Students Turn to Internet to Build Online Presence, Showcase Work GVM GVM

LIFE

For Grace Bodey, a senior at Buena Vista University in Iowa, maintaining an Internet presence is important for her potential career path. The aspiring graphic designer has created personal profiles on websites such as WordPress,Behance and LinkedIn to easily share her work with potential employers and the public. “Maintaining a digital portfolio ... allows me to establish myself as a young media guru, and it paves the way for professional connections and critiques in the future,” Bodey says. Today, students are facing a different kind of job market than they did in the past. Employers are not only tracing our digital footprints but also viewing portfolios and résumés online and learning about us with the click of a link. Websites such asabout. me, WordPress, Wix.com and Vizify, among several others, have surfaced as ways for students to showcase their skills. “I think the traditional résumé is really on

the cusp of disappearing completely,” says Dawn Rasmussen, the president and chief résumé designer for Pathfinder Writing and Career Services. To build your own “personal brand” on the Internet, it’s important to determine what makes you unique, Rasmussen says. College students’ own brands could focus on their creativity, for example, or their technological skills. “You grew up in an era where you always had a computer in your hand,” Rasmussen says. “Understanding the emerging technological stuff is great for business.” And, Rasmussen says, building a digital presence can benefit not just student writers and artists but those entering essentially any field. Yet, it’s just as important to remember that many employers are also looking up job applicants on social media sites and Google.

So, Rasmussen says, you have to find out what’s published about you on the Internet first.

Google Yourself

As the popularity of social media rises in the digital age, we have less and less privacy -- which could potentially be dangerous for students applying for jobs if they don’t check what information is floating around in cyberspace first. “Everything you do is adding up to a complete picture,” Rasmussen says. In an article published on Forbes.com, Rosemary Haefner, the vice president of human resources at CareerBuilder, says that because social media is a key element of modern communication, and “because much of that communication is public, it’s no surprise some recruiters and hiring man-

LIFE

agers are tuning in.” Rasmussen says that if you’re applying for a job, you should Google yourself first. From there, you can see what information is immediately available to potential employers and what comes up in general when your name is searched. There are also ways to determine what Rasmussen described as your “social reputation,” which some websites -- or social reputation management tools -- likesocialmention.com and klout. com, determine by producing a composite score from the positive, negative and neutral information that’s available when you type your name into a search engine.

The Rise of the Digital Portfolio

When it comes to creating a portfolio online, Rasmussen says it’s important to focus on your specific job target. If you’re pursuing a job in one field, try and tie in skills from other experiences that you might have developed, too. Some sites like WordPress and about.me have pre-formatted layouts and allow you to simply fill in your information; others like wix.com offer more design freedom. In a New York Times article, journalist Eilene Zimmerman notes that “creating your own website or displaying your work on a larger platform gives you some control over what is found.” In the article, Scott Belsky, the chief executive of Behance, which allows users to showcase creative work, says employers want to view more than just your credentials. “They are also looking for that person’s process, how they do their work, who they collaborate with, how they test ideas,” Belsky told the Times. According to Zimmerman’s article, online portfolios typically include an “About Me” page as well as work samples and a résumé. (The Louisiana State University websiteoffers some examples of online portfolios across multiple fields -- from nutritional sciences to architecture.) Rasmussen says that when creating an online portfolio, you should provide a “reason for someone to want to hire you” and focus on what distinguishes you from the rest. “Employers are taking the approach of, ‘what’s in it for me?’” she says.

Maintaining a Presence

Experts like Rasmussen say it’s important to update your site regularly because you never know who might be searching for a potential employee at a given time. A different Times article published earlier this year says that some employers are searching for candidates online without even posting job listings first. And, many experts and career centers say that maintaining a blog through sites such as WordPress can benefit a student as well, as they provide an opportunity to showcase your interests and writing skills. Meanwhile, at schools like Pennsylvania State University, career centers offer resources for students to build their online presence. LinkedIn has also become a popular social media site, with about 225 million users on an international level. Bodey says that in general, maintaining an online presence makes her work more easily accessible. “I can shoot a link to anyone in three seconds, and they’ve got my body of work at their fingertips,” Bodey says.

