Nemacolin Delights

All the Senses in Pennsylvania’s Laurel Highlands

Nemacolin, in the picturesque Laurel Highlands (about one hour southeast of Pittsburgh), is a resort destination that exceeds just about every expectation you can set. Even if you’re welltraveled. Even if you’re a golf snob. Even if you’re a food and wine

aficionado, an art lover, adventure junkie, buddies’ trip captain, or family vacation czar.

Just down the road from architect Frank Lloyd Wright’s acclaimed masterpiece Fallingwater and Fort Necessity National Battlefield (site of the opening action of the French and

Indian War in 1754), Nemacolin is making its own distinctive brand of history in Pennsylvania’s nature-rich Laurel Highlands.

Nemacolin’s satisfying array of amenities and attractions include an internationally acclaimed art collection, The Hardy Room, The Tea Room, Forbes Five-Star dining, a superb and satisfying steakhouse, Italian (at the familystyle Barattolo) and luxe seafood (the chic Aqueous) restaurants, luxury shopping boutiques, a cozy tavern, and even a 1950s-style ice cream parlor. Beyond golf, outdoor adventurers can enjoy The Nemacolin Field Club; Wildlife Adventures that feature everything from safari tours to dog sledding; The Peak (complete with expansive pool areas, zip lines, and a climbing wall, combat paintball, and cosmic bowling); and Jeep off-roading, fly fishing, as well as antique auto and aircraft collections.

Nemacolin offers guests 270 luxuriously appointed guest rooms, suites, townhomes, and private

upscale homes, including Falling Rock, a AAA Five-Diamond boutique hotel with rooms overlooking the Mystic Rock golf course.  Teeing it up at Nemacolin’s Mystic Rock course means tackling the crafty Pete Dye and walking in the footsteps of PGA Tour players who competed in the 84 Lumber Classic from 2003 to 2006.

Mystic Rock is a sterling example of a more subtle and cerebral side of Dye. He lets the rolling land dictate the routing and shot values here with ample landing areas, walkability, and serene sight lines. Positioning off the tee and hitting to the correct parts of the green comes into play routinely as Dye

will enjoy all-new, luxury in-room services, along with butlers to cater to their every need. The dining options will be bigger, better, and more delicious than ever before with new bespoke dining and bar options.

Every visit to Nemacolin is an opportunity to enjoy a bucket list day. Enjoy epic golf, then the pools, zip-lining, or cosmic bowling at The Peak. Continue your day with spa treatments, Safari tours, or fly fishing, and close it out with an extraordinary meal at one of our six acclaimed restaurants. The resort’s entertainment and adventure offerings are endlessly creative and always inviting. Discover more at Nemacolin.com

plays with angles, misdirection, false fronts, and greens that run off the sides or back if you mis-club.

At Shepherd’s Rock, the mischievous side of Pete Dye and his associate Tim Liddy come out to play. You’ll find yourself playing shots 40 feet from the hole to allow Dye’s slopes to (hopefully) do their work, and you’ll come to respect false fronts that can send even well-struck shots that look pin high back down the front edge of the green and toward the man who hit it. Have fun figuring out Shepherd’s wildly sloping greens and the ideal angles into them.

The Grand Lodge is coming to Nemacolin in August 2023, and it will elevate a worldwide measure of luxury. The Grand Lodge will offer spacious suites where guests

Where were you born? Did you grow up there?

I was born in Brasil in a small town in the country side, I moved to South Florida when I was 5 and grew up there until I moved to Orlando to attend UCF.

What do you do for a living?

Currently I’m a Carpenter for a historic restoration company and I also Caddy and do promotional modeling!

What would you like to do for a living?

I would like to transition into

Bianca Reis

What three things would you need to survive on a deserted island? A knife, a magnifying glass and a blanket, I need to be cozy at all times.

Who would you like to have with you on the same deserted island; and why?

My best friend Reyna, I can talk to her forever and never be bored.

What do you find to be the most annoying habit people demonstrate on the golf course?

Pessimism and taking it way to seriously! Golf is a sport and like all sports you do it because it’s fun, so when someone’s too focused on complaining about everything they did wrong instead of taking the wins it starts to take the fun out of it!

Name the three most important things to you in this world. My dog, my Family, and food!

What do you fear the most? Becoming complacent

What three people would you most like to play with in your fantasy golf foursome?

Bill Murrey, Kiera Knightly, Will Smith!

What are some of your great accomplishments?

I would say as trivial as it is, being a female carpenter with it being such a male dominated profession.

Marketing where I can express my creativity.

Whom do you most admire for their inner and outer beauty?

Definitely my mother, she’s beautiful outside but she is also one of the most caring people I know.

Tell us something about yourself that only your closest friends know. My weirdest skill is that I’m innately very good at any kind of board game or those games you play on your phone's text app. I have no idea why but most of them just come very naturally.

Favorite television show? Star Trek the next generation, I couldn’t even tell you how many times I’ve watched the entire season through.

Last book you read?

I’m currently reading the idiot by Elif Batuman.

Favorite charity to support?

Project Genesis in Guatemala and JDRF.

Scenic,Well-Conditioned Define Remington, Kissimmee Bay

Thirty minutes south and slightly east of Disney World and metro Orlando sit two sister golf course properties that are long standing favorites of Central Florida golfers. Kissimmee Bay Country Club and Remington Golf

Club, in partnership with Down to Earth course maintenance and management services, continues to keep the reputation of these two courses top-notch, providing some of the most consistent, premier conditions and reliable golfing experiences in Orlando.

