LIFE

THE LIGHT SWITCH RELATIONSHIP BY RANDY MOORE

Does this relationship sound familiar? You’re together, but it’s rocky. You split, but it’s never quite over. You stay friends, but wind up back together. You try to work it out, but before you know it, the cycle starts all over again. It sounds bad, but not all on-again/off-again relationships are unhealthy. According to researchers who study them, sometimes they can even strengthen a relationship. Here’s some advice that works whether you’re currently “on” or “off.” Ground Rules Can Be Good Many couples who split up try to stay friends but don’t always know how to define their new relationship. If you’re splitting up - but leaving the door open to getting back together -- try to figure out together how much you’ll continue to see each other, whether you’ll be seeing other people, what will and won’t change about your relationship. Don’t Make It a Habit Researchers report that the more breakups and renewals within a union, the less satisfaction, more conflict and more uncertainty

GVM | 5

those couples report. They also - predictably - get less support from friends and family. The more times you’re “off,” the less likely you’ll stay “on.” Make It Work For You But the on/off couples who are happy have a secret: they used the breakup and reconciliation to work on themselves or the relationship’s problems. Consider new rules or ways of doing things. Discuss the issues that have led to conflicts in the past and how you can resolve them. You can’t just sit around hoping things will be better next time around. End It for Good If you’ve tried to make it work, but it never seems to improve, getting on a positive, stable “on” may be impossible. When you’re ready to stay “off” for good, you’ll need to go cold turkey. End things firmly, without implying the possibility of working things out later. Try to stop (or at least really limit) contact and make an effort to move on. The researchers say renewals are less likely when partners start dating other people.

straight from

New Bern hip-hop artist Dreel looks to put his stamp on the North Carolina music game Hip-hop lives in all parts of North Carolina — you just have to know where to find it. Damian “Dreel” Norman is looking to join a long list of talented artists from the state, such as J. Cole, Petey Pablo, Rapsody and King Mez amongst others. The New Bern rapper has been working on building a buzz locally in the Craven and Pitt county area while, also traveling across the nation to provide another dimension to the perceptions of the Tar Heel State in regards to music. Recently, I had a conversation with Dreel about his influences and future work, among other topics: JS: Talk about your name, how did you get it? D: Ever since I was young. When I started rapping at 15, I was going by “Dash” and when I had my posse, TSFA (Temporary Struggle, Forever Ambition), I went by “Dreel”. The rap group didn’t work out, but the name stuck. JS: Where does influence come from? D: Family, and really just a lot of people. Musically, I was influenced a lot by Kendrick Lamar and Eminem. I always liked music — my mom said I knew every word from every song that played on the radio. I love all types of music: rock, rap, and other different styles. JS: Well, describe your style a bit for someone who hasn’t heard of you. D: I feel like I have a lot of originality — I’m not trying to be anyone else. As an artist, I bring a different type of style to my music and I feel as though what I do is unique.

GVM | 7

JS: What have been your best and worst moments music-wise? D: The best moment I would say is getting on stage in front of people and performing. It feels good going up there and seeing them on stage. The worst part is just trying to get my music out there. It can be pretty hard when people don’t want to support. It can be tough for local artists. JS: What is your take on the N.C. rap music scene? D: I feel like there’s a lot of talent in the area and people don’t get enough help. There’s so much potential here, but nobody wants to give credit to them. I want to put out something that’s hot for the whole state, to where people say “that’s that guy from N.C.” JS: What are your future plans musically? D: I’m working on an EP right now, which should be coming out around the beginning of next year. I’m also looking to get a music video shot around that time for my new single “Carolina” and I’ll be going to California in January for two shows. JS: Where can people find your music? D: They can listen to it on Soundcloud at soundcloud.com/therealdreel and Reverbnation at reverbnation.com/tsfa. They can also follow me on Twitter @therealdreel.

Jessica Jones (Why We Can’t Help but be in Love) BY NATHAN BLACK

Since the mass success of Daredevil, Marvel has been pushing to put more content out through their television studio. Still, some characters, like Daredevil, deal to close to the dark end of the spectrum, and Jessica Jones is no exception. With one of the most diabolical villains, The Purple Man, a character whose backstory pulses with the implications of rape and psychological trauma, is at the heart of Jessica’s story. In this case, Jessica Jones is not the typical superhero story where the main character must defeat internal and external forces in order to reach some goal. Instead, Jones’s story is almost all internal and constantly wrestling with demons either because of The Purple Man, childhood abuse, alcoholism or trust issues. Due to these issues, her super strength becomes the personification of people turning to violence in order to deal with psychosis. Do not be fooled, there is plenty of action in Jones’s story outside the internal, but it does build characterization in its own time, much the same

