Dana Rochelle

Outside the Catwalk BY NATHAN BLACK

{

{

“I like to dance the most when I’m cooking.

Late last month we sat down with Dana Rochelle, the winner of Emeralds of the City. This makes her the winner of the calendar contest that took place through the bikini tournament that went on during this past summer. We sat down with Dana to talk to her about her experience with winning the contest and to find out what makes an Emerald tick. Q: Where are you from and how old are you? Dana: I’m 21 years old and I’m Wake Forest. Q: How did you get into modeling? Dana: I got started with G-Vegas when I was 18, but I studied modeling from several institutes around North Carolina. This is definitely a career for me. Q: Where do you get your make-up tips from? I know people are using the internet more and more for this reason. Do you have any reliable internet sources?

GVM | 5

We twerk while we’re cooking. We call it Corking”.

Dana: Pinterest. Sadly I don’t use many other sites other than that for beauty tips. It’s my go-to. It’s a struggle though with my skin, finding the right balance, I have a terrible acne problem. Q: What is your favorite kind of shoot and how do you like to portray yourself? Dana: Well, I love early morning shoots. It’s warm and crisp, not like at sunset which makes everything orange. I like to come off more sexy and fun but I really mold myself to what’s going on that day. It depends what kind of shoot we’re doing. I’m open to anything. Q: Any unusual jobs with modeling? Dana: I was a live mannequin once. It wasn’t the best but it was interesting. People pulled at my clothes looking for prices tags and touched me which wasn’t my favorite. Q: So you were like one of the guards at Buckingham palace? Dana: Pretty much, except wearing more uncomfortable shoes.

GVM GVM

LIFE

Q: What do you watch for entertainment, TV and such? Dana: Dr. Who. Believe it, or not. I’m a Whovian. Q: Really? Dana: Yes, I’m a big nerd. I’m in theater and I did marching band back in high school. Q: What about Star Wars? Dana: I love Star Wars. The old one’s especially. I love Ewoks. They’re so cute but they’ll also bash you over the head. Q: How about the new Star Trek movies? Dana: I liked those too. Benedict Cumberbatch was so great. I think my nerdom goes back to my love of theater. I tried doing acting when I was younger but that didn’t really pan out, so I went into stage design. I’ve worked on many of the stage settings for plays that have been happening at ECU for the last year or more. Q: What productions? Dana: Oh, uh, Kiss Me Kate, Dracula, Streetcar Named Desire and Camelot. I helped on Arcadia which is coming out soon, too. Q: What’s your favorite food? Dana: Italian. I like pasta with red sauce

Q: What else do you put in there. Dana: Hm, chicken, cheese, turkey meat. Q: Wait, turkey isn’t Italian. Dana: It could be. Q: I don’t think so. Dana: It is when I make it. My roommate and I like to get creative when we cook. Q: Where do you like to dance? Dana: Honestly I like to dance the most when I’m cooking. We twerk while we’re cooking. We call it corking. Q: Do you twerk anywhere else? Dana: No! Heck no. I tried and found I have more self-respect than I thought. Q: So it went that bad, huh? Dana: Yes. Q: What models inspire you? Dana: All the models from Victoria Secret. They inspire me every time I see them. Q: Favorite article of clothing? Dana: Underwear, actually. All my other clothes get paint on them but underwear is always pristine. Q: What kind of men do you like. Dana: I like tall muscular guys. Q: Favorite male actors? Dana: Chris Hemsworth and Gerard Butler. Those accents. I like funny and outgoing

guys. Q: Favorite female actors? Dana: Scarlett Johansson and Julia Roberts. Q: What’s your favorite movie? Dana: I don’t know. Any movie that makes me think. I like a movie that keeps me talking about it long after it’s over. I want a real reason to go see a movie. Q: What’s your favorite play? Dana: Mh! Clybourne Park. That play left me really looking at the world and culture very differently. It pointed out a lot of things I never knew or just didn’t notice. Q: Who do you hate? Dana: I don’t hate anyone. Q: But like if you were asked jokingly, who do you hate? What would you say? Dana: Hmm...People who don’t like G-Vegas Magazine. And I hate closed minded people. Q: What’s the worst feeling? Dana: Feeling like you’re nothing. Q: What’s the best feeling? Dana: Corking with my roommate. Just being myself and being with the ones I love.

