No such thing as too much information
We are more complex
A
few years ago, your American-International Charolais Association board of directors approved a communication program designed to share a wide range of relevant information across all geographic sectors. The AICA “Listening & Learning” Industry Sessions accomplish exactly that. The objective is clearly stated: To illustrate the added value of utilizing Charolais genetics through the various phases of the beef cattle industry, while developing more marketing options for producers utilizing Charolais genetics. There may have been a time in beef cattle history where the producer was considered to be “on a need to know basis.” Today, that statement is as obsolete as a No. 2 pencil! Every segment of food animal production has become more complex and relies on copious amounts of data. Historically, seedstock producers had
any, in the beef industry better equipped to explain the importance and practical application of genomic information in modern beef production. Segment 2: Ultrasound Technology for the Beef Industry is a topic that focuses on another important tool being implemented across many production sectors today. Mark Henry, president of Centralized Ultrasound Processing (CUP), will discuss the value of ultrasound in combination with genomic and phenotypic data to improve the predictable outcomes across industry sectors. Segment 3: The Charolais Bull at Work will look at production snapshots from two progressive commercial cow-calf producers. Jim Hacker, Bolivar, Missouri and Max Martin, Loving, Texas, represent two very different production environments, yet both are striving for the same goals of profitability, predictability and sustainability.
The objective is clearly stated: To illustrate the added value of utilizing Charolais genetics through the various phases of the beef cattle industry, while developing more marketing options for producers utilizing Charolais genetics. access to information that commercial cow-calf producers didn’t. Feedyards had data that wasn’t shared with customers. Packers shared with no one. In fact, very little transparency was happening up and down the supply chain. Value-based marketing slowly began to change the information equation. It became apparent that only by sharing information, technology and tools, stakeholders throughout the entire system had a chance to get better. Today, registered and commercial producers simply can’t absorb enough information. The L&L 2020 will be held at Joplin Regional Stockyards near Joplin, Missouri. JRS is one of the largest marketing facilities for cows and calves in the U.S., with a weekly capacity of 10,000 head. More than 70 field representatives work with beef producers to maximize the opportunity to add value to their product. JRS was one of the first auction facilities to embrace the concept of adding value by better health and vaccination practices. Today, the facility encourages their customers to include best practice management and enroll in the JRS Value-Added Programs as a routine component of their marketing plans. This year’s L&L will be held Thursday afternoon, August 27, 2020. Attendees can register at 2:30 p.m. Welcoming remarks will begin at 3:30 p.m. by Mark Harmon, JRS; Mike Schumacher, AICA president; and Rex Ricketts, AICA breed improvement committee chair. The remainder of the afternoon will feature five segments, chock-full of timely, relevant information followed by a social and dinner at 6:30 p.m. A brief synopsis of the afternoon includes: Segment 1: “Cowboy Arithmetic” is an ideal description for Bill Bowman’s, Method Genetics, LLC discussion. There are few, if
Segment 4: Adding Value with Charolais Genetics will be a panel discussion featuring Jackie Moore, JRS owner; Ken Danzer, Danzer Cattle Co., Manhattan, Kansas; and Colt Keffer, AICA director of industry relations and sales. As the owner of one of the largest auction facilities in the U.S., Moore has seen it all, from the worst to the best of beef cattle. Danzer is an order buyer that also works with his customers to improve the quality of the feeder cattle he’s asked to bid on each year. Through his role at AICA, Keffer assists beef producers using Charolais genetics to add value to their outputs. These three panelists represent industry diversity and will quantify the value of Charolais throughout the supply chain. Segment 5: Understanding Who the Consumer Is, a discussion Dr. Gretchen Mafi, Oklahoma State University, has every single day. Gretchen was a participant in the first Listening & Learning Session, and we are fortunate to have her return. Dr. Mafi is a professor of meat science and instrumental in the research and development of new fabrication techniques that lead to better utilization of affordable, high quality beef products. We are very grateful to our sponsors for the 2020 Listening & Learning Sessions: the Missouri Charolais Association, Neogen and ImmuCell and our gracious host, Joplin Regional Stockyards. We hope you can join us Thursday, August 27, at the Joplin Regional Stockyards, for an afternoon packed with information presented by engaged stakeholders that also recognize the value of Charolais to quality beef production. For more information, contact David Hobbs (816) 464-5977 ext. 200, dhobbs@charolaisusa.com or Rachel Booth (816) 4645977 ext. 102, rbooth@charolaisusa.com.

