New Year’s Resolutions...

Forget About Them BY RANDY MOORE New Year’s Eve can be a little bit scary. The prospect of the New Year – a clean slate, a fresh start – is a good thing, sure, but it’s also a daunting one. The starting of a whole new year begs questions most of us aren’t necessarily ready to answer: Have you done everything you wanted to this year? Have you said “I love you” enough and to the right people? Have you become the person you hoped you might be? Are you even close? For many people, the answer is a loud, resounding, “no.” We’re pretty quick to punish ourselves for that answer, too. We’ve probably read one too many of those unbearably unoriginal articles (or heard one too many bitter rants) that condemn Generation-Y for being lazy, so, as a defense mechanism, we’ve overcompensated by expecting too much of ourselves. We’ve also probably spent too much time on Facebook, where every single job or baby or wedding announcement makes us feel more and more incompetent at living our own lives. I’m not sure when or how it happened, but suddenly, we feel like we deserve a slap on the wrist for not having the kind of year we see in the movies. So, understandably, setting goals, creating expectations and making resolutions for what could very well be another tough year can be frightening. Maybe it’s time to cut yourself a break this New Year’s Eve. When you’re raising your glass of champagne at 11:59 and the countdown is ticking away, stop planning. Stop thinking. Stop

GVM | 5

measuring the happiness you’re feeling against the happiness you could feel if you just did one thing differently. Just stop. Don’t look forward. Look back. You’ve made it. You’ve crossed off another twelve months. You might not know it, but you’ve accomplished things. Those things might be noticeably insignificant, like mastering your knowledge of the lyrics of Drake’s latest song or drinking wine for the first time and feeling like a real adult. Those things might be bigger, too. You might have said, “I love you” for the first time and truly meant it. You might have learned to like yourself a little more. These aren’t accomplishments you can post to Instagram for the world to see, but in a way, that makes them more important. You’re allowed to grant yourself one day of freedom from trying to figure out what the hell you’re doing for the next five years. The world might tell you the New Year is all about looking forward, planning and becoming better (whatever that means). But, maybe, it’s about looking back, too. I’d like to consider the possibility that it’s also okay to celebrate your past triumphs, even if they are few and small. It’s okay to feel proud, even if all you are doing is just getting by.

MUSIC

VOODOO FEST BY ARRAN WRIGHT

Under a beautiful sky in the vastness of City Park in New Orleans, LA, the 17th Annual Voodoo Fest kicked off on October 30, 2015. Heading down the long path to the festival grounds, you could feel the heightened anticipation from the eclectic group of people that often attend Voodoo Music and Arts Festival. With its variety of music, carnival rides, legendary southern cuisine, and the spirit of Halloween engulfing the atmosphere, Voodoo is one of the most original and captivating festivals I have had the pleasure to attend.Z Making the way in to the festival grounds on Day 1 was a task, but one that was met with great reward as we entered through the gate just in time to catch the energetic set that Jauz was throwing down on the Le Plur stage. The Le Plur stage featured many of today’s best EDM artists from today, and Jauz proved that he belonged with the greats. His heart-thumping bass had the entire crowd amped up and ready to rage. On a stage not too far in the distance, Gerard Way (lead singer of My Chemical Romance) showed his new solo style and played to the crowd perfectly. He engaged his audience throughout his set and kept his energy up. It was very interesting to see the contrast between his solo music versus his previous tracks with his wellknown band. Following Gerard on the Altar Stage was Metric. I

