2015 Down East Walk to Defeat ALS Many of us are familiar with last summer’s Ice Bucket Challenge, which raised not only an amazing amount of funds but also an amazing amount of awareness concerning amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), more commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease. The Ice Bucket craze resulted in over $100 million in donations nationwide that will go toward expediting research to identify the cause of ALS and a cure, providing care and technologies for patients currently living with ALS, and enhancing public and professional education that will generate more attention and advocacy toward fighting this fatal disease. Our local North Carolina chapter, The Jim Catfish Hunter Chapter, based in Raleigh, NC, has definitely felt the positive effects of last summer’s numerous videos of and donations from the Ice Bucket Challenge, but it doesn’t have to stop there. Every spring, North Carolina hosts seven Walks to Defeat ALS, statewide, which serve as the Jim Catfish Hunter Chapter’s number one source of funding.
GVM | 5
Each year, Greenville, NC, hosts its own event that raises awareness and funding for ALS: The Down East Walk to Defeat ALS, serving Pitt and its surrounding counties. The event offers those living with ALS, their friends, and their families an opportunity to come together to serve their common cause. It is a day to honor those currently fighting this disease and to remember those we have lost. It often proves to be an emotional day, but it is also a celebration of our progress, our accomplishments, and our continuing work toward finding a cause and a cure for ALS. The 2015 Down East Walk to Defeat ALS is only weeks away. This year’s event is scheduled for Saturday, April 18 at its new location, Boyd Lee Park. Registration and Walk Day events begin at 9am, and the walk begins at 10. Over forty walk teams are already signed up and raising donations for this year’s walk, but it is not too late to join! It’s easy to do so; simply contact the Jim Catfish Hunter Chapter at 877-568-4347 and ask to speak with someone about

There is no known cause or cure for ALS, and it occurs all over the world, affecting anyone. According to ALSA.org, “Approximately 5,600 people in the U.S. are diagnosed with ALS each year. The incidence of ALS is two per 100,000 people, and it is estimated that as many as 30,000 Americans may have the disease at any given time.” The ALS Association explains that “Although the life expectancy of an ALS patient averages about two to five years from the time of diagnosis, this disease is variable and many people live with quality for five years and more. More than half of all patients live more than three years after diagnosis.” One of the main goals of the Jim Catfish Hunter Chapter is to provide care and technologies to enhance the quality of life for those living with ALS. This includes funding three ALS clinics in our state, one of which is proudly located right here in Greenville, NC!

My Insanely Awesome Spring Break Adventure BY BAREFOOT WADE
Like many of you, I was needing a spring adventure. There is something about the rebirth of the sun after a gloomy winter that makes us all a little crazy, but in a good way. I’m no slouch when it comes to traveling and having a good time. But this year I went the extra mile....literally! My winter tour ended in Augusta, Georgia on March 7. After traveling around and performing all winter, most people would of seeked a couch and netflix for the following week. Tempting as that was, I had a different plan in mind. I drove down to Orlando, Florida where my oldest friend Bob just relocated to. It turns out that there is a state park near by so we went and rented canoes and spent two days canoeing around the rivers and swamps. We saw tons of alligators and we managed to get quite close to them and got several good pictures. The second day on the water, an extremely cute girl showed up out of nowhere, pulled up next to us, and offered us both a red bull. Simple as that was, there was just something magical about it. We chatted for a minute, drank our redbull and continued on to our alligator river/swamp adventure. We have since refered to her as “The Swamp Angel”. After two days on the water I hopped in my van and headed to North Carolina, but my adventure was far from over I arrived back in our state around midnight. I chilled out for about 3 hours on the couch and then hopped in the passenger seat of my buddy Kevins car and started driving north at 3am. We arrive in New Jersey that afternoon. We were crashing at his cousins house so no hotel room needed. The following day we woke up early, hopped on the train and went to New York City for the first time ever....on Friday the 13th none the less! Though I am a hard core barefooter, I did put on a pair of moccasins for the big city. Afterall, there is no telling what has been on those streets! We wandered all day around the big city and saw most all the landmarks including the Empire State Building, Madison Square Gardens, Central Park, the new Freedom Tower, and even the firestation used in the old Ghostbusters movie! We of course also got authentic New York pizza in a great shop located in the Village. Once we were done, we had realized that we had walked over 10 miles! So we limped back on the train and went back to New Jersey. As I had mentioned, I took this trip with my friend Kevin who I’ve been hanging out with for most of my life. His family is originally from New Jersey and his dad had played in a band there during the 70’s. The band had all gotten back in touch with each other and they had decided to do a reunion show. Even though this band hadn’t played together in over 30 years. They still sold out 500 tickets to the show! Apparently they were pretty big back in the day... We had a blast watching the band relive there glory days and judging by the sound and the audience, you really couldnt tell that they hadnt played together in 30 years. Since Kevin’s family is basically GVM | 7
my adoptive family, it was so cool to see everyone together and be a part of this momentous event. The next day we said our good-byes and headed back down to the good ole south. We arrrived home at about 1 am. I slept on the futon for a few hours and then went to Ocracoke island to play a St. Patricks day show. It was a hell of a week, a great adventure and a road trip I’ll never forget!

