THE CAROLINAS REBEL WITH PAPA ROACH AND MORE “This record is about all the connections I have in my life,” That was the words that ran over and over in my mind after exiting the bus backstage at Carolina rebellion with the sounds of in this moment in the back ground. all I could think to to myself was. I feel the same way. This was the exact same connection. I was exactly where I wanted to be in my life as well. I was going to see Limp Bizkit for the first time in my life, someone I grew up Idolizing and not only seeing them, being within reaching distance from them but photographing them, there was something about that almost therapeutic. Jacobie states “It’s what I feel with my band, with music, with myself, with friends and with our fans when we come together. When we connect, we all become something greater.” That is for sure something I saw as an over all thing at Carolina Rebellion with the fans, friends, crowds. people were having a blast all around. From the moment the crowds were let into the gates it was an all out fun fest. It was pure excitement watching the crowds run from the Carolina stage to the Rebellion stage from one show to the next, but I will admit it was nice to have my little escape to the media tent in between sets. during which I was able to catch a few breaks to chat with Papa Roach He tells me the band has changed so much between

“We’ve gone from spastic punk rock kids to grown men with kids,families, wives, from no money to big hits to battling addiction.We’ve done it all together, and we’re still changing, still evolving and figuring it out -- lyrically and musically.” Interestingly, The Connection ended up a far different record than was originally envisioned. “The theme of the record is that I’m messed up and getting my life back together,” explains Shaddix. “I didn’t originally want to write about all the dark stuff going on in my life – I wanted to be positive and uplifting. But our producer [James Michael] was like “write what’s going on in your life. It’s falling apart? Write about it! That’s why this album is so personal and dark.” The entire event was full of energy and excitement In the end, the fans at Carolina Rebellion proved to be more hard-core than the bands they’d come to see and festival organizers. The two-day festival in Concord came to a muddy and abrupt end about 6 p.m. Sunday, nearly three hours before the festival was supposed to end with headliner Soundgarden. Throughout the day, the thousands of fans who attended had grown frustrated with performances delayed by rain and grow-

By Christina Boggart ing puddles on the festival’s three stages. “Rain or Shine. Rain or Shine,” the crowd chanted as word spread that the first band of the day, Nonpoint, had canceled. But by 3:30 p.m. when Hollywood Undead took the Carolina Stage, it looked like the day had turned around Fans’ enthusiastic headbobbing was unmistakable, even under the baggy, bright ponchos where many of them had taken cover. People were even beginning to crowd surf and toss around a beach ball again. Needless to say all and all it was a good weekend of great music, good entertainment and great memories.

Summer is here and that means it’s time for our favorite part of summer… SURF & TURF! It all started years ago with an idea to make a Custom X Surfboard with Action Surf Shop in Morehead City. Vans Warped Tour 2013, Under The Sun Tour, and The Summer Slaughter Tour 2013 will be bringing full day shows through. Four months ago, Sony let the world in on its newest console, The PlayStation 4. Microsoft finally shed light on its new upcoming console. Now, this is just a hardware reveal so no real games where shown but there where videos of Call of Duty: Ghost and Forza Motorsport playing. After almost a year of thinking calling it “Xbox 720”, we finally learned the real name of the console: Xbox One. Now up to this event there had been some nasty rumors going around about the system that needed to be addressed. The event, however, did not do the best job of proving those rumors wrong. Here are the big ones that kind of got answered. Will Xbox One HAVE to be connected on-line to work? No…and yes. The X1 HAS to get on-line once a day, to check for your games license. Will the Xbox One block used games? Not…Really? At the time of this writing it still not clear, I don’t think so, but I could be wrong. Will the Xbox One be backward compatible? No. none of your 360 games, XBLA Games or controllers work on the X1, but your gamer score and gamertag can move over.

The Xbox One console, spec wise, is powerful. As a matter of fact the specs of both the X1 and PS4 are almost the same (PS4 being faster). Along with the console, a new Kinect was shown. The bad news: the system uses it A LOT. The good news: it comes with the system now, and the system will NOT work without one. E3 is right around the corner and there we will learn about more about both PS4 and X1.

IRON MAN 3 By Nathan Black

Iron Man 3, starring Robert Downey Jr returns with the beloved Shell Head: the rich, brilliant and comically arrogant Tony Stark, as he takes on another new super villain and reveals even more about Tony’s past. This most recent film takes place right after the events of the Summer blockbuster, The Avengers and makes several references from this earlier film. From this vantage point of knowing comic book movies blend and overlap into each other Iron Man 3 appears almost removed from the cinematic Marvel Universe. Director Shane Black stripes down the heavier elements of magic and interdimensional travel from other Marvel films, reducing it back to a very comical, humanistic character study, a strength established from the first film and carried on through several other films. In this intimate setting we get to see Stark’s humor and relatability. The risk in this approach though is that for movie goers expecting that comic book, high energy, imaginative, eye candy glance of other worlds it may leave some unfulfilled. Black leaves more of the armor off rather than on, giving the

vulnerable nature of the hero to be shown. Although this might be a rather logical choose seeing how audiences are already quite familiar about what happens when Stark is dressed to the nines, sadly this works against expectation and may even be a sign of Black’s limitations as a writer. This Iron Man plays more like the buddy cop movies that were made famous two decades ago, Black’s trademark. While the elements of the original film appear in consequence they do so only as reference points to the way the story has changed completely. Regardless of the separation from the original format, once the viewer realizes this is a different take on the character most people should find the film quite enjoyable and even more hilarious. The comedic moments of this film are some of the highest quality in the franchise and change the whole tone of the story over into the realm of action/comedy rather than anything else. Without a doubt probably the easiest of the three Iron Man movies to sit back and just laugh with. Movie goers should be warned though that this is a bit of a gear shift from what they expected.

