Microneedling The Hottest Skincare Trend By: Lauren Mroz, Aesthetician

ave you t r i e d everything to get rid of your acne scaring, fine lines and wrinkles? What about sun spots or even stretch marks? Here at Ageless Center Indianapolis we offer many customized treatments to give your skin exactly what it is craving. Even better, you will be able to absorb 80% more of products due to our Microneedling procedure. What Is Microneedling; how does it work? Microneedling is a procedure that uses fine needles to puncture the skin and create a controlled injury in order to rejuvenate the skin. It can be used to treat fine lines and wrinkles, acne and body scaring, stretch marks, skin hydration, mild

non-pustular rosacea, age spots, skin laxity and pigmentation. This specific treatment causes micro trauma to the upper layer of the dermis which is the leading cause of creation of collagen and elastin. The needles stimulate collagen by triggering the healing cascade with release of chemical mediators. This promotes collagen remodeling. The treatment then allows for easy entry of skin care products. Miconeedling leaves epidermis intact so there is much less inflammation which means much less down time. Is it safe for all skin types; can it be done for everyone? Yes, Microneedling is safe for all skin types and colors. There are no risk of post inflammatory hyper-pigmentation. After the procedure, the skin may be red and flushed in appearance. In the treatment area, skin tightness

and mild sensitivity may also be experienced. The treatment cannot be done on people with scleroderma, collagen vascular disease or cardiac abnormalities, scars less than 6 months old, and fillers used in the past 2-4 weeks. What happens during the treatment; how will I look after? A single use cartridge fine needle is attached to a pen shaped device that has an electric motor. There are controls that allow very accurate adjustments of the needle penetration depth and speed. As the machine glides over the area; the needles penetrate the skin triggering the release of healing chemical mediators and softening scar tissue. During the treatment it is likely the client will feel little to no pain due to the topical numbing cream applied. For the

MICROPIGMENTATION: A Useful Treatment
"I started losing my hair when I was 19, and was completely bald by 24" says John Hawkins of Indianapolis. "Never could I have imagined getting my hairline back without surgery!" John discovered a new process called Scalp Micro Pigmentation when looking on Instagram. As a professional bodybuilder, John had the opportunity five years ago to meet a fellow competitor from France who had his scalp pigmented. Unfortunately, it wasn’t until this year that he was able to find an artist locally offering this revolutionary service. Right here in Carmel, IN, Lash & Brow Design Co. has a trained Scalp Micro Pigmentation (SMP) artist offering the service. Jared Shaughnessy is a full-time firefighter with the Fishers Fire Department and is also saving men and women from alopecia, male pattern baldness, and scars. After seeing SMP on many people while in Europe, Jared Shaughnessy started looking
12
for training to be able to offer this service here in Indy. Not finding anyone in the US, Jared flew a trainer from Brussels and hired a translator. After twelve models and a week of intensive, hands on training, Jared is changing how people see themselves. "I had been looking for a way to restore confidence to men and women. Baldness can be an incredibly challenging aspect of one’s self confidence to overcome. After all, hair can make someone look much younger as well as improve their overall appearance."SMP is a process where a tattoo machine is used to create thousands of tiny, hair follicle dots all over the scalp. For a man without hair or with thinning hair, this creates the impression of a freshly shaved head. For women with thinning hair, the process darkens the scalp, making their hair look thicker and denser. Half of Jared’s clients are men wanting to restore the hairline that they have lost while the other half are women wanting the thick ABS O LUT E L IV IN GM AGAZ IN E .COM

look they have lost to alopecia. "The reward is when the client sees themselves in the mirror for the first time because they are shocked just how realistic it looks. The impressions that the tattoo machine leaves are so delicate that many have expressed that their coworkers can’t figure out what has changed about them. With practically no down time, this is a less expensive and more natural option to hair transplant surgery." Some clients that Jared sees, have already gone through the process of a hair transplant surgery. The SMP does a remarkable job of blending the transplanted hair and camouflaging the scalp to help make the entire head look natural. The densification process makes individuals with hair look up to 90% thicker! This treatment takes on average three, eight hour sessions over the course of six weeks. Lash & Brow Design Co. requires a complimentary consultation and pricing per session will vary. Typically, the SMP looks quite fresh for up to five years before needing a touchup. Jared Shaughnessy is not only excited about being able to camouflage surgical scars, but also men and women needing a fresh, new look!
Dr. Jan Turkle is pleased to welcome dermatologist Dr. Matt Strausburg to the practice. Dr. Strausburg is a medical and surgical dermatologist. He will see both pediatric and adult patients. Please call our office to schedule an appointment for your plastic surgery and dermatology needs. Saturday appointments available.

