hapes, materials, technologies, accessories, finishing, details, innovative and sometimes extravagant styles: Italian swimming pools are a concentrate of aesthetics and technology that, combined in many different ways, produce extremely attractive installations throughout the entire National territory. Today the market offers a vast variety of technical and structural options that allow swimming pools to be placed virtually everywhere: from ground floors to the top of skyscrapers or living rooms in a house. Not to mention all the accessories for fun and wellness that can be added to the pool and the surrounding

areas to create, with an endless variety of finishes, unique water corners that perfectly suit your taste. Indeed, transforming a dream that has been in our mind into reality is not always an easy job, and swimming pools are a work of high craftsmanship, but Italian companies fortunately excel in this task. When we talk about Italy, indeed, we also talk about good taste, class, and elegance. Therefore, it is obvious that the tastes expressed by consumers and the market trends observed in recent years require a certain level of manufacturing. of beauty linked to the natural and not too artificial, able to fit harmoniously into any context, be it urban or countryside, in particular, this is what the Italian public is looking for today. Despite the uncertain political and economic situation we are experiencing, there is good news for the Italian Pool and Spa Industry: as reported by the latest data released by the National Council for Economy and Labour, and by the Italian Association of Swimming Pool Builders, the swimming pool market currently continues to record strong growth in Italy, with one pool every 850 inhabitants, for a total of approximately 156 thousand private structures throughout the national territory. This is a positive trend which by the end of 2023 promises to further improve the numbers recorded in the previous two years by Deloitte, according to which the sector had recorded a turnover of around 1 billion euros in 2021, with a growth of 12% compared to 2019. ITALIAN TASTE Made in Italy knows no bounds: thanks to their skills and experience, Italian pool designers and manufacturers create incredibly beautiful and unique scenarios, meeting the tastes and needs of both private and public customers. The Italian swimming pool park welcomes projects of any type, varying from those characterized by an urban feel to the purest and most natural ones, to complex geometric shapes or minimal lines. wood, concrete, resin, etc. – combine harmoniously with each other to create high-quality pools with great aesthetic impact. The combination of what we see – irresistible attraction for a dip in the water – and what remains hidden from our eyes – the pulsing heart that keeps the pool clean and healthy – is the result of a meticulous balance between aesthetics and technique, a job that is becoming more and more sophisticated over time. Design and new technologies merge with each other to ensure refined aesthetics and hi-tech details: the Italian pool and spa Industry boasts beautiful water areas both comfortable and su-

per-equipped, enriched with accessories for relaxation and wellness, with special attention to water-saving and energy systems, and safety devices. What’s more, the management of the pool no longer weighs heavily on the owner. On the contrary, it’s simple and smart thanks to home automation, which, with a wide range of automated solutions, facilitates maintenance and ordinary “administration” of the pool. of a pool that’s more and more requested. A mountain lake or pebbled shore, a pool inspired by the countryside, that merges seamlessly with the outdoor area and the outdoor beauty. The Italian swimming pool market, in fact, is driven by trends of rediscovery and reinterpretation of nature, while maintaining all the comfort of these artificial reservoirs: the focus is not only on wellness, where the timeless hydromassage systems dominate in their most varied forms, but also on the scenic impact, with emotional LED pool lighting, counter-current swimming systems for physical fitness, and obviously on safety and energy-efficiency, which today necessarily require coverage. Increasingly appreciated are wide stairways, soft beaches, elegant steps, design elements, suggestive infinity edges, PVC and stone coverings, and modestly sized solarium areas. As we have 8

already said several times: made-in-Italy swimming pools are paying increasing attention to design and new technologies, but also to the environment and nature. GREEN, PLEASE Special keyword: eco-sustainability. This is the trend that, globally, marks the swimming pool industry, in a world where natural resources tend to decrease drastically, leading the water, not surprisingly nicknamed ‘blue gold’. In Italy, Piscine Oggi magazine and ForumPiscine - International Pool and Spa Expo & Congress some time ago presented the Self-sufficient Pool, a special project based on a perfectly functioning 1:1 scale installation of an eco-friendly, zero-impact swimming pool, which is the concrete demonstration of how technology, automation, sustain-

