G-Vegas Goes to

NYC for Jay-Z “Concert of B Sides from the East Side to the West Side” BY KEVIN HOWARD Earlier this summer, G-Vegas had the chance to head to New York City for a little over 24 hours to attend the ultra exclusive Tidal X: Jay-Z B-Sides concert! Tickets were given to us, along with press access. Before the show, we had the opportunity to tour the big apple and walked from just east of Manhattan Island to the center of the city, Central Park just off of Fifth Avenue. In the city we visited the FAO Toy Store, as well as the Apple Store! While checking out Central Park we made an impromptu visit to the Central Park Zoo to visit all types of animals from birds in the avatorium to sea otters, bats, snow leopards, seals, sea lions, and our personal favorite the giant grizzly bear! After seeing these magnificent creatures we cabbed our way back to the Upper East Side where our hotel was so that we could prepare for the concert. The Tidal X: Jay-Z B-Sides concert was an ultra exclusive two-night event and we were awarded tickets for the Sunday show, thanks to our friends at East Carolina Travel. There were probably less than 500 people at the show, which took place Terminal 5, a very intimate venue. Terminal 5 is located on the west side of the big apple, just north of Hell’s Kitchen. While rubbing elbows with the press in the VIP area, we were suddenly stopped by a young man who used to work in a now closed nightclub in Greenville who was happy to see people from G-Vegas taking on the big city. The young man, once a bouncer, now lives in the city. After the show we attended the after party at a venue named Sapphire. We made our way to the VIP section and enjoyed two drinks, but unfortunately left soon after, as two drinks cost us a whopping $75. After

our long night we decided to take a visit to the Empire State Building and were shocked at how fast the elevators could take you up ten floors in two seconds, causing your ears to pop. When at the top we took in the final scenic view of the city which was a great ending to G-Vegas in New York City. We also got the coolest opportunity to meet Luis Guzmán just walking around JFK Airport (Delayed Flight). You might remember him from his memorable roles in such films as “Boogie Nights”, “Waiting…”, or “Carlito’s Way”. Getting the selfie with Luis, that’s what, makes your plane being delayed all worth it! Those of you that were wondering…… No, he didn’t show me “The Brain”!

MUSIC

Pop Music’s Fallen Angel: Bebe Rexha BY TRAVIS JONES

“Pour a shot in my glass and I’ll forget forever.” “The dreams I died for are now killing me.” These are just two lines from a couple of pop music’s newcomer Bebe Rexha’s new EP, “I Don’t Wanna Grow Up.” Rexha is an Albanian pop artist who you may recognize from her feature on Cash Cash’s 2013 summer anthem, “Take Me Home.” If this doesn’t ring a bell then maybe you have heard her tearing up the charts alongside David Guetta and Nicki Minaj this summer with their monster hit “Hey Mama.” Bebe Rexha’s debut EP was released this May and it is definitely not for someone who suffers from chronic sadness. The EP has five tracks, all of which revolve around something tragic, such as a love gone wrong, realizing your dream isn’t what you thought about, or telling the world that you may be crazy but it’s okay. Although the tracks are on such sad subject matters, they are beautifully written and extremely catchy. Rexha’s riffs and unique voice will get stuck in your head and she has a way of touch-

GVM | 9

ing your soul with her music. Rexha has been working her way up the ladder for quite some time; in fact she was a part of Pete Wentz’s electro-pop band he formed when he took a break from music in 2009 to spend time with his family. The group was called Black Cards and Rexha left the group in 2012. In 2013 Rexha signed with Warner Bros. Records after a three label bidding war right after the song she wrote for Eminem and Rihanna, “The Monster,” went global. Since then Rexha has released singles and now an EP as well as written many more hits, including “All Hands on Deck,” the current radio hit for R&B princess, Tinashe. Bebe Rexha’s debut EP is now available on iTunes, Spotify, Amazon, and the Google Play Store. Give it a listen and check all of her stuff out as she will be going far in the industry and is planning on releasing a new single later this year, as well as hopefully her debut album.

5 Things to do this summer Instead of Interning As internship application deadlines are quickly approaching (and passing), students wait in anticipation, constantly refreshing their emails and checking their phones, to see if there is a new message that will determine their entire plans for the summer. While some students might land their dream internship, others might be faced with empty email inboxes and no voicemail. Students who don’t land that perfect internship should not be disheartened, as there are still many options and opportunities to make their summers productive and resume-worthy. And some of these opportunities can even be more rewarding than sitting in an office building 40 hours a week missing out on the summer sun.

1. STUDY ABROAD

What better way to spend a summer than in another country and also getting college credit for it? It is more than just a glorified summer vacation; it is a chance for students to enjoy their education in a new setting that will bring on new challenges. While the stressors of exams and papers might not be as prevalent, students will still be constantly thinking and realizing things they would not have otherwise, such as how to buy groceries in a market while barely knowing the native language. The benefits to studying abroad go far beyond professional development, as students often come back with life-changing experiences.

