POOL PARTY ETTIQUETTE DO: Maintain a carefree attitude and a laid-back vibe. Remem-
ber, this is a pool party. Anything intense wouldn’t be appreciated. Thus, extreme make-up, extreme-flirting, extreme-drinking, and extreme-rowdiness may not be as welcome as in a club setting.
DON’T: Push your friends into the pool. First of all, it gives the host a mini heart attack. Secondly, you may ruin stuff in the process. Throwing an unknowing friend into a pool may destroy a cell phone kept in his pocket, a perfect pack of fresh cigarettes, wads of cash, a leather wallet, or his waning pride. Plus, it’s very High School. If you can, please abstain from any poolside horsing. DO: Try to make new friends. That is essentially one of the main
purposes for partying. Part of the fun in attending events and parties is meeting new people. Whether to expand your network, clout, or your social circle; it is always an exciting activity to meet new friends. So go on and mingle with other people. Don’t stay in your own little secluded area with your friends. Try to make some small talk with everyone you come across at the party.
DON’T: Drown in the pool. The last thing you would want to happen is to drown in the pool because you are too drunk. I know it may seem silly to have this on the list but please trust me when I say some people need this friendly reminder. DO: Come up to the host. Any host would appreciate their
guests coming up to them for small talk. It builds rapport and
gives the host a sense of how the crowd is enjoying the party.
DON’T: Come in jeans. Come on! It’s a pool party. Although I am not one for strictly implementing a dress code during my events (because it just puts everyone in a flurry to find the perfect outfit) I think poolside party-wear shouldn’t involve jeans. Why? DO: Handle your drinks well. Alright, alright. I know my parties
are infamous for serving really strong cocktails disguised by sweet flavours but hear me out. No matter how hard the drink, or how strong the alcohol, it is always a must that you try to hold it in as well as you can. Drink only as much as you can handle and please drink some water in between glasses of alcohol. This is extraimportant when in a pool party because a lot more accidents can happen by the pool.
DON’T: Play too rough. I know some of my partyphile guests find it fun to break stuff and push people around; but it isn’t very attractive and makes everybody else uncomfortable. Seriously, you should have left all those in pre-school. DO: Try to be respectful to others. Pool parties and skimpy
clothes always come hand-in-hand. This does not give you permission to stare at people; although I am sure it may be very difficult to help. Just try your best to keep your urges contained and be content with a few stolen glances unless you want other party attendees to get freaked out. source: confessionsofapartyphile.blogspot.com

Mommy & Me
Luncheon BY CHRISTINA BOGART
G-Vegas, Please show your support for two great events happening this month. Thursday, May 15th is known as POP Day--Put On Purple Day for Lupus Awareness. This should be an easy task since we already live in Pirate Nation! Secondly, come out and flaunt your purple for the cause at the 3rd Annual “Mommy and Me” Lupus Luncheon on May 16th from 1-3:00pm. Tickets are $25/singles and $40/couples with proceeds benefiting the Lupus Foundation of America. For ticket information, please call 252-375-3556. This event will be held at the Greenville Hilton. What is Lupus? Lupus is a chronic autoimmune disease in which the body’s immune system is basically attacking itself. Over 1.5 million Americans have Lupus and approximately 45,000 North Carolinians have been diagnosed with Lupus. Lupus is more prevalent in women, especially women of color. I myself was diagnosed with it as a teenager. My mother passed away in 1992 from the same disease. This annual Mommy & Me Lupus luncheon, hosted by Latasha Isler of the lupus support group in Pitt county, will be held to honor and recognize those impacted by this invisible disease as well as to honor mothers on Mother’s Day, being that both are celebrated during the month of May. Latasha was diagnosed with Lupus in August 2011 (two days before her 24th birthday), and since then she been determined to bleed purple for the cause! She started and is the facilitator for the Pitt County Lupus Support Group here in Greenville. The support group meets every first Saturday at the United Way of Pitt County. Isler hosted her first community walk last year “Latasha’s Laps for Lupus”. Being an advocate for this cruel and mysterious disease has even led her to the steps of Capi-

