How To Survive Thanksgiving BY RANDY MOORE
Thanksgiving is upon us, and it’s my favorite holiday. There’s food, family, and a country-wide excuse to lounge on couches. But it isn’t all fun and games on Turkey Day, and I’m here to guide you through the pitfalls you may walk into as a college student.
1. DRINKING IS A TRAP
One of the prime joys of coming back from college is the knowledge that now you can drink good stuff, all on your parents dime. A glass of wine or three and all the Sam Adam’s Seasonal you can stomach. It warms you up, makes family more fun, and it’s tradition. What could be better? The thing every college student forgets though is the differences of cultural drinking. In college, it’s acceptable to drink in bulk and quickly but at home, not so much. There are much fewer keg-stands in suburban homes. Similarly, everyone thinks your fourteen. Sorry, but it’s true. Your older siblings, parents, uncles, aunts, grandparents; all of them think you’re younger than you are. So while they’ll encourage you to drink and crack a beer with them, be careful not to let one or two slip to five or six like it would in college: even in this celebratory atmosphere, different non-college standards apply and suddenly it’s “inappropriate” to chug the wine and rap-battle your uncle. Squares.
2. AVOID THE CLASSIC PITFALLS
4. BE PREPARED.
Do not talk to your parents about politics. Do not try to explain to them how majoring in “Rap Battles” is a solid post-college plan. Do not get caught smoking weed before thanksgiving so you can eat as much as possible and then you’re just giggling at the cranberry sauce. Instead, make it easy on yourself and keep it simple: family, food, couches.
3. GET FRESH AIR
You will go stir crazy. This isn’t a “maybe” type deal. Even if you don’t notice it until you’re scratching at the windows, you’ll end up feeling cooped. It’s inevitable. So go out for walks and get fresh air, fresh blood, and different people and things to do than sitting with family digesting. That’s fine for a little while but around hour three you start to feel like you’re decomposing.
When it comes to the holidays, even if you enjoy them, there are downsides. Being with your family can be stressful for everyone. As a younger sibling, you may resent being thrust into the child-role again. As an older sibling, you might get tired of being held to an unfair standard as a model for your younger ones. As a middle sibling you may be resentful because, ha ha, you’re the middle sibling. Either way, you may experience stress and- gulp- feelings. Relax, accept them, and move on. Just don’t be caught off-guard.
5. HAVE FUN
It’s not about lists, worries, or anxieties in the end. It’s Thanksgiving. Have the extra piece of pie. Nap. Mix some whiskey with apple cider. Enjoy. It’s one of the prime joys in life to just decompress from all the stresses of college life and to recenter yourself fully. Do it and vibe it out.

LIFE
APOSTASY BY CHRISTINA RENDANO
Megosh exploded on to the scene in late 2011 with their very own unique sound and have been capturing the hearts of fans ever since. Very few bands can incorporate several different styles and genres and have it all blend together organically. Their music and catchy melodies hold a certain youthful honesty and optimism highlighted by their guitar driven three-part harmonies. This is that one band you have to listen to for yourself to actually grasp and understand their engaging and individualized sound. Following the recent announcement of their signing to Outerloop Records, Megosh also announced their first full-length album titled ‘Apostasy’ that will be released December 16, 2016. If that was not enough for any Megosh fan to handle, they later dropped their debut track off the new album on October 14th, ‘I Stole from the Dead’. When I first heard this beautiful song, I thought I had caught a glimpse into what the rest of the album was like. I was wrong. Nothing could have prepared me for this unbelievable work of art! “Apostasy” is a beautiful collection of eclectic songs and each one paints/tells a very different story. Their art is well magnified in this album. I was captivated from the very first song until the last. I could tell they put EVERYTHING into making this album. In my opinion Megosh has matured musically, but they still hold on to their signature sound of beautiful harmonies and guitar riffs. Personally, I love knowing the history of a song; what it was written about or what story the song tells. So I asked Finch Flores (Guitar, Vocals) about a few of the songs and here is what he had to say, “Every song is about something different and YES we did put a
GVM | 11
little of EVERYTHING into making this album.” “Waste of Me” is about doing someone wrong in one relationship. Then in a different relationship, the same thing you did in the past, ends up happening to you. Basically, karma at its finest. “Ask Your Mother” is about a father who was not in his daughter’s life as much as he wanted to be due to the mother. They loved each other, but there were always complications.” This song showcases the astonishing harmonies of both Josh Grosscup and Finch Flores. Through this song you can feel and almost visualize the father’s pain and hurt. “Buffalo!” starts off with these almost mesmerizing lyrics “We don’t belong here in this house, the doors are sealed, it’s not for sale.” Finch explained that this song tells the story of a group of people who are happy just partying in a crowded apartment all day. Sleeping on couches etc.. Apostasy also comes with a guest collaboration with vocalist Garret Rappn from The Color Morale on the track “Carrying Fire.” Ever since this album landed in my hands, it has been on repeat. I was asked which song was my favorite and I honestly could not answer with just one song! Each song brings something different and that is what makes this album AMAZING beyond words.
Pre-orders for “Apostasy” are available now. All physical pre orders come with a signed CD! Pre-order yours right here at All In Merchandise! http://bit.ly/2ebyal4 www.megoshmusic.com

