SPRING BREAK
AT BUKU
BY ARRAN WRIGHT
Embedded in the heart of one the most historic cities in the country, BUKU Music and Arts Project is about to kick off festival season with a bang on March 11 and 12. At Mardi Gras World in New Orleans, with the breeze of the Mississippi and the view of the Crescent City Connection Bridge, BUKU will throw down an unforgettable experience that can’t be missed. BUKU has five unique and breathtaking stages hosting some of today’s most incredible acts including Pretty Lights, Kid Cudi, Chvrches, Future, Above & Beyond, Griz, Crystal Castles, A$AP Ferg, and many more. Even without the amazing lineup, BUKU uses the spirit of the city to make the festival grounds come alive. With pop up performances like local marching bands in the BUKULTURE Tent, fire breathers, stilt walkers, break dancers, and a live graffiti gallery, BUKU clashes the industrial feel of the grounds with the major music and art community of New Orleans. BUKU gives off a big family house party vibe where everyone is invited and welcome.
Tickets are still available to make your Spring Break 2016 the memory of a lifetime. Go to www.thebukuproject.com for ticketing information and specially priced travel packages.

LIFE
Valentine’s Day and Being Single Don’t let having or not having a relationship define you BY RANDY MOORE
Perhaps your love life hasn’t exactly worked out the way you planned. Maybe you went through a rough marriage, had a number of challenging relationships with precisely the wrong partners, or situations in your love life make you think there isn’t a match for you. With Valentine’s Day coming up, it makes things feel even worse. Not only do you have your own feelings to contend with, but then you peruse Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter, and all you see are endless photos and posts of, “He got me roses! I love you, Baby!” or “She got tickets! Yes!” All this does is cause you to reflect on a simple fact: You’re not in a relationship right now and love sucks. I understand. Really, I get it. But, please consider this: A relationship does not define you. It can complement you, but it doesn’t define you. Maybe today it feels like all relationships are crap. I hear you. Being around others who are in the midst of enjoying someone else conjures that. So, if you feel that way—do it. Feel the anger and bitterness that stems from a past relationship gone wrong.
But while you’re doing it, please recognize a few of things:
1.- Valentine’s Day is just a day on the calendar. While it’s rooted in history and legend, it’s still just a day. 2.- Give yourself a time limit for your feelings. It’s okay to feel pissed off, but don’t harbor those feelings for long periods of
GVM | 7
time. A closed heart not only breeds anger and resentment, it can never receive love. 3.- Recognize that not all relationships are the same. Although it may feel like all men/women are the same, they aren’t. There are great men and women out there. Just because you don’t have a date today doesn’t mean that you will be loveless forever. Try to keep things in perspective. Above all, please know this: broken hearts heal, but they don’t heal through anger; they heal through recognition. They don’t heal through regret; they heal through reflection. They don’t heal through feelings of failure; they heal through acceptance. And, moving on is not about blame; it’s about surrender. Don’t spend your time regretting your past relationships, even if they were bad or challenging. Everything you’ve experienced is a prologue to this moment, and here you are ... still standing. Every situation in our lives makes us bitter or better, and you can choose which at any time. Whatever has happened, you can’t change it, you can’t undo it, and you can’t forget it. Instead, embrace it and move on. Bottom line: You win some, you learn some. Great love is out there, but it might not appear until you let go of your past. Anything else is allowing your past to control you, and there is no use in looking back unless you plan on going that way. Valentine’s Day or not, it will be a beautiful day if you so choose.

MUSIC
VH1 MUSIC REVIEW BY ARRAN WRIGHT At LaPlace Elementary School in Louisiana, walking through the halls meant hearing the sounds of children laughing, lessons being taught, and the hustle and bustle of the students in between classes. Yet, never was there the bright sound of instruments gracing the halls that these students walked through everyday. That is, until LaPlace Elementary was recently rewarded a grant of $30,000 by VH1 Save the Music and Toyota. On the opening day of Voodoo Festival Music + Arts Experience Friday, October 30th, corporate leaders from both Toyota and VH1 Save the Music met with administrative staff of LaPlace Elementary School and the Louisiana School Board Association to unveil their gift, and give a few words on why music is so important to young students. On behalf of VH1, Chiho Feindler, Grantee and Compliance Manager of VH1, stated, “We really believe having music education is crucial in everyday school life… The complete education should have music education.” Kathy Mota, Toyota’s representative as Senior Strategist for Social Impact and Innovation and Corporate Philanthropy, spoke of their excitement to team up with VH1. On behalf of their partnership, Kathy stated “ I’m really lucky to work for a company that believes in giving back to people around the country and around the world to make their lives better.”

