THE GAME

PLAY STATION4 By: Shamar Roundtree

INFAMOUS

On Feb. 20th in NYC, Sony had its yearly PlayStation Meeting which was attended by millions of people in person and online. Why so many? Sony revealed the PlayStation 4. Sony opened by telling us a little bit about how powerful the system is and how easy it is for developers to make games for it. PSN has evolved substantially, letting you record the last 15 mins of gameplay and post it to many social sites like FaceBook and TwichTV. Along with some hardware specs, Sony also revealed the Dualshock4. PS4’s new controller does not make too big of changes from the Dualshock3’s formula, adding a small touch pad on the face. The Start and Select button are gone and in their place are Share and Options buttons. The trigger buttons (R2 and L2) have been changed for the better (I hear).

KILLZONE

Not too much sold info about the system and controller was given at the meeting (not even what the system looks like), but there was a lot of game info there. Games like Watch Dogs, inFamous: Second Son, Deep Down and KillZone Shadow Fall, show the raw power of the system. I know there is not much here but I don’t want to tell you all something that is not set in stone yet, but there will be more shown at E3 this year. It would have been nice to see the console at the meeting, but they did say the PlayStation 4 will not block used games, and will be coming out this year.

HATER BLOCKERS WoodRoze Wooden Sunglasses

Today, in this still chilly month of March, let’s take a walk to a warmer place. Let’s go to a sunny Florida shop where 3 brothers are whittling away at bamboo making something you probably wouldn’t expect from wood…..sunglasses. Yes, sunglasses. I bring to you, wooden sunglasses. Make that wooden, floating sunglasses. Brought to by Woodroze headquartered out of Orlando, FL the brothers had an idea of making a pair of glasses that made a statement, were entrenched in their respect for Mother Nature, and provided superior performance to the wearer. They actually float (how many times have you done a nose dive into the river to save a pair?) are all polarized, and help protect marine life through the non-profit agency MOTE. A portion of the proceeds helps reef preservation!

g-vegasmagazine | 7

Woodroze have taken classic, often popular, sunglass frame designs and added their own flare. Each frame brings a little funk to the wearer while still maintaining its classic composure. The frames and lens combinations the guys thought of are pretty unreal. Red frames, white arms, and blue lens called the American? Yes please! Yellow frames with grey lens with a possibility of purple arms? Done! The more laid back styles include an awesome matte gray frame with a subdued lens called the “fire” and a brown stained frame with a sharp gray lens. The classics provide understated swagger which goes good with any look! Check Overton’s out for a pair of Woodroze and slip a set on. They are the only dealer in North Carolina! The glasses

don’t feel as you would expect wooden sunglasses to feel. I imagined a rigid feeling on my face that were heavy and didn’t have the ability to flex. All of those assumptions were wrong. The arms flex just as any other performance brand would, the wood is light and the frame conforms to your face just as a plastic frame would. My Nana said it best when I had her try on a pair of the Dozer’s. She told me they were “hater blockers” and I couldn’t agree more Nana. You wear your hater blockers proudly. Go check out a pair of you own hater blockers at Overton’s or visit www.woodroze.com.

LIFE

Better Know a Local Beer: Duck Rabbit Hamburgers, French Fries, and super-size sodas may be among the first things Europeans list when being asked about specialties in the American food service industry. Everybody on the old continent knows about the “deep fry” culture in the United States, and everybody knows that if there is one thing Americans don’t know how to make, it is beer. Well, as a first generation European immigrant to the U.S. I have to admit: Europeans couldn’t be more wrong. While only few large American breweries actually sell beer overseas, I found that it is the smaller local breweries that really make the good stuff and contribute to what my friend English Dave and I consider the true local North Carolinian beer culture. In this state alone, there are sixty-one local breweries producing a variety of local beers that would pleasantly surprise most average Europeans. After getting our first impression of local beers at the 26th Jolly Skull Beer Festival in Greenville last month, English Dave and I took it upon ourselves to visit Duck Rabbit Brewery in Farmville, NC, which is not only the closest to Greenville but also one of the most distinct breweries in the region. Duck Rabbit produces a variety of different beers: Duck Rabbit Amber Ale, Duck Rabbit Brown Ale, Duck Rabbit Porter, and Duck Rabbit Milk Stout. Furthermore, the brewery’s owner Paul Philippon stated