AI Sires used “out of herd” and all Donor Dams must be DNA tested before calves can be registered. AICA recommends collecting DNA samples during the donor’s initial flush. Check the animal’s record to make sure the DNA work has been done before submitting registration papers. DNA kits are specific to the animal being tested. Contact Marilou Wegner to request a kit. AICA rules require signatures on bulls and dams you do not own. Signatures can be submitted online, fax, mail or e-mail.

2019-2020 AICA Board President Mike Schumacher shares his experiences in the Charolais breed. By Rachel Booth
What motivated you to run What have you enjoyed the for the board? most about your time on I was motivated to run for the board the board? after friend, Bill Nottke, of Riverdale Land & Livestock, invited me to attend a board meeting. Being new at my very first meeting, I was able to meet a lot of people within the breed. Although I was new to the Board meeting scene, everyone was welcoming to me as a newcomer. I was later asked to serve on a committee and one thing led to another on serving on the Board and later having the opportunity to serve as Board president.
How did you get involved in the Charolais breed?
I grew up in the hog business. I was very involved in 4-H and FFA, attending national shows and conferences on the pig side. I was first introduced to the Charolais breed as a freshman in high school. My ag teacher had taken us on a trip and our first stop was at Litton Charolais Ranch. I can remember seeing Sam 951 for the first time. He was a tremendous animal and quickly got my attention. Since then I was always impressed with the added pounds Charolais Bulls offered to a cowherd. 20 J U N E/J U L Y 2 0 2 0
The people. It’s the people that make the business, the Charolais cattle just happen to be our common denominator between us all. I have enjoyed building relationships and friendships that will last a lifetime.
What advice would you give younger members?
Buy the best cow you can for the money you have. Don’t worry about numbers of livestock, worry about quality of livestock. Good cows make a program. The goal of everyone is to sell a high dollar bull, but if you don’t have a good cow you can’t make a good bull. I also encourage younger members to get involved in the Charolais breed, whether that be on the state or national level. Don’t be intimidated as participating is a great way to meet people and learn.
What do think makes the Charolais breed unique?
I think the Charolais breed is unique because of the added growth we have to offer. We are well CHAROLAIS JOURNAL
known for our power and growth. Our color pattern is a very big asset we have in the cattle industry as we are able to identify who we are.
What are you excited for about your next year as president?
I am excited to see the future of the breed. This next year I hope to encourage younger Charolais breeders to be more involved. We need to keep growing and moving forward.
How is the association financially?
We are looking solid with the conservative approach the board has taken. We are moving forward and looking into new innovative ways to operate.
How has AICA reacted through the Covid-19 pandemic?
Our staff has been number one. The staff has held up the association and been exceptional through these uncharted waters.