Through a nationwide festival outreach program, Toyota and VH1 teamed up to bring musical instruments to one lucky school through a unique and exciting method of giving. Teaming up with festivals like Lollapalooza, Nocturnal Wonderland, Outside Lands, Life is Beautiful, and Voodoo Music + Arts Experience in New Orleans, they put a full size Whispering Willow tree on each of the festival grounds that allowed festival goers to express their love for music. They shared by taking a leaf and writing what music means to them on the leaf, hanging the leaf on the tree, and posting a photo of it on social media with the hashtag #ToyotaGiving. For every post tagged, Toyota donated $1 to VH1 Save the Music Program. For the unveiling of the award, they allowed a few band students from each section to come on stage to show the crowd what each type of instrument can do. Music teacher Jeremy Rodrigue was all smiles, as he conducted each of the sections and their fresh instruments through a small piece of music. As music teacher of LaPlace Elementary, he had been teaching students the power of music long before they had instruments. By using tapping, tones, and rhythm he taught the students music theory without a single instrument.

MUSIC
To add to the excitement, VH1 Music contacted world-renowned artist Santigold to surprise the students with a small private performance. Santigold was ecstatic to perform for the students ,and it showed when she invited a few of the students to dance on stage with her (picture 1). When the students stepped onto the stage, electricity in the room was apparent. All of the students danced in perfect coordination together, and even some faculty members began joining in on the once in a lifetime experience. Post performance, the students got the opportunity to ask Santigold questions on how music shaped who she is, and she didn’t fail to disappoint. Upon being asked by a student “Why did you start writing music?” she revealed that she had been writing music for as long as she could remember, but that two of her major influences to begin making music was the 1984 film, “ Breakin’ “ and the famous hip hop trio, Salt-N-Pepa. Closing the event, a check for $30,000 was presented to VH1 Save The Music and LaPlace Elementary School from Toyota, with clapping and shouting from the audience. (Picture 2) Alison Cupit, the Principal of LaPlace Elementary, closed the event and addressed the students with some words of wisdom. After thanking the teachers for all of their contributions in the classroom, she stated in unison with all of the students present, “It takes all of us to achieve greatness.”

LIFE
THE LEGEND OF SAINT VALENTINE The history of Valentine’s Day–and the story of its patron saint–is shrouded in mystery. We do know that February has long been celebrated as a month of romance, and that St. Valentine’s Day, as we know it today, contains vestiges of both Christian and ancient Roman tradition. But who was Saint Valentine, and how did he become associated with this ancient rite? The Catholic Church recognizes at least three different saints named Valentine or Valentinus, all of whom were martyred. One legend contends that Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. When Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, he outlawed marriage for young men. Valentine, realizing the injustice of the decree, defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. When Valentine’s actions were discovered, Claudius

ordered that he be put to death. Other stories suggest that Valentine may have been killed for attempting to help Christians escape harsh Roman prisons, where they were often beaten and tortured. According to one legend, an imprisoned Valentine actually sent the first “valentine” greeting himself after he fell in love with a young girl–possibly his jailor’s daughter–who visited him during his confinement. Before his death, it is alleged that he wrote her a letter signed “From your Valentine,” an expression that is still in use today. Although the truth behind the Valentine legends is murky, the stories all emphasize his appeal as a sympathetic, heroic and–most importantly–romantic figure. By the Middle Ages, perhaps thanks to this reputation, Valentine would become one of the most popular saints in England and France.

