DECEMBER’S GOT RHYTHM LIVE MUSIC IN G-VEGAS

Normally when I’m writing an article pertaining to live music in Greenville, I’m careful to make sure that I don’t just focus on one particular music venue. After all, every bar that has live music in Greenville is vitally important to the local music scene. This article will be the exception to the rule because my entire focus is on Peasant’s Pub this month. And sadly, I’m going to miss every show due to my own performing schedule. So since I can’t make it, I certainly hope you will carry the torch and take my place. On December 6, one of my favorite North Carolina bands is coming to town. That band is the Electric Soul Pandemic, or ESP for short. They’ve been together for about 10 years and they bring a very strong funky psychedelic sound with a hypnotic quality to it. I’ve seen them countless times and have done quite a few shows with them and they still sound fresh every time I see them play. The next night Monkey Mind will be performing at Peasant’s Pub. If you like long and blistering guitar solo’s, then you will certainly appreciate what this band has to offer. If you view the phrase “long and blistering guitar solo’s” as a bad thing, then you should probably just stay home and watch the latest Miley Cyrus video. Friday December 16 brings Signal Fire back to Greenville. You’ve heard me mention them before and you’re familar with these guys cause some of them were in the 5th Generation band that played consistently in this area. Like 5th Generation, Signal fire has a great Reggae sound and will make you want to get up and dance. The great thing about Reggae music is it’s wide appeal. Just about every one enjoys Reggae music. The next night, former long time locals Mac and Juice will be coming back to their roots. They use to regularly play at the old Peasant’s so this show is the equivalent of coming home. They’re bringing a funky drum-

I’ve heard great things and I’m familiar with some of the band members from prior bands that they have been in so I know that they are top notch musicians, hence forth a good band. They will be playing at Peasant’s Pub on New Years eve. Looking just ahead a little bit, the BIG Something will be coming around again on January 17. But we’ll talk about that a little more next month. Meanwhile, hope y’all have a great holiday season and please party responsibly. A cab ride is much cheaper than a DUI.

LIFE

Don’t be afraid to give up the good to go for the great BY KRYSTAL BRASWELL

The end of an era is upon is and a new dawn has emerged. In one of the longest running retail offerings in the greater Pitt County area, I bring to you the bittersweet words that Overton’s is exiting the stick and ball arena. They are bowing out with grace and poise and with many fond memories of years past. The section of the store that has outfitted kids and adults alike in all of the latest baseball, football, tennis, ping-pong and soccer gear for the past three decades is leaving our nation’s favorite past times in the hands of the big box stores. To make the move from the batting cages to the shooting range they are offering some pretty crazy discounts to you, our loyal O team followers in the sporting goods department. Drew and his crew and ready to move some product! Overton’s isn’t going anywhere though, let’s get that straight. They are just deciding to get back to their roots a little bit. They took a walk back down Jarvis and decided to refocus their energy on Eastern NC’s main agenda; hunting and fishing with a side of wakeboarding, peppered with a hearty portion of tailgating and seasoned with some beachside grilling and chilling! It’s time to do what they do best.

For the month of December, the entire stock of sporting goods merchandise will be 30% off. This means baseball pants, socks, cleats, belts, balls, bats, and gloves. Footballs, basketballs, ping-pong tables, basketball goals, helmets, gear bags, ankle braces, knee braces, cups and supporters, along with tennis rackets, tennis string, tennis balls, tennis gear bags, and ping-pong accessories. Batting gloves, football wrist bands…..well you get the point. They are moving on up and this gear has got to go! This really couldn’t have come at a more perfect time. We are all a little strapped for cash in the month of December with our wallets pleading for a vacation day (or maybe that’s just mine). Head down to the O and polish off that Christmas shopping with some cash to spare. And come on back to Overton’s in 2014 and see what exciting stuff they have tucked away in their boat fenders. I have a feeling they have a pretty sweet plan for the sporting goods department. It’s not to going to be lonely for long! I’m going to leave you with a quote from my boy J. “Don’t be afraid to give up the good to go for the great.” John D. Rockefeller, you were alright. Don’t be afraid to shop small this holiday season. I can guarantee the smaller stores will give you back your purchase tenfold in customer service, product knowledge, and holiday savings. They have discounts just like the big boys do. Something tells me they will work harder for your dollars in hopes to be able to see you again. A small store will return your calls without the awkward silences that you are probably experiencing with your current retail fling. Happy Shopping!