ability, self-sufficiency can – and must – coexist together in the aquatic system, a model that’s not only a construction methodology but a sum of technical devices and good practices united under an avant-garde concept that’s necessary for an age when fresh and clean water is becoming an increasingly rare commodity. So, sustainability and zero impact are two more and more important concepts for Italian designers. LIGHT MY POOL Multifaceted, multiform, sparkling, and pure as the very essence of beauty, light is one of the most versatile and exciting architectural forms that can be moulded, set up and changed: for this reason, designers love it and use it to give pools a truly unique touch. Therefore, carefully designing the light points could bring an outstanding imprint to a pool environment and the market, for this reason, offers endless possibilities, from coloured lanterns, able to create an imaginative and captivating atmosphere, to soft golden lights, more romantic, up to luminous sculptures, as in a small personal art gallery. Light has acquired the status of an architectural element and technologies connected to illumination are very popular. Especially when they ‘join forces’ with water: the swimming pool, in itself, is already an evocative element, but we can move it with waterfalls, gargoyles, and geysers, with the bonus of being able to enjoy the magnificent sound of the pouring water. 9

TRANSPARENCY GAMES Transparency: in two words, glass or acrylic. Inserting a transparent element in the walls or at the bottom of the pool, therefore, attributes a considerable architectural and functional value to the installation. Of undoubted scenographic qualities, glass is increasingly popular when it comes to swimming pools, in Italy and abroad. As a material, it guarantees an astonishing effect in every situation, it’s intriguing, sophisticated, and nowadays the market offers numerous opportunities in terms of “transparency games”, underwater windows and finishes. Although acrylic needs more careful and careful maintenance, its lower weight allows the creation of the most extreme shapes and innovative patterns, with the designer’s imagination as the only limit. Regardless of whether one chooses glass or acrylic, one should contact certified professionals: the slabs demand the right processing and the waterproofing at the joints must be seamless. To install the glass, when the pool is being built openings are provided in the cement structure with special stainless steel counter-frames. The slabs, therefore, are housed in the frame so that the profiles are

At this point, the glass appears as an extension of the pool lining and depending on the shade of the material, more or less transparent, or the play of light created with the help of LED spotlights, monochromatic or coloured, the effect is breathtaking. MINI-POOLS FOR GREAT WELLNESS Stress? Need to relax? No problem. Italians know well the therapeutic properties of hydrotherapy, already known in Roman times, which were great builders of spas that later became famous all over the world. The baths, in fact, at the time were places of wellness and sociality and this cultural heritage has not been lost over the centuries, and later on, it was also applied to the swimming pool industry. Today, more and more people are looking for a mini-pool, and the swim spas are equally appreciated: the ideal solution for those who want, not only a corner of wellness and relaxation but also a space in which to engage in recreational and sports activities. Mini-pools and swim spas represent the ideal solution to relieve stress at the end of the day and in

Italy, they are particularly appreciated for their small size, suitable for a relaxed, sophisticated and elegant location. The mini-pools have become little corners of well-being, where the body can enjoy the healing benefits of hydrotherapy even in the absence of adequate space to accommodate a larger pool. FUN & SAFETY The inclusion of slides, showers and devices that transform the swimming pool into a sort of personal water park is increasingly popular in the Italian sector. In public centres, the “adventure” dimension is very popular, often including rivers, torrents to be sailed up with rubber dinghies, more

or less daring slides, water blades and waterfalls, which transform a pool into a water park. The same trend, although on a smaller scale, has occurred in the residential swimming pool sector: more and more private individuals want to add a little exercise, for the health of the body and the enjoyment of the mind. Similarly, there are people who prefer to convert their swimming pool into a gymnasium, choosing elements that allow them to do sport in the water, from aquabikes to underwater treadmills, up to devices for swimming with a current. Finally, there is an increasing demand for waterfalls, spouts, geysers and hydromassage areas: apart from livening up the pool area, these elements are extremely useful allies for well-being and relaxation. Everything is done without sacrificing safety: more and more private pool owners and managers of public facilities decide to provide their pools with safety devices. Underwater alarms, in particular, are considered to be very effective in preventing accidental drowning, especially in combination with a barrier that keeps children from entering the water without supervision. While a cover is necessary to prevent accidental falls when the pool is not in use, wearable water wings are becoming increasingly popular, especially in order to protect younger swimmers. Safety outside the pool is also taken into account by installing anti-slip and anti-trauma floors, which are very useful for reducing the number of accidents linked to the presence of water on surfaces that become slippery. Finally, circulation pumps equipped with a safety device capable of disabling the pump’s suction capacity within a few seconds and immediately releasing a trapped body or object are becoming increasingly common. 13

In short, what will be staged from 14 to 16 February 2024 will be a new fair format that brings together in a single container ForumPiscine - International Pool & Spa