The interior includes several premium factory features such as a touchscreen radio, the interlagos plaid heated seats, and white LED interior lighting. Several subtle interior mods include the newsouth boost gauge mounted in the driver side vent, an aftermarket heavy weight shift knob, an oem+ USB charging port. The air ride controller is custom mounted in a Euro cubby holder under the dash, along with the digital psi gauge mounted under the radio. The tank, compressor, valves, and lines are all mounted in the trunk around the spare tire under my custom made false floor that hides all of the components and keeps the trunk space usable.

I am not quite finished with the car yet as I have a CTS Ko4 Turbo kit upgrade sitting in my garage waiting to be installed. This turbo is slightly larger than the Ko3 turbo the car is equipped with from factory, and it will bring the car well above 300whp & 350wtq with a Stage 2+ tune. A stage 2 clutch and lightweight flywheel will be installed to handle the extra power. I will also be changing up the wheels at some point this year and hopefully adding aftermarket sway bars and unibraces to help the handling on curvy roads. Future mods may include widened fenders with aggressive track wheels, a custom vinyl wrap, an even bigger turbo, aftermarket seats, and a roll cage.

Sex, Drugs, and Snapchat “ECU Nation takes Campus by Storm” BY TRAVIS JONES Every now and then there is the one craze that takes a college campus. First it was Yak-Yak and now it is an anonymous Snapchat story entitled ECU Nation. ECU is just one of the many colleges that now have an account that showcases sex, drugs, and alcohol use. Whether it be an armlong blunt or an Adderall on the table, ECU Nation has students hooked.

alive, the owners of the ECU Nation account have now come up with a more creative take on how to keep their service alive: the social media app Yeti. Yeti allows users to upload pictures and videos similar to the way that one would on Snapchat and is already taking off with NC State and University of South Carolina jumping on the Yeti Bandwagon.

ECU Nation has sparked controversy locally due to it showcasing illegal drug use and is facing termination from Snapchat.

Many students find the account entertaining and hope to see it continue as it allows students to peek into the lives of each other and experience the diversity of students here at ECU. So that everyone can fully enjoy ECU Nation, we should monitor what we submit so that it doesn’t show up on the news or tarnish the reputation of ECU.

Local news outlets have started showcasing the account, making it a hot topic for discussion, as well as bringing the account to the attention of the local authorities. To keep the service

7 Great Valentine’s Day Date Ideas Valentine’s Day marks a day or fresh romance for some and also offers the opportunity for the rekindling of romance for those who’ve been in relationships for some time. With everyone having such busy lives in this day and age, coming up with creative and fresh date ideas is a challenge. There’s no reason why Lifehack can’t offer a “love hack” or two every once in a while, and today is a perfectly appropriate day to do so. Rather than just suggest one or two “love hacks” on Valentine’s DAy, we’re going to serve up 14 of them for you. Plenty of choices for you to pick from so that you and your Valentine can have a great evening – and without having to invest a bunch of time in the planning in the process:

1. Karaoke Night

If you’re feeling brave – and vulnerability isn’t an issue for you – heading out to your local karaoke bar for a night of singing and dancing is not only a unique dating idea, but it’s also a way to relieve tension from the work week. You also get a chance to strut your stuff in front of your date – whether by sohwing off your pipes or bringing the camp to the forefront with every song you perform.

2. Movie Matinée

Going out to the movies isn’t exactly a novel idea, but what if you and your sweethear were to skip work and hit the theatre for a matinée? The movie will be less crowded, and you’ll feel as if you’re ahead of the game when it comes to Valentine’s Day plans.

3. Tea Night

Tea houses are gaining in popularity all over the world, so why not spend some time in one with your date in one? You can experiment with teas you’ve never had the chance to try before, and you won’t have to keep the drinking in check – as opposed to hitting the bar where you run the risk of drinking more than your fair share and not feeling “up” for work the next day.

