LIFE

PROTECT YOUR SKIN THIS SUMMER BY NITHIN BHAGWANDASS

This summer as you head out to the beach, don’t forget the importance of protecting your skin from the sun. Prolonged sun exposure can cause changes in skin texture and premature aging of skin, but perhaps most importantly it is one of the most important risk factors for skin cancer. Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States and its incidence continues to rise. The most concerning form of skin cancer is melanoma, which is also on the rise. This is the most aggressive and deadly form of skin cancer. The CDC reports an incidence of more than 60,000 cases per year and more than 9,000 deaths per year from melanoma. Melanoma most commonly presents as a mole that has changed and is most commonly found on the back. Early detection of melanoma is the best way to prevent death. Your physician will not do a full body check for melanoma at every visit, so it is important for you to recognize the red flags for melanoma. The common features of melanoma can be remembered by the mnemonic ABCDE. A for Asymmetry: one half can look completely different from the other half. B for Border irregularity: the border can be jagged or uneven. C for Color: it can have multiple colors. D for Diameter: it is larger than the eraser on a pencil. And E for Elevation: it can have a raised surface. Melanoma may have any or all of these features, and most commonly it

g-vegasmagazine g-vegasmagazine | |5 5

presents as a mole that has changed. Melanoma can affect all people regardless of skin color, but some are at a higher risk than others. Family history of skin cancer, fair skin, blonde or red hair, freckles, numerous moles, and propensity to sunburn all increase your chances of getting melanoma. The major modifiable risk factor for melanoma is sun exposure. Particularly, it is exposure to invisible UV rays that is damaging to skin. Fortunately, it is not difficult to protect our skin from exposure to UV rays. Preventing the effects of UV rays means staying out of the sun in the middle of the day (10AM-4PM), minimizing tanning, wearing sunscreen, and using clothing that shields you from the sun. Although indoor tanning is often done with a timer that limits your exposure to the dangerous UV rays, there are no benefits of indoor tanning light exposure compared to outdoor sun exposure for protection from UV rays. For young women, it is often difficult to resist working on a tan, but the consequences of prolonged UV exposure may be grave later in life. Although it is best to eliminate tanning completely, if you do choose to tan, place limitations on how much time you spend allowing your skin to be exposed to the sun.

Sunscreen comes in many varieties these days (sprays, gels, lotions, wax sticks, etc.), but the most important thing to look for is SPF 15 or greater. Remember that all products are made differently and you can shop around to find the sunscreen that works best for you. Sunscreen not only protects against the development of skin cancer but also helps keep you from burning. Sunscreen must be worn regardless of cloudy skies because UV rays can pass through clouds. It has never been easier to apply sunscreen with the sprays available now, and it is important that you apply it before going outdoors to minimize exposure. Clothing is also protective against UV rays if you choose to wear long sleeve shirts, long pants, and wide-brimmed hats, but that may not make for the most fashionable beachwear. Wearing a hat can be crucial for those with bald heads. Sunscreen takes minutes to apply and is not going to keep you from having fun outdoors, so don’t go outside without it. This summer, as you enjoy the great weather outside, don’t forget about your skin. Sun exposure is damaging your skin and increases your risk of skin cancer. By minimizing UV exposure and using sunscreen, you can protect your skin for many more summers to enjoy. Have some fun in the sun, but be safe, and use sunscreen.

GVM THE GAME

XBOX “180” By Shamar Roundtree

It’s true. Microsoft has reversed its policies. There’s only a one-time system setup that requires an Internet connection -- no daily check-ins. Discs work like they have in the past -- they’ll need to be in your console’s tray -- so trade-ins aren’t going to change. Also, no regional restrictions. Best part? The update was written by Microsoft’s Don Mattrick. After what already feels like an eternity of warranted criticism over Microsoft’s mandatory online check-ins for Xbox One and other related DRM policies, the company has seemingly taken the backlash to heart. The always-online requirement has been dropped, meaning users won’t have to check in daily and game discs will function as they do currently, reports Giant Bomb. Sources tell the outlet that the new polices will result in the following: No more always online requirement The console no longer has to check in every 24 hours All game discs will work on Xbox One as they do on Xbox 360

g-vegasmagazine | 9

An Internet connection is only required when initially setting up the console All downloaded games will function the same when online or offline No additional restrictions on trading games or loaning discs Region locks have been dropped The official Xbox website’s FAQ for Xbox One has been updated today stating that “As a result of feedback from the Xbox community, we have changed certain policies for Xbox One reflected in this blog. I was so convinced that Microsoft was committed, that it had the infrastructure in place and wouldn’t turn back no matter how much heat it took. It feels so great to be wrong….but if they can change so much so fast, what’s stopping them from doing it again? In time we’ll see….