GVM | 9

must say I had been waiting to see them since the lineup was announced, and I was not disappointed. Metric dawned horse heads for the opening sequence and sent a powerful message of change and acceptance out into the audience before lead singer Emily Haines came out in large black wings that lit up with lights and sparkling glitter. Their set was powerful from beginning to end. They illuminated the night with their incredible light production and the sounds of their hit songs like “Youth Without Youth”, “Help I’m Alive”, and “Sick Muse”. Peeling myself away from the amazing Metric, I left just in time to make it to the front row for the next powerhouse EDM DJ to perform, Alesso. He filled every impactful moment of his performance with stunning visuals, incredible lights, and of course his toe-tapping, adrenaline pumping, electro house megamixes that had the entire crowd belting “We Could Be Heroes” at the top of their lungs. Not to be outdone, the newest duo in the EDM scene followed up Alesso’s brilliance with a party of their own. Jack U graced the stage with one intention in mind: MAKE YOU BOUNCE! The party went on and the energy revved forward. The loudest moment of the entire festival was hearing the amazing people in the crowd sing along to huge radio hit “Where Are You Now” featuring Justin Bieber. Everyone came together to make

MUSIC

that moment feel special. Day 2 was met with a lot of delays. The show went on. The rain and the mud didn’t hinder most of the festival goers, however the crowd was a little more sparse than the day before. The ones who spent the entire day there let the mud almost become a part of them as people began leaving shoes and socks behind. The rain and 5 inch deep mud most certainly didn’t stop the artists from pouring their hearts out on the stage. Despite the mud, I walked around a lot on Day 2 to get the full festival experience. The set up was incredible with four stages, a carnival area, a large Pepsi Inflatable Art Installation, and all the lights and trimmings that make a festival unique and beautiful. There were more vendors at this festival than any other festival I have attended, and each of them braved the weather to bring a vast array of items to sell to the masses. The food was top notch as can only be expected from a festival in New Orleans. Not your typical burgers and hot dogs. Voodoo served up real Creole style soul food that warmed the hearts of the soaking wet festival goers throughout the day. Santigold, a performer we had the pleasure of seeing the day before at a VH1 Save the Music Event, took the stage and killed it once again for the second time in two days. Her passion for music and the arts was inspiring and made me a fan all over again. Lettuce hit the Lambeau Stage next with their incredible funky vibe and their bright energetic sound. They had the crowd dancing and grooving from the beginning of their set to the end. The rain

drizzled throughout their entire set, but everyone danced along to the soul filled beats and I found myself drifting back and forth to that stage just to hear them play. Standing in line for the Ferris Wheel (which was lit up and beautiful), I was able to see and hear the Altar Stage rocking out to the classic sound of Jane’s Addiction followed by the legend himself Ozzy Osbourne. Ozzy took the stage with a few other well-known musicians including Tom Morello from Rage Against the Machine and Slash from Guns N Roses. While it was incredible to hear such rock gods set the stage on fire with their hard-hitting hits, it was Grammy Award Winning Zhu that caught my attention. His chill vibe met with his pulse thumping dance beats had my feet moving in the rain while I watched the anonymous hero of sound draw the crowd in as he closed what ended up being the final night of Voodoo. Day 3 of Voodoo was cancelled, which was definitely a sad day considering we missed such acts as Zac Brown Band, Third Eye Blind, and of course Deadmau5, but Voodoo was unlike any festival I have had the thrill of experiencing. I can’t wait to experience the buzz of Halloween in New Orleans next year. Voodoo proved that even through the muck and the mile they are the next level of music festivals, and have become a staple in the music world for a reason. Be sure to be on the lookout for Voodoo on Halloween next year. It is not one to be missed.

Dream Work in the New Year BY BRIAN GOINGS

Every year we see many themes for the new year. Well they are cute and all but do they really apply to your life? We make new years resolutions that sometimes we keep and sometimes we forget. A dream, we never forget. In all of this, the worst thing you can do is to doubt yourself. In fact it is the very thing that you should try to overcome. Not too many people know that they doubt themselves. They call it procrastination. Truth is, the root of procrastination is fear. People often say the fear of failing or the fear of succeeding but either way it’s the fear that is holding you back. In this new year lets focus on pushing past the fear and going out on a limb. So many people know what they need to do to get to the vision that they see for themselves but put it off to wait for the right moment. Everyday that you wake up should be that moment that you make the decision to make yourself and your life better. Every day you should be doing something that makes you get closer to what you want to do in life. This could be spending 30 minutes to a hour researching or asking people

