. Leveraging golf to empower youth and Native Americans while operating in a manner that honors Tribal values “We are confident that Colin and Kal will thrive in their new positions,” said Laura Penney, CEO, Coeur d’Alene Casino Resort Hotel. “We’re excited to have them help Circling Raven continue providing our guests with an exceptional golf experience.” Visit www.cdacasino.com/ golf for more information on golf and other resort options. A Turf Pirate’s Journal

By Anthony L. Williams, MG, CGCS, CGM

Turf Pirate Artifacts: Lapel Pins Greetings Turf Pirates from the Galactic Headquarters of the Ancient and Honorable tribe of Turf Pirates. I hope that your efforts are full of energy (and results) as we wax on and wax off about the intricacies of Turf Piracy. It has come to my attention that there are some Turf Pirates that were not aware of the existence of artifacts that indeed trace the travels and triumphs of many acknowledged

Turf Pirates so therefore this month brothers and sisters we shine the light of truth on Lapel Pins and their official artifact status with the tribe. Turf Pirates as a whole are well traveled and as previously disclosed they support a variety of endeavors and causes with extreme effort. This creates the need to display micro flags (Lapel Pins) of those things supported and/or experienced. In

my many years of Turf Pirating the Micro Flags that are dearest to me are given a shadow box (see photo one) for valor and display. I have so many micro flags after four decades of Turf Piracy that you might think that I have stopped collecting them but of course a true Turf Pirate never tires of collecting anything that has been deemed of value. The photo represents a fraction of the collection and ones I wear at gatherings of the faithful from the various walks or causes I have supported over the years. It has been suggested that we need an official Turf Pirate Micro flag but the motion remains in committee. There is always a mix of history and achievement within anything that is truly collectable so I picked a few of my stand out micro flags (see photo two) for an example of the roads I’ve traveled. Starting at 12 O’clock moving clockwise. The first item is my BIGGA Master Greenkeeper pin given for my status as Master Greenkeeper #82 in
