HEALTH
5 Summer Steps for Healthy Living In the warmer, longer, lazier days of
summer, the living may not be easy, but your life probably feels less chaotic. Even adults tend to adopt a “school’s out!” attitude in summer. That’s why this is a perfect time to improve your health in a fashion so seasonally laid back you’ll barely notice the effort.
1. GIVE YOUR DIET A BERRY BOOST
reading on your patio, or when watching TV -- and the task will breeze by. Flossing reduces oral bacteria, which improves overall body health, and if oral bacteria is low, your body has more resources to fight bacteria elsewhere. Floss daily and you’re doing better than at least 85% of people.
Blueberries and blackberries are especially antioxidantrich. A big bonus: Berries are also tops in fiber, which helps keep cholesterol low and may even help prevent some cancers.
4. GET OUTSIDE TO EXERCISE
If you do one thing this summer to improve your diet, have a cup of mixed fresh berries -- blackberries, blueberries, or strawberries -- every day. They’ll help you load up on antioxidants, which may help prevent damage to tissues and reduce the risks of age-related illnesses.
2. GET DIRTY -- AND STRESS LESS
To improve your stress level, plant a small garden, cultivate a flower box, or if space is really limited, plant a few flower pots -- indoors or out. Just putting your hands in soil is “grounding.” And when life feels like you’re moving so fast your feet are barely touching the stuff, being mentally grounded can help relieve physical and mental stress.
3. FLOSS DAILY
You know you need to, now it’s time to start: floss every single day. Do it at the beach (in a secluded spot), while GVM | 5
Pick one outdoor activity -- going on a hike, taking a nature walk, playing games such as tag with your kids, cycling, roller blading, or swimming -- to shed that coopedup feeling of gym workouts. And remember, the family that plays together not only gets fit together -- it’s also a great way to create bonding time.
5. BE GOOD TO YOUR EYES
To protect your vision at work and at play, wear protective eyewear. When outdoors, wear sunglasses that block at least 99% of ultraviolet A and B rays. Sunglasses can help prevent cataracts, as well as wrinkles around the eyes. And when playing sports or doing tasks such as mowing the lawn, wear protective eyewear. Ask your eye doctor about the best type; some are sport-specific.

Sculpture and Pottery I am pleased to announce I have a Solo Show which open this June 3rd and through August 19th at Emerge Gallery in Greenville, NC. It will feature many new sculptures and pottery that I want to sell sell sell, they gotta go or I will drown in mustache cups and skull mugs. Haha! Emerge Gallery is the Pitt County Arts Council and is Greenville’s artistic hub in many ways. My CV is filled with different group exhibits at Emerge from over the years, so it is very neat to gain sole access to a whole gallery for an entire summer. Instead of setting up my pottery at various outdoor markets this summer, I have decided to install it all at Emerge and let them reap the benefits of selling my pottery and sculptures.
ON EXHIBIT:
new! large ceramic sculpture featuring a deer on top of a lady’s head. new! a wall of small relief sculptures that could double as soap dishes or spoon rests title: Series of Dreams they are freaky and psychedelic they are being fired at Dan Finch’s as I write this, fingers crossed! new! an outdoor sculpture featuring a bird and a yogi.
