No, we’re not talking about the popular grain served with beans or wrapped in seaweed, but rather the injury treatment routine of rest, ice, compression, elevation—aka, RICE. Any athlete, regardless of sport, gender or age, will inevitably experience some type of injury, be it minor or major. I know from experience that having an injury can be difficult to accept. Most athletes eat, sleep and breathe their sport, and while we are taught to listen to our bodies, we mostly train and compete with our hearts. So while our body may be telling us to rest after an injury, we sometimes find ourselves pushing forward too hard, too soon. It’s not easy stepping away from doing the thing you are most passionate about, the thing that makes you feel happy, alive and energetic. The problem with ignoring RICE is that it could lead to a more serious injury, even longer recovery, and diminished sport performance, which can be disappointing and frustrating. I suggest forming a supportive network of doctors, friends and family that you trust to act as your voice of reason during times of injury. Not only is this network important in keeping you from further injury but also in keeping your spirits high and positive. Also, talk to a doctor about alternative exercises or sports that can be performed during your recovery. Some sports come with higher risks for injury—and no one knows this better than adventure rider Jesse Johnson of Westfield Yamaha Powersports. Be sure to check out his story on page 18!

New Cosmetic and Health–Improving Treatments
I
n addition to having one of the largest and most contemporary cosmetic and laser centers in the Midwest, Chernoff Cosmetic Surgeons are proud to bring exciting research, new cosmetic and healthimproving treatments to Indianapolis. Improving Migraine Symptoms and Triggers A minimally invasive surgical treatment for migraine headaches is growing in popularity with my patients. I have treated hundreds of patients who suffer from migraine headaches with Botox, which was FDA approved for this purpose several years ago. Now, patients can undergo a one-hour procedure, which meticulously releases pressure on selected nerves responsible for the propagation of migraine headaches. Both therapies work by deactivating specific nerves that trigger muscle contractions causing the painful headache. Patients notice decreased severity and frequency of migraines from the treatment. Additionally, patients experience relief from other migraine triggers and problems, including being bothered by light and noise, difficulty concentrating, blurring vision and drooping eyelids. This treatment can also improve the appearance of droopy eyebrows. Fat Injections for Cosmetic and Health Improvement For years, I have been successfully using a patient’s own fat to add volume, fill lines,

and improve skin tone, texture and quality. Now, as a member of the Investigational Cell Surgical Research Network, I am studying health benefits of a patient’s own fat to improve a variety of conditions. The process uses the Stromal Vascular Fraction (SVF) containing adult stem cells that naturally occur in our own fat. This investigational research is part of the California Stem Cell Treatment Center’s proprietary protocol. As a result of new research, I am offering patients another new purpose for fat. This treatment helps patients with Reynaud’s disease to improve blood flow and circulation to their hands and feet. Reynaud’s causes excessively reduced blood flow in the fingers, toes, and occasionally other areas, creating pain and other complications. This new procedure involves injecting a small amount of your own fat into areas of the hands and feet. Since your own fat is rich in stem cells, the tissue regenerates and heals, and patients notice a dramatic improvement in circulation as well as the appearance of the hands.

Exciting new research offers new hope for migraine sufferers—and new uses for your body’s own fat cells!

