SPIDER MAN 2 It’s great to be Spider-Man. For Peter Parker, there’s no feeling quite like swinging between skyscrapers, embracing being the hero, and spending time with Gwen. But being Spider-Man comes at a price: only Spider-Man can protect his fellow New Yorkers from the formidable villains that threaten the city. With the emergence of Electro, Peter must confront a foe far more powerful than he. And as his old friend, Harry Osborn, returns, Peter comes to realize that all of his enemies have one thing in common: OsCorp.

GOT A SMARTPHONE? BY BAREFOOT WADE

If you’ve ever met me in person, then you know I’m a little weird. I have several idiosyncrasies which (fortunatly) most people find interesting. So here’s one you might not know. I’ve never owned a smart phone. I have all the reason and resources to get one, but i’ve been on a personal (and possibly silly) protest against them. Now of course there are numorous advantages to having a smart phone, especially when you spend most of your time on the road like I do. So why have I been adamantly against owning one? Because I don’t like the fact that every aspect of our life now revolves around being online. I think the world feels it would fall apart if we couldnt be online 24/7. We’ve existed just fine as a human race with out instant access to social media sites, email, and other internet related things. And there are moments at every party when I look around and realize that everyone is glued to there phone. This makes no sense to me. Why give up the excitement of the “here and now” just to talk to someone who was apparently to lame to be there in the first place (LoL). I try and make a point to go a couple days each week with out getting online and I take regular breaks from Facebook for a week or so at a time. And I know that once I got a smart phone those days were over. So I have been on a mission to hold out as long as possible and defy societies expectations of how I should properly live my life this day and age. Well, last week I finally broke down and got an Iphone.

SEVEN LIONS BY JAK KRKOSKA

Greetings, fellow Greenvillites! My name is Jak Krkoska, and for those of you who don’t know me, I am a sophomore at ECU and will be one of your new writers for G-VEGAS Magazine! I’ll be covering Electronic Dance Music (EDM) events, so get ready, because I have your first review right here! Two words: Seven Lions I am happy to say that this was the first event I was able to go to where I actually had at least a bit of knowledge about the night’s performer. (Aka, I stopped being lazy and came out from under my rock!) Fortunately, he also happened to be one of my favorites! Starting as drummer for a punk-rock band, Jeff Montalvo eased his way into the EDM field, where it is my hope that many of you enjoy him today! Eventually, Montalvo adopted the stage name “Seven Lions,” which comes from a character in the book Latro in the Mist, written by Gene Wolfe. To the night. As always, the Charlotte venue “The Fillmore,” was packed on this particular Saturday of April 12th. We had all come with high expectations, but the thorough staff did an excellent job preparing for us. There were local DJs preforming at the time, and the crowd was getting pumped. Time passed and suspense continued to build to an almost breaking point – where was our guy? Then I heard it. Strangers, a Seven Lions original, blasting through the rooms of the Fillmore, and shaking the entire city! Turning my head, I caught my first glimpse of our man of honor – I saw Seven Lions’ lion’s mane of hair that went down to his shoulders, flying all over the place as he raged on the stage. It was unforgiving. It was unforgettable. It was fantastic. The crowd was instantly captivated, and stayed so all night long. With lightshows that were synced to the music, as well as many small performers in the crowd, it was truly complete. Adding his own remixes of certain songs, such as Zedd’s Find You, Seven Lions was able to create a wonderful sense of unity and love within the crowd. While the music played, I was able to not only enjoy myself, but also meet many people from around the country, who had come to witness this wonderful performance! At the end of the night, Seven Lions came out of his DJ booth to meet a screaming audience. Those lucky folks in the front were able to meet an amazing artist. (One of my friends was even able to give him one of her bracelets! Talk about jealous!) All in all, it was a perfect night, and I want to leave you all with the words of a song played, that truly captured my mind and passion.

ARE YOU A LAKE OR A BEACH PERSON?

BY KRYSTAL CLEGG

In North Carolina the lines are drawn pretty clear and we Carolinians will debate on just about anything. One thing you can take to the bank is everyone, and I mean everyone, has an opinion one way or the other. There are no in-different types around these parts. We debate about our barbeque, Lexington or Eastern Style, we debate about our basketball, Duke or Carolina, we definitely debate about our politics, Grand Ol’ Party or Southern Democrats, and we even debate our vacation spots, the Lake or the Beach. Party lines are drawn pretty tight and at times it gets

g-vegasmagazine | 13

a little hairy depending on which circle you find yourself in. We here at Overton’s can’t solve the barbeque mystery or weigh in on the Tobacco Road rivalry and we aren’t going to touch politics with a 10 foot gaff but we are pretty bi-partisan in one area: we have everything you need for both the beach life and those lake days. We have two stores that reside on each side of the great I-95 divide and we want every boater, shore dweller, cable rider, fisherman or fisherwoman to feel the love in our stores! We have every-

thing you need no matter which body of water you have pledged your allegiance too. This summer when heading to the lake or the beach remember both Overton’s stores. Our store in the west resides in our capital city just inside the beltline at 3062 Wake Forest Road Raleigh, NC 27609 behind Trader Joe’s. Whether you are about to hit Highway 70 on the way to AB for those cobia that are beginning to bite or you are headed out to Hexagon for a little cable action, we have you covered. Stop by and see Kevin and his crew!

