MAINE-ANJOU Headquarters

M. BLAKE NELSON AMAA Executive Vice President

Greetings, As we are heading into the last quarter of the 2020 roller coaster ride, I can’t help but acknowledge the resiliency of our country and the agriculture community. I would bet that this year all of us have witnessed occurrences that have disrupted or completely road blocked things from going the way we wanted. When this occurs we see determined individuals that will not settle and make things happen. I think that in life we can find good and bad in just about anything, it is simply your perspective or what you choose to see. Many of the cancellations do to Covid-19 have left disappointment, but they have also created opportunities for new ideas and efforts that may have never been considered. Throughout 2020 we have witnessed personal efforts that have benefited the masses. In our herds and our own programs I think we could use more of this train of thought. Many times we get stuck in a rut and if things are not going our way we continue to sink deeper and deeper into that rut, then it is up to us to decide if we are going to make things happen and climb our way out. We see this in our production practices and breeding programs, once we have seen previous success in a choice, we continue that path and this makes perfect sense until that choice doesn’t work anymore. We can make excuses and blame others or we can OCTOBER 2020

6

be objective and open to new ideas. We have all witnessed this on the farm or ranch and I have seen it many times at shows and sales. A producer has a certain type of cattle or genetics that have won or topped the market in the past, but today they no longer find that favor. That is when we see blame placed on the judge, politics, or accusing the winners of cheating. This is a great time to take a deep breath, analyze, and be honest with ourselves on our performance. Many times we need to break out of our previous mindset and evolve with the trends if we want to succeed in the present. Take the time to look around and see what is working, whether it be genetics or management practices, and then find the best way to implement them into our programs. “The secret of CHANGE is to focus all of your energy not on fighting the old, but on building the new.” Socrates Since the early 90s I have witnessed the trends and changes in Maine-Anjou cattle. Many of you have been of part of those changes and have seen more than I. Some of the trends have been good, some maybe not as positive, but regardless they have brought us to the modern Maine-Anjou cattle that are right for the times and much needed in the beef industry. Our breed today has been built on foundation genetics and programs that have got us here and we must never lose

sight of the traits and values that we stand upon, but we must also be pliable enough to see what the industry is demanding and make sure our product meets those specifications. I am excited about the future of Maine-Anjou cattle and where we can be if all of us make it happen! Ultimately, I call on you to promote our cattle and be open minded to what the market demands. It takes all of us to tell our story and reach both current and potential customers. The AMAA will be happy to help you with any questions on any of these topics, so please, contact us, we are here to help you. ** Although the National Western Stock Show has been canceled for 2021, please watch for developing opportunities to show and market your cattle in January. If you have any interest or questions regarding the Bright Lights Sale please contact myself, Josh or Lindsey. Best Regards, Blake MAINE-ANJOU - Vision, Vigor, Value!

MAINE-ANJOU Commercial Connection

JOSHUA CRIBBS AMAA Director of Commercial Development

The last few months have been rather rewarding for me, both as an employee of the American Maine-Anjou Association (AMAA) and an admirer of Maine-Anjou influenced genetics. We certainly had an interesting spring, and having to stay grounded from traveling wasn’t all that fun. The last month and a half I’ve been working to make up for lost time. My focus has been to bring customer service to you as breeders, but to also see as many cattle and visit with as many people as possible. To bring to light to the progression you, as breeders, have worked toward over the last few years. Since I began my work for the American Maine-Anjou Association, I can confidently say the cattle being sold and promoted this year are by far the deepest set I’ve seen. During my travels this fall, it’s been extremely rewarding to witness Maine-Anjou cattle selling head-to-head with other breeds. I am confident that the quality is better on the top end and the cattle are deeper as a set. What I’ve seen throughout my recent travels speaks volumes for the renewed energy for this breed – and for the implementation of breeding higher Maine-Anjou genetics, as OCTOBER 2020

well as incorporating Maine Angus cattle into the rotation. In the last 6 weeks, I have driven through South Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska, Colorado, New Mexico and Oklahoma. I don’t always get to see everyone, but those I have had a opportunity to see… well, it’s apparent that they are excited about Maine-Anjou cattle. The statement that continues to surface amongst breeders from all across the country is how their commitment to finding new options and different pedigrees allowed them to settle into different bulls and continue to be progressive. With great certainty, we can say that 2020 has not been the easiest year. If there is one thing that has remained constant and prevailing, it is that those involved in agriculture and animal agriculture are committed to persevering. Just as the breeders within our registry are committed to making Maine-Anjou cattle better, we – as an office staff and myself out in the field – are just as committed to telling others about the depth of quality. We bring forth strengthened reliability, but

also continued versatility. I cannot say enough of a thank you to all the Maine-Anjou breeders out there, your strength and commitment has been unwavering. I look forward to more travel and visits as we continue further into the Fall. This year might have started out a bit rough, but it’s finishing with a stronger focus to you as breeders and an even greater dedication on making sure we provide the best service we can possibly give. It’s about quality, it’s about longevity, it’s about Maine-Anjou!

