The war in Ukraine and the subsequent energetic, eco nomic, social, and humanitarian crisis – along with a still undefeated Covid pandemic – created a very complex sit uation for Europe. Still, there are good news for the Pool and Spa Industry: the market keeps growing and the new outdoor concept, indirectly supported by this delicate in ternational scenario, is propelling the aquatic industry to ward a whole new era.
On the eve of a particularly difficult winter for Europe and, in general, for the whole international community, it’s al most unbelievable the unstoppable growth of the Pool and Spa Industry. Nearly all the economical and financial areas are affected by what’s happening in Ukraine and by Rus sia’s response to the sanctions inflicted against Moscow's economy by the Council of the European Union and still, the Pool market has been experiencing significant growth since 2020 – the year when the Pandemic spread – and it’s poised to keep growing from 2022 to 2026 by $4.60 billions, accelerating at a CAGR of 2.67%, and, according to The Globe Newswire, is projected to reach USD 4171.10 million by 2028. As claimed by Technavio, which published a report about the Swimming Pool Market, large-scale ur banization is one of the main factors boosting the glob al swimming pool industry. The developed building mar kets in nations like the US, UK, Spain, and Germany have been forced to concentrate on improving the quality of the current residential infrastructures due to the rapid popu lation expansion. As cities become increasingly crowded, there will be a greater need for residential infrastructure, which will fuel the growth of the pool market through out the forecast period. Also, one of the major pool mar ket trends that are expected to have a positive effect on the sector throughout the projected period is tourism in crease. The industry is expanding because of the low-cost airlines, the abundance of hotels that provide lodging at various price points, and the high purchasing power of the populace. The dynamic packages, which provide an inclu sive price for a specific package ordered by the buyer on a whim, are now being offered by online retailers. Furthermore, government bonuses – and the roller-coast ing prices of gas – spurred a major use of energy and wa ter efficiency measures, contributing to adding a touch of green to a whole industry.
When we talk about Italy, we also talk about good taste, class, and elegance. We are country of travelers, poets, and writers, but also of stylists and architects renowned all over the world. Therefore, it is obvious that the tastes expressed by consumers and the market trends observed in recent years require a certain level of manufacturing. A function al design, often integrated with hi-tech elements, but able to preserve an image of beauty linked to the natural and not too artificial, able to fit harmoniously into any context, be it urban or countryside, in particular, this is what the Ital
ian public is looking for today. The pool must be beauti ful, comfortable, well-equipped, and eco-friendly. Today, a greater attention is paid to technologies (and best prac tices) that help to preserve resources and reduce con sumption, without however renouncing the pleasure of a dip in the water. If we consider exclusively the looks, the pools are mostly characterized by polygonal shapes, with the rectangle that dominates undisputed. Ever the diva of the scene, the pool is often accompained with wide stair ways, soft beaches, elegant steps, design elements, and everything that might enhance its shape or maximise its ‘power’, like hydromassage areas, refined seats, and fur nishing elements. The suggestive infinity edges, the PVC and stone coverings, the underwater LED spotlights, and the modestly sized solarium areas are also among the most loved and indispensable elements.
Awareness of the importance of safeguarding the envi ronment and, consequently, the future of the Planet, has reached public opinion in a karst way. By eroding precon ceptions and prejudices, disinterest and disinformation a little at a time, until recently a new awareness has matured regarding the need to do more and quickly, to contain the already disastrous effects of pollution, climate change, and global warming. As citizens, companies, and owners of ho tels or wellness centers, we can do our part and quite eas ily. rumPiscine – the International Pool and Spa Expo & Con gress – presented the Self-sufficient Pool, an eco-friend ly, zero-impact swimming pool. The representation of how technology, automation, sustainability, and self-sufficiency can – and must – coexist together in the aquatic system, a model that's not only a construction methodology but a sum of technical devices and good practices united under an avant-garde concept that’s extremely necessary, in an era when fresh and clean water is becoming an increasing ly rare commodity.
