Open Invitation Since its inception 23 years ago,
I have always had one goal in publishing Golf Central Magazine; to make golf more fun, less intimidating, inclusive, more diverse, and enjoyable for everyone. The variety of our features, special sections, and fun profiles, such as Cart Girl and Bachelor of the Month, have reflected that along with the countless stories we have shared about the people who are making a difference and shaping the game for future generations to play. Golf continues to evolve and grow alongside the industry and its organizations which lead the way. In 2018, the LPGA Women’s Network and the industry consortium We Are Golf launched the campaign, #inviteHER, to encourage more women to play golf. According to the National Golf Foundation, the percentage of women on the course rose to 25% in 2021, up from 19% a decade ago. Even more exciting is the jump among junior golfers, where more than 35%, or 1.1 million, are girls, compared to 15% in 2000. On January 1, 2019, officials from the USGA and R&A, golf’s governing bodies, released a new and modernized version of the Rules of Golf. This represented the most sweeping changes in the rules in 60 years. Common sense infractions were eliminated, and the rules (reduced from 34 to 24) were simplified and made easier to understand improving the pace of play and making golf more fun. Kudos to the USGA and R&A! Recently, another bold move by golf industry icon ClubCorp, the 65-year-old privately held lifestyle and hospitality company with a portfolio of 151 owned and operated golf and country clubs, announced its rebranding roll-out with a new name and corporate vision, “Invited.” The word “INVITE” is not new for me. Perhaps it’s my effervescent Tennessean nature, but I love sharing everything good about this game and have made it my personal mission to make the game more fun and inclusive. I enjoy everything about golf - the atmosphere, the environment, the beauty - and most of all the people, the players, and the volunteers. My invitation remains open (as it always has). Whether I’m in Tennessee, Georgia, Florida or the Carolinas, come tee it up with me. One sweet whiff of that freshly cut green grass and you will be hooked forever.

We so enjoy our events with Golf Central Magazine. We had another successful day of achieving our mission of Ovarian Cancer Awareness and raising funds for much needed cancer research. AdventHealth was the big winner at the end of the days activities that included the $5,000 Putting Contest, Raffles and Silent Auction. Many of the sponsors were on hand to display their products. We had 50 States Vodka giving some very cool vodka (Azalia Drinks) samples for everyone. The craft vodka is a partnership with former Michigan running back Gerald White. Gerald enjoyed the time with our supporters talking about the new business venture. We also had a mermaid at the event! Yes, Emily Alexandra Emily, The American Mermaid, formerly known as The Florida Mermaid. Through her years being a diver, mermaid, and ocean conservationist, Emily decided to create a cosmetic 10
line that not only was good for your skin but safe for the oceans and coral reefs. Also participating with a very cool auction item, were the folks from Ice Cream Sunscreen that started creating products to make healthy skin protection from the sun a fun and playful thing to do. We would to congratulate Greg Wise on being the finalist for the Putting Contest sponsored by AloeMD. Chris Hardy from AloeMD made sure all of the putting contest qualifiers had a sample of their new product AloeMD Plus, a patented formula that helps reduce pain and inflammation quickly. All activities were hosted again by Mercedes-Benz of North Orlando, both Walter Grundorf and Wayne McShane were on hand to highlight their dealership. Although the Cajun French version of “let the good times roll” was developed in the French Quarter of New Orleans… I felt compelled to borrow this term for your trip around Louisiana and the joie de vivre (joy of living) that truly explains our love of the game of golf. Louisiana is a “Sportsman’s Paradise” for fishing, or hunting, but golfers have nothing to fear, when it comes down to ample… quality, challenging golf – all around the state. The Louisiana Golf Trails was developed to connect golfers with other experiences in Louisiana. Look… we all know that golf is a simple 4-hour game (that might be thinking a little too optimistically, or could share some of my personal sarcasm), so what do you do with the balance of your time. A study not long ago found that Louisiana was the nation’s happiest state. Want to make me happy? Serve up some fresh Gulf seafood or boudin, or even andouille sausage gumbo… and although I may have just shot well above my normal score on the golf course… I am going to have a smile on my face as I bite into a fresh hot Beignet. White Rocks Ingredients: • 1.5 oz. Grey Coast Irish Whiskey • 2 oz. fresh grapefruit juice • 2 oz. ginger ale • 3 dashes Angostura bitters • Grapefruit slice In a mixing glass, add all ingredients (except for ginger ale) and shake well with ice. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass with ice and top with ginger ale. Garnish with grapefruit slice. Enjoy.

