Each and every one of us either knows someone or was personally affected by Hurricane Ian. Yet the bands of any hurricane will never be as strong as the band of brothers and sisters that golf course superintendents share in their time of need. After months of pummeling rain that left so many golf courses a soggy mess the very last thing we needed was a hurricane that made fairways look like water hazards and greens unputtable. But Mother Nature marches to the beat of her own drum (so do I) and left us to deal with one of the worst storms in history. Several facilities took big time hits. Others not quite as bad but still much more than a small bump in the road. But bumps are encountered every day. And when its more than a bump we band together with an unbreakable spirit of togetherness to help each other out as best we can. From sharing tips and tricks to sharing equip ment to whatever else is needed, by working together we ensure that the journey we are on is never lost, just slightly delayed. And when we come back again, we don’t just show up but come back stronger and wiser, because of the journey we took together. We rebuild because that’s what our community does. We rebuild because that is what our community expects. We rebuild because golf is an important part of many people’s lives.

we can..together we will …and soon enough we will say together we have.

Introducing the Ultimate Roller Makef ield Putters

down time as well. He spent it as many of us did during lockdown, online, watching YouTube and researching favorite past times.

Golf has been a part of Everett’s life since he was 11. His father was a PGA Rules Official and avid golfer. This introduction to golf immediately stuck, and Everett has monitored the evolution of the game and its nuances ever since. He even still has his first Ping putter, bought for him in 1968, by his father.

A deep dedication to family. A love of the game of golf. Decades of engineering experience. YouTube. Covid lockdown. A family car ride.

Typically, the pieces to a puzzle simply fit, or make sense. Makefield’s story is anything but typical. Those six seemingly random factors led Everett Farr, an engineer and inventor, to take a deep dive into the science of putters.

As Covid lockdowns were implemented, the aid for Everett’s adult autistic son could no longer provide assistance. He chose to leave work early every day to help his wife at home. Along with this added family time, came some newfound

Given his background, changes to equipment and technology have stood out to him over the years. For this reason, his focus turned to promotional videos and reviews, specifically putters. Countless videos from numerous brands later, he found the engineering principles in these clubs to be lacking compared to what is invested in other pieces of equipment. Taking what he found valuable from these videos, in connection with his expertise, factors such as weighting,

balance, spin and skid, alignment and shaft angle resonated with him.

Armed with the concept to design a better performing flat stick, Everett felt he had a head start on accomplishing this through another company he helped create. Matt Fuchs and he started Lehdrex back in 2020. Their specialization in 3D computer modeling and fabrication gave Everett and Matt an advantage in designing their initial model. A year was spent testing various metrics. The prototype found it’s way into the hands of Michael Little, PGA, a two-time Philadelphia Section Player of the Year. Michael’s input and golf experience, in unison with the engineering concepts of Everett and Matt, produced an extremely high performing putter.

The concept was well thought out, the prototype of the highest performance, but neither the company, nor the putter had a name. The origin of the Makefield name is very close to Everett’s heart. It was on a car ride through Bucks County with his family that they spotted a road sign, for Lower Makefield. Uttering the word “Makefield” all at once, ‘make’ is what a putter is designed for, and in a golf tournament you play against a ‘field’ Everett

thought. Makefield Putters was born.

Vince Sullivan was Everett’s dear friend, teacher and mentor. An extraordinary individual and respected professional golfer, Everett felt it only fitting to name Makefield’s maiden putter the V-S, in Vince’s memory.

Ten months after debuting at the PGA Show, Everett and his team are striving to change the game when it comes to putters, putter fittings and putter education. As the 14th Annual Presidents Cup ended… we congratulate the American Team, with Captain Davis Love III, on a decisive win over the International Team, headed by Captain Trevor Immel man.

For the first time in its 25-year history, the Presidents Cup was contested in the Southeast and utilized the Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Hail, Hail… The U.S.A.

Taking the top 12 player in America on the PGA Tour and matching them to the top 12 International players is a daunting task to say the least. Now put ting them on a golf course that will test every shot from these Titans… and you begin to get the feel of the Presidents Cup.

The format for the 4-day event is equally challenging for the players and their Captains to select the players best suited to each other. Over the course of 4-day… the teams would play 30 matches.

Probably one of the most difficult things to do in Team Competition is the Alternate Shot portion, as you never know where you are going to hit your shot from.

Max Homa, giving Tony Finau a hard time during round one… “You meant to put me in the bunker… what’s the mat ter with you.”

But all in all, it is the fan experience while attending these PGA Tour events. The food… the connection to the play ers… the corporate connection to the community. Citi Interactive Zone had one of the stronger commitments to the fan experience… providing a putting

green, playing for prizes and an indoor interaction tent to provided many thing to occupy the time during the event.

It is “All About the Fans” and sharing their love of country and golf.

The Presidents Cup will return for the second time to The Royal Montreal Golf Club in 2024.

Founded in 1873, The Royal Montreal Golf Club is the oldest golf club in North America. Its Blue Course was designed by Dick Wilson and recently updated by Rees Jones in 2004 and 2005. In addi tion to hosting the Presidents Cup, The Royal Montreal Golf Club has also held the RBC Canadian Open on 10 occasions, with the most current being in 2014.