The concept of "pool environment" has a multitude of meanings. If we consider this area from an architectural
point of view we need to evaluate what is needed, in terms of works, to furnish a house, from the colour of the walls to the sofas for the living room. In the cinema, on the other hand, it corresponds to the scenography, the outline of a specific moment, and a script of a story. On closer inspec tion, however, there is no dissonance between one mean ing and another, and between one definition and another. The setting is – in every sense – the outline. And the outline is essential to convey an effect, a feeling, or an emotion. A scene, at the cinema, doesn’t end with the actors and if we translate on the pool, it’s clear that beyond the water, the fi nal scenography is determined by all the elements that – so to speak – get caught in the framing of the camera.

As we said, at the heart of it all, there is the pool. Water is of course the true protagonist of our story. However, this doesn’t mean that the pool environment is exhausted with this element, quite the contrary. The garden, the terrace, the balcony: what unites these spaces is the idea behind a project, a scenography made up of a multitude of fac tors. And this macro-category that includes the outdoors at 360 ° – from decks to gazebos, to pergolas, so to speak – represents today a new sector that is in a full swing. In a word, Outex. A new event dedicated to the outdoor expe rience, that will take place at the same time and in synergy with ForumPiscine – the one Italian Pool and Spa Expo and Congress – to display the most innovative, eco-friendly, el egant, modern and hi-tech products that the market has to offer. Light has acquired the status of architec tural element and technologies connected to illumination are very popular. Expecially when they ‘join forces’ with wa ter: the swimming pool, in itself, is already an evocative el ement, but we can move it with waterfalls, gargoyles, and geysers, with the bonus of being able to enjoy the mag nificent sound of the pouring water. The 2023 edition of ForumPiscine will not only be an event organized to exhibit all the latest international in novations offered by the market, combined with a top-lev el conference focused on discussing and analysing the cur rent issues of the industry. With an attentive eye on the future – both in the short and long term – and driven by an inexhaustible desire to seek and research, understand,
inform, innovate and renew, ForumPiscine, which will take place in Bologna from 15 to 17 February 2023, is meant to be a veritable global event. BolognaFiere, the exhibition centre of the capital of the Italian region called Emilia-Ro magna, will become the centre of the swimming pool and spa world for three days, to combine the thousand shades of water into one thrilling colour.
Let's start with culture. The first great news of ForumPis cine 2023 is that this event has been chosen (for the first time ever during a trade fair) to host the 10th International Conference on Swimming Pool & Spa (ICSPS), the prestig ious global conference dedicated to the bathing and ther mal water of swimming pools and spas, promoted by the Istituto Superiore di Sanità and the Foro Italico University of Rome. This important conference is intended to be an opportunity for research and development in our sector and a global event for a discussion on the themes related to health protection, safety and quality of recreational water. The conference will attract a qualified cosmopolitan audi ence of academics and renowned experts and researchers to the Italian Swimming Pool Show for a first-level train ing opportunity that will take place simultaneously with the presentation of new products and solutions for the next season by the companies of the sector. The conference will be chaired and attended by a parterre of names and per sonalities from the international academic world and from some of the most prestigious healthcare institutions, who will meet at ForumPiscine to discuss public health, the de velopment of a safe and sustainable approach and the dis semination of a culture of health promotion through rec reational waters. Some of the key topics that will be at the heart of the debate at the 10th International Conference on Swimming Pool & Spa are: the “One Health” approach to recreational water use; environmentally-sustainable inno vation in pool design and management; microbiological, chemical and physical risk; indoor air quality and correct microclimate; guidelines and regulations; water fitness and

In addition to the exciting news that ForumPiscine has in store for the 2023 edi tion, the event will of course also include one of the most anticipated events re garding the Italian Swimming Pool and Spa Show: the Italian Pool Award, which recognises the best made-in-Italy products of the swimming pool universe. Launched by the magazine “Piscine Oggi” in 2010, the award has been estab lished to officially recognise excellence in the Italian pool industry. Every year the Italian Pool Award is given to well-designed and well-built pools that stood out for their technology, design, integration with the environment, and focus on water saving or energy efficiency. Designers, companies, accommodation facilities and even private individuals are eligible for the award. The Italian Pool Award has 5 basic categories: Residential outdoor, Residential indoor, Commer cial outdoor, Commercial indoor, and Biopool. In addition, since the first edition of Outex will be held this year, the Jury will award a Special Mention to those candidates that will distinguish themselves for projects where the swimming pool is inserted in its context by creating a harmonious dialogue and a correla tion between water and the surrounding landscape, within which it has been in troduced artificially. In other words, an extra prize will go to the best pool set ting. In addition to this, as always, pictures will be taken of all the pools in the competition for a photographic exhibition that will be displayed during all the three days of ForumPiscine, with free access for all visitors.

