Now that we are two weeks into the New Year, how’s it going? Are you making progress on your New Year’s resolutions, or is there a lot of frustration? The fact is, many resolutions are broken—and good intentions fall off quickly. Research shows just a small percentage of those who establish New Year’s resolutions are successful in accomplishing them. There are many factors impacting our ability to be successful, and there are ways you can combat any obstacles you encounter.

Kelly Masterson, in her Bar Method online bio, refers to herself as a former “runner wanna-be.” Before bellying up to the barre in area studios, and falling so deeply in love with barre exercise that she eventually opened Indiana’s first Bar Method location, Kelly gave her all to running. “I never loved to run,” she says, “but my husband is a big runner, and we both thought it was a great way to be active together.” When your husband runs 7-minute miles and you’re just starting out, however, what sounds good in theory turns out not be so practical. “I had a huge group of friends to run with, and that made it fun,” she says. “Over time, we worked up from 3 miles, to 5, to 10-mile runs.” Eventually, having ramped themselves up to marathon distance, things got a little crazy (in my humble opinion). “We would get up at 2:30 in the morning to run 26 miles, and we’d be home before our kids went to school or our husbands got up,” Kelly explains. Dedicated yes. But passionate? Read between the lines when Kelly says she never did feel that “runner’s high.” And in addition to her general lack of enthusiasm for running, the sustained impact began to wear on her, leading Kelly to suffer injuries in both full marathons she ran. Not surprisingly, she smilingly admits, “The day I gave up running was the happiest day ever.” A CTIV E LIF E MAGAZINE .COM
Kelly endured a long and winding road to discovering a workout that worked for her. She tells me that boot camp style workouts, interval training, running, and other popular forms of exercise just never seemed to hit home for her. And then she discovered the barre. “I loved it from the very first class I took,” Kelly says. “It’s the first exercise routine I found where you work every muscle in the course of an hour-long class, and you feel the difference afterwards. Running, I had to run 10 miles to get that.” A one-hour session at Bar Method, Kelly says, hits every part of the body with isometric strength training, stretching, and high-rep, small rangeof-motion movements. (These include “all those lovely areas women want to tone,” Kelly adds.)
ALL ABOUT THE BARRE
OK, great, but what is barre fitness, and how does Bar Method fit into the mix? In short, the barre routines found today in Bar Method and other barre studios originated from a method created in the middle of the 20th century by German dancer Lottie Berk. Ms. Berk’s method drew from ballet, yoga and Pilates as a low-impact way to strengthen spine and core. Over time, that method grew to meet a variety of fitness needs, from strength and endurance, to sculpting, weight loss and overall flexibility. When Burr Leonard, founder of Bar Method and former student of Lottie Berk, began teaching, Kelly explains that some of her clients complained about discomfort in some of the positions. “This led Burr to enlist physical therapists for consultation,” Kelly says, and she tells me that all Bar Method studios still use a team of physical therapists to ensure the safety of their routines. When you hear “barre fitness,” especially if you have a dance background, your mind likely travels to the ballet barre. But while a barre is used in the routines, and though many of the positions are ballet inspired, the sessions are not about dance at all. “I didn’t grow up dancing,” Kelly tells me, and she assures readers that no background in dance is necessary. “That’s the beauty of this—it’s accessible to all ages and levels of fitness.” And genders, for that matter. Bar Method is open to all. True, barre routines don’t approach the overall intensity of a CrossFit class, and they don’t use heavy weights in their exercises, but Kelly says that a class at Bar Method is great for cross-training. “My husband runs marathons,” she says, “and he finds it to be a great cross-training tool for him. We do a lot of stretching, and when you run, you need that stretching that Bar Method provides. Those small movements are intense—you’re strengthening a different way than your normal interval training or other exercises.”

Kelly recalls how she first got started with the Bar Method IndianapolisCarmel, Indiana’s first Bar Method location. “I’d only been taking barre classes for a year or so, but I absolutely loved it. I was at lunch with a friend who told me I should check out the Bar Method. Well, we didn’t have an Indiana studio at that time, and the entrepreneurial side of me said, ‘I need to do this!’ So I ordered some of their DVDs and told my husband I wanted to open a studio. He thought I was crazy! It’s true, I can be impulsive, and so he thought I’d let go of this given some time. But this time I meant it, and after three months of not letting go, he gave in.”

MICROMOVEMENTS, TRANSFORMATIVE POWER
For Kelly, and for her loyal clients, Bar Method is so much more than a workout. In fact, Kelly sees the work she does as a means of empowering the women who visit her studio. “It’s so inspiring for me to see my clients transform,” she says. “We have women who come in and say, ‘I haven’t worked out for 7 years,’ and it’s so gratifying to see how they change from the outside in—they become confident and strong, inside and out.” Kelly understands for herself, too, the changes that come from dedication to the barre. “I’m tighter, leaner, and strong!” she says. And she stands up taller, too. Studies have shown that a more erect posture can lead to higher levels of confidence, and Kelly sees this as another ingredient in the empowerment that Bar Method brings. “When you go to a class that really focuses on strength and posture, you start to stand up taller wherever you go. My posture is so much better. Bar Method has made me—and so many others— feel strong.”

THE WOMAN BEHIND THE BARRE
Kelly typically teaches 5 classes a week, but even when she’s not teaching, Bar Method guests will likely find her at the desk or running to-and-fro around the studio. “I really like working the desk, or sitting on the couch talking to clients, because it gives me a chance to connect to everyone,” she says. Yet another benefit of the studio—community building. “I’ve had the opportunity to meet so many women I wouldn’t have known otherwise,” Kelly says, from other strong moms, to businesswomen, to the 60-year-old who never misses a week. But when I ask Kelly what defines her, businesswoman takes a back

Of all her accomplishments so far, Kelly is most proud, personally, of the children she’s raising. “My kids seem to be on track to be good citizens and productive people,” she says, although she adds, smiling, “they’re young, yet.” But she counts bringing the Bar Method to central Indiana as her greatest professional work. “People will say, ‘good for you,’ for opening the business, but for me, it wasn’t an option,”
