Many people have contacted me as their local MP on a diverse range of matters. Having been forced to move the Electorate Office had its challenges, however my staff and I did whatever was necessary to meet the needs of Geelong constituents. It is now great to be back in Pakington Street and settled in the new office. Being accessible to the community is something that is important to me as the local MP. We held an official office opening in September and I was pleased to see so many people from the Geelong community come along to check out the new space.

It has been a great journey for me as the Member for Geelong over the past 4 years. I have had the opportunity to work with many organisations, community groups, unions, businesses and individuals. Geelong is a great place to live and has become the vibrant city it should be as the largest regional city in Victoria. If I have the great privilege of again representing Geelong in the State Parliament after the state election on the 24th of November 2018, I look forward to continuing to advocate for the people of Geelong.

The opening began with a Smoking Ceremony by Norm Stanley and Welcome to Country by Corrina Eccles followed by a performance from the Deadly Dances. It was also great to have the Premier, Daniel Andrews to do the official opening speech. And of course Pakington Street is the home of Pako Festa, Diversitat’s much loved community festival, which makes a significant contribution to our region’s and state’s social capital through its annual celebration of the values of ethnic diversity, acceptance and harmony.

Ashby Primary School - $2.84 million, Barwon Valley School - $2.1 million, Belmont High School - $5 million, Chilwell Primary School - $2.41 million, Geelong East Primary School - $1.025 million, Manifold Heights Primary School - $660,000, Matthew Flinders Girls Secondary College - $7 million, Newcomb Park Primary School - $141,000, Newtown Primary School - $2.01 million, Oberon High School $2.5 million, Oberon Primary School - $1.407 million, and Oberon South Primary School - $1.2 million.

Held on the last weekend of February each year on Pakington Street in Geelong West, Geelong’s ‘multicultural heart’, Pako Festa incorporates an extravagant street parade, traditional foods, beautiful music and dance, authentic costumes, community arts, exhibitions and interactive workshops. The festival provides regional communities an opportunity to take ownership of an event with which they can identify. Beyond the appreciation and enjoyment of music, traditional foods and dance, the Pako Festa provides a unique opportunity for visitors to socialise and celebrate in harmony regardless of ethnic origin. During this past 4 years I have advocated strongly on behalf of the Geelong electorate’s State Schools. I am proud to say that over this period the Andrews Government has committed over $73.1 million to local State Schools. This is an unprecedented amount of funding, never seen before in Geelong. Compare this with the previous Government’s funding for education during 2011 to 2015 totalling $12.6 million. The Andrews Government record commitment to education is very clear. All students should have access to a high-quality education, no matter where they live. We are rebuilding Geelong High School - $12 million, and Whittington Primary School - $6.6 million. We have upgraded 14 ONPAKO

Under the asbestos Removal Program, Fyans Park Primary School received $2.74 million and Tate Street Primary School $1.545 million. Ashby Primary School and Barwon Valley School also received $200,000 each from the Inclusive Schools Fund. Newcomb Secondary College also received $3.5 million from the Shared Facilities Fund. Schools also received maintenance funding totalling $6.289 million across the Geelong electorate. We have invested $1.988 million from the camps, sports and excursions fund, invested $14.111 million in equity funding to Geelong schools to introduce programs that help disadvantaged students achieve better results at school and reach their full potential. More than 709 students have benefitted from the State School Relief Program each year so that no family should have to worry about affording a uniform for their child, and over 52,000 breakfasts have been served to kids in Geelong as part of our Breakfast in Schools Program. We have also recently announced that a returned Andrews Government will provide funding of $6 million to Newcomb Secondary College, $3.2 million to Newcomb Park Primary School and an additional $3 million between Geelong High and Matthew Flinders to cover the cost of asbestos removal. We also built and recently opened the new state-of-the-art Geelong Tech School. We established the Geelong Jobs and Skills Centre, and introduced 30 free TAFE courses and apprenticeship and trainee courses. And we are rebuilding the Gordon TAFE.

Geelong’s grassroots sporting clubs play a significant role in our community, particularly with young people. It has been a real pleasure working with sporting clubs in Geelong, they should be very proud of the work they do in our community and the support they provide to their members. Sporting clubs operate thanks to committed volunteers; without them clubs could not exist. Over the past 4 years, we have provided many grants to sporting clubs for uniforms, equipment and minor upgrades. Significant funding has been provided for major upgrades to the South Barwon Football & Netball Club, St Mary’s Sporting Club, Geelong Touch Football and Marshall Cricket Club and the newly built City of Geelong Bowling Centre. A commitment for a major upgrade has also been made to St Joseph’s Football & Netball Club. The massive pipeline of infrastructure projects across Victoria is creating jobs and opportunities, including here in Geelong. Our unemployment rate has dropped to 4.9% due to significant construction projects, school rebuilds and upgrades, redevelopment of Geelong Performing Arts Centre, redevelopment of Kardinia Park Stadium, Manufutures, Worksafe relocation and new building for example. The jobs Victoria Employment Network (JVEN) is the Andrews Governments commitment to help long-term job seekers facing barriers to employment and getting them into jobs. The JVEN services are delivered by employment specialists who work closely with employers to identify job opportunities and prepare jobseekers for those roles. I have had the opportunity to meet both employers and people who have gained employment through JVEN and have seen the success first hand. Our Victorian Industry Participation Policy (VIPP) ensures that local businesses are given a full and fair opportunity to compete for government contracts. With record levels of investment in 16 ONPAKO

infrastructure, there has never been a better time for local business to get involved in delivering the Andrews government’s major projects. Our crime rate in Geelong has dropped significantly with 25 new police allocated to the Geelong area, along with 21 new police custody officers, this puts more police back on the frontline rather than sitting with people in custody. We have introduced tough new penalties for carjackings and home invasions and a major shakeup of our bail system. Police have been given new powers, resources and technology to help them fight crime. The Community Crime Prevention Program has been a great success with 22 projects funded in Geelong to improve community safety. This also includes funding of an innovative community led project that is providing intensive support for young people aged 15 to 18 years who have been identified as serious or recidivist offenders, to create a pathway away from offending The police academy is full of new recruits thanks to the Andrews Government commitment to 3,135 new police officers. Domestic Violence and violence against women is the number one crime issue in Victoria. One women is killed by a partner or expartner every week. The Andrews Government has invested $2.6 billion to address violence against women. The Andrews Government held the Royal Commission into Family Violence and has committed to introduce all 227 recommendations resulting from the Royal Commission. We have seen a significant investment in family violence support, Police Family Violence Units, more emergency accommodation, the establishment and opening of the Orange Door shop front in Geelong and the establishment of Respect Victoria prevention agency. Having said all of this there is more to be done.

PAKO FEST 2019 Embracing Generational Culture Pako Festa was born when the Geelong Ethnic Communities Council Inc. (previously known as Geelong Migrant Resource Centre) gathered with Geelong West Traders and Geelong West City Council with an ambitious idea for a community-driven social event that celebrated the region’s diverse cultural communities.

18 ONPAKO

ARTICLE BY: Luisa LaFornara PHOTOS: Supplied

In 1983 the very first Pako Festa attracted 12,000 people and in 2018 (36 years later), more than 100,000 people attended, 5,000 people participated in the street parade and 10,000 people performed across five presentation stages. These days the festival is organised by Diversitat (previously known as Geelong Ethnic Communities Council Inc.) and has become Australia’s largest free to attend celebration of multi-arts and cultural diversity. Remaining the same throughout the years is the fact that Pako is about community and is led by community. The event continues to celebrate and highlight the extraordinary contribution made to this country by individuals, cultural groups and multicultural communities throughout Geelong and across Australia. Pako Festa 2019 will be the thirty-seventh year of Geelong’s much loved, award-winning, annual community street festival. Held on the last Saturday of February in Pakington Street, Geelong West, ‘the multicultural heart of Geelong’, it will incorporate an extravagant street parade featuring approximately 90 floats along with hundreds of performers representing 45 affiliated ethnic communities and close to 60 other community groups and organisations. The street will be lined with stalls selling traditional foods in addition to arts and crafts, and six separate stages in the precinct will present performances of music and dance as well as interactive workshops and exhibitions. The festival offers a unique opportunity for the 100,000+ attendees to socialise and celebrate in an arena of ethnic diversity and harmony, as well as gaining an appreciation of the great variety of artistic and cultural expression within Geelong’s multicultural community.