tol Hill where she had a chance to speak with member of congress about rights for those with lupus. Lupus is known as an “invisible disease” because those affected by it “don’t look sick.” Lupus impacts each person differently, whether it is through his or her major organs or their skin. These symptoms may come and go through stages known as remissions and flares. Some common symptoms of Lupus are: fatigue, anemia, headaches, weight loss/gain, fevers, painful body aches, swelling and sensitivity to the sun are just a few to name. Lupus is sometimes referred to as “the great imitator” because its symptoms often mimic those of other diseases like Rheumatoid Arthritis, Fibromyalgia and MS. Currently there is no cure for this disease, however with regular check ups, a healthy diet and a variety of medications that may change throughout your lifetime you can live a normal life. To find out more about Lupus as well as information on how to get tested please go to http://www.lupus.org/. You may also reach Ms. Isler at iammorethanlupus@gmail.com to participate in upcoming events, support group meetings or to find out how you can become an advocate.

THE SOMO EXPERIENCE BY TRAVIS JONES
“Ride.” “Show Off.” “We Can Make Love.” These are just three of the hit songs up and coming R&B artist, SoMo is known for. His real name is Joseph but goes by SoMo on stage and sings some of the hit R&B songs on SoundCloud and YouTube. Recently, SoMo had a show in Raleigh, and I had the opportunity of attending the show. First off, the show was at the Lincoln Theatre in Raleigh, which for those you who do not know, is standing room only. Standing for more than four hours between the two openers set, and then SoMo’s set wasn’t the most pleasurable experience. Not to mention, it was as hot as Fifth Street on a bumping Thursday night. Before I get into the actual show, it needs to be noted that the majority of SoMo’s songs are about sex and my friends and I were perhaps some of the oldest people there, with our youngest friend being eighteen. Teenagers being dropped off by their parents swarmed the place, while having their superfan meltdowns. Other than all of that however, the show was great. SoMo sounds just as he does live and performed his entire album as well as renditions of many popular songs, including “Bad,” and “Or Nah.” During one of the most sexual sets of the night, SoMo brought up a fan on stage and sung to her the explicit lyrics of Ty Dolla $ign’s hit song “Or Nah.” SoMo interacted with fans like no other artist I have seen live. He reached out and touched everyone in the front row while pointing out others who were not as lucky to have front row access. If you are a fan of R&B music you should definitely check out SoMo and if you become a fan, you should consider attending one of his shows before his tour ends later this year. SoMo puts up renditions of hit songs on his YouTube channel, TheMrSomo, every Sunday with the tag SoMo Sunday. For more information on SoMo visit his website, officialsomo.com.

Charming Youngsters Show Their Maturity
BY NATHAN BLACK
With the end of March came the end of another successful Spazz Fest. As the final performing artists strummed their last notes or played their wildly unrecognizable instruments to either shocked or enthralled crowds, there was a quiet that seemed to resignate throughout the town once more. On the morning following the end of the festival, it may have appeared like just another work day, but for those that committed themselves to the Fest weekend, they knew that hard pull of having to put back on the work helmet and take off the party hat. During the thick of it all, we sat down with the Charming Youngster, a hip indie band that started here in Greenville and returned to its birthplace once more, after their relocation to the Durham area. The Charming Youngsters appear as an uncharacteristic indie band, that seems to specialize in poppy yet unfamiliar tunes that will leave you dancing and introspective all in the same moment. Having performed heavily around the Greenville area for several years, their fan base had reached an almost expectation as