2. SUMMER CLASSES

If studying abroad is not in a student’s budget, taking a couple of summer courses can be beneficial. It can help guarantee that students will complete their majors in time to graduate without taking an extra semester. Summer classes are usually smaller in size as well, so students can have more oneon-one attention, and who knows — you might meet that professor

who becomes a lifelong mentor. It is definitely more likely to happen there than in a lecture hall filled with over 200 students. 3. UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH Research with a professor can sometimes be more beneficial than an internship. It allows students to hone in on their interests and build skills needed for graduate school. While students might think undergraduate research is mostly for the sciences, there are options for research in almost any field. Not to mention, there are fellowships and grants for research projects, so it can be more appealing than an unpaid, credit-earning internship.

4. WORK

It always helps to save up during the summer, so that going back to school students have a little extra spending money and do not have to worry as much about balancing work and school. It also then allows for students to focus on getting an internship during the school year.

5. VOLUNTEER

Whether it is going on a WOOFing adventure or starting a local Habitat for Humanity chapter, a volunteer experience can lead to a very enriching summer. Volunteering can allow for students to travel and offer the chance to gain leadership skills that look great on a resume. Starting a community project, such as a cancer walk, can help a student gain the organizational and professional skills needed for future goals. So for the students who are rejected from their internship applications, it is important not to get too discouraged and only look forward. Students should have a plan that will enable them to progress and have a more productive summer than they might have had wearing suits all summer in 90-degree weather. APPS

App of the month. MY IDOL BY TRAVIS JONES

Have you ever wondered what you would look like if you were a digital avatar? If so then good news! The people at Huanshi Ltd. have developed an app called My Idol just for this! The app, which has just recently been launched in English, takes a selfie of you and makes you an avatar that looks very similar to you. The best part is once you have an avatar you can change their hair and clothes and then have them do some pretty ridiculous actions. For instance, pole dancing. One feature on

the app allows you to put your avatar into a pole-dancing scene in which you can save and share with your friends! If you have been on Instagram in the past month you may have seen stars like Miley Cyrus and Sam Smith post some of their digital avatars for their fans’ enjoyment. The app is great for sitting around with friends and laughing at your digital self! The app is currently only available for Apple products.

“Internet’s Funniest New Obsession” – kotaku.com MyIdol is an app that can turn your selfie into a 3D avatar. Using 3D facial recognition technology, MyIdol enables you to create your unique avatar. You can adjust skin color, hairstyle, eye tone, and add mustache to make your avatar look more like you; you can dress up it by add clothes, accessories, and even face paints; you can choose an action for it to perform. The funniest part is to generate emoji, make profile pictures, and direct your own MV using that unique avatar. Now, share the little animated version of you to all your friends.

EMERALDS OF THE CITY WHERE THEY ARE NOW krista melkonian Hey Yall ! Since representing GVegas as Miss April 2014 I have moved back to my home town of Havelock, NC. I am going on 4 years working for Hooters and have had the amazing opportunity to compete along side of some truly amazing girls from all over the region three years in a row in the Road to Vegas Bikini Pageants. I have continued to model for Manna Photography out of Greenville and have had the pleasure of becoming a Ring Girl for Next Level Fight Club. The confidence I needed for these adventures was built through G-Vegas Magazine, working with such a great group of people who always encouraged me and pushed me to break out of my shell has done wonders for my confidence. I owe the strong woman I am today to them (and my mother of course!) Along with working at Hooters and competing in Bikini Contests I am now a Dog Trainer, strange combo, I know ! I Currently work with The Refined K9 doing basic obedience training, aggression/problem behavior modification as well as Service Dog training. I have to say that it has been a truly unbelievable

experience for me getting to work so closely with animals that I love dearly and helping the physically/ mentally ill create lifetime bonds with these dogs as their companions. This job has increased my Confidence, strength, discipline and drive to never give up. One of my goals in life is to be a positive role model in my community and beyond. Growing up I was the shy girl who always took a back seat for adventure, I rarely spoke my mind or tried anything new. I never felt like I could stand out nor did I ever look at myself and think I would be where I am today. Starting with baby steps, of course, I hope to be encouragement for every girl who has looked in the mirror and not felt good enough.

Confidence is EVERYTHING. You are Beautiful, You are strong, You are smart, and You sure as hell are Good enough for absolutely everything. Believe in yourself and you can do anything you set your mind to. You’ll be seeing me in the calendar again G-Vegas ! Thanks again, Much Love - Krista