Kissimmee Bay Country Club is one of the most scenic in the Sunshine State, with the routing carved out of Florida’s natural beauty. Surrounding its signature tight fairways are massive oak trees that date back a hundred years — a rarity in this region — along with stands of stunning cypress trees, which were also preserved when the course was built.

Blending in some classic palm trees to anchor and frame the view and the result is a breathtaking and memorable shot-making golf course that earned Golf Digest’s nomination for “Best New Courses.”

Opened in 1990, the championship layout designed by Clifton, Ezell & Clifton features water on 16 holes, gently rolling fairways, multi-tiered tees, large greens and an abundance of wildlife and birds

20 Golf Central • Volume 24, Issue 1 florida golf central

including a local flock of Sandhill Cranes. Another unique feature of the club is a permanent display of golf equipment and memorabilia in the Langley Golf Museum, a private collection of more than 1000 rare and antique golf items.

Just around the corner is Remington Golf Club. Remington which opened in 1996, is another strikingly beautiful Clifton, Ezell & Clifton design and was recognized by Golf Digest as “Best New Course.” While Kissimmee Bay is tighter with more water hazards, Remington is wider with more generous landing areas offering a fair but challenging golf experience.

Remington Golf Club is a public course with affordable pricing year-round. Kissimmee Bay is a semi-private club and recently was named by Golf Digest as one of the best places to play in Orlando under $100. Membership at Kissimmee Bay includes membership at Remington as well. Unlimited golf and carts are included for the year at both facilities. Both courses offer customer loyalty programs and redemption rewards to encourage frequent play.

Kissimmee Bay and Remington

have excellent event facilities for hosting charity galas, corporate events, golf outings, weddings and parties of endless varieties. Guests will enjoy the A-list standard of service and experienced staff at both courses. Bring your ideas for a custom menu and watch the clubs’ creative chefs bring their culinary magic to make your event special and memorable.

Summertime Spark Golf leagues are now underway at both clubs. For more information or to book a tee time, visit www.golfkissimmebay.com or www.golfremington.com

LPGA Rookie Kiira Riihijärvi Joins Mission Inn Resort and Club as Player Ambassador

Mission Inn Resort & Club, located in Central Florida and home to championship golf courses El Campeón and Las Colinas, has introduced LPGA Tour rookie Kiira Riihijärvi as a player ambassador.

In her new role, Riihijärvi will represent the resort and brand as she navigates her first full season at the highest level of women’s professional golf.

Mission Inn Resort and Club, an MMI Hotel Group property, will host the Epson Tour’s Inova Championship, May 26-28, 2023 for the fourth consecutive year – a prime example of its commitment to women’s golf.

“We’ve had the privilege of

following Kiira’s rise to the LPGA Tour as a past participant in our event,” said Cindy Staley, General Manager. “We value our partnerships with others who share a vision to grow the game and believe Kiira will represent that sentiment as she continues her LPGA debut season.”

Riihijärvi will feature the Mission Inn Resort and Club logo on the front of her golf bag and says she has very fond memories of her time well spent at the resort to play and practice.

“Everything about the place is top quality - from their team to the courses, to the practice facilities, said Riihijärvi. “I’ll proudly be wearing the resort’s

logo on my bag for the 2023 season and I look forward to returning for a visit soon.”

A rising star in women’s golf, Riihijärvi, was first exposed to golf at the age of nine after participating in a children’s beginners’ course at the Virpiniemi Golf Club in Oulu, Finland – her native country.

Early last December, Mission Inn Resort & Club was sold to MMI Hotel Group, a family operation which is based in Flowood, Mississippi. The Florida resort is only a la 35-minute drive northwest of Orlando.

golf courses are wonderfully complementary. The El Campeón (The Champion) layout, built in 1917 by George O’Neil, is one of the oldest courses in the South with a classic design featuring unusually sharp elevation changes in the typically flat central Florida terrain. It has played hosted to multiple high school, college and state professional tournaments.

In contrast, Las Colinas (The Hills) was created in 1992 by former PGA Tour winner Gary Koch and it lives up to its name with wide fairways rolling over gentle rises. Both courses at Mission Inn feature undulating greens which are surrounded by tropical vegetation and incorporate large water hazards on many holes.

Mission Inn Resort & Club has distinct Spanish Colonial architecture and offers 176 hotel guest rooms, 131 deluxe rooms, 38 club suites, four onebedroom suites, two two-bedroom suites and one penthouse suite with three bedrooms.

In addition to the two championship golf courses, the resort also features four restaurants, two lounges and a poolside bar. Its recreational amenities include tennis, pickleball, jogging and bicycling trails, volleyball courts, an

outdoor pool, a spa, fitness center and a marina offering pontoons, bass boat and kayaks for ecotouring. More than 30,000 square feet of well-appointed indoor and outdoor event space is available for meetings, banquets, holiday parties, weddings and special occasions.

“Our partnership with Kiira comes amid a flurry of exciting enhancements across our resort,” added Staley. “She’s an incredibly talented player, has called Central Florida home for years and shares our core values and love of the region.”

Riihijärvi would make history in 2021 as the first Finnish female golfer to ever play in the legendary Augusta National Women’s Amateur. During her collegiate career at the University of Tampa, Riihijärvi served as the team captain and accomplished 13 individual wins. She was a five-time All-American, two-time NCAA D2 Player of the Year, and two-time Sunshine State Conference Player of the Year.

Later that year, Riihijärvi turned pro at the Gant Ladies Open in Finland, would then play a full season on the Epson Tour where she earned six top ten finishes in 2022 including first professional victory at Ann Arbor’s Road to the LPGA. She finished 4th in last year’s Epson Tour

rankings to earn her LPGA Tour card.