Grey Coast Irish Whiskey • 1 orange wheel • 1 lemon wheel • 2 oz. ginger ale • 2 oz. tonic water • 3 dashes Angostura bitters Muddle the orange and lemon wheels in a highball glass. Fill the glass with ice cubes. Pour whiskey into the glass, top with equal parts ginger ale and club soda. Garnish with a lemon slice. Enjoy.

On Course Foundation Kicks Off Annual Fundraising Campaign On Course Foundation kicked off its annual fundraising campaign during Military Appreciation Month (May) to benefit wounded veterans who use golf as a vehicle for physical and mental recovery, and harvest newfound confidence into careers in golf. Corporate and individual contributions of financial and business resources are earmarked to expand On Course Foundation’s impact in new regional markets across America. The organization currently conducts free programs in 15 states which help active and retired, injured Service members develop golf business and playing skills. Sponsors include Apollo Wealth Management, Barclays, Charles Schwab, CSX, J.P. Morgan, KPMG, Callaway, Clubessential and Summit Golf Brands. Countless individual donors also salute the military, the game of golf and vastly improving lives which otherwise would have spiraled downward. “Golf is an extremely powerful tool,” says John Simpson, Founder of On Course Foundation and former agent to Nick Faldo and 17 major tournament winners. “The support we receive betters those who sacrifice their lives for our freedom; they go from unhappy to happy, and their transformations to enjoy family, professional, social, financial and athletic aspects of life are incredible beyond words.”

also learn playing skills with many achieving low, single-digit handicaps and qualifying for the annual Simpson Cup where U.K. and U.S. teams square off in Ryder Cup-style matches. Testament to On Course Foundation programming is Shad Newton, a National Guard veteran who sustained traumatic brain injury and right hip nerve damage in combat in Afghanistan: “The organization saved my life. It got me out of the house and on the course with my brothers and sisters in arms; otherwise, I would have ended my life a long time ago. Aside from golf; what do you prefer for fun and relaxation? Bass fishing. What golf apparel do you like to wear? Greyson shirts and Peter Millar or Dunning shorts and pants. Whom do you most admire for their inner and outer beauty? My momma and my sister What three things would you need to survive on a deserted island? Beef, water, and music. Who would you like to have with you on the same deserted island; and why? My oldest and dearest friend Luke. He’s always been able to show me different perspectives of the same situation and he’s very resourceful and jovial. Also, my current main squeeze whose name shall remain anonymous. Just hearing her voice and feeling her presence or looking at her makes me happy. What do you find to be the most annoying habit people demonstrate on the golf course? Whining. I love drinking wine, but I hate listening to it.
Where were you born? Did you grow up there? Tampa, Florida born and raised. Is “acting your age” overrated? For sure, I think it’s preposterous to relate a mentality with a number. What do you do for a living? Caddie What would you like to do for a living? I always dreamed of being a Navy seal, a fighter pilot, or an MLB umpire. 18
Name the three most important things to you in this world. My mother, my sister, and my ability to learn and grow from all of the bad decisions and mistakes I’ve made. Given the choice; would you select love, success, or money to keep yourself happy? Before I reached enlightenment, I would have said money. But now that I have found inner peace, I can deal without any of these. What do you fear the most? Disappointing my family.