Duece Blount: Sunday Morning > Saturday Night BYSHAKYLABETTON Duece Blount is a Greenville native who graduated with a degree in business and marketing from North Carolina Central University. Duece’s new book “Sunday Morning > Saturday Night” is his first published book of his writing career. “Sunday Morning > Saturday Night” first started out as a play. Duece then realized he wanted it to be a published product. He says writing is his escape and a form of therapy for him. His inspiration for this book was to showcase various aspects of his life which include some of his experiences with throwing parties and his relationships with women. “Sunday Morning > Saturday Night” is about a young man who is looking for himself in all the wrong places, and his path to evolve into a better person. He wanted to tell his memories through this book, and show how you can make something out of nothing. Duece describes his book as an easy read and is widely accessible to a variety of people. Whether you are a teenager, senior citizen, doctor, or only have a high school diploma he said everyone will able to relate to one of the characters. The main message, Duece said, he is trying to convey through his book is that “You are not just a series of your mistakes. That it’s about finding a solution and sharing your passion with the world. Simply finding yourself”. When Duece is not writing he enjoys being a mentor and basketball coach at Wellcome Middle School. On top of being an author, Duece is an all-around entrepreneur with his own cologne brand titled “Greater”, a clothing designer, motivational speaker, and an event host. Something that Duece says he is passionate about is inspiring other people and motivating them to reach their dreams. His goal for the future is to “Take over my world and be a natural born leader”. He plans to publish many more books and inspire others while doing so. You can purchase his book Sunday Morning > Saturday Night at www. dueceblount.com through direct order and on Amazon. com. VALENTINE’S GIFT IDEAS GIFT IDEAS FOR YOUR CUTIE’S SIGN BYBRITTANYTAYLOR Tired of buying assorted chocolates with mystery filling and super plush teddy bears that are too big for your car? Here are a few pointers to help guide you in the right direction to finding the perfect gift for your sweetheart this Valentine’s Day!
LEO (JULY 23-AUGUST 22)
ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19)
• Leo guys have a creative sense of fashion when compared to other signs. They like to be different. FashionBeans writer Cillian O’Connor reported to keep a look out for white gold watch fashion trends. Help your sweetie be ahead of the game and set him up with one!
• Aries guys are intelligent and would be content with the newest electronic gadgets, since they have to stay up to date. If your guy is more athletic, tickets to an upcoming sporting event is a great way to surprise your energetic sweetie!
• Leo girls like to enjoy the finer things in life. Take her to a play or out to a trendy restaurant with live music, like Winslow’s downtown. Extra credit if you surprise her with a personalized piece of jewelry.
• Aries girls are always looking for new skills to master, so if your partner is interested in cooking, surprise her with a cookbook full of weird dishes. If she’s into the fitness craze, Strong Looks Better Naked by Khloé Kardashian will be the perfect incentive to keep her motivated!
TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) • Taurus guys are deeper than your average dude. Burn him a CD with all his favorite songs, or songs that make you think of him! He’d appreciate the time and effort you put into his gift. • Taurus girls like to stay comfortable! A cozy scarf would win this kind of girls heart. Indulging in her favorite food would also be a great way to show her you care about her, so whip up her favorite dessert and a homemade card.
GEMINI (MAY 21- JUNE 20) • Gemini guys are into anything that allows them to use their brain. Get him that new video game he’s been asking for or a cheat guidebook to his favorite game. If you don’t want your guy spending all his time on his Xbox, he’d appreciate a GoPro to capture his adventures. • Gemini girls would be just fine with receiving a gift card to their favorite store, but if you really want to impress her take her on a weekend getaway! Travel somewhere you two have never been and take pictures for her to add to her collection.
CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22) • Cancer guys are caring and are more of a homebody. A home cooked meal of his favorite comfort foods would be perfect for him! He would appreciate your affectionate gesture and enjoy spending some quality time with his girl. • Cancer girls would love to spend time getting a mani-pedi or you could tug at her heartstrings by painting her a handmade canvas. Cancers like to decorate, so a picture of you two in a frame that matches her décor is a perfect gift!
GVM | 17
VIRGO (AUGUST 23-SEPTEMBER 22) • Virgo guys are fans of innovative gifts. If your guy is technologically savvy, hook him up with a wireless charging mat for his iPhone. If he’s more traditional, a personalized leather wallet is guaranteed to please him. • Virgo girls like gifts that reflect their unique personality. Customize a yearly planner or journal with her initials and pick a background that you feel distinguishes your valentine from the rest. If she’s an avid shopper, but you’re afraid you may not know exactly what she likes, accompany her on her next outing. Take note of what she points out so you can snag it later!
LIBRA (SEPTEMBER 23-OCTOBER 22) • Libra guys may be on the quiet side, but they enjoy being around people. They’re also music admirers. Tickets to their favorite band is a great way to show you care about what they like, and a concert is the type of environment they can openly be themselves. • Libra girls need to know that their efforts don’t go unnoticed, but there’s no need to go overboard. Simple thank you cards and memorabilia of you two, or her closest friends will melt her heart! Websites like Shutterfly and Esty offer unique ways to customize magnets, candles, pillows and more!
SCORPIO (OCTOBER 23- NOVEMBER 21) • Scorpio guys like anything suspenseful, so impress him by planning a covert Valentines date. Don’t tell him where you two are going, or what you two will be doing. Scorpios like surprises so don’t give him any hints! He’ll probably catch on if you are taking him to his favorite restaurant or to see a movie he’s been dying to see. • Scorpio girls are probably the most straightforward of all the signs. If she hasn’t already told you what she wants, you might want her to go with you to pick out her present. If you still want to surprise her, here’s a helpful hint: Scorpios have an obsession

