FOOTBALL KICKOFF PARTY BY DUSTIN T. BECK Every year, Pirate Radio 1250AM throws a football kickoff party marking the beginning of football season here in eastern North Carolina. We at G-Vegas Magazine reached out to Troy D & Ellerbe of the popular radio segment “Live @ F¡Ve”, for an opportunity to publicize this event. They were gracious enough to allow us in and to give us the creative freedom to portray the event in a unique light. My first impression upon walking into the venue was one of awe. Right in the entryway there stood a beautiful ice sculpture with the Pirate Radio logo frozen in the middle. After I took in the sculpture I began to appreciate the vast amount of work that was put in to making this event happen. There were three projectors to the right of the door showing college football and highlights, and to the right was the main attraction....the music. The featured entertainment was “The Main Event Band”. They were playing fantastic live music, and even a DJ playing dance music during intermissions, the mood was always upbeat and cheerful. We heard songs varying in genre from 70’s Rock up to modern hip hop. The pinnacle of the dancing, however, was when the whole crowd was being led in the wobble by Jeff Blake. This isn’t the first time Jeff Blake has led a group of rowdy pirates, as he was the star quarterback in the ‘91 Peach bowl victory against our in-state rival NC State. After a successful career in the NFL, including a pro bowl appearance, he decided to come back and give his alma matter some love. He wasn’t the only memorable “Jeff” in the building, as we also heard speeches from the voice of pirate radio Jeff Charles, and our strength and conditioning coach, Jeff Connors. He got everyone pumped up with a round of pirate jumping jacks. Lastly, Steve Whetzel (the pirate) followed suit by leading the crowd with a pirates anthem. This was an amazing experience, and I’ll look forward to many more. All I can say is LET’S GO PIRATES!!!

LIFE
BETTER IN
THE FALL BY RANDY MOORE
Each season has its perks, but none quite like the fall. The days where every step we take results in pounds of sweat falling off our bodies are long gone. It’s time to relish the crisp, cool weather this time of year brings. It’s time to turn off your air conditioners and to open your windows! There’s no denying that the weather is perhaps the most anticipated part of the fall, but honestly there are so many more great aspects. Here are some reasons we should be looking forward to the fall season. The NFL Thank the Lord, baseball season is almost over! Finally we can concentrate our efforts on a sport that actually matters. Sunday afternoons take on a whole different meaning in the fall: one filled with wings, fantasy leagues and beer. However, ladies, your boyfriend will be MIA come these fall Sundays.
• NEW STYLES
Ah, the time to whip out your favorite sweaters and riding boots. This is the time to bust out your best and most fashionable attire. Men — we love our sweatshirts and jeans. Ladies — it’s now time to whip out your favorite oversized hoodies.
• LESS HUMIDITY
Everyone enjoys a nice, sunny summer afternoon, but when temperatures soar to the mid-90s, it’s just one miserable experience. Men and women alike can relish in the cooler weather that the fall brings. We don’t have to worry about sticking to our clothing, literally, or sweating profusely on the subway. Women, we all know what less humidity means to you: better hair days.
• COLLAGE FOOTBALL
Who cares if your alma mater is good or not? This is the time to cheer on your college team. Most every city has a bar dedicated to specific colleges, so grab your jerseys and head down to cheer your team on. College football also gives you a great excuse to visit your old school and relive your glory days at epic tailgates.
• COOL NIGHTS
Your sleeping experience is almost guaranteed to be better in the fall. Everyone knows how difficult it is to fall asleep when it is hot and muggy in your bedroom. Throw on your favorite sweats GVM | 5
that you haven’t seen since February and cuddle up underneath your comforter that you can finally take out of storage.
• FALL FOLIAGE
Everything is just that much prettier in the fall. Sure, snow is great to look at, but it’s pretty damn inconvenient when you are walking to work. Summer may leave you nice and bronzed, but that doesn’t stop you from dripping sweat after every place you venture to. The changing of the leaves creates beautiful scenery as you walk through most any city.
