Teed Off at Cancer Golf Tournament GREENVILLE, NC- Spring is just around the corner and what comes to mind? Grabbing your clubs, heading to the course, and supporting a great cause. Riley’s Army is happy to announce our biggest spring fundraising event- The 5TH Annual Teed Off at Cancer Golf Tournament & Dinner. The Teed off at Cancer Charity Golf Tournament was started in 2012. It is presented by Delcor, Inc, a local family owned Heating, Cooling, and Plumbing Company. The Delcor family has been supporting the Greenville/ Pitt County area and the pirate nation for over 40 years. 100% of the funds raised from this charitable event is given to Riley’s Army… Delcor’s charity of choice. The 5th Annual Teed off at Cancer Golf Tournament will be held on Thursday May 12th 2016 at the Greenville Country Club with a 8:00am flight and a 1:00 pm flight. Find yourself three other friends to golf with and then register your team at www.teedoffatcancer.com. We will kick off the event with a dinner and some entertainment the night before. The Teed off at Cancer Dinner will be an evening complete with dinner, guest speaker Coach Jeff Connors, ECU‘s Strength and Conditioning Coach, music by Mark and Kelly from Jupiter Jones, raffle drawing, and silent auction. We offer support in the hospital, by providing meals for the children and their families and having volunteers sit with the children for respite care, offering comfort and support. We also find that the children and their families’ needs change as they continue to fight their battle with cancer. Providing immediate family support for financial burdens and essential needs is important to us. Being a volunteer-based organization, we rely heavily on our volunteers and the community to provide for these children’s needs. We currently serve over 182 children and their families. Riley dreamed that there would come a day where no child would have to be alone in the hospital, and thanks to our growing hospital volunteer program, her dream will come true. In 2015, our volunGVM | 5
teers provided over 1550 hours of volunteer service at the local children’s hospital. The needs of our families continue to grow and we are pushing forward with plans to expand, allowing us to help even more children & their families. Researchers have found that connecting with another person through talking triggers the pleasure centers in the brain with a rush of dopamine and oxytocin – the biggest neurological reward you can get outside an orgasm. Doesn’t listening sound pretty good now? Sadly, few people do it well. Here’s how to improve your skill.
FOCUS
Listening is actual, physical work; your heart rate picks up, your body temperature rises and your breathing increases. It only seems easy because our minds understand speech much faster than we speak (600 or so words per minute versus 125-150 words per minute). Since we can figure out what the speaker is saying faster than they can spit it out, we have plenty of time to daydream. Stay alert and focused on the speaker’s message to keep your mind from wandering off. And ditch the external distractions, like the blaring television or loud music.

STOP TALKING
Most of the time when we’re “listening” we’re really just planning what we want to say when it’s our turn. Use your listening time to try to understand what the speaker is actually saying. If you simply must open your mouth, use it to ask questions or paraphrase the message to let the speaker know you’re really trying to get it.
DON’T ASSUME
Often we stop listening when we assume we already know what the speaker is going to say, or that it’s not important or too hard to understand anyway. Try to remember a couple things here: first, that you have to get what your partner is saying before you can make judgments on it, and second, that you don’t have to agree with your partner, you just have to understand him/her.
KNOW YOUR ROLE
Is your partner just looking to vent or seeking your advice on something? One of the most common complaints from women when talking to their men is that men believe they need to provide all the answers to her “problems.” When she wants your suggestions, she’ll ask. Otherwise, assume she’s just venting.

