COSMETIC SURGERY NO LONGER ONLY FOR WOMEN!
C
osmetic surgery procedures performed by qualified surgeons have been an option for years. Even in 2017, though, these procedures are commonly associated with women. While this may have been reasonable to believe a decade or more ago, attitudes have changed with the times. More and more men these days are turning to cosmetic surgery to hold on to their youthful appearance and refine specific areas of their bodies to feel better about themselves. Today, it is not even slightly uncommon for men to turn to cosmetic surgery or minimally invasive procedures. The reasons for this change go beyond vanity. For instance, many studies show that physically attractive men succeed better in the work place. A younger, more rested looking employee might get chosen for advancement versus an older tired-looking employee. In addition, cosmetic surgery may give men the boost in confidence they need in the dating scene.
LIPOSUCTION Liposuction is extremely popular among men seeking cosmetic work. Many of my male patients work hard at weight loss and physical exercise, but will come and say, “I just can’t seem to get rid of these love handles or this spare tire.” Liposuction can pinpoint those areas, and the result is a thinner, more defined torso. During the procedure, small puncture wounds are made, through which tumescent fluid is injected. This fluid gives pain relief and reduces blood loss to a minuscule amount. It is the safest way to do the surgery, in which small tubes called cannulas are used to remove fat and re-contour the body. I refer to the procedure as liposculpturing since we actually create a new, more attractive shape.
Many procedures, such as Botox and other minimally invasive injectable procedures, are equally popular with both men and women. Other surgical techniques hold more appeal to men and vice versa.
BLEPHAROPLASTY Baggy eyelids make one look older and incessantly tired. Blepharoplasty of the upper or lower eyelid can yield a brighter and more alert appearance to the eyes. Another benefit is that removal of the upper lid skin may improve vision. For this reason, upper eyelid surgery is extremely popular. There is very minimal scarring because eyelid skin is very thin and has a rich blood supply. The recovery time is short and the discomfort is minimal. The result is a less tired, more youthful appearance to the face.
In no particular order, here are five of the most frequently requested cosmetic surgeries accomplished on men.
NECK LIFT Men are often concerned with “turkey neck,” or excess fat under the chin, which weakens
8

the appearance of the jaw and makes one seem heavier. There are two types of neck lifts: a traditional and limited. The traditional approach is more extensive and requires longer incisions. The limited approach has smaller incisions and results in a less dramatic change. The cosmetic surgeon will determine your needs and make recommendations at your consultations. Liposuction alone of the neck may be enough to effect the desired change. A new way of removing neck fat is Kybella. Kybella is an injection technique that dissolves the fat cells, yielding a thinner, more defined neck. This treatment is non-surgical and can be accomplished quickly in the office. RHINOPLASTY Rhinoplasty may be sought for a variety of reasons. Men with broken noses, or those who suffer from deviated septums, may require nose surgery for medical reasons. Other men may want to change the size or shape of their nose to make them look and feel better and more confident. The incisions are hidden in the nose or under the nose where they can’t be seen, and the nose can be reshaped. The rhinoplasty surgeon will determine the best procedure to correct defects and give desired results. GYNECOMASTIA Many men who seek out cosmetic work are led to do so
by enlarged breasts. Often, they arrive in my office concerned about their “man boobs.” The causes for this undesired enlargement are multiple. In some cases, it is true gynecomastia due to hormonal influence, and in others pseudogynecomastia is mainly due to misplaced deposits of fat. On other occasions, it is a combination of the two. Many medications and supplements can also lead to the condition, and some recreational drugs also cause gynecomastia. Once the cause has been determined, treatment can be accomplished. In some cases, the surgery can be as simple as liposuction alone. However, on occasion, it may require excision of the breast tissue as well. This is called a mastectomy. Most times this can be accomplished through a small incision inside the pink part of the nipple, and it is subsequently hidden well. At the end of the procedure, and once healing has occurred, patients can develop the chest they want and wear tight shirts again without embarrassment. These are only a few of the multitude of procedures now available to men to enhance their appearance. Cosmetic surgery for men is becoming more and more prevalent and certainly is no longer just for women. A Powerful Tool in the Race against Colon Cancer “We’re in it to win, but this is one race I can’t lose.” John Andretti