to what to hear. With the band changing its line-up, a new change in direction and motivation has begun. While meeting up with the boys and girl from the Youngsters, we sat down with them outback of Limelight to talk of their new direction, their new album and how Spazz Fest faired for them. Q: So tell us what’s going on with you guys? What’s new?
GVM MUSIC A: Nolan: We have a new album coming out very soon. We raised money for it with Kick Starter. Physical release will be [tentatively] this summer. Digital release will be sooner. Q: What’s the new album like? What’s it sound like? A: Nolan: A bit self-deprecating. We tried to simplify everything. We did a lot of experimenting on the last record so this one is more back to basics. [Scaled back] Like the Green album (Weezer reference). Q: I noticed Lloyd (Lloyd Newman, former guitarist) is on drums now. How is that for you? A: Lloyd: I feel better at drums which doesn’t mean I’m great but I feel like I’m better. I feel like we’re turning a new page. We’re almost like a new band. We just wanna do new stuff. Q: I also noticed KJ (Kathryn Jackson, backup singer) is a lot more pronounced in this current work. A: Kathryn: Yeah, I’ve graduated from tambourine to full-time keyboard player. I came into the band late, they had been playing songs for a while so now it’s nice to be a part of the collaborative effort. Q: Your music is often times very poppy and uplifting. What do you do to try to keep your music so positive? A: Nolan: It’s always been important to have a duality to our music, a contrast. The lyrics are always [somber] and there’s songs about nostalgia but there’s also songs about depression and being down and stuff like that. But I guess the reason for that is I don’t always want to hear angry music that’s angry. There’s other ways to make songs like that be palatable. A: Shaun (Shaun Koenig, bass player): I don’t need music to make me feel down about myself. I can do that on my own. Q: How are you liking the crowd this year at Spazz Fest? A: Shaun: There’s a definite vibe of new, young people and old folkies like us who fan the flame.
Q: What acts are you excited to see this year at Spazz Fest? A: Nolan: I wanna see cosmic Spazz Fest. They do a bunch of avant garde type music and I’m interested in that. I see out music to be surprised, that’s one of the great things about the Spazz you can’t find stuff like that just anywhere. Not even really in the triangle. A: KJ: I’m excited about the parking deck. It feels like my hometown is growing up into a real city. A: Shaun: I love the fact that no matter how long I’m away every time I come back the Spazz [effort] is still here. I’m just glad to see that. A: Lloyd: Cosmic Spazz, Lonnie Walker and the Love Language. But there was so much energy at The Capital show. That was good. Q: If you could have one high end dream show, everywhere, what would it be? A: Shaun: SNL would be awesome. A: Nolan: SXSW. But it’s hard to tell who we would play with. I can’t measure who we would be paired with. A: Shaun: Lonnie Walker would be good to play with again. I like playing with friends. As they closed finished playing the outdoor show at Christy’s Euro Pub, The Charming Youngsters were met with a well rounded applause. Though having went through some member changes in the past year, the group continues to deliver solid music and knows how to keep the crowds moving to the beat. The new album by them, called Middle Weights, is due out for a summer release. Be sure to look for them on Facebook and keep up with their news. The Charming Youngsters are Lloyd Newman, Kathryn Jackson, Nolan Smock and Shaun Koenig.

