REAL PIRATES DRINK RUM It’s Saturday night and as college students pour into Downtown Greenville, a noticeably long line is building... By Midnight, it’s stretched the length of the entire city block. EVERYONE is scrambling to check out Greenville’s Newest Nightlife Destination... Rum Republic. What exactly is Rum Republic & why is there so much hype surrounding it? Our G-Vegas writers sat down with the Owner/Operator @ Rum Republic, Rob Oliver, to find out... G-Vegas: Tell us a little about Rum Republic... Rob: Rum Republic is Downtown Greenville’s Latest & Greatest Nightlife Attraction... But I’m probably a little biased. We prefer not to label ourselves as a “bar” or a “club”. We’re out to achieve something totally new & different. We’ve created the intimacy of a “bar” but maintained the energy that is usually associated with a “nightclub”. If anything, I’d describe it as a hybrid. G-Vegas: With a name like “Rum Republic”, We’re assuming that you carry quite a few different brands of Rum? Rob: Obviously, Rum is a specialty of ours and we offer a selection that is unsurpassed in Greenville. Light Rum, Dark Rum, Spiced Rum & even some exclusive Top Shelf bottles you probably won’t see anywhere else. G-Vegas: Where’d you come up with this concept & Why bring it to downtown Greenville?? Rob: As a college student at ECU, I probably spent way too much time with a rum drink in my hand and way too little in Joyner Library... But I never really appreciated Rum until I tended bar in St.Thomas for a few months. That’s where the Cruzan Rum distillery is. Down there Rum is more of a lifestyle than it is a cocktail. And while I was bartending there I realized that making people smile for a living is a pretty cool thing. It’s something that I take a lot of pride in. And when you look past the liquor bottle and start to really think that the first distiller in America was George Washington... the second public building ever built in America was a bar... And America’s Independence was discussed in bars... this is a really interesting culture of nightlife. Providing great nightlife to people is a really cool legacy to have. We’re trying to keep that alive in Downtown Greenville. And besides, Have you ever met a Pirate that didn’t drink Rum?? ;)

TRUE CRIME...IS THAT YOU? BY: SHAMAR ROUNDTREE
After moving publishers and changing names, True Crime: Hong Kong is now Sleeping Dogs but the game remains the same. You are Wei Shen of San Francisco Police Department who has come back to Hong Kong after a long absence to infiltrate the Triad, known as the Sun On Yee in an Undercover mission. Can Wei separate himself from the case without getting too involved? Once Wei gets in, he must do things that he doesn’t necessarily want to. He does make sure to be as non-lethal as possible. The Triad does catch on to this, and have outed undercover cops in the past who refuse to kill for the cause. So Wei must earn his place in Sun On Yee. Early missions have you do simple things such as collecting debts, and getting into fights while driving from place to place. Collecting vehicles isn’t about stealing them and storing them in a garage. You can’t buy from regular dealerships, but most go to less than reputable places and purchase cars that can be stored in your personal parking garage strewn about town and next to places you live. Later on you’ll earn an ability to have the Triad bring you one vehicle

tagged to your location. Now Wei is in deep. Sleeping Dogs follows a typical Hong Kong action flick formula: there’s drugs, hookers, racing, death, fighting, and a good amount of shooting. When the story and gameplay work together, you’re able to see it all work together. Unfortunately the story is very predictable and won’t leave you very surprised. When the big story moments happen, they are less impactful as a result. Combat is fast and fluid. Players of Batman Arkham City will feel at home though it is a bit scaled back. Button configuration is quite similar. You’ll have a base set of moves that you can execute. After a bit of practice you should be able to take on 5-7 thugs at a time without taking any damage. If you find certain collectables, you’ll be able to find new combos and moves to execute to make you do better. After a short time you’re let loose in Hong Kong to do as you please, take on missions, improve your fighting moves, and go on dates. Dates aren’t very varied but mostly focus on karaoke, taking pictures, or driving fast to satisfy the needs of
a woman who doesn’t like going slow. There are also a bunch of collectibles and things to do in the open world such as finding the fighting statues mentioned above, finding health shrines to boost your health, performing drug busts, hijacking armored vehicles for cash, or even hacking random cameras. Sleeping Dogs is top to bottom a really good story that shows its hand at every card that’s dealt. But through it all, it makes it one of the most enjoyable open world games that isn’t too crazy or too serious that gets in the way of having a good time. If you have a powerful PC, get it there for the HD Texture Pack. If not though, you’ll find a rewarding experience that challenges the duality of an undercover cop and being a Triad. System: PS3, 360, PC Rating: 8.5/ 10

