THE SOUND
REPORT We talked last month about all the great shows on the Concert Calendar for this summer (as always, log on to 995thex.com for the full list of upcoming shows and links to get your tickets) but that’s not all that’s going down this beach season! Several years ago, 99.5 The X had a brilliant idea: There’s a lot of beach and tons of surfers in Eastern NC, what if we made a custom surfboard and gave it away? We called up Bobby Webb at Action Surf Shop in Morehead City, teamed up to make the 1st X Custom Surfboard, and the response was HUGE! The next year we decided to make another custom surfboard but decided that just wasn’t enough: “What about the skaters?” someone asked and The X Custom Skate Deck joined the party and SURF & TURF was born! Over the years the grand prize for Surf & Turf has included all kinds of awesome gear: beach towels, sun lotions, shirts, koozies, and tons more. What will be in the big prize this year? We’re already working on the early design ideas right now so there will definitely be a BRAND NEW X Custom Surfboard and X Custom Skate Deck. Other than that, you’ll have to wait till summertime and see! But that’s not all we’ve got coming your way this summer. The X will be keeping you loaded with tickets to all the great shows we talked about last month in the Rock Report. We’ll also be hosting a HUGE Kickoff to Summer party right on the beach in the not too distant future with some awesome giveaways and live music right on the sand (again, keep listening for more details), everything you need to make Mother’s Day AND Father’s Day ROCK, and a whole lot more so stay tuned! He’s recruited pedal-steel players, harpists, and violinists for a set so vintage in style -- with nods to ‘70s country, ‘60s garage, classic rock, and the blues -- that it’s sequenced to play on vinyl.” -- Grade: BMojo (Publisher) (p.80) - 5 stars out of 5 -- “[T]he musical invention remains consistent throughout and gradually we emerge out of the thorny briar thicket of broken hearts and busted noses.”

REDHOT CHILIPEPPERS

THE SOUND
CONCERT REVIEW
Last December, I had gotten two tickets to see the Red Hot Chili Peppers as a birthday present. The concert was supposed to be the following month, but singer Anthony Kedis had broken his leg and they postponed the show until April 4. I had always been a fan of the Red Hot Chili Peppers though I had yet to see them in concert. If you want to know the true merit of a band, you must see them live. The Chili Peppers have been recording albums since 1983 and had a strong underground following, but they didn’t cross over to main stream success until the early 90s. Thirty years and eight guitarists later, they are still releasing albums with hit songs. And as I was soon to find out, they can still put on an amazing high energy show. So when April 4th came around I was more than ready to go. The lights dimmed and the band came out and it was every-
g-vegasmagazine||99 g-vegasmagazine
thing I expected…but more. Aside from the non-stop jumping around on stage and the constant energy put forth by all the band members, they proceeded to prove to me why they have been around for all these years. I’m pretty sure they played at least a couple songs off of each of their 10 albums which is something most bands won’t do if they are promoting a recently released CD as they were. It is standard protocol for mainstream bands to shove there new music as far down your throats as they can regardless of whether or not there new stuff is up to par. Though there latest album “I’m With You” is certainly good stuff, I appreciated there way of promoting it while still playing all the great old stuff.
I knew I was in for a good time but I was happily surprised by a few elements. I was caught off guard a bit by their light show. It was the closest thing to 3D imagery you could get without the special glasses. There bass player who they call Flea, spent a good portion of the night jumping on top of his bass amp, walking back and forth on stage while doing a head stand during the various drum solos, and even caught us all way off guard when he sat down and played some ragtime style piano for one tune. To sum it all up, if you like the Red Hot Chili Peppers music, then you will certainly not be disappointed by their live show. I was very grateful for that birthday present.
SPRING CLEANING Spring a season fueled by a desire for a roomier, more spacious closet and a well organized wardrobe. Among the closet mayhem are those one pair of pumps with the tags still on them, which seemed utterly necessary at the time of purchase…two years ago. Aunt Susan’s atrocious birthday present is sure to be among the junk pile contenders. Before tossing those unwanted threads, consider the tons of unwanted clothing that are sent to the landfill each year. Not only do the mountains of discarded garments take hundreds of years to decompose, but synthetic fibers will not decompose at all. Some fibers can even produce methane that contributes to global warming. With trends changing every season, college students are feeling more than obligated to relieve their closets of last summer’s staple, and there is nothing wrong with that. When recycled, an unwanted article of clothing can make a huge difference. One man’s trash is RECYCLE AND UPCYCLE! another man’s treasure, so pass your old clothes on to someone you know or someone you don’t. College students are always in need of extra cash, so have a yard/garage sale or consign your clothing at a local consignment shop. The ReBoutique is Greenville’s exclusive women’s and children’s upscale consignment sale, which happens twice a year. You set the price of your clothing, and so it is an awesome way to be “green” and make some money. For more information visit, www. g-vegasmagazine | 11

THE LOOK
thereboutique.com. Goodwill, Salvation Army and other organizations offer tax forms you can file for incentives after donating your unwanted garments. Remember: what is good for the environment can also be good for the pocketbook. The most effective way to reduce waste is to not generate it in the first place. By reducing and reusing, consumers and industry can save on natural resources. Try updating your closet misfits by upcycling them into new fashions. Upcycling is the process of taking something unwanted or useless and turning it into something of higher quality. For example, cutting an old, worn out t-shirt into a cute summer halter top. Not only is revamping your closet an inexpensive way to get a new look, it is also an alternative way to deal with your waste. Threadbanger.com is full of DIY fashion how-tos on how to create your own style. Every Friday, ThreadBanger Projects provide tutorials on how you can convert your closet and upcycle your old clothes into new styles. You can also check out their youtube channel for quick tips and suggestions. Even though Earth Day is behind us now, each day is a new opportunity to appreciate and respect our environment. Consider mother earth with your daily choices, and adopt a way of life to help sustain her. Amongst the spring cleaning chaos, think about alternative uses for your unnecessary bits and pieces of clothing, and you’ll not only help protect and preserve the environment for future generations, but you’ll also save yourself some serious moolah!