The Epson Tour is the official qualifying tour of the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) and its mission is to prepare the world’s best female professional golfers for a successful career on the LPGA Tour. Mission Inn is more than happy to play a supporting role.

“We’re a golf resort, and golf is critical to our success and always will be,” said Dominick Buompastore, Vice President of Operations at MMI Hotel Group. “These (Epson Tour players) are the future of professional golf.”

Ruffels Makes Her Mark on Women's Sports Through Tennis and the EPSON Tour

Gabriela Ruffels has had quite an athletic career. The Australian is currently a member of the Epson Tour, the official qualifying tour of the LPGA, but before pursuing life as a professional golfer, Ruffels had a decorated Tennis career. She picked up the racket at the age of 6 and continued playing until she was 14 years old, winning 21 International Tennis Federation doubles events in Europe. At the age of 12, just two years before leaving the game, she was the number one-ranked Australian junior.

The University of Southern California alumna made the switch from tennis to golf in 2015 and saw the NCAA semifinals in 2018 and quarterfinals in 2019 with the Trojans. Ruffels had a successful year in 2019, being a

member of the victorious Palmer Cup International team and becoming the first Australian to win the U.S. Women’s Amateur. The following year, 2020, was no different with Ruffels almost defending her U.S. Women’s Amateur title, finishing second.

Now 22 years old, Ruffels is making her mark on the professional golf world. She turned professional in December of 2021

and was an Epson Tour rookie in 2022. Ruffels saw her name just outside of the Epson Tour top 10 for most of the year and leaned on five top-10 finishes to stay in the hunt for a 2023 LPGA Tour card. Unfortunately, Ruffels finished No. 15 in the Race for the Card, just five spots away from earning automatic LPGA Tour membership – which is awarded to the top 10 players at the end of each Epson Tour season.

Although she missed out during her rookie year, Ruffels returned to the Epson Tour in 2023 ready to continue learning and prove herself worthy of a spot on the big stage. In just two events, Ruffels accomplished just that by winning the Carlisle Arizona Women’s Golf Classic. The tournament is tied for the biggest purse on the Epson Tour schedule this year, providing the Australian with a $50,250 winner’s check – her first on the Epson Tour. Thanks to the win and an additional top-10 finish, Ruffels sits at No. 1 on the Official Money List after three events. While there are still 19 events left on the schedule, Ruffels is a player to watch as she races toward a 2024 LPGA Tour card.

Today’s Private Golf Membership Buyer You Might Be Surprised What’s Motivating Them

Whether you are a member of a private club or a buyer in search of Utopia, it’s likely you find value in data and market insight. In this article, I will address some key trends occurring in the private club marketplace that both pre and existing members should take note of.

The days of golfers walking into a private club with a checkbook to buy a membership because of the “golf course” are fading quickly. There are a number of other determining factors that are steering the decision process, including: waitlist scenario, tee time availability, real estate inventory, the financial health of the club, initiation vs. ROI on investment, social programming, amenities, healthy living, etc., etc., etc.

Below are the most significant motivating factors we are seeing

at Golf Life Navigators (an online environment that helps people find their ideal club and community). Each is playing a role in the decision process for buyers in 2023:

• Finding a club with a “friendly culture” was ranked higher in importance compared to the club’s “golf amenities” according to 8,000 prospective members surveyed, with an average handicap of 12. These are core golfers that appreciate a good track but looking for more.

• Consider this trend regarding waitlists. 70% of private club buyers said they are “not at all likely” to “not likely” to join a waitlist that is 12 months or longer. They are even willing to alter their search and seek alternative

clubs with instant membership availability. Even go as far as searching in a new market.

• With regards to the club’s amenities, 50% of private golf buyers will base their decision on the quality of the club’s health amenities. The dining operation is also high on the desire list with 55% of buyers basing their decision on the cuisine options, club house culture, amenities, etc. As an example, 43% of prospects are seeking a dining option for “breakfast” and 54% are seeking a “sports bar” setting.

• Time for the biggie. Real estate. 75-85% of buyers to the Southeastern U.S. are planning to combine their search of a club with a golf home. In most cases, the home

36 Golf Central • Volume 24, Issue 1 private times
By: Jason Becker, CEO of Golf Life Navigators The Moorings Golf & Country Club – Naples, FL

search is dominating the club search. With lower inventory of golf homes, this makes the process for buyers that much more challenging. Buyers are often seen with cash in hand, willing to pay a premium, but cannot find that home that checks all the boxes.

Of these specific trends we are seeing in the marketplace, I believe the most significant trend is indeed the real estate scenario. Prospective members are looking for golf homes. On average, 69% of golf buyers would like to “live inside the gates” or “on campus” at their future golf community. They want a golf cart to drive up to the clubhouse; they want to feel safe and secure; and most of all, they want to live in a controlled environment should another pandemic rear its ugly head.

The problem is inventory levels - and waitlists. So, what is the solution for the next generation of private golf buyers? Our partner Golf Certified Real Estate Agents would tell buyers that unfortunately concessions will have to be made. The days of getting 100% of what you want are likely over in most markets. Concessions on the club’s amenities, home features and overall community may be tough to swallow, but you’ll have to. In addition, if buyers have a plan to

“wait out initiation fee increases,” good luck. Initiation fees are not going to decrease. You will be just positioning yourself further down on the waitlist by hoping for a pricing shift. We still have a strong 6-10 years of Baby Boomers retiring – most looking South.

In conclusion, the private golf buyer has changed tremendously the last decade. They don’t want to settle, but in many cases, they might have to. For clubs, this is a great era for private golf demand but don’t become complacent. Market your brand based upon data trends and invest into amenities. Otherwise, peer clubs will be pulling away from the pack by 2024.