The nights are getting a little colder, college football has kicked off, and the 1st hunting season is finally here – all is right with the world again! Summer you were a doll but it is fall’s turn – we’ve got some birds to shoot. September 1st marks the first day of dove season in North Carolina. Doves may not be the most prized game on the hunting circuit but they sure make for great target practice for Eastern NC’s 5th season – duck hunting. Archery season for deer begins September 8th in most Eastern counties with rifle season not too far behind coming in on October 13th. Between these dates and home football games – fall is shaping up quite nicely! Hunting apparel continues to evolve every year. Just when you think you have seen every product possible wrapped in Realtree AP or Max4 something new hits the stores. This year I am blown away by Under Armour’s presence in the woods. UA as a brand has really nailed the sports industry by thoughtfully crafting every garment to help the athlete at every stage of the game. They have taken that same tenacity and poured it into a lineup of gear meant for the outdoorsmen. The evolution of their evo scent line of cold gear is going to crucial for those early mornings in the tree stand. Since it is worn as a base layer is takes care of 2 basic needs for the woods: staying warm when necessary and keeping your scent on you and not around you. There is nothing like running away every buck within 100 miles because you went a little too

heavy on the Old Spice. Under Armour has also realized that the gentlemen are not the only ones in the woods. They have vamped up their women’s line adding flattering cuts and fun pops of pink here and there. 2012 continues to be a great year for firearms. Browning has reintroduced the A-5 which is the much anticipated return of the popular shotgun dating back to 1898. Designed by John Browning it was the first mass produced semi-automatic shotgun. It is said to be much “livelier” than the previous A-5 and blends modern technology with the classic design (better choke system and recoil pad fits right in with the old humpback design). It will be up to you all to decide if the A-5 lives up to the hype. Other notable brands of 2012 would have to be Savage, Ruger, and Mossberg. Savage has molded their line to accommodate everyone by finding the right balance between price point and quality. Ruger goes without saying – they have blown away just about every other manufacturer in sales due to their consistent quality control. They consistently listen and deliver to the consumer through quality guns that can fit any budget. Let’s not forget about the Italian Stallion – Benelli. The Italians have given us many things – beautiful women, ancient architecture, Maseratis but not much can compare to a Super Black Eagle II though. It’s just smooth! Last season was an odd year for hunting – with the lack of winter it threw everything off. Ducks weren’t flying and the deer were just as confused as we were. The conditions can only improve this winter and the wise guys are already predicting a lot of cold, wet weather. Now is the perfect time to get out the bows, shotguns, and rifles making sure they are properly sighted in and your aim isn’t too rusty.

WELCOME TO G-VEGAS! BASIC GUIDELINES AND WHAT TO EXPECT BY BAREFOOT WADE
The fall semester has started and most of us are getting back into our normal Greenville routines. But for some of you, this is your first experience in our fun and crazy town. Whether you are a freshman or a transfer from another college, you are finding yourself in Greenville for the first time. So here are some things to look forward to this year and some basic guidelines so you know what to expect: • Come up with an outrageously awesome costume for Halloween. • Should it snow, there will be a huge snowball war somewhere around campus. Find it and participate. But if a Police officer tries to break it up….they won’t find it humorous if you throw a snowball at them. • For the freshman: If you don’t have a car, someone in your dorm will...find them and make friends with them on the first day (if you can tell me what movie I stole that line from, I will gladly give you a G-Vegas sticker) • Condoms are easier to change then diapers…. • If you have no idea what to major in, just find a cool professor and take all of his/her classes...That’s how I accidently majored in Sociology =) • If you swim in Tar River, you may very well grow a third eye ball. • When you skip class, don’t play your guitar