GVM | 7
...if it fits into the gallery! new! baby doll face mugs. YUMMY! a sculpture with moss never before seen in Greenville. I’m really excited about this exhibit and I think it will turn this town upside down. Riot in the streets turmoil. Watch out! ;-)
OTHER NEWS:
My pottery is available at these locations: Poor Man’s Hole in Swansboro, NC - Pineapple Yoga Studio in Wilmington, NC - Art Avenue in Greenville, NC Wilson Arts Council as part of a group exhibit of Dan Finch’s Studio Potters. Make sure to like my Facebook Page because I send my instagram photos there. I also updated the design on my website for your viewing pleasure. I will be going teaching/ managing at Interlochen Center for the Arts this summer for the 6th year and look forward to another beautiful Northern Michigan summer. -Andy Denton

INSANE
CLOWN POSSE BY CHRISTINA RENDANO
Most people, unless you live under a rock, have heard of Insane Clown Posse also known as ICP. They perform a unique style of hardcore hip hop known as horrorcore. The duo who perform under the respective personas of the “wicked clowns” Violent J and Shaggy 2 Dope are well-known for their elaborate live performances. Their shows include everything from breakdancing zombies, sinister clowns, grim reapers, spraying endless amounts of Faygo, and at the end of show their fans are welcomed on stage. When I heard ICP was coming to Ziggy’s By The Sea I was excited. Secretly I have always wanted to pack up and head out to a Gathering. A Juggalo Gathering is an annual festival put on by Psychopathic Records, featuring performances by the entire label as well as numerous well-known musical groups and underground artists. Some people attend music festivals like TomorrowWorld, Imagine Festival, Vans Warped Tour, or Carolina Rebellion...And some prefer Gathering of the Juggalos. The documentary “American Juggalo” gives a you deeper look at the often mocked and misunderstood subculture of Juggalos, hardcore ICP fans, who meet once a year for 4 days at The Gathering of the Juggalos. http://www.americanjuggalo.com/ What is a Juggalo? Juggalos and Juggalettes are die-hard fans that over time they have developed their own idioms, slang and characteristics that set them apart from others. According to Shaggy 2 Dope, “Juggalos come from all walks of life – from poverty, from rich, from all religions, all colors. It doesn’t matter if you’re born with a silver spoon in your mouth, or a crack rock in your mouth.” Juggalos have compared themselves to a family. One question that has been asked by many. Why do a tour for an album that is over 20 years old? The Riddle Box. So, I asked Jason Webber, director of public relations for Psychopathic Records, and his answer was straight to the point: “Juggalos have been asking for a ‘Riddle Box’ tour for several years now and since last year was the 20th anniversary of ‘The
GVM | 9
Riddle Box’ album, this tour is designed to honor the special place this record holds in the hearts of Juggalos all over the world. Looking back, ‘The Riddle Box’ was the record that really sowed the seeds of what would eventually become America’s last real subculture -- The Juggalos. So this tour is a tribute to both the album, which has become a bona fide underground rap classic, and to the Juggalo family.” The Insane Clown Posse show is one I will never forget. I have always heard rumors of ICP drowning the audience with Faygo while rapping and not once missing a beat. It does not matter how much you emphasize on the amount of Faygo that is there, it honestly never seems to end. An ICP show is one you have to experience for yourself. Everyone was ankle-deep and DRENCHED in Faygo and not one person seemed to mind. Faygo was also dripping from the ceiling, the walls, and speakers. I have to admit it was one of the craziest, yet well put together shows I have been to in a while. Would I go to another ICP show...OF COURSE!!! RISE RECORDS SIGN FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH FOR FUTURE RECORDED ALBUMS Rise Records have announced the signing of Five Finger Death Punch to a North American recording deal. The first album with Rise Records, the BMG-owned rock label, will be released following the completion of Five Finger Death Punch’s obligation to its current label, Prospect Park. The hard rock juggernauts, comprised of vocalist Ivan Moody, guitarists Zoltan Bathory and Jason Hook, drummer Jeremy Spencer and bassist Chris Kael formed in 2005 and have released six highly successful albums, five of which have been certified gold, with one reaching platinum status and another soon to follow. The Portland, Oregon-based label is excited to work with the band, welcoming them to a roster that includes Of Mice & Men, PVRIS, Crown The Empire and more. Craig Ericson, CEO of Rise Records, adds, “I’m honored to be working with one of the biggest arena rock bands in the world. I’m very confident in the future of Five Finger Death Punch and Rise Records and can’t wait to hear the music they make with our company.” “We are looking forward to the next phase of our recording career. We have had great success with our current label, Prospect Park, and will continue to enjoy further success with our next and final album (subject to surmounting the label’s court action to pre-

vent us from recording it), after which we will commence a new and exciting label partnership with the people at Rise and BMG,” said guitarist/founding member Zoltan Bathory. Five Finger Death Punch recently put tickets on sale for a Fall arena tour with co-headliners Shinedown and special guests Sixx:A.M. with support from As Lions. 5 Things to do this summer Instead of Interning As internship application deadlines are quickly approaching (and passing), students wait in anticipation, constantly refreshing their emails and checking their phones, to see if there is a new message that will determine their entire plans for the summer. While some students might land their dream internship, others might be faced with empty email inboxes and no voicemail. Students who don’t land that perfect internship should not be disheartened, as there are still many options and opportunities to make their summers productive and resume-worthy. And some of these opportunities can even be more rewarding than sitting in an office building 40 hours a week missing out on the summer sun.
