Breakthrough:
Skin Resurfacing with Fractional CO2 Laser Fractional CO2 laser revolutionizes skin resurfacing without the downtime and without the harsh side effects. Just one procedure yields results!
pigment, acne scars and laxity of the skin are all conditions that get excellent results. What are the risks? The skin will have a red appearance due to increased blood flow because of the growth of superficial skin and collagen. This usually fades in a few days. There could be some swelling for about 24 hours. Most patients peel at about the third day, leaving healthy, pink skin. Some patients may have a little more erythema for a week or so, but it can be covered with makeup. Does it hurt? With the use of a topical anesthetic and oral Tylenol, the procedure feels like a deep sun burn. There is a little more discomfort the first few hours after the procedure. What is the recovery time? Most patients are able to resume work the next day depending on the patient and his or her lifestyle. The typical downtime is 4 or 5 days.
Wanting to look younger is not a new idea—the search for the best methods have gone on for centuries. A major breakthrough is a skin resurfacing technique known as fractional CO2 laser therapy.
T
he fractional CO2 laser combines the effectiveness of traditional CO2 laser therapy (the most effective resurfacing modality) with a new application technique. The fractional CO2 laser revolutionizes skin resurfacing without the downtime and harsh side effects. With just one procedure, a significant reduction in wrinkles, sun damage, age spots, acne scars, surface irregularities and skin laxity are noted. How does it work? With aging, the epidermis—the outermost layer of the skin—thins. The number of melanocyte (pigment
10

cells) decrease in number, but the ones that remain grow larger. Therefore, aging skin appears thinner and more translucent, and age spots and sun damaged areas become more prominent. Changes in the underlying connective tissue result in a loss of strength and elasticity. This progressive atrophy, along with the changes of the underlying architecture, yields folds and wrinkles. With this new therapy, the CO2 beam heats and vaporizes the superficial layer of the skin. By using the fraction mode, microscopic areas are treated, leaving cells around these areas intact and making healing and cell regeneration much faster. This modality

stimulates the natural wound healing mechanisms, and the fibroblasts respond to produce collagen, elastin and proteins, which restructure the skin. Tightening and textural improvement is apparent one week after treatment. By using the fractional mode there is much less pain, and the healing process is much faster. This results in smoother, clearer skin and a more youthful appearance. The procedure produces an immediate skin tightening and yields a decrease in sun spots, pore size, wrinkles, acne scars and other irregularities. What can be treated? Fine lines, wrinkles, uneven
How quickly do you see results? Once the peeling has occurred, the patient will see impressive improvement. These changes will get better over the next six months due to new collagen. Who should be treated? There are three groups of patients that will definitely benefit from fractional CO2 laser therapy. They are the younger patient with acne scars, the middle-aged patient with wrinkles and age spots, and older patient with wrinkles, age spots and pre-cancerous lesions. Is it only for the face? Fractional CO2 laser therapy can be used on other parts of the body, but it should only be performed by a physician trained in laser therapy due to the thinner skin in those areas. The fractional CO2 laser is an exciting and excellent modality that offers a more youthful appearance. For more information, call us at 317 7747777 or 317 773-6677. R.F. Jackson, MD, FACS, FAACS

LIFE Magazine The next time you’re having doubts about that perfect outfit, give denim a chance.
FASHION and STYLE
D
enim dates back to the 17th century. It was once said by a writer for American Fabrics magazine, “Denim is one of the world’s oldest fabrics, yet it remains eternally young.” I couldn’t have said it better myself, as this statement rings so very true no matter what the trends and zeitgeist are. Jeans were patented in America in 1873, and ever since then they’ve been a classic part of the American culture. “From punk rockers to Presidents, cowboys to convicts, hippies to haute couture models, denim is as classically American as baseball and apple pie,” opined Mia Fontaine. With that timeless spirit in mind, I’m ready to rock the denim looks this fall—and the beauty of it is that there’s a design for everyone of us out there. From 70s flare to high-waist skinnies, boyfriend relax, edgy ripped, and even girly embellishments you’re sure to find a style that fits your taste and budget. Another special detail about denim is that the fabric never goes out of style, and if the silhouette is not attractive to you any longer, they’re easy to change into a different design. Be sure to take your old jeans to your local taylor shop and see what can be done to them.
Denim Days
Like it or not, it’s all about denim frenzy lately. But wait—how can you possibly not like it? There’s no other fabric with such versatility as denim, and it’s the edge and comfort we can add to any outfit. 14