ohn Andretti, former Indy 500 race car driver, has been sharing his race against colon cancer after being diagnosed with stage 4A colon cancer—revealed by a routine colonoscopy. Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related death in men and the third leading cause in women. However, it is highly preventable, and even curable, when detected early, often through use of a screening colonoscopy. Colonoscopy provides a thorough examination of your entire colon through use of a long, flexible tube equipped with a camera. Colon cancer can occur in any part of the colon, and most colorectal cancers begin as polyps that grow on the inner lining of the colon or rectum. These growths spread very slowly, taking several years to become cancerous. Some of the first signs and symptoms of colon cancer may include: • Bleeding from the rectum or blood in the stool
16
• Changes in bowel habits, such as increased diarrhea or constipation, or changes in stool consistency. Any changes that persist longer than four weeks should be checked out. • Changes in stool caliber • Cramping, gas or pain in the abdomen • A feeling that the bowel is not completely emptying • Unexplained weight loss • Fatigue or weakness However, some people with colon cancer never experience any symptoms of disease in the early stages. Symptoms may also vary based on the size of the tumor or its location. Most cases of colorectal cancer occur in men and women over age 50. Even if you have no family history of colorectal cancer, an unhealthy lifestyle can increase your risk of developing the disease. Some common risk factors for colorectal cancer include: • Age (being over 50) • Previous colorectal cancer • A history of adenomatous polyps
A CTIVE LIF E MAG A ZIN E | J UN E 2 0 1 7
• Family history of colorectal cancer • A high-fat diet • Prolonged consumption of red and processed meat • Smoking • Obesity • Heavy use of alcohol • Inflammatory bowel disease (such as Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis) • Diabetes • Previous endometrial or ovarian cancer • Undergoing radiation for gynecologic cancer TREATMENT If colon cancer is detected, treatment involves surgery to remove the part of the colon containing the tumor. Depending on the stage of the cancer, surgery is sometimes followed by chemotherapy. PREVENTION Making lifestyle changes, especially eating less red meat and more fiber, losing weight, quitting smoking and getting more exercise, may help prevent the disease, even in people with a family history.

Now is the Time To Swim! Why enrolling your children in swim lessons now will promote a lifetime of health and confidence. Although there are many benefits of taking swim lessons at a young age, perhaps none are as important as this: Taking swim lessons is shown to reduce the risk of death by drowning up to 88%!
ACCELERATION OF COGNITIVE DEVELOPMENT Studies have shown that children under the age of 5 who are enrolled in lessons are more advanced in their cognitive and physical development.
If that alone was the only reason to take lessons, it would be quite a compelling argument. What many people may not realize are the added benefits from taking lessons.
SOCIAL CONFIDENCE Strengthen social confidence by helping children better adapt to new situations, and gain self-confidence overcoming adversities encountered through the process of learning to swim.
WHOLE CHILD DEVELOPMENT One of my personal favorite reasons? Swim lessons boost the development of the whole child. Think of all the abilities that are utilized while learning to swim, including coordination, intelligence, problem solving, self-discipline and self-esteem.
learn to love a lifelong sport that is one of life’s greatest joys. Personally, we would love it if you joined us at Goldfish, but getting your children involved in swimming at a young age should be everyone's priority.
As you can tell, I am pretty passionate about swimming. My hope is that all children not only gain the above abilities, but also

LOVE LIFE, P Cover Story
I
was enjoying a warm, breezy spring afternoon on the shaded patio of Bazbeaux Pizza in Carmel. Located on Main Street in Carmel’s Arts and Design District, right alongside the Monon Trail, it seems I’d found a perfect spot to pass a little time people watching. What could make things even better? Sitting down over a cold beer with Jeff Berman, Bazbeaux’s founder and owner, chatting about life, love, community, and, well, pizza—of course.
When people ask Jeff what he does, his response typically goes something along the lines of: “I’m a pizza guy.” Not wanting to boast about the success of Bazbeaux’s three Indianapolis area locations, he usually doesn’t go beyond that humble moniker unless people press him. “Folks will usually follow up wanting to know if I deliver them or make them,” Jeff says. “That’s when I tell them I own the Bazbeaux in Indianapolis. I’m a bit biased, but I believe we’re one of the best pizza places in the area.” Unassuming as he may be, Jeff has every reason to be proud of the local pizza chain that he started at the age of 29, when he decided to follow his dream of owning a restaurant. In the very beginning, with just one other employee in the kitchen and a server, Jeff put his mark on the Indy pizza scene by churning out pies with whole wheat crusts and what were then considered untraditional

and
toppings like spinach, ricotta cheese and other healthier options. Today, more than 30 years later, Jeff has “raised” a family of nearly 100 employees, who continue to feed the hungry masses yearning to eat cheese.
THE MAKING OF A "PIZZA GUY"
A native of Indianapolis, with an Englishborn mother and a successfully itinerant opera singer as a father, Jeff found himself attending schools in Indianapolis, England and Geneva, Switzerland, before his family settled back down in Indianapolis in time for Jeff to attend and complete high school at Lawrence Central. At 17-years-old, he packed his bags again, this time for New Orleans, to attend Tulane University. As it turns out, the time he spent there didn’t lead to a major, but it stirred Jeff’s youthful heart. “I absolutely fell in love with New Orleans,” he tells me, “the bars, the music, the Bohemian, wonderful, colorful city that it was.” He still goes down each Mardi Gras for a long weekend with old friends to ride in the Krewe of Thoth on the Sunday before Fat Tuesday. After three-and-a-half years at Tulane, Jeff moved back to Indianapolis and finished up his studies with a marketing major at IUPUI. As much as Jeff seemed to light up when he spoke of New Orleans, I asked why he didn’t stay. “I think I moved back to be closer to my parents and my friends,” Jeff
izza
says. “Indianapolis is my comfort zone.” As he told me that afternoon, Jeff’s a family man, through and through.
He admits that opening a pizza place wasn’t his first notion upon graduation. “I wanted to be a stock broker and drive a Porsche,” Jeff says with a chuckle. But as clarity comes with time, he found he didn’t have the salesmanship such a career entailed. “I’d always wanted to have a little restaurant,” he says, “I loved the idea of it.” So, when Jeff saw an ad in the Indianapolis Star for a restaurant space along the Broad Ripple Canal for a mere $15K, he jumped at the chance. Initially, he considered serving up New Orleans-style gumbo and jambalaya, but if Jeff learned nothing else in the years he spent studying marketing, it was to find a need and then fill it. The need he identified was in the Indianapolis pizza market. “I decided no one was doing pizza like the innovations I’d seen in Chicago and New York and what I’d read about what was happening in LA,” Jeff says, “and I really wanted to bring that to Indianapolis.”
THRIVING ON CHALLENGE
Owning and maintaining a successful business comes with its share of stressors. For one, take the hundreds of emails Jeff receives on a daily basis. “I review every single