MOVIES
with clothing. Look in her closet and get a feel for what colors and styles she likes and if you’re still lost, a gift card to her favorite store is the best choice.
SAGITTARIUS (NOVEMBER 22- DECEMBER 21) • Sagittarius guys would get a kick out of going to a comedy club. They would also enjoy doing something active like going on a hike, or exploring a city they’ve never been. You could even plan a group sport with mutual friends like bowling or Frisbee golf.
AQUARIUS (JANUARY 20- FEBRUARY 18) • Aquarius guys like to own bizarre items. Drones are the coolest toy a guy can own right now and prices range from affordable to insane, so there’s one for any budget! If he already has one, add to his collection of vinyl records, Star Wars action figures or comic books. He’ll love that you bought a gift specific to his interests.
• Sagittarius girls like to be occupied, and enjoy odd places and things. Plan an all-day event of scavenging through thrift stores and see who can find the coolest, or most humorous artifact. Don’t forget to buy the winning artifact for her to have as a keepsake!
• Aquarius girls are unique but like to be trendy. Slip dresses and graphic purses have been big on Spring 2016 Runway’s, so check them out to get a good idea of what your valentine would like. If you aren’t into buying clothing as a gift, a vintage phone case and a night of karaoke, complete with Youtube lyric videos and a hairbrush microphone, is perfect for her.
CAPRICORN (DECEMBER 22- JANUARY 19)
PISCES (FEBRUARY 19-MARCH 20)
• Capricorn guys aren’t hard to please. Cooking him a nice dinner will go a long way, but if you want to wrap a gift for him don’t be spontaneous. Get him something he would buy for himself because he doesn’t like when items go to waste. • Capricorn girls don’t need expensive gifts, but if you’re going to buy them jewelry it should be the real thing and never buy them anything gaudy. Capricorns also appreciate small acts of kindness. Send a bouquet of her favorite flowers to work with a sweet note telling her how much you appreciate her.
• Pisces are creative and romantic. Handmade items are always a good idea, as is a candlelight dinner! Pisces guys like to make things. If your guy is a painter, sculptor, writer or musician give him supplies that pair with his talent. Pisces guys will also enjoy things soft to the touch like a plush blanket or super comfortable t-shirts. • Pisces girls need to be pampered! Giving her flowers and fancy chocolates will make her smile, but she’d rather have bath beads and perfumes. If you really want to make her feel extra special, send her for a manicure or pedicure before you take her out to dinner.

LIFE
How much do you love yourself? BY BRIAN GOINGS Over the past six years, I’ve been working with a non-profit agency called PiCASO. It stands for the Pitt County Aids Service Organization. It is one of the smaller organizations that has done so much work for the community and if you have never heard of us...well it’s time you check us out. The reason I’m writing about PiCASO is that I’ve had a chance to really look at the numbers of the spread of HIV and Aids right here in Pitt County and there is a steady increase. We rose from the top 10 counties in North Carolina to the top seven. From my personal knowledge of how HIV and many STD’s are spread right here in our own area is due to the lack of loving themselves. How? Glad you ask. When you don’t love yourself you subject yourselves to things you don’t like to do but do them for the attention..be it good or bad. People binge drink or use drugs and when you are not coherent, you tend to do things that you may regret or not remember that you did. When you love yourself, you don’t subject yourself to abusive relationships that eventually take it’s toll on you and kill your spirit to the point where you will do anything to fill in the void. I can speak on this issue because a very long time ago, I didn’t love myself and I did a few regrettable things, I am so thankful that I started loving on me for me when I did. I would most likely be six feet under now but I am not. So now I want to share that same tip to you who is reading this article and realize that you are not loving yourself like you should. Tell yourself every day that you love yourself until you actually start to believe it. Leave inspiration notes for yourself so that when you see them, you remind yourself that you are the only you that you have and that you must not let your happiness be determined by the actions of others. If you are living with HIV, it does not matter how you became positive, don’t let it control you, you control it. You will love again, but it will manifest itself when you love yourself fully. Some people figure that since they are already positive, what worse could happen to them and have unprotected sex with other positive and sometimes negative people. Well that’s not how it works, you are killing yourself faster because disease on top of disease is literally breaking down your bodies and if you do not stay into care, you are letting whoever infect you have control over your life. Not to mention you may be exposing someone else to the disease that made you pull yourself out of depression to accept. Love you and take control over your life. In conclusion, please, for me, start loving yourself and stop trying to find it in other people, drugs, and binge drinking. It only leads to more heart break and maybe even a very expensive disease. SOUND
AARON CARTER HITS G-VEGAS BY SHAKYLA BETTON
I am Shakyla Betton, the new communications intern here at G-Vegas Magazine. I was offered the opportunity, by my advisor Kevin Howard, to attend the Aaron Carter concert at Tavern on 4th Sunday, January 23rd. Attending this concert and not knowing much about Aaron Carter, nor ever having visited Tavern on 4th, I went into it super excited and prepared for anything given the fact that the event sold out of pre-sale tickets. Starting off with the opening act performances by Xan Callihan ft. Nel$on & Alto Britz, I was pleased with the talent and love for music these artists showcased. They gave off an energy that the crowd adored instantly. With their catchy lyrics and upbeat tracks they had me nodding my head and singing along a few times. Watching this performance gave me an even greater appreciation for rising indie talent simply because the energy they gave off showed their passion for what they do. On to the next opening act, Stitchy C, who definitely set a different mood for the audience. Although he was not a crowd favorite, he is one of those artists you won’t forget about. With his raunchy lyrics and careless demeanor he surely
GVM | 21
left an impact on the audience and myself. While people were shocked or confused about his performance and lyrics this could be a huge part of what he is about. Maybe he uses his possibly offensive lyrics as a way to make the listeners remember him, and he did a great job at doing that. You do you, Stitchy C. You definitely seem like one to stick to your craft. Finally, what we all have been waiting for Aaron Carter hits the stage and the iPhones immediately went into the air. He came out with confidence and the energy from the crowd was amazing. From the first song to the last one he performed he was great and the audience was digging it. Yo Diggity! Once he performed “I Want Candy”, it hit me on who Aaron Carter was and the energy from the audience went through the roof. It was a packed house and I’m sure Aaron was pleased with the bra that was tossed on stage as well. With him performing his new music it got a good reaction, and I can see it blending in with today’s pop culture. With that being said, is the pop icon that all the 90’s babies adored so much making his comeback?