4. An Evening Picnic

The weather may not cooperate with everyone on this one, but if doesn’t mean it can’t be done. You can simply have it indoors under candlelight or spend it outdoors if the climate isn’t too cool. Regardless of where you have the picnic, it’s a classic date idea that can go over well no matter what you serve and when you serve it.

5. A Night at the Bookstore

While there aren’t as many around as there used to be, there’s nothing quite like exploring a bookstore with your date. You can

GVM | 9

discover new books that might appeal to you and you may discover what books your date enjoys as well.

6. Skating

Another great bonding experience is hitting the rink with your date, whether it be the ice rink or roller rink. Even if you can’t skate very well, you’ll find that your date might be impressed with your willingness to go out and do something that you may not be all that great at.

7. A Bed & Breakfast Excursion

This date idea is for those who are in a relationship where spending a night away from home could add some sprak into things. It’s like taking a mini-vacation without having to stray too far, allowing for a quick getaway and return to work the next day. BY MIKE VARDY From: Lifehack.org

Top 5 Music Festivals GVM

SOUND

BY ARRAN WRIGHT

January to me used to represent starting a new year, a new semester, cold winter, and longing for something to do other than attempting to keep New Year’s resolutions. Then I went to my first music festival. Now the beginning of the year is filled with anticipation of festival lineup time, a chance to fully take advantage of my summer vacation, and dreaming of the warm days ahead filled with some of the most amazing music and memories. While there are hundreds of music festivals spanning across the country, I picked a few of my favorites (mostly within driving distance) that I think everyone should experience at least once in their life.

1.- BUKU Music and Arts Project: New Orleans, LA ~ March 13-14 ~ www.thebukuproject.com Featuring: Bassnectar, A$AP Rocky, Passion Pit, Empire of the Sun, Borgore As far as festivals go, this 2-day event in one of the country’s most exciting cities is something everyone can love. A range of music from every genre is highlighted in this all-star lineup. Perfect for that midsemester itch or that Spring Break trip you’ve been planning since freshman year, but have yet to take. 2.- Hangout Music Festival: Gulf Shores, AL ~ May 15-17 ~ www.hangoutmusicfest.com Featuring: Foo Fighters, Skrillex, Paramore, Adventure Club, Phantogram Who doesn’t want to kick off the beginning of summer with a little music on the beach? This stellar list of artists immediately caught my attention as one of the best lineups of the upcoming year. With so many genres of music showcased, wou can expect to be wowed by the first big festival of the season. 3.- Counterpoint Music Festival: Kingston Downs, GA ~ May 21-23 ~ www.counterpointfestival.com Featuring: Zedd, Widespread Panic, The Roots, Umphrey’s McGee, Dillon Francis This is one for the rave kid or hippie in GVM | 11

all of us. Counterpoint is one of those life-changing, reach for the stars, good vibe events that you don’t fully grasp until you experience it for yourself. You might not see your favorite artist or even anyone you know, but the caliber of people who attend this event and the energy surrounding this festival are what makes it so special. If you don’t go to anything else this year, I would suggest checking out Counterpoint. 4.- Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival: Manchester, TN ~ June 11-14 ~ www. bonnaroo.com Featuring: Kendrick Lamar, Alabama Shakes, Deadmau5, Ben Harper, Billy Joel. Everyone has heard of Bonnaroo, but have you actually lived it? Even bypassing the outstanding lineup, Bonnaroo stands on its own as one of the most attended festivals in the country and has built this incredible following. There in not a moment of any day at this festival that isn’t filled with amazing music or legendary Bonnaroo staples (like a BIG ASS WATERSLIDE!). 5.-Electric Forest: Rothbury, MI ~ June 25-28 ~ www.electricforestfestival.com Featuring: The Glitch Mob, Matt & Kim, Cash Cash, Seven Lions, Ms. Lauryn Hill The hills are alive with sound of music… literally. Set up in the woods in the middle of nowhere, Electric Forest takes camping and festivals to a whole new level with lights and music shooting through the night and setting the forest on fire…. not literally. The elaborate stages, the people, the tree hammocks (a personal favorite), Electric Forest does festivals right. It may be a bit of a drive to get there, but this breath-taking and life-changing event is worth it, and an absolutely perfect way to cap off an eventful summer. If you have never been to a festival before, you have no idea what you are denying yourself. Any of these events would be excellent for a first timer. Make sure you check one out and make sure summer one worth remembering.