1. STUDY ABROAD
What better way to spend a summer than in another country and also getting college credit for it? It is more than just a glorified summer vacation; it is a chance for students to enjoy their education in a new setting that will bring on new challenges. While the stressors of exams and papers might not be as prevalent, students will still be constantly thinking and realizing things they would not have otherwise, such as how to buy groceries in a market while barely knowing the native language. The benefits to studying abroad go far beyond professional development, as students often come back with life-changing experiences.
2. SUMMER CLASSES
If studying abroad is not in a student’s budget, taking a couple of summer courses can be beneficial. It can help guarantee that students will complete their majors in time to graduate without taking an extra semester. Summer classes are usually smaller in size as well, so students can have more oneon-one attention, and who knows — you might meet that professor
who becomes a lifelong mentor. It is definitely more likely to happen there than in a lecture hall filled with over 200 students. 3. UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH Research with a professor can sometimes be more beneficial than an internship. It allows students to hone in on their interests and build skills needed for graduate school. While students might think undergraduate research is mostly for the sciences, there are options for research in almost any field. Not to mention, there are fellowships and grants for research projects, so it can be more appealing than an unpaid, credit-earning internship.
4. WORK
It always helps to save up during the summer, so that going back to school students have a little extra spending money and do not have to worry as much about balancing work and school. It also then allows for students to focus on getting an internship during the school year.
5. VOLUNTEER
Whether it is going on a WOOFing adventure or starting a local Habitat for Humanity chapter, a volunteer experience can lead to a very enriching summer. Volunteering can allow for students to travel and offer the chance to gain leadership skills that look great on a resume. Starting a community project, such as a cancer walk, can help a student gain the organizational and professional skills needed for future goals. So for the students who are rejected from their internship applications, it is important not to get too discouraged and only look forward. Students should have a plan that will enable them to progress and have a more productive summer than they might have had wearing suits all summer in 90-degree weather.

MEET FOR COFFEE?
IT’S A DATE! BY RANDY MOORE
Many singles prefer meet-ups over coffee to more formal get-togethers, because it’s such a casual (and cheap) way to gauge a date you might not be willing to spend precious time and resources on yet. But don’t get too relaxed about this rendezvous – you still need to be on your best dating behavior. Here’s how to brew up romance over your Italian roast.
CHOOSE YOUR CAFÉ
It can be a funky local place or your favorite large chain, just as long as it’s got enough seating and won’t be too crowded. Pay attention to the vibe: avoid places that are full of too-quiet writers clacking away on laptops, or those that have too many loud distractions.
STAY FOCUSED
It’s easy to get flustered by all the hustle – catching your date come in the door, finding a seat, shouting out your complicated drink order, wrangling cups and napkins, and navigating the crowd. The excitement of the date itself has you on edge – and now you’re loaded on caffeine. Through all this, don’t forget to relax and focus on your date. Make a point to sustain eye contact, even while standing in line or waiting for your order.
GVM | 21
BE COOL
Don’t freak out on your barista when she messes up your tall extra hot two pump nonfat caramel macchiato with extra foam. (And be sure to say thanks and tip well if she gets it right!) Don’t panic if there’s nowhere to sit – suggest a walk outside if it’s nice, or joke about having to stand. Just keep a relaxed and casual attitude. It’s only coffee, remember?
DON’T COME HUNGRY
It’s great to be optimistic, but don’t show up starving and assume your date will lead to dinner. If things are going well after a half-hour or so, you can offer to split a sandwich or cookie. Coffee dates should be pretty short – only an hour or two even if it’s going well, and less if it isn’t.
PLAN A SECOND DATE
If things have gone well – you’ve both passed the coffee date test! – it’s okay to ask him or her out right then and there for another date. Plan to do something that will give you more time to get to know each other (like dinner), or suggest taking part in an activity or event you mentioned over your drinks.