Where did you grow up? Virginia Beach, VA

Which group of people did you associate most with in high school? I went to a small private school with a graduating class of only 11 people so there weren’t really any groups to choose from.

What do you feel makes this club special? I like the friendly happy atmosphere.

What is your favorite part of being a cart girl? What is your least favorite part? I love the freedom of being outside and not behind a desk. My least favorite part is how brutally hot the summers get.

If you weren’t a cart girl, what would you be doing? Well, before I started working here I was modeling full-time, so maybe that or starting my own business.

What is your memorable moment working as a cart girl? That’s a tough one, probably when I went in the clubhouse a group of golfers that played earlier in the day were eating lunch and they all started singing to me, the whole restaurant was staring.

What is the funniest thing you’ve ever seen on the golf course? A golfer was trying to get his golf ball out of a tree so he was throwing his golf club in the air, and ended up getting that stuck, too.

What type of music do you prefer? It really just depends on my mood, but my go to is country.

What hobbies do you enjoy? Hanging out with my daughter and fiancé, shopping, yoga , going to the beach, cooking, and I love movies.

What is your idea of “the perfect date”? For a day date, probably Disney World. For evening, a really nice restaurant with amazing food and beautiful views.

Favorite type of movie? Romantic comedies 100%

Favorite charity to support? St. Jude’s

What else would you like for us to know about you? I am a friendly, happy person and I enjoy my job!

Jekyll Island Club resort A Georgia Jewel

Since the late 1800s, people have been traveling to Jekyll Island, Georgia in order to enjoy the climate of southeast Georgia and to stay at what is now the historic Jekyll Island Club Resort (319 Riverview Drive, Jekyll Island; 912-319-4349). Admittedly, many of those initial visitors to Jekyll Island, back in the day, had access to big bank accounts and they were members of wealthy and influential families such as the Rockefellers, Morgans, Vanderbilts, and Pulitzers. It’s also fair to say that Jekyll Island was the original home of the rich and famous in the U.S. These days, Jekyll Island and the Jekyll Island Club Resort – located 65 miles south of Savannah– is a popular destination for couples, families and golfers throughout the year.

What makes Jekyll Island and the Jekyll Island Club Resort so appealing is that the architecture from the island’s historic past have been preserved for those to enjoy now and, hopefully, well into the future. If only those trees

dripping with Spanish moss could talk!

Guests at the Jekyll Island Club Resort – which includes accommodation options at the Jekyll Ocean Club, Island Cottages, or the historic Jekyll Island Club Hotel– get

to enjoy a number of amenities.

For instance, the croquet courts located near the entrance to the Jekyll Island Club Hotel are a popular outdoor recreation outlet as are the two pools on the premises.

At the Jekyll Ocean Club, guests have access to 10 miles of Atlantic Ocean beaches; a spacious outdoor pool deck; and an oversized hot tub with a fire pit. While here, enjoy the Eighty Ocean Kitchen and Bar, the resort’s beachfront kitchen and bar. And, every morning, you can enjoy a stunning sunrise from any of the 40 suites at this property. If you want to check

out the Jekyll Island Club Hotel for a meal, there’s a complimentary shuttle that will take you there and back.

As for the Island Cottages, there are three of them -- Sans Souci, Cherokee, and Crane Cottage. Each structure is located in the Landmark Historic District, as a part of the Jekyll Island Club. While staying at the Island Cottages, relax, read a book and explore the beautifully manicured gardens. The

Not surprisingly, the Jekyll Island Golf Club is Georgia’s largest public golf resort and one of the 20+ destinations on the Georgia Golf Trail.

“Jekyll Island is one of the best places in the U.S. where you can go to unwind and relax while enjoying golf, fresh seafood, long walks along the beach, poolside siestas, and time off the grid,” said Doug Hollandsworth, Founder, the Georgia Golf Trail.

Island Cottages are popular for couples, group retreats, or destination weddings. One of the most popular restaurants at the historic Jekyll Island Club Hotel is The Wharf, which provides fresh, delicious seafood while overlooking the surrounding marshlands.

When it comes to the ‘play’ part of your trip to Jekyll Island, there are guided kayak tours, bicycle rides, bird watching, tennis, paddle boarding, horseback riding, fishing, boating, and 63 holes of golf at the Jekyll Island Golf Club, which has three 18-hole golf courses and a nine-hole layout. The three 18-hole courses are Indian Mound, Oleander, and Pine Lakes. The nine-hole layout is Great Dunes.

Indian Mound, constructed in 1975 by veteran golf course designer Joe Lee, is the shortest of the three 18-hole courses. Water impacts play on 11 of the 18 holes.

Oleander has been the host course for the Georgia Open on four occasions. Designed by golf course architect Dick Wilson, Oleander is known as the most ‘distinct’ of the three 18hole golf courses on Jekyll Island.

Pine Lakes was first opened for play in 1968 and it was renovated in 2002. Pine Lakes, designed by Clyde Johnson, is the longest golf course on Jekyll Island. The golf course meanders through ocean forests and natural marsh hammocks.