Rappers Make Showcase for Diabetes

By Nathan Black

Almost a year ago Jordan Finn (younger brother of Raymond Finn, drummer for Lonnie Walker) helped to start InFinnity Promotions. InFinnity specializes in promoting bands as well as making Press Kits, Social Media Management, Radio/Media Advertisement, Event Planning, Tour Booking, Artist Networking, and Promotion Consultations, which makes them a full promotion service. Atop of this they are putting together a rap competition at Tipsy Teapot on August 30th. The event will be sponsored through Tipsy Teapot, Sup Dogs, Lambda Mu sorority, G-Vegas, The Unheard Ear promotions, and, of course, InFinnity Promotions. The event has already begun to draw reputable talent from around Pitt County and North Carolina such as Sunny D, Leeory Mike, The Koolest, and Su-Spence. We sat down with Su-Spence and asked him what people should expect when coming out to see the rap scene in North Carolina, “they should expect a good show, good music. No matter the crowd: young crowd, college crowd, whoever, there’s something for them. ... I’ve always tried to speak for hardworking people, no matter what level they’re on.”Everything

g-vegasmagazine | 13

from dirty south to Bronx street style should be on display, and everyone should be satisfied by the end. Because of the competitive nature of the show all participants will be bringing their “A” game. Nothing but the best and most creative beats will be accepted, and nothing short of hearing every rhyme will suffice. Each artist will be measured on six different categories: Presence, Delivery, Crowd Control, Diction, Bar Structure or “Flow”, and Wit. All will be totaled together to give an overall score. All judging will remain unbiased and competition is expected to remain loose and drama free. In any case people are promised an exceptional display of talent from some of the best artists in the area. This will not be a freestyle competition. Each artist will be expected to display a set of songs rather than anything free range. Apart from the rappers performing, the Lambda Mu Step Team will showcase their talent with a demonstration of step moves and coordinated beats all set to foot stomping and hand claps. For anyone not familiar with Step Teams performance, now

would be the time to do a search on the movement. It should be mentioned that this event is a benefit for diabetes research and a portion of all proceeds will go to the Diabetes Research Institute. Upon hearing this many of the artists felt even more privileged to be a part of the event as the ones reached for contact all expressed personal experiences with seeing diabetes affect family members. “When I first heard about the show I was [excited]. I didn’t even know about the cause behind it but then I [knew] what it was for and I felt better about it. ...My dad has diabetes so it’s pretty important to me. “ Sunny D’s comments on the forthcoming event. The InFinnity event at Tipsy plans to bring out an impressive cast of artists and work to put out the most energetic and inspiring rap shows seen in recent months. This will be a back-to-school event also as it falls on August 30th of this year. The event will be five dollars at the door, and as mentioned a portions goes to Diabetes research. Expect a crowd and a lot of bass. There will be a beer and wine specials and select brands on tap, also.

LIFE

OVER IT! NEED WATER! BY KRYSTAL CLEGG I’m tired. I’m tired of summer school, tired of sitting in this freezing Brewster building while the Professor’s thumb drive is an endless fountain of power points and graphs. Seriously, it’s like 300 degrees outside, why are we observing arctic winter in this classroom? Pretty sure global warming started with Brewster’s AC consumption. I’m tired of my roommate’s dog and its insistence on peeing on anything that has fabric, cloth, or some actual monetary value. When did bushes become so overrated Sparky? I’m tired of the dragging myself to class at 8am (worst life choice ever) while the rest of Greenville sleeps until noon and then heads to the pool. I need some water or sun in my life STAT! In my most recent pity party I jumped in my land yacht and set sail down Evans. Stopped in at Overton’s and engaged in the best possible form of therapy that has ever existed, retail therapy. Their store is setup like a race track with this tile situation going around the entire store, its genius. Anyone remember Supermarket Sweep? No? Not so much? It’s pretty much the best game show ever – you tube it bro. I grabbed a cart and decided this could get interesting. Rainbows were front and center. Was wearing a pair but decided the black version made me feet look more tan. Unless the fluorescents in Brewster are going to start producing UV rays, my chances for a tan are pretty slim until Econ is over. I sashayed on down the race track a bit and stumbled into a honey hole, bathing suits. Mixed and matched a RVCA top with some adorable Billabong bottoms and added a Billabong cover up because I deserved it! I hadn’t even rounded turn 2 and I already had a complete outfit. Coming

