New Years Resolutions?

GVM GVM

LIFE

Start Early BY RANDY MOORE

Human beings are lazy creatures who love to procrastinate. Procrastination is our favorite form of self-indulgence. We postpone important tasks until a later time because we feel that we should allow ourselves to remain comfortable in the present. These tasks tend to be tasks that, although they cannot be avoided, can be left to a later date. The problem with procrastinating is that just as the due date doesn’t change, neither does our eagerness to complete the task. Thankfully, we aren’t complete idiots and understand that when something does need to get done, it actually needs to get done. So, we buckle down and force ourselves to cram in all necessary action right before meeting the finish line. The issue of procrastination makes itself evident when we postpone tasks that don’t have set-in-stone due dates, such as our New Year’s resolutions.

Without A Need, There Is Rarely A Will

New Year’s resolutions are the worst for

a couple of reasons. The first reason being that we never resolve to do the things that need to be done, but rather, those that we believe should be done. When it comes to resolutions, there are no deadlines. We are attempting to create a change for the sake of the change itself. Because we do not feel that we must stick to our resolutions, we tend to fall back on our old ways whenever we feel overcome by discomfort.

Our Resolutions Come With A Ridiculous Start Date

If there were ever a worse time to take on a new habit requiring productivity or focus, it’s on New Year’s Day — the morning after New Year’s Eve. Unless you’re in your 60s or older, you’re going to be partying it up on NYE. You’re going to be drinking, possibly doing drugs, dancing, yelling, meeting random people and maybe even taking home

one of those people, only to regret it the next morning. Regardless, whatever it is that you are doing on New Year’s Eve, even if it’s only staying up late and not getting enough sleep, the following morning is not a good time to initiate a change in your life. You will be, at the very least, sleep deprived. And you’re likely to also be hungover or still feeling the effects of whatever it was you took the night before. If you think you can wake up feeling like Satan just ravaged your body and stick to your resolution, you’re delusional.

If You Want To Change Any Aspect Of Your Life, Start When You’re Sober

The trick to keeping your New Year’s resolu-

LIFE

tion is to start several weeks early: at least two weeks prior to the festivities. Any sort of change you are trying to incite is going to be difficult because the change is going argue against the habits you have already grown accustomed to. We are creatures of habit; if you want to break old habits, you’re going to have to substitute them with new ones. Forcing newer, healthier habits into your life isn’t impossible, but it is difficult. Don’t wait until you have a splitting headache to try and focus on your new life; start focusing on your resolution right now. Get a head start on your new year by creating a new you now. Focusing on your New Year’s resolutions and putting them into effect preemptively will allow for a much smoother transition. Give yourself time to adjust to the changes you wish to create when you aren’t caught up in the moment — when you have the concentration to muffle all the extra noise surrounding you. Start your New Year’s resolution during the old year and you won’t have as much difficulty sticking to it once the clock hits midnight. Set yourself up with an early start date and an end date. The point of your resolution isn’t to spend the entirety of the next year putting in the effort to keep your resolution. The New Year isn’t the year to change — it’s the year to be changed. Don’t wait to begin changing and then spend the remainder of the New Year “trying” to change. Adopt your resolution now and set a date for the completion of your transition — no more than six months.

The Airing of Grievances: Pop Music BY NATHAN BLACK

Chris Rock once commented on the state of rap music as being undefendable, which was in reaction to the shift of it going from the late seventies/early eighties era of rap when the art form was little more than a bastardized combination of rock and disco, flared with the hard edge of the inner cities that birthed it, to a simple formula of finding a hook and verse and then driving it into the clubs until it loses all relevance (example: Teach Me How to Dougie). Even in its early days there was something that had definite size and intention to it, a clamorous revolution formed from its ability to not only catch ears but hearts, as a marginalized group finally had a new music genre to be heard above the crowds through. The same could be said about pop music although what makes pop music pop (popular) might be the fact that is--like modern rap--devoid of substance. No one could really say this about The Beatles, The Rolling Stone, Stevie Wonder, or The Beach Boys, and yet they had all the packaging of a easily hot one-minute band and then dismissed group of yesteryear’s memory, that in truth, only went missing a season ago. With the age of the internet in full swing and attention spans at an all time low, I find myself both perturbed by the lack of artistic intentions and the trends that are championed over time. Remember when there was too much autotune in everything? It was unbelievable! T-Pain, one of the main culprit in this trend, had to go on NPR just to show that he could make music without autotune and over production. This stripped down approach recalls the heyday of the grunge era and the resignaGVM | 11