I work in the HIV field and I have for a while 14 going on 15 years to be exact. The thing is there is no change in sexual and drug usage behavior. Many people know they can live with the disease

GVM | 13

Some people have personal reasons as to why they support a cause and others jump on the bandwagon to say they did this and they did that. But as a child who grew up with a mother who survived cancer, and a person who works in the HIV field, I must say that we as not only citizens of Greenville, but the United States, need to start

loving ourselves to the point where we take care of our health before anything else. This means learning everything we can about the diseases and infections that can change our lives. Would you sign a document for support without first reading it? The same for supporting a cause that you know little about. Take a few minutes of a day to do a little research and I’m sure it will change your life. I know I make it my duty to help prevent people in Greenville and Pitt County from becoming new HIV + members of the community. For those living with this disease and not taking care of yourself, don’t make your situation that much worst. Get into care and stay there. You have only one you and if you cut your life short, no one will know they types of things you could have done. For our county to be ranked among the top ten with new HIV cases is disheartening. So as the saying in HIV says “Know your Status,” Know your status about every health disparity that man can get.

A. Maceo Smith New Tech High School Uptown Funk Dance

This is a great example of how a bunch of technologly students let go of their fears, trusted their teacher and got down to Uptown Funk!!!

“Really good choreography and they did a wonderful job executing it however I will never ever look at this song the same again, haha I don’t know how I feel about that.“ - Christina L.

“It’s not too bad for a small-scale production. It would have been a lot better if there would have been less people learning a better dance. And the teacher hip thrusting is a little concerning. “

“Only thing stranger than this would be watching an episode of Glee. Where are the rest of the teachers? Lol.” - Trey S.

“It’s cute and creative, but it could use a lot more energy. The poor students just have that I-don’t-want-tobe-here face. I wanted to stop watching it a quarter of the way through.” - Dana B.

- Betsy W.

“Oh yeaaaah! I like it how the white guy is getting his funk on with the ladies! Soon as you hear the first intro to the song you knows it’s gonna to be a funky funk time baby!”

I thought it was a well thought out spin on what was already a fun song to dance to! Now that people have started to put their own dance moves with the song, it makes it a fun song to play at clubs and bars.

New Parking Deck Opens In Uptown Greenville

GVM GVM

LIFE

BY TRAVIS JONES

Every student at ECU knows the constant struggle of finding a parking spot in the uptown area. We all believe that the parking patrol has a personal vendetta against us and that they are always searching for our car, to give us a ticket or tow us. Luckily there is an answer to the problem: the new parking deck that opened to the public on January 30th. This new parking deck, centrally located in uptown Greenville, will bring 238 new parking spots, however some will be leased and others will remain short term paid, and metered spaces. The first two floors of the deck are open to the public from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. and are two-hour spots that will eventually be converted into metered spots. The new parking deck will allow

more parking for students and Greenville citizens to take advantage of when they are paying a visit to their favorite restaurant or shop, or even going out for a night on the town! While the first two floors are public the third and fourth floors will be leased for $46 a month or $138 per quarter. If you are interested in leasing a spot, you will have to

apply through the city of Greenville. Currently the southern row of parking on the first floor is restricted due to crews still preparing the grounds surrounding the deck and the official grand opening of the parking deck is planned for March 14th.