Dubtown Cosmonauts:
Ready for Blastoff BY CAMERON MAXWELL
After a recent visit to Crossbones Tavern, we caught up with a local favorite the Dubtown Cosmonauts. Crossbones Tavern was packed to capacity, and a line down the block. Inside we found the Cosmonauts dishing out some tasty Funk that had the place radiating a vibe that didn’t leave a soul standing still. Soulful and authentic their music tears down the genre barrier, exposing the common thread connecting us all. The crowd and the band were intertwined so intimately you couldn’t tell where one ended and the other began. This is their 5th year together, and they were simply killing it. Justin Heter’s Drums, and Alex Voustinas’ Bass created a rhythm section that got everyone instantly pumped, and with Nick Gilarmis’s, and Joe Starr’s Guitars, and Will Ammons Keys fired up, Crossbones was launched into orbit with the Cosmonauts. The Music can be described as a blend of High Energy Funk, Jazz, Blues, Reggae, with a dash of Phish, and Grateful Dead thrown in for good measure. The result is a completely original sound that appeals to anyone, and everyone. The Band is constantly evolving, and adding new material, so every show is different, and unique. Occasionally they have former members, and special guests such as Tyler Simmons on keys, Tom Shaw on Guitars, and Todd Wade

on Sax, to join in for a full blown Cosmonaut experience unlike anything you’ve heard before. The Band came together in 2010 almost by accident. A local hot spot in Wilmington was looking to fill a vacant spot in the weekend lineup, and after a few last minute calls to local pro’s in different Bands, the Cosmonauts were on their way. They shared a singular vision, and the goal was to play music they loved, and wanted to play, not what would necessarily fill a venue, or club. The appeal was instantaneous, and they have consistently packed clubs since then. The Cosmonauts are gaining traction every time they play, and with new material, and recording sessions in the works, we can look forward to hearing more from them in the very near future. You can also find upcoming dates, and archival footage for Dubtown Cosmonauts on Facebook, and YouTube