Some styles can be worn for work and look really chic and put together. Think skinny jeans with silk blouses and high heels (my favorite look EVER!!). Polished and beautiful with very little effort. A ripped jean with a leather moto jacket can come across as rebellious and edgy, add a bandana - the accessory of the month- to make a greater impact. Flare jeans pair perfectly with tunics, and other bohemian style shirts and blouses, the flare denim is also the choice of the horse riders, pair it with a flannel cute plaid shirt and a statement necklace for a girly western look. Embellished jeans with jewels or sparkles go right along with cashmere sweaters and other girly button ups. Balance the look by playing with shapes, if
fashion and STYLE the jeans are big and bulky wear a fitted top and vice-versa. There’s nothing wrong in sticking to one style solely, but if you want the true fashionista advice about this whole thing: Go ahead and mix and match all of the styles above! Yesss baby you read it right, put the edgy with the girly, the motorcycle with the chic, the boho with the western and hey as always have fun, there’s nothing more important in fashion than to have a good time and express your personality through the way you dress with a big ol’ smile and a conscious and ethical mind. Which brings me to this last note. I recently watched a documentary film called “The True Cost” (thetruecost.com) and as a fashion lover I feel like we should all be aware of today’s role in earth destruction and human rights the fashion industry is playing. Let’s buy more carefully and re-use more often. If you take the time to watch the documentary please reach out to me, I’d love to hear and get inspired by the MidWest fashion lovers, also be sure to check out our beloved local designers, they are everywhere in town and most resource materials and labor locally! Carrie Bradshaw,
Eat Your Heart Out! Karina Reske By Matthew Hume | Photography by Eduardo Peña
Karina first came to the attention of Active Life last December, when AL Editor Justyna Doruch approached her to write the AL fashion column. “Justyna had been following my blog for a while,” Karina tells me. “She came to me and asked, ‘Do you want to be our Carrie Bradshaw?’” People tell Karina all the time that she reminds them of the famed, fictional fashion columnist portrayed by Sarah Jessica Parker in the cult series Sex and the City. “I’ve always been a fan of the show and the movies—for a while I even had my hair done like hers,” she laughs. “When people would say I reminded them of Carrie Bradshaw, I’d just shrug it off.” But the comparison has never bothered Karina one bit.

K
arina Reske has that certain something that causes people to do a double take—literally, in my case. I’d arrived early at our appointed meeting spot, and I’d been looking up from my smart phone from time to time to see if I could spot her in the crowd. Then, as if answering a siren’s call, I looked up to catch a glimpse of beauty passing by—looking away at first, I immediately snapped my head back around. This woman had style! Wearing a tasteful black feather skirt, she walked with serious intent. Even before I saw her face, I knew this had to be stylist and fashion blogger Karina Reske. If each one of us has a passion—a purpose that serves to fulfill our soul—then Karina’s is clearly fashion. Originally from Saõ Paulo, Brazil, Karina has lived in the Indianapolis area since 2002, and with her she brings all the passion and verve we tend to associate with Paulistas (inhabitants of the energetic city). As a flight attendant back home, Karina first came to the United States to improve her English. She served as an au pair for nearly a year, and shortly before her return to Brazil, she met the man who would become her husband. “Brian and I have three kids now—ages 10, 9 and almost 8,” she tells me. She also tells me that having three children three years in a row has been the greatest challenge she’s
20