PLAN YOUR SUMMER OF MUSIC BY ARRAN WRIGHT
Festival Season is once again in full force. With some amazing festivals already underway and others just announcing their lineups, there is no lack of music around the nation to get you up and traveling to the sound of the bass. As a lover of all things fest, I have compiled a list of some of the most amazing festivals that have been announced for the summer season. Let’s make some memories!
1. SUMMERFEST www.summerfest.com
When: June 29-July 3, and July 5-10, 2016 Where: Henry Maier Festival Park in Milwaukee, WI Headliners: Who isn’t playing here? Passion Pit, Martin Garrix, Willie Nelson, Death Cab for
Cutie, Billy Idol, Joan Jett, 311,
Umphrey’s McGee…and the list goes on and on and on
Cost: $20-$90
This is one of the most unique layouts for a festival I have come across. There is no genre of music unrecognized over this 11-Day extravaganza of powerful headliners, including our very own Parmalee playing with Blake Shelton. While some festivals may cost up to $400 per ticket, you can enjoy all eleven days for only $90. Tickets to the Marcus Amphitheater shows are sold separately, but there are hundreds of artists to enjoy without paying anything extra.
3. PANORAMA
www.panorama.nyc When: July 22-24, 2016 Where: Randall’s Island Park in New York City Headliners: Arcade Fire, Major Lazer, Kendrick Lamar, Flosstradamus, LCD Soundsystem, Sia, and probably 50 other artists that you know and love Cost: $369.00 plus $55 ferry ride GVM | 23
2. CAMP BISCO
www.campbisco.com When: July 14-16, 2016 Where: Montage Mountain in Scranton, PA Headliners: The Disco Biscuits, Odesza, Big Grizmatik (which is Big Gigantic, Gramatik, and Griz in one amazing package), The Polish Ambassador, and many more Cost: $195.50 plus $45 for camping Camp Bisco has made its way in to the hearts of every EDM festival lover out there. In its stunningly beautiful location this year at Montage Mountain, you can ride ziplines and view the entire festival grounds or kick back and enjoy the sunny days at the waterpark and wave pools. Who doesn’t want to hang out by the pool and listen to their favorite DJ’s for 3 days?
So, party on an island in NYC with the soundtrack of some of today’s most incredible artists? Don’t mind if I do. While this festival in its first year is a little bit closer to that $400 ticket I was talking about earlier, you are talking about some huge names in music coming together in one of the greatest cities in the world. Worth it!! Plus, every ticket includes admission to the Queens Museum where there will be an art exhibit about the evolution of punk rock and The Ramones.
GVM
TRAVEL
4. BASS CENTER
www.bassnectar.net/2016/02/bass-center-2016/ When: July 29 and 30, 2016 Where: DSG Park in Commerce City, CO Headliners: Wu-Tang Clan, Flux Pavilion, Porter Robinson, AlunaGeorge, Lupe Fiasco, and the one and only BASSNECTAR! Cost: $100-$180 plus $70 camping While this gathering of Bassnectar and friends is good enough reason to go to any festival, the fact that it is in Colorado makes it that much more appealing. With camping villages, food trucks, cannibass, and probably the world’s most incredible special FX, Bass Center is one that should not be missed. I mean, who doesn’t want a little bass in their face.
5. IMAGINE MUSIC FESTIVAL
www.imaginefestival.com When: August 26-28, 2016 Where: The Atlanta Motor Speedway in Atlanta, GA Headliners: Dillon Francis, Gramatik, Borgore, Zeds Dead, The Polish Ambassador, and a Phase 2 announcement that has yet to be released Cost: $169 plus $69 camping After experiencing Imagine Festival last year, I can tell you that this is one festival for the EDM lover in all of us. Growing from last year to a new location, adding camping, and practically taking over the festival scene in Georgia, IMF is an aquatic fairytale where you hope the story never ends. Spend the weekend in workshops and special events, riding amusement rides, enjoying circus performances, and hanging out at the silent disco at night. This is one of my favorite events I have attended, and one I will be returning to this year. I hope you’ll join me.