tion of eighties hair metal. In a similar way, a general return to pragmatic sensibility with the magnetism of extraordinary voices came into fashion in recent years. This trend tends to be one I can get behind if it weren’t for the feeling that these singers weren’t all weighed and measure through shows like The Voice or American Idol. It used to be that pop music would elevate a few honest voices that would play ball long enough to bring their own art and opinions that would better the world. This used to be the feeling; hence, why classic rock anthems still live on. But in our most recent trend of the “honest voice”, with artists like Adele, Hoizer, Eric Hutchinson, Sam Smith, and Frank Ocean, it is more the studio production and style exuded that dulls their honesty. It is as though artists have become too polish and lack the “pop” and hiss of old vinyl records that still play on today. There is no real way to connect with such godlike feats. Put all of this aside, what really perturbs me above all else isn’t pop music per se, or people liking pop music--like what you want--what is actually distressing is people’s inability to expand outside of pop music, toward music of more humble or unfamiliar groundings. I would ask, or implore, that people reach out to different styles and even try to discover music in their own area, locally. Don’t give up

on your favorites, no need for that, but instead, allow new music to seep into your daily walk. This is a luxury for some but when we consider the accessibility of the internet then we can see this not so impossible. But where to start? Pandora, Limewire, Spotify, etc. On top of this, discover who your favorite bands were influenced by and find out who else those influential groups or artists also influenced. Look for comparisons between artists. Look for how music that has changed over time. Look for timeless messages and people who were ahead of the game. Consider flaws in songs, notice how they become unimportant after you’ve listened to a song over and over. Now, before you say, I don’t have time for that, well, that’s understandable, but like gardening, anything worth building takes time. I believe when you search for honesty in art this will be an open door for expanding thought and making connections between all people, and that’s not something you normally find in a Nicki Minaj song, sorry. Fill your head with genius and you’ll see a difference. Like the anti-drug campaigns say, “live above the influence.”

LIFE

Story By the time you read this, the holidays will have passed and we will be on our way to 2015. But I’ve got one last Christmas story for you.

It was 3 days before Christmas and I had the bulk of my shopping completed. Since it was a cold and rainy day, I decided to get out of town and spend the night in Myrtle Beach. Of course I was barefoot as usual as I was packing my van, which was parked on the street. A car pulled up, rolled down the window and the guy driving (who was a Marine) said “Do you have any shoes?”. Though I initially thought it was a bit strange, I nicely said “Well I don’t really wear shoes.” He then tells me that he had went to church the night before and

GVM | 13

BY BAREFOOT WADE

had heard a moving sermon about practicing random acts of kindness. His preacher had apparently said “Find the person who needs food and feed them, Find the person who needs new clothes and give them new clothes....FIND THE MAN WHO IS WEARING NO SHOES AND GET HIM SHOES!”. So the Marine tells me that he turned the corner, saw a guy with no shoes (on a cold and rainy day) and thought perhaps Jesus was speaking to him. He then tells me that he had went out and bought a bunch of gift cards to give out if he ran into someone who needed some help. I chuckled a bit, smiled and told him that I do have a pair of moccasins but that I prefer to go barefoot so I don’t need anything.

I also expressed to him how we need more people like him in this world who understands the importance of looking out for other people. He asked me once again if I needed anything and I told him once again that I was fine. We shook hands and he drove off. Everytime we turn on the news we are constantly being informed of how terrible everything is, so it’s nice to know that there are still some good people out there who are doing good things. If every body looks out for each other, it makes the world go round a little smoother for everyone.

Winter Cocktail RECIPES BOOZY PUMPKIN WHITE HOT CHOCOLATE INGREDIENTS 1/2 cup white chocolate chips (or chopped) 2.5 cups milk (I used 2%) 1/4 cup pumpkin puree 1/4 tsp pumpkin pie spice 1 ounce Kahlua or 1/2 ounce Bourbon whipped cream and caramel for topping (optional) INSTRUCTIONS In a saucepan over low-medium heat, melt the chocolate chips and 1/2 cup of the milk, whisking often (about 3 minutes). Once melted, add the rest of the milk, the pumpkin and the pumpkin pie spice and stir vigorously to incorporate. Pour a small amount of the hot chocolate into two serving glasses, add one ounce of Kahlua OR one-half ounce of bourbon (bourbon is much stronger in taste). Top off with hot chocolate, stir and then top with whipped cream, caramel sauce and more pumpkin pie spice (optional). Blank Space // Style (Taylor Swift Mash-Up) - Louisa Wendorff

What could be better than a Taylor Swift song from 1989? Obviously, two Taylor Swift songs from 1989. Nashville-based singer Louisa Wendorff enlisted her friend Devin Dawson to help sing an acoustic mashup of Swift’s 1989 hits “Style” and “Blank Space.” The clip was uploaded on Dec. 23 but didn’t get that much traction until Swift herself Tweeted out a link to it four days later, saying she was “obsessed.” Wendorff, understandably, was a little overwhelmed by the feedback – and Tweeted out her own response. On Facebook, Wendorff added that “I’ve been happy dancing all day and FREAKING OUT!!” Swift’s music – especially when it comes in pairs – often has that effect on people. - We asked our staf to watch the video and reply their thoughjts on it.