faced, to this very day. The first few years were especially hard, Karina recalls. “I had no time to shower—some days I’d go to bed with the same clothes I woke up in. And me, a person who likes fashion, right?” she laughs. “I have so much admiration for the stay-home moms of the world, but I wasn’t cut for it. For me, working outside the home makes me a better mom because when I go home, the time we spend together means so much more.”
Bona Fide Fashionista After those early years, once her children had grown up some, Karina made the choice to go back to school for fashion. “I spent four years studying at the Art Institute here in Indianapolis,” she tells me, “and in 2011 I got a job at Saks Fifth Avenue as a stylist. It felt so good to get out of the house and make money doing what I love.” It was also about that time that Karina started her blog, Karina Style Diaries. “Fashion is how I express myself,” she says, “and everything about my blog represents my inner soul.” (One visit, and you’ll see this passion for yourself.) In 2012, the family moved to Vail, Colorado, for her husband’s real estate business. “Brian’s parents live here in Indy,” she says, “Otherwise, we’d probably be closer to the mountains—we love them. And I love my hair in the dry weather!” And while some might be frustrated at being uprooted so soon after finishing a degree and landing a job, Karina took this opportunity to extend her
creativity even further. Being in the middle of the mountains, work was hard to come by in the off-season, and the job she found in a small boutique would have been great, but it didn’t start until November—months away. Karina kept blogging, but she admits it was hard to blog outfits when her daily routine was to take the kids to school and clean the house. “I decided to get more involved in make-up,” she says. “I educated myself with some basics and started watching others online, and after I got a solid base I started my YouTube channel.” (After you stop by her blog, check out the Karina Style Diaries channel on YouTube to find a variety of Karina’s hair, make-up and fashion videos.) When Karina and her family moved back to Indianapolis in early 2014, her new-found love of doing make-up translated first into a job as a make-up artist at Sephora. And these days, Karina works full-time at Saks Fifth Avenue as a beauty consultant. “It’s so much fun to be doing people’s make-up,” she says, enthusiastically. “We go to classes to learn about the latest trends, and then you come back and transfer that knowledge to your clients at the store.” But she admits she doesn’t have as much time to blog as she once did. “I work 35 hours a week, and then I go home to my family—I call it my second shift!” she laughs.
Active Living, Family Style I asked Karina to tell me more about her family. “My kids are so much more active
AC TIVE L IF E GUI DE . co m
than I am!” she says. “They really like water sports, and I’m just not into them. But my husband goes water skiing, and so they’re super active with him.” For Karina, just being Mom—being up and going with the kids all the time—is plenty of activity, but she still tries to workout when she can. “After having kids, you have to keep moving!” she says. “I’ll work out to Beachbody DVDs at home. Right now I’m doing the T25—it makes me work super hard. I’m also a big fan of Chalene Johnson.” Do the kids ever join in with Karina? “They think it’s the funniest thing to see me in front of the TV! But yeah, they’ll come and join me sometimes.” “Personal time” is a concept that has changed for Karina over the years. “I used to have girls’ nights out when the kids were little,” she tells me. “Before, when I worked part-time and I was with my kids so much, I felt I needed a break for me, and I always felt like I had to get a sitter to have alone time. But now, my break is my time with them, when I’m at home and participating in their lives.” Karina still claims “blog time” as her own personal time, and her family respects that. “Sometimes I’ll get a glass of wine and go into my office and say, ‘Mommy’s going to work,’” Karina says. “I’ll do my trend research, write, do two or three posts and schedule them. They can respect this side of me now.”
Value Added Over the years, Karina has come to value the time she spends with her family more and more, and she credits her faith community, the itown church, to a great extent with helping her to achieve a calmer and more balanced life. “I realized I wasn’t giving enough time to my kids, and there were all these people on social media, 90% of whom I didn’t know, needing my answer right away,” she says. “I learned they don’t need it right away.” Karina knew all along what her passions were, but she found herself continually lost as to what to do in the moment—looking instead to see what people were expecting of her. “I’m free of that now,” she tells me. “It’s not what people expect—it’s what I can give right now.” Through this change in philosophy, Karina has discovered herself to be a better mother, a better person, and even a better blogger. “I don’t blog as much, but I’m much more pleased with the quality of my blog posts.” Karina Reske is a bona fide fashionista, yes. She’s also a bona fide dreamer. “I’d really like to make a living out of blogging some day,” she says. “Even if it’s really hard to achieve, and if I know it might not happen, I can keep on dreaming. I’m a much better person with a dream than I am without.”