WINTER GVM GVM

LIFE

ADVENTURES BY BAREFOOT WADE

Every year I take an extended winter adventure. I use to always go south to the Florida Keys but I decided to switch things up a bit in recent years and do the last thing anyone expects a barefoot, beach bum, southerner to do....go north for the month of January. It dawned on me a few years back that I had pretty much done everything that Florida has to offer. And though this makes me a lucky man, I needed to experience something new. Obviously my heart remains in the south but I realized that there was much in the north that I haven’t done. So after my show at Christy’s Europub, I packed my bags and headed north. I had a couple shows in Virginia and a couple in West Virginia. I made sure to space them out so I had plenty of week day free time for my adventures. I first stopped up in Fort Washington, Maryland to spend a few days. Since that is just above D.C. it gives me the chance to go visit the big city and do things of that nature. I had a friend up that way who also grew up in Jacksonville. Since I was in the area, we naturally met up for some drinks. While chatting with our waitress we were surprised to discover that she used to live

in Jacksonville as well....small world! After doing a show in Alexandria, I headed over to West Virginia for a week and a half. Believe it or not, there are quite a few people up that way that work in the Outer Banks each summer so I was instantly surrounded by people that I’ve been hanging out on the beach with for years. I had two shows up that way and they were a blast! In between my music gigs I managed to do a radio interview, visit the old commanding offices of George Washington and Stonewall Jackson (oddly enough they’re are basically on the same street). And I drove up to Pennsylvania to visit Gettysburg for the first time (Obviously I’m kind of a history nut). I also got to hang out with some real cool old school hippies and taste some of that West Virginia moonshine. I also got to visit and play in Roanoke, Virginia which is a town I highly recomend

spending some time in. If Greenville and Asheville got together and made a baby... it would be named Roanoke. I also bought two ultra-groovy Grateful Dead belts and a Yellow Submarine coffee mug while I was there. After all of that I have a weekend off and then I’ll be headed to Raleigh where I’m opening up for Zach Deputy at the Pour House on Thursday, Feb 5. After words I’m heading back south to play in South Carolina, Georgia and make a quick trip to Florida. P.S. For those guys and girls that are freaking out because Valentines day is on the way and you’re still single...worry not. Just go to the bar that night around 11pm and I assure you things will work out to your favor.

THE SOUND

Virginia Beach musician Brian Grilli has been making his presence known nationally over the past year and in 2014 took Nashville by storm. Grilli, a retired Navy EOD Technician, has not only done numerous tours overseas for the Navy, but in 2014 racked up nearly 200 shows, spreading his music nationwide. His music has placed him in front of hundreds of thousands of fans and caught the eye of many radio programmers and industry professionals. Along with performing with acts such as Florida Georgia Line and The Eli Young Band, Grilli recently performed a private VIP function on Music Row in Nashville for twenty-five of the top country radio programmers in the business. He was also invited to perform at NAMM (National Association of Music Merchants) in Nashville to a nearly sold out crowd. Grilli has also been named a Heart Songs for Veterans Ambassador - an organization dedicated to assisting Veterans and their families. As Ambassador, Grilli donates proceeds from the title song he wrote and recorded specifically for the documentary, “Until it Hurts”. These performances obviously had an impact as his first released single, “Damn Good Day”, made an impressive showing on many charts and landing him a number one position in November, 2014. The international video

music channel ZUUS TV also voted him a “Country Hunk” for the video “Damn Good Day.”

All these accolades are definitely something Grilli doesn’t take lightly - but when the big announcement came that his single, “Damn Good Day”, was a final cut nominee for “Single of the Year” for the international reporting charts New Music Weekly,( in the company of Blake Shelton, Kenney Chesney, Chase Rice and others), the Grilli camp was blown away. “I am so honored to even be mentioned in the same company as these major artists, let alone accept a final cut nomination in the Top 5 finalists! Thank you”, says Grilli. Grilli has since released his second single and video, “Crazy” internationally and hopes to keep the momentum moving forward.