The Window to Your Cellular Age Continuing life depends on the healthy condition of each of the billions of cells in the body.
Are you saying to yourself: “What’s happening inside?”
W
e all know our birthday and enjoy celebrating the event— at least through our twenties or so. At some point, adding birthdays becomes something we don’t want to think about as the reality sets in that we are truly aging. For those who enjoy decades of good health, age may not be a big concern. But how many of us wonder what’s happening inside, and if we’re in better health than our age indicates? These are legitimate questions, and the older we get, the more relevant they become. Continuing life depends on the healthy condition of each of the billions of cells in the body. Within each cell, every chromosome has genetic material at the tip known as the “telomere.” The primary function of the telomere is to prevent chromosomal “fraying” when the cell replicates. With each replication (new cell creation) the telomere shortens (frays); eventually the cell stops dividing and will ultimately die—a normal biological process. It’s called “aging.” Average life expectancy depends on a variety of factors, and one of those is the health (length) of our telomeres. In addition to what we’re given (our biological gift), what we do to maintain good health also impacts how long we’ll live. There are many things we can do to best use what we’re given, but in the end, we will not live forever. Medical research and scientific discoveries have proven there can be a significant difference between our actual age and our cellular age. Further advancements have
10
ACTIVELI FEGUI DE . COM
created a test whereby the length of the telomere can be measured. The result of this test helps to determine remaining life expectancy. Does this mean we can forecast our impending death? Not exactly. It simply means that a test is available that provides an accurate window into our cellular age. Age-adjusted telomere length is the best method to date of assessing biological age using structural analysis of chromosomal change in the telomere. Serial evaluation of the telomere length is an indicator of how rapidly one ages relative to the normal population. Therapies directed at slowing the loss of telomere length may slow aging and age related diseases. We all know about the negative effects of stress. In addition to the stress we’re all familiar with, scientists also have known about oxidative stress for decades. Oxidative stress is caused by the presence of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which the cell is unable to counterbalance. The result is damage to one or more biomolecules, including DNA, RNA, proteins and lipids. Further, oxidative stress has been implicated as the primary cause of telomere deterioration. Eliminating oxidative stress can greatly increase the life expectancy of the telomeres and thus slow the process of aging. While we know the telomere is a key component to longer life, there is no magic pill in a bottle to increase its length. In recent years,
/September 2014
ongoing studies have confirmed that proper nutrition (a good diet), an active lifestyle (exercise), quality sleep and less stress can help maintain a younger telomere. Specifically, studies have linked longer telomeres with levels of vitamin E, vitamin C, vitamin D, omega-3 fatty acids and the antioxidant resveratrol. In addition, homocysteine levels have been inversely associated with telomere length, suggesting that reducing homocysteine via folate and vitamin B supplementation may decrease the rate of telomere loss. Similarly, conditions such as cardiovascular disease, insulin resistance, diabetes, hypertension, atherosclerosis and even dementia affect telomere length. Correcting subclinical nutritional deficiencies that may contribute to such diseases is critical to telomere maintenance. In general, prevention of damage is far better than trying to create a cure. When the telomere is finally gone, there is little hope that it can be quickly recreated. The decision to take the test and determine your cellular health becomes a personal choice. It’s always better to know the facts and be proactive in doing everything possible to improve it. As scientific research continues, it’s realistic to believe advances could find a way to extend telomere life. Meanwhile, we can either just look at the calendar to verify our years—or we can open the window and look at our cellular age.

I’ve had back pain off and on most of my life, not debilitating…that is, until about the age of 40. The pain eventually became unbearable. With a very demanding job and little time to focus on my health, I sought the help of a few doctors. This is when I discovered most doctors want to pat you on the hand and tell you to “learn to live with it!” Reality is…you have “lived with it” and if you weren’t at the breaking point you wouldn’t be in their office! I began to wonder if I could bear to live the rest of my life in this much pain…was it possible or even worth it? Dr. Hall is unaware but he probably saved my life…I was very close to giving up. After the first appointment at Midwest Pain & Spine, I knew I was somewhere special. Suddenly there was hope, and an actual plan! Dr. Hall went straight to work to find the source of the pain, which actually turned out to be a birth deformity. He discovered the source of pain that no other doctor ever took the time to. Then Dr. Hall worked with me to find the most effective treatment for my particular spine issues. Now my pain is managed. I still work too hard, but now I’m not miserable…plus I live a more active lifestyle, which is a much unexpected blessing. Thanks, Dr. Hall and wonderful staff, for giving me my life back! —Pamela Z., Fishers

