IMAGINE MUSIC FESTIVAL

A Beautiful Way torSay Goodbye to Summe

BY ARRAN WRIGHT

Right in the heart of Atlanta, nestled amongst the lights of the city, are three beautiful venues. Historic Fourth Ward Park, Masquerade Music Park, and Clear Creek Basin may be quiet today, but in just a few short weeks these three spots will combine to create a light and sound dream world known as Imagine Music Festival. Voted as one of the “Top Festivals in the World” (Fest300) and one of the largest “Up and Coming Festivals” (USAToday), IMF joins the heightened energy of Atlanta with cirque style performances and a legendary line-up to create a musical and visuals explosion full of bass, lights, and love.

GVM | 5

At this center of this once in a lifetime experience is their stellar line-up stacked with today’s premier EDM artists including DADA LIFE, THE GLITCH MOB, LIL JON, and my personal favorite GRIZ, just to name the short list of a long list of incredible performers. If you want to be part of the adventure and live the overwhelming beauty for yourself, go to imaginefestival.com for full information and details regarding hotel packages and ticket information. Don’t let the summer end without making a memory that will last you a lifetime. Be in a virtual dreamland and IMAGINE with me.

LIFE

WHO’S YOUR

HERO? BY BRIAN GOINGS

I’m a huge fan of the superhero world and very excited to see that so many superheroes are coming back to television and the big screens. It has taken me back to my childhood and then some. According to Entertainment weekly, in a few years we should be seeing a few more villains fighting along with the heros. This is good because everyone loves to see a good battle between the good the bad and the betrayed!! I hear Magnus will be joining the slew of villains trying to take over the world (bwahahahahahaaa)....now that I have gotten that one cheesy laugh in, I want to know which hero you would like to see come back on television? Personally I would like to see Aquaman because I feel like there hasn’t been that many aquatic heros present. I also can’t wait to see how the

GVM | 9

Justice league would be formed. I know I’m jumping the gun on a few things but I missed a lot of the origins as a kid and comic books were not an option so yes, in a way I want to play catch up. A friend of mine has actually started me on the original comic books of Superman and I must say I love history and going back to the older versions of the comics that we love today. If you would like to learn more you should definitely start out with the comics. Its great to see how the comics tell about our society back then until now. I would not be surprised if DC or Marvel come out with a few that surrounds our current political and social justice wars. It would be interesting to see what our favorite heros would do to keep the peace.

Lastly I am excited to report that Geek Out 2 (Greenville’s Comicon) is back on the books!! I enjoyed myself last year seeing several characters from different comics and exploring the thousands of comic books at the tips of my fingertips. And there are more than just comics, action figures, posters, drawings, and my favorite, food!! The date is August 15th at the Masonic lodge on 1104 Charles Blvd. The time is 12-5:00pm and the tickets are $5.00. Tickets can be purchased at Nostalgia Newstand of Greenville, Hurricane Comics in Washington, Game Stop, World Coolest Comics of Winterville, and Ricks Comics in Goldsboro. So come out and I hope to see you there!

LIFE

Do You Know Who's in Your Circle?

BY BRIAN GOINGS

With everything that is happening in our society today; it makes you wonder who can you trust. Are the people in your life truly who they say they are? I’m not trying to cause any paranoia activity but that is the reality of it all. With the Confederate flag situation, I have seen so many disappointing comments and memes. Yes, it is showing that the division in our country, whenever it comes to racial relations, has not been solved but covered up. I can speak on this because after graduating from college and moving back home, I had a negative racial slur thrown at me. I’m a forgiving person but I never let that go. Most recently I witness a fellow employee make a few racial comments about a few others. It disturbed me because all of us would be considered minorities, so why put down your fellow “brother/sister”? Greenville, if you want to increase your businesses and if you want to see this city grow, the fighting and discrimination has to stop. Here at G-Vegas magazine, you will find the most and I do mean the most diverse staff that you can find. That’s why I have stuck with the magazine and why I will always support this magazine. G-vegas has always tried to combine the masses together but personal matters will destroy what peaceful situations there are. You cannot tell how a person is by just looking at them. That is judgement based on