Tragedy Strikes Out of the Blue: Livestock Losses to
LIGHTNING By: Heather Smith Thomas
CHAROLAIS JOURNAL
lan and Leslie Alexander (Hang’n A Cattle Company, near Pasco, Washington) lost 6 registered Charolais cattle during a lightning storm on May 23, 2020. The cattle were on rented pasture about 15 miles away from their own place. “We got a phone call at 6 a.m. that Saturday morning from the gentleman we rent pasture from. He was very excited and upset, and said they’d had a big thunderstorm. We had 10 cows in that pasture and he thought they were all dead,” said Leslie. “We piled into our truck and headed down there, and my husband and I were trying to play the ‘it could be worse’ game, trying to prepare ourselves for the worst case scenario. We were saying it could have been worse if our prize herd bull had been out there with them, or it could have been worse if they’d got out on the highway and hit by a car and killed a bunch of people. We were trying to mentally prepare ourselves.” When Leslie and Alan arrived, the pasture owner told them that of the 10 cows originally hit, 6 were obviously dead. Three had gotten up and walked away and didn’t seem to be hurt. There was one, however, that had her feet uphill and was bleeding from the nose and mouth. “He was able to roll her over and get her on her feet, and she survived, but we don’t know what will happen with her pregnancy,” Leslie says. The 6 dead animals were under a big tree. “Four were home grown heifers, but the other two were a bigger financial loss. One was a donor cow we bought in Michigan last summer and the other was a bred heifer we bought.” The next concern was disposal. “Luckily the gentleman we rent pasture from knew someone who has a dump trailer so we didn’t have to just dig a big hole to bury them. We were able to load and haul them to a dairy across the highway and put them in their dead pile to be hauled off,” she says. “We got in touch with the FSA after several people told us there is an indemnity program to pay for livestock disasters. We’ve started the process of applying for this reimbursement, talking with the gal in the Franklin County office, filling out paperwork for that,” says Leslie. ucked back in the rolling hills of Virginia, surrounded by the Blue Ridge Mountains you will find Rockin’ K Cattle Company owned by 6th generation cattle producer Kaitlin Smith. Kaitlin started Rockin’ K Cattle Company in Lexington, Virginia, from the purchase of her first Charolais show heifer in 2005. Since then, she has put in the hard work and education necessary to build and promote her very own purebred Charolais program. Although a purebred Charolais operation was new to Kaitlin, she was no stranger to the cattle industry. Since she could remember Kaitlin’s life has always revolved around agriculture and specifically the cow-calf sector. Her family has always been involved in the cattle business, but it wasn’t until her granddaddy began using Charolais bulls on his commercial cow herd when she truly became intrigued by the breed. “My granddaddy loved to farm and had a love for cattle that he

thankfully instilled in all of his family,” Kaitlin said. “I don’t think any of us would be where we are today without his influence on our families lives.” Kaitlin recalled from a young age going to the order buyer each year with her granddaddy to sell their calves. Her granddaddy would stand next to the scales, admiring each calf one last time before they were sorted off into their pens. Kaitlin said, the buyer would always compliment him on how each group of calves was better than the last and questioned what he had done differently, her Granddaddy would chuckle humbly and say, “It was the bull, I just had a good bull.” After watching her granddaddy utilize Charolais genetics in his cow herd, Smith fell in love with the breed and knew she wanted to raise purebred Charolais cattle of her own one day. Not only was her granddaddy her influence in getting started in the Charolais breed, but he was CHAROLAIS JOURNAL

also her first bull customer. “I’ll never forget when I told him the price, he said his favorite phrase “oh good gosh”,” Kaitlin said. “Granddaddy was perfect practice selling bulls to as he taught me how to deal with his haggling and how to stand my ground in keeping a firm price. After a bit of persuasion and sweet talking, he eventually bought the bull.” When Smith purchased her first Charolais heifer back in 2005 from Theresa Key of Lone Oak Farm, she knew about the breed, but was eager to learn more about the different Charolais pedigrees. “Theresa was great about sitting down and explaining the different pedigrees with in the Charolais breed,” Smith said. “During weekends or when I wasn’t in school during the summer, you could find me at Theresa’s learning about pedigrees.”
30 J U N E/J U L Y 2 0 2 0
Theresa collected past Charolais Journals dating all the way back to the 80’s and her and Smith would look through them studying different sires within the breed. “We would look through Journals and pedigrees, she would take me out to the pasture and see those pedigrees at work, learning how to pick my sires with a balance of genotype and phenotype,” Smith said. “I credit my knowledge of the breed to Theresa and I can’t thank her enough for taking the time to teach me the ropes.” Since that very first show heifer Rockin’ K Cattle Company has grown into a registered Charolais seedstock operation complemented by a small commercial cow herd to keep some diversity on the farm. “All my commercial mommas are mostly sired by my AI sires and hand selected to be replacements based on their maternal traits,” Kaitlin said.