Georgia State Parks: A Great Getaway for Golfers & Their Families

While the presentation of the famous Green Jacket marks the end of the Masters golf tournament each spring, for many golfers around the world, that historic annual ceremony represents beginning of the annual golf season – especially for those golfers living north of the equator.

With the unofficial beginning of the golf season so strongly connected with the Masters, it’s only appropriate to highlight a few of the fabulous public-access golf courses in Georgia, especially those

located in Georgia’s state parks. While there are more than 60 state parks in Georgia, nine of them have golf courses, all of which are part of The Georgia Golf Trail.

“While golfers love playing the state park golf courses, families enjoy the amenities of our state parks even more,” said Doug Hollandsworth, Founder, The Georgia Golf Trail.

Here’s a sneak peek at six of those state park golf courses in Georgia, where there’s a great deal to do in addition to playing golf.

The Lakes Golf Course at Laura S. Walker State Park in Waycross

At The Lakes Golf Course, each

fairway and landing area is defined with gentle, links-style mounds that accent the course’s three large lakes. Its South Georgia location generates mild weather throughout the year, especially in the winter. In 2011, “Hook A Kid On Golf” named The Lakes as the Best New Site of the Year in the U.S. and The Lakes was voted the Best Municipal Golf Course in Georgia by Golf Digest in 2009.

At the park, visitors are close to the northern edge of the mysterious Okefenokee Swamp. Walking along the lake’s edge and nature trail, visitors may spot a shy gopher tortoise, alligators, saw palmettos, yellow shafted

flickers, warblers, owls and great blue herons. The park’s lake offers opportunities for fishing, swimming and boating. Kayaks and bicycles are available for rent.

Wallace Adams Golf Course at Little Ocmulgee State Park & Lodge in McRae

Simply put, one round at the Wallace Adams Golf Course is all it will take for you to realize why this golf course is a favorite destination for golfers in the Southeast. It’s nicknamed ‘Little Augusta’ for a great reason.

At the park, families love to camp, fish, boat, swim, and walk along the 2.6 mile Oak Ridge Trail. This park is a popular picnic destination, as well.

Georgia Veterans Memorial Golf Course at Lake Blackshear State Park & Lodge in Cordele

Designed by Georgia golf course architect Denis Griffiths, this golf course features expertly placed mounds, water hazards, plenty of sand bunkers and stands of tall loblolly pines. Simply put, this beautiful and unique golf experience is recognized as the best value in the South.

At the park, the 8,700-acre Lake Blackshear is a perfect destination

for many water sports such as boating, fishing, paddle boarding, and kayaking. After leaving the lake, visit the military museum or check out the archery and air rifle range, both located inside the park.

Highland Walk Golf Course at Victoria Bryant State Park in Royston

From the first hole to the finishing hole, every golfer deals with many steep rolling hills, crowned fairways, and sloping Bermuda greens. While adding a certain degree of difficulty throughout the course, golf course architect Dennis Griffiths remembered to keep the course playable and fun.

At the park, facilities range from picnic sites and a swimming pool to a short nature trail. The park also offers a long perimeter trail that takes hikers through hardwood forests. In addition, the park is home to many species of birds, plants, and reptiles.

Arrowhead Pointe Golf Course at Richard B. Miller State Park near Elberton

This golf course is listed by GOLFPASS as being one of the best golf courses to play in the U.S. for under $100. Arrowhead Pointe,

where 10 of the 18 holes border beautiful Lake Richard B. Miller, is widely considered to be one of the finest and most picturesque golf courses along The Georgia Golf Trail.

Arrowhead Pointe truly deserves the ‘championship’ label. At the park, visitors are mountain biking, bicycling, hiking, boating, fishing, and swimming in the lake. Disc golf is also popular at Richard B. Miller State Park.

The Creek Golf Course at Hard Labor Creeek State Park in Rutledge

The Creek at Hard Labor Golf Course was built in a pristine, natural setting. With its Champion Bermuda greens and narrow treelined fairways, The Creek was named “4th sweetest deal in USA” by Golf Digest Frugal Golfer in 2010. It remains a great deal for golfers.

At the park, visitors are swimming alongside the lakeside beach, hiking and horseback riding along more than 24 miles of trails, and fishing in the lake. Overnight guests can choose from fully equipped cottages or a modern campground.

The New Timacuan Club Offers Special Summer Membership Program

The new Timacuan Club in Lake Mary, FL, offering Central Florida’s newest private club experience, has created a special summer membership to include up to five months for an introductory look at the new membership program.

The program will allow complete, unlimited access to all that Timacuan Club has to offer. That list includes world-class golf, dining, social events and more.

“While we continue to build our year-round membership, this program can give prospects a chance to experience our club,” said General Manager Jeff King. “For those in the area who would like to see what the Timacuan Club experience is all about before committing long term, this program gives them that opportunity. “

Timacuan went private at the end of 2022 after operating as a semi-private golf club since 1988. Links Asset Trust, a company owned by the principals of Resort Development Partners, a company known for revitalizing distressed private clubs, recently signed a 50-year lease to operate Timacuan

Club, with the goal of returning it to the standing it earned during its first two decades of existence, while converting the semi-private club to a private club.

“We are excited to show prospective members all the improvements we are making at Timacuan Club,” said King, “It started with the overseeding of the playing surfaces in November, just the beginning of the upgrades not only on the golf course, but in the building and services as a whole. Once they see the improvements we have already made, and learn of all of our plans for the future, we are sure Central Floridians will want to be a part of our club.”

Membership will provide access to the amenities and other services provided at the newly renovated Timacuan Club. Members also have access to the company’s owned and operated facilities in North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Indiana, South Carolina, and Virginia. Members will have exclusive access to all Club amenities. The Club plans to offer golf, dining, and improved member practice facilities.