A very important aspect of Pako Festa is in its provision for Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) communities to continue to affirm and honour their contributions to Pako Festa over its 36-year history. Since its inception the festival continues to be a major event on the community calendar, and in 2019 Pako Festa celebrates 37 years of operation on Saturday 23 February from 9:00am-5:00pm. The festival theme for 2019 is ‘Generations’, the importance of embracing culture, respecting its past, present and future. You can expect to sample 20 local diverse cuisines; the smells and flavours will take you to another world. Pako Festa offers FREE entertainment for the entire family to enjoy across all six stages in addition to the Great Pako Festa Street Parade which begins at 11:00am with spectacular colour, music, movement and creativity from around the globe. ONPAKO 21

Local community groups involved in the event, whether it be in the street parade, cooking up a storm or performing on the day include: Afghan, Bosnian, Brazilian, Chinese, Croatian, Dutch, Fijian, Filipino, French, Greek, Hazara, Hungarian, Indonesian, Iranian, Iraqi, Irish, Italian, Japanese, Karen, Karenni, Lao-Thai, Lithuanian, Macedonian, Maitri, Maori, Nepalese, Nigerian, Polish, Russian, Scottish (Highland), Serbian St Nicholas, Serbian Youth Club, Sikh, Slovenian, Spanish, Syriac, Ukrainian and Wathaurong Aboriginal Co-op. Pako Festa also offers FREE activities for children! Following the 11:00am vibrancy of the Great Pako Festa Street Parade, head to the Geelong West Town Hall, the Family Entertainment Precinct, to enjoy a diverse program of non-stop fun and excitement featuring dancers, music and circus themed workshops and performances from 12:30pm-4:00pm. Visit the stall holders throughout the street for more FREE activities or locate a chill-out zone to rehydrate and recharge before continuing to embrace and celebrate the aweinspiring multiculturalism of our City by the Bay and beyond. The 2019 Pako Festa is being delivered by Diversitat and is supported by The Victorian State Government, Victorian Multicultural Commission and the City of Greater Geelong. In addition, it could not be delivered without the support of the local diverse communities and many other local and non-local organisations and businesses. Pako Festa continues to offer overwhelming participation and exploration of culture, place and person. As a great ambassador of multiculturalism, Pako Festa encourages understanding, tolerance and acceptance of the social and cultural diversity in the midst of our community. Most importantly, it promotes co-operation, sharing and improvement of inter-community relations and is a major fundraiser for the local CALD communities. Be sure to save the date (Saturday 23 February 2019) and join us at Pako Festa and share in the enriching connections of community and culture. All you need is a happy heart and an open mind. *Pako Festa is ‘access friendly’ allowing people of all abilities to enjoy the enriching experience of multiculturalism.*

EYEWEAR ON PAKO

ARTICLE BY: AMANDA SHERRING PHOTOS: MARK WILKINS AND SUPPLIED

Can you say… “I wear eyewear from Eyewear on Pako.”? Eyewear on Pako is well known as Geelong’s premium fashion eyewear retailer. Locally owned and operated, the vibrant Geelong West store has been part of the Pakington Street retail landscape for more than 16 years.

Owners Chris Benning and Peter Weston form a formidable team with over 80 years combined industry experience between them. “We pride ourselves not only on our extensive range of quality eyewear, which is continuously evolving, but also our second-tonone customer service. Our team are friendly, experienced and will work one-on-one with you to find the frames that suit your individual style and personality,” Chris says. Stocking a wide range of brands, Eyewear on Pako hand selects a collection that enables its customers to find a frame to suit their personality and individual needs. You’ll find recent new arrivals include RAEN, Oskar & Frank, Roger, Iyoko Inyake and Anne & Valentin. Within the range the team have also worked hard in sourcing local and independent brands—as a small business, this is something Eyewear on Pako is passionate about. “Over the years, our range of eyewear has expanded to include many independent brands. We like supporting smaller lesser known frame makers, that are just as passionate about great frames as we are,” he says. 26 ONPAKO

One such range is the timelessly crafted eyewear by Australian designer Roger Henley. Eyewear on Pako stands as one of only 40 stockists worldwide selected to promote the brand. Roger Henley frames can be custom made with different colours and shapes to suit the customer’s wishes. Celebrating a variety of frames that’s as diverse as our community, Eyewear on Pako proudly delivers Geelong’s best eyewear experience. As soon as you set foot in the door of the Geelong West business you’ll be offered experienced and personal service to help you find an individual and quality set of frames to suit your lifestyle. The business has established itself over a number of years servicing a loyal base of clients whilst also regularly attracting new clientele. People travel from all over Victoria and interstate to select from the unique variety of eyewear. You simply can’t find a great pair of specs online, and making great specs is exactly what Eyewear on Pako is famous for in the community. “A happy customer is our best form of advertising,” Chris says.

“We constantly have new people coming into the store telling us they loved a friend’s eyewear, and that the friend then told them to come and see us as our range and service are fantastic. That means more than anything to us.” While giving clients “eyewear to rave about” is a goal for the team, they also care about giving customers confidence in their sight and healthy vision. It’s important to have regular eye examinations, and the optometrists at Eyewear on Pako are experienced in providing comprehensive health and vision care for eyes of any age. “With two optometrists working most days, bulk billed appointments are easily accessible for eye examinations. We can also perform retinal scans and photography, screening for glaucoma, cataracts and macular degeneration,” Chris says. At the completion of a comprehensive eye exam an optometrist will guide you with ways they can assist improvement to your vision if required. Eyewear on Pako offer the latest technology in prescription lenses along with contact lenses, safety, and children’s eyewear. You can even choose a pair of designer sunglasses with or without prescription lenses. ONPAKO 27

Sixteen years on and Chris confesses that Geelong West was always where they wanted to call home. Surrounded by fellow likeminded independent business owners, there really is nothing like a dedicated, local small business to get exactly what you want while supporting local. “When Pete and I decided we wanted to go into business together the only location we wanted to come to was Geelong West. In our mind, it’s the best strip shopping in Geelong, with lots of local and independent businesses,” he says. “Over the years we’ve seen the Geelong West landscape change, and even more changes within the eyewear industry itself. Our team are confident in the Eyewear on Pako vision and we look forward to the next 16 years and beyond.” For eyewear that delivers on service, quality and style, stop by the friendly team at Eyewear on Pako today.

When the heritage listed Pakington Street venue hit the market, Santosh moved without hesitation in taking over the building— which was previously a Filipino cafe. “It was walk in and walk out,” Santosh says of the new ownership. With an understanding of what worked in the hospitality industry in Geelong after working at various hotels, restaurants and cafes locally and in Melbourne, Santosh got to work on transforming the space into a comfortable café. “We painted it a light colour as it was dark before and it used to be carpet floor—so we removed that,” he says. Red Radish is separated into three dining areas, with options for more private dining as well as a traditional communal space. Exposed brick walls feature in the heritage listed building, with light trickling in through the windows lining the length of one side of the venue. The venue welcomes diners for breakfast and lunch from 7am until 3pm and dinners from 5pm until 9pm. Six months into operating the business and Santosh is thrilled with the choice he made back in May. An even greater decision he’s made was moving his family to Australia from Nepal around 12 years ago. The change in scenery led Santosh to his pursuit of food, as he took up hospitality work while studying and simply fell in love with the industry. “When I came to Australia, I came to study and then I started working in cookery,” Santosh says before adding, “And I love cooking.” “When I came here I got a job in the kitchen and I was just loving it working in the kitchen.” While food cooked in the kitchen at home is quite different from what’s on the menu at Red Radish, Santosh loves showcasing the flavours in the dishes he creates. “I’ve been working in this industry for more than 12 years, so that’s the food I know,” he says of the café’s offerings. With a modern Australian menu, Red Radish features breakfast favourites of smashed avocado, house made granola and the breaky burger. Items that have proved extremely popular since opening are the variety of wraps, the sweet potato stack with bacon, spinach, tomato, poached egg and hollandaise and the Red Radish protein bowl with grilled chicken, feta, quinoa, black beans, beetroot hummus, fresh rocket and crispy chickpeas. The menu changes every season, showcasing seasonal and fresh local ingredients in dishes made to be enjoyed in a social setting. The extensive tapas menu is a great way to sample the array of flavours on offer at Red Radish. Each dish is full of flavour, with some even incorporating the café’s namesake. ONPAKO 37

“A radish is very popular back home and we used to make pickled radish and it used to be radish in water or an oil and we’d use it for a month. It’s also good for its anti-cancer properties, diabetes and for giving a healthy digestive system– it’s a good vegetable,” he says.

continues to be popular during lunch and dinner and Santosh plans to also expand this offering in future.

