S

ummer is right around the corner, and we are all looking forward to soaking up the great outdoors with friends and family. But don’t let fun in the sun wreak havoc on your skin. The sun’s UVA and UVB rays cause collagen and elastin to break down, resulting in lax, loose skin. Exposure to ultraviolet light also increases the formation of free radicals in the skin leading to damaged cell DNA— imagine the same process that browns a freshly cut apple. All of this means wrinkles, dry skin, uneven tone, laxity, brown spots and even cancer. Prepare and protect your skin from summer sun with these tips.

Don’t let the sun get the better of you!

1. Make sun protection part of your daily routine. Sunscreens have come a long way from the thick, chalky creams of the past. New formulations have improved application, allowing for elegant wearability under makeup. Many sunscreens are also loaded with peptides and other anti-aging properties to reverse signs of aging and protect skin from future damage. Ask a skin care specialist which product is right for your skin based on your skin type and activity level. Consistent application and frequent reapplication throughout the day are crucial for best results. Seek shade and grab your favorite hat and sunglasses for extra protection.

8

2. Don’t hesitate to exfoliate. While you will want to avoid deep peels during the summer months, encouraging cell turnover is still important this time of year. Opt for gentler in-office procedures such as Dermaplaning, Vibraderm facials, or even a light glycolic or enzyme peel to improve skin texture and tone. There are many at-home options for exfoliation as well including polishes, scrubs and toners, but make sure you ask a skin care professional which ones are appropriate for your skin type to avoid damaging your skin.

A C TIVE LIFE MAGA ZIN E | M AY 2 0 1 7

3. Choose your laser carefully. Laser treatments that target pigment, such as IPL, are best avoided in the summer, but there are options available to rejuvenate skin yearround. Laser Genesis is a no-downtime procedure that is safe to use all year long. The technology uses a particular wavelength to stimulate collagen, improve skin texture and tone, shrink pores and reduce redness. This treatment is safe for all skin types, but talk with a certified skin care specialist to make sure it’s right for you.

4. If you are looking to reverse signs of already existing sun damage, schedule an appointment with a licensed skin care specialist. Medical grade skin care products can drastically improve the appearance of aging in the skin. Taking into account your schedule and budget, a plan can be formulated to help you achieve your skin care goals. You don’t have to hide indoors this summer to maintain healthy, beautiful skin. With these tips, you will be well on your way to a safe summer.

Diet and Lifestyle How

Affect Fertility

Maximize your fertility by maximizing your health.

Spring has sprung, and if you are anything like me, spring is always a good reminder to get out there and get active. As a fertility doctor, I am often asked what can be done to maximize fertility. Whether you are trying to start a family, or just thinking you might want to have a child in the future, here are a few tips to make sure you are ready when the time is right! 16

Maintain a healthy weight We know that our weight affects many health outcomes, and our fertility is certainly one of those outcomes. Women who fall into the “Obese” category (BMI >35) take on average twice as long to conceive as their friends of a normal weight! But did you know that being underweight can cause challenges as well, taking up to four times as long to get pregnant. Regular exercise is key to weight maintenance, and with the weather getting warmer and the days longer, now is the perfect time to start making a commitment! Eat well While there are no specific diet recommendations for fertility, eating a diet high in green-leafy vegetables and healthy fats and low in refined sugars and trans fats can be helpful to maximize nutrition. This becomes especially important in women with irregular menstrual cycles. Take your vitamins All women of reproductive age should be taking a prenatal vitamin with folic acid (to prevent birth defects). A vitamin with DHA, an omega-3 fatty acid that helps brain and skin development, could also be helpful. Finally, if winter has had you inside and covered up, you might want to make sure you are getting

A CTIVE LIF E MAG A ZIN E | M AY 2 0 1 7

enough Vitamin D. Over 40% of women are deficient in vitamin D and new research suggests it may affect pregnancy rates. Quit smoking Smoking has dramatic effects on both female and male fertility. Did you know that women who smoke go into menopause several years earlier than their non-smoking friends? See your doctor if you need help quitting. Moderate your coffee and alcohol intake Good news for those of you (like me) who can’t quite get the day going without their morning coffee… Moderate consumption of 1-2 cups per day doesn’t seem to affect fertility or pregnancy. The story is similar for moderate alcohol intake (1-2 glasses at night, < 7 per week). But again, moderation is key, and if you are already pregnant, no “safe” amount of alcohol has been established. If you experience irregular or heavy periods, have been trying for a year and are < 35, are over 35 and have been trying to conceive for 6 months, or want to conceive over 40, it’s time to get evaluated by a physician. Please contact Indiana Fertility Institute at (317) 575-6565 to schedule a consultation.