CHAROLAIS JOURNAL
The main goal for her commercial cowherd is to eventually utilize them as recips in her embryo transfer program. “I have a strong base of foundation females that all go back to Wyoming Wind,” Kaitlin said. “I find value in keeping a breeding program that supports my foundation females.” Kaitlin is not only the one making the breeding decision for her herd, but she also is in charge of the day to day chores of taking care of the herd along side the help of her father. Her and her father work together as a team to get things done with the cattle as well as mange the family’s turkey houses. In 1993 they diversified their cattle business by adding raising turkeys to their list of expertise. With the fluctuations of the cattle
market, the turkeys are a way to add a consistent income, Kaitlin said. The Smith’s turkey facility is set up to start birds the day they hatch, and grow them out to being finished, growing toms for the Virginia Poultry Growers Cooperative. The Smith family raises three flocks of 12,000 birds a year, keeping their houses full year-round. “It is rewarding to watch the turkeys grow and mature so quickly over such a short amount of time,” Kaitlin said. “We keep records on each flock and we are always striving to work harder to get the current flock to outperform the last one.” Besides the day to day work at home, Kaitlin also attends many local and national livestock shows across the country exhibiting her Charolais genetics. Growing up Kaitlin always
enjoyed showing on the local and state level, but always aspired to attend national shows. When Kaitlin was younger her dad said, once she you’re enough to drive and able to buy a truck and trailer, you can go anywhere you want. “I always enjoyed the American Royal and have always found something special about the American Royal,” Kaitlin said. When Kaitlin was in 4-H her livestock judging team won the state contest and earned a trip to the American Royal. After going through the contest, her and her team time had time to sit back and enjoy the show. “As a 15-year-old, the red white and blue American Royal banners hanging from the ceiling with the green shaving covering the arena was something I will never forget, it was in that moment I knew I wanted to someday show at the
CHAROLAIS JOURNAL
American Royal,” Kaitlin said. Ten years later that dream came true for Kaitlin as she traveled across the country with the Rockin’ K Cattle Company show string to the American Royal. It was instilled early on in Kaitlin’s life, as a woman in agriculture she could do whatever she worked hard at and set her mind to. The work ethic she was taught from an early age has helped shape her into being the woman in the cattle industry she is today. Kaitlin’s drive and dedication to her cattle does not go unnoticed as she has success attending cattle shows across the country, while taking care of her family farm back home. “I love what I do,” Kaitlin said. “If you love something, don’t let anything or anyone hold you back, get out there and do it.”

H
owdy y’all! My name is Molly Smith and I am currently serving as yall’s AIJCA Vice-President. I am the daughter of Doris and Roger Smith. I am originally from Lockhart, Texas but am currently attending Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas where I am majoring in Animal Science. I have known for years that my future will be in agriculture. My introduction to agriculture came from my father, who taught me, at a young age, that land and animals were valuable resources that should be cultivated to enhance our livelihood. Since then, I have taken advantage of opportunities that provided me with the tools to create the future that I see for myself. I have made an effort to immerse myself into all things agricultural so that I can achieve my dream of obtaining a Ph.D. in Animal Physiology.
Island, Nebraska and we were all exhausted from a week full of hard work and sweat. Walking into a room full of 12 individuals that comprised the junior board was intimidating; I can remember standing there hardly able to breathe because of how nervous I was. I am sure they could all visibly see how nervous I was but looking back on it now I can understand how they all must have gone through this same process and made it through it in one piece. The people involved with the Charolais breed are truly special. Members have not only helped me improve my knowledge of the Charolais industry but also to become a better person. Being a member of the board has challenged me to try new things. You cannot grow and improve yourself if you just “go with the flow” and watching as other people pass you by. “ You cannot grow and improve yourself if you just ‘go with the flow’ and watch as other people pass you by. Improvement comes as you work toward your greatest potential.. ” I began showing Charolais cattle very early on and transitioned into Brahman cattle and multiple other breeds. I have found a deep love for the breed and everyone in it. If you have spoken to me you would have found out that I am superbly busy, but I still find time in my day to feed, wash, and halter break calves at any opportunity. Any day and every day I can talk about my cattle and how they have impacted me to become a better person. They have taught me responsibility, humility, and given me character. I am truly thankful for the experiences I have had and the friendships I’ve made along the way. I remember when I was a new member, I was scared and intimidated by all the older members and the junior board. What I soon found out is that the junior board is there to help you with anything and everything! I never thought I would