GVM | 13

preconceived notions and has always proven to make a jackass out of anyone. You must actually meet and get to know people for who they are. Yes, it takes time and actually spending time with people to know how they act, what they like or dislike. It’s just like dating only without the passion. I’m not trying to force relationships onto people, but it is better to know people and find out that they are a liar than to say it without knowing the person and making the same judgement call. That is why there are a lot of people who act hostile towards people they do not know. Who wants to live in a world of destruction? Living peaceably with your neighbor is a lot better than always being hostile and living scared. Most of the time, the people you think are threats are not and the ones you think you can trust are the ones plotting against you. Really get to know people and see what you will find. For the upcoming freshmen, you will realize this; the people you start out with may not be the people you continue to call whenever you finish. You lose touch, people show their true colors, or you just grow apart. It’s all apart of life but just make sure that you never go into a relationship fully trusting someone without getting to know them.

LIFE

Happy Couples, Happy Life.... Maybe?? BY RANDY MOORE

The Public Face

When you’re mourning over a lost love, sometimes you just don’t want to go out in public. You know you need to get out and meet people. But you’re thinking…I can’t even! Everywhere you turn, there’s a happy couple holding hands, or smooching in public, or walking around with her hand hanging onto his belt loop and his hand on her rear end. And of course, they’re gorgeous together! You see them on social media too. They’re smiling sweetly at the camera, looking oh so cool and oh so hot. Where do they grow these people? I mean, really!

think these people are amazing pairs and role models for successful couples? How much do you know that contradicts the image of those perfect relationships? With how many couples? That’s not to say that all couples are unhappy. Or that all those happy people are fakers. Or that all relationships will fail. It’s just food for thought when you’re making comparisons and believing that you come up short.

The Hard Truth

It can be a bit depressing when you’re feeling chronically single. But, seriously! Time for a reality check….

In those times of self-doubt and disappointment, remember how much hard work goes into those apparently blissful relationships. And how many doubts and fears you hear when your best pal tells you about the latest couple challenge and seeks your advice.

Those images you see of blissfully happy couples everywhere are really just BS. You’re seeing the socially acceptable face of their relationships. Many of these people are struggling too in some way, maybe much worse than you are. They just don’t dwell on their problems in public.

Don’t think you’re worse off than everyone else just because you’re single. Some people are staying in relationships they hate. Some people are starting up relationships that won’t work out. And some people are working on relationships that aren’t perfect. Some, too, are truly, madly, deeply in love and will stay that way. Some care about their partners in ways that no one else can fathom.

If you’re thinking, “What’s wrong with me? Why is everyone else in a great relationship?” Think again!

Just remember that social bliss is sometimes so much BS. But you should still dream. And still expect bliss in your life. Just recognize that you’re not the only one who’s having to work for it.

Just because someone’s in a relationship, doesn’t mean that it’s great. Think about your friends and family. How many outsiders

BACK TO SCHOOL

3 HABITS TO KILL & BUILD BY ANTONIO JACKSON

KILL Procrastination

Waiting until the last minute to complete an assignment is like loosing love and never finding it again. Don’t let the pain haunt you. Preparation is everything and knocking out assignments as soon as possible can free up your time. Time to do the things you love and be with the people you care about without a cloud of concern sitting on your shoulders.

Excessive Spending

Saving money on textbooks? Priceless. Spending leftover refund checks on countless nights downtown, drinks every night at Fitzgerald’s, and a blunt every morning? Stupid. Don’t forget why you came to a 4-year university at the best college in the state: To create your future. Public Health major? Email your professors, take a week off, and take a flight to the APHA in Chicago. Textile Design major? Take a flight to NYFW. Spend smart now and let your future be prosperous.

Social Media Addiction

Multitasking KILLS true focus. Instead, get into the habit of not checking Twitter, Snapchat, Facebook, Instagram until AFTER you finish an hour of studying. And yes, GroupMe is a form of social media. Be intentional. Invest your time into your own life goals today and you won’t regret it later.

Weave these tips into your own values and find your balance early! Set the tone for your semester! Much success to you!

BUILD Commit Yourself to a Morning Routine

Take control of your mind and get going in the morning! A cold shower can give you th jolt you need to wake up. And don’t worry, after 20 seconds you’re body adjusts. Not to mention the health benefits of cold showers as it helps to preserve your body in the long run. Even something as simple as playing inspirational lectures while you brush your teeth can begin to alter the way you look at mornings and turn you into your best person fresh out of bed!