Last February, in the international setting of ForumPiscine, the professionalism, passion and dedicated work of Italian swimming pool and spa designers and installers was celebrated again during the eleventh edition of the Italian Pool Award. The applauses that animated the awards ceremony reminded us that this sector is more alive than ever, reaping the fruits of the work done even during the harsh times of the pandemic, when the demand of the Italian res idential market remained strong and had no cri sis. So, it was even more pleasant to meet again, after the forced pause in 2021, to celebrate the 5 winners of the competition launched by Pis cine Oggi and watch them receive the famous bronze statuette designed by Osvaldo Casano va and made by the ancient foundry “Fonderia Merighi Arte” of Bologna. This was also an opportunity to take stock of the sector. The candidate pool designs con firmed the taste of consumers and the market trends observed in recent years: a functional de sign, often integrated with high-tech features, but still with a natural and not-too-construct ed beauty, that can be installed with harmo ny in any context, be it the city or the country. Pools are required to be beautiful, comforta ble, well-equipped and environmentally friend ly. Today more than ever, customers want tech nologies and are more aware of best practices that contribute to preserve resources and re duce consumption, without giving up the pleas ure of a dip in the water. With a focus on aes thetics, the pools are mainly characterized by polygonal shapes, with the rectangle remaining the undisputed champion. The scene was dom inated by pool entries, going from wide stairs to
soft sand beaches, elegant steps, and a range of design choices that add a touch of class to the whole basin. In some instances, the pool entry is the main area, enriched with hydromassage hot tubs, refined seating areas and furnishings. Evocative infinity edge pools, PVC and stone cladding, submersible LED spotlights and mod erate-sized solarium areas remain the most pop ular and must-have features. All this was shown to the visitors of the photographic exhibition dedicated to the 45 candidates of the Italian Pool Award, which put the Italian pool market on stage during the 3 days of ForumPiscine with a representative collection of the production of the sector.

Polimpianti started in 1975 in the town of Azzate, near the city of Varese. The dehumidifiers series SP and SPW have been spe cifically designed for small pools and spas, where a large drying capacity is needed to effectively prevent the damages caused by high humidity levels. CANALE ANTONIO is a company that deals with fiberglass, especially in the con struction of filters for water treatment. Since 1973, the company has been producing FRP Filters for water treatment to the following standards: UNI 10637, DIN 19605 1964319644, Ö-Norm M6216, SIA, GOST, etc. Over the years, Canale Antono has specialized in producing bobbin wound filters with radial and polar windings using machines designed and builded by itself. The company can construct small filters for private pools and especially large-size filters for hotels, public water systems, thermal spas, and recreational facilities.
CEMI’s prefilter is made of HDPE (high density polyethylene) with flanged inlet and outlet connections, quick opening plexiglass lid and a removable stainless steel basket. Situated at the front of the delivery with respect to the pump, the basket retains the largest impurities and its removal simplifies management. Plus, internal cleaning and debris removal is quick and easy.
ETATRON developed various series of products designed for swimming pools application. Among these, ePool, a peristaltic pump with controller built-in, pH or Redox, with dosing proportional at the measure value; the dosing could be connected to the recirculating pump, furthermore the de vice is equipped with a relay suitable to manage an additional pump or any other device. eTwin, with double control, pH/ Rx or pH/Chlorine, could be equipped with two solenoid or peristaltic pumps, very easy to manage; equipped with three additional relay selectable from the user, to manage also other functions of the swimming pools.