• SEASONAL DELICACIES
Hot apple cider, Pumpkin Spice Lattés from Starbucks, and basically anything pumpkin flavored — enough said.
• LOWER ELECTRICITY BILLS
Bills, bills and more bills — ain’t nobody got time for that. In the fall, you more than likely aren’t going to be racking up intense electricity bills since the need for AC is long gone.
• YOUR FAVORITE TV SHOWS ARE BACK ON The much anticipated season premieres of your favorite television programs are airing in the fall. It’s time to put your Netflix account away, as the best shows are airing at this time.
• LABOR DAY AND COLUMBUS DAY
Who doesn’t like a good ol’ three-day weekend in consecutive months? Get out of work free card, thank you very much.
• BATHING SUIT SEASON IS OVER
Cast your diets aside and relish in your favorite foods, as you can just cover yourself up with layers and layers of sweaters. No one will be able to notice the extra five pounds you gained since August and honestly no one cares because they are doing the exact same thing. I mean, come on now, you have 9 more months to get back in shape.
• WARM FIRES
Whether you are cozying up to a good book or a homemade meal or your true love, nothing is quite as serene as hanging by the fire. After a long day at work, this can be just what you need to put your mind at ease. Honestly, Everything Is Just Better In The Fall!

Artist on the rise:
Jonah Wall BY SHAKYLA BETTON
Jonah Wall is a 21 year old student pursuing an illustration/art degree here in Greenville. He is originally from Havelock, NC and has developed a name for himself here and in other cities with his custom and original designs. Jonah has always had a passion for art, but got serious about it just a year ago. His favorite things to draw are people, characters, and cartoons. He draws anime characters like no other. His artwork is inspired by different renditions of characters and his emotions coming to life. He describes his brand as all over the place, because he is so diverse in the material that he can create. Jonah hopes to make money off his art and pursue his art career in California. Not only does he wish to make a living off of art, but use it to inspire people to want to better themselves. Jonah designs multiple items of clothing and actual paintings. One of his pieces that caught my eye was a hat with a wave painted on it that he calls, “The great wave”. His hat creations are truly one of a kind and leave me in awe with each new hand painted hat he designs. He also does custom artwork and paintings as well. Anything you name he can paint. On top of being an artist he enjoys doing photography as well. He works with models who are trying to build their portfolio and helps them gain self-confidence. All of his work is original and affordable for anyone. If you are interested in any of Jonah’s creations or want something custom made check out his Twitter @creative_aug or Instagram @thatshxtdead to see his unique creations and designs. For inquiries, you can email him at thatshxtdead@gmail.com and always remember to support local talent! They are the creators and the innovators of our society.

SOUND
GOOD MUSIC BY GOOD PEOPLE// VOLUME II BY CHRISTINA RENDANO
It looks like Revival Recordings nailed it again. This CD is a great compilation of Revival Recordings finest. It includes fresh new tracks from the labels very own Famous Last Words, The Funeral Portrait, and Alteras. Already released tracks from Alesana, Megosh, Cabaret Runaway, The Things They Carried, and Uh Huh Baby Yeah. Self released song “I’m A Mess by The Ivory. Also, included is a fresh new band, Artwork. First track is BLACK AND WHITE by ARTWORK. In my opinion, this is a great song to start off this CD. They are a fairly new band with a fresh sound. As described by lead singer Sky, “Artwork are a Bunch Of Kids From SL,UT Playing Loud Music And Throwing Temper Tantrums.” I have a feeling there’s more to come from these guys. Second track needs no introduction. PRETTY IN PORCELAIN by FAMOUS LAST WORDS is their first single off the highly anticipated CD “THE INCUBUS” release date is September 30th. This song...AMAZING!! Fourth track is THROUGH THE EYES OF URIEL by ALESANA and it is off “Confessions” from Alesana’s third and final installment of the band’s “Annabel Trilogy,” which is a story spanning their three concept albums and single, Fatima Rusalka. The sixth track is COULD EVER LOVE by ALTERAS. I spoke with Zak Orr, bassist of Alteras. “Could ever love, like the rest of our album “Grief” (previously released August 5th), is very honest. We poured our hearts and soul into this album from the grieving process. Basically we’re a bunch of guys from Youngstown Ohio (Steel city, the Rust belt) who cry a lot and love thrashing on stage.”