THE LUCK OF THE IRISH
GVM
LIFE
BY JUNIOUS SMITH
I guess I had the Luck of the Irish this St. Patrick’s Day.
Greenville showcased a plethora of — well — green on March 17, with thousands of residents out at bars and clubs around the 5th Street area. Meanwhile, I was doing a trio of firsts: my first time celebrating St. Patrick’s Day in Greenville, the initial interaction with the members of G-Vegas Magazine and up until then, I had never done a bar crawl. Honestly, I had no idea what I was going to be doing that day. I figured I’d just talk to people about how many Irish car bombs and green beers they’d consume, along with the nationally-acclaimed party scene here in the city. What I didn’t expect was actually being a part of it and subsequently hitting five locations: Fitzgerald’s, Crossbones Tavern, Halfway House, 5th Street Distillery and Annex and Uptown. I felt like I was randomly being inserted into a Bud Light commercial and someone asked “are you up for whatever?” While I had expectations about the experience, I was still oblivious to what was about to transpire… And I loved every second of it! I mean, as soon as I took that Irish Car Bomb, I knew the night was going to be something special. I felt like a rock star wearing the G-Vegas Magazine shirt: so many pictures were taken, plenty of
GVM | 13
conversation being doled out and overall great times. With this being my first time with the squad, I had no idea how appreciative the city has been of the publication. As someone who has been writing professionally since 2008, it means the world to me when a person delivers positive words about a story or the publication in general. It’s a morale boost and it makes the staff want to go even harder for those who take the time to check us out. Salute to all of the supporters. As far as my time out there? I did a little bit of everything (except drinking, which I did a lot of.) You might’ve seen me hit the Shmoney dance at Halfway House. Of course, I was at 5th Street chatting up some lovely ladies who were taking a break from the long, arduous school grind at ECU to enjoy the holiday. Yes, that was me having a conversation about socioeconomic and race relations at Crossbones Tavern over a couple beers. I’m weird and sporadic, but also versatile when it comes to ensuring everyone has a good time. Unfortunately, this may be the last time I’ll put together a story about my exciting times in G-Vegas, as I’ll be moving to Atlanta on April 1. If I do have the opportunity to come back, best believe I will have a running diary about the events that transpired. For now, I have to say as a man who has travelled all across the great state of North Carolina and enjoyed himself in numerous social settings, Greenville is definitely at the top of my list.
MONEY ISN’T EVERYTHING GVM GVM
LIFE
I love money – as we all do. Yet, money isn’t everything. There are things in life that are much more important than money itself, or anything that money is capable of buying. The reality is that even though we live in a capitalist world, the most valuable things in life come without a price tag. This is important to keep in mind as more and more people every year seem to be losing sight of this fact. Money cannot buy you everything. Here are some of the important things that the richest person in the world can still very well be lacking:
TIME
In reality, time is the only valuable currency on the planet – it is the only currency with intrinsic value. Likewise, it’s the only currency that you can spend, but never make. Time cannot be forged, stolen or borrowed. No matter how much money you have, the time that you have already spent is time that you will never again have. This is something that you should keep in mind the next time you decide to waste your time. You have one life, one chance to make it all count – make it all mean something. You can be the richest person in the world, but if you run out of time, every dollar means nothing.
BY RANDY MOORE
LOVE
You can buy sex. You can buy intimacy. You can buy the boyfriend/girlfriend experience. But you will never be able to buy true love because true love is never for sale. If anything, money makes finding love more difficult – it brings suitors your way, which, in reality, have no interest in anything but the depth of your pockets. Money brings out the worst in people and if often brings out those willing to make you believe they love you, just so that they can have access to your bank accounts. If anything, money is the opposite of love.
HAPPINESS
We’ve all heard that money can buy you a jet ski and that no one has ever been unhappy on a jet ski, but unless you plan on living on that jet ski all year round, money won’t buy you happiness. I’m often left to believe that the only way to be happy is to be happy when you have nothing in the world but yourself. Otherwise, the fear of
loss itself taints your mood, ruining your happiness. Only when you can learn to be happy without a single dollar in your wallet will you learn to be happy under almost any circumstance. Money cannot buy you happiness. In fact, it can make being happy incredibly difficult.
COURAGE
Contrary to popular belief, you aren’t born with courage – or rather, you aren’t born with any more or less courage than the next guy. We are all capable of being courageous, of taking risks to maximize reward. Courage doesn’t mean always facing dangerous situations. It can mean to face yourself and face your illogical fears. We all have fear of failure, fear of being disliked and shunned. We all have little fears here and there, which, when summed all together, can make our lives difficult to live. Courage isn’t something you can buy or sell – it’s something you have to realize you already possess.