Downtown Greenville has been under construction and the live music scene is appreciating the recognition it has received from the new bars and restaurants. However, it isn’t just the freshman batch of aspiring talent that is grateful for this renovation; the rock stars of G-Vegas’ past are glad to see the community support its rising artists. The new generation of club-hoppers probably haven’t heard of half the rock bands that used to rip through the small, dimly lit stages of this college community. They weren’t personally handed copies of Irvine’s first EP The Past Repeats Itself at Ham’s. They weren’t old enough to watch Assembly Required rock the stage at Dr. Unk’s on New Years. They weren’t able to see Stairwell perform with Parmalee when the now chart-topping country band was once a rock band. So to the newest nightlife generation, the next time you hear the Eli Craig Band flashback to “Shine” by Collective Soul in between Luke Bryan singles at The Buccaneer Music Hall, remember this: Parmalee’s Matt Thomas would not have worn cowboy boots to Live. It’s sad to know that the young adults of this generation won’t get to experience the raging sound of bands like these in their prime or get to walk into the clubs that helped pave their way to stardom. Many of the venues these bands played at, like Ham’s, Dr. Unk’s, and Live, have been closed or renovated and renamed. Many of the bands no longer play together, and some have moved on to other musical projects. Isn’t it about time they have a reunion? That is exactly what Michele Marston, the coordinator of Rock The Arts of Greenville, has planned. Hosted by Tie Breakers Sports Bar and Grill, Dauntless, Stairwell, No Proof, Assembly Required and Irvine are teaming up to promote and support local artists for the first Rock The Arts of Greenville benefit concert. 100 percent of the proceeds from ticket sales and 10 percent of food sales will be donated to The Pitt County Arts Council at Emerge, a non-profit organization that makes art education available and accessible to the community. 99.5 The X will have radio personalities Mick and Blando DJing, raffling off band memorabilia and giving away t-shirts.

St. Patrick’s Day Pool Party and Balloon Drop

I am Shakyla Betton. A 21 year old college student who attends East Carolina University. I am also the current intern for G-Vegas Magazine. On St. Patrick’s Day we hosted a pool party at the Province. There was great weather, good music and good vibes. The St. Patty’s Day pool party was the first pool party to kick off the pool party season and the turnout was great. Free pizza and Mountain Dew Kickstart samples were also offered to those that attended as well. Free tickets were given to a lucky winner to attend the 3/11 and SOJA concert at Myrtle Beach. It was great seeing ECU students come together for some fun by the pool. Later that night we hosted the St. Patty’s Day Balloon

Drop at 5th street Distillery. Given the fact that it was St. Patrick’s Day and there was money in the balloons that were going to be dropped I knew the turnout would be huge. Once the balloons were about to be released everyone ran over and waited with their hands up in hopes of getting a lucky cash prize in the balloons. Once the balloons were released people went crazy. After the balloon drop frenzy was over people went to buy more drinks and claim their prizes. People were drinking, dancing and having a good time for the rest of the night. It was nothing short of a successful St. Patrick’s Day. If you missed out you should definitely mark it on your calendars to celebrate your St. Patrick’s Day with G-Vegas next year.

What happened to the art of freestyling? BY JUNIOUS “MICROWAVE” SMITH III While nobody was on point like Phife Dawg, I tried to emulate his precision well. As the hip-hop community continues to mourn over the loss of a member of the phenomenal group “A Tribe Called Quest” after Phife’s death on March 22, my mind focused toward what many perceive the Golden Age of the musical genre. The 1990s were a time of growth, creativity and artists who weren’t afraid to come up with some bars off the top of their heads. Fast forward to 2016, when it seems like everybody and their mom has a Soundcloud, self included. While my focus is more centralized toward journalism these days, whenever I come out to G-Vegas I’ve been known to kick a freestyle or two, usually to a stunned crowd who start hyping me up. Only God knows how many rappers looked at me like I was an extraterrestrial after a freestyle, not just in Greenville, but anywhere. In the same breath, I’m wondering why others can’t emulate the Golden Age and put some lines together themselves without a pen and pad. Back home in Fayetteville, I made friends with several artists who made me look like a freestyle novice. Watching them effortlessly string words together in a rhythmic manner on a whim had me honing my skills, refining them and finally getting to the point where I can hop in any cypher and at worst no make a fool of myself. Yet, a lot of times when people talk about rapping and I put them on the spot, they’re searching for writtens. Maybe it’s just the new era. The innovation and complexity of the rhyme scheme has been replaced with more mumbling and druginfused lyrics, with so many up-and-coming artists (and many mainstream) basically sounding the same and taking others’ styles. While nobody cares when you’re lit and having a great time, ultimately it’s a painful experience for a once-proud hip-hop culture. Even then, the “freestyles” are either laughably pathetic (Rich Homie Quan anyone?) or they’re straight off the phone (Drake and Troy Ave.) Obviously, you have your multifaceted artists such as J. Cole, Kendrick Lamar and Logic (and the latter actually kicking some good freestyles), but don’t expect much from many. It pains me at times to meet another artist, think we’ll get a freestyle going and he or she can’t do it. Rest In Peace Phife Dawg. Hopefully more people will remember your legacy and adhere to what you and the Golden Age provided — great sounds, innovation and impromptu creativity. One can only dream, but for now I’ll keep doing my thing, keeping heads ringing. Word to Dr. Dre. GVM | 13