Great Dunes, designed by the great Walter “Old Man’ Travis, was the first golf course on Jekyll Island. The course opened for play in 1928. Travis was asked to design and build the best golf course that money could buy. He did just that.

Only One Thing Missing!

In a recent trip North to celebrate my Jimtown High School - 50th Class Reunion in Elkhart, Indiana, there was only one thing missing about this trip… Jim Nabors (Gomer Pyle, USMC) singing “Back Home Again… in Indiana.” There isn’t anyone that sings that song better for the opening of the Indianapolis 500… than Jim Nabors, all starting in the same year… 1972.

You realize that you are going to exchange stories… maybe see old flames… even meet people that you didn’t really care about or like for that matter when you graduated… but then

you must face them 50 years later.

Then the first task came, when the gauntlet was placed on playing a round of golf for Saturday morning at one of their new local golf courses with the 4-letterman from my high school golf team. So, that wouldn’t be so bad, except it ended up being 54 degrees that morning at Bent Oak Golf Club, 2 of them showed up in shorts and it took me about 6 holes to warm up and get my jacket off. Lucky for me… the other letterman hadn’t really played that much golf and I was holding my own and moving ahead quit quickly.

The stories started flowing very quickly on the front nine and it was like the sarcasm had never stopped from high school. The only thing better about the sarcasm…. is that we all had some new material to use on each other. The day ended and we were still all friends… nothing could be better, and all agreed to do it again.

So… 50 years later, you have a little bit of apprehension about going to a party and seeing people that you haven’t even talked to in the past… well, in many cases 50 years. But in hindsight… you owe it to yourself and others, when that time comes up, you must go. Okay… I was fighting and kicking all the way into the room. Would I know anyone? Would they recognize me? Would I feel uncomfortable?

Dressed like I was… I went into the

room on fire, ready to take on the world. The first person I saw said… “what is your name? … okay… just kidding!” We were all friends and the stories started in very quickly. I was hugged by a lot of people that obviously knew me… and I had to back off just a little… focus my eyes on the name tag and respond with a second hug… Marilyn… it’s you! But… then there the stories

that would convict me if there wasn’t for a statute of limitations in place in Indiana on the theft of watermelons.

Let’s give me a chance to recover before having another “Class Reunion” Maybe that 60-year mark would be the next special one and the “Golf Letterman” would have a chance to practice, and I agree… we should play from the senior tees next time.

what's new Almost As Much Fun As The Real Thing!

Set up your own practice area or minicourse in your back yard with almostGOLF

Innovation has driven the suc cess of the golf industry and the game since the beginning of the sport. From hickory sticks and the “feathery” golf ball to metal woods, long putters, swing monitors and simulators, golf has undergone many improvements and enhancements in its 800 years.

Like so many aspects of the game, the practice ball has evolved as well. For those of a certain age, many new golfers were introduced to the game in the backyard with a plastic club and a wiffle ball. Today practice balls come in many shapes, sizes and feels: from multi-colored foam balls, to small, plastic hallow barrels, to soft, bean bag type balls for indoor practice.

The leader in this category since 2005, the almostGOLF Ball, is exactly what the name says – it’s the closest thing in looks, flight and feedback to a real golf ball at one-third the distance. With the boom in golf caused by the pandemic, almostGOLF has seen a surge in the growth of its business after 17 years.

“During the pandemic, people were looking for recreational activities to get outside and get exercise and have some fun,” said Teddy Durkin, President of almostGOLF. “We saw the change in the world and how we could distrib ute and sell to customers and pivoted

into a direct to consumer and online brand.”

almostGOLF is a restricted flight golf ball. Their patented CO2 tech nology in the manufacturing process creates internal pressure inside the ball’s cavity creating the bounce, spin and true flight of a regulation golf ball. Hit it straight, play a fade or shape a draw, almostGOLF gives you accurate feedback that makes practice realistic and will help improve your game.

With the holidays fast approaching, almostGOLF makes a great gift. The Ultimate Practice Pack includes an in flatable green, flagstick, 24 ball practice tube and a premium hitting mat with a rubber tee for $99.99. almostGOLF is perfect for working on those 30, 40, 50-yard short game shots and even the big stick if you have the space.

“I was fortunate to grow up in a house with a Dad who was an avid golfer and a good player.” said Durkin. “I tagged along and caddied a ton as a kid. I was the pro shop ‘rug rat.’ That passion led me to becoming a colle giate golfer and a former LPGA caddie, and eventually an entrepreneur and owner of almostGOLF.”

When you don’t have the time to go to your local course or a driving

range or you’re a new golfer who might be slightly intimidated to go to a driving range by yourself, Almost Golf is a great opportunity to practice in your backyard or school yard or neigh borhood park, get some swings, work on your game, and get some realistic feedback on the parts of your game that need work.

almostGOLF is a Chapter Partner with The First Tee. The First Tee’s mis sion is to impact the lives of young peo ple by providing educational programs that build character, instill life-enhanc ing values and promote healthy choices through the game of golf.