Spinach & Mushroom Stuffed Eggplant
Preparation 1. Heat oven to 400°F. Bring a large pan of water to the boil, add the eggplant halves and cook for 4-5 minutes. Drain well and pat dry with kitchen paper. 2. Place the eggplants on a baking tray, brush with 1 tbsp. of the olive oil and cook for 20-25 minutes until tender and golden. Scoop out the flesh (leaving about half an inch of flesh attached to the skin), and then roughly chop. 3. Meanwhile, heat remaining oil in a large frying pan, then cook the onion and garlic for 4-5 minutes until the onion has softened. Add the eggplant flesh to the pan and fry for a few minutes. Add the mushrooms, and cook for about 5 minutes until browned and tender. Add the spinach and cook for 3-4 minutes until wilted, stirring frequently.
Ingredients • 2 medium eggplants, halved lengthways • 2 tbsp. olive oil • 1 small onion, finely chopped • 2 garlic cloves, crushed • 3 cups mushrooms, sliced • 1 bunch fresh spinach, chopped • ½ cup vegetarian parmesan-style cheese, grated • 6 tbsp. fromage frais • 3 tbsp. fresh white breadcrumbs • Grated zest of 1 lemon • ¼ cup pine nuts, toasted • 2 tbsp. chopped fresh parsley
Eggplants, also known as aubergines, are an excellent source of dietary fiber. They are also a good source of vitamins B1 and B6 and potassium. In addition, they are high in levels of copper, magnesium and manganese.
Full of vitamins, minerals and dietary fiber, and with the potential to lower cholesterol and help manage weight, eggplants are a great choice for salads, stews and beyond.

After all, it isn’t just adults that deal with stress. Our children deal with pressure from bullies at school, an overload of homework, and/or the pressure of a competitive sport. Now that school is back in session, I thought it would be appropriate for us parents to take a deeper look into the different varieties of yoga and see if it is something that will help our children mentally, physically and emotionally.

ASK THE EXPERTS Asking the right questions at the supermarket can make all the difference and enjoy its rich taste with no issues or concerns. Cooking pork to 140 degrees internal temperature is ideal, as after it rests from the oven or grill, the internal temperature will rise to 145 degrees—the USDA-recommended temperature.
Don’t be afraid to ask!
Q:At the grocery, I bought a great tasting steak. The next week I bought the same steak and it tasted totally different. Why?
Q:How do I determine the
freshness and quality of my seafood purchases? A: When it comes to freshness and seafood, “the nose knows.” Fresh seafood should smell clean, like a fresh cut cucumber or a salty ocean breeze. It should never smell like fish or ammonia. Whole fish should have bright clear eyes and deep red gills. When it comes to quality, you need to trust your purveyor. All seafood should display their country of origin and if they were wild caught or farm raised. In addition, a purveyor should be able to tell you when the fish was caught or harvested and the method of catch. (Unfavorable methods include long lining or dredging; sustainable methods include line or troll catching.) Finally, your purveyor should be able to openly discuss guidelines issued by Seafood Watch and the Marine Stewardship Council and how they are applied to their wholesale seafood purchase.
16
ACTIVELI FEGUI DE . COM
Q:Why is all the pork I cook dry and bland tasting and never tender?
A: It has to do with the type of pork you purchase and how you cook it. In an effort to make pork “the other white meat,” many of the characteristics that make pork great tasting were lost. The hogs raised for that purpose produce meat with a “basic” pH instead of a natural slightly “acidic” pH. The result is a lean, pale product that subsequently has to be injected with saline to give it any chance of retaining moisture during cooking. High-quality, never-injected fresh pork should be bright red in color. Like beef, it should have a good amount of internal fat marbling as well. Overcooking your pork is the number one reason why pork can be dry or tough. Unfortunately, back in the day it was required to cook pork to 160 degrees to make sure parasites that can reside on pork were killed. But today, through better feeding protocol, one can eat pink pork
/September 2014
A: The best indicator of potential flavor when it comes to steak is its internal fat content, or marbling. The USDA grades marbling in beef on a scale that moves from less to more—from Select, to Choice, to Prime. Yet within each grade are 300 points of further marbling grades. Inside the grade 0 to 100 is called Small; 101 to 200 is called Modest; and 201 to 300 is called Moderate. Grocers that sell Choice beef can buy Choice Small (basically Select meat) at a much cheaper price than a Choice Moderate steak. Yet to the consumer, the grocery can legally market both steaks simply as Choice. So, the steak you bought last week might truly be different than the one you bought this week. Bottom line? Buy steaks from butcher shops that buy only Choice Moderate to Prime Small beef to ensure a consistent eating experience!

