Not Just Selling Fitness but a Lifestyle I am proud to announce to my readers that I have just opened up my 1st gym in Greenville, NC called Pro Fitness 24. I have been waiting for this opportunity for a good while and finally got the chance to do it. My mission is to promote fitness, nutrition and health in the Eastern Carolina Region (Pitt County) the right way. My passion has always been for sports and working out. This is not a job to me but a lifestyle! I see so many people get taken advantage of by sales tactics of other gyms/trainers and it’s not right. Pro Fitness 24 will not hire just any trainer that does not pass my check list of requirements needed based on experience, certification and degrees. For instance, why would you go to a Dr. that does not have a degree? It just doesn’t make since right! I will be offering a superior fitness and athletic training experience here in Greenville which to me is lacking tremendously. Now don’t get me wrong there are a few great trainers in town but a lot more fly by night trainers ROY HOPKINS that put a bad name on the profession. Anybody can say they are a trainer and or/get a certification online in 30 minutes. It is a shame but it’s the truth! I pride my training on a collegiate baseball career, experience and B.S. degree where I earned from East Carolina in Health & Human Performance. Women and men deal with unwanted hair everyday. Excessive hair growth can be caused by a variety of things: heredity, stress, medication, and hormonal changes. Hours and money are spent on temporary fixes; shaving, plucking, tweezing and waxing. Some of these methods can cause skin irritations and even scarring. Laser hair removal provides an alternative treatment for unwanted hair without the side affects.
Different techniques and different lasers are used across the industry. Each laser and technique treats a variety of skin types. The Hair Removal and Skin Center uses a laser that treats both light and dark skin. With laser hair removal, you should expect a series of 6 treatments spaced 6 to 8 weeks apart. The reason for 6 to 8 weeks between treatments is to match the hair growth cycle, which is also 6 to 8 weeks. After your final treatment, “touch ups” may be needed to address new growth. Individuals in treatment need to stay on track with their treatment for the best results.

Individuals considering treatment don’t have to let the hair grow out for treatment; the hair can be trimmed or shaved. However, tanning should be avoided prior to treatment. The laser is attracted to dark pigmentation; so the lighter the skin the darker the hair tends to have easier treatments. Unfortunately, fine blond or gray hair would not be treatable with acceptable results.

Say NO to DIETING! Food is fuel for your body and mind Atkins. The Mediterranean Diet. The South Beach Diet. The Model Diet. The Acai Berry Diet. SENSA. Nutrisystem. The HCG Diet. Google “diet plans”, and you will get 22,500,000 results. That’s scary. Our culture is obsessed with dieting, and it makes me mad. Being “on a diet” generally means that you restrict certain foods or limit yourself to some sort of controlled regimen of food or drink. Diets take a lot of willpower. It’s also implied that “being on a diet” means that once your reach your “goal,” PEGGY WHITE you will stop “dieting”, lose control and go back to your previous bad eating habits. My issue with “dieting” is, first, it can lead to seriously warped behaviors when it comes to food. Too many diets have turned into eating disorders. Restricting foods is a bad idea. Period. Second, dieting put your health on the backburner. The focus of 99% of dieting advertisements tells us that we need to lose weight in order to be beautiful and desirable. Now, I have nothing against losing weight. But what I do have issue with are diets whose primary goal is weight loss instead of focusing on make healthy choices and living a healthier life. A “diet” is difficult to maintain; you crave your “restricted” foods all the time. You tell yourself you aren’t going to eat them because you want to be skinny and beautiful and then you feel crappy, get cranky and finally, you cheat, overindulge and then feel like crap about yourself. Maybe you go back on the diet and the cycle continues, or maybe you give up and try a different diet with similar results. Unless you are making permanent lifestyle changes dieting can make you feel horrible about yourself. You can feel great about yourself and changing your life by making changes that you can stick to and not beat yourself up about if you slip up, making deliberately healthy choices not because you want to lose 5 pounds, but because you want to be stronger, run farther, lift more weight, or live longer. Your “diet” should not be a fad. It should be a way of life. I am not angry if you are on diet. I am angry with the fact that dieting has become a billion dollar industry that does not seem to care that it is ruining our self-esteem and our health. When I talk about my “diet,” I am just talking about the foods I eat. No restricting, no counting. A “diet” is a lifestyle that doesn’t change depending on whether I am trying to fit into a bathing suit or not. It is about knowing what your body needs in order to be healthy and happy. Sure, there may be some days ( or weeks…) when I indulge a little too often and then have to be more thoughtful about what we eat, but I will never hear me say “I’m going on a diet.” Eat Healthy, Live Happy!