What three people would you most like to play with in your fantasy golf foursome? Alistair McKenzie, Moe Norman, and Tiger. What are some of your great accomplishments? Recognizing and addressing my mental health issues from the past. Relaxed evening at home, or nightclub and cocktails? I mean I don’t mind the occasional trip to the nightclub but home is where the heart is. Last time you spewed something through your nose from laughing so hard? Oh boy! I’m sure it happened in the last couple days. This is something I do often because I’m constantly eating or drinking while I drive and listening to podcasts. Favorite comedian? Dave Chappelle and Ron White.

Last book you read? To Kill a Mockingbird in 8th grade is the only book I can remember reading start to finish. I’ve always had poor reading comprehension skills and too much energy to sit still to try to learn or improve them. News, current events; hardcopy or on-line? I don’t keep up with anything mainstream because everyone is so biased, I can’t stand it. Favorite charity to support? I like to support the homeless in Tampa. This isn’t an actual charity I just go find them when I have clothes, shoes, and occasionally beer and food to give to them. What else would you like for us to know about you? I’m a little shocked and very honored at your interest in me for your magazine.

A Club with a Successful Real Estate Program adds Membership Sales, Delivers Consistant Branding and becomes a Lucrative Income Stream Coming out of the Covid Hangover, many private clubs have witnessed a spectacular phenomenon with membership and home sales. The frenzy continues in several areas of the country, and we have not experienced any drop of momentum, maybe a leveling off to the market. The question hangs out there, did you and your club benefit from this trend? Membership waiting lists are longer than ever at most clubs and the wait time could be 10+ years before prospective members are able to join. The flurry of home sales inside gated golf communities since the pandemic hit have been unprecedented. In the last 2 quarters of 2020 and all of 2021 home sales reached unheard values and any decent property to hit the market was gobbled up with buyers paying well over 170% of the list price in some locations. 22
In 2022, an inventory shortage resulting from the rage the year prior has slowed the number of transactions; however, prices are soaring in many locations. So, what does this mean to the private club? Clubs that have an on-site real estate operation experienced an incredible profit. Board Members and Club Managers are hearing about this success and are looking into the opportunities of developing their own real estate operation. It’s hard to get in at a course and be able to teach right off the bat. I have a great Ladies Clinic on Monday mornings and a junior program thanks to them. What is your favorite part of being a cart girl? Interacting with the public. My Saturday & Sunday morning skins groups are very good to me. We are Family!! Smokehouse Corn Chef Jeff Palermo – 4 Rivers Smokehouse Serves 8- 10 Ingredients: 12 Ears Fresh Corn, or two 16-ounce bags frozen sweet corn 1/2 Cup Scallions, white part only 1/3 Cup Olive Oil 1 Clove Garlic, finely minced 1/4 Cup Scallions, green part only 1 Can Rotel Original diced tomatoes and green chilies 1/3 Cup Cilantro, chopped Taste Coarse Salt Taste Freshly Ground Pepper Procedure: Shuck corn and shear off kernels with a sharp knife over a bowl; set aside. Discard cobs. Sauté scallion whites in olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Reduce heat, stir in garlic and sauté for 2 minutes being careful not to brown. Add scallion tops and sauté for 1 minute. Stir in corn and cook for 8 to minutes or until heated through. Season with salt and pepper. Add Rotel tomatoes and simmer for 10 minutes. Stir in cilantro; adjust seasoning to taste. Serve hot. Chef’s Tip: Add a couple of tablespoons of sugar while simmering if corn isn’t quite sweet enough. Golf Central • Volume 23, Issue 2

Bartow Golf Course Continues After 100 years As One of Florida’s Top Public Golf Courses A Florida Historic Golf Trail Club Tucked within the
city limits of Bartow in Polk County, Florida, just 38 miles east of Tampa, sits a sporty but challenging golf course that is proud to be part of the Florida Historic Golf Trail. Bartow Golf Course, a linksstyle design built in the 1920s, has remained true to its original mission of providing quality affordable golf and excellent food offerings to residents and visitors. Today, this well maintained jewel of a course offers an enjoyable golf experience for players of all ability levels. The Par 72 course, thought to be designed in part by Donald Ross, features four sets of tees ranging from 5200 yards to 6600 yards with no homes to interfere with the natural vistas. Known to area golfers as the “TOW,” the layout blends naturally with stands of oaks and multiple water hazards and also is a peaceful haven for a variety of wildlife. The small elevated greens have been preserved in keeping with the course’s original traditional style. As part of an ongoing upgrade program to attract more golfers, Bartow recently installed a new irrigation system that covers the footprint of the course. Four new forward tees on holes 3, 8, 13 and 18 also were added and new sand was replaced in all the bunkers.