on campus right in front of the window of the class you are skipping... apparently the professors didn’t find that as humorous as I did. • The Tailgating is just as fun as the game itself and just as important. • If any sign in Greenville says “No Parking”, you can still park there…just don’t be surprised when they tow you 5 minutes later and then charge you 250.00 to get your vehicle back. • If you drink and drive, you’re an idiot. • By a bicycle if you haven’t already. • There is live music everywhere...so go find it or it will disappear. • There is a strange but friendly character about town that doesn’t wear shoes. If you happen to see him playing music in a bar, feel compelled to go in and listen to him sing and entertain you. • The clock on campus does some really trippy things at midnight. • In the event of a hurricane, buy all the beer you can legally purchase and invite your friends over for the duration of the storm. • Believe it or not, it is possible to fit 40 people in a dorm suite party…..but the RA’s are eventually going to break it up. • Every Wednesday afternoon there is an outdoor market located downtown that people refer to as “The Umbrella Market”. • On April 20, Sup Dogs will have a big party.
Complete with a hot dog eating contest, live music and happy fun people. • In the fall, they have “Freeboot Friday” once or twice a month. This is where they block off some of downtown, serve beer, have live music and give away free things…..it’s awesome. • In the spring, they have “Pirate Fest”. This is where they block off ALL of downtown and lift the open container law for most of it. Then they employ pirates that roam around downtown drinking beer and having sword fights at random. While this is going on, there are plenty of other shenanigans such as cool costumes, bands, plenty of beer, food, clothes, jewelry and other such vendors ….it’s even more awesome-r then “Freeboot Friday” (Yeah, awesome-r isn’t a word but I’m using it anyway). In a nut shell, that’s pretty much what you… our new pirate friend…can expect for the 2012/2013 school year. I’m sure I left a few things out, but I’ll just close off by saying that you can go listen and watch the above mentioned “strange but friendly barefoot character” perform really fun music at the LIVE bar on September 22 and also every Wednesday at Pirates Den. And I hope that your college experience will be the best 7 years of your life.

WHY IS THE RUM GONE? BY: WILLIAM BENJAMIN COCHRAN
A worthy question, to be sure, the answer to which is hardly a mystery. The short version: because it’s mofuggin delicious, and anyone who disagrees with that statement is probably a backwoods nut-job who would also have you believe that Golden Corral is fine dining, tobacco is a vegetable, and abstinence feels way better than sex. The long version? Well, that requires a brief history on this most noble spirit. Rum is, among other things, a relatively new liquor. It was popularized after 17th century Europe exploited the Caribbean climate to produce sugar in its colonial holdings. Given the three month transatlantic voyage of the merchant vessels, it was only a matter of time before plantation owners and day laborers alike found a suitable use for the accumulating byproducts of the refining process. Idle hands are the devil’s workshop. And when idle island-dwellers mixed yeast with the leftover molasses from refining sugar, the ensuing fermented drink was aptly named “Kill Devil,” lest any mystics suspected actual collusion with evil spirits. Say what you will about the intrinsic goodness of human nature; history has shown time and again that we are a creature that will undeniably find a way to imbibe alcohol. Once word got out that an alcoholic by-product accompanied sugar production, the race was on to produce even more sugar and “Kill Devil.” More production meant more merchant vessels, and more merchant vessels meant an exponential influx of piracy. To protect its colonies, Europe sent naval frigates to fend off the pesky pirates. The naval captains found that their sailors were greatly emboldened by the local drink, and found this to be of great benefit during the heat of battle. This, of course, worked out famously for the plantation owners, as they now had a seemingly limitless market for their product. While the drink bolstered the nerves of the sailors while in combat, it also made them audacious at more peaceful times when gall was deemed as insubordination. Maintaining order on a naval ship was of utmost importance, and the drink was heavily diluted and administered to the crew as a daily allotment as well as for exemplary acts of service.
--Such a day, rum all out: --Our company somewhat sober: --A damned confusion amongst us! --Rogues a plotting; --great talk of separation. --So I looked sharp for a prize; --such a day took one, with a great deal of liquor on board, so kept the company hot, damned hot, then all things went well again.
On the other hand, pirates found their company to perform better when continuously intoxicated, and the lack of sufficient drink was grounds for mutiny. The men would start a “rumbullion,” or uproar, which was eventually shortened to “rum” when referring to the liquor. North Carolina’s favorite pirate, Blackbeard, recounts such an instance in a document which was believed to be his ship’s log:
I urge all of you to do a little experimenting this year—not just with rum, but with nightclubs, GVegas Magazine writers, and whatever else strikes your fancy. So everyone raise a glass as I leave you with words from the great British poet, Lord Byron, “There’s naught, no doubt, so much the spirit calms as rum and true religion.”