MAINE-ANJOU Announcements, News & Events

NEW MEMBERS: All new members must choose a program when submitting a new membership. The two programs that are offered are MAPP and Breeders Choice. More information on these two programs is available by visiting maine-anjou.org and clicking on “Member Services” “MAPP Agreement.” If a membership is submitted without choosing a program, the new member will be placed in the Breeders Choice program.

MEMBERSHIP ACCOUNTS It is the AMAA policy to only share account information with those authorized on an active account, no matter the age of the account holder. The account holder must provide written permission to add a person(s) to their account to transfer and register on their behalf. Anyone that is not authorized on an account will not be provided passwords or invoice information no matter the age or relation to the account holder. The account holder is the only one that can call or e-mail the AMAA directly to remove or add any person(s) to/ from their account. Any authorized person on the account can register, transfer, obtain or change passwords once they are on the account. 2020 DUES If you have not paid your 2020 dues please do so as soon as possible. Dues run from January 1 to December 31 of each year no matter when you pay them. Active adult accounts will receive the Voice magazine as long as dues are current. You may pay your dues by logging into your online account. OCTOBER 2020

HELPFUL TIPS WHEN REGISTERING: To avoid delays in your registration work during our busy season follow the tips below. Double check that all blanks and information are correct and complete before mailing or submitting online. Things most commonly missed are: o Missing herd prefix and herd ID o Birthdates o Date of sale o Name of animal o Payment Make sure the person that is registering the animal owns the dam with the exception of ET calves. If an ET calf, make sure the donor dam has DNA verified and has been PHA & TH tested with the results on file. If you are checking on testing work please e-mail Paige at paige@amaapc.com. When calling or e-mailing please have the name and breeder number of the person submitting the work. When registering annual active dams for performance only animals please submit them online if you have the capabilities. This will help the registrar processing tremendously. We appreciate you and your business and want to make sure that the registration process runs as smooth as possible. Thank you in advance for your extra time in making sure all work is correct, complete and received in a timely manner.

REGISTRATIONS: Please dispose of any old registration and self-billing worksheets. The AMAA will no longer offer a 10% online discount for

registration work that is completed through Digital Beef. The AMAA will assess a $5 fee for any registration work received by fax, e-mail or by mail. To avoid this fee, please log into your online Digital Beef account to complete all registration work. New forms can be downloaded from our main webpage under Digital Beef/ Registrations – Printable Forms. If you need assistance logging into your online account please contact us at maine@amaapc.com. If work is faxed or e-mailed it is the responsibility of the breeder to give us a follow up phone call to make sure that the work is legible and to cover all fees. BLOCK REGISTRATION DISCOUNTS: Want to save on registration costs? Consider pre-paying for a block of registrations. The cost savings are as follows: • 15 head - 12% • 25 head - 15% • 50 head - 20% • 75 head - 25% • 100 head - 30% Blocks may only be used on animals under 13 months of age and may not be used on steers or foundation animals. Blocks will only be valid from January 1 - December 31 of each year. Any unused block registration numbers will expire. If you are interested in learning more about block purchases, please contact us at 816-431-9950. MAPP ENROLLMENT MAPP enrollment opened Sept. 1, 2020 for the 2021 year. All inventories will be need to be completed online.

MAINE-ANJOU Announcements, News & Events

If you need a paper copy please contact Donna Grame at (816) 431-9950 Ext. 303 or e-mail her at donna@amaapc.com. All inventories will be due no later than Dec. 18, 2020.

FOUNDATION ANIMALS: Non-registered bulls and females must be entered as a foundation animal prior to progeny being registered. All current “P” (performance only) cattle will be grand-fathered into the program. If the sire is an AI sire and registered at another breed association, the pedigree and testing must be on file with the AMAA. The charge to add a sire pedigree will be a onetime charge of $40. If the AMAA finds that the pedigree has already been paid for by another breeder, the $40 charge will not be applied. Dams registered at another breed association may also be added for a one-time charge of $25. See the new self-billing sheet for foundation fees. ONLINE TRANSFERS: When transferring an animal online make sure there is not a member number already created for the buyer. Creating more than one number for an individual creates registration problems later. If you find the buyer in the system at a different address please notify the buyer first to confirm the address and then notify the AMAA office to update the account. It is always a good idea to always search for the buyer using the search tool before doing the work, that way if they have a different address it is caught before entering the registration and transfer. When creating a new profile for a