GVM | 11
Eighth track is BROKEN MAIDEN by CABARET RUNAWAY is a song that is intoxicating and leaves one wanting more. So I asked Andrew Dinger, lead vocals, of Cabaret Runaway to explain this song. “It’s a love song that is comparing the feeling of being infatuated with a person to the feeling of drug addiction. We wanted it to sound like a modern variation of grunge music at first even though the general sound kind of evolved throughout the writing process.” Ninth track is SOMETHING HUMANS CRAVE by THE THINGS THEY CARRIED. I personally fell in love with song before Steve Schwartz, singer and guitarist, explained the song is about one who is afraid to take the next step in life, due to the complications that he or she is currently facing. Tenth track is #NOFANSJUSTFRIENDS by UH HUH BABY YEAH. Kevin Fletcher, lead singer, explained “We wanted a song that gave back to our friends and followers in every way.#NOFANSJUSTFRIENDS took our saying/hashtag and made it into something special for those that have been there with us since the beginning. The sound just kind of came out. Once the song was written, the lyrics just wrote themselves.” Eleventh track I’M A MESS is off the self released EP “Gloom” by THE IVORY and it is about life, love, and heartbreak. The Ivory is the brainchild of sexy and sultry bassist of Alesana, Shane Crump. I decided against reviewing each song off this CD. I figured I had to leave something for you guys to check out yourselves. http://www.revivalrecs.com/

Friend or MOSQUITO? BY BRIAN GOINGS We all have that one friend who is impossible to please. No matter what anyone does they are not satisfied. They have to complain about everything. If this is you, you might want to stop reading right about now because it’s about to get real serious. Not to be rude or anything but sometimes you need to put this said “friend” in check and tell them to suck it up or move on. You may need to question whether or not this person is a real friend or just a mosquito in your life. All mosquito’s do is suck the life right out of you. And after they do that, they leave you with a bitter itch that you seem to not get over until it’s ran in course in your life. Makes you think you need to get some Bug Off or in this case Shut Off. Having people in your life that constantly oppose any and everything in your life will cause you to have trust issues. You will not want to trust someone that may want to help you because
GVM | 17
you have a certain way of doing things and that person MIGHT do something that will mess things up for you. You also don’t want to seem like you are a bore because said Mosquito does not approve of what you do in your spare time or shauns certain things. This is what you do…Get Over IT and do it anyway and Get Over them!! There are more people in the world that will help you and push you to achieve the things that you want to do in life. Without a strong support system you will always second guess yourself and try to please other people while you start to feel uncomfortable with your life and eventually depressed. In closing, if you have a mosquito in your life…smash that sucker till they know what it’s like to NOT be in your life and be pleased with the situation. People change and move on anyway and it’s best to do it now than to wait till you get too old to do anything and decide not to LIVE YOUR LIFE.