The G-Vegas soccer team is back on a roll! Our team competes in the Pitt-Greenville top Adult Co-ed Soccer League! On the 20th October at 5.0pm on a sunny Sunday afternoon we beat The Azzurri team 2 vs 1 in a tough game not for the faint hearted! If you dont know much about soccer The Azzurri is the nickname for the Italian national team! In America the Italians are famed for making Pizza and selling ice-cream,but those Italians are very passionate about Soccer! Our goalkeeper J.T ‘’Occupythemoon’’ Lafferty was injured in the game, with a gash half the way up his leg and a huge swollen foot. This happened near the beginning of the game and he played out the rest of the game with adrenaline running through his veins! Steffen Rieth our German Student says playing for ‘’G-Vegas rocks’’! Max our co-captain scored a stunning free kick!

ever see! was quoted as saying ‘’Va va voom’’!The team also triumphed 2 vs 0 over the #1 team ODB in the very last game of the season! In America soccer is without a doubt the # 1 growing sport in the USA. Other things very important in this country are,Brewing beer, local magazines, and charity! Team G-Vegas takes these things very much to heart! The team went to Duck Rabbit Brewery (the dark beer specialist) for a cookout. The team spirit came out as we drank great beer, toured the awesome local brewery, told funny stories and laughed a lot! G-Vegas magazine distributes upto 10,000 copies of the magazine around Greenville! The owner Kevin Howard is a cool guy who also supports local charities, the local soccer team, beer and local events! TECH

New Facebook App Redefines the Meaning of DTF – Dating Through Friends SetMeUp, a social discovery app, announces that in its initial release it achieved over 3 million searchable profiles. Unlike hook-up apps like Tinder where you’re connecting to complete strangers, with SetMeUp you find dates through friend introductions. The app utilizes friend-of-friend connections to help individuals meet new singles and enrich their first date experiences. SetMeUp creates an ecosystem where people can meet as they normally would offline, through their mutual friends. By leveraging Facebook, which people already trust and feel comfortable using, SetMeUp enables people to find and easily connect with their friends of friends. Users are able to connect to people who they are more likely to trust because everyone falls within the same social circles. This is particularly appealing to the college market since they can avoid the stigma of telling their friends they met someone online. The application is designed so no one knows who is using the app other than those people successfully connecting with each other, maintaining full privacy for the user. College students and postcollege graduates simply install the app on Facebook, select friends, and then search through those friend’s friends sorted by compatibility. “The goal is to get away from traditional online dating models and use social platforms that are integral to our everyday lives,” says SetMeUp co-founder and Harvard Business School grad, Abhishek Jain. In addition to launching the app, SetMeUp is also excited to announce the creation of an internship program for col-

Students interested in applying for this internship opportunity can e-mail their resume to apply@setmeupinc.com. College students at the University of Georgia love the application. Morgan Leaf, an undergraduate student at UGA, is tired of using hook-up apps where guys are sleazy. “I like SetMeUp because guys realize they’re accountable to our mutual friends.” says Leaf. “I wouldn’t date any other way.” A senior at Boston University, Estela Del Mar, feels the same way, adding, “On other dating apps, you don’t get any quality connections. With SetMeUp, I get connected through my friends so I can trust the people I meet.” About SetMeUp SetMeUp is a social discovery application, available on web and mobile devices, that helps you meet a new romantic interest through mutual friends on Facebook. To get a better understanding of the product, you can access SetMeUp on your web browser atwww.setmeupapp.com. Mobile is expected to be released within the month.