g-vegasmagazine | 9

that “now that higher alcohol beers are legal in NC, we have started a program of limited release seasonal specialties.” The first one, Duck Rabbit Russian Imperial Stout, was released at the end of December ‘05 and closely followed by Wee Heavy Scotch Ale. Though impressed with each and every one of Duck Rabbit’s great beers, English Dave and I agree that the Russian Imperial Stouts were the most impressive. Besides touring the brewery in Farmville, Duck Rabbit offers visitors a good atmosphere and direct insight into the different types of beers in its very own bar located inside the brewery. While we Europeans always knew that philosophy and beer go hand in hand, we were thrilled to learn that Paul used to be a philosophy

professor prior to entering the brewing business. In fact, Duck Rabbit’s name and logo are derived from Austrian-British philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein’s “duckrabbit,” an image that triggers different interpretations in the observer as one may see a duck or a rabbit depending on internal cognitive processes. If you haven’t done so yet, we strongly recommend you give North Carolina’s local breweries a shot, starting with Duck Rabbit’s various beers, which can be purchased at different locations here in Greenville such as Christy’s Euro Pub, A Tavola, Starlight Café, and Low’s Food. Quit relying on old stereo-types and give America’s local beers a shot. Cheers!

Spring is steadily on her way here and though the winter was not extremely brutal this year, I’m quite happy that this season is behind us. Which brings us to the question of “What’s going on this month?” Well of course some of you have an outrageous spring break destination in the works, but that only takes up one week of March. Fortunately, there will be some good music coming around Greenville again this month. Peasant’s is still keeping it real as the new hot spot in downtown Greenville. On March 8, local favorite “Matt Phillips and The Philharmonic” will be playing there. The following night (March 9) “The Dubtown Cosmonauts” will be returning to Peasants as well. These guys played one of the first nights that Peasants was open and they absolutely killed it!! This Wilmington based band has got a good thing going on. If you are a fan of the Jam Band scene, you should make plans to be there. The Spazz House will also be presenting their 4th annual music event here as well from March 21-23. On the flip side of things, The LIVE bar has some good events coming up as well. The

g-vegasmagazine | 11

Harvey Dalton Blues Band will be returning on March 8. Harvey Dalton used to play in the Classic/Southern Rock band “The Outlaws”. I did a show with them a couple months back and they are a good band to catch if you’re a fan of the blues. On March 9, Lex Luther will be taking the stage there as well. This band puts on a high energy 80’s Metal show. If you crank up your radio when “Crazy Train” comes on the station, you should mark this in your calendar. The following Friday (March 15) I’ll be doing my “One-Man-Caribbean-Jam-Band” show there for anyone and everyone who isn’t at a wild spring break destination. The next night, local favorites “Trainwreck” will be bringing us the Funk. Since there is a good chance that a strong percentage of people reading this article are musicians themselves, I should probably tell you where and when you can find an open mic to either show case your new band or just blow off some musical steam. On Monday’s you can catch an open mic at Peasants starting at 8pm. On Tuesday, David Dixon and some other local favorites host the traditional “Blues

Night” at A.J. M c M u rphy’s. T h i s normally starts about 9:30pm and rolls on till about midnight. While we are on the subject of A.J. McMurphy’s, it would be in my best interest to inform you that I’ll be playing there on Saturday March 30. Last but not least, each Thursday the LIVE Bar hosts a good open mic as well. It has been rumored (and widely accepted) that the above mention hosts of the Thursday open mic are a rare, mix breed of Sasquatch and Aliens that have been transplanted here directly from the Artimus Pyle band with the intention of playing the music that will save us all from the inevitable Zombie apocalypse. So the least we could do to show our appreciation is to show up at LIVE on Thursday and either play or listen to some tunes while enjoying the adult beverage of our choice.