LIFE
Season 2 of Narcos is a slick, stylish delight Season one of Narcos was a sublime firecracker: a ten-hour gangster movie that applied the genre’s most satisfying cliches to the real life rise and fall of Colombian cocaine baron Pablo Escobar. Series two, which arrives on Netflix this week, is perceptibly darker. Last year’s faintly absurdist chronicling of Escobar’s ascension from small-time smuggler to internationally notorious multi-billionaire has given way to the grittier story of a dirty war raged for the hearts and minds of an unstable South American democracy. The switch in tone asks uncomfortable questions of the audience. Early on we knew who to root for, with DEA agent Steve Murphy (Boyd Holbrook) the whitehatted sheriff dispatched by Uncle Sam to help bring order to Eighties Colombia. As the story resumes, Escobar has escaped prison – a glorified holiday camp to which the authorities turned a blind eye – and is determined to rebuild his empire. On the back foot, he is more ruthless than ever, prompting Colombia’s new hardline President Gaviria (Raúl Méndez) to respond in kind. Reflecting the true-life trajectory of the country’s narco wars, there are atrocities on both sides. Murphy and his associates’ claim to the moral high ground is soon precipitous at best. This is a skilful sleight of hand by the show’s creators and writers Chris Brancato, Carlos Bernard and Doug Miro. An early scene in which ruthless police chief Carrillo (Maurice GVM | 19
Compte) shoots one of Escobar’s street urchin spies through the head (a warning to others in Pablo’s employ) is followed by him chucking two minor drug runners from a helicopter, an act with chilling echoes of the Argentine junta’s treatment of political rivals. Escobar was clearly a monster – but did that justify the monstrous response of the Colombian state?
caricature of the Hawaiian-shirted cocaine lord. He sings opera in the shower as, across town, his men shoot prostitutes in the head. Later, we see him dance tenderly with his wife while a wave of carnage is unleashed against the police. These are cliches straight from Coppola and Scorsese but which succeed here because they are deployed with verve and self-awareness.
As the bodies pile higher and higher, Narcos is shedding its action movie outer skin and evolving into something smarter and more ambiguous. In its first year, the show had played out like a wonky episode of Miami Vice in which Tubbs and Crockett follow the cocaine trail back to the source. But now the charm and swagger have been dialled down, with the viewer invited to consider how far a modern nation should be willing to go in order to extinguish an evil in its midst.
It is no spoiler to reveal that Escobar’s story does not end with a glorious ride into the sunset. As the walls close in and his fellow kingpins, sensing the shift in the winds, ally with the government, Narcos must juggle the difficult trick of keeping us in suspense even as the central character’s fate becomes clear.
As Escobar, Brazilian actor Wagner Moura again brings a Shakespearean heft to a villain who might have easily been reduced to a moustache-twirling cartoon. He had to put on nearly three stone to portray the obese drug lord but it’s with his eyes, not his burly physique, that he communicates Pablo’s complexity and slow-burning rage. Wagner Moura as Pablo Escobar A ruthless gangster who is also a caring family man is a stereotype started by Marlon Brando in The Godfather. Yet Moura, with his diamond-drill gaze and menacing silences, puts flesh and blood on the
The tension is maintained via a multitude of fictional subplots and minor-characters. A young mother is forced to go on the run after being (wrongly) accused of betraying Escobar. When Murphy’s wife walks out on him, he beats up a drug-snorting businessman in a blind rage. Amid the gun battles and the sex scenes, there is a documentary element to Narcos and you end up learning a thing or two about the War on Drugs as it was fought at street level in the Eighties (and presumably continues to be in present-day hotspots such as Mexico). But the factual elements never get in the way of what is above all a cracking yarn. This remains a slick, stylish delight – a romp that is the best kind of addictive. Tips College Freshmen Should Know • MAINTAIN A COLLEGE BUDGET
While students and parents are aware of the upfront costs of college, they should also be cognizant of hidden costs. Keeping a record of all expenditures will force students to be accountable for extracurricular spending, including clothes shopping and nights out with friends.
• BE PROACTIVE ABOUT FIGHTING COLLEGE STRESS
There are many things that can pressure new college students: making friends, doing well in class, and enhancing their résumé, to name a few. But freshmen may be able to alleviate some of this stress by getting enough sleep, exercising regularly, or seeking out counseling services on campus.
• GET ALONG WITH ROOMMATES
One major transition for many college students is adjusting
GVM | 21
to sharing a small space with other people. Roommates may be able to avoid issues if ground rules are set from the beginning. Having conversations about cleaning schedules or having friends over can ensure roommates are on the same page.