GVM | 11

way Daredevil did when first starting out. Other forces at work here tangle her with Luke Cage, another superhero who will have his own series soon enough. Their relationship becomes both intense and jarring for her as she begins to have real feelings for him despite her calloused state. Jessica struggles to turn to her friends for help but works with her step sister and even a former addict to help in her search for The Purple Man. Jessica Jones is intense and goes where many superhero stories dare not descend. In the end it is unexpected but gripping all the same. Because there aren’t many stories known about Jones, it will be interesting to see where they go next with her character and who else she will run into. Another success story in the bank for Marvel Studios. Final Grade: -A (Would have liked to see more Jessica and Luke Cage team-ups)

Master of Anything But Nonsense BY NATHAN BLACK

Many people probably remember Aziz Ansari from his popular stand-up specials, if not, from Park and Recreation on NBC. In both instances, he plays a quite lovable, yet slightly selfish, man-child, whose affinity toward 90s R&B and rap culture carries over into what makes him so recognizable. For his newest work, Master of None, on Netflix, we experience a completely different Ansari who is not only the lovable, nitwit with swagger, but a completely realized individual that has more depth to him than ever considered. With the mass of popular media spreading shows with full casts and several characters of interest, Master of None seems to find the same energy and captivation while only following Ansari’s character, Dev. Dev, the main character, whose life is semi-autobiographically based on Ansari, works through the classic tale of trying to “make it” in New York City: struggling as an actor, searching for love in sparklingly and refreshingly new ways, all the while dealing with being first generation asian american, and dealing with the social dilemmas of racism and marginalization. The incredible thing is these social issues are handled in such a way that they are not beaten over the audience’s head, but shown as they actually are, annoyances that hinder real life people from achieving goals that should be viable. Dev’s equal parts composure and frustrated responses toward these problems mirrors the fatigue and determination of many people’s everyday experience. With such a heavy amount of personal life experience

GVM | 13

added to this story, mostly because of Ansari’s writing and directing most of the season, Master of None moves with an honesty and focused approach toward modern dating and culture that few shows have ever been brave enough to face. In the end, it is less about the problems of society, but the problems that we all experience and Dev’s humanity that speaks above all else. We are shown relationships in their most raw and dispassionate of forms, they appear as movements of habit, rather than grand gestures born out of fleeting experience. And with each experience we see how each experience either brings us closer or pulls us further apart. With a wildly interesting cast and even Ansari’s real life parents added in the mix, Master of None is by far one of the most hilarious, moving and eye opening comedies to come out in recent years. It applies all the simple yet brilliant hilarity of Seinfeld and Curb Your Enthusiasm with the appeal of the text-happy, social media junkie generation, all in one--complete with hipster soundtrack that should make Pitchfolk kids gush. Neither contrived nor formulaic, this show reaches to the heart of modern times and reminds us that we are all still struggling to find ourselves through family, love and life. Final Grade : A+++ (cannot begin to explain how wonderful and special this show it)

THE REINTRODUCTION OF ALMOST KINGS BY CHRISTINA BOGART Almost Kings have been together for 6 years now, and are completely independent. Meaning, they have no financial backing, no record label, no management, they travel show to show raising their own money, relying completely on the support and love of fans to help them. When they say they make the music for the fans they TRULY mean just that. In February of 2012 they were unknowingly entered in a contest called “Garage to the Grammys” by Danny Helms’ (bassist for Almost Kings) cousin and before they even knew it the votes were pouring in. Within the last three days of the contest not once did they even teeter from the #1 spot and became the winners of the competition out of over 900 nationwide bands that were submitted. Almost Kings were on their way to Hollywood to perform in the “Gig of a Lifetime” the day before the 57th Grammy awards. They became the first ever band to perform on a platform of that stature unsigned. Votes were even coming in internationally without ever touring out of the states simply by posting videos via YouTube. “We could not have won this contest without the AK family,” said Bryan Bozeman’ (Front man for Almost Kings). In 2014, the guys decided to start the Indiegogo Campaign which was a way to get the fans involved in creation of the upcoming new album. “We hit the road and never looked back. You guys kept us on the road, you kept us alive. We don’t need someone telling us what we need to do, changing our direction. Telling us who we need to be, we want to be what you guys want us to be. We want to CHANGE THE GAME.” Quoted by Bozeman in the campaign promotional video released last year. Also included in the video was a list of perks that fans could receive for their support. GVM | 17

Let me tell you it was insane some of the things you could have purchased, anywhere from signed CDs, hand written lyrics, instruments used to record albums, private BBQs, even LIFETIME VIP passes. The final goal of this was to create an “industry standard” album. For those of you who are not familiar with that term, usually a band will sign with a record label, and be given money upfront to record a studio album which is radio quality, that is just not reality for an independent band such as Almost Kings. HOWEVER, With the Loyalty and Support of the AK Family not only were they able to successfully do so but within a matter of two weeks of uploading the first music video of “Never Gonna Happen” the first new song released, it received over 50,000 views on YouTube. After Uploading the Entire EP of the four new songs it also received an overwhelming response as well. I can say it is safe to say the Reintroduction is not needed at all. These boys were never gone. As far as the new music…. utterly amazing. I don’t want to say a whole new direction, but a side of AK we haven’t seen before. I have always described them in the past to people who have never heard of them as a Beastie boys meets Linkin Park with Eminem as their front man type band. Now, I honestly can’t even begin to describe them. Their versatility has blind-sided me. “Never Gonna Happen” I literally have listened to on repeat since the day it came out, and still can’t think of a sound to call it. The lyrics and the music and this entire EP are mind blowing. “All My Life” Sounds like an Anthem for the upcoming year and I could totally hear it on the radio airwaves.

