The European Congress of Leather Chemists organised by Italian AICC in Vicenza has achieved all the objectives both on a social, science and technology level

An important result that has achieved all the objectives. The third edition of the IULTCS EuroCongress, which took place in Vicenza from 18 to 20 September with the skilful direction of the Italian Association of Leather Chemists (AICC), brought together more than 520 delegates from 21 also non-EU countries like Turkey, India, Colombia, United States, Mexico and even New Zealand. “Rinascimento: The Next Leather Generation” is the happy title chosen for an event that set itself the goal of outlining the future of the sector, contributing to its relaunch after the pandemic crisis. The sustainable innovation of the tanning process is at the centre of the debate, an opportunity for a real discussion on the leather value as an example of circular economy. Through 26 oral presentations and 27 posters at the Vicenza Congress Centre, the latest science and technology advances in the sector were presented, articulated between four macro themes: increasingly green and performing chemical products, technological innovation, new and more accurate methods of analysis for leather to detect the presence of unwanted components, circular economy for the reduction of waste and the enhancement of by-products. In particular, much has been said about how to reduce the bisphenol content in leathers, the development of bio-based chemical products, biodegradable leathers, and the enhancement of processing waste. A 23-member Scientific Commission chaired by Franca Nuti sifted through the works presented at the Congress.

ganise the event and for the companies that made it possible: “I want to say thank you very much to all our sponsors, whose response was better than expected but which clearly represents a demonstration of trust in us as well as a recognition of the work done so far”.

Great appreciation also came from Luis Zugno, secretary and past president of IULTCS: “It was the best tanning chemical congress that has ever been organised both in terms of content and participation and I perhaps am the one who has seen more congresses than anyone in this sector from 1983 onwards”. Zugno also expressed words of encouragement for Italy: “Italian tanning districts represent an incredible force which, combined with the creativity of entrepreneurs, give this country something extra to overcome future challenges”. IULTCS President Jean-Pierre Gualino spoke about the importance of participating in these events: “These congresses provide excellent opportunities for knowledge transfer, innovation and education in our industry. Actively supporting the tanning industry to use science and technology to produce accurate, reliable and verifiable data, will enable the leather producing community to continue to thrive and to promote a positive image to consumers”.

The third EuroCongress was also made unforgettable by Vicenza, a wonderful city rich in historical and artistic treasures, located a stone’s throw from Arzignano, the heart of the Venetian tanning district. The locations chosen for social events are magnificent,

such as the Palladio Olympic Theater which hosted the opening ceremony and the Bevilacqua Castle, a priceless setting for the gala dinner.

As for the future, already scheduled are the next international appointments with leather chemistry research: the XXXVII IULTCS Congress will be held in China, in Chengdu, in October 2023, while in 2025 it will be the turn of France, which has set its sights on the city of Lyon to host the 38th International Congress of Leather Chemists Associations Union.

PIENO SUCCESSO PER IL III EUROCONGRESS IULTCS

Il Congresso europeo dei Chimici del Cuoio organizzato da AICC a Vicenza ha centrato tutti gli obiettivi sia sul piano sociale che tecnico-scientifico

Un risultato importante che ha centrato tutti gli obiettivi. Il terzo EuroCongress IULTCS che si è svolto a Vicenza dal 18 al 20 settembre con la sapiente regia dell’Associazione Italiana Chimici del Cuoio (AICC) ha riunito più di 520 delegati da 21 Paesi non solo europei con presenze da Turchia, India, Colombia, Stati Uniti, Messico e persino Nuova Zelanda. “Rinascimento: The Next Leather Generation” il felice titolo scelto per un evento che si è dato l’obiettivo di delineare il futuro del settore e contribuire al suo rilancio dopo la crisi pandemica. Al centro del dibattito l’innovazione sostenibile del processo conciario, un’occasione per un reale confronto sul valore della pelle come esempio di economia circolare. Attraverso 26 presentazioni orali e 27 poster al Centro Congressi di Vicenza sono stati presentati gli ultimi progressi tecnico-scientifici del settore articolati fra quattro macro temi: prodotti chimici sempre più green e performanti, innovazione tecnologica, nuove e più accurate metodologie di analisi delle pelli per rilevare la presenza di componenti indesiderati, economia circolare per la riduzione degli scarti e valorizzazione dei sottoprodotti. In particolare si è parlato molto di come ridurre il contenuto di bisfenoli nei pellami, dello sviluppo di prodotti chimici bio-based, di pellami biodegradabili, di valorizzazione degli scarti di lavorazione. A vagliare i lavori presentati al Congresso una Commissione Scientifica di 23 membri presieduta da Franca Nuti.

Giustamente soddisfatto dei risultati il presidente dell’EuroCongress, Giancarlo Lovato, a capo di una macchina organizzativa composta da 60 volontari che ha lavorato due anni per allestire un evento di alto livello: “Ci eravamo dati l’obiettivo di 400 partecipanti: ne sono arrivati 520, tra cui un centinaio di conciatori e tecnici conciari, un numero decisamente superiore alle nostre migliori aspettative. Mi risulta che anche il livello dei lavori presentati sia stato giudicato molto buono e mi auguro che questo Congresso abbia contribuito a far capire come la ricerca possa giocare un ruolo cruciale nell’affrontare le sfide che il futuro ci porterà”.