A MISSISSIPPI MASTERPIECE The template is straight out of a Faulkner novel: the lush landscape featuring magnolias sharing ground with pecan groves and majestic oak and pine trees blanketed over rolling ridges. Those ridges are dotted with large lakes, winding streams and marshes hosting a wealth of flora and fauna. That template is what renowned golf architect Tom Fazio had at his disposal when he crafted the award-winning Fallen Oak, MGM Resorts International’s answer to an exclusive golf experience unmatched by any course in the Southeast. Located in Coastal Mississippi between New Orleans, Louisiana and Mobile, Alabama on a 510-acre plot adjacent to the De Soto National Forest, sits this naturalist’s dream. Fallen Oak presents golfers a picturesque and challenging experience that combines Southern charm and ambiance with golf at the highest caliber. In addition to removing excess moisture, It allows for the exchange of hostile gases and moisture out of the soil and helps stimulate the flow of oxygen – a key product of photosynthesis. Such is his respect for the inherent beauty of the existing terrain that Fazio designed the paved cart paths – which wind across 10 wooden bridges that span the wetlands – to be hidden. Plans
are in place this summer to resurface all bridges and decking. “MGM Resorts’ Mississippi masterpiece will undergo several enhancements in 2022 to continue to raise the bar on the Fallen Oak experience,” said Director of Agronomy Matt Hughes. “We have evaluated each of the bridges and the cart paths and we will be upgrading them this year,” said Hughes. “Most of the damage that occurs on the paths are from tree roots expanding underneath the cart paths. The roots lift and create voids where breaks occur. We will be removing some trees to help prevent new panels from breaking, but this will not interfere with Fazio’s design intent or playability.” “We are currently looking at new bunker sand to use in all the bunkers and have been evaluating numerous sands. LOVE & LEGACY: REMEMBERING GENE SILLER
Gene Siller tragically passed at Pinetree Country Club. Almost one year later, his legacy of service lives on. TRAGEDY ROCKS THE GEORGIA GOLF COMMUNITY On July 3, 2021, Gene Siller was murdered on the tenth hole of Pinetree Country Club where he served as Director of Golf. When his staff alerted him of a white pickup truck near the tenth green, he was the first to investigate. In a tragic case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time, Siller encountered a crime in progress and was shot and killed. A humble, generous and wellloved man, Siller’s death was felt throughout the golf world. His wife, Ashley, was determined to preserve his legacy for their two sons to remember their father. 40

THE GENE SILLER MEMORIAL GRANT Immediately following Gene’s death, the Siller Family received an outpouring of support. A GoFundMe campaign set up by Pinetree Country Club member Dianne McPherson raised thousands of dollars to support Gene’s family. Ashley was adamant that the funds should be used to share Gene’s love for golf and commitment to mentorship. Out of a tragedy, the Gene Siller Memorial Grant was born. The Gene Siller Memorial Grant or “Red Pants Grant”, an homage to Gene’s flashy wardrobe and the red pants he wore on the day
his passing, was established to provide financial assistance to Georgia-based junior golfers. The grant seeks to support underserved youth looking to learn, play and compete in golf. In the first year of the grant’s existence, over 20 juniors applied to receive the inaugural grants which will be awarded in June of 2022. The Siller Family looks forward to award multiple $3,000 grants to support the golf pursuits of several Georgia youth.