BACK PAIN>
By Dr. Brian M. Kean
Advanced Health and Physical Medicine
Lower Back Pain Eighty percent of people suffer from back pain at some point in their lives. Back pain is the second most common reason for visits to the doctor’s office, outnumbered only by upper-respiratory infections. In fact, it is estimated that low back pain affects more than half of the adult population each year and more than 10% of all people experience frequent bouts of low back pain. The susceptibility of the low back to injury and pain DR. BRIAN M. KEAN is due to the fact that the low back, like the neck, is a very unstable part of the spine. Unlike the thoracic spine, which is supported and stabilized by the rib cage. This instability allows us to have a great deal of mobility to touch our toes, tie our shoes or pick something up from the ground, but at the cost of increased risk of injury. As long as it is healthy and functioning correctly, the low back can withstand tremendous forces without injury. Professional powerlifters can pick up several hundred pounds off the floor without injuring their low back. However, if the low back is out of adjustment or has weakened supporting muscles, something as simple as taking a bag of groceries out of the trunk of their car, picking something up off the floor, or even simply bending down to pet the cat can cause a low back injury. Until recently, researchers believed that back pain would heal on its own. We have learned, however, that this is not true. Recent studies showed that when back pain is not treated, it may go away temporarily, but will most likely return. It is important to take low back pain seriously and seek professional chiropractic care. This is especially true with pain that recurs over and over again. Contact our chiropractor . . . we can help!
THE CAUSES OF LOW BACK PAIN
There are many different conditions that can result in low back pain, including: sprained ligaments, strained muscles, ruptured disks, trigger points and inflamed joints. While sports injuries or accidents can lead to injury and pain, sometimes even the simplest movements, like picking up a pencil from the floor, can have painful results. In addition, conditions such as arthritis, poor posture, obesity, psychological stress and even kidney stones, kidney infections, blood clots, or bone loss can lead to pain. Due to the fact that there are a whole lot of things that can cause low back pain, and some of those things can be quite serious if left untreated, it is important to seek professional help. Chiropractors are the experts at diagnosing the cause and determining the proper treatment for low back pain. Here are some of the most common causes I see:
Subluxations
Whenever there is a disruption in the normal movement or position of the vertebrae, the result is pain and inflammation. In the lumbar spine, these usually occur at the transition between the lower spine and the sacrum. Subluxations can lead to debilitating low back pain. Fortunately, subluxations are easily treatable and often times a significant reduction in pain is experienced almost immediately after treatment.
Disc Herniations
Contrary to popular belief, a herniated disc does not automatically mean that you are going to suffer from low back pain. In fact, one study found that almost half of all adults had at least one bulging or herniated disc, even though they did not suffer any back pain from it. On the other hand, herniated discs can be a source of intense and debilitating pain that frequently radiates to other areas of the body. Unfortunately, once a disc herniates, they rarely, if ever,
completely heal. Further deterioration can often be avoided through regular chiropractic care, but a complete recovery is much less common. Sprains, Strains and Spasms This is commonly the source of low back pain among the weekend warriors. You know, the type who have very little physical activity during the week, but once the weekend arrives, they push themselves way too much. By the end of the weekend, they are lying flat on their back counting down the hours before they can get in to see their chiropractor. Overworking the muscles or ligaments of the low back can lead to small tears in the tissues, which then become painful, swollen and tight.
Stress
Whenever you become stressed, your body responds by increasing your blood pressure and heart rate, flooding your body with stress hormones and tightening up your muscles. When you are stressed all the time, the chronic tension causes your muscles to become sore, weak and loaded with trigger points. If you are stressed out all of the time and you have low back pain, it is important to do some relaxation exercises, such as deep breathing, as well as to get regular exercise.
TREATING LOW BACK PAIN WITH CHIROPRACTIC
Chiropractic treatment for low back pain is usually pretty straightforward. Most commonly, it’s simply a matter of adjusting the lower lumbar vertebrae and pelvis to re-establish normal motion and position of your bones and joints. Chiropractic for the low back has been repeatedly shown to be the most effective treatment for low back pain. In fact, major studies have shown that chiropractic care is more effective, cheaper and has better long-term outcomes than any other treatment. This makes sense because chiropractic care is the only method of treatment that serves to re-establish normal vertebral motion and position in the spine. All other treatments, such as muscle relaxants, pain killers and bed rest, only serve to decrease the symptoms of the problem and do not correct the problem itself.