g-vegasmagazine | 15

out of the turn I found myself in an aisle with lots of bright and exciting toys. As I was loading a 4th tube into my cart it dawned on me I didn’t exactly have a boat to pull all of these big new toys. I did the responsible thing and put them back only to load 3 pool floats in their place. Sweet, new outfit and pool floats, I was on a roll. I continued down the straight away and decided that before Pops sees this impending charge, I should probably get him something to ease the load. New RVCA board shorts and a pair of Reef coastal cruisers, he will think he is not pushing 60 and I will laugh watching him trying to wear it in public, it’s a win-win. Turn 3 didn’t disappoint where a fishing combo was added to the gang as well as a few Salt Life stickers and some sweet Calcutta koozies. Turn 4 took me to the register, which was well played universe as I had little room in my cart or on my person for anything else. In a little over 30 minutes I had not only turned my frown upside down but I managed to create my only little summer vacation spot right here in Greenville! I headed home and grabbed the roommates. I’ve spent the rest of my post Econ afternoons un-thawing in this adorable bathing suit and floating around my apartment pool like it’s my own private oasis. Don’t mind I share it with 400 of my closest friends. Koozies were a clutch purchase, it’s like they were made for Diet Pepsi. That quaint little store really gets into summer, wow. I even saw a guy walking out of there with scuba gear? Me and my land yacht will be back big O, it’s only a matter of time before I’m going for that giant party island. I’m thinking post Econ pick me up!

When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes - a washed up former pilot and an untested trainee - who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger

THE LIFE

A VACATION FROM MY VACATION

BY BAREFOOT WADE

Summer is here and I’m up to my usual shennigans. I’ve been playing music in the waterfront beach bars from the top of the North Carolina Outer Banks down to Folly Beach, South Carolina and damn near every beach in between. I normally squeeze a few Florida and Virginia shows in each summer, but I decided to just keep things in the Carolinas for the summer of 2013. Let’s be honest, summer for me is one big paid vacation. But this past week I took a “Vacation from my Vacation”. Believe it or not, all of my family is from Kansas. My cousin Jaryl (who is roughly the same age as me) and his mom who is known as my crazy aunt Julie (she gets that name because she gives all of her neices and nephews sex toys for our Christmas pre-

g-vegasmagazine | 19

sants each year) took their yearly trip to visit us here on the eastern seaboard.Obviously there are no beaches in Kansas, so we made sure that we had plenty of island activities planned for them. I roll into Jacksonville N.C. on Sunday evening from a show the night before in Charleston, South Carolina and pick up my cousin Jaryl. We ride out to the Emerald Isle beach house were we spend the next 4 days just having a blast. The first night we just drank at the house and caught up on everything. The next afternoon we spent most of the day on the beach and most of the night fishing. A cycle that we repeated for the next 3 days. We caught a bunch of fish and 2 sharks. My cousin had a blast calling all his friends in Kansas and telling them that he caught a shark. We also threw out a few crab traps and did pretty good there as well.

We threw back everything that wasn’t worth keeping and ate everything that we did keep (which is the proper way to fish). My next show was on Thursday which was conviently in Emerald Isle at the Emerald Club. Most of my shows are all solo shows, but sometimes I like to bring out a back up band. This Emerald Club show was such the occasion. The band met me at the beach house and we hung out for a bit before going to set up our gear. The next day, I headed to Greenville to play at A.J. McMurphy’s. Then on Saturday I said bye to my cousin and my crazy aunt, I picked up a cute girl from Beaufort, and proceded to go to Ocracoke where I’d be playing for the next 4 days. Life is good today...