GVM

SOUND

It just gets you pumped up! “Right Mind” gives us a side of Almost Kings that we have never seen before. Dare I call this a ballad? It showcases all their individual talents more, it’s a slower pace song along with Boze typical rap that’s almost hypnotically indecipherable. “Hey Yo” makes me just want to rage or go off… No pun intended… but speaking of… “Go Off” really hits me, it features a guitar solo by guitarist Ryan Yunker that I can sum up in one word: speechless. I have followed these boys over the years. I have seen them play to 10 people, 100s, and even 1,000s. I have heard of them being nominated for awards, seen them play on the Xgames, I’ve watched them play countless shows, be interviewed by MTV, I have seen them fight for what they want, sweat blood and tears, and I can really just feel it in this song. There is no telling what the next year will bring for the boys, However I can tell you this much Almost Kings truly have changed the game in my eyes. As far as whatever 2016 may hold for them, I hope you find yourself a part of it. To find out more information and tour dates you can log onto www. JUDE

BUCKINGHAM BY CHRISTINA BOGART

With a name so sophisticated as Jude Buckingham, and the stage presence he carries so admiralty well, there really is no need for any other introduction. I have only had the pleasure of knowing Jude for a few months now, however I have never been greeted with anything less than a huge smile and a gracious hug. This young man is so full of life, energy, and talent. I can’t even began put it into words how amazing Mr. Buckingham sincerely is. The great things we will be seeing from this young man in the future are far beyond anyone’s expectations. Originally from Detroit Michigan, now Residing in Atlanta GA, Jude has been touring with Almost Kings for over a year now. The very first time I saw him perform I was utterly captivated by his ability and raw talent. He truly is a crowd pleaser. While on tour he has had the chance to work alongside Kilo Ali, Ying Yang twins, Bone thugs n Harmony, Framing Hanley, Non point, and many other artists. He recently released an LP entitled “Kevin Vs Jude Trilogy” produced by Adamus which really showcases the versatility of his lyrical ability. Previously Jude had released a full length album entitled “Growing Pains” in 2013. I am never disappointed with Jude’s performances. Even anticipating them at every event even more so than the main acts themselves. He puts on such an amazing show that you can’t help to be so memorized by him. You can honestly see his passion and love for the music in every song, it’s a natural talent. This isn’t something to be taught. Jude Buckingham will be a name years from now we will remember. One of the things I adore about Jude is not only his down to earth personality, but his compassion and sincere support and integrity towards other artists he works with. No matter who he is on stage with he takes the time to give them props, make sure the crowd is involved, and always pays his dues towards the other artists. He is such a kind person which is rare in this industry. Jude describes himself as “a suburban Detroit emcee, who behind the mic has no fear. Jude finds his music as a release, a way to express himself, a therapy, and it shows with his sometimes raw and emotional lyrics that come from his guts.”

PARTY GAME IDEAS Whether you are having a Christmas party with family and friends or an office party with co-workers, here’s a list of games that will add some fun to your celebration. 1. Fill the Christmas stocking. Divide into teams and have the participants race to fill their team’s hanging stocking with a spoonful of wrapped candy. 2. Christmas gift wrap relay. Set up assembly lines of gifts, boxes, scissors, wrapping paper, ribbon, and tape for each team. Either have each player wrap one gift or make an assembly line of workers. Then race to wrap! 3. Word Find. Using Christmas words—Christmas, Poinsettia, Candy cane, etc.—have each person make as many smaller words from it as possible before the timer runs out. 4. Christmas Carol Charades. Get dramatic! You can’t beat this crowd pleaser, as it is sure to bring the laughs. 5. Photo booth. Provide silly props and backdrops for guests to use to get silly in front of a photographer (keep in mind it doesn’t have to be a professional). 6. Two truths and a lie. This is a great ice breaker! Each person tells two stories about themselves, two of which are true and one that is not. A great Christmas twist is to name their three worst Christmas gifts; two would be true and one would be false. 7. Snowman building contest. Judge on speed or originality.

13. Ornament guess. Have guests guess the total number of ornaments on the tree as they come into the party. The closest guess wins. 14. Christmas stocking guessing game. Fill a large stocking with items around the house and let the kids guess what items are in the stocking. 15. Christmas memory game. Put Christmas items on a tray and give people one minute to memorize the items. Take the tray away and have them write as many down as they can remember in 30 seconds. source: www.signupgenius.com