LIFE
INTELLECT
Money can buy you all the books in the world. It can get you the best teachers, the best education, the best chance at becoming a highly intelligent individual. What it can’t buy you is the will to do the work necessary to increase your intellectual capacity. Most people are dumb not because they didn’t have access to a great means of education, but rather because they either didn’t believe it was important to learn or because they didn’t believe themselves capable of learning. We live in an age in which information flows freely and anyone just about anywhere can learn whatever it is they would like to learn from the comfort of their homes. No money necessary.
PURPOSE
Let me start off by saying that money in itself is not a purpose worth living for. It’s not really a purpose at all, but a byproduct. Those who are incredibly wealthy aren’t incredibly wealthy because they simply set out to become incredibly wealthy. It may have been otherwise centuries ago, but those days are long gone. Making significant amounts of money is much harder than it used to be – these days you need to first find a purpose. Without a purpose in life we are lost. We are confused. We make poor decisions and end up living lives that we hate with all our soul. Purpose is arguably the most important thing a person can have. It’s not something that can be bought, but rather something that you have to find within yourself.
LEGACY
Money is no legacy – unless you’re George Washington. Legacy is the result of a life lived with purpose, full of success, as well as failures. You see, what few people realize is that although people love to hear about success stories, they love to hear about the struggle that led to that success. No one wants to hear a story without a storyline – what is a race if there is nothing but the start and the finish? A legacy is a life that was lived properly. It’s a life that was lived with such powerful purpose and direction that others are left in awe simply from trying to understand what exactly was accomplished. To leave a legacy behind after you kick the bucket, you have to create massive, positive change, for a massive amount of people. Money may be the tool used to create a legacy – although it certainly doesn’t have to be – but money alone will not buy you a legacy.

Intern
BRIAN GOINGS
It’s becoming that time of year where college juniors and seniors are getting to that place in their lives where they realize that the real world is literally around the corner and that they should focus on their career. It’s why you went to college. It is why you have put yourselves through many headaches trying to figure out the formulas to that mathematical equation called information. It is why you spent late nights and early mornings writing papers or reading books. It is also why you make the library your second home at the end of the semester and do not see daylight until you are done. Well now you must focus on another task, finding somewhere to become that perfect intern. Real internships are nothing like the apprentice where you get famous for being recorded on TV. It really is all about seeing what you have learned over the past four, five, maybe even six years, and putting it all into practice. Hopefully you didn’t have your best friend do your homework or you will be stuck in the corner like a fly on a sticky pad. The next thing you should know is that finding that place to call “home” can be very difficult. You have to research every ounce of that business to make sure you will get the experience you desire. Besides, the job market is all about experience. You need to ask questions that will make you see if you are a right fit. For example, say you want to be a shoe designer and you see that Nike has an internship opportunity. Now when you get there, you need to ask if part of the internship they have has anything dealing with designing the shoes, or at least studying what material will go with another or even color palates. If the answer is no then do not get discouraged because it at least is a foot in the door. On the same note, if they start telling you that their intern(s) will handle store management and that your duty is to make sure the stock room is filled and filed properly, you might want to go another route and look elsewhere. Personally I’ve learned that every door may not be the door for you and that you can put your all into it, but the minute you start to feel more stress and lose sight of what you want to really do, then you may want to leave or you will start to become complacent. Lastly, once you find your “home” do not take advantage of it. Just like you found it, you could lose it. Take charge every day with the task given. Come to work with the mindset of you are actually going to work and put your best foot forward. If there is more than one intern you might want to make your light shine a little bit brighter than the rest. Keep in mind that teamwork is also a necesGVM | 21
sary skill so you might not want to make enemies with your fellow interns. It’s nothing wrong with friendly competition but when it starts to become obvious and spiteful, you will start to look like the rotten apple at the bottom of the bag and will find yourself looking for another internship. Remember, some internships turn into jobs and you could be setting yourself up for success at your future job or a dismissal from even being considered for a job.
To all of the graduating class this year, I bid you good luck on your journeys and may the odds be forever in your favor.