What was Karina wearing that caused me to do a double take the afternoon we met? During the interview, I asked her to break it down for me. AL: What are you wearing? The skirt is fantastic. KR: I like novelty pieces that are different. This is probably 7 years old [describing her black feather skirt], back when bebe was cool, not really my style anymore. But I save it forever. I love it, it’s one of those pieces that are timeless. I probably won’t wear it for another year, and then I pick it up again. AL: And what about your top? KR: This is a BCBG sheer top... It has this tuxedo thing, but it’s all sheer in the back. AL: I might call that “conservatively sexy.” KR: I’m all about class. We don’t need to try so hard, just be simple. It shows when you’re trying too hard. I have my pair of heels here, but... AL: Can I see the heel? KR: [She draws them out of her bag.] A pair of cute little Valentino’s, with their signature stud. Very plain, but it goes with everything.

LIFE Magazine Ever feel guilty when making the choice to work out instead of spending time with your family? Take a “race-cation” and have it all!
HEALTH and WELLNESS
Top 5
Reasons to Book a
RACE-CATION!
health and Wellness I planned our next adventure in Boston. This became a very special family trip, as my husband, parents, in-laws and sister-in-law all flew to Boston to cheer me on. Since then we have traveled to multiple states and all around Indiana with family and friends to race and sightsee. These trips truly are some of my most memorable getaways! Here are my top five reasons that you should book your racecation! 1. A deeper sense of dedication It’s easy to call off a local race when you know that there is another race just around the corner. Once you’ve booked a hotel and a flight and requested work days off, it’s hard to cancel or even to take that vacation when you still know that you didn’t accomplish what you set out to do while you were there.
Y
es, it’s exactly what it sounds like—a race and vacation combined into one. My very first racecation was in 2003, when I ran the Chicago Marathon. At the time, I was living in Puerto Rico and missing my family and friends back home in Indiana. I also felt like I was ready to challenge myself with a full marathon.
I hadn’t heard of the word race-cation, but I knew that if I managed my time right, I could pack everything in—from the marathon to seeing family and friends. Between completing my first 26.2, visiting with family and friends, and qualifying for Boston, I created one of my favorite memories. After we were moved back to Indiana,
2. Family involvement while connecting with yourself and improving your health If you are like most people with kids, there is always a feeling of selfishness in training and racing, even when you know you deserve to do something that benefits your health and you as a person. Planning a vacation around your race—especially a race that offers a kids’ run and varying distances—not only enables the whole family to get involved, but shifts the focus from just you, to the quality time spent on vacation with the family after race day. 3. New scenery, terrain and challenges Racing the same local races can become monotonous and
can lead to burnout. Entering events outside of your local area usually offers different terrain and scenery to explore. You may find your sense of excitement in racing is renewed with the anticipation of the unknown challenge. 4. The chance to meet and network with new people I especially love this with smaller trail runs! What’s great is that you already have a special connection or common bond with everyone who is racing, so it’s very easy to make new friends. Not only that, but these individuals have wonderful racing backgrounds, stories and energy that is inspiring and infectious. 5. Recovery time and relaxation before returning back to hectic schedules Every race completed deserves a celebration! There’s a natural high from completing a race, and then comes a certain level of exhaustion and relief. Planning the majority of vacation time after race day gives you time to walk off muscle soreness during sightseeing, put the race behind you and enjoy your time away!

