LAW

By Bart Brown, Local Attorney Roberts & Brown, PA

Your Health and The Law So as I am seeking relief from levels of heat not seen in this region since dinosaur flatulence ceased, I found myself in little Washington on the Pamlico doing my thing on a stand up paddle board. My balance not being what it was in my younger days, I slipped off the board several times dodging crabs and an occasional turtle until I was able to get my sea legs going. Yay!!! BART BROWN Other than a little boobie burn from the board I came out unscathed and had a good time enjoying the river and all its accoutrements. That is until I came back under the bridge to make my way back to the dock. All of a sudden I see how dirty the water is and in certain places it has almost a sludge like consistency. This helps me to nix the idea of faking a fall off the board for comedic purposes into the I guess you would call it....gulp....water. Well after a mahi mahi sandwich and a lil libation at a local restaurant, I completely forget about the uncomely water until a news story rares its ugly head several days later making me see that it was not just my imagination. Not only that, there is talk of the filth in the water coming from treating a local sewer system which is extremely close to the river...WHAT???? Geeze, it’s enough to have to worry about amoebic dysentery when venturing out into the water. It’s plenty to To Advertise in Pro Fitness 24 The Magazine or on www.profitness24mag.com call 252.353.7324 Deadline for the Next Issue - October 15th Roy Hopkins - owner/operator/sales 252.341.6994 Pro Fitness 24 (The Magazine) Magazine is owned & operated by local entrepreneur and fitness expert, Roy Hopkins. see oil from a boat or jet ski hanging out near a dock and chalking it up to the price you pay for having fun on the river. But sewege... Ewe!!!! And to think, I fell in several times that day and ingested some of that so called water and come to think of it, the swim trunks sure did look a little dingy. Riverkeepers were quoted as saying that the recent heat and nasty storms has stirred up decaying vegetation from the river bottom, while an avid boater says its the same substance that he pumps out from his collection tank on his boat. Nice What we do know is that last August there was a sewage spill on 4th Street in Washington which made its way to the majestic Pamlico. We also know that Irene stirred up and made a general mess of the river when she came through as well. There is not a lot we can do about natural disasters clearly, unless you believe that solar panels and a Chevy Volt will prevent these things from occurring. On the Sewage side of things, the state has regulated our waters to the point that list of regs makes the tax code look like a Dr. Suess book. You used to could enjoy fishing with your kids and the like, but now you almost have to bring a law firm on the boat with you to avoid being afoul of the law in some form or fashion. I guess the solution boils down to common sense as with anything else. Natural disasters are going to occur. Accidents are going to happen. If people or companies are doing things to endanger the waters and thereby people and or wildlife purposefully or recklessly, then that type of behavior needs to punished. But don’t choke the waters off to the public with such onerous regulations. Its enough for me to try and stand on the paddle board on my own, without 2,000 pages of regulations from the NC Department of Environment and Natural Resources accompanying me.

BODY HEALTH> By Dr. Brian M. Kean

Advanced Health and Physical Medicine

Headaches & Chiropractic If you have a headache, you’re not alone. Nine out of ten Americans suffer from headaches. Some are occasional, some frequent, some are dull and throbbing, and some cause debilitating pain and nausea. What do you do when you suffer from a pounding headache? Do you grit your teeth and carry on? Lie down? Pop a pill and hope the pain goes away? There is a better alternative. DR. BRIAN M. KEAN

originate in the neck.

Research shows that spinal manipulation – the primary form of care provided by doctors of chiropractic – may be an effective treatment option for tension headaches and headaches that

A report released in 2001 by researchers at the Duke University Evidence-Based Practice Center in Durham, NC, found that spinal manipulation resulted in almost immediate improvement for those headaches that originate in the neck, and had significantly fewer side effects and longer-lasting relief of tension-type headache than a commonly prescribed medication. Also, a 1995 study in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics found that spinal manipulative therapy is an effective treatment for tension headaches and that those who ceased chiropractic treatment after four weeks experienced a sustained therapeutic benefit in contrast with those patients who received a commonly prescribed medication.

Headache Triggers Headaches have many causes, or “triggers.” These may include foods, environmental stimuli (noises, lights, stress, etc.) and/or behaviors (insomnia, excessive exercise, blood sugar changes, etc.). About 5 percent of all headaches are warning signals caused by physical problems. Ninety-five percent of headaches are primary headaches, such as tension, migraine, or cluster headaches. These types of headaches are not caused by disease. The headache itself is the primary concern. “The greatest majority of primary headaches are associated with muscle tension in the neck,” says Dr. George B. McClelland, a doctor of chiropractic from Christiansburg, VA. “Today, Americans engage in more sedentary activities than they used to, and more hours are spent in one fixed position or posture. This can increase joint irritation and muscle tension in the neck, upper back and scalp, causing your head to ache.”