The Cadillac Invitational, held at Fiddlesticks Country Club in Fort Myers, raised $10,000 for the South Florida PGA Foundation. Patty Berg Pro-Am raises $29,000 for college scholarships The 45th Annual Patty Berg Pro-Am Golf Tournament, held at Cypress Lake Golf Club, raised $29,000 to support scholarship programs for young golfers in Southwest Florida. This year’s tournament attracted a sold-out field of 72 members and 24 professional golfers to Cypress Lake Golf Club, a pristine private course in Fort Myers that offers subtle contours of the land, distinctive natural features and plentiful wildlife. Proceeds from the Patty Berg ProAm support the Patty Berg Scholarship Program through the Southwest Florida Junior Golf Association, which provides well-rounded youth golfers with college scholarships. Recipients must be SWFJGA members for at least three years and display good sportsmanship, a positive attitude, citizenship and competitive courage. “The Patty Berg Pro-Am is a great way our members and sponsors can come together and give back to the local community,” said Jon Pazdera, the club’s director of golf. “Golf clubs across Southwest Florida host a variety of fundraising events, but the Pro-Am has a

Today, Cypress Lake Golf Club is home to the world’s largest collection of Berg’s artifacts and memorabilia after the golfer permanently loaned a collection of her trophies, medals, plaques, photos and other historic relics. Born of necessity, Tour Aim targets one of golf’s most common problems

ne of the breakthrough products at the 2022 PGA Merchandise Show in Orlando was a training aid called Tour Aim. Like many golf training products, Tour Aim was designed by a frustrated avid golfer, turned inventor and CEO. Marriott’s Gaylord Springs Golf Links makes sustainable strides as an Audubon International Cooperative Sanctuary
The City of Nashville is synonymous with entertainment, country music and southern hospitality…but to many people’s surprise, Nashville also boasts many prestigious golf venues. Only a few miles from the hustle and bustle of NASHVILLE’S Broadway, lies an 18-hole golf course that is synonymous with environmental stewardship, Marriott’s Gaylord Springs Golf Links. The Scottish links-style course is nestled alongside the Cumberland River and borders numerous wetlands. Marriott Golf recognizes their sensitive location and makes tremendous efforts to operate in a sustainable fashion. So much so that the Marriott Golf team pursued and achieved certification as an Audubon International Cooperative Sanctuary for Golf. In 2019, Gaylord Springs Golf Links became an environmental leader amongst the city’s public golf courses and successfully achieved certification in all 6 ACSP for Golf focus areas: environmental planning, chemical use reduction and safety, water conservation, water quality management, wildlife and habitat management, and outreach and education. Wildlife on the course While playing Gaylord Springs Golf Links be sure to keep your eyes peeled for any one of the 30+ species that can be seen including eagles, Carolina chickadees, blue-winged teals, and many more raptors and songbirds. Supplemental habitat structures like blue bird and owl boxes, along with an osprey platform can be seen throughout. These structures are monitored regularly by staff and play a crucial role in restoring and maintaining the local populations of these species. Best Management Practices Reduce Inputs One of the most responsible measures a golf course can make is to incorporate Best Management Practices (BMPs) into their day-today management. These efforts reduce the property’s environmental footprint by following responsible practices such as reducing pesticide and water use. To accomplish this, Gaylord Springs transitioned 6-acres of managed turf to drought and disease tolerant native grasses. This effort will not only minimize inputs but also expands habitat and food sources for many native species. In addition, during the cooler months, the property chooses not to overseed turf, thereby minimizing cultural practices and reducing irrigation requirements. SUPERSTAR Where are you from? Melbourne, FL
How did you get into the golf business? I started at Aquarina raking bunkers 12 years ago, after the course had been closed for several years. It didn’t take me long to realize just how much goes into maintaining a golf course. Growing up playing the course at its best, I knew I wanted to be a part of bringing it back to that level. I paid attention and learned as much as I could about the superintendent job that I ultimately wanted to have. Now I hope to use the knowledge and experience I’ve gained to keep the course in the best condition possible.
What advice would you give to someone starting out in the field? Try not to get overwhelmed by the things that are out of your control, everything is not always going to run smoothly. Keep your eyes and ears open to learn as much as you can about all the different moving parts of this profession. If you can’t figure something out, don’t be afraid to ask the more experienced people for help. There is so much information out there right now at your disposal, continuing education is key to progressing in this profession. Finally, make sure to take some time to play and enjoy the golf course you put so much work into.
What makes your course “stand out/outstanding”? The course was built right in the middle of a nature preserve, with an abundance of different wildlife on every hole. Even though it is only a par 62 course, there are many difficult aspects to it. Whether you are trying to carry 150 yards of mangroves or cut corners on drivable par 4’s, every hole has a unique challenge. I like that the golf course is owned and run by all Aquarina residents. Many of them volunteer on the course and as board members, helping to improve it and the surrounding community.