magine riding your motorcycle fullthrottle on backwoods roads, sloshing your machine through rocky creeks— descending straight down a hill into a ravine and thinking to yourself halfway down that it might be too dangerous to keep going! But there’s no turning back. You’ve come this far and the adrenaline is running high—you do what you need to do to keep yourself on your bike, and keep your bike from tumbling out of control. “You get a visceral sensation,” says Jesse Johnson. “It’s so dynamic, and you’re constantly moving. You’re actually at one with your machine.” As General Manager of Westfield Powersports, Jesse Johnson knows a thing or two about motorcycles. Growing up in Littleton, Colorado, Jesse started racing dirt bikes at the tender age of 10; that led him into motorcycle racing. “I raced on and off until I was in my early twenties all over the Western half of the U.S.,” he says. “We traveled all over Colorado, to Little Sahara in Oklahoma, places in Texas, New Mexico and Wyoming.” Jesse’s life was all about racing. When there wasn’t a race to race in, Jesse’s father would take him and his friends out into the woods and trails on dirt bikes. “I hated it like the plague!” he jokes. Funny, especially considering that that the muddy, backwoods trails and climbs his father taught him to do against his will as a child are exactly what he’s doing on adventure bikes today! For a few years in his early to mid-twenties, Jesse raced bicycles as a Category 2 cyclist, and he has competed in his share of triathlons. But his latest obsession with adventure riding brings him back onto the motorcycle—in a whole new way. Jesse explains adventure motorcycle riding as basically a mix of on- and off-road riding. “It’s all about diversity of terrain,” he says. “Here in Indiana, you have a mix of dirt and gravel roads to ride on—rural
By Matthew Hume
roads that might have a stream or a creek.” He tells me the sport has grown massively in popularity over the past several years. “Unless you’re on a track, you can’t see a sport bike to its full potential, or you’re going to get a ticket!” Jesse laughs. “With adventure riding, the terrain is selflimiting, so you have the ability to push the envelope and realize both your and your machine’s true capacity.” Having grown up in Colorado, Jesse had always taken diversity of terrain for granted; when he first moved to Indiana, he wondered where in the world he would ever find a hill. It took the direction of seasoned Hoosier explorers Rick Dorfmeyer and Roy Garrett to figure out that within a few hours on a weekend morning, an adventure seeker can find himself—or herself— well into the backwoods, up a gravel road or down into a creek (with or without a paddle, as it were).
The School of Hard, Bumpy Rides “We had several adventure rides last year [at Westfield Powersports], and over those rides, we realized that very few people were experienced enough to confidently navigate a motorcycle over this type of terrain,” Jesse says. “Some have ridden their whole lives—maybe a Harley, and rode it from here to there, out to grab a bite to eat—but never really ridden a motorcycle.” Racing all those years out West equipped Jesse with a skill set for adventure riding—it’s what happens when you go from sand dunes to flat-track racing to motocross racing, if you want to survive. And he realized that lifelong cruisers haven’t acquired those skills. “If you just take it Point A to B, you can shift the gears and operate the clutch, but it doesn’t prepare you for being able to maneuver when I say, ‘Hey, there’s a creek here! We need to cross it and get up the hill on the other side!’” So Jesse and