greatest potential and get involved. The effort, money, and time that we put into this industry is inconceivable but
at the end of the day we should be thankful that what we do is backed by many supporters that we meet along the way. Our character is what defines us and helps us prepare for our futures. Sometimes I wonder what it would be like if I had not gotten so actively involved with the AIJCA and the Junior Board. Being a part of the AIJCA has opened up multiple doors and opportunities. You will meet people that you will never forget and learn things that cannot be taught on the inside of a classroom. The cattle industry is full of amazing opportunities that are available through livestock associations and the things we do today can grow up to wear that prestigious blue blazer or even help you in the future. Our association is fortunate become an officer. I remember my very first interview to have remarkable adults that help cultivate our to be able to be a board candidate. We were in Grand generation to become the future leaders of tomorrow. 32 J U N E/J U L Y 2 0 2 0

B/B CATTLE BRADLEY
Dear Charolais Breeders & Commerical Cattlemen, Talk about a year so far! With all the unknowns thrown at us this spring from the nationwide shut down from COVID, to the drop in live cattle prices, to the drastic price increase in boxed beef from the processing shortage, and our Charolais sales being canceled or postponed, etc…, it would be hard to have a positive attitude about the cattle business. However, there is a light at the end of the tunnel! This past spring, Charolais sales were very strong, despite the down market. Clearly, our product remains in demand for not only seedstock producers, but where our target market is most valued: the commercial industry, where more pounds = more money. With many of the top bull and female sales in the country, Missouri Charolais breeders are in a great position to come out of this market on a positive note. Currently, nationwide, Missouri is #2 for active members, #3 for junior members, and #5 for enrolled females. With this much success in our state, the excitement is building for another successful year marketing Charolais genetics throughout Missouri, as well as the national level. A quick glance through our Breeder Directory shows a dedicated group of breeders committed to marketing the best Charolais genetics you can find anywhere. Looking to the future, we are excited to visit with you at several upcoming events where Missouri’s display of Charolais genetics is second to none. The Missouri State Fair is the largest state fair for both open and junior Charolais shows. If you missed your chance to purchase a brick for the new Litton Memorial Legacy Wall, please contact us to add your family’s legacy on the wall. Be sure to check out the Legacy Wall and the numerous improvements made at the Charolais Barn when you’re at the fair! Another exciting event coming to Missouri this fall is the AICA “Listening & Learning” Industry Session at the Joplin Regional Stockyards, Thursday, August 27. This will be an exciting event with many opportunities for cattlemen to experience the benefits of Charolais genetics, as well as take home some great door prizes. We look forward to seeing you there! This fall at the American Royal, please plan to participate in and attend the Royal Breeders Bull Classic, as well as the Royal Collection sale. The Breeders Bull Classic received a face lift this year (i.e. membership reduced to $250, etc.), so please look over the new rules and come participate in this highly anticipated event! If you are interested in consigning to the sale, please contact JWC Marketing. As always, there are plenty of opportunities to acquire Charolais genetics with over 15 bull and female sales coming up, as well as several online sales. Our breeders would love to discuss their programs with you at these events, so feel free to come and participate in these events. Feel free to contact any board member or breeder if you have questions on upcoming activities and how you can be involved. Sincerely, Jeannine Doughty MCBA President

Fly Control
for Beef Cattle By Heather Smith Thomas
T
he battle against flies is constant during warm weather, but there are several ways to reduce these pests. Different flies have different habits and behavior, so a combination of tactics is most effective. Stable flies breed in rotting organic matter such as old hay and bedding. Horn flies breed in fresh cattle manure. Horseflies/deerflies breed in swampy areas, and black flies breed in flowing water--often many miles away—so it’s impossible to control them at their breeding sites. Roger Moon, PhD, Professor Emeritus, Entomology, University of Minnesota (St. Paul), the stable fly is becoming a bigger problem. In spring, this fly mainly develops in feed debris and soiled bedding from winter. Breeding sites include wasted hay mixed with manure around big bale feeders, piles of bedding pushed out of drylots, etc. 70 J U N E/J U L Y 2 0 2 0