or most people, a positive identity and self-worth are usually defined only through professional and career success. After all, we typically spend most of our waking hours on the job and more time with co-workers and clients than with our families. Finding the right balance between work, hobbies and family can take a lifetime to achieve. In addition, it can be hard to clearly define a sense of purpose that leads to happy and successful living beyond just a career. Jimmy Dulin seems to have moved beyond all of these things earlier, and perhaps more effectively, than others.
Carmel home, he is currently the largest franchise owner in the state for RE/ MAX with 10 offices and more than 200 agents. Other business ventures include a property management company, an insurance company, a title company and real estate investing throughout the central Indiana area. Jimmy was inspired to start a career in real estate when, in college, he read Donald Trump’s Art of the Deal.
“I have no desire to
live with less than the lifestyle I currently live. I have lots of goals. I have a vision for the life I want to live. I’m fortunate I have such a loving family.
In short order, Jimmy learned by helping his clients make money in real estate, and it inspired him to set his own goals. He joined RE/MAX at 21, became an owner a few years later, and eventually a sole owner by buying out his partners in 2008.
Speaking with Jimmy recently, it’s clear that any professional success he has reached is not what he wants to talk about. Extremely humble, and not one to brag throughout our conversation, such success, however, is hard to completely ignore. Rather, it serves as a means to an end that Jimmy strives to share with those around him as a leader, culinary enthusiast and as a father.
“I formed a team in the early 1990’s,” he says. “I found I was successful at running a team, motivating and inspiring others."
To sum up, Jimmy has been in the real estate industry for 27 years. Calling

defined, or even captivated, by it. His true happiness and success in living comes from other passions, namely his hobbies and his family. One of his hobbies is cooking. Having become a sole owner at the height of the Great Recession, it was a stressful time. One way to manage the stress was by enrolling in culinary classes at Ivy Tech Community College for two years. “It kind of shaped me,” he says. “It gave me time to get away and check out. Good people left the business in a down market and cooking helped me pursue a passion away from the daily grind to clear my head. I was in a suit all day. At night I could put on my school uniform and go to class. I was just like everyone else, not a boss.”
20
This passion for cooking has carried over to RE/MAX, playing a big part of defining the culture Jimmy wants to create for others. In fact, Jimmy has made it a point to include kitchen space, culinary classes and dining rooms in his offices. “I believe in cooking in the office with our mortgage and title partners,” Jimmy says. “We have kitchen tables for sharing and collaboration, just a few feet away from the front door. We all sit at a big table, people from different industries, striking up conversations regarding shared interests.” A passion for cooking is not limited to just the office. Jimmy has also competed in BBQ contests. His accomplishments include winning the Boone County, Ind. BBQ contest in 2016, ABS O LUT E L IV IN GM AGAZ IN E .COM
earning him the right to compete in the 2017 Indiana State Fair. “BBQ to me, is love and food put together,” Jimmy says. “I like soul food. Cooking BBQ is relaxing, enjoyable and a way for me to explore my artistic side. Cooking in general is very personal to me. When I think of BBQ, it’s a long process. It’s a beautiful day, sitting with others I love, and producing a product that’s great.” Jimmy gets to fulfill this by hosting Sunday dinners most weeks. To him, it’s an opportunity to get together with others and to share his passions with family and friends. Through these Sunday dinners, Jimmy has developed a particularly close friendship with one neighbor, a 91-yearold man, who recently lost his

wife. This neighbor has made Jimmy his power of attorney should anything happen to him. This is one example of how Jimmy tries to help others. “It’s all about getting together, talking, sharing ideas," Jimmy says. “What’s the point of cooking if I don’t share? I want to bring happiness and joy to others. That’s what cooking is all about for me.” Another passion is family. Jimmy has been married for 20 years and is the father of two. His son, 18, has plans of pursuing professional golf while away at college in Florida. His 16-year-old daughter is a sophomore in high school and is an accomplished cheerleader and dancer with plans for a career in forensics or as an attorney. While building a successful franchise at RE/MAX, his commitment to family never wavered: “Through the years, I didn’t miss out on the things ABS O LUT E L IV IN GM AGAZ IN E .COM