From the moment it opened in 1988, Timacuan Club was a favorite among Central Florida

golfers and tournament directors who wanted a challenging, fair golf course with private clublevel service for their players.

The Ron Garl-designed layout hosted prestigious tournaments like U.S. Open Qualifiers, state championships and major junior competitions, and was ranked as high as No. 14 in Florida.

U.S. Open Champion Graeme McDowell said of Timacuan: “It is a great layout with a links-like feel to it. It can be testy in places if you get off the beaten path, but it is a very fair course.”

But after several ownership and management overhauls, things changed. Course conditioning slipped, revenues dropped, and players and tournaments turned to other courses.

That, however, is changing – and in a very big way.

CELEBRATING

PGA Tour “MARCHes” into Majors Season

In his opening remarks at his annual “State of the Union” address in the media center on Tuesday before THE PLAYERS Championship, PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan said, “It’s a great time to be a PGA TOUR fan and a PGA TOUR player.”

In case you missed it, the 2023 PGA TOUR schedule, with its newly created “designated event model,” has experienced a tremendously successful and exciting stretch of tournaments over the first three months of the year. The Official World Golf Ranking has seen three different major champions ascend to the #1 spot as it changed hands between Rory Mclroy, Scottie Scheffler and Jon Rahm.

The meritocracy “which is the fabric of the PGA TOUR” as defined by Commissioner Monahan, has shined brightly as golf fans have experienced some remarkable storylines of unexpected winners and breakout stars who, despite adversity, self-doubt, and many roads and countries traveled, have found their way into the PGA TOUR winner’s circle.

First there was the nailbiter finish at the Honda Classic at PGA National Golf Club in Palm Beach Gardens, where Chris Kirk narrowly beat Eric Cole in a one-hole playoff. Kirk who has been very open about his personal struggles with alcohol said after his

Golf Central • Volume 24, Issue 1 42 florida swing

first win since 2015, “I owe everything that I have in my entire life to my sobriety… I came really close to losing everything that I cared about.”

Cole, the son of former PGA TOUR winner Bobby Cole and former LPGA star Laura Baugh, was considered somewhat of a legend on the mini-tour circuit. A dubious distinction for most professional golfers dreaming to play on the PGA TOUR.

Cole won 56 times on the Minor League Golf Tour, a developmental tour based in Jupiter, Florida. Most recently in January, where he collected a $1300 winner’s check (the total purse was $9,000). Cole’s pay day for his runner-up finish at the Honda Classic, $915,600.

What a difference a putt, a round, a week can make on the PGA TOUR. But wait there’s more.

The following week at the Arnold Palmer Invitational at the Bay Hill Club and Lodge in Orlando, Kurt Kitayama beat a stacked leaderboard of PGA TOUR champions to win his first PGA TOUR title. At one point in the closing holes, it looked like there might be a record setting, seven-way playoff.

Kitayama who previously played on ten different global tours (yes, ten!) before qualifying for the PGA TOUR, managed to overcome a potential derailing triple bogey on the ninth hole, bounced back with a string of pars, then birdied the par-3 17th hole, and tapped in the winning putt on 18 after leaving his 50-foot birdie putt on the edge of the cup.

The Arnold Palmer Invitational is now a permanent designated event on the PGA TOUR with a purse of $20 million dollars. Kitayama nearly doubled his career earnings of $4.2 million dollars, with $3.6 million awarded for his first-place finish.

The kid they called “the Project” in college who struggled, worked hard, and grinded it out every day developing his game was now a champion at The King’s tournament.

That same week, the first opposite field event on the PGA TOUR was being played in Puerto Rico. After eight missed cuts including the Honda Classic, PGA TOUR rookie, Nico Echavarria, shot 21-under and became a first-time PGA TOUR winner at the 2023 Puerto Rico Open. His victory qualified the 28-year-old from Colombia to compete in his first PLAYERS Championship.

“We (pro golfers) picked a crazy career, a crazy sport, an individual sport, where all the blame is on

you and all the success is on you,” Echavarria reflected on his first win prior to THE PLAYERS.

“It’s a sport where you lose a lot more than you win; it’s a sport where you ride the highs and are at the very bottom of the lows. But also, you learn so much from this sport, because it’s very similar to life, you can be as hard with yourself or as easy as you can with yourself… (now) I’m a PGA TOUR winner for the rest of my life. No one is going to take that from me. I can’t be more happy.” THE PLAYERS at TPC Sawgrass,

Kurt Kitayama dons the famous red Alpaca sweater and holds the trophy after a dramatic win at the 2023 Arnold Palmer Invitational.

Pete Dye’s masterpiece and home of the infamous par-3 17th island green in Ponte Vedra Beach, is always packed with drama, intriguing back stories, and a mixed leaderboard of champions and some not so recognizable names.

This year did not disappoint. Chad Ramey, one of 31 first timers, shot a 64 and sat at the top of the leaderboard at 8-under after day one. Ben Griffin, who left professional golf in 2021 to become a mortgage broker, two years later, after regaining his desire and his PGA TOUR card, found himself two shots out of the lead after round two. Tom Hoge, after shooting 78 in his opening round, narrowly made the cut, then

In 2022, Scottie Scheffler won The Masters after capturing the Arnold Palmer Invitational. After capturing this year’s THE PLAYERS Championship, could he be in for another dominant year?

PGA TOUR sophmore and winner of the Valspar Championship, Taylor Moore, holds the trophy after outlasting some Tour heavyweights, including Jordan Spieth. to win.

carded a course record, 10-under 62 on Saturday, and closed with 70 on Sunday for a T-3, posting his career best finish at THE PLAYERS.