GVM | 11

questions. The work you put into your dreams determines the amount of time you can say you have actually enjoyed your time working, doing, performing (insert your dream here). Now you may say, “well I do not know where or how to start. What can I do?” Well just like I have always been told growing up. Closed mouths aren’t fed. Ask questions. If you see someone doing what you want to do, ask them for pointers. We live in a society where you can also find many things on the net. If what you want to do has a creative aspect, tap into your creative self and let your work become your business card. From a marketing aspect, learn how to brand yourself and your work will become your calling card. Now a word of advice, you can have a new years resolution but putting past your fear and doing what you have always wanted to do should not be apart of the resolution. It should be apart of the promise that you make to yourself. In this new year be who you want to be by embracing the bravery to make your dreams come true.

THE FORCED AWAKENING: STAR WARS ENDURES BY NATHAN BLACK

Before The Phantom Menace released back in 1999, an overwhelming sense of joy and fervor radiated everywhere. Throughout media and the internet, there was a raging firestorm of anticipation and hype that would not cease. After its release the tone of things seemed to change, while greatly received by most, the aftertaste of Phantom Menace would be scrutinized and retroactively discerned as a major step backward for not only the series, but american cinema overall. The practical special effects that had been a watermark of the original trilogy were then replaced with an abundance of CGI gaudiness. What once appeared with endearing presence and indelible charm was now bedfellows with a lifeless shell of film that was garishly painted to not clash with the colors of advertisements that it would soon be plastered on. But how does one decide that they will capture lightning in a bottle twice? When considering the Star Wars prequels, upon their release, this was what people expected, a continuum of that original energy and superb storytelling that captured the nation, and propelled science fiction out out of the obscure and into the imaginations of the populace. Fans especially were expecting a new classic, and sadly, the most memorable thing about the Phantom Menace might just be the ridiculous failure that is Jar Jar Binks. Imagine the trepidation that would follow from these memories in light of this aforementioned thought. With the looming reminder of Binks, a deadpan Qui-Gon Jinn, a messiah mythos tagged on to Anakin for superfluous reasons, a lifeless Queen Amidala, a destroyed sense of mystique about the force itself, and ruination of subtly amongst a terrible script. It is no wonder Jake Lloyd (young Anakin Skywalker from Phantom Menace) decided to give up acting altogether after the film’s release. Considering this, purchasing tickets for The Force Awakens was a dubious task. Despite this, like most movie goers, tickets were still bought. It was not until the night of the show that the energy crept up and showed what had GVM | 17

been brewing: a new Star Wars movie was about to premiere, excitement. After the moment came and ended, the aftereffect was (surprisingly) not disappointment. The Force Awakens really delivers. It was more stylish and focused then the prequels had been. It had an energy and bit, a refreshing sense of purpose and complexity that the original series had, that was severely lacking from before in the prequels. Not since The Empire Strikes Back had there been a sense of doom over the main characters in a Star Wars film as it is in The Force Awakens. The heroes might lose, and that is a very real thing in this new film that was absent in Menace. The heroes were unsure and the villains were stone and determined in their viciousness, with flashes of humanity coming through in emotionally moving expressions. The new characters are every bit as charming as their seasoned counterparts and didn’t distract or deter from building the energy of this new series. It is a new Star Wars, new in many ways and must be seen as such. The Force Awakens smothers all expectations to what was before and gives the audience a chance to appreciate the movie for what it is and allows the viewer not to be concerned with what it is not. It nods to the past, it lives in that old, familiar world, but it is not being seen from that former vision. Because of this, The Force Awakens will never be able to live up to its seniors. The truth being that it is not a great film, but it is the film that the series needs if Star Wars is going to continue to be a growing story with new installments. It is a new direction and exactly the type of fresh vision that needs to be cultivated if the series intends to endure instead of just being spectacularly effervescent. The comedy of the film feels up to date. The performances are genuine. The special effects are impressive without spilling over into grandiose. Overall there is plenty to love about this film. Without getting too much into spoilery territory, what is wrong with the film can only be summed up by saying, “it’s