“But in Australia it’s a bit of a new thing and people often ask, ‘A radish, what is this?’”

“There hasn’t been any bad feedback and you can see the plates, they’re nearly licking the plates. They’re completely clean. We’re doing really well.”

The vegetable is represented far beyond the logo on the exterior of the building, as Santosh incorporates radish into salads, as a garnish and in various dishes on the menu. Aside from questions over the origins and meaning behind the radish, many customers are surprised to see a modern Australian menu on offer. “Most people don’t know our food and they think it’s another Indian restaurant,” he says. “Once they come in they surprise themselves and say, ‘Wow this place is amazing!’” Santosh plans to expand on the café’s offerings, with the approaching summer season hopefully extending the current late night dining to seven days. Specialty nights of 300gm Porterhouse steak and 300gm Rib Eye steak are also on the cards for the venue. Other slight changes to the menu include an all day brunch menu of favourites rather than separate selections. The tapas menu 38 ONPAKO

“Customers are very happy with the food and they’ve been giving us really good feedback,” Santosh says.

“They’re also surprised they’re getting a proper sized meal and not a small portion. That’s another reason why many people like us.” The comments from customers on the flavour of each dish are testament not only to Santosh’s abilities, but also to the quality of produce he selects. Meat is sourced locally from GB Foods, vegetables are from Nardi’s Produce in North Geelong and bread either comes from Laurent Bakery in Melbourne or La Madre in South Geelong. Recently joining Deliveroo, each dish can now be conveniently enjoyed in the comfort of your own home. However, there’s something to be said about enjoying a nice cooked meal, with great service and a bottle of beer to match. Scoring a 4.9 star review on Facebook and equally impressive ratings on Google and Deliveroo, if the reviews online are anything to go by, you’ll want to experience the service and food for yourself in person.

Their vision was to create a Restaurant Train which showcased the spectacular scenery of the Bellarine and Swan Bay, whilst offering premium local food and beverages. SODI CafĂŠ & Tapas Plating Up for Peeps and Poochies

Geelong’s coolest place to dine has recently opened its doors in Geelong West. Situated in the heart of Pakington Street the new neighbours have brought a little taste of Spain with their evening tapas menu as well as catering to our four legged friends. The trending new eatery which is fully licensed offers all day breakfast and lunch and tapas inspired dining on Friday and Saturday evenings.

Business owner Hayley McCully has taken the next big step in her career with the opening of her own doors to the public. Having always worked in hospitality, it wasn’t until after spending a year away from the industry that Hayley decided to take the plunge and become an entrepreneur, creating an oasis for all dog lovers. With a passion for good food, travel, family, friends and of course her poochies, Sodi had been in the works for quite some time. But it wasn’t until a spur-of-the-moment opportunity presented itself during early 2018 that Hayley committed herself to establishing the newest hotspot to hit Geelong West.

Owner Hayley McCully

Although, Sodi wouldn’t exist today without the love and support from her partner Kale Drought. Hayley explains, “I can’t stress enough that I wouldn’t be here without his immense amount of help throughout the renovation process.” Not only does Hayley have Kale to thank but Hayley’s gratitude also extends to Liv Edington and close family and friends. She is also thankful to Donald & Rosa Wilde, “For helping this dream become a reality and their passion for the success of Sodi.” Hayley is very appreciative of the love and support that she has received throughout her new adventures.

After four months and a lot of hard work resulting in a full renovation, Sodi finally became a reality. A lot of the interior design and style has an industrial influence, most notable is the art and lighting displays. Yet Sodi still exudes an ambience of comfort and warmth the moment you enter. And should you wonder where all the artworks have come from, look no further than the guy behind the coffee machine, in-house Artist Simon ‘Chippa’ Chiovitti has put together the extraordinary murals you see displayed. Not only is Chippa’s artwork quite spectacular, you’ll find that his skills also transfer to his coffee making abilities. Not only producing wonderful works of latte art but also some would say the perfect ‘cup of joe’. With her heart set on supporting other local businesses, Hayley is extremely pleased to share that most of Sodi’s produce, including the coffee, has been sourced within the Geelong and Surf Coast region. The coffee particularly, is sourced from Ocean Grind, located in Torquay. A few imported wines have been added to the menu as well to complete the Spanish tapas dining experience. With a background in cooking, Hayley is not only the business owner of Sodi but in fact, head chef, alongside sous chef and younger brother Luke McCully. You will even find younger sister Sophie working alongside the team as a waitress. Hayley says, “I love the business being family orientated.”

Hayley with partner, Kale Drought

Hayley continues, “I love creating and preparing all the dishes on the menu - I am stoked with how well everything is selling, the long hard road of creating the menu is paying off with such a positive response from our customers.” Hayley is yet to pinpoint a favorite dish across the menu saying, “Honestly I cannot pick one single dish as my favourite. I am so proud of the entire menu - breakfast, lunch and tapas.” Hayley has produced a diverse menu which she hopes will cater to all dietry requirements with the inclusion of vegan, gluten-free and dairy-free items. Two of the biggest inspirations behind Sodi Café & Tapas has come from Hayley’s love for dogs and dining, specifically dining and experiencing other cultures from around the world. With many trips to Europe and a love for Spain, its culture and cuisine, Hayley’s idea of introducing a little Spanish flavour to Pakington Street was well assured. Hayley says, “The tapas menu is a really cool different concept so I love that I’m bringing something different to the table and something that really stands out in Geelong and especially Pakington Street.” With the tapas styled Friday and Saturday evenings being a great success, Hayley and the team at Sodi are sure to have some exciting plans in store for the warmer months to come. ONPAKO 49

Hayley continues, “The tapas nights have been a huge hit and I am hoping to extend these hours throughout summer with the addition of live music and using our al fresco area to its full potential.” But the question on everyone’s mind is where the name Sodi has come from? Geelong’s new pooch friendly café has been christened after one of Hayley’s canine family members. Hayley has two gorgeous little pups, Sodi & Doni, and she wanted the name of the café to be modern, short and to the point as well as paying homage to her biggest inspirations. Nonetheless, Hayley hasn’t forgotten about Doni, with his name appearing on the cocktail list and breakfast menu. Hayley spends most days in the kitchen, however, once the team begins to relax within their new neighborhood, Hayley would love to venture out from the kitchen and say hello to her regulars as well as their dogs. Hayley says, “I love the atmosphere of the cafe and the vibe is exactly how I imagined it to be, the long hot summer nights are going to be perfect to grab a bite to eat and a cocktail.” The popularity of Sodi Café is confirmation that it’s the go-to destination to enjoy your favourite beverage and a bite to eat with family and friends. And should you be blessed with tail wagging besties of your own, then they too can enjoy a homemade pupcake and a puppycino in the rear courtyard or the front al fresco dining area. A considerable amount of heart and soul has gone into the opening of Sodi Café and it has certainly paid off as the opening of Sodi’s doors has been well received by locals through the whole of Geelong. Hayley says, “Since opening I could not be happier with the support from the Geelong community, I am so happy and glad people can come and enjoy themselves at Sodi. I love it all and am so proud and happy with everything. I can’t fault one item and have had a similar response from the public.” While the team is small at Sodi, they do have big dreams and hope to open another cafe down the track. Only seems right as Hayley will need to name another business after her other furry family member, Doni.

360Q

Delivering Delicious Diversity

Two years on from Barry Iddles re-opening 360Q and the effects have been felt right through the bayside town. “It’s been fantastic because what it’s done is it’s given a lot of locals jobs,” owner Barry Iddles says. “It’s created some atmosphere and hype along the harbour and it’s brought a lot of tourists into Queenscliff—there’s an enormous amount of tourists that come over on the ferry for lunch and go for a walk downtown.” When the opportunity arose to reopen the venue, which closed in 2014 under previous owners, Barry approached the business venture with decades of hospitality experience and a passion for those operating in Queenscliff to work together for the success of the town overall. 51 ONPAKO 51

52 ONPAKO

“I’m a bit of a team player, so when we first opened I went and bombarded all the local traders and invited them over for a free dinner.”