and confident in their ability. It’s proof you can teach an ol’ dog new tricks!” Jesse talks about motorcycle riding in an almost spiritual way. “It’s one thing to ride on the highway and get worn out or windburned,” he says, “but it’s something altogether different when your arms get pumped up, your hands cramp and your legs are exhausted because you’ve been riding over washboards the past four hours, uphill and downhill and through rivers and valleys. It’s like you can’t tell where your body ends and the machine begins.”
Appealing to the Sophisticated Rider Adventure riding packs a punch; but riding a motorcycle doesn’t have to be all about dirt and sweat, right? “This year, we’re set to launch another school called Vino Moto,” Jesse tells me. Inspired by wine-and-canvas events, Vino Moto is slated to be a women’s riding school and wine tasting. (Not at the same time, of course, Jesse assured me.) “We’re going to take our students out and teach them an activity, and then afterwards we’ll go to Oliver Winery for a group tasting,” he says. “It’s a daylong activity you can do with your girlfriends.” It’s more than a social experience, Jesse believes. “Motorcycle riding is like skydiving—you don’t need to do it every day, but once you do, you feel like, ‘If I can do this, I can do anything.’”
the gang at Westfield Powersports decided those lifelong cruisers needed some more formal education. “This year we started an Adventure School,” Jesse tells me. “What we aim to do is empower people with the tools they need to ride safely within their regular day-to-day commute, and then confidently go off-road.” And so, this past May, Jesse recruited a handful of off-road seasoned instructors to teach a group of 40- and 50-something men how to ride off-road—using the same bikes and curriculum taught to youth off-roaders. “By using miniature bikes, and a fairly rudimentary curriculum, we were able to break things down to the fundamentals and build their confidence,” Jesse explains. “The sensation you get on gravel at 40 and 50 mph is closer to what you’d feel at 100 mph on the highway, so a solid understanding of the fundamentals is key when you encounter these different terrains.” Once the Adventure School students mastered the basics on small bikes (usually intended for child riders), they graduated to their adventure bikes to have some real fun.
remarks excitedly. “It’s awesome to see them go in a few short hours from one place to the other. Their first ride, they might be at the back of the ride—nervous, tiptoeing through everything and not adapting to the cycle. Two rides later—or after taking the school—they’re in the heart of the adventure, trying to figure how to advance,
“These guys are in their 40s, 50s and 60s—they’re engineers and doctors and managers—and they’re kids again!” Jesse

Or maybe you’re geared up and ready for Jesse’s next Adventure Riding School coming up on October 5. Either way you go, you’re bound to get your motor running and your heart pumping. That’s just how it is in the sweaty, dirty, adrenaline-pumped world of adventure motorcycle riding.

SPINE Pain In
my last article, I talked a little about the use of regenerative medicine in the treatment of low back pain. Today, we will go into spine pain in more detail. This pertains to pain in the low back, mid back and the neck. If you suffer from low back pain, your spinal discs are the likely culprit.
T
he spinal disc is responsible for most low back pain, and we will concentrate on it here. The disc is made up of a strong outer wall, the annulus, and a gel-like center, the nucleus. It is located between the vertebral bodies. The outer annulus allows strength and motion. The inner gel contains the cells that repair the disc wall as it breaks down and strong chemicals that are very irritating if they get outside the disc. Degenerative disc disease is caused in most, if not all cases, by a genetic abnormality where the amino acid building block sequence is abnormal. This causes the disc wall to break down faster than the disc cells can repair it, leading to cracks, fissures and tears. The central gel material can protrude into and through these cracks and tears. The chemicals in the gel can irritate the ligaments and nerves, causing buttock and leg pain. The tear itself can be a source of pain, and there can also be mechanical pressure on the nerves, causing leg pain.