What Can You Do? The ACA suggests the following: • If you spend a large amount of time in one fixed position, such as in front of a computer, on a sewing machine, typing or reading, take a break and stretch every 30 minutes to one hour. The stretches should take your head and neck through a comfortable range of motion. • Low-impact exercise may help relieve the pain associated with primary headaches. However, if you are prone to dull, throbbing headaches, avoid heavy exercise. Engage in such activities as walking and low-impact aerobics. • Avoid teeth clenching. The upper teeth should never touch the lowers, except when swallowing. This results in stress at the temporomandibular joints (TMJ) – the two joints that connect your jaw to your skull – leading to TMJ irritation and a form of tension headaches. • Drink at least eight 8-ounce glasses of water a day to help avoid dehydration, which can lead to headaches.

What Can a Doctor of Chiropractic Do? Dr. McClelland says your doctor of chiropractic may do one or more of the following if you suffer from a primary headache: • Perform spinal manipulation or chiropractic adjustments to improve spinal function and alleviate the stress on your system. • Provide nutritional advice, recommending a change in diet and perhaps the addition of B complex vitamins. • Offer advice on posture, ergonomics (work postures), exercises and relaxation techniques. This advice should help to relieve the recurring joint irritation and tension in the muscles of the neck and upper back. “Doctors of chiropractic undergo extensive training to help their patients in many ways – not just back pain,” says Dr. McClelland. “They know how tension in the spine relates to problems in other parts of the body, and they can take steps to relieve those problems.”

GREENVILLE NATIVE COMPETES IN THE ARNOLD CLASSIC I grew up here in Greenville and graduated from D.H. Conley in 2008. I am now living in Wilmington, NC and just graduated from UNCW in May! Fitness has always been a very important and huge part of my life. I grew up living a very active lifestyle, playing sports and going to the gym at an early age. I love the way that working out makes me feel. I don’t go to the gym to socialize or anything like that. A successful workout is one where I leave sweating and knowing that I have pushed myself to the fullest extent possible. The sport of bodybuilding just recently became a huge focus in my life this past December. I began competing in a division called ‘bikini’. A lot of people don’t even realize how many other divisions there are in bodybuilding. There is physique, fitness, figure and bikini. The bikini division is supposed to be more of a natural and fit look. Extreme muscularity is not the focus, and a competitor shouldn’t be to be too lean either. The division is about being in shape, not being skinny. The judges look for proportionality, conditioning, overall muscle tone, stage presence, skin tone, and poise. One thing that I have learned more and more about is the importance of diet. Anyone can train, but in the diet is where a difference is really made and seen. I eat six meals a day, about every two to three hours. This will keep your metabolism revved up all day. I try to prepare my meals for the week on Sunday before the week begins so that I can grab the food to go when I’m busy and so it is readily available as soon as I get hungry. Each meal should contain the correct proportion of carbs, fats, and protein. When your body is getting the right nutrients and vitamins in the correct amount, cravings for sugar and junk food start to go away. I love the way that I feel when I eat clean. I have so much more energy and my mood improves. When I’m training, depending on how far I am out from a show, I’ll allow myself to have one cheat meal a week. Planning a cheat meal here and there into your diet will let you still enjoy your favorite foods once in a while. It really is all about moderation.

I love training hard. I do cardio 7 days a week, and I weight train anywhere from 5 to 6 days a week. One of the biggest misconceptions and mistakes that people make, especially females, is that they do not weight train. Many women fear getting “big” or “bulky”. I can completely understand this because I used to think the same way, but lifting heavy has greatly transformed my body. I actually got smaller, or leaner, once I began increasing the amount of weight that I was lifting. For cardio, I do a variety of activities so that I don’t get bored. Working out should be and can be something that people enjoy because there are so many different ways to be active and exercise. Living a balanced, healthy lifestyle is the ultimate goal. Sometimes, I do take a rest day if my body is telling me that I need one. If you begin trying to listen to your body, you will find that it tells you exactly what you need to do or what you are missing. I wake up every day and am excited to go to the gym and train. It is definitely a passion and something that I love more and more each day. I would encourage everyone to increase their knowledge of the importance of nutrition and to find something that they enjoy doing and make exercising a part of their life and a part of who they are. Happy training!

Massage Works Plain & Simple

Plain & Simple:

massage is good for your health. Virtually every system of the body is affected by massage, either directly or indirectly. Here is a guide to how your body can benefit.

The skeletal system: Bone is affected indirectly by massage. Improved circulation of blood brings oxygen and nutrients to the bones. Joint stiffness and pain can be reduced. As the muscles become more flexible, joint movement increases. PEGGY WHITE

The muscular system: Some massage movements relax and

stretch muscles, reducing muscular tension and cramp. Massage also makes muscles more flexible by reducing muscle tone. Muscles tired by exercise are more quickly restored by massage than by rest.

The nervous system: Soothing massage can provide relief from nervous irritability and stress-related conditions such as insomnia and tension headaches. When used energetically to stimulate, massage may relieve lethargy and fatigue.

system, which helps clear the body of a build-up of waste products. The relaxing effect of the massage can relieve stress, which in turn can boost the immune system.

Respiratory system: As you become more relaxed during a

massage, respiration may become slower and deeper as you are using your diaphragm for breathing and expending less energy. Physiotherapists use cupping movements over the base of the lungs to relieve chest congestion.

Digestive system: Massage aids relaxation and therefore can help to increase the movement of food and waste products through the digestive system. This relaxation can have a balancing effect on the digestive system.