Random Acts of Kindness & Generosity

Evil is a cancer. Kill cancer. Try giving a casual “hey” to the person you see every morning on the way to that 8am lecture. The domino effect is real and you never know where one word may lead you as you set the mood like Spotify for your day and another person’s day as well! Invite that person who shares notes with you to a free lunch at Chic-Fil-A or Panda Express. Showing your appreciation in unexpected ways can have unexpected benefits.

Self Sufficiency

Do not rely on a “workout partner.” Take it upon yourself to get out of bed and go work out. Do not have that “friend” come over to give you a “personal massage.” Love your own body. Give it just 15 minutes of yoga everyday. Do not wait until you have a study partner. Schedule your own study room in Joyner. Let your true friends come to you and let the fake ones get lost. I assure you, the quality of your life will improve dramatically.

LIFE

EMERALDS OF THE CITY WHERE THEY ARE NOW COLLEEN RHODES I’m proud to say that I was the winner of the very first GVegas bikini contest in 2007. At that time, I was working full time as a Network Analyst at ECU, bartending at Levels in downtown Greenville part time, and going to school for my Masters. Since that time, I got married, received my Masters in Information Security from ECU, and went on to work as a Consulting Systems Engineer at World Wide Technology. I live in Raleigh during the week with my husband and 2 dogs, but still have a house in Greenville that we usually go back to on weekends.

Prior to the contest, I never would have imagined myself being in a bikini contest. In fact, I didn’t even wear a twopiece bathing suit until I was 22 years old! I can honestly say that being in the contest helped me with some of my insecurities and boosted my self-esteem. Just as importantly, I had a great time and met some wonderful friends in the process. I still have my calendar and look back fondly on the photos and the memories.

EMERALDS OF THE CITY WHERE THEY ARE NOW MANDA PYLANT Whew! It’s been a year already? Crazy how time flies by. Since the 2014 calendar I’ve been busy making a baby, getting engaged, working for Hooters and American Values Contracting selling roofs, a little photography on the side and being a little miss DIY crafter. When I had the opportunity to compete for the calendar, I almost didn’t do it. I’m so happy that I changed my mind, sucked it up and placed. I’m more of a behind the camera girl and the calendar boosted my confidence and I was able to prove myself wrong and became Miss June 2014! I can check “being in a calendar” off my bucket list now.

I had the most PERECT baby girl March 24, 2015, her name is Riley Rae. She has completely stolen my heart. My fiancé gave the most PERFECT surprise proposal at the Opryland Hotel in Nashville,TN while I was on vacation. I’m so happy with how far I’ve come in the past few years. Now I have a baby to raise, a wedding to plan, and an amazing life to keep cruisin through, hopefully with minimal speed bumps. “Flow with whatever may happen, and let your mind be free: Stay centered by accepting whatever you are doing. This is the ultimate.”

EMERALDS OF THE CITY WHERE THEY ARE NOW ASHLEE ROSE

Hi G-Vegas Peeps! Well….Being a G-Vegas girl back in 2008 was one of the best experiences at that time in my life. I was one of the very first to jump on this crazy ride with who I now call my “G-Vegas family”. They have helped me in so many ways including boosting my self confidence, growing as a person, and giving me a more outgoing personality. For those things I will forever be grateful! There are so many memories and experiences that may have never been possible without G-Vegas. While with G-Vegas, I obtained 2 Associates Degrees and furthered my career to land my dream job. As of now, I currently have my dream job at Anheuser-Busch out of St. Louis where I work from home as a Category Space Analyst. With this job I get to travel, meet

new people, and also experience new things. I recently became a home owner, bought two vehicles, and started back at ECU to puruse my Bachelor’s Degree in Business all on my own. As far as modeling, just a few weeks ago I did a photo shoot for 99X the radio station. I was really excited when I was asked to do this and even more when I got to use my Mustang as a prop. I want to give a big thanks to Mark Manna Photography & Holly Phelps (hair and makeup artist) who can be looked up on Facebook. So to the girls who may be hesitant to become a G-Vegas girl, DON’T BE!! You will learn, experience, and enjoy every moment! #UpForWhatever Peace, Love, and Happiness, ASHLEE