“almostGOLF is focused on growing the game through partnerships like The First Tee,” said Durkin. “Our prod ucts provide easy access to learning the game in a safe, affordable way that especially for new golfers builds confi dence and makes it really fun.”

The Canary Islands

TENERIFE

Tenerife is known to have some of the best golf courses in all the Canary Islands, nine of them servicing players all year-round. Golfers will find the perfect combination of good weather, beautiful landscapes, and championship golf, including the World Corporate Golf Challenge Finale coming soon on October 17-21. The World Corporate Golf Challenge represents one of the largest corporate golf tournaments in the world. Players and guests from over 30 countries will be able to enjoy the hospitality that the island of Tenerife has to offer.

The official WCGC World Final competition will be held at Golf Costa Adeje and the Sports Legends Cup will be played at Abama Golf, two superb courses that illustrate the excellent quality of golf in Tenerife and will undoubtedly contribute to the success of the event.

Golf Costa Adeje

As implied by the name, this golf club is situated in Adeje, a wonderful city with some excellent dining options. The very first 18 holes, now referred to as The Old Course, were first opened for play in 1998. Since then, an additional 9 holes have been added known as Los Lagos. Both courses feature generous fairways, but the focus is largely on precise approach play and the short game. The courses are in excellent shape for the majority of the year, which makes putting enjoyable. The difficulty is largely provided by elevation changes and sweeping undulations, as well as a few

gorges and lakes. Only on this course will you be accompanied by banana plantations overlooking the beautiful sea views and La Gomera Island in the distance. The Costa Adeje course has excellent conditions, and the greens are challenging. Remember that the island is frequently windy, so you may want to bring 1-2 extra clubs or fewer, depending on the wind’s direction. Unquestionably a highly suggested course to play, and reasonably priced. Number of holes: 27

Abama Golf

One of the best courses to have been created in Europe and is regarded by many as the best in the Canary Islands. It offers vistas over the island of La Gomera and out into the immense

blue of the Atlantic Ocean. Golfers of all skill levels will enjoy the challenge provided by the course’s 25,000 palm trees, no less than 22 lakes, dramatic elevation changes, and strategically placed bunkers that protect expansive putting areas. Following your round, treat yourself to a meal prepared by a Michelin-starred chef at the clubhouse while taking in the sunset. Number of holes: 18

Buenavista Golf

One of Tenerife’s most gorgeous golf courses, with holes built on cliff tops with views of the Atlantic Ocean and the majestic Teno mountain range. It is located in the northwestern region of the island. The total difficulty is increased by the

32 Golf Central • Volume 23, Issue 7

spacious fairways, stunning scenery, and numerous holes that tilt close to the cliff’s edge. Compared to other courses on the island, Buenavista may be a little off the usual route, but the trip to the north-west is tremendously enjoyable and well worth the effort. Number of holes: 18

More About Tenerife and its Golf Sector

Tenerife’s golf industry has progressively increased in status and repute. The Tenerife Open, a professional men’s European Golf Tour event, and the men’s and women’s Spanish Open are only two examples of the regular European championships and tournaments that are now contested here. These tournaments attract a lot of talent from Spain and internationally.

It’s no wonder that Tenerife is a favorite among golfers looking for sun because the Canary Islands, which are located in the south, have a remarkable annual climate of 23º, so you can visit the island at any time to enjoy the best conditions for enjoying your favorite sport. Now, major low-cost airlines are flying to this sun-kissed island, making the getaway much more appealing. Courses designed by leading figures in the sport – such as Donald Steel, John Jacobs and Severiano Ballesteros – can

be found within a few kilometers of each other, which are joined by El Tecina on the neighboring island of La Gomera. Strokes that appear to be aimed at the Atlantic Ocean, cliffs that surround the courses, excursions to nearby islands, and occasionally even the Mount Teide volcano appear as part of an outstanding natural backdrop. All these features combine to create

a special golfing experience unlike anything else available in Europe. You can select among golf courses with breathtaking sea views that are located on the coast and encircled by cliffs and coves, or mountain golf courses that are 700 meters above sea level, all while taking advantage of excellent accommodations that meet the highest levels of international standards.

All Access Golf Increases the Accessibility, Relatability, & Visibility For Minorities In The Sport Of Golf

United Way New York City’s program

Together We Thrive and its impact on All Access Golf, an organization dedicated to breaking barriers in golf.

It’s well known that golf can be leveraged for business, networking and opportunities while also giving participants self-knowledge and confidence. But people of color in urban areas often feel that the game is not meant for them and miss out on its benefits.

Created by CEO/Founder Pierre Kelley, All Access Golf’s mission is to increase visibility, relatability, and accessibility for minorities in the sport and use golf as a pathway to education, selfexploration and relationship-building.

Based in Brooklyn, the organization’s current initiatives include:

• More than young 100 golf students increasing representation in the sport and learning the connection between golf fundamentals and life lessons;

• Providing access to the game for adults with events, lessons, and teams;

• Golf cohort with the 100 Black Men organization, getting their kids ready to play golf with 20

CEO’s in the CEO Challenge; and

• The Golf Griot oral history project.