The marquis group in the opening two rounds featured Rory McIlroy, Scottie Scheffler and Jon Rahm. Only Scheffler survived after 36 holes, eventually beating the toughest field in golf with a resounding 5-shot win while reclaiming his position as No. 1 in the world.

It was hard to tell by Scheffler’s humble and grounded demeanor in his post-round presser, if he was more excited about winning THE PLAYERS and

claiming the $4.5 million first prize or going to his 88-year-old Grandma’s house (who he acknowledged for having walked all 72 holes) to celebrate and enjoy one of her homemade desserts.

The fourth and final leg of the Florida Swing concluded with the Valspar Championship and a wild shot-making finish on the Copperhead course at Innisbrook Resort outside Tampa.

Taylor Moore closed with a 4under 67 for his first PGA TOUR win. He outlasted Jordan Spieth, Adam Schenk and Tommy Fleetwood navigating his way through the infamous “Snake Pit” – known for being one of the toughest closing three holes on the PGA TOUR.

The 29-year-old Moore was a rookie last season.

His first-time win was worth $1,458,000. Moore jumped to No. 9 in the FedEx Cup standings and also qualified for the 2023 Masters and PGA Championship.

Yes Jay Monahan, it IS a great time to be a PGA TOUR fan and a PGA TOUR player.

Different Paths Lead to the Same Destination for Stephanie Reeves and Sam Coleman

When thinking of typical punishments for 13-year-olds, making them go to a golf course to be around the game is not the first that would come to mind. While a punishment at the time, nearly 30 years later, the “punishment” has turned into Stephanie Reeves, PGA’s life.

For almost ten years, Reeves has served as the Director of Golf at Countryside Golf and Country Club, but her path to becoming a Class-A PGA member was not always the easiest.

At 13, Reeves was introduced to the game of golf, but not in a typical manner. After a school incident that had her suspended for a number of days, Reeves was forced to go to the golf course to learn about the game. Shortly thereafter, Reeves grew a liking for the game and quickly realized she was pretty good at it.

“My mom was not going to let me stay home and enjoy myself so she took me to the golf course,” explained Reeves. “When I was there I realized I was the only girl and there were other young boys

that played, so as a 13-year-old girl I thought this was pretty cool.”

After catching on quickly, Reeves joined the high school team and eventually had the opportunity to play college golf at Siena College where she led her team in scoring average and was named to the MAAC Women’s Golf All-Academic team as a Junior.

Graduating with a finance degree, Reeves knew her passion was still in golf and decided to enroll in the PGA Program in Port St. Lucie while taking a seasonal position in Naples.

Upon finishing the program, Reeves obtained an Assistant Professional position at Bear’s Paw before eventually moving to Countryside as an Assistant Professional and ultimately becoming the Director of Golf in 2014.

As an Assistant, Reeves knew she had the ability to lead a team and become a Director of Golf but knew the odds were stacked against her as a female in a traditionally maledominated role.

“You kind of feel like you beat the odds,” she explained. “When I applied for this position here at Countryside there were roughly 90 applicants.”

Now, as a leader in her field, Reeves is passionate about growing the game and encouraging other females to enter the industry, believing the opportunities for women exist.

As a result, Reeves has had the opportunity to mentor and guide another young female, Samantha Coleman, PGA who serves as an Assistant Professional and Head of Merchandising at Countryside Golf

and Country Club.

Coleman, a South Florida PGA Junior Tour Alum, had a different path to becoming a Class-A PGA member, taking the Professional Golf Management route while an undergraduate at Florida Gulf Coast University.

During her time on the Junior Tour, Coleman was introduced to the PGM program through a South Florida PGA College Seminar, led by industry professionals, former junior tour members and FGCU PGM Director, Tara McKenna, PGA.

As a sophomore in high school, Coleman immediately knew this was her path as she recalled looking at her dad and saying how cool it sounded while listening to McKenna explain what the PGM program was.

As Coleman began the program, she was introduced to Reeves who served as a mentor for up and coming female PGA Professionals at FGCU. The two kept in contact as Coleman continued at FGCU as the only female in a class of 36 people.

While being the only female in her class, Coleman said she never felt discouraged or out of place, but

took it more as encouragement to continue keeping her head down as she knew there was a path for her.

Fast forward to her senior year, Coleman had already spent one season interning at Countryside, as she began looking for full-time positions, Countryside was in need of Assistant Professionals, so Coleman called her mentor Reeves and before graduating she was hired full-time.

The two now share a special bond as two female professionals with very different routes to where they are now, but their outlook on the industry and the potential for more females in the profession has never been more positive.

When asked for words of encouragement for females interested in pursuing a career in golf, their answers were simple but held a strong message.

“If you are passionate about it, go do it,” Reeves explained.

“There is so much that you can do in the industry, but until you get there, you don’t truly know,” said Coleman. “There is really no limit on what you can do.”

It’s been a busy month for our Association and our PGA Professionals! Greg Koch, PGA (Ritz-Carlton Golf Club- Grande Lakes Orlando) recently competed in the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Arnold Palmer’s Bay Hill Club & Lodge and made the cut after the first two rounds of play. The reigning NFPGA Player of the Year had a great showing at this year’s event, and he represented the Section very well!

Nominations for the 2023 NFPGA Hall of Fame inductees recently closed, and the deliberation process will begin soon. The NFPGA Hall of Fame was started in 1991 to honor outstanding North Florida PGA Members who have impacted the game and business with the North Florida PGA. It is tough to get excited about playing golf when the thermometer is telling you to stay in your warm, cozy bed. Sure, you could tee it up with four layers and stay relatively warm, but your swing will be restricted from all that clothing. Thanks to the tried and true products from Zerofit, however, now it is possible to play golf and stay comfortable without bundling up in all those layers.