I would like to mention Mike Rowe (the superintendent that oversaw the grow-in of Aquarina’s golf course) with Golf Ventures, who was the first to suggest I try out some of these products.
Who is your mentor and why? I wouldn’t have been able to succeed in this position without the knowledge and training from the superintendents I have worked under. Jim Moller, Ollie Rhodes, and Mike Thornton, all showed me throughout the years the dos and don’ts of running a golf course. I will always appreciate their guidance. Overall though my greatest mentors have been my parents, Ron and Becky Holmes. They have always been there for me personally and professionally, to offer advice and point me in the right direction. I would not be here without their unconditional support. 54

of Cook County is a family-owned turf farm focused on a quality product with customer service as an equal priority. Pike Creek Turf’s inception was made possible in 1989 with the vision and support of the patriarch of the family, Jimmy Allen. Jimmy credits the strong family bond as the main reason Pike Creek Turf has experienced success over the past 33 years. As part owner of Pike Creek Turf, he and his family run a very successful business providing quality turfgrass to clients all over the world. Jimmy and his wife, Quay, have been happily married for 59 years. “It is Quay’s support through the years that has enabled me to do what I have done. I certainly could not have accomplished any of this without her by my side,” he said. In addition to Quay’s help, their children and children’s spouses own and work for Pike Creek Turf. Their son, Jaimie Allen, runs the farm operations, and their daughter, Kim Allen Boling manages the office, personnel, collections, and marketing. Kim’s husband, Dake Boling, laser grades, fumigates, oversees field preparation, and plants the turfgrass fields on the farm. Jaimie’s wife, Lynne Allen, oversees administrative tasks. Surrounding the 72-acre pond, all three families live and work on the farm. Across the pond, they built the cottage and barn to host turf conferences, events and seminars at Pike Creek Turf.
Jimmy’s Life Jimmy was born and raised in Tifton, Georgia and has been working from the early age of 9-years-old when his mother got him a job delivering the newspaper for The Tifton Gazette. He said his mother taught him a lot of 56

After six years running the paper route, he took a job washing cars at a service station in high school. While in high school, Jimmy was president of a state-widerecognized Key Club, and he played golf and baseball. He was offered golf scholarships to the University of Georgia and Georgia Tech, but he decided to play baseball at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College (ABAC)
in Tifton during his freshman year. “While attending ABAC, I met my wife who I married within a year. One year after we were married, Jaimie was born. Then, 14 months later, Kim was born. Life was moving fast as we were 20 years old with two children,” Jimmy said. He transferred to Valdosta State College and graduated second in his class with a degree in accounting. While there, Jimmy played in a professional golf mini-tour where Golf Central • Volume 23, Issue 2