As founder and CEO of All Access Golf, Pierre Kelley received guidance

and support from Together We Thrive: Black Business Network, a broad coalition of government, nonprofit and corporate partners to support Blackowned businesses in New York City. In 2021 United Way NYC launched Together We Thrive in response to the disproportionate impact of Covid-19 on Black-owned businesses. The goal is to build their financial health, and to align, activate and increase the capacity of existing systems to meet the needs of Black entrepreneurs in NYC.

Tim Cantwell Wins South Florida PGA Professional Championship; Heather Angell Wins Women’s Section Championship

Tim Cantwell, PGA, of Jupiter birdied the first playoff hole to defeat Justin Hicks, PGA, and win the South Florida PGA Professional Championship at Imperial Golf Club.

Cantwell eagled the first hole on Imperial’s East course with a chipin from behind the green and rode that momentum to a 3-under 69 that got him into the playoff with Hicks at 9-under 207. Cantwell finished the job with a two-putt birdie from 15 feet on the par-5 10th hole after he hit the green with a 3-wood from 248 yards to win the South Florida PGA’s premier championship.

“I’ve had the privilege of winning more than 25 mini-tour events, but this victory ranks way up there,” said Cantwell, a PGA Instructor at PGA National Resort who also caddies at Seminole Golf Club.“Thanks to (former Seminole PGA Head Professional) Bob Ford and (PGA National’s PGA Director of Golf) Jane Broderick, because they encouraged me to get my A-1 PGA status. I got elected at the start of last year and for a 50-year-old this is a great step in my career.”

The victory earned Cantwell a spot in next year’s Puerto Rico Open on the PGA Tour. Tyler Collet (67-211), PGA Assistant Professional at John’s Island Club in Vero Beach, finished tied for ninth to clinch section Player of the Year honors, earning him a spot in next year’s Honda Classic.

Wellington resident Hicks, 47, birdied the 18th hole to force the playoff after a 70. Hicks, PGA Instructor at Don Law Academy, earned almost $3.8 million combined on the PGA Tour and Korn Ferry Tour before he stopped playing professionally. His career highlight was sharing the 18-hole lead at the 2008 U.S. Open at Torrey Pines that Tiger Woods eventually won in a 19-hole playoff.

Finishing a shot out of the playoff were Justin Bertsch (69-208), PGA Head Professional Club Pelican Bay, and second-round leader Jeremy Wells (72-208), PGA Director of Instruction at Cypress Lake Golf Club. Bertsch won the championship in 2019.

The top 11 finishers advanced to next year’s PGA Professional Championship presented by Cadillac.

In addition to Cantwell, Hicks, Bertsch and Wells, also qualifying were: fifthplace finishers Jon Balyeat (69-209) PGA at Quail Creek Country Club PGA Director of Golf; Justin McCarrahar (72-209) PGA at Heritage Ridge Golf & Country Club; seventh-place finishers Gene Fieger (70-210), Club Pelican Bay PGA Director of Golf, and Paul Scaletta (71-210), the Bear’s Club PGA Assistant Professional; and ninth-place finishers Christopher Finke (70-211), Dye Preserve Golf Club PGA Assistant Professional; Mike Berger (72-211) PGA at Hammock Creek Golf Club and Matt Cahill (71-211), Seminole Golf Club PGA Head Professional. Greenacres resident Alan Morin (70-211), The Club at Ibis PGA Assistant Professional, lost a fourway playoff for the final qualifying spot and is the first alternate. Morin has been named Player of the Year in the Section a record 11 times.

Collet and Ron Philo (72-219), PGA Professional Aurora Anguilla Resort & Golf Club, already were qualified for the PGA Professional Championship.

Heather Angell, the PGA Director of Instruction at Heritage Palms Golf and Country Club, won the PGA Women’s Section Championship on Wednesday with a pair of 72s on the West Course. It was the first time the Women’s Section Championship was combined with the South Florida PGA Professional Championship. Angell shot 74 Thursday and finished 38th overall.

The South Florida PGA Professional Championship, run by the South Florida PGA, is Presented by Club Car, Cadillac and Rolex. Supporting partners are Titleist/FootJoy, Callaway Golf, Nike, TaylorMade, Stache Cups, Whistling Straits, PGA Tour and Winner’s Award Group.

It is no different under extreme circumstances like a category 4 hurricane named Ian; in fact, it is even more important to check those boxes in times of strife.

With Longboat Key, my home and place of work in the cross hairs of Ian’s path until the final hours we prepared for the full brunt of the storm: We moved millions of dollars in equipment miles to higher ground. We removed irrigation satellites and components,

all possible projectiles, and shut down power and water. We then helped secure the hotel, the beach, and other areas of the resort. The tasks were arduous and at the same time seemed futile if this thing really hit.

As one of the final people to leave

outside world very quickly and what took some 24 hours seemed like days.

Being one of the first to cross the Ringling Bridge back to the Key all was bathed in sunlight and a cool breeze.