WHAT’S ON
By Michael Morris
YOUR MIND How do I keep from being bored?
Being bored is one of the most common complaints I hear from patients, friends and acquaintances. Some people are bored because boredom has become a habit. Usually it is related to people getting lazy, either physically, mentally or creatively. Most people do not like to hear that they are responsible for their own boredom, but boredom can become a habit more quickly than a lot of people realize. One of the easiest ways to combat boredom is to do something absolutely brand new every day. The trick is to keep it very simple and do-able so it requires very little effort. It could be something as simple as putting barbeque sauce on a hamburger if you have never done that before. It could be adding a small amount of a new spice to a favorite recipe, taking a different route to a favorite destination, listening to some verses from a new song or reading a sentence or two from a magazine or website that you haven’t seen.
COUNSELING
If you want to take this a step further, I recommend that you develop two new skills a year. It could be anything - sky-diving, blending coffee, singing, dancing, body building or speaking a new language. If you are 25, and you develop two new skills a year, imagine how full your life is going to be at 29 or 30. Think of the different populations those new skills will open up to you. Can you imagine the amount of confidence you will have with all the different activities you can enjoy? Can you imagine the pleasures or positive experiences you will have? On the flip side, imagine what will happen to the negative stresses and experiences in your life. Both will go down exponentially. If you would like to know if you are a person who resists change or a person who embraces change, take a look at the way you respond to this article. I strongly suggest you give the “something new” technique a try. Make the decision to embrace change. Your life will be better for it. Michael G. Morris CDWIE, CRT, LCAS
You will be surprised at all the interesting things you will discover by developing this habit. You will also begin to notice that your resistance to change has decreased. Most people resist change like the plague. Subsequently they get bored or left behind. The most successful people I have ever met were not afraid of change. They embraced it. They led lives that were full of adventure, joy, happiness, confidence and peace. People who fear change end up living lives that are exactly the opposite. I know this sounds incredibly simple, but if you will stay with it for a little while and keep the new things coming, keep making slight adjustments and doing things a slightly different way, you will begin to experience new joys and pleasures. You will be surprised at how this simple technique can open up your life.

Edgar Allen Poe joins forces with a young Baltimore detective to hunt down a mad serial killer who’s using Poe’s own works as the basis in a string of brutal murders. When a mother and daughter are found brutally murdered in 19th century Baltimore, Detective Emmett Fields makes a startling discovery: the crime resembles a fictional murder described in gory detail in the local newspaper - part of a collection of stories penned by struggling writer and social pariah Edgar Allan Poe. But even as Poe is questioned by police, another grisly murder occurs, also inspired by a popular Poe story. Realizing a serial killer is on the loose using Poe’s writings as the backdrop for his bloody rampage, Fields enlists the author’s help in stopping the attacks. But when it appears someone close to Poe may become the murderer’s next victim, the stakes become even higher and the inventor of the detective story calls on his own powers of deduction to try to solve the case before it’s too late.

UNDERCLASMEN
IN NCAA We all have wished that we had the talent to go out on the field or court, dominate our competition, be a high class athlete and make the millions that the athletes today are making. This would be the ideal dream for many athletes today, but only a few are special enough to actually accomplish that dream and make it in the pros. However, there have been many discussions in the past about how the underclassmen are ruining the game, with so many of them coming out early after they have played the regulated amount of years needed for them to move on. College has always been a privilege and it isn’t for everyone, as we all know. Athletes who are special and have the talent to make, which there are fewer than there actually may seem, have the chance to make it with their talent and create a business with them. However, you see time after time, players serving their 1 year college rule (basketball) or 3 year college rule (football), then all of a sudden, leaving quicker than they could say good-bye to their campus. As said before, college is a privilege to not only athletes, but to all students and ev-

eryone should treat it like that. However, you see these players serving their time, especially in basketball, and then leaving after they have barely learned anything, just using the college step ladder because they have to. There are so many other athletes out there and students that could use those scholarships to make the best of them, live out the dream that they have wanted to, play for a school for four years and graduate with pride. These high class players, who even get treated like stars in high school before they even enroll in college, are just looked at as icons that we all know are just using the college step for one thing. Now, don’t get me wrong, there are some players out there that have a great deal of talent, that can make it on their own and make it in the professional world of sports. But those talents are becoming fewer and fewer every year, seeing these talents jumping to quick to the next level before they actually have a chance to develop and become the best player that they can. You can never rush things in life but everyone in the world today is looking for the next big thing and now that the media these days are blowing up these athletes into stars, no wonder

THE GAME
these talents get big headed. All I am saying is that if you have the special talent and everyone knows it, then there is a chance for you to succeed without college. On the other hand, not everyone needs to go the first chance they can with they see the money sign. The underclassmen are ruining the chances of so many hopeful other athletes that have stuck it out for their college degree, hopefully fulfilling their dream in the pros. However, they do have something to always fall back on and that is their degree, which you see many athletes fail in life when their talents don’t carry them to the top and they come crashing down under a rock. If you don’t plan are using your scholarship the way it was intended for it to be used, please save it for the next athlete that will show commitment to their team, coach, and school. There are so many of us that would love to be in your position, so let these athletes have the same chance as you or make the best out of a great opportunity, in the way most athletes would use it as.