Rum has grown in popularity ever since. It is one of the most diverse spirits since many of the island regions have unique distilling processes. Unfortunately, you may not get to experience the wide variety of tasty rums since most places in Greenville serve cheap swill out of plastic bottles. But there is one recently opened venue that has assured me that it has the best selection of rum in downtown Greenville.

Wednesday the 22nd of August was alive with the sounds of talent at Hooligans Music Hall in Jacksonville, NC. Kicking the Night off was Down to this. A Local Band based out of the Havelock area formed together in 2008 they consist of Ray, XCARTERX, Steve and Nibroc. they definitely got the crowed hyped for the night. with Sponsors such as Dark Horse Percussion Splawn Amplification and Blac under their belt this band is already well on their way to making a name for themselves. there either, After the show they continued with the enthusiasium by signing autographs and taking pictures with their fans. All the bands were rocking through out the night they took the stage with full force they brought the energy and Talent to the stage. They all proved they are names to be remembered and forces to be reckoned with in the future.

WHAT’S ON YOUR MIND? BY:RAYMOND SHAW
I am excited to be affiliated with this great family. I appreciate what G-Vegas Magazine represents. G-Vegas not only caters to college students; it also reaches all citizens of the Pirate Nation. Although I am not a native North Carolinian, my father is and he was born and raised in Pitt County. After living in Connecticut for many years, he decided to relocate my family back to Greenville. Since being in this county and attending ECU, I have grown to love this area and feel connected to the spirit of the East. I have the privilege of interacting daily with deeply rooted members of the community with strong ties to this great city. Because of this interaction, I opened my first practice “A Ray of Hope Substance Abuse Counseling Center” in Greenville with the mission to foster and facilitate the needs of the people. I had a client inform me he had traveled the world in the military; but, there was no place like home, no place like Greenville. He also

mentioned many had tried leaving after attending school. Most chose to stay. But if they did go, they would often migrate right back G-Vegas. I need your help in making this column a great source of ready information to help raise awareness and educate everyone; not just students. I look forward to your honest input, comments and suggestions for column ideas. I would like to share with you what’s currently on my mind. Another school year has just started and with it the economic boom that the returning students bring to many local businesses. Those businesses catering to the exciting experience of watching football games and supplying alcoholic beverages for tailgating benefits and help to increase the profits that keep our city economically sound. These are good times and we want everyone to enjoy them. But I would be remiss in not mentioning the real serious and dangerous issue of irresponsible consumption of alcohol known as binge drinking.
The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism defines binge drinking as a pattern of drinking that brings a person’s blood alcohol concentration to 0.08 grams percent or above. Most binge drinkers are not alcoholics; but, there are very real dangers to binge drinking. There is the risk of unintentional injuries such as car accidents, drowning, falls and burns. Intentional injuries such as gun violence, domestic and sexual assault, bar fights, vandalism, theft and robbery. Because alcohol impairs your judgment, you also have an increased risk of sexually transmitted diseases and unintended pregnancies. Our goal is to make it safe for everyone to enjoy the autumn activities without endangering themselves or others. My closing piece of advice for all of you is, please drink responsibly and be cognitive of the fact that moderation will play an integral role in everyone enjoying this football season.