INJECTA proposes Helios 01, which is a digital panel composed of: digital electromagnetic pumps equipped with pH/Rx measure ment instrument (Athena PR Series); pH probe, Redox probe and low level probe; by-pass probe holder with plexiglass flow sensor; filter; PVC panel 40 × 60 cm, buffer solution (pH-Redox). All compo nents are assembled and cabled.
DEPA manufactures grates for gutter in 16 models and 16 standard colors, such as green, blue, grey, crème, yellow, orange, etc. Depa can offer linear and bendable grates, roll-up and rigid grates, with perpendicular or parallel elements. The grates are studied for heavy duty purposes. All grates are manufactured in Green PVC or PP of high quality with special additives against UV ray and against crashes. Depa grates are covered with a long time warranty all over the world. Depa grates don’t yellow and don’t breake down.

EMEC designed Centurio Pool, the innovative digital control system for pool water treat ment. Featuring a large colour touchscreen, high-performance operating system and mi croprocessor, it has 10 measurement channels and can handle the shock chlorination and dechlorination cycle, water level and tempera ture, cover control, lighting and water features.
FWT offers CTRL 2/6 POOL, a tool that helps dosing and monitoring pH and chlorine levels. The device, which has a compact structure, has been designed for ease of use and meets market technology standards, is ideal for water treatment in residen tial swimming pools, and can be installed in confined spaces. In the Expert menu, to be used by pro fessionals, more specific settings are available to use PWM (pulsewidth modulation) to control power**, hysteresis and for more advanced safety functions, such as the overdose and maximum dosage time.
STEIEL produces a full range of Eas yFlo® dispensers, based on an agree ment with the world’s leading calcium hypochlorite brand, HTH®. Starting from calcium hypochlorite in briquettes, these devices generate a ready-to-use chlorinated solution on-demand to disinfect the pool water. To suit the size and bather load of the pool, EasyFlo® dispensers are available in various sizes, with different biocidal load capacities. They can be controlled from a Steiel controller equipped with a measur ing system, which monitors the level of chlorine in the pool and activates its production when it falls below the required threshold. EasyFlo® dispens ers are easy and safe to install and use, require minimal maintenance and opti mize chemical dosing, without waste.
FITT produces B-Active Flex and Rigid tubes, completely made in Italy with patented technologies. Adaptable to any type of line, it reduces the cost of curved parts, with up to 50% in savings.
FAVARETTI designed Isola, a functional, automatic product capable of ensuring high safety standards in both private and public settings. It is a mobile terrace, built with a steel frame and covered with load-bearing wood panels, that withstands up to 350 kg per square metre. A pool surface can be transformed, in just a few minutes, into an area to be used at your leisure for din ners with friends, parties or as a solarium. Isola even offers two important benefits during colder months, as it protects the pool from the weather, while preserving the elegance of the garden throughout the winter.
G&G PARTNERS presents the automatic Roll Up cover with Smart Energy insulated slats which represents an inno vative solution capable of guar anteeing considerable savings on the operating and mainte nance costs of the pool, keep ing water temperature constant and limiting evaporation. The slats adapt to any shape and are weather-proof and resistant to low temperatures, as they are made of coextruded PVC.
POLYFASER offers a wide range of swimming pool enclosures, with medium-height covers being the most popular product. Polyfaser's medi um-height enclosures provide the utmost stability and plenty of room for entertainment. The Rubin model, in particular, conveys the idea of air, light and space in abundance, thanks to its semi-circular shape with transparent, impact-resistant polycar bonate windows and a rotating door in the front panel that opens upwards. The aluminium frame is strong and durable, allowing the cover to withstand even heavy snow loads.
AQUATECH offers Mediterranee, the automatic winding system to be positioned on the edge of the pool, suitable for existing and/or newly built pools. Its use is very simple and fast: in a very short time, you will be able to install your automatic cover without further expenses for masonry works. Mediterranee complies with the NF P 90-308 stand ard, it has ultrasonically welded caps, a poolside system and PVC slats 8.00 cm wide.