tepping into Juice Bar – Keystone, I thought I’d stumbled into a hipster paradise. The dark wood construction of the tables and counter, fresh flowers, and yes, what appeared to be growlers, all set my wanna-be-hipster gears into overdrive. But people were flocking into the newly opened store (it was Keystone’s opening day—the Carmel location opened last fall) not for craft beer, but for healthy and delicious foods, juices and smoothies. The menu at I Love Juice Bar can be overwhelming at first, especially if you find decisions hard to come by. From foods such as the Pad Thai Noodle Bowl (made from sweet potato noodles) and Dragon Fruit Bowl, to juices and smoothies like the Mean Greens, the What’s Up Doc, and the Orange You Smooth, there’s no end to the possibilities. They also offer health shots and fully-loaded cleanse combos, packaged in 16 oz. Mason jars. Dee explains that the sourcing of their menu items is based out of company headquarters in Nashville, TN. But look around the store and you’ll find a variety of local foods, from honey and pollen, to nutrition bars. “We source all of our honey and raw honey locally, and our bee pollen is all local, true to each market,” Dee says. “Corporate would probably tell you we’re some of the pickiest franchisee owners.” And

the dark wood surrounding us? All made by hand, she tells me. I can tell right away that Dee Brereton isn’t your average juice bar owner. So, who is she? “Depends on what time of the day it is! I wish there were more than 24 hours!” she laughs. On the one hand, she considers herself a mom and a wife, a daughter and sister. “Family is very important to me, first and foremost,” Dee says. In addition, Dee and her husband, Matt, took over the family business a few years ago. “It’s a speaker production company—third generation—my grandfather started it in 1959,” she tells me proudly. And of course, she’s an owner of Juice Bar – Carmel and Juice Bar – Keystone, with more I Love Juice Bar locations in the works. “I guess entrepreneur is a good word that wraps it up.” I guess I would have to agree.

Juice Bar Madness

Dee doesn’t believe that anything happens simply by chance. Back in 2013, she and her husband, and her son Nick, were living in Nashville, TN, where Dee was working on her music career. “I have a whole past life,” she jokes, and the Nashville music scene was just the latest. (Read about her childhood rise to Broadway on the next page.) It was in Nashville that Dee discovered the very first—and only, at the time—I Love Juice Bar. “They had all natural food and a lot

Juice Bar – Carmel was the first in Indiana (34th nationally), and Dee and Matt started out on their own, not intending to have additional partners. But when John Hunt, the company’s owner, called to say there was someone with “local celebrity status” interested in joining them in the Indianapolis market, they decided to meet the interested party for lunch. The celebrity was none other than Colts defensive end Kendall Langford, along with his wife Cristin. “We didn’t want a partnership going in, but halfway through lunch we did a complete 180-degree turn,” Dee tells me. “We both thought Kendall had similar goals and aspirations, and it just clicked.” A few weeks later, Kendall’s manager called him with another NFL player who wanted to join the I Love Juice Bar bandwagon. Within days, Antoine Bethea, currently of the Arizona Cardinals and former Colt, joined the partnership. “We joke we got the two nicest guys in the NFL,” Dee says. “They’re wonderful gentlemen with lovely wives and families, with great family support. It’s not just about business with them, we’re all like-minded people with big goals and aspirations.” Right now, the partners are looking at 20 to 30 Juice Bars outside of Indianapolis, with plans to expand next into the Florida market.

Picky—for a Greater Cause

It’s not a mere coincidence that Dee has thrown herself so passionately into this new endeavor. Dee has every reason

22

of organic ingredients. I was immediately hooked. I loved the look of it—and the food!” She took her husband and son, and they fell in love, too. “We decided we needed to franchise this, so we contacted the owners and they were just in the process of expanding,” Dee says. “So, we signed on with a handshake very early with the owners. My husband and I joke around now that it was like—‘Honey, can we have a juice bar?’” she laughs.