ROCK REPORT By: Blando As the weather starts to warm up it’s time for our favorite season… CONCERT SEASON! This year has already seen some big shows hit the calendar, but by far the biggest show around is Carolina Rebellion and this year is the biggest yet! Carolina Rebellion started in 2011 in Charlotte. It was an all day show with Avenged Sevenfold headlining the massive lineup and it SOLD OUT. 2012 they moved it to Rockingham Motor Speedway to accommodate the enormous crowd which is rumored to have topped 50,000. They also added camping packages and a Friday Night Campground Party headlined by Foxy Shazam. The main show was headlined by Shinedown, with the highlight of the day being the reunion of Korn and former guitarist Brian “Head” Welch for the first time in SEVEN YEARS! Carolina Rebellion 2013 is back in Charlotte but this time at the Charlotte Motor Speedway. It will feature a list of bands that reads like a rockers bucket list: Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Deftones, Limp Bizkit, Papa Roach, Rise Against, 3 Doors Down, Three Days Grace, All That Remains, Volbeat, Sick Puppies, and dozens more. Now you may think “That’s gonna be a long day” well, it’s going to be TWO DAYS, May 4th and May 5th! 99.5 The X has already hooked several Xaholics up with tickets to the Rebellion and we’ve got TONS more coming your way between now and May 4th so keep listening, follow us on Facebook and Twitter, and sign up at 995thex.com for chances to grab tickets. -Blando

or many students attending ECU and locals not interested in the club scene of uptown Greenville there is an almost ubiquitous statement made that there is “nothing to do in this town.” Some years back a group of raising ECU students decided to do something about that very problem. After witnessing the collapse of several live music venues and unfavorable conditions they took it upon themselves to open their own somewhat, makeshift speakeasy for touring bands; thus, the Spazzatorium Galleria was born. After this too was closed down the remaining people associated with ‘the Spazz’ went on to form the annual event known as Spazzfest, a four day event set at several locations near and around uptown. The event will consist of acts such as Matt Philips and the Philharmonic, The Love Language, The National Rifle, Lonnie Walker, Aether Realm, The Kickass, Myself and I, Unifier and Future Islands. Having achieved success in their relocation to Baltimore, the current members of Future Islands got together with some of former ones to do a reunion show in Raleigh as Art Lord and the Portraits (a early version of the band).

Future Islands will be only one of the major acts from North Carolina featured. Also featured will be bands from Philadelphia and farther North such as On the Water, Norwegian Arms and Dangerous Ponies. Spazzfest also brings a number of reunion shows by Every Single Lie, Acirema, Among the Buried and The Winter Mission. The venues associated with the event will be Tipsy Teapot, East Coast Music and Video, Peasant’s Pub and Christy’s Euro Pub. There will be drink specials and even a Sunday brunch included for Golden Ticket carriers. The Golden Tickets grant access to all events, discounts on drinks and specials prizes. With nothing more than ingenuity to guide them, Spazzfest has gone

We got to sit down with Future Islands and talked about their return to Spazzfest and Greenville where they began. Nathan: Where did the idea of the Art Lord begin? Sam: Art Lord was a performance piece. Kimia: We didn’t know what we were doing. Sam: The idea began in the art building when I was pushy about how my friend should make his work. He looked over at me and said, “what are you the art lord?” The joke kind of grew from there.... The idea became playing a character on stage that was so full of himself because FUTURE ISLANDS people love famous people who hate them. It was social commentary on artists narcissism. Nathan: Why do you think Art Lord gained such popularfrom a one all day affair to a major, highly anticipated showcase of loity? What was your secret? cal and traveling talent. Greenville: More Than Meets The Ear We all know and love that downtown Greenville has an impressive party scene. After all, you can’t spell p-a-r-t-i-e-s without p-i-r-a-t-e-s. But what many people don’t know is that ECU students are doing more with their downtown resources than just drinking them. I spoke with Cameron Cotham, an ECU Senior and the manager of Greenville based band Matt Phillips & The Philharmonic. The band is made up of recent ECU graduates. Matt and Cameron met in Greenville through a mutual friend and their love for music created a friendship. Cameron credits downtown Greenville with helping the band get their start. “We play at Tipsy Teapot a lot. The last show we had at Tipsy the place was packed. The turnouts get bigger and bigger each show.” The downtown Greenville camaraderie is what helps make success possible for local bands like Matt Phillips & The Philharmonic. “It’s the people,” Cameron says. “It’s the Pirate Nation passion. It’s the local businesses that try to help you out. The businesses and venues lend helping hands. We have a good