The diversity seen within the kitchen translates to the menu, with an overall Asian inspired feel to the dishes. Such quintessential Asian dishes as the Som Tam green papaya and warm chicken salad, Vietnamese style flash fried barramundi and grilled red miso salmon feature prominently.

His influence last New Year’s helped Queenscliff run the first fireworks display in 30 years with many other initiatives in town driven by Barry.

These Southeast Asian flavours are so popular, when the Banh Xeo Vietnamese rice pancake was taken off the menu it was apparent customers wanted it back.

Host to many events at 360Q such as the Carole King Tribute Show and Dinner, the Queenscliff Progressive Dinner and the Regional World’s Longest Lunch, it’s all in the interest of driving people to the region and his venue.

“We took it off but we put it back on because it’s an incredible dish and everyone loves it as an entrée,” Barry says of the rice pancake dish.

“It’s about working with others not against them,” Barry says.

“We’ve really pushed to keep everything happening,” he says. Inside the kitchen Barry doesn’t have much to worry about. With a qualified and diverse mix of chefs, his confidence in their abilities allows him to be present at other businesses like his Elk Restaurant in Falls Creek. The dynamic duo leading the team is Mathew Hallam from an impressive fine dining background and Andrew Helmore with vast experience in team building. Mathew and Andrew are instrumental in implementing some amazing dishes with their team and carrying on the vision of 360Q. “We’ve got quite a good mix of chefs, Drona, he’s Nepalese, and creates things on the menu like momos. We have a Filipino chef Melvin who is up at the snow at the moment and a Canadian chef who’s very versed on South American food—so it’s just putting on a team that have got some great talents,” Barry says.

A world-renowned chef himself having run Sorrento Sailing Couta Boat Club, 333 in Melbourne and the Tarnuk Room at the Australian Gardens, Barry normally crafts the menu at 360Q. For its newest iteration this spring, Barry left the diverse team of chefs to their own devices. “This time I’ve let them have free reign and it worked really, really well,” he says. “There are unique dishes, flavours, colours, presentation and perfection in this new menu.” Popular dishes of the Portarlington mussels, the Chinese style sticky braised beef ribs and the return of the Banh Xeo Vietnamese rice pancake remain on the menu, appeasing regulars and winning over new visitors. A comment that regularly comes through to 360Q is the ability to capture not only the flavours of Southeast Asian cuisine, but also the very particular balance of sweet and sour in each dish. ONPAKO 53

Personally for Barry it comes through many years of cooking Asian cuisines and his extensive travels throughout Asia. This belief in experiencing the food at its source is something Barry believes strongly in and he regularly takes chefs along with him to strengthen their understanding of the flavours. With somewhat of an itinerary for these chef excursions, Barry takes them to Thailand, Luang Prabang in Laos and Siem Reap in Cambodia. It’s the villages on Tonle Sap Lake in Siem Reap that offer a particularly concentrated level of inspiration. “Well these different villages [on Tonle Sap Lake] have their own unique flavours and it’s just inspiring the chefs,” he says. “I took a couple to Vietnam at the end of January and did three cooking classes—so it’s just about learning flavours, the ingredients and bringing it back with local produce. “When they come back after they’ve realised what the flavours are it’s about making the dish come alive. Presentation in Southeast Asia isn’t that fabulous but the flavours are amazing. So it’s presenting that dish in a smart manner. It’s very important they go over and understand.” For Barry personally these travels extend beyond the culinary, and he has invested much of his time and money into the communities. On his first trip to Vietnam he met a young man called Auod whom he has helped through school, gain a job and in return educate his brothers as well. Following this experience with Auod, Barry has taught students himself, donated funds and created the highly successful fundraising initiative the Skinny Duck. “My alarm went off at 5am and it was the day the ballot opened for [Heston Blumenthal’s] the Fat Duck,” he says. “Tickets were $525 54 ONPAKO

each and so I put in for four and thought, ‘Oh my God, that’s stupid. I can educate 12 kids to university for the cost of four meals’.” Barry then read an article on FareShare stating that for the cost of every meal sold at Heston’s it was possible to create 1,050 meals for those in need. The Skinny Duck fundraising event ran and ended up raising $131,000 for underprivileged Victorians. With each initiative Barry undertakes, whether for his own businesses or philanthropic activities overseas, he invests himself 100 per cent into the project. Continuing on from the success of last year’s New Year celebrations, Barry is putting on the biggest celebration yet to welcome in 2019. Lunchtime sees two sessions with a dinner event to close the day’s celebrations. With attendees coming over on the ferry from Sorrento, the venue will see in excess of 600 people throughout the day. The New Year’s festivities at 360Q serve as the biggest calendar event for the venue and a fitting celebration as the business acknowledges the success of its second year and what will surely be an even more successful 2019.

LANDMARK TRANSFORMATION UNDERWAY A new era is dawning for the arts in Geelong and leading the charge is the city’s performing arts centre where a major redevelopment is currently underway.

Geelong Performing Arts Centre’s $38.5 million Ryrie Street Redevelopment, funded by the Victorian Government with some philanthropic support, will create a stunning new landmark in the heart of the cultural precinct.

and dance studios, as well as taking the visitor experience ‘nextlevel’ with beautiful new foyer and bar areas. A major public art commission will complete the design with an iconic artwork to be created for the centre’s eastern exterior wall.

Due for completion in mid-2019, the Ryrie Street Redevelopment will enable a greater number of people to access and enjoy the centre, and make Geelong even more attractive to ew business, investors, tourists and residents.

The redevelopment will meet the needs of the city’s growing creative industry, with a space dedicated for use by creative practitioners and organisations.

Redevelopment will transform the streetscape, while vastly improving accessibility and the experience for artists and audiences.

Designed by international Melbourne-based architecture studio, HASSELL, and built by award-winning Kane Constructions, the project will redefine the centre.

The transformation of the centre is well underway and Geelong theatre-goers will soon be greeted by a striking new entrance, along with improved accessibility to the theatres, new rehearsal

The design blends the old and the new, introducing a modern translucent facade, and revealing the facade of the old Steeple Church.

Steeped in history Demolition of the former shops and dance studios on Ryrie St began in November 2017 and was a delicate, brick-by-brick process due to the complexity of the buildings and the integration of the old church into the new design.

By the 1950s, both the Plaza Theatre and GAMA theatres were deemed “hopelessly obsolete” but it wasn’t until the 1970s that the push for a new theatre gained momentum.

The ‘Steeple Church’ opened in 1857 and was decommissioned in 1914 when the congregation moved to Newtown and the building was purchased by the Band of Hope Union.

The Band of Hope building and Plaza Theatre were incorporated into the new Geelong Performing Arts Centre, which opened in 1981, boasting two theatres - the Ford Theatre (now The Playhouse) and the Blakiston (now Drama Theatre). Dance studios were accommodated in the former Steeple Church and upstairs of the former Mechanics Institute.

The steeple was dismantled and a new building, incorporating a strip of shops, was built around the church, between Barwon Water and the former Mechanics Institute (and Plaza Theatre).

The Playhouse underwent a major facelift in 2010 (re-opening in 2011), however the rest of the centre has remained largely unchanged since it was built 37 years ago.

The main hall of the church was leased to Geelong Association of Music and Art (GAMA) in 1946 and converted into a 280-seat theatre.

Many materials and fittings from the former buildings including leadlight glass windows, pressed tin from the ceiling, timber flooring, and even sandstone footings will find their way into new locations and uses as the project team actively seeks opportunities to re-purpose items from the site.

The adjacent Mechanics Institute was destroyed by fire in 1920s then rebuilt as the 950-seat Plaza Theatre.

TUCKERS FUNERALS Celebrating 135 Years of Funeral Care The company’s history dates back to the 1880’s. Over the years Tuckers Funeral and Bereavement Service has grown from a father and son operation into a company that now employs more than 40 local staff who continue to uphold the family traditions of care and compassion from the nineteenth century. Any organisation that has lasted for more than 135 years has achieved so much and Tuckers is no exception. Using their ability to provide products and services for our culturally diverse community Tuckers have evolved as an industry leader.

ONPAKO 67

Charles Henry Tucker circa 1938

COMPANY TIMELINE 1883 F. H. Tucker Builders, Undertakers & Timber Merchants opened for business in 1883 in Wycheproof, Victoria. At this time Frank Henry Tucker operated his family business from a two room cottage with one standing desk, a couple of oil lamps, a horse drawn hearse and each coffin was individually handmade on site.