We considered ourselves fortunate as our home was basically intact. The golf courses were another story; they were a wrinkled mess of electrical wires and tree debris so thick you could not see the Paspalum grass underneath. Seamlessly superintendent mode kicked in. Plans and phone calls were made.

the island I felt a calm and quiet sense we did all we could for a zone A evacuation site. In the final hours the storm moved south but still proved massive and relentless with sustained winds and rain. Even being 30 miles east for the event we lost water, electricity, and much of our contact with the

Friday morning after a Wednesday storm the work begins without power, water and many other resources. Folks leave their families at home and work dark ‘til dark on the clean up like “yeah we know the drill.” Power is restored; water thereafter. Four days later with the help of industry partners and a nothing short of a herculean effort by our maintenance team one course is open for play, We call ourselves “The Cru” as in Motley but we get-r-done. Let me tell you.

Clean up is ongoing at the Resort as are our thoughts and prayers for those that experienced the storm surge as well from Ian. We are all Florida Strong.

Kayla Kipp Becomes GCSAA’s First Female Certified Turf Equipment Manager

Nemacolin, Pennsylvania’s premier luxury resort destination, is proud to announce Kayla Kipp, the equipment manager in the Turfgrass Management Department for the acclaimed resort’s Mystic Rock and Shepherd’s Rock golf courses, recently achieved her certification as a Certified Turf Equipment Manager through the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA). She is one of 15 in the world to hold this certification in the industry and is, notably, the first woman to do so.

Over the last seven years, Kipp has volunteered her time with the GCSAA on the Equipment Managers Task Group and was instrumental in helping to develop the intense certification program bestowed upon turf equipment management professionals who have demonstrated a high degree of knowledge and proficiency in their profession.

“To earn her certification, Kayla was required to have three years

of experience as an equipment manager and to have completed the Equipment Management Certificate Program (EMCP) Level 1 and 2 to begin the Certified Turf Equipment Manager program (CTEM),” GCSAA CEO Rhett Evans said. “To then earn her certification, she passed all 197 attesting criteria focused on best practices of maintenance facility operations, safety, and the environment. She is the first woman to become a CTEM, and we congratulate her on this historical achievement.”

Of Kipp’s accomplishment, Nemacolin President Maggie Hardy Knox says, “This is monumental, and we are proud to have her motivation, determination, and spirit on the associate team at Nemacolin. She’s a shining example to all that nothing is impossible, and she is an encouragement to other women who are determined to achieve success in any business or industry.”

52 Golf Central • Volume 23, Issue 7

Prior to joining the Nemacolin staff, Kipp served as the equipment manager at the Lodestone and Fantasy Valley golf courses at Wisp Resort in McHenry, Maryland, and spent six years in the United States Air Force as a material handling and equipment maintenance journeyman.

Chris Anderson serves as the director of turfgrass at Nemacolin and as Kipp’s supervisor. “Since Kayla joined our team, she has devoted her time and talent to bring new life to our maintenance facility and program. She has fasttracked her way to CTEM and brought our playing surfaces to the next level by working with the team,” adds Anderson. Kipp says of her accomplishment, “GCSAA CEO Rhett Evans is always the first to remind us to ‘lead out,’ be the first to cut tracks for the next individual, and to put the work in to benefit the future. As I am now the first woman to attain the title of CTEM, and as I’ve

participated in three Women in Turf events while serving on the inaugural Women’s Task Group, I feel as though I have absolutely cleared a path for others to succeed in this industry. I’m ready for what’s next.”

‘Thank a Golf Course Superintendent Day,’ According to Landscapes Golf Management

A foundation to every business is perfecting the product. If it looks and performs in ways which provide enjoyment, function and overall value, the Vegas odds of meaningful profitability are favorable.

Golf courses are no exception. We sometimes hear players denounce playing conditions and therefore visit layouts down the street. Yet the competition is stiff among those courses which live up to gold-star standards. Notwithstanding and impressively, we most often hear about stiff competition for the Almighty.

That brings us to September 13 and “Thank a Golf Course Superintendent Day.” Promoted by GCSAA in conjunction with other superintendent groups globally, they collectively represent more than 31,000 golf course professionals across 78 countries. Indeed, let’s celebrate these often-overlooked heroes who awake in the wee morning hours to passionately present tracks golfers love.

Golf Course Industry took to a cadre of golf course superintendents from Landscapes Golf Management – operator of more than 50 golf courses, country clubs and resorts – to gather their insights as #ThankASuper day nears. Here’s Part 1 – a “front nine” – with the “back nine” to follow in a subsequent installment:

David Smith, Max Mandel Golf Course (TX)

• What it means to be a golf course superintendent – It’s my life on and off the course, and every day is a new challenge.

• What golf means to me – Being a scratch golfer all my life has opened a lot of doors and gave me the opportunity to meet great people along the way.

Jared Dillinger, Three Crowns Golf Club (WY)

• What it means to be a golf course superintendent –Far more than taking care of a golf course, we provide our community with a unique space to get outdoors, escape the hustle and bustle of our daily lives, and enjoy themselves in a way unlike any other. It also means being a steward to the environment to continue providing such a space for generations to come.