FEARLESS
FIGHTING BY PETE RIVERA
Rodrigo Galvanosi, founder of Fearless Fighting, chose Greenville, NC to show case his phenomenal school of the arts. As a black belt in Kempo Karate, Tae Kwon Do, Sanuces Ryu Jiu Jitsu, Wing Chun, Muay Thai, and Shaolin Gung Fu, he humbly accredits his masters (all listed at www.fearlessfighting.com) for his ability to transcend the valuable lessons taught in his school. As an accomplished boxer, Thai boxer, and wrestler, he further accredits his mentors Kenny Johnson, Juan LaPorte, Apidej Sit Hirun, Gustavo Machado, and Allan Maravilla for his ability to fuse all of the above disciplines into the most comprehensive MMA lesson plan offered on the east coast, earning the name “Professor” for himself. Fearless Fighting is founded on Rodrigo’s philosophy of “approaching life fearlessly, pursuing whatever you’d like, always giving one hundred percent.” It’s no wonder he has been hand picked to train the Navy Seals up in Norfolk, Va. “They are so humble and eager to learn” Rodrigo says about the Seal teams who have become like brothers to him, breaking bread at his dinner table from time to time. Another elite group of battle-tested warriors come out of the notorious MMA school called Black House. They too have also bonded with Rodrigo while rolling around on the mat. UFC legend, Anderson Silva is pictured on the left, while Lisette, Rodrigo’s daughter, is pictured with George Saint Pierre on the right. GSP is yet another UFC legend and furthermore, a shoe-in for the UFC Hall of Fame. GVM | 11
Fearless Fighting school of the arts teaches four main disciplines: Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Boxing, Muay Thai, and Mixed Martial Arts, aka MMA. Different coaches teach in different areas of the gym. Rodrigo’s philosophy is “quality, not quantity”, so he will only fill up his classes with ten people per class. His coaching ability to connect with his classes is truly remarkable and is best reflected in how age groups are divided. “Littles” are four to eight years old, “Youths” are nine to twelve, “Teens” are thirteen to sixteen, and “adults” are seventeen and up. The bonding with Rodrigo starts off out of the gate in the free initial consultation. He will do a personal assessment, define your physical conditioning goals, assess your level of interest into which disciplines, and determine if someone is a good fit into his ‘feel good’ gym culture. Since he has fully championed the ‘anti-bullying’ campaign and ‘anti-gang’ movement, the Professor does not yield on allowing a bad apple to enter into his coveted school of the arts. F irst responders, Veterans, Military, Vidant, and PCC & ECU students all get discounts to lend to his professional gym culture. Drop by 1830 Old Firetower Rd Suite 2 and meet Rodrigo for yourself! It’s never too late to learn a new discipline while getting physically fit on this soul cleansing journey. GRAND OPENING is June 20th with a MMA celebrity meet & greet. DAREDEVIL:
BY NATHAN BLACK
THE BEST BLIND DATE When I first heard about Netflix putting out a Marvel show set around Daredevil, I did my best not to over hype it. I am after all a serious critic--at times. I have been known to fanboy out and go overboard on my reactions, but when it came to this series I told myself to take it with as much a unbiased stance as I could. This took some concentration as I was having to filler through, not just years of the comic, but the nostalgia of seeing the character from the Spider-Man cartoon show from the 90s. I will not even take time to mention the sacrilege that was the Ben Affleck, Daredevil of 2003; but, needless to say, it’s the reason nerdom is up in arms about Affleck being set to play Batman in the forthcoming Batman vs Superman film. An entirely different article could be written just about this one sub-thought but I digress. The new Netflix series, Daredevil, seems to take all the right cues from modern action films and leaves nothing but viewers hearts racing with excitement. The fight scenes are some of the most well balanced and intense I’ve seen to date in any media. Coupled with amazing direction that makes long takes of many of the fight sequences, the audience gets that feeling of the hard earned victories and pains the main character has to go through just to serve the justice he seeks. To put it simply, when he wins, we win, and victory is sweet--sometimes. The parts outside of the beatings end of being of interest too, of course. The level of thinking behind the show appears more than one-dimensional. And while our main character, Matt Murdock (Daredevil, played by Charlie Cox), the blind lawyer/superhero, triumphs foes by night, his daytime activities seem to work in conjunction with his evening shift. There is an interesting dynamic as Matt plays between straight-laced citizen, litigator and vigilante (rogue) who criminals fear. In truth, the Matt the audience sees by day is the perfect disguise, so sheepish and quiet. Matt fights to not appear vulnerable, which most confuse for self-consciousness of his blindness, but it is more because of the loss of his father and the tremendous responsible Matt feels in the wake of his death. Combined with an equally perfect best friend, Foggy Nelson, played by Elden Henson, and Karen Page, played by Deborah Ann Woll, their secretary and first client whom Nelson and Murdock save from the shadowy maul of a crime syndicate, Matt has his back up. The same syndicate that tried to kill Karen is run by the reclusive businessman, Wilson Fisk, played by Vincent D’Onofrio, A.K.A. the Kingpin. These make up the majority of Daredevil’s supporting cast along with a few surprising characters that help Murdock along the way. The big pull away character out of these has to be D’Onofrio’s
GVM | 13
Kingpin. Channeling all the energy and mystery of Charles Foster Kane, the Kingpin is equal parts stiff, shy and well-mannered, sophisticated gentlemen, but at the same time a vicious, power hungry, delusional criminal who takes the idea of a means-to-anend to the next level. The Kingpin is neither all evil nor actually good, but residing somewhere just enough in plain sight to keep his intentions masked. In this point, the Kingpin becomes a perfect foil to Matt who works in many of the same ways but only with different ideologies guiding them. With plenty of action, reminiscent of The Dark Knight, Snowpiercer and Oldboy, and enough investigating drama and buddy cop vibes coming off Foggy, Daredevil makes a perfect example of how good a Netflix series can be. With plenty of fun easter eggs and tropes from the comics, old fans should be well satisfied as well as people that are new to the character. Probably the best development from the series has to be the Kingpin which will definitely have to make a return appearance if all goes well. Daredevil pushes the bar even higher for Marvel without any flying metal suits of iron or being a norse god. It keeps things close to the ground as well as close to the heart. Season two cannot get here fast enough.