GVM

MOVIES

not the original.” The Force Awakens is still trying to live somewhere on that knife of being accessible to everyone and please everything people liked about the original trilogy. A New Hope established most of the main characters with almost effortless need for exposition. The ease by which these characters, C-P30, R2, Luke, Obi-Wan, Leia, Han and Chewie are all brought in and explored with interest comes without leaving the direction of the story or motivations. Each character has a stake in what’s about to happen and a role to play. The Force Awakens has this too but we are left with so many questions that it is almost a daunting task to consider where to begin. From the beginning of Force we are given only just enough to consider where the story has been and where it might go, but as to what has changed over in this universe since Return of the Jedi, there is still little to tell just who these new characters are. The new villains are very menacing and powerful, but Kylo Ren especially is of great interest--but even his presence is dampened in some ways by bouts of childish tantrums that make his black visage slightly less threatening. It is unfair to compare Vader’s mind choking through gritted teeth behind a blank, expressionless mask with Ren’s outbursts that leaves his toys thrashed about the place. Otherwise, Ren appears as a very formidable enemy and a great new figurehead of the dark side. Another reason the new film may lack some je ne sais quoi

is because that charm was borrowed so completely from other sources. Everything from King Arthur, Kurosawa films, to Lord of the Rings, to Buck Rogers, and various other sources, Star Wars was the combined imagination of so many potent sources of inspiration that it is no wonder that its narrative of the hero’s journey speaks to people still to this day. There is some of that here in The Force Awakens but nothing quite as powerful as when Luke tells Obi Wan, “I want to come with you to Alderaan. There’s nothing for me here now. I want to learn the ways of the Force and become a Jedi, like my father.” One must remember when watching Star Wars that it is mostly a children’s story, or at least a young teenager’s story. It is suppose to be digestible to all and speaks to the very heart of our imaginations, and what we hope the future will be, or what a new world might be like. It speaks to our heart’s desire to journey further and reach into the unknown. The Force Awakens certainly reaches into that place, and by that very definition alone, reaches our expectations; and thus, achieves in being what fans have been looking for in a Star Wars film since The Phantom Menace. If this momentum can continue, the next two films will be the beginning of something new and redefining. One can only hope. Overall Grade: B+

Winter Cocktail RECIPES KAHLUA HOT CHOCOLATE

Skip the store-bought hot cocoa mix – homemade hot chocolate is easier to make than you think with just a handful of ingredients that’s already sitting in your pantry. And it’s even better with a hint of Kahlúa! INGREDIENTS 2 cups milk 2 tablespoons sugar 1 1/2 tablespoons Dutch-processed unsweetened cocoa powder 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon Pinch of nutmeg 1 ounce Kahlúa coffee liqueur Mini marshmallows, for serving Salted caramel, for serving Chocolate syrup, for serving INSTRUCTIONS In a medium saucepan, combine milk, sugar, cocoa powder, cinnamon and nutmeg over medium heat until heated through, about 2-3 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in Kahlúa. Serve immediately, garnished with mini marshmallows, salted caramel and chocolate syrup, if desired.

BOOZY PUMPKIN WHITE HOT CHOCOLATE INGREDIENTS 1/2 cup white chocolate chips (or chopped) 2.5 cups milk (I used 2%) 1/4 cup pumpkin puree 1/4 tsp pumpkin pie spice 1 ounce Kahlua or 1/2 ounce Bourbon whipped cream and caramel for topping (optional)

INSTRUCTIONS In a saucepan over low-medium heat, melt the chocolate chips and 1/2 cup of the milk, whisking often (about 3 minutes). Once melted, add the rest of the milk, the pumpkin and the pumpkin pie spice and stir vigorously to incorporate. Pour a small amount of the hot chocolate into two serving glasses, add one ounce of Kahlua OR one-half ounce of bourbon (bourbon is much stronger in taste). Top off with hot chocolate, stir and then top with whipped cream, caramel sauce and more pumpkin pie spice (optional).