GVM FASHION

Spring 2015 Fashion Trends That Everyone Will Be Wearing We know that spring seems so far away (sob!) but trust us, the time will go by quickly. (And in the meantime, ease the pain of the cold months with these chic winter accessories!) However, stores are already trying to get rid of their winter stock to make room for the spring 2015 fashion trends that everybody and their cousin will be wearing. Fortunately, plenty of 2014’s fashion trends will still be wearable come next spring. Think more crop tops, logo sweaters, sheer and ‘70s influences. So, without further ado, here are the 10 spring fashion trends that you’re gonna want to get your hands on in 2015:

Boho Everywhere

Sheer, And More Sheer

Bridal White

Flats And Sneakers

Ditch your mini-skirts and tank tops for something a bit more romantic (and comfortable). The new boho look for spring 2015 comes courtesy of designers such as Vera Wang, who sent soft floor-sweeping dresses down the runway; Dries Van Noten, who got creative with funky prints; and Tommy Hilfiger, who dressed his models in hippie looks with a twist.

For all you brides-to-be who are getting hitched in 2015, this is your lucky year. The spring/summer 2015 runways were filled with a variety of gorgeous white hues on everything from mini-dresses to Victorian-era looks with a modern edge. Designers such as Louis Vuitton, Erdem and Givenchy gave the spring hue new life in their collections.

Fresh Florals

“Florals? For spring? Groundbreaking.” Yes, we’ll never get tired of listening to Miranda Priestly chastise a Runway minion, but she does have a point. Fortunately, designers such as Chanel, Marni and Miu Miu offered thoroughly modern florals for the thoroughly modern woman. Think big, bold and unabashedly feminine. Florals: they’re here for good.

The New Crop Top

And we can’t stop...and we won’t stop (wearing crop tops, that is). Sure, Miley Cyrus made crop tops the uniform of 2013 and 2014, but the revealing outerwear of 2015 turns it on its head. Think ladylike and elegant (as seen at Oscar de la Renta), as well as boxy (at Marc Jacobs) and even brunch-worthy (as seen at Michael Kors). Crop tops are for everyone in 2015. GVM | 7

Let’s face it: sheer fabrics are never going away and thank goodness—not only do they jazz up tops and dresses but they make us feel like we’re wearing nothing, which is pleasing. But of course, designers wouldn’t be designers if they didn’t mix things up, which is why labels such as Ports 1961 and Roberto Cavalli led the charge with daring and outrageously feminine sheer looks on the spring 2015 runways.

Long live flats! Long live sneakers! The spring/summer 2015 collections basically said that heels are dead (RIP) and resurrected flats and sneakers as the go-to shoe of the season. Labels such as Chanel and Peter Som paved the way with their chic and comfortable footwear. (It’s about time.)

Restructured Denim

Listen up, Canucks: denim is not just used for a Canadian tuxedo, ok? Ok. So, designers got to work at creating denim looks that were thoroughly cool and modern, including bedazzled pants (at Dolce & Gabbana), asymmetrical dresses (at Bottega Veneta) and comfy jumpsuits (at Chloé). You guys, denim is hip again!

Polo Shirts

Remember those Ralph Lauren polo shirts everyone wore in the ‘90s? Well, they’re back and better than ever (and honestly, we’d never thought we’d say that). So yes, Polo Ralph Lauren sent his iconic shirt down the spring/summer 2015 runway butthis variation was bright and paired with a maxi skirt, ensuring that you’ll literally be the most comfortable person on Earth. Other designers got in on the classic look too, including Alexander Wang and Tory Burch. (Source: HuffPost Style Canada)

SOUND

A Garden of Sounds New Music Spotlight:

Kat Dahlia You may have heard her track “I think I’m In Love” in an episode of Grey’s Anatomy last month, and ever since, Cuban-American singer Kat Dahlia has been climbing up the ladder of success. Dahlia, 24, is from Miami and signed to Epic Records, with a sharp voice that can cut right to the heart whether it be an upbeat love track, or a heartbreaking ballad. Her debut album, My Garden was released earlier this year in January and has been on repeat on Spotify for myself for the past month. Dahlia’s music showcases her powerhouse voice in a way that is her own. The best way to describe her debut album is a mix of pop and hip-hop megahits that all have a taste of her Latin roots entwined in them. The album title, My Garden, is a perfect title for this collection of tracks