Lets change the atmosphere!!
BY BRIAN GOINGS
Some people have gotten to the state of mind where they feel that they have “arrived” as Nene from the Real Housewives of Atlanta puts it. They have professed to the world that they have become some sort of elitist and that only a few people are allowed in their social circles. Why is that? I do understand that not everyone gets along and that you should not associate yourself with people who’s behavior patterns and habits are negative; but who defines what is negative? What scale in life do we determine things that are negative? At some point people do mature but pasts, and we all have them, continue to be brought up and seem to stain the new purity that we have found. We have changed but people still refer to the blemish that has faded years ago and that makes them better. So society reveals. The picture you see with this article has been used as one of many images to portray this type of thinking. The term came from the movie “Mean Girls” yet lots of people have portrayed this way of living for years and not one person has said anything about it in this city...until now. I wonder what hierarchy approved of this status and why people feel that because they have advanced themselves that they feel other people do not deserve the same chances and opportunities that they have. As someone who works a lot within the community here in Greenville, I have been able to sit back and watch a lot of the “elites” do the very things that they say they hate or shun people for. Tisk tisk, yet you openly use your power to formulate passive discrimination against your brother or sister. I’m not trying to cause a scene, but I do wish to see a change in the dynamics of how things operate in this city. We can come together

for tragedies and sporting events but why not in our everyday living? Greenville used to be fun and now it has become somewhat of a burden to some. People are quick to throw the word diversity around yet the only thing diverse is the clothing in their closets both literal and figurative. Eventually, those that have been on the lower end of this cast system will have had enough and revolt against this systematic way of life. The strategies used to hold people back will no longer work and eventually everyone will have their versions of why you can’t sit with them. I just don’t want Greenville to lose what’s left of it’s humanity. I’m tired of meeting people from other areas saying this is the worst place to be because of the social interactions that they have had with the people here. Come on Greenville we are better than that. That’s how YOU raised me.

Greenville, Raleigh, Wilmington, and Asheville have all felt Psylo Joe’s High-Energy Funk Rock revolution. The sound is reminiscent of early Grateful Dead modernized, and yet it retains all of its passion, and charisma. The soulful saxophone blended with iconic guitar work, and topped off with a Funk, and Jazz laden Rhythm section make this band a force to be reckoned with. A multitude of styles combine to create a truly epic experience that is both mind bending, and unique. Members Brian Quintard, George Thornton, Hunter Parker, Matt Smith, and Thomas Barrington have been together just over a year, and yet they are setting the new standard. Their first gig was a Battle of the Bands at Peasant’s Pub. It was the first time they had played as a full band, and not only did they win, but soon afterwards they were opening shows for highly respected acts such as the original Wailers of Bob Marley fame. From Festivals to the intimate club setting, Psylo Joe has been blazing an impressive trail. The Band is expanding exponentially into new areas of influence including Virginia, and Charlotte, but as Greenville natives they think of Peasant’s as home, and where they grew up musically. They have high hopes for Greenville’s music scene to be revitalized by venues such as Crossbone’s Tavern. The Band is putting together a massive 2 set show at Crossbone’s Tavern on May 8th for ECU’s graduation celebration. One of the best shows of the year to be sure. They are also have written a full blown studio album, and are in the process of recording it in the very near future, and in the meantime you can find archival footage of live shows, and Booking info on Facebook, YouTube, and PsyloJoe. com.