“If it’s deeper than an inch and/ or there’s enough moisture, these accumulations can be a breeding area for stable flies clear into August. We’ve tracked them that far through summer,” says Moon. “If you are using round bale feeders, or unrolling big bales, it’s best to keep moving the feeding area, so any wasted hay does not accumulate in one spot. The old feed debris gets contaminated with manure, and if it gets enough depth it creates a wet area —even in dry years—that stays moist and attracts flies,” he says. The debris builds up over winter and in the spring serves as a big breeding place for the flies. “If you can keep those piles from developing in the first place, you reduce the urgency to clean up the debris in the spring. If it’s not practical to change feeding areas regularly, then your next best plan is CHAROLAIS JOURNAL
to make sure the debris is disposed of. It can be disked or hauled and spread on pasture or open crop ground. Most folks around here who are feeding cattle during winter are also growing crops. Spreading thinly works to prevent fly breeding, but if you just scoop it up and dump it somewhere, you’ve just moved the problem somewhere else,” he says. Composting this material works well for killing fly larvae (with heat from the composting process) and for breaking down organic matter to create good fertilizer. “We want it to get hot, because it not only kills the parasites and maggots, but hot composting rapidly converts the material that feeds the bacteria (that the maggots are feeding on) into something they can’t feed on. If you collect the material fresh, it’s not attractive to flies until it starts to break down. But if you speed
If you have a less extensive operation where you see the cattle more often, it pays to monitor them more closely, observe their behavior, and do some fly counts. that breakdown process with proper composting (turning and aerating it periodically), the material is converted into something the maggots can’t develop in,” he explains. Flies are costly. “A few years ago Dave Taylor (ARS, in Lincoln, Nebraska) and I wrote a review of stable fly knowledge, and we estimated that for all kinds of cattle enterprises combined—stockers, feeders, cow/ calf, etc.—stable flies are costing the beef industry more than $2 million per year, and that does not include the costs of control,” says Moon. “In terms of misery to the animal, horn flies in large numbers may be worse than stable flies. In larger operations out West where cattle are spread over huge range pastures, stable flies are not as big a problem as horn flies. The cattle are far away from the winter feed pastures where stable flies are breeding. In hot, dry summer, horn flies keep going, whereas the stable flies will slow down,” he says. Horn flies only develop in fresh cow manure. They don’t breed in feed-yard debris. “Pasture operations often have horn fly problems. Many people with horn fly issues have been relying on insecticide ear tags, so now we have fly resistance issues, which means we’ve lost the ability to use certain kinds of tags. There are many ear tags now for beef cattle but they are mainly pyrethroids and organophosphates. Two more categories recently came on the market and ivermectin is one of them. We usually don’t think of ivermectin as a topical insecticide for horn fly control, but it’s on the label. There is also a new compound called tolfenprol,” says Moon. “The fellow who does the most product testing is Dave Boxler, at North Platte, Nebraska, working with Sandhill Nebraska producers. He found that this new tag, containing tolfenprol, works for about 10 weeks. It has a different mode of action. We’ve switched among the different kinds of pyrethroid insecticides, and
cross resistance is probable, which means we’re really not rotating unless we change to organophosphate tags. Now, however, we can have a threeway rotation, and if you count the ivermectin we have a possible fourway. If a producer has lost efficacy to pyrethroids, a switch can be made to organophosphates and then to the tolfenprol. This will work, for a while.” There is not much else we can do to control flies in range operations because the cattle are spread out over such large areas that you can’t depend on dust bags, oilers, back rubbers, pour-ons or sprays. It’s a lot of work to round the cattle up and pour them. Most people put ear tags in just before they turn cattle out (which is often too early, before the fly populations are building up), and leave them in too long—which hastens fly resistance as the tags lose their efficacy. If you have a less extensive operation where you see the cattle more often, it pays to monitor them more closely, observe their behavior, and do some fly counts. “If in the heat of the afternoon the animals are standing around, bunching, this is an indicator that they are being attacked by some kind of biting fly. Watch your cows. If they are milling around in a fence corner, swishing, stomping and slinging their heads over their backs to dislodge flies, there’s a fly problem,” says Moon. Then you can figure out whether control is needed, and what kind of fly you need to control. Some people advocate counting/ estimating the number of horn flies on the animals. “Until they reach a certain population level, they are usually not a major problem. The point at which some folks feel you need to be concerned is 100 flies per side, or 200 per animal. You can live with a few, and refrain from treating them until the fly population builds up, and then hit them with a control tactic so you can knock them down for a while, and slow down selection for resistance.” The problem with turning cattle out CHAROLAIS JOURNAL