product, they have a good product. It’s kind of like a ‘we scratch your back you scratch ours’ type of thing.” When Cameron isn’t busy studying English Education and managing a band, he indulges in the bar scene that downtown Greenville has to offer. “I love going to 519, Club Stilllife and Sup Dogs. Hanging out at my friends’ place in the Grid. You have the partying crowd who likes to go to the clubs. Then you have the crowd who just wants to hear some good music. I do a little bit of both.” With all that Greenville has to offer, why not indulge in both? Cameron set out to follow his ambitions and downtown Greenville helped turn them into a reality. When talking about following passions, Cameron encouraged other young people of Greenville to do the same. “You just got to push through it. If you run into a rough time, work through it. Pursue your passion. You just need to get up and do it. Don’t sit on the couch and rage out every weekend. Alcoholism is fun for a little while, but following your passion is what will really

pay off for you in the end.” Cameron intends to finish his college education and continue to manage Matt Phillips & The Philharmonic as their success grows. Matt Phillips & The Philharmonic will be performing at: Peasants Pub Friday, March 8th @ 8 pm w/ Ashley Gardner Spazz Fest at The Tipsy Teapot Thursday, March 21 @ 7 PM w/ The Winter Mission, FS, and Matt Recko Tipsy Teapot Sunday, May 5 @ 6 PM w/ South Carolina Broadcasters

Jah Creation: The Jimmy Jams Story By: Don Baker Wanna talk about a great guy and a great band? Let me tell you the story of Jah Creation. Now you must know that I have known these guys for 10 years. I first met them in Key West Florida and when I found out they were from Wilmington NC, I became an even bigger fan. The first gig they played was on April fool’s day in 2001, at a bar in Wilmington NC called Charley Browns. A place I remember well, however the last time I saw these katz was January 25, 2013. Remember the night? The big bad ice storm. Well let me say this, no ice formed on the roof of The City Bistro. Why? Well, the reggae was melting the place down. Now, first let me say that The City Bistro was packed, and the vibe was very positive. I even got up and danced to some of the original tunes from Jimmy and the Boys.

g-vegasmagazine || 21 21 g-vegasmagazine

I caught up with Jimmy last week and had a great conversation with him. You must know that Jimmy started out playing heavy metal but when he heard Bob Marley’s Natural Mystic, it transformed him. When you talk to Jimmy you know that he is a very spiritual Rasta, also a University of Carolina graduate. He and his band take the whole reggae scene to a whole different level. Touring the east coast for the last 13 years, with kat’s like Carols International and Top Rank’n, he has a very diverse crew in his band. They all share the same love and passion for Reggae music and the Rastafarian lifestyle. The thing I like most about Jah Creation is they have great original music, sure they do some covers but the original Reggae is what makes these guys so hot. I spent over an hour on the

phone with Jimmy and now have a new appreciation for him and his band. If you ever get a chance to see Jah Creation it’s something you must add to the bucket list. I really wish I could have written more on our conversation, but I fear I would not do Jimmy justice. I will leave you with this: three Cd’s to their credit, 13 years together as one tight ass Reggae Band. Do yourself a favor check these guys out, they are back at The City Bistro March 3, 2013.