• What golf means to me – Participating in a sport and hobby that’s rich in history, where you can connect to the past as well as the present with your playing partners. Golf is the only sport where amateurs and pros alike enjoy themselves on the course and experience the same conditions and play with the same set of rules. Golf connects people of all walks of life and cultures worldwide.

Matthew Whalen, The Broadlands Golf Course (CO)

• What it means to be a golf course superintendent – It isn’t by accident that Superintendent begins with “super.” It can be challenging, and you learn to enjoy the days when everything goes your way. However, better lessons are learned from the days it doesn’t. Working

with Mother Nature and remaining patient and humble is truly a science and an art learned through successes and failures. Working with staff is the most enjoyable part of every day and building the best team is the most rewarding.

• What golf means to me – Anyone can enjoy golf, be they a low or high handicapper, and the game is best played with strangers and talking throughout the round. Golf brings people together for the true love of the outdoors and beautiful scenery we are blessed to enjoy each day. I think most people would say even a bad day of golf is still better than a day in the office!!

Scott Dillinger, Greeley Country Club (CO)

• What it means to be a golf course superintendent –It’s the culmination of my professional dream. I started as a rough mower 37 years ago and looked in awe at the Superintendent. I can’t wait to get up every morning to go to work and start on my to-do list.

• What golf means to me – The greatest yet most frustrating game ever conceived. To borrow a quote from Paige Spiranac: “It’s my therapy and the reason I need therapy!”

Doug Hausman, Dakota Dunes Country Club (SD)

• What it means to be a golf course superintendent – It’s a lifestyle and a passion that I look forward to participating in every day. If not on these hallowed grounds, I am always thinking about the property while away.

• What golf means to me – What I like about golf is it teaches “life lessons.” It’s self- regulatory whether alone or with a group, done the proper way with respect to yourself, the property and your fellow player.

Katz Courtesy of Golf Course Industry

Brice Griebler, The Golf Club at Devils Tower (WY)

• What it means to be a golf course superintendent – I am not sure there are enough words in the English language to encapsulate exactly what being a superintendent means, but it means so much more than growing great turf. It means being a leader, it means being innovative, it means being flexible and it means being a teammate!

• What golf means to me – In its simplest sense, golf means togetherness. It means fun in the outdoors with your friends, spouse and children and even with complete strangers. It means fun whether you’re a single digit handicap or just beginning!

Joel Holling, Jackrabbit Golf Course (NE)

• What it means to be a golf course superintendent – I take great pride in being a golf course superintendent and have been committed to Jackrabbit Run for 33 years in making it the best it can be.

• What golf means to me – Golf has been everything to me from learning the game from my father and spending time with him playing the game. I then became a member of a high school and college teams where I earned a degree in horticulture. Teaching my kids the game and watching them become successful at it means enjoyable time spent together.

Jeff Schultz, Shoreline Golf Course (IA)

• What it means to be a golf course superintendent – It’s a blessing. Every day I get to go to work and do what I love, and I am surrounded by a lot of great people. It does not get any better than that. It’s instant gratification to know I have a part in making this golf course the best it can be.

• What golf means to me – Golf is therapy to me. I’m on the course getting rid of some stress by digging a hole, fixing a sprinkler head or playing nine holes. It’s like a fruit or vegetable … it’s healthy and good for you.

Mark Hassell, Kings Deer Golf Club (CO)

• What it means to be a golf course superintendent – You are a person that’s slightly a perfectionist who wears many hats and better have some thick skin. You are also a steward for the environment and able to organize a variety of different personalities on your crew to achieve a common goal.

• What golf means to me – Golf is a sport with a huge, long history that can be enjoyed by anyone, regardless of ability, who wants to take part. It’s allowed me the opportunity to apply my skills and create a playing field equal for anyone who wants to enjoy the game.

Mississippi State University Releases Celebration Hybrid™

Mississippi State University’s Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station officially released Celebration Hybrid™ Bermudagrass (experimental name MSB 1017) at the 2022 Turfgrass Research Field Day on Sept. 22, 2022, held in Starkville, MS.

The new cultivar is the first release out of the “Celebration X” breeding program, which stemmed from the idea of cross-pollinating industry standard Celebration® Bermudagrass with numerous attractive bermudagrass genotypes collected and maintained over the years at MSU to create new lines (grasses). The goal of the program was to take the top characteristics of Celebration and develop new grasses with better cold tolerance, a finer texture, fewer seed heads and less thatch. These grasses will be used in home lawns, golf courses, parks and sports fields across the country and around the world. The Celebration X breeding program was initiated in 2014 as a partnership between MSU and Sod Solutions, a turfgrass research, development and marketing company.

“I first evaluated Celebration Bermudagrass while visiting Australia in the late 90s,” said Sod Solutions President Tobey Wagner. “Since then, Celebration has proven itself time and time again as a beautiful, aggressive and drought-resistant grass. We are excited to release the next progenies of Celebration, with Celebration Hybrid being the first official release from the Celebration X Program. Over the past eight years, the team

at Mississippi State has done an outstanding job on the research and development of these new cultivars.