Expo and Congress, ForumClub - 25th International Congress & Expo for fitness, sport & wellness clubs and Outex - Outdoor & Leisure Experience, three integrated and complementary events that together will give life to a specialised maxi-event, which will extend inside two pavilions of the Bologna Fair, on the 25th and 26th, thus doubling the exhibition area, to which will be added the space of

the Quadriportico Centro Servizi, the heart of the Bologna Fairgrounds, which will act as an auditorium for the transversal Congress. Lots of novelties. Starting with ForumPiscine, the number one exhibition and congress event in Italy, which every year attracts and gathers, in the shadow of the mediaeval Two Towers, the entire swimming pool supply chain, generating a global convergence that also represents the privileged access channel to the Italian bathing water market. Only in Bologna, in fact, is it possible to meet at the same time managers of public facilities, builders, professionals, installers, buyers, distributors and entrepreneurs, many of whom come from the tourism and hospitality sector, from the spa and park sector, to which are now added sports centres, fitness and wellness clubs, and be part of an important moment of dialogue and comparison focused on the most important current issues - from environmental sustainability to energy saving, from the latest market trends to new regulations - to understand together how to transform every challenge into a profitable opportunity for growth. What awaits us in February, together with Outex and ForumClub, is a veritable wellness and leisure summit, with experiential installations, live shows on new technologies, an Expo with innovations from all over the globe, and a Congress focused on the most topical issues affecting the industry. Many novelties await visitors at this XXXL event. Here are a few highlights.

THE POOL IN THE LANDSCAPE EXPERIENTIAL ISLAND To paraphrase the iconic film ‘FightClub’, the first rule of this new extra-large event is to be there. To be there to meet, to make contacts, to network. To promote yourself before the market, to train, to receive useful advice from our congress panel of experts. Three days full of opportunities for the swimming pool industry, from builders to operators, from public to private facilities, both residential and commercial. Numerous special projects and prestigious partnerships with organisations and category associations will be presented in Bologna next February, starting with the initiative “The swimming pool in the landscape”. A “call to action” launched at a national level by AIAPP, the Italian Association of Landscape Architecture, and ForumPiscine, which turns the spotlight on a particularly important theme, that is, the inclusion of the swimming pool within a pre-existing landscape, with which it must – or should – interact in a harmonious manner. This is not a secondary issue in Italy, where the landscape is in many cases subject to con-

straints and protection, and where – depending on the territory – there may be limits, bans on building new facilities, precisely so as not to impose disturbance on an otherwise evocative and breathtaking landscape. A sensitivity that has grown a lot in recent years, certified, indirectly, also by a change – of no small importance – to our Constitution, in order to protect the environment and biodiversity. And it is also from this new national sensibility that the public initiative of AIAPP and ForumPiscine begins, to select, among the members of the Association, the designer who, individually or assisted by a team, will create a special installation in the pavilions of the XXXL event: “The swimming pool in the landscape”, in fact, will be one of the scenographic areas designed with the collaboration of associations, designers and companies, that will enrich the experience of the visiting operators, and the direct knowledge of the trends in the design of water, wellness and sports spaces, public and private, indoor and outdoor.

OUTDOOR WELLNESS EXPERIENTIAL ISLAND A second scenographic and cultural installation will play a leading role in the Expo. More details will be unveiled soon, but we can already tell you that the installation, called “Outdoor wellness”, will be dedicated to the declination of indoor and outdoor wellness spaces, with interesting novelties from the market, innovative products, and a focus on the subject in the context of the 2024 congress programme. ForumPiscine-Outex-ForumClub together with the prestigious and international architecture, interior design, engineering and product design atelier Studio Apostoli are planning an event that, in addition to the aforementioned exhibition part, will address – during stimulating round tables – the themes of water and energy sustainability, as well as safety in wellness centres.

LEISURE EXPERIENCE The explosion of the ‘outdoor’ phenomenon is a still growing process, which brings together several elements, from the increased attention to health and healthy lifestyles, the rediscovery of open spaces to take care of ourselves, to the renewed sensitivity, also on the part of local administrators, to shaping urban space to increase the quality of life of citizens and to consider physical activity and well-being as drivers of development. Not only public parks are involved in this, but also private facilities for public use, such as sports centres, wellness clubs, resorts, campsites, etc. This led to the creation of an experiential island dedicated to leisure and training in the exhibition hall, a functional space for outdoor training and play, for people of all ages and physical conditions.