Hi! I’m Carrie Ann Davis; Zumba fanatic and instructor! My small family and I have recently moved here from “little” Washington, the beautiful town in which Zumba found me. My small family consists of my hard working husband and adorable three year old son (who also love’s Zumba). I taught at a couple of gyms for about a year and a half in Washington and Williamston. I’ve always been ‘into’ fitness and always loved the way I felt after a great workout. Once I discovered that I could party for an hour a day and feel the same exhilaration that a good workout gives; I was sold! Zumba has changed my life and my figure (hubby likes) and I know it will change yours too! Come party with me at Pro Fitness 24 and your body will thank you! carrie.profitness24@gmail.com

By Bart Brown, Local Attorney Roberts & Brown, PA
Your Health and The Law Seems like we have been dealing with natural disasters for months now. Tornadoes ripping through the area in the spring. Irene giving us the “what for”, preceded by yes, you got it, an earthquake. I would ask where is the moon turning to blood and brimstone, but I dare not. Lost among all of this is approximately 6 months of smoke. Yes, smoke. To some degree or another, we have been dealing with forest fire smoke BART BROWN courtesy of some sort of kindling down near the outer banks. The smoke combined with the heat was borderline brutal on occasions. A simple jog around the neighborhood gave you a 50/50 chance of coming down with brown lung or the dreaded chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. So I hereby wave the white (or should it be green) flag. Yes, the green flag, as in, its time to “Go Green”. Let us start by purchasing a Volt electric car. The Volt of course is an engineering marvel created by our government in conjunction Government ...excuse me..General Motors. With $700 million in taxpayer dollars dedicated to this savior of a vehicle, 2,745 have been sold to date with many unsold units languishing in dealer inventories. Simple math tells me that $255,009 has been spent per unit sold. The average price of the Volt is in the neighborhood of $40,000. I did not major in economics at App State, but my bet is with ideas like this, Obama likewise did not major in economics at Columbia. But hey what’s money? Let’s get to a nice review of the Obamamobile such as the one that follows: “I live in New York City and find the electric range of this car was nothing but a scam. 25 miles has been the best I can manage on a charge and that is without headlights, heat or radio. Once the engine kicks in I get about 28 mpg and after the tax credit this car costs me 33k which is ridiculous. A Prius costs 24k and gets 45 mpg.” Uh-oh...Maybe lets skip on the electric car for now and give them 20 years to get the science right. One thing I can definitely do is install solar panels everywhere and cut down on the ole carbon footprint. Clearly the place to start would be with a company by the name of Solyndra. They have a beautiful website touting how they provide clean and economic solar power for your large rooftop and their cylindrical technology. They have received $528,000,000 in stimulus money from the government for the growing of their technology. Yes, this company is green alright, but the problem is that it is also red. Solyndra is so
much in the red that the company has filed bankruptcy and left the taxpayers on the hook for the $528 mill. Ouch!!! So, in the government’s attempt at greenery with just two projects, we have doled out close to 1.3 billion dollars and we have a clown car which nobody is buying and a defunct company to show for it. For my money, of which a goodly amount goes to Uncle Sam, we should tap what energy resources the good Lord has seen fit to give this bountiful land and do it in a responsible manner, and the endangered tree frog in Oregon be damned (wink, wink). Hey, how about some oil refineries. The last refinery built in the U.S. was in Garyville, La in 1976, so even if we had all the crude oil we could ever need....which we pretty much do, we would still have to import gasoline because of our lack of refineries. Meanwhile, 20% of America is at the poverty level while gas hovers needlessly near $4 per gallon. Drill and refine responsibly, continue to mine coal and to work to make it “cleaner” while doing research into solar and electric and other potential sources for clean energy. Meanwhile, with the approximately 29 Volts that reside in North Carolina warm weather continues to reign on...though its supposed to be unseasonably cool this weekend...did someone just purchase the 30th Volt???