Designed in Japan, Zerofit baselayers offer best-in-class innovations and technologies to keep you active outside throughout the year.

The award-winning Heatrub Ultimate baselayer was unveiled to the Japanese public in 2011 and since then hundreds of thousands of outdoor enthusiasts have discovered the benefits of that best-in-class product. The Ultimate allows for total mobility and comfort with amazing warmth. The Boken Institute in Osaka, Japan, tested the heat retention of the Zerofit Ultimate baselayer

and it was proven to be five times warmer than leading competitors.

The technology in the threads is activated by movement, generating heat instantly. The “doubleloop” barrel fabric provides both heat insulation and “friction heating” via extra-long bristles. These bristles ensure that a layer of warm air is retained around the body, and even a little movement of the bristles causes friction, which creates

heat and actually warms you up.

If you need a garment for cool weather but not freezing temperatures, Zerofit’s “Move” line of products are still twice as warm as a traditional baselayer and allow for unrestricted mobility and maximum comfort.

Other Zerofit products include hoodies, leggings, sleeves and products designed to cool users down in hot summer weather.

Spiro Carbon Introduces Its "Defend The Green" Sustainability Program for the Golf Industry

Spiro Carbon Group, an international firm dedicated to providing carbon reduction pathways to all stakeholders, has retained Scottsdale, Arizonabased Synergy Group Consulting, a leading expert in the golf industry, to develop their “Defend the Green” initiative. Spiro Carbon’s Climate Smart Golf Solutions will be introduced and expanded globally under the direction of Ted Simons, CEO and President of Synergy Group Consulting.

Spiro Carbon is changing the way the world approaches carbon projects. Their proprietary method of automating and digitizing the Monitoring, Reporting, & Verification of climate impacting activities allows projects to work at any scale, including very small plots. This opens access to millions of potential beneficiaries worldwide and is helping to drive new greenhouse gas reduction at unprecedented scale. With this platform, anyone can fund the transition from conventional to climate-friendly farming practices and the creation of socially conscious carbon credits

by small-holder farmers.

According to Ted Simons, “Spiro’s Climate Smart Golf Solution will provide golf course and golf facility operators a clear and understandable pathway to becoming carbon neutral. Once the initial Spiro Carbon Golf Audit has been completed, an overall strategy is developed to effectively reduce each facility’s carbon footprint. Any remaining CO2 residual emissions can be addressed through Spiro Carbon’s discounted Certified Carbon Offset program. Welcome back Turf Pirate’s and I hope that the 2023 Golf Season is off and running! This month’s spin is a bit serious. I have been blessed to have a wide variety of experiences in my life and one of them is the value of walking. Thus, this month’s photo of a great Pirate themed race medal I earned recently with the catch line, “Run, I thought they said, Rum”. We all need a bit of bait and switch to keep motivated and moving especially when it’s pirate themed. It is pretty well documented that in my fifties I lost track of my health and kept burning the candle at both ends and found some pretty serious health issues to add to my daily obstacle list. I had to make a change, well several changes. My doctors advised me to stay low impact after the injuries sustained from many high impact endeavors. Some medications available to most were not available to me (Allergic). I looked into the future Turf Pirates and I was not in it.

The fullness of my health improvement plan that has since been approved for anyone to evaluate by the Ancient and Honorable Tribe of Turf Pirates and was extremely effective. Tough times sometimes require radical action but sometimes it’s more basic action, more remembering. My plan was to mimic my childhood on the farm in Indian Creek, Georgia. I would eat better and move more. I fast sometimes like I did as a kid when the fish were biting and lunch seemed

Turf Pirate's Journal $Just Keep Stepping $

less important. I eat real food again not processed energy, sugar, carbs and fast food that speeds us to the grave (shout out to my cousin Remo). I started walking, not running or rocking the heavy bag like a 20-year-old NiDan. Just a good old power walk (shout out to my buddy and legendary Turf Pirate, Pat Jones). I walked a lot, all over the place actually. I did my first GCSAA 5K in person in 2020 and during Covid I did big time virtual events. I walked a virtual walk down Route 66 over 1,000 miles and finished in San Diego at the live GCSAA Health In Action 5K posting my best time of 39 minutes (check out the picture of Me and GCSAA CEO Rhett Evans). I lost 100 pounds, got my vitals back in line. I still occasionally struggle with old habits and the pressure of high expectations with limited resources (I am still after all in the Golf Turf Business). I have a system that works for me in this season of life and when the going gets tough

I just keep stepping. I have a cheat day every now and then usually timed to a good ball game or turf event. I am 59 years old and the future looks different now than a few years ago, better BRIGHTER.

The challenge this month Turf Pirates is this, what radical change could you make that would change everything? Look deep and see if a small thing done daily or a big thing done now may change your stars. In closing, I wanted to share a deep personal story. In 2001, I was inducted into the International Martial Arts Hall of Fame in Orlando, Florida and bought a tuxedo for the event. At my heaviest I held that tuxedo and thought I wish I could wear this again. Each step, each milestone, each set back, each adjustment all came together. I wore that tuxedo again in December 2022 to a Four Season’s Employee Gala in Dallas, Texas and it fit perfectly. Be who you choose to be Turf Pirates and keep stepping.

Ryder Cup course architect reveals a design for drama

With just six months to go until The 2023 Ryder Cup in Rome, course designer Dave Sampson says fans can expect great drama on the all new Marco Simone Golf & Country Club golf course.