BY: TRAVIS JONES

as each one is different than the one before it, much like how gardens are. Personally, I find the track “Crazy” to be particularly well written and catchy. The track was one of the free iTunes singles of the week at the beginning of the year, which aided in Dahlia’s mainstream discovery. Another track that was an original single for the album, “Gangsta,” is the perfect tune if you are pre-gaming to go downtown. The track has a hip-hop vibe whilst not being too hard for casual drinking with friends. Without a doubt, Dahlia is heading places and we will soon be hearing her raspy tones bleeding through our car radios. My Garden is available now on iTunes, as well as Spotify. SPAZZ FEST VI: THE WOODSTOCK OF GREENVILLE BY NATHAN BLACK

Often enough I hear people asking, “what’s going on in Greenville?” People ask where all the good music went, as if there were some drain that all the bands of three or four years ago, or whenever the apex of their college/night life experience peaked, went? Where did all those scene kids go? Where did all the metal bands with vicious dramatism and swinging hair that spun like clothes in a dryer against pulsing lights go? Where did the mellow vibes of budding pop stars coming to the stage for the first time and singing their diddies to girls all pumping their knees and ready to chant the much anticipated hook go? I have expressed before that “Greenville is a town where music is born and nurtured”, but few realize that many of the local bands that they grew fond of were, in fact, a part of a music scene that has been silently flowing through Greenville for longer than most consider. In the (clandestine) tradition of Greenville music, a speakeasy like venue opened some years back and embodied the energy of the counter-culture and artistically minded students and youth of the area,

GVM | 11

this place, called the Spazzatorium, was only an entity for a breath of several years but the movement that it sparked still remains much in tact in the form of Spazz Presents events that strike up at different locations throughout the town to this day. For those wondering where all the local music of the past went, well, they need only seek out SPAZZ FEST to find out. SPAZZ FEST is an annual music festival that will happen again this year, starting Friday, March 19th and continue all the way through to Sunday, the 22nd. It will be spread out over several locations and feature a potluck to kick-off, drink specials at all bar locations, a free Sunday brunch from Tipsy Teapot (only for Golden Ticket holders), a drag show, and a chili cook-off. There will be exclusive SPAZZ FEST T-shirts for sale this year, as well as patches, and most, if not all, bands and musicians will be selling their music at each show. Once again, Golden Tickets will be available this year and will give access to all events and extras perks for those commitmented to the full weekend of events. Golden Tickets are available at Tipsy

Teapot, and East Coast Music and Video. The bands that are confirmed at this point include: Paleface, Eric Sommer, Zack Mexico, The Wet Boys, Post Sun Times, Handsome Foxes, No Brainer, Poison Anthem, The Ghost Of Saturday Night, Ambits, and The Out Of Limits. This small list of acts only comprises some of the highlights of the weekend and is a part of a much larger roster of bands scheduled to perform. There are also surprise acts which have not yet been revealed, so it is suggested to follow the online sites on Facebook and/or Twitter as news filters in. For more information and a chance to follow developments on SPAZZ FEST, visit their event page on Facebook; and for more insight on what SPAZZ FEST has been like in the past, watch the documentary, Spazz Out!, available for free on YouTube. St. Patrick’s Day

Fun & Facts Did you know?

A few facts about St. Patrick’s Day that you may not know: • Corned beef and cabbage is a traditional St. Patrick’s Day dish • There are 36.9 million U.S. residents with Irish roots. This number is more than eight times the population of Ireland itself (4.5 million). • Irish is the nation’s second most frequently reported ancestry, ranking behind German.