Take The Challenge “Physical training is good, but training for godliness is much better, promising benefits in this life and in the life to come.” 1 Timothy 4:8 (NLT) Recently my wife and I were introduced to a new system to help us lose weight and get in better physical condition. We had been looking for something for quite some time that would work for us and help us JOHNNY JONES get the results we were both looking for. So, after some due diligence and research we embarked on a “90 Day Challenge” using a meal replacement system that promised to deliver, and so far it really has. There’s nothing more satisfying when you have a fitness goal to see the scales and inches go down. This whole challenge concept got me thinking. What if at the same time I was challenging myself physically, I also challenged myself in some other areas of life? This inspired me to launch what we call a “90 Day Sozo Challenge” at the church that I’m so privileged to Pastor.

You see, we all have some area or areas in our lives that we would like to see get better. But sadly, we often times get discouraged simply because where we currently are seems so far from where we want to be. It’s easy to get discouraged and quit along the way never fulfilling your goals simply because the task seems so big. But, what if, instead of looking at the big picture you broke it down in smaller increments that can be managed more effectively. You certainly wouldn’t go to the gym for an exercise session and expect to be a body builder over night. In the same way we should set small attainable goals for ourselves spiritually, as well. What I’ve come to learn about the Gospel or “Good News” of Jesus Christ, is that it’s meant to effect every area of my life. In fact, the word “Saved” has seven distinct meanings that come together under this one word. The word “Saved” in the original Greek language is the word “Sozo” and it literally means to be saved, healed, delivered, preserved, protected, to prosper and to be made whole. In fact, Jesus himself used this word “Sozo” interchangeably throughout the New Testament when healing someone or meeting a need. The Apostle Paul is not suggesting in the above verse that physical training is not good, but it should not be the only thing we focus on. He suggests that training for “godliness” is even better. One of the meanings for “godliness” is to be God like or to be like God and one way we can be like Him, is to have His mind. In 1 Corinthians chapter two, Paul teaches us that as believers in Jesus, we can also have the mind of Christ and as our minds become more like Him, we become more like Him. Just as it would be foolish for someone to only work out one area of their body and ignore the rest, so Paul also tells us in Romans 12:2 to renew our “entire mind.” Our soul is our mind, our will, and our emotions and it’s in renewing our minds to what God says about us, and who He we are in Him that we can fulfill our destiny and purpose. So today, as you hit the gym, go for that walk and watch that caloric intake, also challenge yourself spiritually by allowing God’s Spirit and His Word to show you who you are in Him.

TRAVEL
Rum Runner Dive Shop> Peter B. Wagner DO. Owner
Age, Fitness, and Diving After about 30 years of age, life gives each of us an important choice: use it or lose it. Those of us who choose to “use it” can maintain or even increase our fitness levels PETER B. WAGNER DO for decades. The rest of us fail to provide our bodies with enough activity to stave off the debilitating influence of Father Time. For example: ● Our fitness potential peaks in our mid-30s, then gradually declines until death. ●The average person gains about 3 pounds per decade starting at age 20. ●The average 60 year-old American male has a blood pressure of 140/90, where 120/70 is considered normal. Does this mean that diving becomes automatically riskier as we age? Hardly. However, while there are no upper age limits on diving, it remains prudent to consider the effects of aging on our dive safety and counter them with the appropriate amount of activity. The incidence of death in divers 50 to 70 years old is higher than average, though the primary cause is heart failure, a largely preventable disease. Cardiovascular and strength training thus serve double duty in improving the quality and extent of our lives while preparing us for the diving we enjoy.
SLOWING DOWN
When it comes to our fitness, we really live three “ages” simultaneously. Our chronological age is an indication of how long we’ve been
alive. Our biological age is an indication of how our fitness and health compares to others of different chronological ages. Our training age is the length of time spent on a regular exercise program and has the greatest influence on our ability to achieve results for our efforts. We commonly assume that the older we get chronologically, the less we will benefit from exercise. Contrarily, researchers are finding that age is no barrier to muscle adaptation, whether it be strength or endurance. Thus, the cause of age-related differences in fitness appears to be the cumulative effects of lifestyle choices. We choose to do less, and our bodies adapt. Reverse the downward trend at any age, and we will see our biological ages decrease. Maintain your activity level, and fitness becomes easier to keep over time.
PHYSIOLOGICAL FUNCTION
For most of us, the importance of fitness is not really about how fast we can run or how much we can bench press. Most immediately apparent is how our fitness levels affect our abilities to perform the basic functions of life- climbing hills or stairs, carrying the groceries, mowing the lawn, or walking the dog. The more strenuous our lifestyles, the more important our fitness becomes.