Speaking on the Syngenta Growing Golf podcast, Sampson reveals the thinking behind a course fit for the world’s best players – and the need to create back nine drama.

“When you’re designing a Ryder Cup course, you’re not just trying to find an 18-hole golf course or the best 18 holes on that land, you’re trying to find the best 18 golf holes for fans and spectators,” he explains.

“In laying out the golf course we consciously tried to factor in key vantage points to add to the drama.

“The back nine especially is laced with risk-reward holes, drama and everything that a Ryder Cup course we feel should be.”

Sampson’s design maximizes the land’s natural elevation changes, showcasing views which, on a clear day, extend to St Peter’s Basilica.

The designer, born in England and raised in South Africa, also tells host Gary Firkins how his interest in design started, the unconventional breakthrough that sparked his career and reveals the inner workings behind preparing a course for an event of such magnitude as The Ryder Cup – including the importance of his relationship with Golf Course Superintendent Lara Arias and her turf team as they diligently finetune the course over the coming months.

Making courses sustainable and accessible

As golf courses come under increased scrutiny for their environmental credentials, Sampson also details the proactive steps they have taken at Marco Simone to create a vibrant,

sustainable environment. This includes choosing a grass type requiring 30% less irrigation inputs than the typical strain.

Away from Marco Simone, Sampson speaks of the growing

importance of accessibility and routing, from efficiency with land use to creating course designs which allow for loops of 3, 6 or 9 holes, creating different playing options for customers.

TPC Louisiana Prepares Celebration® Bermudagrass

Course Ahead of PGA TOUR Event

The entire staff at TPC Louisiana is staying very busy in the few weeks leading up to the PGA TOUR making its way to Avondale, Louisiana, a suburb southwest of New Orleans.

TPC Louisiana’s Superintendent, Tyler McCool, joined the staff nearly seven years ago after working at a course in Mississippi for four years. McCool, who holds a degree in agronomy with an emphasis in golf management

from Mississippi State University, has a longtime love for golf and course management. He was hired under the direction of Brandon Reese and took over as superintendent when Reese left for TPC Scottsdale in 2021.

Shortly after McCool came to TPC Louisiana, the course’s irrigation system was renovated and in 2019 the entire course was re-grassed. Celebration® Bermudagrass was installed on the fairways, approaches and practice

tee. Simpson Sod, a sod farm in Covington, LA, supplied 35 acres of Celebration for the renovation.

“For us, Celebration® Bermudagrass is really aggressive. With a tournament date in April, it works really well for us because we get some growth throughout the winter, which helps with recovery. It greens up pretty well with some fertility and it’s green for us pretty much throughout the year,” McCool said.

“We approached Simpson Sod early on in the grass selection process and told them what we were looking for. They didn’t have the acreage we needed so they planted another field. They welcomed us to stop and visit to see the conditions as the turfgrass was growing in.”

Simpson Sod even went as far as to mow the grass with a reel mower to get the Celebration down to playing height, which

McCool said was huge for TPC Louisiana, given the installation happened in late summer. McCool explained this put the grass at a perfect height for going into winter and put them a step ahead for the tour event in April.

The new course grass was sodded in August 2019, but the anticipated 2020 tour event was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic. “It would have been a great event, the sun was out that week and new grass would have been perfect but unfortunately it was canceled.”

Celebration Bermudagrass is currently on seven golf courses being played in the 2023 PGA TOUR season. McCool complimented both the color and recovery of Celebration, agreeing it’s a great

grass for TPC Louisiana. “We can mow it at any height. From two inches in the rough, to below half an inch in the short grass, it’s versatile and aggressive growing. It recovers well from divots or

any damage the turf is going to receive. We really go out and put a lot of cultural practices on it in the summer and beat it up. It recovers really well and prepares it for a late spring tour event.”

Rounds 4 Research Auction Kicks off April 24 with Opportunities to Golf at Nearly 1,000 Courses

GCSAA Foundation Program has Raised More Than $2.5 million Since 2012.

Rounds 4 Research presents its 2023 online auction April 24-April 30. Nearly 1,000 rounds of golf (each round includes two or four players) have been donated at courses in 43 states plus Bermuda and Costa Rica. Rounds are added daily, so check back often. To preview rounds and to bid when the auction opens, visit www.rounds4research.com.

Rounds 4 Research is a venture of the GCSAA Foundation, the philanthropic organization of the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA). It is presented in partnership with The Toro Co. Funds generated from the auction support research-related initiatives of GCSAA and its af-

filiated chapters. Since launching in 2012, Rounds 4 Research has raised more than $2.5 million for turfgrass research, education and advocacy programs. In 2022, the auction raised a record amount of more than $490,000. Funds raised by the event also help support GCSAA’s national research program.

“Rounds 4 Research gives golfers the chance to help fund efforts that help ensure the game’s future and do it while playing the game they love,” said Rhett Evans, chief executive officer of GCSAA. “Last year’s auction set our all-time record, and through the generosity of the facilities and management companies that donate and the golfers who bid, we hope to exceed

that this year.”

Some of the high profile facilities that have donated rounds for the auction include Old Memorial Golf Club in Tampa, Fla., TPC Summerlin in Las Vegas, Nev., Ohoopee Match Club in Cobbtown, Ga., Innisbrook Resort and Golf Club in Palm Harbor, Fla., Frederica Golf Club in Saint Simons Island, Ga., Sutton Bay in Agar, S.D., and Nanea Golf Club in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii.

Several management companies also have joined the effort to support research, including Invited, Dormie Network, Founders Group International, GreatLIFE KC, Indigo Golf, KemperSports, Marriott Golf, the PGA Tour TPC network of courses and Troon Golf.