1916 Frank’s son Charles Henry Tucker (born in 1894) was raised and worked in the family business. In 1916, Charlie served his country joining the (first) Australian Imperial Force (The Great War 1914-1918) at age 22. Returning to Australia in February of 1919, Charlie was awarded a military medal for bravery in France.

1925 In 1925, the business operations moved to Hope Street in Geelong West under the management of Charlie and his wife Ivy ‘Irene’ Tucker. At this time they built a stunning brick funeral chapel featuring traditional arch windows in Hope Street Geelong West. After much needed refurbishments in the late 1990’s, this beautiful chapel is still in use today for more intimate funeral services. 68 ONPAKO

Sadly in 1932 Frank Tucker passed away. Honouring family history and the traditions set by Frank and Charlie, today Tuckers Funeral Service still operates from the original site developed by the Tucker Family in Hope Street, Geelong West.

1935 Charlie Tucker embraced Geelong West and all it had to offer. He was a community minded man and from 1935 till 1948 whilst managing Tuckers, Charlie served as Geelong West City Councillor being mayor in 1945 and 1946. In November of 1936, Tuckers welcomed Les Cole to the team. Les was driving mourning cars on a fairly regular basis to support Charlie and the growing business. He didn’t know it at the time, but Les and his family would become an integral part of Tuckers future, expanding and building on the traditions passed down from each generation to what is internally known today as the ‘Tuckers Way’.

1941 Following in the traditions set by Charlie Tucker, Les also served in his country’s defence working as an ambulance driver on the Mornington Peninsula. In 1942 Charlie suffered a heart attack and

1929 Funeral Photograph Petty Officer Parsons

Les was returned home from war to assist as Funeral Care was deemed ‘an essential service for the community’. Having to take on more responsibility, at the age of 28 Les was now full-time (all hours of the day and night as needed) working in the funeral business. Led by the traditions set before him, Les’ community involvement included teaching sunday school at Latrobe Terrace Church of Christ. He believed being a good role model for youth was a very practical and effective way to express one’s faith.

1954 Outside of the funeral business and his service to the Geelong West Council, Charlie was actively involved in local community groups. He served as a member of Geelong Rotary, President of the Geelong West Pipe Band and a member of St. Andrew’s South Masonic Lodge just to name a few. Charlie Tucker sadly passed away in 1954, at which time Les Cole stepped up to manage the company for Mrs Tucker. A few years later, in 1965, the Cole family came to live next door to the business in Geelong West, allowing Les to be more responsive for families at their time of need. The original home they lived is still standing, although it has been

Past Brochure and business card

repurposed as the main office, and continues to be the heart and soul of Tuckers today.

1969 After the war Les and Phyllis Cole with their Son Trevor bought into the funeral business. The Cole family eventually assumed full ownership keeping the name and traditions of Tuckers as can be seen today. Les Cole spent more than 60 years of his life supporting members on the community in their time of need whilst developing and improving Tuckers Funeral Service. Les’ exceptional community work was honoured by receiving a Paul Harris Fellowship from the Rotary Club of Geelong in 1982. Les’ son Trevor also continued this tradition of community care as a past president of the same Rotary Club also being a Paul Harris Fellow. In time Les’ son Trevor, and his Grandsons along with their families, followed the family tradition of caring for families in their time of need and in their own way continued to support the local community.

1971 The land at 67 Hope Street was purchased from McKenzies Wreckers. This made way for Tuckers Geelong West Chapel to

Geelong West Chapel

be built and at the time was seen as major development for the Geelong area. Tuckers have always fostered an innovative approach when providing care for families. In the 70’s Phyllis Cole would personally make an individual beautiful floral tribute as a gift for each family saying farwell to a baby or child. This compassion, along with many other examples over the years, has pioneered the funeral care Tuckers provide today. In the late 70’s under the management of Trevor Cole, Tuckers introduced Bereavement and Aftercare services. Employing specialised team members to provide care and support for families ongoing after the funeral service. As an extension of services that were already being provided it turned out to be a much needed service for the community. Today, the Bereavement and Aftercare program extended to families beyond the funeral is something unique that only Tuckers offer. The program has been developed over many years and is provided to the wider Greater Geelong community. In 1972 Les and Trevor Cole finally convinced their friend Ross Allen to commenced employment

Trevor and Les Cole

at Tuckers. Still working as a Funeral Director today, Ross had conducted thousands of funerals for families across the Greater Geelong region over an impressive 46 years. Community connection is also a tradition Ross has continued, being involved in church leadership for more than 50 years and working member of rotary for more than 40 years.

1985 Under management of Les’ son Trevor Cole, Tuckers completed building works and opened the new Grovedale Facility. This facility was seen as a much needed resource for the growing population on the southern side of town. Officially opened on the 4th December 1985 by the honourable Neil Tresize, this landmark is still very well known in Geelong and continues to service an ever growing area of Geelong today. It was also around this time Les and Trevor decided to introduce reception staff to the business. This was a first for Tuckers, but the support from the additional team members allowed more time for management to focus on community and service delivery.

2001 Sadly in 2001 Les Cole passed away. At this time Trevor, and

Left to right: Trevor Cole, Les Cole, Brendan Cole and Gavin Cole

Les’ grandsons Brendan and Gavin (along with their families), continued caring for families in their times of need following on the family traditions set by Les, and those before him. Embarking into a new century, it was highlighted how much funeral services had changed over the years. Back in the early 1900’s a funeral was a private and mournful event were everyone attending wore black. Funerals were changing to become more of public event that celebrated a life. It was around this time Tuckers extended their Bereavement Care services to include a Christmas Service. This initiative was created to provide families with much needed grief support around the Christmas and holiday season. As a public event the invitation was extended to all families across the region to come together and remember those loved one whom have passed. Having helped so many bereaved families over the years, this free public event is now a permanent fixture on Tuckers calendar.

2007 Tuckers have always been very innovative in their approach to providing funeral and bereavement care to the community. In 2007

Tuckers decided to expand the business by purchasing the Geelong and Lara divisions of Tattersall Funeral Care and Hepner Funeral Service. Following this Mark and Kathy Osborne also became part owners in the company along with the Cole family. While the traditions would not change, the Osbourne family came with strong Christian Faith which continued the founders belief of supporting the local community. In 2009, Tuckers commenced the redevelopment of the facilities in Geelong West. This included restoring the original funeral chapel along with repurposing the family home into the main reception office. It should be noted that the construction was unique as it was very environmentally resourceful with an additional focus on disability usage and access.

2011 In 2011 Tuckers showed great innovation by introducing the ability to share funerals live across the globe for families unable to attend. Funeral Webcasting was a first for the funeral industry in Geelong and was very well received by the community and today has become quite common. Also in this year Tuckers won a Geelong Business Excellence award and received an Alcoa Access Award for the ONPAKO 69

disability access provided during recent redevelopments. In late 2012, Tuckers embarked on an exciting new journey as the company was purchased by the Australian group InvoCare. Joining the InvoCare team ensured Tuckers was well placed to continuing to provide exceptional service to local families as well as further opportunities for the team across the region. The opportunity allowed Tuckers to continue traditions passed down from many generations of Funeral Directors.

2018 Currently Tuckers are the largest regional funeral director in Victoria and employ more than 40 local staff members. Along with providing funeral and bereavement care to the Great Geelong region, Tuckers also provide community education through the Gordon Tafe and the local health sector.

70 ONPAKO

Continuing the strong tradition of support for the local community, through sponsorships, donations and active involvement Tuckers are involved with a diverse range of local clubs, are actively involved in arts and culture as well as providing much needed support to the local health and wellbeing sector. Building on the extended care for families, Tuckers Bereavement Care service continues strongly to support local families beyond the funeral. This service is offered free to all families and includes over the phone support, one on one meeting, links to community groups and additional support, and the staff even send hand written notes to families in their time of sorrow.