Roasted Tomato Bruschetta Total Time: 45 min Prep: 20 min Cook: 25 min Yield:4 servings, 2 pieces of toast per person Level: Easy Ingredients - 2 pints grape tomatoes - 1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil - Salt and freshly ground black pepper - 1 loaf sesame semolina bread - 2 cloves garlic, halved - 4 scallions, finely chopped - 1/2 cup basil leaves, thinly sliced Directions - Heat the oven to 400 degrees F. - Coat the tomatoes in olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Roast 20 minutes to concentrate the flavor and burst the tomatoes. - Cut 2 large “planks� of bread each 1-inch thick by slicing the bread lengthwise horizontally. Reserve the rest of the loaf for another use. - When you remove the tomatoes from the oven, switch on broiler. Char bread on both sides then rub hot bread with cut garlic. - In a bowl, lightly mash the roasted tomatoes and combine with scallions and basil. Top the large planks with tomato mixture then cut each giant crostini into 4 pieces, 8 pieces total.

Born on August 23, 1993, Ryan Haddock has dreamed of racing since he was a young man growing up locally and graduating from DH Conley. As a Greenville Fire Fighter and Gardnerville Volunteer Fire Rescue Captain he is a first responder and protector of our safety.

A DEVIL WHO DARES BY NATHAN BLACK
I cannot say which part of this new Daredevil season I was looking forward to the most, Punisher or Elektra. They are both spectacular characters and are a part of the reason why Daredevil was the the number one comic in the 80s--we’re talking comic gold of its time. Daredevil out sold them all during the Frank Miller run of the 80s, which prompted a need for more stories about ninjas and grittier, noir stories. Side note: the popularity of Daredevil was one of the contributing thoughts that helped to spawn the Ninja Turtles. Just something to consider. Anyway, Daredevil’s new season is wonderfully epic with plenty of the lowlevel street fighting and visceral undertones that made it a runaway hit from a year and a half ago. This time around the story is revved up even more, and leaves almost nothing back when figuring out new challenges for Murdock (Daredevil) to overcome. As things are picking up from last season, we are reminded of the great strains Murdock went through and how he endured to take down Wilson Fisk (The Kingpin). If this wasn’t hard enough, there appears to be a new player in town taking out mob bosses and causing violent acts throughout the city. As Murdock searches for this new character, he finds he is losing his hearing, leaving him deaf, as well as blind. As it is quickly discovered this new character is the Punisher, who is another vigilante like Murdock, but unafraid of killing his enemies to get the job done. The Punisher, also known as Frank Castle, is a former military sniper and combat vet who has taken it upon himself to punish those criminals that he has deemed guilty. With an extensive knowledge of