• The first St. Patrick’s Day parade took place in the United States on March 17, 1762, when Irish soldiers serving in the English military marched through New York City. • More than 100 St. Patrick’s Day parades are held across the United States. New York City and Boston are home to the largest celebrations. • At the annual New York City St. Patrick’s Day parade, participants

GVM | 13

march up 5th Avenue from 44th Street to 86th Street. More than 150,000 people take part in the event, which does not allow automobiles or floats. Where did the Irish get their world-known symbol, the Shamrock? The shamrock, which was also called the “seamroy” by the Celts, was a sacred plant in ancient Ireland because it symbolized the rebirth of spring. By the seventeenth century, the shamrock had become a symbol of emerging Irish nationalism. As the English began to seize Irish land and make laws against the use of the Irish language and the practice of Catholicism, many Irish began to wear the shamrock as a symbol of their pride in their heritage and their displeasure with English rule.

THE SOUND

VETERANS OF SPAZZ FEST:

Highlighted Performers:

Ian Collins

BY NATHAN BLACK

Ian Collins is the lead singer for Handsome Foxes and guitarist/singer for The Ethnographers. His band, The Ethnographers, were the headlining act of last years SPAZZ FEST and, in lieu of the sixth SPAZZ FEST that is swiftly approaching, we sat down with him via video chat to ask about his experience with playing the center stage and what makes SPAZZ so fun and unique.

Q:Compared to other festivals how does Spazz Fest measure up? A: I’ve gotten to play a few festivals in the past. Barefoot on the Mall, here [in Greenville]. RaleighPalooza, did festivals in Chapel Hill and Charlotte. But with the SPAZZ there a lot more dedication. People get more excited because there’s finally something to do. It’s more raw. Not as corporate.

GVM | 17

Q: Is it nice to be playing somewhere again that’s familiar? A: Definitely, and that has something to do with why Spazz Fest is so much fun for me. It’s seeing people I haven’t seen in a long time. That’s always nice. Q: What was the best band you saw from last year? A: A band called Dragon King blew me

away. They’re a Philly band. I really enjoyed them. They reminded me of the good old Spazzatorium days. They’re like just good indie garage rock. Like Tokyo Police Club, something like that. Q: Did you like the structure of Spazz Fest? A: This last year’s festival was very well organized, much tighter than some of the

GVM GVM

THE SOUND

earlier ones. There’s some problems that occur from having multiple venues like that, but they really made it work despite that. There were good crowds. I really liked what they did with Christy’s and the outside show. That worked really well. Q: What show did you feel the crowd responded most positively toward? A: Honestly, I really felt our band [The Ethnographers] got a great response at Peasant’s last year. It was such an eclectic and energetic crowd. ... I saw big burly tattooed guys crowd surfing and then I saw a group of girls crying over in another corner, and it was really funny to see that contrast in the crowd. It wasn’t just all the old Greenvilleheads coming for the show, it was new people, also, and they’re younger and they’re just entering the music scene there and getting involved. Q: Do you find it strange that people grew up with your music? A: Yes, it’s very strange and kind of surreal in a way. I never really thought it would take off like it did and when I started see-

ing people at shows that weren’t just my friends, I thought that was kind of strange. And later I would hear other guys in bands say they were influenced by The Ethnographers. That blew me away, to know something I had helped create influenced someone else it was crazy to consider. ... I heard from Sam [Samantha Hollen (keyboardist for The Ethnogs)] that she was in a auto shop and heard a little nine year old girl singing “let’s be zombies” [Avec Moi]. It’s interesting to see who you will affect. Q: What do you feel SPAZZ FEST is doing right? A: It’s getting a lot of different sounds together. It doesn’t have one style. It has many styles. And it has this all within walking distance of each other. Some other festivals I feel they have shows geared with one style in mind and so you might hear the same songs from four times over. Q: Any other stories from SPAZZ FEST you remember?

A: It just makes me feel good to see old friends. But my little brother came up to see us play and he jumped on stage and sang with us. That was a good feeling. I love that there’s not a lot of ego at Spazz Fest. It’s very genuine. Q: Any final words? Words of wisdom? A: Keep going, [everyone]. I hope SPAZZ FEST reaches the level of Hopscotch. I think it has the potential to do that, too.

Ian Collins and his other group, Handsome Foxes, will be performing at this year’s SPAZZ FEST at Tipsy Teapot/Lime Light just in time for the release of their latest EP. Be sure to look for them, and be sure to follow them on Facebook and Bandcamp at handsomefoxes.bandcamp.com.