DON’T WASTE YOUR TIME. SUMMER ACTIVITIES FOR ALL Now that the time has come, summer is upon us and the heat will start barreling down on us here in Greenville, just like it does every year. But instead of sitting in your apartment or house, catching as much A/C as possible and sky-rocketing your electric bill, why don’t you take the chance to enjoy it in some easy and cheap ways. You should always take some time and head to the beach; it’s pretty much what you have been waiting for all winter. Go get your tan on, play some volleyball, maybe bring a bat, cooler, and some drinks to play some dizzy bat, or just bring a chair and relax. Whatever you do, you must go hit the sand and get your butt in the water. Also, this is your time to get in shape because the bathing suits come out and there are many summer nights in Greenville headed your way. So if you have some time, don’t be lazy and hit some weights. Here are some other ideas that you could take into consideration: attend

some concerts, fishing (day or night), picnics, visit some parks, pick-up games at the courts/fields, volunteer work, pick up some shifts, hit the water parks/amusement parks (never too old to be a kid), classic water fight, summer nights out on the porch, camping, go off-roading, hit as many pools as possible, make some things (possible floating beer pong table was my favorite), beer Olympics, disc golf or actual golf, and so much more. There are many opportunities out there for your college students to not waste the summer away because before you know it, football season will come, then winter won’t be far behind. If anything, don’t ever think about trips or activities, just go out there and do them. Don’t let yourself get lazy, tired, bored, or anything else that may cause you to waste your summer. Don’t hesitate to be spontaneous and just get up and leave to go to another place. Life is short, live it up.

The Shakedown HAVE You Covered By Nathan Black

When it comes to cover bands some may find immediate interest while others may give a casual eye roll wondering whatever happened to originality or how good could they really be? The Shakedown hopes to satisfy those high expectations and win over skeptics. Using tried and true material with their undeniable talent they can reach most, if not all crowds they come across. This father and son (Billy Craig and Billy Craig Jr.) founded band from Washington runs the gambit of pop/rock and country hits that make the word” variety” appear appropriate when considering their selection: The Foo Fighters, Grace Potter, Jason Aldean, Garth Brooks, Metallic, Miranda Lambert, and The Red Hot Chili Peppers. The mood

and even atmosphere can be altered like a light switch going from Blue driven Rock, to Metal, to Grass Roots, to Modern Country and back again; the most powerful part being how effortless they make it appear. With two strong male vocalists (Craig doing country and Craig Jr. doing the rock part) and the addition of Danyel Bennett to the group there is almost no range, or style The Shakedown cannot mimic, within reason. There is a deep affinity toward their song choices, although they are not above doing a crowd pleaser in order to keep the party going, such as Purple Rain, Garth Brooks, etc. “We want to be best friends with the audience.” Says Billy Craig when asked what the group embodies.

There is a sense of pure veneration in each song as none are chosen unless they can be performed to the professional level. Despite how difficult this feat may be the group hits the mark and serenades through every groove. The dials of some hidden radio seem turned with each song, and if it weren’t for the distinct southern draw of Craig, one could almost glimpse a different act taking the stage at times. It would be amiss not to mention how well balanced their sound quality is, also. The Shakedown fits like an audible glove in both honky-tonk and dive bars, drawing upon sounds reminiscent of the Grand Ole Opry mixed with the current nostalgia of 90s rock and grunge influence.

SUMMERTIME HAPPENINGS Some of you are sticking around Greenville for the summer and some of you are not. But either way, you’re looking for a summer adventure! Any of our North Carolina beaches are a prime spot for sure (that’s where I’ll be at for most of the season) and of course the local bars in Greenville are always happy to see you. But what else is there going on? Every Wednesday afternoon, there is the Umbrella Market downtown. This is a spot where local vendors come out to sell produce, clothes, purses and all sorts of random items (not just umbrellas). They probably have something that interest you there so go check it out. There is no admission and just showing up and looking around is encouraged.

If you aren’t afraid to get a little dirty you can find tons of shark’s teeth in the creek behind the park on 5th street. I’ve been going there all winter and collected about 1,500 teeth. There is a Reggae music festival on Emerald Isle on August 8, 9 and 10th. This event is hosted by the Emerald Club which is the longest running drinking establishment in Emerald Isle. If I’m not mistaken, Heritage is headlining this Festival. On the other side of the state (around Greensboro) is a music festival hosted by The Big Something band which is appropriately called “The Big What”. This takes place July 4-7. The music line up will be a must see for anyone who is a fan of the Jam Band scene.

I’ll be playing two sets on Saturday evening. Advance tickets are 60 dollars which is pretty reasonable for 3 days of peace love and music.