Our store in the east has allegiances that run pretty deep. With Lake Gaston just a good playlist away, the Tar and Pamlico in it’s back yard and the Crystal Coast only a short drive down Highway 43, the Greenville Store loves all shapes and sizes when it comes to bodies of water; fresh, salt, brackish, manmade or heaven sent, it’s all fair game when the fish are biting or the boat is throwing a beautiful wake on a warm May day! The Greenville store is located at 111 Red Banks Road Greenville, NC 27858 near the Target shopping center. Drew and his crew are well stocked with tubes, life jackets, rods, reels, soft baits, hard baits, frozen baits, live worms, engine oil, boat wash, wakeboards, wakes skates, wake surfers….get my drift? We know water. Our staff is just as passionate about their boats and their hobbies as you are, come by one of our stores this season and let us outfit your next trip to the shore – which ever shore that may be!

FREE WAYS TO IMPROVE YOUR STYLE

SOURCE: BY JIAN DELEON AND MATT SEBRA AT WWW.GQ.COM

Who says you have to spend a million bucks to look well—like a million bucks? Hell, you don’t even have to spend anything if you use a few nifty wardrobe tricks. Sometimes the most stylish solution to your wardrobe conundrums isn’t with something new, but using what you’ve already got in a brand new way.

Learn How To Sew

Every guy should know how to make little fixes with a needle and thread, like replacing lost buttons or patching holes. A little effort to learn will pay off big time by adding some unique character to your clothes. Your fixes don’t have to be perfect—and that actually makes them cooler, and a bit more personal.

Wear Old Things in New Ways

Instead of shelling out your money shopping, spend time rethinking your current closet. Unused fishing lures can be repurposed as lapel pins. Use a bandana as a pocket square. Your vintage rock tees? Wear them underneath a suit jacket with black jeans and beat-up boots for a dressed up look that’s anything but stuffy. All it takes is the confidence to know you can pull it off.

Develop a Grooming Routine...and Stick to It

Style isn’t all about the clothes, it’s also about taking care of your body. What good is an expertly tailored suit when you’ve got a unibrow and rough complexion? The secret behind many stylish men is a morning routine. Washing your face, keeping your skin moisturized, and keeping up with nail clipping all go a long way into making you look as healthy, youthful, and handsome as possible. Hey, the opposite sex goes through a lot more to look good for us, so it’s the least we can do. g-vegasmagazine | 17

Exercise

To put it simply: Clothes look better when your body’s top form. It’s true whether your biceps are filling out the sleeves of an old t-shirt or your shoulders are giving an summer weight unconstructed sports jacket something to rest on. You don’t need the best workout clothes or even a gym membership to get your ass in gear. There are plenty of ways to work out at home using basic resistance exercises that’ll let you feel the burn everywhere but your bank account.

Shine Your Shoes

Polishing your shoes takes just a few minutes but offers a huge upgrade below pant hems. Don’t know where to start? We’ve got you covered. You don’t even need to spend hard-earned cash on one of those microfiber buffering cloths either; just recycle the insides of old sweatpants to make your well-worn kicks look fresh-out-the box buffed. Same goes for keeping your kicks looking like new, too.

Turn Old Jeans Into New Patches

Before you go donating old pairs (or cut them into jorts), consider keeping some of that worn-in denim fabric around to patch up your current favorite pair when they need it, like blown-out crotches, scuffed knees and busted pockets. Or skip the waiting part and make your own pair of patchwork jeans. They’ll have the same handcrafted feel as ones we love from Junya Watanabe or Ralph Lauren, but the only investment you’ll have to make is time.