• CONSIDER GREEK LIFE
Freshmen who are worried about making friends on campus could consider joining a fraternity or sorority. Greek life exposes students to formal dances, intramural sports, and philanthropic projects, to name a few. But before joining, students should consider the pros and cons of Greek life.
• FIND CHEAP COLLEGE TEXTBOOKS
Full-time students spent an average of $655 on required course materials during the 2010-2011 school year, according to the National Association of College Stores. Before freshmen purchase textbooks at college bookstores, they should consider renting.

KICKING OFF
FALL WITH
A BANG! BY TREY SINGLETARY
When I first got word of the concert, I wasn’t too excited, as I am neither an Eric Church nor a Kid Rock fan. I assumed my main role would be that as a photographer. But little did I know, myself along with G-Vegas magazine would become an influential cog in the machine. As you all know, G-Vegas just celebrated its 10 year anniversary, so in honor of that, we gave out a ton of free tickets leading up to the event to show our support for live music and to those who have kept us going all these years…the students! The Carolina Kickoff started off with a bang. All that needed to be mentioned was “tailgate fields open at noon!” What more could an ECU student want?! It was probably the first time ever we set the freshmen off on the right foot with a tailgate this early in the season. If you didn’t know any better you would have thought the purple and gold were suited up with Dowdy about to get rowdy! It has been a long time since ECU has allowed a concert in the stadium. I probably wasn’t even born the last time that happened. I think it went pretty well though, letting the students burn off some steam right before the start of classes. The opening acts were some lesser known up and comers, but they were all talented musicians. The theme of the day was “country” and for the most part that is what we got. Margo Price, Amasa Hines an Arkansasbased rock band, the Harris Brothers, and country-pop riser David Ray all performed on the big stage, getting everyone attending amped up for the main event. Just before dusk as the stands were starting to fill in, the first headliner got ready to kick it off. And I say first headliner because, yes, I think both Kid Rock and Eric Church were equally worthy of that title. It was just after 7:30 when Kid Rock took the stage. As soon as the curtain fell you could feel the energy he brought to the stage. From his wild antics to the leather-clad fans at the front row, you could see the excitement brewing all around. I don’t know how much of an American Badass he really is, but from his show you can tell he needs no help convincing himself. From the flames lighting up the stadium to his jumps and kicks,
GVM | 23
he definitely kept everyone on the edge of their seats as they watched. He played every hit song he ever wrote, and I especially enjoyed his most ballad-like tune “Only God Knows Why.” As the Kid Rock set came to an end, night had engulfed the arena. Looking around, the stadium was packed, and you could see who the crowd thought was the more popular musician of this era. There were screams from all around the stadium as the light dimmed and the crew put its final touches on the set. The crowd was raucous as Eric Church busted out onto the stage. There was a huge energy all around, which was definitely felt from the side of the stage as I fought my way around to get some pictures. I didn’t even know Eric Church was our very own North Carolina country boy from Granite Falls, NC. You could tell many of his fans were coming from all over just to see him perform, since this was his only tour date in North Carolina. His onstage persona was definitely the opposite of Kid Rock’s flamboyant stage-show, but that did not detract from his connection with his fans. He seemed more of the cool calm, collective, so just “toss” me a beer type. As the show was winding down, you could begin to feel how the long day had taken its toll on just about everyone in attendance. For some it was surely a 12 hour or longer event. All in all the show was great, and I definitely feel sorry for anyone who missed it. However, if you are one of those few, you are in luck. Carolina Kickoff announced that there will be a second annual event next September, so stay tuned and follow G-Vegas Magazine on Facebook and Twitter to stay in the loop. The event was a great way to end the summer and an awesome way to kick off the semester for ECU. Many who attended are still talking about the Rock/Church event and how excited they are for this Fall Semester at ECU ! Let’s Go ECU! Let’s Go Pirates! Aaaargh!!!!!