Treating Spinal Disc Pain
longer than chondroitin and glucosamine injections. The most powerful treatment for degenerative disc disease is the injection of stem cells into the disc. In degenerative disc disease, the naturally occurring disc cells die off. The stem cells that are injected replace these cells. (See Part 1 of this series in the June issue of activelife Guide for more on how stem cells work.)
To treat the tears inside the disc, medications have to be placed inside the disc. Chondroitin and glucosamine are two of the chemicals that the disc cells use to repair the disc, and they can be injected into the disc. This usually works, but often has to be repeated frequently. This treatment produces a moderate amount of pain relief. More recently, platelet rich plasma (PRP) is being injected into the disc. Platelets are in blood and they stop bleeding, but they also initiate healing. The exact mechanism of action is not understood, but PRP injected into the disc usually works better and lasts
In PRP injections, blood is taken from the patient, and the platelets are concentrated before they are injected back into the patient on the same day. Stem cells can be harvested from either bone marrow or adipose tissue (fat); however, adipose tissue has 500 times the stem cells as bone marrow. As with PRP, stem cells must be harvested, concentrated but not cultured, and injected back into the same patient on the same day.
Placing steroid medication in the space around the disc (the epidural space) can reduce the chemical irritation that is due to the chemicals that have leaked outside the disc. If there is no chemical leakage, the epidural is not very helpful. Typically, the epidural steroid injections work well at first, then become less effective.

Start by trying to work to the top of the pyramid; when this becomes easy, try coming back down!
How to perform the exercises:
/Squats • Stand tall with your feet shoulder-width apart and straight. Distribute weight over the center of your foot. • Squeeze your bottom and brace your core; reach your hamstrings back. • Lower yourself down by bending your knees while keeping your shins vertical (knees behind the toes). • Return to standing.
/ A
Side Plank Dips with Hip Abduction • Perform a modified side plank, bending your knees 90 degrees; straighten your top leg. • Keep your elbow under your shoulder and head in line with your body. • Press into your forearm and lift your hips off the ground.
B
• Raiser your top leg as high as you can; hold for 3 seconds. • Lower your leg, then your hips, without touching the ground, and then start again.

B
Power Jack • Begin with your knees slightly bent and arms by your side. • Explosively jump up, spreading your legs out while bringing your arms overhead with a clap.
A
• As you come back down, land softly with your knees bent and arms by your side.
/ Weighted Overhead Swing • Position feet shoulder-width apart, brace your core, and pull your shoulders back. • Drive your hamstrings back, hinging forward at the hips while bringing the weight between your legs. • Keep your head neutral, with your upper body angled at about 45 degrees. • Extend your hips completely to drive the arms and weight overhead, squeezing your glutes and shoulders, and bracing your core at the top of the swing.

B
/ Run • Before running, march in place and notice where the impact is on the foot. This is where you should be striking with each step (not on the heels or up on the toes). • Relax your shoulders and hands while running—pretend to be holding an egg in each hand. • Do not bend at the waist, but lean forward slightly at the ankles. • Run or walk at a pace that allows you to talk but not hold a conversation.