TASTE

FRESH RECIPES Chicken Dumplings Ingredients Ingredients 1 whole store-bought roast chicken (about 2 pounds) 2 tablespoons vegetable oil 1 container (7 ounces) chopped onions 6 cans (14 ounces) low-sodium chicken broth 1 teaspoon poultry seasoning 1 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon ground pepper 1 container (14 ounces) pre-cut carrot sticks, chopped 1 container (14 ounces) pre-cut celery sticks, chopped 1 roll (16.3 ounces) golden buttermilk biscuit dough 1 can (10.5 ounces) condensed chicken gravy Directions Remove skin from chicken and shred meat into large pieces. Set aside. In a small frying pan, add vegetable oil and heat over medium heat. When oil is hot, add chopped onions and saute until soft. In a large pot or Dutch oven, add broth, poultry seasoning, salt, pepper, carrots, celery, and sauteed onions. Bring to a boil. Reduce to simmer for about 10 minutes to soften vegetables, and then add shredded chicken. Continue to simmer while making dumplings. While stew is simmering, prepare dumplings. Open can and remove biscuits. On a lightly floured surface, roll each biscuit to 1/4-inch thick. With a knife, cut each biscuit into 4 pie-pieces. Set aside. Skim surface for any scum that has risen to top. Stir in chicken gravy. With the stew still simmering over low heat, stir in dumplings a few at a time. Once all dumplings are in to pot, cover with a tight fitting lid and cook for 10 minutes. Ladle into bowls and serve piping hot. SOURCE:www. http://www.foodnetwork.com

LIFE

Things You Never Appreciated About Your Mom Until Your 20s Moms! How we love them (now that we’re old enough not to HATE THEM because they’re SO UNFAIR, I’M GOING TO MY ROOM TO LISTEN TO ALANIS). Lets count the ways because Mother’s Day is approaching, and you need to remember to call. 1. Her food is amazing. Remember before you left the house for college, when you were bored with her homemade eggplant rollatini and whined that you wanted to go to Baja Fresh? Yeah. Now you crave that homecooked food every time you have one of your own semi-edible stir fry dishes. And even if she doesn’t cook, eating greasy takeout while watching SVU with her is equally comforting. 2. She’s generally right about things. Boys, jobs, apartments, hairstyles, whether to splurge on the professional pantsuit or the freakum dress — basically everything. Moms are #psychic. 3. She’s fun to talk to. On the phone. For three hours. Every mom has a billion opinions, and people with opinions are the most fun to chat with. 4. She is an expert of the kind of cute little homey accents that make a house a home, and inspires you to do the same in your starter apartment. Basically, she’s a font of #AnthropologieHacks. Yo what up, it’s your girl Young Puts Scented Soaps In Clothing Drawers! 5. She’s an accidentally hilarious text messager. 6. She’s the Horse Whisperer of finding random crap you mis-

placed in the house. The Crap Whisperer. Yes, it STARTED because you were too lazy to look yourself and told her that she was just “much better at finding things,” but now it’s not about laziness — you really just need her to find things. (Whatever it is, it’s between the couch cushions.) 7. She listened to all your middle school drama bullshit as if they were things that would actually matter in five years. With such solemnity and care that it’s almost like you are talking about the state of global warming instead of a Livejournal fight you’re having with Stephanie Horowitz over Jeremy McNamee. 8. Decisions she made about raising you, even when you were a pain in the ass about them, made you the successful, amazing, ~*~*lOvELy~*~* person you are. If she hadn’t forced me to study for tests and quizzed me with flashcards — which inevitably led to fights. 9. She’ll give you reality checks when necessary. Honey, you don’t have insurance and you live in a 200-square-foot windowless hole, this is not a good time for you to get a dog. 10. She indulged all the passing childhood phases/obsessions you had. Ice skating phase? ($). Ballet phase? ($$). Anime phase ($$$ plus the endless embarrassment that cannot be fiscally quantified). Getting out of gym by pretending you sprained your ankle phase? ($$$$$ in bone scans to keep up your lie).

KICK FOR THE KORNEGAYS! BY DAVID JURY

Beating Cancer and Adrenoleukodystrophy. The Kornegay family is a young family of four facing significant medical challenges. The father of the family, a two time brain cancer survivor, has had a reoccurance of cancer while the ten year old son, Gabriel, has recently been diagnosed with a degenerative genetic diease. Gabriel was planning to have a rock climbing party for his tenth birthday on February 3, 2013, but, instead, he spent his birthday in the Duke Hospital Children’s ER. The family and doctors first thought he had a nasty case of the flu, but medical tests raised several red flags. On February 21, Gabe was diagnosed with a rare, degenerative genetic disorder called Adrenoleukodystrophy. This disease causes destruction to the adrenal glands and demyelinzation of the brain, nerves, and spinal cord. Gabe will likely be a candidate for a bone marrow transplant in the future. His journey can be followed at www.gabrielald.blogspot.com Gabriel’s father, Cutler, is a two time brain cancer survivor. On his 23rd birthday, September 30, 2005, he had his first brain surgery, On February 2, 2009 he had his second brain surgery followed by

a year of chemotherapy and radiation. Cutler was cancer-free until May 1, 2013. He had begun to experience seizures again in the spring of 2013 and at his scheduled MRI check-up on May 1, his doctors spotted a new tumor. Cutler will be undergoing a year of chemotherapy to battle his reoccurance of brain cancer.