Magic City
Hippies BY ARRAN WRIGHT
Magic City Hippies, Miami’s Indie Funk Darlings, may be the best trio that you probably haven’t heard of yet. Made up of Robby Hunter, Pat Howard, and John Loughlin, Magic City Hippies have a slow, summer vibe that will kick off any “I Miss Summer Playlist”. Every song off of their Hippie Castle EP reminds you of a day at the beach and makes you long for the waves and rays. The band started out as a one-man street performer in Robby Hunter. When Pat and John joined they released their first EP called Magic City Hippies under the name Robby Hunter Band (this EP is equally great and deserves a listen). After joining forces, changing their name to Magic City Hippies, and releasing Hippie Castle in 2015, MCH has over 2 million streams on Spotify and their hit “Fanfare” went to #1 on Spotify’s Global Viral Top 50. All of this groups songs are a compilation of fun and funky, chill and groovy, easy slow vibes that keep you smiling from beginning to end. This is everything you didn’t know you were missing from your music library. I highly recommend checking them out on Spotify and giving your ears a vacation. Look for a follow up LP to be released soon. Stay groovy!

LIFE
SKIN CANCER... NOT ME!
BY RANDY MOORE
Like many people, I grew up loving the sun, sports and being outdoors. I craved that feeling of being warmed by the sun and having it bronze my fair skin. As a teen, I never thought playing in the sun and tanning my skin could be so destructive. When I was younger, it was all about just being outdoors. For me, that meant not always wearing sunscreen. Little did I know how stupid I was being. There is a very unsexy side of being in the sun, sunbathing and tanning beds. And I can tell you firsthand that not caring for your skin is a big mistake. I hope that you can learn from my lesson, rather than go through it yourself. My countless hours in the sun (many of which were unprotected) caught up with me eventually. What’s crazy, too, is that I didn’t even realize it at first. I had this dry, red, scaly patch on my the top of my head and on my chest. Even though the spot had been developing for years, I didn’t think anything of it. I thought it was just from a insect bite or adult acne. I then went to my dermatologist the following week to find out for sure. They took a biopsy, and sure enough, I had skin cancer (basal cell carcinoma). I couldn’t believe it. I thought that only happened to people who were much older than me. I definitely was not prepared to have my head and chest sliced open and cancer taken off of my face. A few weeks later, my dermatologist performed Mohs surgery to remove the GVM | 19
cancer. My head and chest were cut open about the size of a quarter to remove the tumor. He told me that it was imperative I had it taken care of right away. I also had to have a few radiation treatments which are not something I wish anybody has to go through. My doctor said that the jury is out on whether my skin cancer was due to sun exposure at a young age, a burn or just chronic sun exposure over a number of years that made me predisposed. He performs about 10 Mohs surgeries a day, and told me that this specialized treatment offers the highest cure rate, but only if detected and treated early. His patients are normally in their mid-60s but also has seen numerous patients in their 20s and 30s. The good news is, skin cancer is preventable and curable when caught early. Of course, we all want to be outside enjoying ourselves, but you have to be smart about the exposure you get. So, let me be your lesson. Don’t wait until you have skin cancer before you protect yourself and wear sunblock. Do it now. I don’t like the scar on my head or chest but I must live with it because of choices I made not to wear sunscreen. Other people tell me they can’t even see it. On the flip side, my scars represents what I went through and definitely keeps me in check. Every day when I look in the mirror, it’s a reminder to put on my sunscreen.
spire them. Wearing sunscreen and protective clothing in the sun, and limiting your exposure to the sun and tanning beds isn’t scary. It’s smart. It’s responsible. I wasn’t smart or responsible in the sun growing up. I hope others can learn from my mistakes and be inspired to protect their skin, make regular appointments with their doctors and stay healthy. Even if just one person benefits from reading my story, it makes my hard times from surgery and radiation treatments plus my scars worth it. I wish I could have read a story like this when I was a younger and in college. It probably would have hit home a lot harder than just my mother saying, “Wear your hat and put on sunscreen.” To help prevent skin cancer, take the following precautions: 1. Wear chemical-free sunblock containing zinc and titanium every day. 2. Wear a hat and protective clothing. 3. Avoid being outside during peak sun hours. 4. Seek shade if possible. 5. Get an annual skin check by a dermatologist. 6. Stay out of tanning beds Remember not to be afraid to go to the doctor if you notice something changing on your skin, or that a mole has grown or changed in color. The sooner you see a doctor, the less likely it will be bad news.