The 411 on Back Pain Although chiropractors treat more than just back pain, many patients seek chiropractic care for relief of this often debilitating condition. As a matter of fact, nearly 31 million Americans experience low back pain at any given time.
Oh, my aching back...
Lower back pain can be a debilitating condition. In fact, it’s the single leading cause of disability worldwide. Do all you can to prevent onset, but if low back pain becomes too much to bear, see your chiropractor.
Let’s take a look at some facts about back pain: • Experts estimate nearly 80% of people will experience some form of back pain during their lifetime. • Back pain is the second most common reason for visits to the doctor. • Half of all working Americans admit to having back pain sometime during the year, making it the leading cause for missed work. • Americans spend $50 billion each and every year due to back pain. • Lower back pain is the single leading cause of disability worldwide.
What causes back pain? The two main causes for back pain we see walk into our clinic are poor posture and de-conditioning—that is, having a sedentary lifestyle. The back is an intricate and complicated set of bones, joints, ligaments and muscles. Any one of these structures can be injured due to posture or sitting too much, leading to back pain.
28
ACTIVELI FEGUI DE . COM
Sometimes just the tiniest movement can cause extreme back pain—something as slight as picking up a pencil or a golf ball. It may seem simple, but chances are that injury may have been building over time.
How can you prevent back pain or an injury? Set up your computer workstation so your body is directly in front of your monitor and keyboard. Sit all the way back in your chair and keep your neck and back in a neutral posture. Take frequent breaks to get up and walk around; even lightly stretch if you need to. Our bodies are made to move—we are not made to sit all day and night. Get up and move! I tell patients the best way to start moving is with a simple walking program. The most important thing is that you are moving your joints and muscles every day. The more you move and avoid bad posture, the better you will feel overall. Visit a chiropractor to check for loss of joint motion or restrictions in the spine that

could limit your range of motion and cause pain.
What is chiropractic? Chiropractic works to improve function and motion of the spinal joints and nervous system. This increase in function will naturally reduce pain. When the spinal joints are fixated or locked in position, it causes the body to compensate. That causes pain, muscle spasm and irritation of the affected segment. You see, spinal joints are made to move, protect the spinal cord and absorb shock. When a segment is functioning poorly it can affect anything up or down the kinetic chain. A chiropractor can diagnose your spinal condition through palpation of the spine or plain film x-rays. Many doctors of chiropractic are now using palpation to find areas of dysfunction in the spine as opposed to viewing the spine statically on an x-ray. At The Joint in Carmel we focus on pain relief leading to wellness as the key to living a back pain free life.

Bring Back Your Vibrant Face! There’s no denying it: To live is to age. As this summer comes to an end, consider taking steps to reverse those signs of aging! The skin ages in two ways: intrinsic and extrinsic. Intrinsic aging is caused by genetic traits. Extrinsic aging, on the other hand, is a result of environmental factors such as sun exposure, smoking, gravity, sleeping positions and stress. Intrinsic aging can begin in our early 20s but may not become visible until our 30s. For this reason, we believe physician supervised skincare should start as early as possible. The etiology of intrinsic aging is the slowing of collagen production and a decrease in the function of elastin. Dead skin cells don’t shed as quickly, and new skin cells don’t develop as plentifully. The results are fine lines, thin transparent skin, dry itchy skin, the inability to sweat for cooling and moisturizing the skin, and unwanted hair. Extrinsic aging is usually the result of multiple factors working in conjunction to prematurely age the skin. Photoaging yields age spots, freckles, spider veins, rough leathery skin, wrinkles and dark patchy spots (actinic keratosis). Most importantly, skin cancer can be traced to sun exposure.
Many changes can be reversed nonsurgically with injectable fillers or a patient’s own fat.
But there is exciting news! Many of the deeper changes can be reversed nonsurgically with injectable fillers such as Sculptra, Voluma XC, Juvaderm, Restylane, or even a patient’s own fat (known as a stem-cell face-lift).
F
acial aging occurs as a result of changes in the skin and changes in the deeper soft tissue. As we age, we lose volume within the deeper structures of the face, and this leads to a flattening of the upper and mid face. The underlying soft tissues droop and no longer have the beautiful oval look of youth. Instead, the face becomes square and “saggy.”

Fall is a great time to reverse some of the aging process. A consultation with a cosmetic surgeon can provide options for restoring loss of volume and develop a skin health regimen to help rejuvenate and restore healthy skin. Don’t trust your face to someone behind a counter in a department store. Seek advice from your physician. All regimens should include medical-grade growth factor products available only in medical offices: prescription retinoids, antioxidants, a medical skin lightener/ brightener, a good moisturizer, and most importantly, a sunscreen of no less than 30 SPF. The program specifics can be prescribed by your physician. Consultations for your facial needs are complimentary in our office.