2019 AND BEYOND Building on traditions whilst being able to provide a modern service for families, Tuckers will be refurbishing the facilities at

both the Grovedale Chapel and the Geelong West Chapel. These renovations are aimed to provide modern light filled spaces enabling families to celebrate the life of a loved one in the way the community are telling us that they would like to. These upgrades form part of the future plans continuing to grow Tuckers Funerals ability to provide exception funeral care for the Greater Geelong Region. The tradition of community service and extended care beyond the funeral is very much today the heart of Tuckers, with efforts to build strong

communities through charitable contributions and community involvement continuing into the future. Tuckers have built a trust with local families, a trust that can only come from 135 years of care for families beyond the funeral service. Traditions of care and community have been handed down across generations at Tuckers. Today these traditions are continued as the team share the same innovative spirit of their founders whilst ensuring care and quality inspires every funeral service.

Aqua Maternity

ARTICLE BY: TALIN HADLOW PHOTOS: MARK WILKINS AND SUPPLIED

Making a splash with stylish swimwear and more Aqua Maternity is making a splash! The family boutique managed by sisters Ainsley and Erin is supplying women with comfortable, fashionable and affordable swimwear for any stage of pregnancy and body type.

The duo launched Aqua Maternity in 2012 as an online store, stocking Australian loved brands as well as international labels to create a swimwear range that Erin, whilst pregnant, struggled to find. Ainsley explains, “Aqua Maternity began when Erin was pregnant. She was doing a pre-natal swimming class and she couldn’t find any maternity swimwear she liked. The ones that she did find were black, frumpish and not very stylish.” Discovering this gap in the market for supportive and fashionable maternity swimwear, the pair jumped at the opportunity to provide women with a one stop shop for maternity swimwear, offering over 50 styles for customers to choose from. Fast forward six years and Ainsley and Erin are now celebrating the opening of Aqua Maternity Boutique, located on Minerva Road, Herne Hill. The store opened its doors on Wednesday, August 1, 2018 showcasing their great variety of swimwear, along with a few new elements. With the successful launch of the boutique the sisters have branched into maternity apparel, giftware and a children’s range. However, their main focus remains on swimwear. Now stocking more than 12 brands of swimwear and specialising in fittings, the duo are excited for women to be able to come into the store, try on the garments and share in their pregnancy journey. Erin says, “Pregnancy is a really exciting time for a woman and we want to help celebrate the journey they are on. We want them to feel beautiful and special. We want to help them find that piece that they look good in, are comfortable in and speaks to their normal style as well.” Ainsley adds, “We have sourced these great brands and now we’re able to display them for ladies to come in and try on and find a style that suits their body shape and that they feel great in.”

76 FASHION & BEAUTY

Erin and Ainsley grew up in Geelong, so it was only natural for them to open the boutique in their home town, especially when there was such a market for it. Erin says, “Here in Geelong, there’s not been a lot of maternity clothing available so we really want to be a one stop shop. We are Geelong’s newest pregnancy and baby lifestyle store. We still have a real focus on swimwear, we’ve been selling it for over five years now and have over 50 styles in store and online. We really know what we’re doing in that space.” With both sisters specialising in customer service and women’s fittings, it’s their goal to ensure that women feel comfortable and confident in their products. “It’s important for us to know women come in different shapes and sizes so we cater to the plus size woman as well as the size eight. We’ve really got a style that will suit all stages of pregnancy and nursing.” Home-grown is something Aqua Maternity celebrates and looks for in a supplier, therefore stocking favourite Aussie maternity swimwear brands such as Zoggs, Cake Maternity and Angel Maternity, as well as some stylish looks from Europe. “We have a mix of Australian and International labels. We have all the Aussie favourites and we work hard to mix that up with international styles. A lot of our swimwear comes from Europe so it’s on trend, with some of our best sellers imported from France and the UK, so we really try to offer women something they just can’t find elsewhere. I think that’s been our point of difference. We want you to be stylish, we want you to look good in it but ultimately, we also want it to be affordable.” Keeping a sharp eye on trends and classics, Aqua Maternity knows what to look for in swimwear. Ainsley says, “Stripes never go out of fashion, but we’re often looking for what will be the next trend and who’s making that in a maternity swimsuit because there’s no reason why you can’t feel stylish when you’re pregnant floating in a pool.” Aqua Maternity loves supporting Australian made and owned brands with quality materials and good support. “When something new pops up we try to get that in store. We’re dedicated to making Aqua Maternity a pregnancy and baby destination store. We want to have a full range so we’ve increased the collection over time and keep it really Erin McGowan & Ainsley Kirk, owners of Aqua Maternity FASHION & BEAUTY

fashionable, and practical so you feel supported and comfortable while you’re swimming.” Aqua Maternity also stocks Australian environmentally friendly brands such as Never Working Mondays, a company that takes wetsuit offcuts that were previously going to landfill and turns them into baby swimmers. “If we can find Australian made and owned we love to stock it. We are always looking for businesses that have a good carbon footprint, that are using fair work and companies that are doing something different.” Expanding from an online store was an exciting challenge for Aqua Maternity, one that has changed the dynamics of the business in a positive way, with the adding of a special selection of complementary brands and seeing customers return for quality products and a friendly chat with Ainsley and Erin. You can now find locally sourced candles, jewellery, home décor and children’s toys in store along with all the mama essentials including Cake Maternity lingerie, SRC pregnancy and recovery garments, vegan and cruelty free pregnancy and baby skincare products and remedial ice and heat packs designed just for ladies. The addition of clothing has opened another avenue for Aqua Maternity, stocking the latest maternity fashion trends that can be worn well after pregnancy.

Erin explains, “Our clothing is for pregnancy and beyond. We love modern flexible designs that you can continue to wear as you transition from pregnancy into nursing, which can then become part of your staple mum wardrobe. We’re trying to separate ourselves from the standard pregnancy styles that have been around for a long time.” The sisters now think of what’s next and when, with dreams of designing their own maternity swimwear line and ideas to further expand the business. “It’s hard to think that when we first opened the online store six years ago that we would now be in our own little boutique in Geelong, which was always a bit of a pipe dream but here we are and it’s amazing.” Aqua Maternity hasn’t yet finished making a splash, which is great news for the women of Geelong and beyond.

FIVE FT. ONE A space to relax and have fun Growing up in family-owned pubs and restaurants, Zara Ramia learnt the ropes early on as to what made a successful hospitality business. With this knowledge at her disposal, Zara decided to go out on her own with her new Pakington Street concept cafĂŠ, Five ft. One.

“Being brought up in a business like the Sphinx, you learn how to speak to a complete stranger so quickly, nowadays you can’t stop me from talking. It is so important in this industry to have a good personality, as I feel like customer service is what really makes a good café,” she says. “My dad is my hospitality encyclopedia. He is probably the hardest working man that I know of, so having him around and watching him work from a very young age has been so rewarding and valuable. He is the kind of business person who I aim to be.” As the Ramia’s also own Fisherman’s Pier and The National Hotel, Zara has experienced life behind and in front of the bar as well as managing staff. The only thing she hadn’t experienced was owning her own business. “I’ve been working for family for over 10 years now, also running a personal training and makeup business. However, I’ve always said I wanted to open my own café. I think I just woke up one day and said ‘I’m doing it’,” Zara says. Taking over previous business Fika and Co, Zara had visited this café with her family for a coffee on days off a number of times. With the business up for sale for quite some time, it wasn’t until Zara saw the ‘For Lease’ sign in the window that her dreams of one day opening her own café became a possibility. “At the beginning everyone thought I was joking about opening this space, it wasn’t until I had the leasing documents that everyone started to see how serious I was about it and I’ve never been more excited,” Zara confesses. “I am so passionate for this industry. Hospitality basically runs through my veins so being able to finally open up my own place is a dream come true.” The new café serves grab and go food including Paninis which Zara makes fresh in the mornings, smoothie bowls and many other delicious to-go treats. Lebanese za’atar pizzas will also feature on the menu showcasing Zara’s culture while adding some new flavours to Pakington Street. “My background is Lebanese-Italian so I wanted the café to showcase something from my nationality. There will be a lot of different Lebanese treats for everyone to try,” she says. The concept aims to also create a ‘one-stop-shop’ for visitors and a cohesive space for the businesses within it. Operating in the rooms behind the café will be a variety of health and beauty services including a massage therapist, nail technician, make up artist and wax technician. “I love the idea of a co-working space. I think that combining health and beauty with a café is such a good concept. You’ll be able to have a coffee or a feed before or after your appointment, and the best part is you’ll only have to walk down the hallway to get it,” she says. ONPAKO 87