on pasture in the spring and tagging at turn-out is that it’s too early, and the protection runs out when you need it most, in late summer. He suggests aiming for horn fly control by early July, and if you are using ear tags, don’t leave them in all fall. As the tags lose potency, the flies that are not killed are the ones that are most resistant—to breed and produce the next crop of resistant flies. For horn flies, it pays to forgo control until fly numbers start hurting calf growth rates (in a cow-calf operation). “It’s not that horn flies are bothering calves so much as they bother the cows, and the milk output is dropping. If people can knock down horn flies for maybe a 6 week period, they get their money back. But aiming for full season control may be too costly. The horn flies don’t become really abundant until July or August, depending on how far north or south you are. We don’t see the high numbers here that some of the western and southern producers see,” he says. Some breeds of cattle are more resistant to flies that others, and individual cattle within breeds also show differences. A few people are selecting their breeding stock for horn fly resistance, among other traits. “In any herd, often the most productive and efficient cows tend to have resistance to parasites, flies, etc. There is no way to control aquatic biting flies (tabanids— horse flies and deer flies—mosquitoes) on cattle. About all you can do is select for hardy stock,” says Moon. Face flies can transfer pinkeye bacteria from one animal to another. “We don’t have very many tactics that work well against face flies. Horn flies are easy to control with topical products because they spend all their time on the animal. By contrast, face flies are just on the animal briefly, like stable flies. We don’t have much success controlling those insects by treating the animal, because maybe only 5 out of 100 of those flies are on the cattle at any one time,” he says. J U N E/J U L Y 2 0 2 0 71

Hard work and humility have been defining traits of the Vest family since Bill Vest ventured out to West Texas in 1887, and it took every ounce of hard work and humility to homestead and run cattle in the rough country of that part of the world. The hard work of more than a century paid off when Vest Ranches was selected as the 2020 Beef Improvement Federation (BIF) Commercial Producer of the Year. Nominated by the American Angus Association and the American-International Charolais Association, Vest Ranches received the award virtually during the BIF Conference on June 8, 2020. West Texas isn’t the easiest place to raise cattle, but on Vest Ranches, the management practices, innovative tools and excellent stewardship practices have helped the operation be efficient and progressive. “The BIF Commercial Producer of the Year Award couldn’t have gone to a more deserving ranch and family,” said Neil Orth, American-International Charolais Association executive vice president. “We are pleased to be a part of Vest Ranches’ story.”

MISS CHAROLAIS USA 2020
Baylee Mangrum is the 19 year-old daughter of Bryan and Tracie
Mangrum of Maramduke, AR. At the age of 5, Baylee began showing hogs through the 4-H, it wasn’t until she was 7 that she began showing cattle. Baylee is now an active member of the Arkansas Junior Cattlemen’s Association. It wasn’t until two short years ago that Baylee started showing Charolais influenced cattle. She took her first heifer to Des Moines, Iowa and fell in love with the breed and everybody involved in the association. Baylee has always shown Shorthorn influenced cattle, until she decided to add Charolais into her herd. Having only attended two AIJCA Junior National shows, the Charolais breed has had such a positive impact on Baylee’s life. She hopes to be involved in the association for years to come. Throughout high school, Baylee was an active member of the 4-H, FFA, Cheerleading squads, and a volunteer for multiple community service opportunities. She held offices in 4-H and FFA such as President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer. Baylee also held positions in the Arkansas Junior Cattlemen’s Association and is currently the head of the Miss/Princess competition. Baylee is in her sophmore year at Arkansas State University majoring in Agricultural Education with a minor in Agricultural Communications. With this degree and minor she hopes to instill the passion she has for agriculture and cattle in her future students and to stay an active member of the Charolais Association. Baylee hopes to be an advocate for the Charolais breed the rest of her time as a junior member and even after she ages out.
Baylee was sponsored by Owings Cattle Company.