Congratulations to former MSU breeder Wayne Philley and everyone involved in the release of this new grass.”

Celebration’s ability to block well, resist drought and endure shade better than other bermudas has made it one of the best options on the market over the past two decades.

Philley spearheaded the research and evaluation of this project and thinks Celebration Hybrid is an appropriate name for MSB-1017. “It may also be looked upon as Celebration ‘refined’. I hope turf managers and sod producers who love Celebration will also love Celebration Hybrid. The improvements of finer leaf texture and fewer seedheads may allow it to be even more attractive than Celebration in certain applications,” he shared.

Five grasses from the Celebration X program were chosen to be entered into the National Turfgrass Evaluation Program’s 2019 National Bermudagrass Test. This is a five-year trial being conducted at universities across the U.S. Experimental varieties are evaluated along with commercial varieties. Progress reports for 2020 and 2021 have ranked MSB-1017 at or near the top for fine leaf texture each year when averaged across all sites that reported this trait. Likewise, these progress reports revealed that MSB-1017 is shown to produce very few seedheads compared to all other varieties when averaged across sites in both years.

“It is my hope that we captured improved traits in Celebration Hybrid without losing any of the good traits of Celebration,” Philley said. “Many attractive but diverse genotypes resulted from this breeding project. Much effort has gone into evaluating them. I am confident that Celebration Hybrid is one of the best of the entire group and I hope that it can be utilized by the turf industry throughout its zone of adaptation.”

Celebration Hybrid has been planted in several real-world test applications throughout the Southeast, including three golf courses in Florida: Country Club of Florida in Boyton Beach, Royal Poinciana Golf Club in Naples and On Top of the World GC in Ocala. Several sod farms have been trialing the grass ahead of its release. Star Farms in Sebring, FL planted Celebration Hybrid plugs in 10,000 Sq. Ft. plots in June 2021 before expanding by 3 acres in June 2022. Quality Turf in Avon Park, FL planted sprigs of Celebration Hybrid as a foundation block in May 2022 on a 3/4 acre.

Superior Turf and Pike Creek Turf Farms, both located in Georgia; Billy Mayfield Farms and Murff Turf Farms in Texas and Inman Sod in North Carolina also have trial plots of Celebration Hybrid.

Celebration Hybrid is the initial release from the Celebration X Program with more to be released next year. Celebration Hybrid will have limited commercial availability by late Summer 2024.

Turf Pirate's Journal $Losing the Anchor$

Greetings and salutations Turf Pirates!

I hope that all is well and that you are enjoying the fruits of your labor in all parts of the kingdom. Today’s conversation may be not quite as familiar to everyone depending on your boating experiences and the fact that sometimes terms that are similar are often mistaken one for another.

In Turf Pirate lore we have borrowed a nautical term known as “Loosing the Anchor”. Often this term is confused with “Lowering the Anchor”. Lowering or dropping the anchor is the simple act of temporarily deploying the anchor to secure or slow the ship for a given measure of time. Loosing the anchor is quite different as this only happens when the anchor becomes disabled preventing the ship from moving and all manner of recovery efforts cannot release the anchor. The word Loosing

is a verb that means to set free. The ship is literally stuck and cannot move forward or back, the anchor is loosed to set the ship free. Have you ever been stuck in your professional or personal life? It happens to all of us. A true Turf Pirate knows that when you find yourself stuck in life or career you have to figuratively loose the anchor to move forward and live your best life, to set yourself free from whatever is holding you back. This can happen in a number of circumstances. You may find yourself in a toxic job or relationship for example. You often feel as if you must stay in this situation because you are afraid of the short term loss or the unknown future. Fear is a heavy anchor and can even sink your ship if not addressed. There is a deep instinct that awakens when it’s time to loose the anchor, masters and captains trust this instinct completely

and it opens many paths to the faithful. Successful people know that it’s better to lose the anchor than to lose the ship. You cannot change what you are willing to tolerate so first you must mentally loose the anchor and take the necessary actions to get back on course.

Turf Pirates are adventurers at heart and when we sail hard toward the horizon living a full and colorful life we feel inspired. We do occasionally find a peaceful place and drop anchor for a time to rest, reflect and recover. This is natural. Vintage Turf Pirates may even hold anchor content to be the master of that sought after harbor. However, most Turf Pirates ring the ships bell and set sail anew quite often much to the chagrin of outsiders. When you have reason to believe that your situation is such that it’s harmful and circumstances and even people close to you begin to bring serious resistance, literally anchoring your progress it’s time for action. It’s time to loose the anchor, cut the line. Once cut though you are initially adrift so mind well the captain’s wheel and adjust your rudder. The last few years have brought unprecedented pressure complicating the art of living and striking at the heart of our quality of life. Turf Pirates is it time to loose the anchor? Are you living where you want to live, doing what you want to do with the people you want to be near? If not what are the anchors that hold you in this lesser world? Take heart Turf Pirates the turf industry is a vast green ocean with many ports of call, you need not be shackled unjustly. Loose the anchor and see what treasures lie just beyond your current reach.