NYE with
BRILLZ
and Cult Entertainment BY CHRISTINA RENDANO The moment I found out BRILLZ was ringing in the New Year at Ritz Raleigh I was all in. I asked my friend, Justin Meyer, if he had ever seen BRILLZ and he replied, “uhhh yeah, he’s AWESOME and puts on a great show!!” He then says, “WHY did you ask? Haven’t you ever seen him before??” My answer was simple, “NOPE, but I will on New Year’s Eve!!!” Justin painted a very colorful picture of BRILLZ; “He has this swagger other DJs just don’t, he brings that gangster rap style to the electronic world with his trap music. He’s a crunchy, funky, hip-hop worshiping crunk-god from outer space. He’s got more trap wobble per pound than any other contender in his weight class. He’s the stuff that suburban white kid’s ghetto nightmares are spun from. BRILLZ is the master of nasty. I just know that he’s awesome and puts on a great show. MVP material, for real!” At first, I was going to focus this article on Brillz and the mindblowing shows he performs, but there was so much more to that night than just the DJs: Cult Entertainment and Life Is Art Studios. Cult Entertainment is an electronic music event production, promotion, and execution company based in Durham, NC. They produced Nightmoves and have since partnered with Disco Donnie Presents to bring BRILLZ and many other big names to Raleigh, Charlotte, and many more of the surrounding areas in North Carolina. Joe Bell, CEO at Cult Entertainment, is one of the nicest guys I have met in the music promotion industry. He is
GVM | 23
soft-spoken, pleasant to be around, easy to work with, and above all else, he constantly makes sure everyone is enjoying himself or herself. Being part of one of the biggest New Year’s Eve parties to hit Raleigh, NC, one would think Joe would be a bundle of nerves; that wasn’t the case. He was calmly walking around, chatting amongst friends, and making sure everyone was having a good time. After recently reading an interview, featuring Joe Bell and Cult Entertainment, I recalled something that stood out to me. Joe had said, “usually if you don’t see me hanging out, there is probably a lot of stuff going wrong. If you do see me, then everything is going awesome.” So two thumbs up for the whole event that night! DVUS and ancient/lakes hit the stage together and nearly blew the roof off of the Ritz. A highlight of their set was when Adisa McKenzie, both an artist and a vocalist, joined them on stage and played Hype Man. The crowd went crazy. I remember taking photos off of the second floor balcony and looking down into the sea of people thinking, “WOW, the crowd and the lighting are amazing.” Life Is Art Studios out of Raleigh, NC has one of the best lighting and technical production companies around. Their New Year’s Eve production was beyond amazing. Finally, BRILLZ came on and was ready to bring 2016 in with a bang. There wasn’t a single unhappy person in the entire venue. Everyone was singing and dancing, but most importantly it was an undeniably remarkable experience.