Da Roberto Mariano Mecenero, presidente uscente di AICC, grandi apprezzamenti per tutti i colleghi che hanno contribuito a organizzare l’evento e per le aziende che lo hanno reso possibile: “Tengo a ringraziare moltissimo tutti gli sponsor, dai quali abbiamo avuto una risposta superiore alle aspettative ma che evidentemente rappresenta una dimostrazione di fiducia nei nostri confronti oltre che un riconoscimento del lavoro fatto fin qui”.

Un importante riconoscimento è venuto anche dal segretario nonché past president IULTCS, Luis Zugno: “E’ stato il miglior Congresso chimico conciario che sia mai stato organizzato sia dal punto di vista dei contenuti che della partecipazione e io forse sono quello che ne ha visti di più in questo settore, dal 1983 in poi”. Da parte di Zugno anche parole di incoraggiamento per l’Italia: “I distretti conciari italiani rappresentano una forza incredibile che unita alla creatività degli imprenditori danno a questo Paese una marcia in più per vincere le sfide future”.

Dell’importanza di partecipare attivamente a questi eventi ha parlato il presidente IULTCS Jean-Pierre Gualino: “Questi congressi offrono eccellenti opportunità per il trasferimento di conoscenze, l'innovazione e l'educazione nel nostro settore. Supportare attivamente l'industria conciaria affinché utilizzi la scienza e la tecnologia per produrre dati accurati, affidabili e verificabili consentirà alla comunità dei produttori di pelle di continuare a prosperare e promuovere un'immagine positiva presso i consumatori”.

A rendere indimenticabile il terzo EuroCongress è stata anche Vicenza, meravigliosa città ricca di tesori storici e artistici, situata a due passi da Arzignano, cuore del distretto conciario veneto. Magnifiche le location scelte per gli eventi sociali come il Teatro Olimpico del Palladio che ha ospitato la cerimonia di apertura e il Castello Bevilacqua, impagabile cornice della cena di gala.

Quanto al futuro, già programmati i prossimi appuntamenti internazionali con la ricerca chimico conciaria: il XXXVII IULTCS Congress si terrà in Cina, a Chengdu, nell’ottobre 2023, mentre nel 2025 sarà la volta della Francia che ha puntato sulla città di Lione per ospitare il 38esimo Congresso internazionale dell’Unione delle associazioni dei chimici del cuoio.

The speeches of Poltrona Frau and Kering Group

The “guest speeches” of the EuroCongress of Vicenza were of absolute importance: Daniele Gardini, R&D Leather Manager of Poltrona Frau and Chiara Morelli, Head of Sustainable Operations of the Kering Group. Both focused their interventions on the commitment made by their respective brands on the road to sustainability. For Poltrona Frau, leather has always been the material of choice. Gardini spoke in particular about the brand-new “Impact Less” project, which inaugurates a path that will see the gradual introduction of the chrome-free tanning process and technologies to reduce environmental impact for all leather named Pelle Frau. “By 2030 - Gardini said - we are committed to all supply being Impact Less”. Specifically this means: traceable and certified sourcing; elimination of chromium in the tanning process; offsetting CO2 emissions. Chiara Morelli of Kering Group (to which brands such as Gucci, Saint Laurent, Bottega Veneta, and many others belong) also emphasized that leather is the most widely used material for the group’s brands and reiterated the importance of increasingly close collaboration between brands and tanneries in order to tackle tough challenges such as complete traceability of materials and the achievement of increasingly significant environmental performance that goes through the use of renewable energy and reduced consumption of water and chemicals. Increasingly significant -Morelli said - is the use of metal-free leathers by the group’s brands, which in 2022 accounted for half of the leathers used.

Gli interventi di Poltrona Frau e Kering Group

Di assoluto rilievo i “guest speeches” dell’EuroCongress di Vicenza: Daniele Gardini, R&D Leather Manager di Poltrona Frau e Chiara Morelli, Head of Sustainable Operations di Kering Group. Entrambi hanno focalizzato i propri interventi sull’impegno assunto dai rispettivi brand sulla strada della sostenibilità. Per Poltrona Frau la pelle è da sempre il materiale d’elezione. Gardini ha parlato in particolare del nuovissimo progetto “Impact Less” che inaugura un percorso che vedrà progressivamente l’introduzione del processo di concia senza cromo e delle tecnologie per la riduzione dell’impatto ambientale per tutte le pelli denominate Pelle Frau. “Entro il 2030 – ha detto Gardini - ci impegniamo affinché tutta l’offerta sia Impact Less. Nello specifico questo significa: approvvigionamento tracciabile e certificato; eliminazione del cromo nel processo di concia; compensazione delle emissioni di CO2. Anche Chiara Morelli, di Gruppo Kering (cui fanno capo marchi come Gucci, Saint Laurent, Bottega Veneta, e molti altri) ha sottolineato come la pelle sia il materiale più utilizzato per i brand del gruppo e ribadito l’importanza di una collaborazione sempre più stretta tra i brand e le concerie per affrontare sfide impegnative come la completa tracciabilità dei materiali e il raggiungimento di performance ambientali sempre più significative che passano attraverso l’impiego di energia rinnovabile e la riduzione dei consumi di acqua e prodotti chimici. Sempre più significativo – ha detto Morelli - è l’utilizzo di pelli metal free da parte dei brand del gruppo che nel 2022 hanno rappresentato la metà delle pelli impiegate.