that were truly important like cheerleading and golf practices,” Jimmy says. While Jimmy is not shy about his dropping out of college to pursue a career he loved, the irony of his kids pursuing the college education that he gave up, is not lost on him. “I put zero pressure on them to go to college,” Jimmy says. “They need to do what’s good for them, not any kind of social pressure. They
need to do what they can to be happy and figure out what’s the best way to make an impact. Is that by volunteering? Creating jobs? Creating resources to help others is what I try to instill. Money and success is not wrong, it’s what they do with it that matters. I don’t tell my kids what to do, only they need to do their best and be willing to live the lifestyle they can afford.” One way Jimmy does this is by getting his kids to read books, for example self-help books or those related to business. “If you read, I’ll give you $100,” he tells them. They then might talk about what they learned

over Sunday dinner. “There are lots of ways to gain an education other than just college,” Jimmy says. Going forward, Jimmy would like to retire one day in Florida, previously Michigan, but now that his son is heading to Florida his plans may have changed. “I’d love to retire with a house on a lake in Florida. My wife wants to be the grandma with a big house where the grandkids can stay and have fun,” Jimmy says. “I have no desire to live with less than the lifestyle I currently live. I have lots of goals. I have a vision for the life I want to live and I’m fortunate I have such a loving family.”

One of Indianapolis’ hottest and newest development projects on the northside, Ironworks, features Sangiovese Ristorante. Sangiovese is owned by Chris Evans and managed by Kate Pelzer. Ironworks is a mixed-use apartment and retail complex near the Fashion Mall off 86th Street. Sangiovese opened in its new location there in 2015. More recently, the Ironworks Hotel opened in October 2017. “This is a location people want to come to,” Chris says. “It’s

the best place to be if we’re not downtown. These buildings will last 100 years.” Indeed, Ironworks provides Sangiovese a good mix of local residents and visitors from out of town. More than 120 people live in the upstairs apartments while the recently opened hotel provides another boost for business. Other restaurants and businesses are not a bad thing for Sangiovese either. “We have similar clientele,” Chris says. “The other businesses complement each

other, we’re all so different and unique.” Sangiovese features more than five dozen wines from all the famous wine regions of Italy: Piedmont, Tuscany, Sicily, and Veneto. In addition, guests can choose from a wide selection of domestic and international varieties. “We’re great for date night, great for business,” according to Kate. “You can splurge on wine, impress clients here. We can accommodate large groups and any business function.
There have also been proposals, weddings, anniversaries here. People come back to celebrate those life moments captured by being here.” Three quarters of Sangiovese’s client base are regulars. The restaurant can hold 80 seats and most guests average a stay of almost three hours. The motto of the restaurant according to Chris is: get to know your clients and build relationships. “Everybody wants to be recognized and feel important,” Chris says. “That’s kind of our niche. Ask people things, talk to them, make notes on their reservation of things like their wine and food preference. That kind of personal attention, the personal details, matter.
Making sure they have extra large glasses and they stay full. Not everyone has to be entertained.” Chris has owned Sangiovese since 2007. Growing up he worked in restaurants, everything from dishwashing on up. He worked for the original owner of the restaurant shortly after attending IU to pursue a degree in journalism. The original owner, Gino Pizza, taught Chris what it takes to succeed in restaurants. He fell in love with the way relationships were cultivated with customers. In particular, Chris was moved by customers coming in alone because they felt comfortable with the atmosphere. Kate, a native of Minnesota, has a background working as a
host and bartending. Her role as general manager includes keeping the staff on track and implementing a wine tasting program for staff, a passion helped cultivated by Chris. “She wanted to learn more about wine and get more involved, something that helps with her bartending experience,” Chris says. Kate’s favorite wine lately is Barbera, a red Italian wine grape variety, where as Chris prefers Arneis, an Italian white wine from the Piedmont region. “You can smell the culture coming out of it,” Kate says. Putting on wine education classes for the staff and having the best wine list helps set Sangiovese apart, according