WORD BRAIN BY TRAVIS JONES
If you like getting lost in a word game for hours and hours then WordBrain is for you. The objective of the game is simple to find the correct number of words and connect the letters on the board by sliding your fingers across the tiles. WordBrain is very similar to Zynga’s hit Scramble With Friends, however each puzzle on WordBrain is looking for specific words, not just any word you can find. The app provides endless hours of fun and is extremely ad-
dictive, not to mention as you make your way through the different levels, they become more complex with more tiles and more words you have to find. WordBrain is the perfect distraction when you need to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life. The app is currently available on the Apple App Store and there are many versions similar to the game in the Google Play Store.
- This is a game for the true Word Genius! It starts very easy but gets challenging quickly. Find the hidden words, slide your finger over them, see the puzzle collapse. Do it all in the correct way and order and you will be able to clear the grid. - Be prepared for a very intriguing word puzzle game - sort of a Soduko and Candy Crush Saga twist on Ruzzle & Scramble. - The game features 15 languages and there are 580 levels per language! Even the smartest word game enthusiasts will have a real challenge to complete this game. In fact: only very few has!

FASHION
BY BRITTANY FURR
With the semester coming towards and end, the first day of spring being March 20th, and the Eastern Carolina weather struggling to make up its mind on whether it wants to be hot or cold, many of you may be struggling to find the perfect outfit to rock downtown. Being a college student, I am constantly finding myself torn between the adorable rompers that I found online during class, or that extra round of shots next Thursday night. However, I recently took the time to scope out the Greenville mall and stumbled upon some hidden gems in the always reliable [and affordable] Charlotte Russe store. I roamed around the store for a while, because we all know that is the only way you get the best finds. After scanning the store and finding nothing that I truly wanted, I decided to ask a sales associate for help. Originally, I was looking for something simple that I could jazz up with jewelry, but to my surprise everything that she pulled for me was what I would have described as “loud”. “Patterns are definitely in this season!” she explained to me as I headed into the dressing room. As I went into the dressing room I was reluctant to try the clothes on, because I was convinced they were too tacky for me and I would not like them on. However, much to my surprise, I absolutely loved them! The only thing that I loved more than the clothes were the prices. Charlotte Russe is notorious for having continuous sales and great prices. I bought four dresses that day, each being under $20. Once I got home from the store I started to do a little research
about this pattern phenomenon that I had just discovered. I found that patterns are my new best friend. With the use of patterns, designers can flatter any body type. We all know the old horizontal stripes are slimming trick, but did you know that floral prints are slimming as well? It is all about the fabric and the placement of the patterns on the clothing. Being that every body is different, there are specific types of patterns that flatter each body type differently. For example, petite and slender body types look best in long, vertical stripes. They accentuate the body and show off your curves. If you’ve got more of a long, lean, athletic build, don’t be afraid to try out a loud print. Something solid and plain will make you appear long and lanky, whereas a loud print will attract the eyes towards the torso and away from the limbs. If you’ve got a pear shaped body, the goal is to create a happy medium since your curves are mainly in the bottom. You’re going to want to balance it out with a pattern up top and a simple bottom. If you’ve got the opposite of a pear body shape, and you have a fuller upper half, I bet you can guess where the patterns should be worn – SKIRTS! Play around with skater skirts, and even bodycon minis paired with plain and simple tops. Last, but certainly not least, for our full figured ladies - you want to choose patterns that help accentuate your curves, for example diagonal stripes offer a very flattering look on just about anyone!