buyer please make sure to never give a junior a farm name. Please enter the junior’s name on the farm line and also as the contact. RUSH ORDERS: If you are selling an animal, we ask that you register and transfer the animal in a timely manner to avoid extra charges and to assure buyers they are purchasing from a reputable business person. Rushes will be done in the order received; a rush fee is currently $50 (covers eight head). No work will be released until payment is complete. Rush work is processed ahead of the regular work that is received in our office and mailed by regular mail within one to two business days. We will do our best to complete rush work that is received in our office by 2 p.m. (Monday – Friday). There is no same-day turnaround. If requiring a registration number only, it will still be considered a rush as we still have to process the work to obtain the number. DNA, TH AND PHA REQUIREMENTS: Prior to registering any ET calves, all donor dams (including commercial or non-registered dams) must have DNA, TH and PHA on file in our office. Also, all AI sires are required to have the same on file. Therefore, our office will hold any ET registrations submitted out of dams without testing on file as well as all registrations out of AI sires that do not have complete testing on file. If the donor dam is deceased and not tested, we do require that the ET(s) have the tests done, in the

absence of the donor’s records. The DNA, TH and PHA testing can be done at GeneSeek. A submission form is found on our Web site, maineanjou.org. Samples must be on a hair card, blood card or TSU in order to be submitted. Sampling supplies can be ordered on our website under the Genetics/Testing tab. Animals must be in the AMAA herd book before testing can be requested. Please note that testing takes approximately 3-4 weeks from the time the sample arrives at the lab. We would like to start sending the test results by e-mail only, please make sure we have an up-to-date e-mail address for you, if applicable. BULL CALF REGISTRATION: If registering a bull calf born after Jan. 1, 2014, it must be TH/PHA free by parentage or have testing completed prior to registering and on file with the AMAA. Carriers will no longer be registered, but may be entered as a foundation animal. All progeny out of a Foundation carrier bull needs to be tested free of that defect prior to registration. If registrations are submitted before testing has been completed, the animal will not be registered. Instead the animal will be given a performance number at a nonrefundable penalty charge of $10. Once the animal has been tested the registration may be completed at the regular rate. Please plan accordingly as testing can take up to three or four weeks.

OTHER AMAA UPDATES: Please make sure to update any change in address, phone numbers or e-mails with the AMAA by e-mailing us at maine@amaapc. com, or by logging into your online account. If you have a credit card on file and have received a new card, please make sure to call us to replace the new card on file. Credit cards are not automically saved when paying online.

MAINE-ANJOU CATTLE FOR SALE: Looking for cattle to purchase or consign? Do not forget to check out our consignment sale list located at the top of the Digital Beef Cattle search screen called “Maine-Anjou Cattle for Sale”. Active breeders may use this tool at any time to consign animals as long as you have a login for Digital Beef. NATIONAL SHOWS Anyone showing in a junior or open class at the national level must be an active member with the AMAA or American Maine-Anjou Junior Association (AJMAA). Hey everyone! My name is Cassidy Barker and I am your American Junior Maine-Anjou Association (AJMAA) Vice President. This is my second year serving on the AJMAA board. I am from Kearney, Mo., and currently a junior at Oklahoma State University majoring in Agribusiness. I have enjoyed showing and raising Maine-Anjou cattle my entire show career having attended 11 AJMAA junior nationals and counting! I am extremely passionate about the Maine-Anjou breed and proud to consider the association home. I am so excited to “Let the Good Times Roll” in Chickasha, Okla., next summer. Next year junior national is schedule for June 19-24 and we are already preparing for a fun-filled week. We are hoping for a COVID-19 free week and are excited to take the junior national to the South. The AJMAA is extremely fortunate to have many amazing sponsors in the industry to help make our events so great. This year the junior board will be selling card advertisements for the calendar. We have done this before and feel it it a great way to promote your businesses and help out the AJMAA. New this year, we are starting a ‘Let the Good Times Roll’ cash raffle and are thrilled to see how it turns out! For the raffle, the junior board will be selling squares, each

square represents a different dollar value starting at $1 all the way up to $200. For each square purchased, your name goes into a drawing. Winners will be drawn live via Facebook. Cash prizes will be awarded for first place, $1,000, second place, $750, third place, $500, fourth place, $250 and fifth place, $100. Five other select squares will have swag to give away as well! Stay tuned and feel free to reach out to any junior board members to purchase your square or if you have any questions. I hope to see everyone at the major shows this fall/winter and wish everyone safe travels and good luck. Until then, stay safe and know we have many great things planned for the coming year!

We set an example for the juniors, and I want this board to represent friendliness, joy, and dedication to our positions!

Kaleb Miller School: Iowa State University Region 2, Secretary/Treasurer, Iowa

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR FAVORITE PART OF SERVING ON THE AJMAA JUNIOR BOARD? My favorite part of serving on the AJMAA board has been traveling to different parts of the country and meeting all the people who are part of the Maine-Anjou Industry. There are a lot of amazing people within this industry with awesome stories to tell.

WHAT INSPIRES YOU? My family inspires me the most. My family is my biggest support system. I can always count on my parents and my sister to be there to help me with whatever it may be I am working on. They have made my Junior Board experience possible by picking up the slack when I am working for the board rather than at home or the stalls. WHAT IS YOUR GOAL FOR THE JUNIOR BOARD THIS YEAR? My goals for the junior board this year are to be able to work together and become as good of friends as we were with last year’s board. When we all know each other well and are close it makes working and traveling together that much more fun.