Preparing for the Challenges of a Joint Replacement Not long ago, doctors advised patients to wait as long as possible before deciding to have a knee or hip replacement. But today’s state-of-the-art replacement joints, along with patients who insist on an active lifestyle, have led to younger patients opting for joint replacement surgery more than ever before. Jeff Pierson, MD, orthopedic surgeon with the Center for Hip & Knee Surgery, practices at the Franciscan St. Francis Health campus in Carmel. “Preparing yourself mentally and physically for surgery will go a long way toward easing your anxiety,” said Dr. Pierson. He offers a number of practical tips for maintaining a sense of calm and control when anticipating joint replacement surgery. Make sure you’re comfortable with your surgeon. If you are not 100 percent comfortable with your surgeon, consider finding another. Your surgeon should be highly qualified to do the procedure. Ask if you can talk to a former patient to get feedback. Arm yourself with knowledge. Ask your surgeon (and your surgeon’s staff) about the type of implant you’ll be receiving, the anesthesia you will need, how pain will be controlled, how long you will be in the hospital and what to expect during recovery. Think positively. Keep your mind focused on the end result of surgery—a significant reduction in pain, increased mobility and an improved quality of life. Schedule your surgery well in advance. You will need time to take care of routine medical check-ups and other appointments; make legal
AC T IVE LIFE GUI DE .com
arrangements (such as durable power of attorney); and make arrangements with friends or family to stay with you after surgery. Compile relevant information. As you prepare for surgery, your doctor will need information about your medical history, medications, allergies and insurance. Prepare a folder with all relevant information to ensure you don’t have to search for it each time it’s requested. Prepare your home. After surgery, getting around your home will be cumbersome. Consider moving your bed to the first floor of your home. Prepare a couple of weeks’ worth of meals and store them in the freezer. In the bathroom, consider installing a raised toilet seat, grab handle in the tub and a shower chair. Remove loose rugs in hallways, where you could be at risk for tripping.
It's not just a workout. It's your life!

Visit the Bureau of Motor Vehicles to apply for a temporary disabled parking permit. Obtain an application from your surgeon’s office to take to the BMV. Get your body ready for game day. Being physically fit at the time of surgery will help you recover more quickly. If you smoke or drink heavily, make a serious effort to quit. Exercise regularly, focusing on your upper-body strength (which you’ll be using to support yourself on crutches or a walker). Practice your post-surgery exercises. Become familiar with the exercises you’ll need to do after surgery— while you still have full control and power in your legs. This will make doing them during your recovery less awkward and overwhelming.

LIFE Magazine “Life is too short, and I’m Italian. I’d much rather eat pasta and drink wine than be a size 0.” – Sophia Bush
EAT+DRINK
EAT + DRINK Cook the pasta, uncovered, at a fast boil. NOTE: Once you have added your pasta, do not cover the pot with a lid. You can regulate the heat so the pasta/ water mixture doesn’t foam up and over the pot sides. Cooking Time: Don’t rely on the package to give you the correct cooking time. (This is only a guideline.) Start timing when the water returns to a boil. Most pastas cook in 8 to 12 minutes. Test dry pasta for doneness after about 4 minutes of cooking by tasting it. It is difficult to give exact cooking times since different shapes and thickness of pasta will take less or more time to cook. Watch the cooking process of the pasta carefully. Pasta can overcook very quickly. Pasta should be tender but still firm when you eat it, what the Italians call “al dente.”

How to Purchase Dried Pasta Read the label when buying dried pasta. The best pasta is made from 100% semolina— the label will say durum wheat semolina or semolina. Pastas made from durum wheat retain their shape and firmness while cooking. How to Measure Pasta Most dried pasta doubles in volume when cooked. For accuracy, measure pasta by weight rather than by cup. Cooked pasta can be measured by volume. The general rule is that one pound of dry pasta or freshly made pasta will serve six

as an appetizer, or four as a main course. How to Cook Perfect Pasta Important Rule: Pasta should be prepared just before serving it. To cook pasta properly, pasta needs a lot of water. A toosmall pot and too little water encourages the pasta to clump and stick together, thus cooking unevenly. Use plenty of water and use only cold or cool water. If your water contains any impurities, it will taint the finished flavor of the pasta. Filter your home water if possible. Covering the pot of cold water