WHY THANKSGIVING? Thanksgiving at Plymouth In September 1620, a small ship called the Mayflower left Plymouth, England, carrying 102 passengers—an assortment of religious separatists seeking a new home where they could freely practice their faith and other individuals lured by the promise of prosperity and land ownership in the New World. After a treacherous and uncomfortable crossing that lasted 66 days, they dropped anchor near the tip of Cape Cod, far north of their intended destination at the mouth of the Hudson River. One month later, the Mayflower crossed Massachusetts Bay, where the Pilgrims, as they are now commonly known, began the work of establishing a village at Plymouth. Throughout that first brutal winter, most of the colonists remained on board the ship, where they suffered from exposure, scurvy and outbreaks of contagious disease. Only half of the Mayflower’s original passengers and crew lived to see their first New England spring. In March, the
GVM | 21
remaining settlers moved ashore, where they received an astonishing visit from an Abenaki Indian who greeted them in English. Several days later, he returned with another Native American, Squanto, a member of the Pawtuxet tribe who had been kidnapped by an English sea captain and sold into slavery before escaping to London and returning to his homeland on an exploratory expedition. Squanto taught the Pilgrims, weakened by malnutrition and illness, how to cultivate corn, extract sap from maple trees, catch fish in the rivers and avoid poisonous plants. He also helped the settlers forge an alliance with the Wampanoag, a local tribe, which would endure for more than 50 years and tragically remains one of the sole examples of harmony between European colonists and Native Americans. In November 1621, after the Pilgrims’ first corn harvest proved successful, Governor William Bradford organized a celebratory feast and invited a group of the fledgling
colony’s Native American allies, including the Wampanoag chief Massasoit. Now remembered as American’s “first Thanksgiving”—although the Pilgrims themselves may not have used the term at the time— the festival lasted for three days. While no record exists of the historic banquet’s exact menu, the Pilgrim chronicler Edward Winslow wrote in his journal that Governor Bradford sent four men on a “fowling” mission in preparation for the event, and that the Wampanoag guests arrived bearing five deer. Historians have suggested that many of the dishes were likely prepared using traditional Native American spices and cooking methods. Because the Pilgrims had no oven and the Mayflower’s sugar supply had dwindled by the fall of 1621, the meal did not feature pies, cakes or other desserts, which have become a hallmark of contemporary celebrations.
HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

5 Ways to Reenergize Your Semester BY ANTONIO JACKSON
You came into the school year motivated, focused and prepared to take on the world. Now we’re more than halfway through the semester. You’re passing out in that 8AM class, engulfing rice bowls from Panda Express every other day and you MIGHT just have an itch to tell your friends “LEAVE ME ALONE!” Take a breath. Here are 5 Ways to Reenergize Your Semester! • CHANGE SEATS IN CLASS Perspective is everything. Even myself who prefers to sit in the front of the class found myself staring through the professor, trying SO hard to focus in that 9:30AM Finance lecture. Not hearing a damn thing the professor is saying. Now I sit in the very back. Ironically, that change in perspective has helped me be more attentive in class. Not to mention, at the end of class I get out the door a little bit quicker. • SCHEDULE IN SOCIAL EVENTS Humans are pretty weird. Somehow we can feed off the energy of others around us. Downtown twice, three, four times a week getting repetitive? Try a new crowd: Chill at the bar at Peas-
GVM | 23
ant’s pub on Thursdays and enjoy the live music performances. Those small trifolds on the dining hall tables? Read them! They actually have events! (Wow…) Find something that sounds interesting to you and just jump into it! In life, initiative is an agent of change. • CHANGE YOUR EATING HABITS Panda Express is addicting. Chik-fil-A? Even moreso. But both are greasy and fattening as hell. There’s no better way to motivate better decision-making in your life than WILLINGLY getting that grilled chicken over a burger. Or snacking on an apple instead of that Hot Fudge Sundae Poptart. Do better. Small changes make big impacts. • RENT-A-BIKE Again, perspective is everything. ECU provides a bike rental service for students. Not only does a bicycle change the entire pace of your day, but it’s a heart-healthy activ-
ity too! And let’s be real: You need to start preparing for that summer beach trip NOW. • TAKE TIME FOR YOURSELF Between classes, trying to maintain or improve that GPA, friends, and giving time to all those organizations, sometimes we forget to give time to ourselves. Complete and utter selfishness. Like to paint? Buy some cheap paint and tools from Dowdy and go to town! Or maybe take that bike you rented and hit the Greenville Greenway. Afterwards, drop by the Scullery on Evans and try a milkshake. Enjoy a solo movie at Hendrix. Whatever you do, just make sure you FIND YOUR PEACE. #KTGA Keep the Grind Alive.