Due to his respect for his parent’s convictions of not playing golf on Sundays, he decided not to pursue professional golf after college. Instead of pursuing a career in golf, Jimmy went to work for Georgia Power. The Allen family moved to Atlanta for two years where he worked through an IBM training program as a potential management trainee. Next, he prepared for the CPA Exam by attending a CPA Review Course at the University of South Carolina. After passing the CPA exam, they moved back to Tifton where he opened his accounting practice. His firm quickly grew to 20 Certified Public Accountants and a staff of 40 employees.
Transition to Turfgrass While in college, Jimmy had earned a minor in forestry. During his accounting career, he used his knowledge to acquire land. He began searching for land, purchasing properties plentiful with timber, and selling the timber to replant new trees. “I had substantial land assets, and I could start a business with what I had accumulated from my accounting firm investments,” Jimmy said. Jaimie also earned an accounting degree, like his father. He graduated from the University of Georgia and worked for six months at the firm before telling Jimmy he wanted to farm. Since they had accumulated farmland over Golf Central • Volume 23, Issue 2
the past several years as investments, they had what they needed to start a turfgrass business. In 1989, they started Pike Creek Turf, planting 80 acres of turfgrass. The first few years Jimmy assisted Jaimie in running the pivot irrigation systems on the weekends. Eventually, they hired enough staff to operate the farm efficiently. In 1993, following her five-year employment at Tift Regional Hospital, Kim joined the family business. She brought a different perspective to the company with a four-year degree in Clinical Psychology and a Master’s Degree in Industrial Organizational Psychology from Valdosta State College. “My education as well as my work experience sufficiently prepared me to assist my family in the daily operations as well as the overall company decisions. I truly entered a different dynamic where I saw the world from an entirely new perspective when I began my journey with my family at Pike Creek Turf,” Kim expressed. Jimmy retired from accounting and sold his firm in 1996. He decided to utilize the marketing skills he had acquired during his time as an accountant. He began assisting in the area of marketing for Pike Creek Turf. Pike Creek negotiates roughly 100 contracts per year. Pike Creek Turf’s full-time traveling
salesman is Bruce Allison, who has over 40 years of experience in the turf industry. Jimmy explained that Bruce does an excellent job of visiting people. He invites customers to come to the farm for a farm tour and stay at the cottage to see the turfgrass for their project. “While at the farm, we show the customers the genetic purity that we grow in our grass, which is the key to our marketing plan. We fumigate all of our fields with methyl bromide gas. Welcome back Turf Pirates! I trust that you are well into another successful golf season and that you’re working on extending your Turf Pirate skills and legacy. I have been receiving a few inquiries in regards to the actual rules (More Like Suggestions) embraced by the Ancient and Honorable Tribe of Turf Pirates. For Example, Is there an actual list of rules? The short answer is YES! There are at last glance 35 rules in various stages of vetting and while these are very important to a Turf Pirate it is more important to note that Turf Pirates are generally free spirits and reserve the right of situational necessity to truly state if a rule was properly applied or necessary for that matter. That said, I thought in the spirit of edification we should once again cover a few of the rules. Note: there has never been a public release of all 35 Rules as they are always changing, not to mention the fact the Ancient
and Honorable Tribe of Turf Pirates are as a whole an elusive group operating on the edges of the known world. Here a few of the stable rules/guidelines from the galactic headquarters. Rule #25 No Regrets. An obvious axiom for any Turf Pirate or person of worth is to live in such a way that you have no regrets. This rule reminds us to be decisive and fair in all our dealings, personal and professional. Having no regrets as a focus is liberating as you stay in the present with an eye on the future and are not anchored with a stereotype or a negative experience from your past. Turf Pirates understand that each day must be challenged with 100% commitment to your journey and if done properly the synergy you create will amass a positive energy flow of hurricane proportions. No Regrets is more than words it is a waypoint that once embraced makes true joy not just possible but constant.

A not so rare photo of a Turf Pirate on Bourbon Street Rule #32 Travel and See New Worlds. It seems apparent that all Turf Pirates love to travel and it’s through wandering that we develop a deep love of food, spirits, culture and history. Ports of call vary from great turf and green spaces to festivals and celebrations. Bourbon Street in New Orleans’ French Quarter (see the attached photo of one of my Turf Pirate Walk-Abouts to this iconic destination) for example has lured Turf Pirates into extended adventures for years. There is a great Turf Pirate legend about Bourbon street muggers and one of the key note speakers for the 25th TOCA annual meeting held at the Hotel Monteleone, a famous hangout for legendary literary pirates, but that is another story. Travel expands your mind and perspective, so pack light and hit the road. Remember Turf Pirates that life is what you make and that the spirit of the rule is more important than the letter of law.