“Beautiful voice. She sounds like an angle. I don’t care too much for the guy though. Lol” - Christian L.

This is beautiful! It’s hard to cover a piece and make it better than the original. These two songs make for an awesome mash up. Their voices are lovely together. Let’s hope they continue to surprise us. - Chelsea B.

“I kept waiting for the drop, it never came. Its very sweet music though.” - Eduardo V.

“The only thing more pathetic then covering a Taylor Swift song is making a video of covering a Taylor Swift song. I’ve seen finger paintings from my nieces and nephews that have more creativity then this cookie cutter pop crap remix.”....Seriously dog...you’re better than this. - Barefoot Wade

“I don’t know either of the songs. But the harmonies are on point. The ebb and flow, back and forth, between verses from each song help carry the emotion throughout. A great tonal balance makes this a great mashup.”

“I loved it! I thought their voices complemented each other and it was nice to hear a pop song transform into something more angelic and relatable.” - Ashley R.

- Antonio J.

“Puts a great spin on Taylor Swifts new songs. I love how light the song sounds, they took two pop songs and made a unique acoustic piece that I will be singing in the shower for weeks!” - Caitlin G. GVM | 19

“I thought it was a very creative take at both tracks and after watching I went through and watched Louisa’s videos and checked out her Arrow EP and the quality of her vocals is tremendous.” - Travis J.

“The Interview”

a game changer for the movie industry?

BY CRISTINA BOGART

“The Interview” was never supposed to be anything more than a Korean spoof making fun of their “supreme leader”. However, with the unusual series of events that transpired over the past few weeks…. Game changer doesn’t even begin to describe the unprecedented move that Sony did to release a film in theaters and on digital platforms simultaneously. Sony is the first film studio to ever attempt a release such as this….which earned them $1.04 million from 331 locations on opening night, according to studio estimates, and 15 million in digital purchases. As of December 30th, a three-star general has set up a task force to keep the movie from crossing North Korea’s borders. This past summer Kim declared the movie an “Act of war”. Around the beginning of December it became aware to the public that Sony had been hacked releasing multiple movies that were not yet released to the public as well as millions of emails regarding Sony salaries, private conversations about the president (of the united states) as well as Hollywood gossip. But the most damaging was the personal information and social security numbers of former employees of the company. U.S. investiga-

tors made an announcement pinning the blame on hackers working for the Pyongyang regime. Because of the North Korean regime’s tight control of the Internet in the reclusive country, U.S. officials believe the hack was ordered directly by the country’s leadership. Before the Sony hack, terror threats and screening cancellations, “The Interview” co-directors and co-writers Evan Goldberg and Seth Rogen were reassured its plot of an assassination attempt against North Korea’s leader wouldn’t incite much of an uproar. Boy were they wrong. After the hackers issued terror threats against movie theatres planning to screen the film, Sony cancelled its scheduled Dec. 25 cinematic release in the U.S. and Canada but eventually decided on a limited theatrical release south of the border. Sony also released the film on several digital platforms and this week announced it will screen it in some Canadian theatres after Christmas. Ultimately Sony ended up releasing the interview on Christmas Day as planned,

OFFER ENDS JANUARY 31, 2015

through online formats such as YouTube and independent cinemas, according to CNN. A few hundred movie theaters decided to go ahead and show the film on Christmas. Sony had originally planned to release the movie in 2,000 to 3,000 theaters, but only about 300 played it. Nonetheless, the film raked in $1 million on its first day. While there were threats of attacks on theaters that showed the film, no major incidents were reported. While some think it was planned and credit as a brilliant publicity stunt, I think that is giving Sony too much credit. However this entire story has basically made a Seth Rogen and James Franco movie sound like a plot for a Seth Rogen and James Franco movie if you ask me. I did see the movie myself on Christmas Eve and it was actually very funny but no cause for a terrorist attack by far. If you get the chance to watch it you should it is worth the time for sure.