ENERGY, EFFICIENCY, ECO-SUSTAINABILITY The environment is also at the centre of another awaited appointment that will take place within the XXXL event. In collaboration with FIRE - the Italian Federation for the Rational Use of Energy and CoNGePi - the National Confederation of Swimming Pool Managers, the ‘Energy and Water Consumption in Swimming Pools’ Observatory has been set up with the task, also through a survey and the analysis of case studies, of taking a census and outlining the state of the art of Italian swimming pools open to the public, monitoring their conditions, both from the point of view of en-

ergy and water consumption, and therefore identifying the dating of the systems, their typology, defining their water capacity and environmental impact, presenting the results at a dedicated conference during the triple event. An up-to-date and fundamental framework to allow the sector to better know itself and reason together with a view to growth and development, architectural, landscape, economic and technological. And, at the same time, evincing from concrete examples what are the best strategies and best practices to consume less, saving on bills.

EXPO, LIVE SHOW, CONGRESS The 2024 edition of the event, in its new XXXL format, will bring together the main players in the world of swimming pools, outdoor, fitness, wellness and sport in a single container, offering a dynamic and engaging exhibition. In this regard, the Live Shows are back, with a rich schedule of live technical demonstrations dedicated to operators (and not only). Plenty of space, therefore, for practical presentations of products and applications, as well as professional demonstrations and invaluable exchanges of know-how: directly between the Expo stands, in Halls 25 and 26, visitors will be able to attend a programme of live, how-to-do events, held by the exhibiting companies themselves with a dynamic and spectacular approach. Nor could the appointment with the top-level sessions offered by the conference programme be missed: at the centre of the agenda - along with the topics already highlighted - there will also be an update on the regulations governing water supply and treatment in the various types of swimming pools open to the public, from the presentation of UNI 10637 to the standard that will replace the Act of Agreement. And then safety and risk prevention in swimming pools, the latest and most interesting leisure trends – in combination with water and the outdoors – to understand what new scenarios are emerging for the market, both for the business of water parks and swimming pools in sporting contexts, and for wellness and hospitality facilities. All of this is also thanks to the prestigious operating partners that are working alongside the organisation.

ITALIAN POOL AWARD 2023 THE WINNERS The Italian Pool Award ceremony represents the perfect opportunity to put the excellence of Made in Italy design and construction on a pedestal, taking stock of the main trends in the sector.

orumPiscine, the Italian swimming pool show held last February in Bologna, welcomed the 39 pools competing for the 12th edition of the Italian Pool Award, showcasing - in the true sense of the word - their shapes, coverings, most interesting details and, of course, their inclusion in the surrounding environment, allowing the event's more than 6,000 visitors to enjoy this purely Made in Italy spectacle. The awards ceremony was the perfect opportunity to put on the pedestal the excellence of the designers and builders who, thanks to their work, maintain the high level of the Italian swimming pool and spa sector, undeniably appreciated all over the world. The recurring elements in the 39 nominees, from the most linear shapes to the softest ones, from linings made of natural materials to those with composite materials, from recirculations with suggestive infinity edges to those that are almost imperceptible - just to give a few examples -, have shown a sector that is yearning, yes, for beauty and aesthetic refinement, but also for sustainability, integration and respect, because this is the future we are travelling towards. The winners of the twelfth edition of the Italian Pool Award, elected thanks to the vote of the jury (which, in order to be as impartial as possible and as authoritative as possible, is made up each year of professionals and experts from the sector and beyond), received as recognition the famous bronze statuette depicting the pool lad-

der conceived by the creative mind of designer Osvaldo Casanova, forged each year by the ancient Fonderia Merighi Arte in Bologna. The prize-giving ceremony was attended by Federico A. MERLINO, YOUR PERSONAL SIDEKICK FOR SWIMMING POOL MANAGEMENT It is the electronic panel for home automation control of the pool, capable of managing all aspects of the pool: filtration, water treatment, heating, lighting via the dedicated APP. ITT’s ecodesign guidelines — performance, circularity and reduction — have given rise to FITT Revix, the first responsible hose for the pool industry.

PERFORMANCE FITT Revix is the flexible spiral hose made with patent-pending Coreshield technology: it features a layer that insulates and separates the regenerated material from the virgin material. This ensures suitable external abrasion resistance during installation as well as excellent hose adhesion to fittings during the gluing stage. Coreshield technology is supplemented with the patented D-Shape reinforcement spiral made from virgin material, which provides crush resistance. The innovative technologies used in the development of FITT Revix, combined with research into both recycled and virgin materials, ensure the first sustainable hose for swimming pools delivers high performance in terms of both mechanical strength and chemical resistance. →