POLIMPIANTI offers a wide range of quality covers, including Rae Guard and RaeGuard Solarweave, designed to maximize heat retention thanks to their tailor-made reflective properties, which are able to reduce heat losses from the surface of a swimming pool by up to 57%. C.P.A. offers a wide range of products, included a new line of wall accessories in ABS, designed by the technical department of the company and in line with the current safety regulations (UNI EN 13451-3). The accessories, produced in Italy through molding, are available in different colors to adapt to any swimming pool and any aesthetic request. Among the novelties we mention the GM-27 nozzles with loop or threaded, which allow a second use as well, having a double housing for the flange fastening.
CUOGHI designs and builds various types of dehu midifiers, including the SP and SPW series, which are available in three power ranges, from 50* to 120* L/ day, both for installation in the environment (SP) and for installation in the machine room adjacent to the area to be dehumidified (SPW). Electronic control, which is provided as standard on all models, uses a sophisticat ed humidity and temperature probe and can be easily mounted externally to the machine in the best position for the user. The functionalities of the appliance are completed by optional heating accessories, such as the electric resistor or the hot water battery. SP/SPW series dehumidifiers are updated to the new low GWP gases, as per most recent EU legislation.
GERIT produces a wide range of swimming pool accessories, including air nozzles for installation in PVC-coated reinforced concrete swimming pools. These nozzles allow installers to simply fit female PVC fittings in the desired positions and glue the PVC bases to complete each nozzle. Each base comes with a protective cover for the casting and finishing phase. Flanging can be completed safely using an AISI 316L stainless steel grange and 3 countersunk screws, which can be screwed into the previously wall-mounted PVC base. The ABS or AISI 316L stainless steel nozzle can be screwed from above when all the work is done, to hide all the flanging components.
LED ITALY manufactures 100% made-in-Italy linear LED prod ucts. Its array of products includes the flexible LED profiles of the MIDI LINE, ideal for the lighting of fountains and swimming pools. The 10x11mm PVC sheath and polyurethane resin coating provide protection against the harmful effects of UV light and the corrosive action of salt and sodium hypochlorite. The series is available in different flexibilities, light tones and with different mounting accessories for easy installation and maintenance. The products are watertight and suitable for use in damp outdoor areas exposed to weather and submersion, having passed IP68 product rating tests.
HIDEW expanded its range of air change and heat recovery dehumidifiers with the introduction of the integrated units SRO/SRV, ideal for water bodies up to 30 m2 in size. Thanks to their compact structure, these units can be mounted either horizontally on the ceiling (SRO) or vertically in the base (SRV) even in limited spaces. Ad vanced control options allow users to manage temper ature and humidity levels independently and efficiently, thus ensuring low energy consumption and high comfort. Air sanitation is obtained with the cold plasma JR module that can be integrated to actively control the healthiness of indoor air.
POLIMPIANTI developed new controllers for Aq uamatic covers and winding systems. The two ver sions available, PRO and BASIC, ensure improved energyefficiency and ease of use, simplifying the installation and programming process for techni cians. The PRO controller provides clear messages about the configuration of the system. Electronics then ensures that the direction of installation of the engine is recognized without any need to modify the wiring, controls the speed and distance of the approaching ramps during the opening and closing of the cover, and deactivates the pumps and the chlorinator when the pool is closed. In addition, a dedicated app allows users to easily manage the controller on their smartphone, for a quick calibra tion of the limit switches from the pool side. JANUS ENERGY designed Sunnyday ‘On the rocks’, the solar panel with a special flattened shape of the channels (5.5 mm wide) that allows them to ab sorb the expansion due to frozen water without breaking. Sunnyday is built with a particularly robust copolymer polypropylene mix, compatible with food uses and resistant to aggres sive chemicals. These features allow water to be directly heated inside the panel, whether it is sanitary water or a swimming pool water, with considerable benefits in terms of simplicity, cost and efficiency of the system.