LIFE

EMERALDS OF THE CITY WHERE THEY ARE NOW Taylor Froneberger I am truly honored to participate in the G-Vegas Girls follow-up!! So, here is an update on what I am doing and where I am now....... After graduating from ECU in 2012, I moved back home to Asheville, North Carolina. I worked a few odd jobs here and there until I started working with my current employer. For the past two years I have been working with at-risk and troubled youth in a home setting, and now a school setting. Working with these kids has taught me a lot. I am actually making a career change because of this epic, (to say the least), experience. I am going back to school for web design/programming. Yes, pretty girls and be geeks too! Another big change that has occurred in my life is that I got married last May. Michael and I met at ECU, made it through a very long deployment, and tied the knot! My family has grown from just Moxy, (my retired greyhound that we rescued), to Michael, Moxy, Sergie (greyhound #2), and I. No kids yet!! We are still not ready for those. Our dogs are doing just fine filling that void, haha. Michael and I now live in the quaint town of Waynesville, North Carolina, (home of some wonderful craft breweries!). He is employed with the state, and I am just working on moving to a career

where I don’t have chairs or fists thrown at me. Even though I have had many changes in my life from the days that I was a G-Vegas Girl, I must say that G-Vegas provided a lot of great experiences for me. Being able to participate in the many G-Vegas activities provided a great base to build my confidence in meeting new people and helping to promote a company. One of my fondest memories will always be the event where I got to meet Mario Lopez, (my celebrity crush at the time). Being given the responsibility and the opportunity to interact with so many awesome people has taught me to always be self-aware and professional, especially when you are one of the many faces of a brand or company. This is a valuable skill and experience that I have been able to share with employers. Lastly, being apart of the G-Vegas calendar and family will always been an amazing memory to me. I will always have my calendar to look at through the years to remind me of an amazing opportunity, and how physically attractive I was ;-p hahah. Sincerely, Taylor Froneberger

LIFE

HOW DO YOU LIKE

YOUR MEN? BY RANDY MOORE

I’m convinced that every woman in the world is looking for the same guy. Of course, not literally the same guy — not even the same type of guy, but basically the same guy. All women look for the same fundamental qualities: They look for men they are attracted to — although what each woman finds attractive varies; they look for men who’ll be honest with them, who are successful and capable of providing for them — whether or not they already provide for themselves; they look for men who treat them with respect and love them. But, most importantly, the one thing every woman is looking for in a man is a man who can provide the life she’s always dreamed of. I don’t mean a man who has enough money to buy his woman jewelry, cars, yachts and other trinkets; I mean a man who can help create a journey his partner would love living. The only way this is possible is if he has the aforementioned basic qualities women find attractive (all people find attractive, really). These qualities are necessary in order for someone to have enough selflessness to sufficiently love a woman the way she deserves to be loved. Every woman is looking for this man — the same man — a man who is so full of life, he sweeps her off her feet, out of her reality and places her gently into his. I can only imagine how difficult it must be to find such a man. I know plenty of men and I, honestly, have difficulty imagining women being happy as their partners. Not that they’re bad people, but because they’re so lost in their own lives that they, themselves, are miserable. Sure, we often say that finding the love of our lives gives us the purpose we seek, and although that may be sufficient for the less egocentric and ambitious, it isn’t enough for those of us who are hungry for greatness. And let’s be honest: Women want great men. Women want men who refuse to give themselves to their lovers entirely. They are attracted to men who are ambitious, driven, smart and egocentric — it allows for a subtle, but constant yearning for them, as the attention

GVM | 27

they give women is limited. And, to women, never as much attention as they desire. There is nothing in the world people want more than that which is denied. This goes for men just as it does for women. In fact, this constant tension is what allows for that intense emotion we call romantic love. In other words, it’s a very good thing. Or at least, it can be, as long as both individuals understand that that sort of tension is not only healthy, but necessary to keep the love alive. This, of course, gets even more complicated when we consider the fact that most of these driven men will choose their work over their women — something that, I’m afraid, isn’t allowed. Not in a woman’s eyes at least. The ideal man is a man who will dive into his work with a fervor, but will always be there for his woman when she needs him. Women want great men who think of them as the most important people in their lives. It’s a conquest of sorts, but then again, love always is. We want the person we desire, whom we’re in love with, to love us back at least as much as we love him or her. We want the person we love, the person we find to be the most important thing in the world, to believe we are the most important thing in the world, too. People always want to make love out to be some sort of selfless act. It’s not. Even if we love for the sake of loving, we sure as hell feel a need for that love to be reciprocated. If it isn’t, it hurts. Because it hurts, love must have a factor of selfishness to it — it’s literally our egos hurting. Being a little selfish, being egocentric and even slightly egotistical, isn’t a bad thing. It isn’t wrong; it’s natural. Both men and women would live much happier lives — with their partners — were they to be a bit more selfish. Or rather, if they stopped pretending like they weren’t selfish when, in reality, they are. Everybody is a selfless lover until the relationship starts having problems. If you were entirely selfless then you couldn’t possibly have problems as you’d always be giving in to your partner’s requests. You need to be selfish because you need that tension to survive. In the beginning of a relationship, it’s easy: There’s so much uncertainty involved. Will she want to see me again? Will he call me? Will we fall in love? Once the chase is over and things get comfortable, you need that selfish tension in order to keep things exciting. Without tension, there is no “potential energy” — there isn’t enough life in the relationship. Women need men who create excitement not only for them, but with them. They want men who can take them on adventures, take them out of their comfort zones and to experience new experiences with. They want men they can live a life of change with — a life we are all forced to live, but most often fail to live successfully. They want men who will constantly remind them, make them feel, how alive they are. We spend so much time these days doing things that eat away at what little time we are allotted. We all need a partner who can help slow down the remaining time we do have and help us enjoy it to its fullest potential.