Then there’s the challenge of keeping Bazbeaux “fresh” in a rapidly expanding foodie community with more and more options for dining out, dining well and dining healthy. For Jeff, keeping Bazbeaux current is about sticking to what works and looking for ways to make a great product even better. “We’ve added some options in the last few years and let some slower movers fall off the menu,” he says, “and we’ve brought in a state-of-the-art water filtration system that brings even more consistency in the preparation of our dough.” Still, he says, it’s about sticking to a successful model—doing what they do in the best way they can. “Ultimately, we want to continue on the same path of providing a wonderful atmosphere for people to gather to enjoy affordable, creative food, in great communities that support local businesses.”
IT ALL COMES DOWN TO FAMILY

When I first sat down with Jeff that afternoon, he admitted to me right up front that this interview—this story that was to be “all about him”—made him somewhat uncomfortable, that he tends to prefer his privacy—and certainly, that’s to be respected. But in the time I spent with Jeff that day, I quickly saw that this article would not be “all about him.” The emphasis Jeff puts on the importance of family—both his own, and the work family he’s helped to create over the decades—struck me as a story worth celebrating. “I love to spend time with my mom and my kids when I can,” Jeff says. “My son Karl bartends at Nada [a downtown Indianapolis restaurant], and he keeps late hours, so I rarely see him. I talk to my son Max almost every day.” Max works at the downtown Bazbeaux location, and I asked Jeff if he ever encouraged Did you know that Bazbeaux’s Quattro Formaggio his sons to follow in his footsteps. (“four-cheese”) pizza actually comes with five? Jeff “No—it’s stressful and uncertain,” jokes that the fifth cheese on top of this Bazbeaux he says. “But if that’s what they had their hearts on, then I support that. favorite is what New Orlean’s folk refer to as a Max wanted to go into culinary— lagniappe (pronounced “lan-yap”)—a small gift given As you might imagine, some his stepfather is a chef, and his to a customer at the time of purchase. The Pint Room, located in the Carmel Arts and Design District, isn’t just your typical beer bar—it’s much more than that. They offer 124 beers on draft, with an emphasis on local craft beer and hand-crafted cocktails, but these aren’t the only options you will find at The Pint Room. The options are endless when it comes to alcohol, but when it comes to the food, that’s where you cannot go wrong. Quality and consistency is very important to The Pint Room in their “scratch” kitchen. Everything is fresh and made in-house. Although it may look like a familiar bar menu, they can assure you it is far from your typical food menu. The Pint Room is a family friendly restaurant. When people ask if The Pint Room is a bar or a restaurant, the answer is they are both. Some parents say this is their favorite place to bring the family, while others say it is the best place to sit at the bar and hang out with their friends. The Pint Room is what you want it to be. Stop in and grab a burger and a beer on your next visit through Carmel. Cheers!

What’s new in Hamilton County? K-Trails Equestrian Adventures at Strawtown Kotweei Park just opened in March and offers guided horseback rides and even pony rides. Located in Noblesville, it’s the perfect attraction for families to view the beauty of the outdoors via horseback. You can also find your inner Katniss Everdeen and try your hand at archery at Koteewi Range or fly through the treetops at the Koteewi Aerial Adventure & Treetop Trails.
Fun for families
Distracted kids will be fully engaged at Conner Prairie in Fishers when they have a chance to explore art, history, science and culture at the interactive history museum. Visitors can pet rare animals, ride high in the air in the 1859 Balloon Voyage or wander the 1836 Prairietown, where characters from the 19th century–blacksmiths, potters and carpenters–come to life. When you’re done traveling back in time, try our bike share program and ride the 10-plus miles of the Monon Trail. Take a break in the Carmel Arts and Design District for dinner at Bub’s Burgers and Ice Cream and experience the one-pound burger. Or pack a picnic and explore Flat Fork Creek Park in Fishers, where you’ll find fishing, mountain biking and tree houses.