to Chris. “We pay attention to the vintages and which ones go on our list. If I find something good, I’ll get cases of it for an entire year.” The dozens of wine selection of Sangiovese is definitely one thing that makes Sangiovese a special place to Kate. “There’s something to be said for the way wine celebrates life,” Kate says. “The way it brings people and families together. It’s such a cool cultural aspect. It’s a way for families to pass down knowledge. There are so many different styles and grapes I didn’t know ever existed. Every vineyard is different, every bottle has a

story. What a great product to sell.” When it comes to the food, guests of Sangiovese will find an assortment of pasta dishes including fettuccini, linguini, tortellini, and lasagna. Also featured are chicken, pork and seafood dishes. “Just close your eyes and pick something,” Kate says. “You can’t go wrong.”
30
Sangiovese’s chef has been with Chris for ten years. “We don’t compromise on quality. We take our time, don’t rush things.” One constant challenge of working in restaurants are expectations of customers are constantly evolving. “The question is, "What are guests looking for?” Chris says. “We never know if we will have 30200 guests a night so we try ABS O LUT E L IV IN GM AGAZ IN E .COM
to always be attentive." The location, atmosphere, attention to detail in wine and food, and focus on customer relationships help distinguish Sangiovese from the rest. “All of our customers are an extension of our family,” Chris says.

Flyboarding Founded in 2013, Indy Flight Academy is the first and only professional hydroflight school in Indiana. The school provides an experience like no other, teaching students how to hover over water, dive like dolphins and even do backflips, all while being educated on technique and safety. After experiencing the thrill of the sport himself, founder and professional flyboarder, Paul Stoeppelwerth, started the company because he wanted to teach others how to fly like superheroes and realized it was much easier to learn than other watersports like wakeboarding and waterskiing.
Go Ape Go Ape Eagle Creek Park is the perfect place for an adventurous family. Eagle Creek Park as a whole includes 1,400 acres of water and 3,900 acres of forest. There are opportunities for hiking and biking, as well as a beach, multiple nature centers and a marina with boat rentals. The Go Ape course within the park includes a variety of challenges, including obstacles, zip lines and Tarzan swings and is open to people aged 10 and older. The park takes between two and three hours to complete, and includes five zip lines and 39 obstacles situated 40 feet up into the treetops. There are also two Tarzan swings and a series of rope ladders, bridges, spider’s webs and trapezes. This adventure is great opportunity for families to experience and bond over the challenges of the course while also having fun!
Flyboarding was invented in 2012. The rider is secured to the board with bindings. The board is connected to a jetski via a hose which redirects the water that usually propels the jetski, to the nozzles below the riders boots, thrusting the rider up into the air. The rider controls direction with their feet and the instructor controls the power with the jetski throttle. The sensation is like you are flying! With over 6,000 students, ranging from ages 5 to 80, Indy Flight Academy has never had a student who has not flown including celebrities such as Diplo, Odell Beckham Jr., FloRida and the Notre Dame football team! Paul was one of the first instructors in the world and aims to give everyone a chance at this one-of-a-kind experience, no matter their ability. He specializes in flying students with special needs including cerebral palsy, paralysis, and autism. Contact Indy Flight Academy for more information, group rates and events. TAKE A STAND FOR BETTER HEALTH! ARE MANY WAYS OF GOING “ THERE FORWARD, BUT ONLY ONE WAY OF
“
STANDING STILL. Franklin D. Roosevelt
If you spend a lot of time at your desk and you are constantly in your seat, you are putting your body through undue stress. In an eight hour work day you should stand a minimum of two hours. Sitting stationary at a desk for several hours is unhealthy for your knees, back, and even more so your circulation. Using sit-stand desks allows for your blood to flow and circulate throughout the body. Balancing movement is essential for a healthy work environment. Sit-Stand desks are designed to make changing postures effortless. Allowing yourself 15 minutes of standing time every 45 minutes while working is not only good for energy and productivity but also your overall health. There have been several studies that have proven that regular standing breaks burns calories, can help prevent high blood pressure and even lower the risk of heart disease. Manually adjusted sit-stand desks allow immediate adjustment at all available heights. Whereas powered versions have programmable pre-sets to predetermined heights. These sit-stand desks can take an entire workstation from sitting, to standing, and back again, with a single touch of the keypad.