CRADLE

OF FILTH Headling their first North American tour since 2011 BY CHRISTINA RENDANO

Cradle of Filth are a British gothic doom metal band that formed in Suffolk, England in 1991. The band’s musical style has evolved from black metal to a more dark gothic melodic style with all the theatrics. Dani Filth, lead singer, leaves nothing to the imagination when performing live. Not only does he sing with fellow band members, he also brings you into his own dark twisted world with each concert. His lyrics are influenced by his love of gothic literature and poetry and of course horror films. Onstage Cradle of Filth paints their very own unparalleled picture of a dark mythological world unknown to us mortals, but once the lights dim and the intro music starts you are let in, if you will, to the darkest corners of the unknown. Their stage production is one that is very unique and highly unforgettable. Cradle of Filth brings their music videos to life on stage. With each song, the scenes and settings change. One moment you feel as if you are in a dark haunted castle with scary, but intriguing creatures and the next you are in a serene enchanted forest with a beautiful blonde haired angelic maiden singing the most beautiful lullaby. They are far from being considered mainstream and are often scrutinized by some spectators as satanic. Their choice of dark or evil imagery on stage and in their music videos is only for shock value. In my opinion, a band that has been labled shock rock or that has been known to use the “shock value” route is intriging and stirs up some curiosity. This tactic of course sells albums and concert tickets. I am sure everyone remembers the very controversial band of the 90’s, Marilyn Manson. Intrigued or scared? Well here is your chance to see Cradle of Filth on their first North American tour since 2011. Their long awaited “Inquisitional Tourture 2016 Tour” with Butcher Babies and Ne Obliviscaris kicks off January 26th in Boston, MA and ends March 8th in New York. SOUND

UPON A BURNING BODY BY CHRISTINA RENDANO

As I was waiting on Kevin Joel: film maker, videographer, and photographer to walk me backstage for my interview with Ruben Alvarez of Upon A Burning Body, one of the best Metal bands I have seen in a very long time. I remembered back to when I first stumbled across the band. I knew their music, I had seen their videos, including the one featuring Ice T of Body Count, “Turn down for What”. To say the least, I became a fan instantly. I met Upon A Burning Body almost a year ago in Wilmington, NC. They were talking to fans, taking pictures, and hanging out before their set. The guys were very approachable, kind, and genuine. When it was time for Upon A Burning Body to hit the stage I was very excited. The whole vibe of the venue changed. When they played their first song the venue started to fill with more and more people. Every minute and with each song , the energy levels of fans kept rising. The moment lead singer, Danny Leal, said “it’s circle pit time, somebody take charge and spin this whole place”. Fans came from every direction to be part of the large pit that had just formed before my very eyes. I was stunned, amazed, I was at a loss for words. It has been a while since I have seen a band engage and connect with so many people at once in one room.

GVM | 27

RUBEN ALVAREZ I was very excited to see and interview the guitar player of the band that blew me away almost a year ago. Making my way through backstage and outside where our interview was taking place. I was greeted by Ruben with the biggest hug and the sweetest smile, something I had already expected. While setting up for the interview. Ruben and I had a chance to catch up. We joked around and laughed a bit. We talked about his beautiful 5 month old daughter, Emiliah. How life has changed for him and the rest of the band since I saw them last. A few weeks before our interview Ruben had said to me, “one thing we always like to talk about is our struggle. We all came from the hood; we have never had anything handed to us. We have done nothing, but busted our butts to get where we are now.” After our interview it was time for Upon A Burning Body to hit the stage. Once again they played an amazing set. When you see Upon A Burning Body play live, you instantly know they have been working hard for 10 years perfecting their art.