weapons and expert marksmanship, Castle takes on the role of The Punisher, taking down mobsters and other thugs of the underworld. That is, until he runs into Daredevil, who is at odds with his bloodthirst and conclusion of the faultiness of the justice system. Murdock--who is a lawyer by day--believes the law can still succeed in taking down the criminals he faces. On top of the Punisher, Elektra comes into town, a former girlfriend of Murdock’s and also a ruthless assassin who doesn’t shy from blood either. Elektra complicates things further for Murdock as he starts to become even closer to Karen, his current girlfriend, who he can’t seem to open up to about his secret identity. Elektra adds an air of spice to Murdock’s life that is clearly exciting to him; thus, through their adventures, they find more reasons to stay together despite Murdock’s chagrin. And if that weren’t enough, The Hand (the clandestine group of ninjas) returns even stronger to unravel an even more dangerous scheme than before. They even return with enemies from Murdock’s past that he thought were dead. This had to be one of my favorite parts, as Daredevil usually is seen as a ninja like character who must defeat other ninjas as his main obstacle. The Hand works in this regard as Murdock’s greatest threat, second only to the Kingpin himself. So all these great characters emerge, even old ones, with new challenges and new ways to further the character of Murdock. What could go wrong? How could this season not be a winner? Well it is a winner, but there are some things not as complete as I’d like. Some of the dialogue just drudges on too long as well as steps into that area of heavy
handedness, which is not like this show to do considering how tight and concise the first season was. There are plenty of moments where the willing suspension of disbeliefs is pushed to its limits and even more the sense of “how tough is Murdock, really?”--can be thrown around for debate. Considering this season puts him under even more injury than before and somehow Murdock still makes it to the finale, there is reason to ask just how much punishment can he take? There are plenty of small character nitpicks here and there, but mostly these flaws feel a part of a symptom of a studio that is trying new things with a character that is well liked. It should be applauded but sometimes you just can’t mess with what works. Still, it is hard not to like everything about this show. It is dark enough, mysteries enough, understandable enough, and even enough human elements exist behind every character that makes all the gears of this machine work. I would like to see it run more smoothly though. It would also be good to see every episode’s story written to the same level of quality. That has to be my only real complaint. With the next Marvel series, Luke Cage, set to release in September we will see if there is anymore Daredevil references that will arise, or if audiences will have to wait for The Defenders to release before we hear from Murdock again. With the strength of this season moving as undertow, it is possible audiences will get another Daredevil season, but probably not for a while. Final Grade: B+

UHHUH BABYYEAH is a band straight out of Louisville, Kentucky. Playing as UHUH BABYYEAH since 2009 and signed to Revival Recordings out of Raleigh, North Carolina for about a year and a half . They just released the “Illuminasty” EP March 4th and have been touring since the release, promoting this amazing collection of songs. They sound just as amazing live on stage and they ALL have fun during their set goofing around and just being the humble guys that they are. UHHUH BABYYEAH is another band that is hard to describe. I am the one that personally hates to label a band with a certain “genre” or “sub-genre” it is just one of my personal pet peeves. I have always felt once a band is labeled with a genre, it seems they get stuck with it.. And in my opinion why put a label on a band, especially when you know they can do so much more than that certain genre they are labeled under.... UHHUH BABYYEAH is THAT band that can have six very different songs on their EP and crush each and every song with a different sound, and it all wraps up beautifully to form “Illuminasty.” I asked my friend, James Thomas, who also happens to be part of the Revival Recordings Family to describe this EP in his own words. James did not hesitate or have to think on it. James quickly replied, “The ‘Illuminasty’ EP is in its own league, honestly, I’ve never heard anything quiet like it. It’s got pop, funk, rock, and energy all mixed into one thing and the end result is something AMAZING. ‘Satanic Verses’ is a particularly interesting song because it slows down and it is almost ambient, yet funky and dark. The EP covers a wide range of styles so there is something for everyone on it.”

I caught up with Kevin Fletcher, lead singer of UHUH BABYYEAH and asked a few questions about the new EP and the band. I was curious where the name came from so that was one of the first questions I asked Kevin and he said, “ Well, it depends on who you ask. You’ll get a different answer from each of us. Mine? It’s an ancient chant that opens a portal to another dimension. I asked Kevin where the name of the EP came from. “Illuminasty is a term we coined for the industry and the dark side of it. We’ve been chewed up and spit out a few times, but we keep coming back - stronger and more determined every time.” “Illuminasty’ is the culmination of 2 years of intense hard work on behalf of us, our team, as well as our friends,” says vocalist Kevin Fletcher. “We wanted to continue our evolution as a band with our next release and put out something that took what we did on ‘Trash Talk’ to a completely different level. I feel we not only achieved that, but crushed it. Illuminasty is my favorite collection of songs that we have ever released by far. My hope is that you, the listener, thinks so too.” Well I am hooked, the whole Illuminasty EP is on repeat and I can not get enough...Like James explained before, every song is different and there is something for everyone on it.. I am in LOVE and kinda digging “Old News” Kevin’s voice is sexy and sultry in this song about an old flame that he for sure DOES NOT want back...You will have to check this out for yourself...I give the whole EP FIVE thumbs up.