This ability to connect businesses and customers in the one building is extremely underutilised in the area, and shows Zara’s forward-thinking approach to business. Translating Zara’s vision for the café into reality has been a rather family affair, with her ‘Poppy Joe’ undertaking a lot of the work, Eddy; a good family friend co-ordinating the tradesmen and her auntie Mandy designing her logo and painting the mural. With the café’s name a direct reference to Zara’s height, the logo represents who she is—right down to Zara’s signature bright pink nail polish, which she proudly wears on the day we meet. It also serves as a clever nod to the beauty element of the additional businesses within the space. A self-confessed coffee lover, Zara has selected Tim Adams’ Specialty Coffee from Noosa as the beans of choice for her machine. With two specific blends, the coffee is hand-selected by Tim from farms across the globe. ‘The Nurse’ is the house blend for the café, with beans originating from Columbia, Brazil, Papua New Guinea and Nicaragua. The secondary blend, Chapola, is a mix of Brazilian, Ethiopian and Columbian beans. Aside from the taste of each blend, what really appealed to Zara was the passion Tim had for the business and the coffee industry as a whole. Proceeds from the Chapola blend go directly back to the farmers used. “He goes over and picks the beans himself, so he’s really invested in it,” she says. With confidence in the quality of her chosen blends and its impending popularity, Zara is going to put a very competitive price on her coffees, starting at around $3.50 for a small takeaway. “I’m not going really high with the prices, I can’t wrap my head around how some places charge an arm and a leg for coffee. If it’s good quality and people love it they’ll come back,” she says. In addition to this, Zara will implement an app for customers to order their coffees and save them much-needed time as they seek out their caffeine fix. While this attention to detail can be attributed in part to Zara’s hospitality upbringing, it also comes from her own experiences as a customer and knowing what she likes. All in all, she wants to create a space that is fun and inviting—whether they’re stopping by for a coffee or a massage.

Five ft. One

“I wanted to create a space for people to come, relax and have fun also,” Zara says with a smile.

GEELONG AQUATIC CENTRE

ARTICLE BY: AMANDA SHERRING PHOTOS: SUPPLIED

Enhancing swimming skills through sensory activities Since establishing the new ‘baby and me’ program in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, the overseas centre has seen a steady increase in attendees and a new focus on the importance of learning to swim.

ONPAKO 95

“It’s really going well,” Geelong Aquatic Centre owner Debbie Gill says. With a second Southeast Asian centre in Johor on the border of Malaysia and Singapore, due to open in the coming months, Debbie is positive of the impact it will have on children in Malaysia and Singapore—both of which have worryingly high statistics on drowning related deaths. Staff have had a chance to take some training in Malaysia to improve the program there. Closer to home, Debbie and the team have implemented changes to ensure Geelong attendees are getting the best learning experience possible at the Geelong Aquatic Centre. The lower pool has been re-fibreglassed, eliminating any lumps and bumps on the surface and blue matting has been installed on the floor around the pool, adding to the bright and fun environment of the centre overall. Another change at the centre is the addition of aqua sensory activities into long-running programs. “We are not changing our developmentally sequential program which allows for the individual rate of development of all participants. We are incorporating sensory activities and equipment allowing young ones to explore and develop using their senses through touch, colour, smell and sight,” Debbie says. “They are able to crawl over and swim under and through equipment, develop their tracking skills to enhance their learning.” Studies around the world have proven the impact of sensory activities to children’s development, with many indicating a noticeable difference in their progression compared to their peers. An internationally recognised study by Professor Robyn Jorgensen from Griffith University in Queensland, showed that babies and children who took part in learn-to-swim programs from an early age, showed development 12 months in advance of their peers. Geelong Aquatic Centre was asked to be part of this study. Sensory activities and equipment will also be added to the SWorDfish program for children with a disability, which runs on Saturday afternoons. “I see such a difference from the children that walk through the door,” she says. “From the first time they come through and they won’t even look at you, to before the end of the term you say ‘Hello’ and they say ‘Hello’ and wave back to you. They’re familiar with the centre, in the water and the swimming just does so much for them.” “Things they can’t do on land they can do in the water. Some children that can’t walk on land can walk in the water with some assistance. In water they can make the decision whether they want to move or not.” 96 ONPAKO

With the perfect swim school centre, the three pools (located in two separate buildings) cater for all swimming abilities. The pools downstairs are set to a warmer temperature of 32 degrees perfect for babies and young children getting an introduction to the water. All pools are salt chlorinated, with the upstairs pool being deeper and wider and set to a cooler temperature, making it perfect for those advanced swimmers and squads. For Debbie, the ability to make a difference with a child’s confidence in and out of the water is a rewarding part of the process. Passionate about the changes a learn to swim school can make, Debbie travels the world sharing her knowledge with swim teachers. Also hosting regular Austswim teacher training courses at the Geelong Aquatic Centre, Debbie often sees swim teachers travel from across the state or from overseas to visit her centre and learn the art of teaching young people how to swim. Geelong Aquatic Centre prides itself on the quality of their staff, their program and the quality of their water. With the holiday season fast approaching, the Geelong Aquatic Centre stresses the importance of learning to swim all year round. Several intensive swim programs will run throughout the holidays as well as a family swim time open to children outside the centre. Each term break, a five day program runs in the second week in the mornings and in January there are three weeks of programs each weekday. Lessons are 40 minutes each and are a great boost to skill development but should be seen as an extra to weekly swimming lessons throughout the year. “While we do not have the distractions of water slides, large buckets, aqua aerobics and public swimming at lesson times, we do offer family swim time on Friday nights from 5:00pm-7:30pm during the term and 1:00pm-4:00pm each weekday during the holiday breaks,” Debbie says. Access to learning to swim shouldn’t be a problem, and the Geelong Aquatic Centre is making sure kids of all abilities and levels are able to have the experience to learn to swim—holiday season or not.

SECURITY FILM

ANTI-GRAFFITI FILM

Window Security film is a very clear, high impact resistant laminate and when applied to your windows, it creates an invisible barrier that prevents criminals from entering your home or work place.

The film itself has many possible uses from glass walls of office buildings, to bus shelters or other valuable assets highly visible to the public.

The film has a strong and flexible elasticity to it that bonds extremely well to the window glass.

With glass surfaces such as bus windows and shopfronts becoming more frequently targeted by vandals, the need for antigraffiti window film is increasing and we have met this demand with this high performance film designed to prevent surface damage from vandalism such as scratches, texta and graffiti.

This allows it to hold the glass firmly together inside its frame, even after it has been cracked or shattered from multiple strikes or blows being impacted against it. Although continuous forceful strikes made against the glass, the window film will eventually start to breakdown and the glass will separate from its frame. Even though the film will eventually fail, criminals will have no interest in taking the time to defeat it.

One of the key ingredients in this type of protective coating is that for the majority of cases the vandals don’t even know the film is there and will not attempt to peel it off and scratch the underlying glass surface.

They are not only deterred by the amount of time it takes to break through, but also the amount of noise it takes to gain entry to your premises. Anti-Graffiti Film is a specially designed film, almost invisible once installed, providing a removable, sacrificial surface that can reduce or eliminate the need for expensive glass or other surface replacement. A single replacement of just one window can easily exceed ten or twenty times the cost of film installation. Anti-Graffiti films are ideal for use on shopfronts where street crime is a problem.

WATHAURONG GLASS In a family home in Bellbrae, set against a wall in the kitchen is a splashback by Wathaurong Glass. With kangaroo prints, wind motifs and a Gathering motif, this tells the story of the family, through Indigenous art, that live day-to-day, using the kitchen to cook breakfast every morning.

ARTICLE BY: AMANDA SHERRING PHOTOS: SUPPLIED

“This customer was looking for a pattern and a texture [on their splashback] and I said, ‘We can tell your story in glass, if you like?’,” says Mark Edwards, Manager of Wathaurong Glass. And that he did. Beyond the business’ work with Aboriginal motifs, what Wathaurong Glass really specialise in, is creating a truly unique addition to your home. With each piece of work custom-made to your design suggestions, it’s simple assurance your home will have something genuinely exclusive. “We’re completely and utterly unique,” Mark says. “You’re getting something with character, with texture and design for that matter. At the end of the day what we do is bespoke. It’s individualised and customised.” With everything designed in-house, splashbacks have seen designs of butterflies and lizards grace their surfaces with much more on offer in addition to the Indigenous themes the business specialises in. But the real appeal of glass used in the kitchen and bathroom is its cost-effectiveness and ease to clean. With no lines and its nonporous texture, it means dirt and grime doesn’t adhere to grout or the edges of tiles.