When I revealed to Dee that I was still getting over a cold, she promptly ordered me up a Sniffle Stopper shot of ginger, lemon, cayenne and a protective essential oil blend. (And yes, it packed just enough spice to open my sinuses right up.) to be concerned about the substances that enter her body, and that of her 17-year-old son, Nick. “I’m gluten intolerant, and I have a son with very special health needs,” she says. In 2001, when Dee was in the process of moving back to New York, her son, 15-months-old at the time, suffered an adverse vaccine reaction, which led to autism. “He was diagnosed with brain encephalopathy and autoimmune issues, and he still is and will always be in recovery mode,” she says. Dee

A CTIVE LIF E MAG A ZIN E | M AY 2 0 1 7

explains that her son’s health issues led her to seek alternative medicines and to explore the healing that can come from knowing your own food sensitivities or allergies. “We’re a very sick society, and I think people are becoming more and more aware,” Dee says. “We have too many young people walking around with cancer and autoimmune issues, and I say we’re injecting, inhaling and ingesting way too many toxins.” She understands there are some out there who would dismiss

her concerns and those of other parents who know the struggle associated with autism. “Some parents are ridiculed or called crazy parents,” Dee says, “but having the voice and personality I do, I’ve brought awareness where I can.” When Nick was 5-years-old, for instance, Channel 13 developed a multisegment news story surrounding the family. “They followed us around for a year, and documented our experience, and they brought to light how some vaccines and preservatives

AC TI V E L I FE M AGAZI NE . C O M

in them cannot be tolerated by some kids with genetic susceptibilities,” Dee explains. This discussion led me to think: How do I know for sure, as a person without any known food sensitivities, that I’m not “injecting, inhaling or ingesting” something that’s unwittingly triggering adverse reactions at the cellular level? Dee does her best to reassure me. “It’s about individual choices and making realistic goals,” she says. “Maybe you’re not sensitive, but give up gluten or dairy for a week, then add it back in, and if you feel bloated or tired, you could have a sensitivity.” And it’s not always gluten—Dee points out there are some who can’t have mangoes, for example. “I think for the newbie, though, try to make good choices. If you’re eating fast food six times a week, cut down and replace two of those meals with smoothies each week. But don’t beat yourself up—we can be very hard on ourselves.”

Keep Going

Dee’s exceedingly positive and enthusiastic outlook on life is contagious. “I’ve had some struggles,” she tells me, “from my son’s health issues, to a messy divorce from my first husband, who made Tiger Woods look like an angel.” But Dee doesn’t share her stories to receive pity—she puts them on a pedestal to show others what it’s like to keep going. “So many of us have gone through broken hearts, broken marriages, health struggles, lost loved ones—whatever the situation,” she says. “But with any tragedy, you keep going forward, and you come out the other side. You get out of your own way, and just keep going.” Dee most certainly has adopted that “keep going” philosophy. “Life is short— you see something you want to do? Go for it,” she says. “What’s the worst that can happen? Fail? I think people quit too early. You’re not quite to the finish line, but you just have to keep going and make it across.” What’s in store for Dee and Matt and their I Love Juice Bar partners? Well, in addition to the 20 to 30 stores in multiple markets, Dee tells me there’s another business opportunity brewing in her brain. “It’s completely different from this—related, but not juice—let’s just say it’s complementary,” she laughs. And if you’re wondering how in the world Dee Brereton makes it all happen, how she does it all, Dee says to you, smiling, “I’m just getting started.”

Water Safety Awareness With Goldfish Swim School

M

ay is recognized as National Water Safety and Drowning Prevention Month. This is a great time for families to think about water safety as we head into summer. Throughout the summer season, many families enjoy the beach, boating and pool season. It’s an exciting time of year, but it’s also time to make sure your family has all the water-safety skills they need.

24

Drowning is the leading cause of injury death to children ages 1 to 4 and the second leading cause of injury death for children ages 1 to 14. A child can drown in as little as 1 inch of water, and in as little time as 20 seconds. So what can parents do to keep their kids safer around water? • Maintain constant supervision of your children no matter what skill level they swim at or how shallow the water is. • Know that floaties, noodles and plastic inner tubes do NOT protect against drowning. They are created as water toys, not life-saving devices. Remember that lifejackets and other floatation devices do not replace the involvement of a parent.

quickly. Constant supervision and basic water safety skills will make for a safer summer for everyone. One of the benefits of teaching your kids how to swim at Goldfish Swim School is knowing that they’re also learning how to stay safer in and around the water. Water safety is one of those things that needs repetition to become second nature. That’s why Goldfish Swim School instructors use integrity, compassion and trust to teach important water safety skills during every swim lesson. For more information about Goldfish Swim School and to find lessons in your area, please visit: goldfishswimschool.com.

• Lifejackets can be essential water-safety tools when used in addition to adult supervision, but be sure to check that they are Coast Guard approved. • Enroll your child in swim lessons. It’s an essential life skill that will help keep your child safer. The water can be, and should be, a place for family fun, but keep in mind that accidents can happen