with a lid will help bring the water to a boil faster. Add Salt: Salting the water makes pasta taste better by bringing out the natural flavor of the pasta. This does not increase the sodium level of your recipes. NOTE: It’s better to use kosher (coarse) salt. Do not add your salt until the water has come to a full boil. Do NOT add oil of any kind. Oil has the unwanted effect of coating the pasta so the sauce will not stick. Add the pasta, all at once, to the boiling salted water, and keep the heat high to bring the water back to the boil as quickly as possible. After you add the pasta to the boiling water, stir with a long wooden spoon. (Stirring prevents pasta from sticking to each other and from sticking to the bottom and the edge of pan.) Frequent stirring with a long wooden spoon or fork while the pasta is cooking will help the pasta to cook.
Italian tip for stopping cooking time: Once pasta has reached the “al dente” stage, immediately turn off your gas heat or remove the pot from the heat if using electric heat. Add approximately 1/2 to 1 cup COLD water to the hot water with the pasta. This will immediately lower the temperature of the water and stop the cooking. Don’t Drown Pasta: Never over sauce pasta. Italians complain that Americans drown their pasta in too much sauce. The Italian way is to toss pasta with just enough sauce to coat it without leaving a big puddle on the bottom of the plate. Pasta Etiquette: The perfect method for eating spaghetti or other long, stringy pasta is to twirl it around your fork. Use a spoon to help if needed. It is also acceptable to cut pasta with a knife and fork. What is undeniably bad manners is slurping in a mouthful of trailing pasta without the benefit of twirl or knife. It’s often loud, and it’s never pretty. . This story and other helpful and interesting culinary information can be found at www. whatscookingamerica.com

echnological gadgets are becoming a part of our everyday life. Just like with the mobile phone, one of the first such gadgets, we are already becoming addicted, depending on them for our daily actions. As technology advances, so do these beautifully designed gadgets. Smart Home Hubs Ultimately, all smart devices connect to the Internet. However, the way in which they interact with other smart devices and connect to your local network may vary. The vast array of communication methods used by different devices poses one of the biggest challenges in smart home tech: How do you make gadgets using different protocols communicate with one

another—and more importantly, how do you centrally manage them? Owing to their low-energy use, many smart home devices (such as LED bulbs) use ZigBee, Z-Wave or Belkin’s WEMO technology to link to each other wirelessly. However, if a smart home device doesn’t have WiFi or Bluetooth, but only uses ZigBee or Z-Wave, then that device must first connect to a bridge or hub, which is itself connected to your router. Some devices, such as the Philips Hue lights, ship with their own hub, but if you want to control a wider range of smart home products, you’ll need a hub that supports multiple devices and protocols. The Quirky Wink Hub supports Wi-Fi, ZigBee, Z-Wave and

Lutron. Similarly, Staples Connect Hubs connects to a number of smart devices, including lamps, alarm systems, TVs and more, and centrally monitors them via a remote control or an app—no matter the protocol the smart device uses. There are a couple of caveats with smart hubs. Even if a smart hub supports ZigBee devices, that does not necessarily mean it will work with all ZigBee smart products. Before purchasing a smart hub, you’ll want to ensure that it supports smart devices you have installed or want to purchase.
home and garden apps and set up an account before you can link them to a hub such as the Wink or Staples Connect. Smart Locks Smart locks, such as the Goji Smart Lock, allow you to control when your home is locked or unlocked, great for scheduling access for babysitters and dog walkers. Goji also takes pictures of everyone who appears at your door in front of your lock, adding an extra layer of security.
Smart Lights Lighting is also getting smarter. Smart LED bulbs can be controlled with an app and dimmed, turned on and off, and, in the case of the Philips Hue system, even change color to set a room’s mood. Other smart lights can do more than just brighten a room. For example, the Sengled Pulse has a built-in wireless speaker.
Also complicating matters is the fact that if you purchase, say, a Dropcam or Philips Hue bulbs, you first must activate those devices using their respective