CIRCULARITY FITT Revix is made using 30% recycled material, which results in a 10% reduction in CO2e emissions. The recycled material is the product of a significant collaboration between FITT and The RENOLIT Group, which is one of the world’s leading specialist for high-quality films, sheets and other products made of polymers and is constantly developing the know-how from more than 75 years of company history. The recycled material originates from industrial applications made for the decoration of window profiles manufactured and processed for reuse from RENOLIT: it is made up of graded chips chosen to ensure consistent granule size as well as extrusion stability and, consequently, a hose offering high performance. The partnership between FITT and RENOLIT is the epitome of circularity across company boundaries: a new way of working together to find more environmentally friendly solutions. →

REDUCTION FITT estimates its use of LDPE for the primary packaging of similar products to be in the order of 200 tonnes, which equates to 400 tonnes of CO2e. This is why FITT Revix reduces single-use plastic primary packaging to a minimum. The protection of the rolls is still guaranteed by the film wrapping the complete pallet, preserving them during handling and warehouse storage. The advantages of reducing primary packaging are threefold: speed of disposing of material on site, ease of installation, and a decrease in microplastics. OFFSETTING After reducing FITT Revix’s environmental impact, FITT has opted to offset the remaining CO2e emissions from

its production cycle by purchasing carbon credits from the Water is Life project. The mission of Water is Life is to bring drinking water to families living in the villages of Anketrake, Andranogadra and Ankatsaky, in Madagascar. Even today, in some areas of the island 80% of the population has no direct access to drinking water and is forced to make long daily journeys to reach water sources in semi-desert areas. FITT designs and manufactures pipes and hoses for transporting fluids, the main one being water. It therefore chose to support the Water is Life project, in order to ensure access to such a vital resource also in areas where it is not easy.

FITT designed FITT Revix, the

first responsible hose for the pool industry. FITT Revix is the flexible spiral hose made with patent-pending Coreshield technology: it features a layer that insulates and separates the regenerated material from the virgin material. This ensures suitable external abrasion resistance during installation as well as excellent hose adhesion to fittings during the gluing stage. Coreshield technology is supplemented with the patented D-Shape reinforcement spiral made from virgin material, which provides crush resistance.

CEMI’s prefilter is

made of HDPE (high density polyethylene) with flanged inlet and outlet connections, quick opening plexiglass lid and a removable stainless steel basket. Situated at the front of the delivery with respect to the pump, the basket retains the largest impurities and its removal simplifies management. JANUS ENERGY designed Sunnyday ‘On the rocks’, the solar panel with a special flattened shape of the channels (5.5 mm wide) that allows them to absorb the expansion due to frozen water without breaking. Sunnyday is built with a particularly robust copolymer polypropylene mix, compatible with food uses and resistant to aggressive chemicals. These features allow water to be directly heated inside the panel, whether it is sanitary water or a swimming pool water, with considerable benefits in terms of simplicity, cost and efficiency of the system.

Dolphin and Mini Dolphin, the new line of linear pool spotlights with a minimalist design. They stand out first of all for their NO Air system, characterised by electronics that are completely immersed in resin to guarantee the total impermeability of the product. Plug-in connections use watertight IP 68 connectors, making installation fast and safe, while the customised cable is made to suit project requirements. The optics of all luminaires avoid light leakage and utilise 100 % of the light intensity produced, drastically reducing consumption.

CUOGHI designs and builds various types of dehumidi-

fiers, including the SP (for the installation in the environment) and SPW (for the installation in the machine room adjacent to the area to be dehumidified). The electronic control uses a sophisticated humidity and temperature probe and can be easily mounted externally to the machine in the best position for the user. The functionalities of the appliance are completed by optional heating accessories, such as the electric resistor or the hot water battery. SP/SPW series are updated to the new low GWP gases, as per most recent EU legislation.

SILIGROUP is committed

to combining high technology with user-friendliness, safety, energy-saving and environmental criteria. cessories in ABS, designed by the technical department of the company and in line with the current safety regulations (UNI EN 13451-3). The accessories, produced in Italy through molding, are available in different colors to adapt to any swimming pool and any aesthetic request.

GERIT produces a wide range of ac-

cessories, including micro inlet nozzles for installation in reinforced concrete swimming pools. The microinjector can be installed on inclined planes, recover errors made during the casting phase and fill the gap of the different coating thicknesses. It is sufficient to provide the outlet of a Ø 32 PN 16 PVC pipe near each inlet. Once the construction and tiling work is finished, the PVC pipe will be cut flush with the floor and the micro-inlet with its nose cone will be glued directly inside the PVC pipe, adapting it to the slope and work imperfections of the finish.