For the past 20 plus years, Mark has been educating customers on the benefits of glass and its use in the home and Wathaurong Glass has been a leader of bespoke design during this time. “We came into business at a really ripe time and we’ve been in business for 20 years, we’re probably one of the forefront movers in custom design kiln formed glass domestically, and probably the leader in the commercial sector too,” he says. Whether it’s Indigenous art or a simple texture, Mark sees the beauty in every custom glass design and is happy to rise to the challenge of a unique design.

CARPET HOUSE

Leading the way for 45 years

Now more than ever homeowners are dedicating additional time in selecting the colour palettes and textures that make up the essence of their home. One of the biggest decisions when building or renovating is what’s beneath your feet. Trends in flooring have moved from simple carpets and vinyl through to the detailed floorboards we’re seeing today—and Carpet House has been there for all of it. Originating in 1973 as Geelong’s home for all things carpet, the business has evolved throughout its impressive 45 year existence to stock an extensive range of flooring options including carpets, rugs, laminate, luxury vinyl planks and timber flooring. With wood details a sought-after feature of modern day homes, Carpet House jumped ahead of the trend and sourced some of the finest quality, versatile and original timber flooring options in Geelong. Carpet House has unique and exclusive hard flooring ranges featuring selections from Grand Oak Flooring, Hickory Impressions, Regency Hardwood and Regency Hybrid Advanced, with over 30 different finishes and colours to select from to fit into your home. 106 ONPAKO

A standout of the display is the Hickory Impressions series, which celebrates the texture and grain of wood. Through touch and closer inspection this variety serves as one of the most realistic timber flooring options available in town. A popular range also comes from the Australian Species Variety of the Spotted Gum and Blackbutt, available through Australian Select Timbers. “The Australian species is always popular because of the Spotted Gum,” Carpet House owner Brendan Lewtas says. “People are also looking for things that are a little bit more coastal…Some people like a feature with a lot of definition and a lot of character and you can get that with the Hickory.” For those looking for a more affordable alternative of enhancing their home interior with wood texture, Brendan recommends clients look at the new technology available in vinyl. Referred to as luxury vinyl planks, this LooseLay range is produced by Karndean Design Flooring and is perfect for those who want the earthiness provided with timber flooring minus the cost. “Vinyl planks is a hugely growing area,” Brendan says. “They look realistic and people will come in and think that it’s a timber floor.”

“People hear the word vinyl and think ‘I can’t have that in my house’, but it’s actually really practical.”

“It’s a big decision these days and people want to work with other people and get a lot of input in their choices,” he says.

As Brendan explains, luxury vinyl planks are faster and easier to fit, easy and economical to repair, require little or no adhesive and are 100% recyclable. Its biggest appeal of course is the quality finish at a minimal price.

“There’s a lot of choice, we often say it’d be easier if there was less to choose from,” he adds with a smile.

With the increase of timber floorboards throughout the home, it’s meant there’s been a shift in rug sizes—the larger, the better. “Lots of people are buying bigger rugs these days. The 1.6m by 2.3m were standard, but they’re almost too small now because people have a lot of timber flooring,” Brendan says. “They need very big rugs to fill a space, where traditionally it’s been carpet in those areas.”

Regardless of how long a homeowner takes to piece together the flooring elements of their home, Brendan’s main passion is assuring quality flooring that stands the test of time once it’s installed. A joy also comes from seeing the quality product represented in award-winning Malishev homes and others throughout the region. “We’re long term, we don’t sell things that are cheap and nasty and that will let people down. We’d rather sell people flooring that’s going to last and look good for a long period of time,” Brendan says.

Rugs serve as the easiest means to add some warmth to a room as well as a less permanent method of making a bold statement within a space. If you’re unable to find something to fit your space in store or if it’s not quite the right dimensions for what you’re after, rugs can also be custom-made by Carpet House. While there is a trend towards timber flooring, carpet is still favourable for bedrooms to maintain the luxury and cosiness of such a personal space. “A lot of people will still have carpet in the living zones or the bedrooms, but they’ll have a bigger living area and kitchen that will flow through with timber flooring,” Brendan says.

The emphasis on texture is seen in carpets as well, with homeowners making bold decisions in the colours, weaves and fabrics that feature in their homes. “A lot of people are coming in and buying more textured carpets because they want something more interesting on the floor,” Brendan says. “And there’s not as much carpet as there used to be in homes so they’re feeling like they can do something a bit different with it.” Something as simple as the choice of weave in your carpet can help add more interest to a room, all while maintaining the longevity of the product selected. What many clients might not realise is the continued strength for carpet manufacturing within Victoria. While the wool for the product comes from New Zealand, most of the range stocked at Carpet House is made in the state. With so much on display in the large Newtown-based showroom, Brendan realises that time is an important factor when making decisions. 108 ONPAKO

INTERIOR TRENDS FOR 2019 We welcome the other side of the world with new amazing labels, lots of luxe, texture, burnt velvets, linens and crewelwork (a surface embroidery using wool) that will stop the traffic. Schumacher is a great American brand that expands its ranges from textiles to wallpapers, absolutely worth coming in and viewing. James Malone is a worldwide collection, the definition in linens and playful textures plus saturation of colour is amazing and proud to hold its place in Lane Kellys Showroom. Window furnishings of plush velvet take a stand. Trimmings of wonderful braids and tassels are not just used on drapes or sheers but in the upholstery area as well. It’s going to bring textiles, window furnishings and design to another level. Pantone colours are looking amazing with inspiration from a fetish food direction that will be trending. Sounds very yummy! And again, it will be interesting as to how our creative industry digests this!!!! HOT SUMMERS Hot summer days are ahead, time to think about keeping cool. External shading provided by awnings reduces heat transfer through windows by up to 90 per cent. There are many products available however, LK will have this covered with our leading brands. These exterior products are advancing and providing home enhancement with even more beautiful ranges being introduced. So, what are the trends for external? They’re moving away from the rounded shapes that we’ve seen over time to more square shapes and cleaner lines with awning colours being co-ordinated with consumers’ homes in Colorbond colourways. A NIGHT OUT AT THE COMO Recently team LK were invited to a night out by our leading suppliers. The night was a celebration, showcasing interior design that captivates the form of creativity. Each space was designed by a team of interior designers who reimagined the rooms of Como House. This event was a success and extremely enjoyable in delivering and showcasing the next generation of designers, displaying their talent with great historical values to Como House. The exhibition reflected a certain relationship achieved through the trained and creative eye of these designers and their ability to mix a beautiful space with traditional accents. It was a wonderful evening and opportunity to meet international designers but most of all a fantastic chance to come together with our amazing suppliers who we value hugely in the textile world. 112 ONPAKO

Extraordinary modern designs, colourful ink print fabrics with a three-dimensional effect. For the world of Tiles three-dimensional designs are extremely on-trend at the moment. We are so excited to see the forms and depth, texture and colour that our manufacturers are producing. Timber, stone and terrazzo 3D printed wallpaper in bathrooms is amazing…. Do yourself a favour and go out and explore the possibilities. Make a note: It’s rolling back to the eighteenth century; a very strong influence conveys warm flair portraying the essential term of design and colour, just like poetry and art. Noted Pantone: Solid metallic will be the classic staple for all home interior treatments. Also, the eye will not be able to avoid neutrals, anything iridescent, pearly pearls, light filtering, metallic shimmers or translucents. One of these is a must have in your home. NEW - Romantic and hot pepper reds for your home decoration and design in 2019. PANTONE - Seventy-two new colours in total have been selected. They are sure to be seen through home interiors in 2019. The main two colour palettes are cravings and classico, total opposites on the colour spectrum. CRAVINGS - The shades in cravings are supposed to tempt the eye as well as the taste buds with spicy reds, sweet flamingo orange and rich purples. Allusions to fetish foods such as peppers and chocolate are softened by the warmth of a neutral cappuccino shade with the cooling respite of a grassy green shade. Think bright red statement furniture and all the goodness of maximalist joy. CLASSICO - The tones of classico present more refined with acknowledgement to basic style principles. This is the palette where ‘swan white’ and shades of camel pair perfectly with deep teals, grey flannels, burgundy reds and caviar blacks.