Maroon 5’s Sugar “Wedding Crashers”

So, Maroon 5 recently released their music video for sugar in which they take on the role of wedding crashers, surprising multiple wedding parties with a performance of their hit song. How would you feel if Maroon 5 crashed your wedding? I think my life would be complete if Maroon 5 crashed my wedding!

I would absolutely freak out... And probably pass out!

- Krystal P. - Sophie F.

I love this!! It actually makes the song better...or even tolerable. - Arran W.

Introduction to the video was great. I was getting that movie vibe between Wedding Crashers & The Hang Over. From the middle to the end it reminded me of The Beatles and Red Hot Chili Peppers mix baby music video. Yeeeah! Greg R.

Epic! Maroon 5 is the bomb and this video is so amazingly cool and it’s funny how the grooms are just as excited to see them as the brides haha. Adam is one of the best I mean he sends chills up my spine when he sings. - Christina L.

LIFE

Winning The March Madness Bracket Wars..... Let Your Girlfriend Fill It Out Every March, offices, fraternities, friend groups, bars and sports websites open up the competition for men to showcase just how smart they are when it comes to college hoops. Yes, ladies and gents, I’m taking about the basketball Holy Grail: March Madness. Millions of men spend countless hours, days and weeks trying to outsmart one another to figure out which 12 seed will upset a 5 seed. Jay Bilas becomes a Christ figure as men clench to his expert advice in the weeks leading up to the first tip-off. Despite all of the research many people do, there’s always a Elizabeth from accounting who ends up winning the office pool, because she somehow knew number 11 (George Mason) would beat number 1 (UCONN) in 2006 and that number 9 (Northern Iowa) would beat number 1 (Kansas) in 2010. It seems each year guys try to fill out the perfect bracket, and the stakes always are getting much higher each year, so check out these five reasons why you should let your girlfriend fill out your NCAAA bracket...

5. She’s not emotionally invested. Your girlfriend probably spends more time watching “The Real Housewives of… wherever” than she does watching Dickie “V” and the gang. During your years at Carolina together, she didn’t even know where the Dean Dome was. Because of this, she has no reason to hate any team. You, on the other hand, might be a diehard UNC fan and can’t see yourself putting Duke past the second round — even though Duke may be a heavy favorite to make the final four.

4. Women’s intuition. Have you ever been caught cheating and wondered how she found out? Maybe she responded with something like, “Something in my gut just told me you were up to no good.” THAT is what we call a woman’s intuition. So much of the time a woman’s intuition is on point, so while you might have picked UConn to win it all last year, then crossed it out and put Carolina, your lady may have had the intuition to stick with her first choice.

3. She’s not logical. You probably know a story like this: Natalie from Sigma Sigma Sigma beat Trey from Sigma Phi Epsilon in the Greek bracket pool in 2012 because Natalie picked Davidson over Georgetown. Trey (like many other men) looked at the matchups, the records and different offensive and defensive schemes by both teams. After his research, Trey confidently made an educated choice and went with Georgetown. Meanwhile, Natalie has a dog named Prince Davie and that sort of sounds like Davidson and her ex-boyfriend, whom she hates, is GVM | 21

BY RANDY MOORE

named George, which sounds like Georgetown, so she went with Davidson. Natalie wins.

2. She has inside dirt. Girls usually know A LOT of people. Your girlfriend may be friends with Amanda, who gets her nails done with Michelle, who speaks to Andrea, who is sleeping with Kentucky’s point guard. If the starting center is suddenly academically ineligible to play in the tournament, your girlfriend very well may know before “SportsCenter” does. This may make all the difference when your bracket is due in the next five minutes.

1. You WIN! Girls love feeling like they matter to you, especially when it comes to a topic that you normally shut them out of participating in. You may or may not win your bracket pool by taking your girlfriend’s advice, but you will win the game that matters the most — the one that means making her happy.

APPS

App of the month.

DRUNK MODE BY TRAVIS JONES

We’ve all had those nights in which we’ve had a few too many shots or that one extra beer that put us over the edge. Along with this comes many mistakes, whether it be drunk texting/calling your ex or losing your friends downtown. Well fear not, Drunk Mode, a new app is here to keep your night running smoothly. Drunk Mode allows you to restrict access to certain contacts so that you cannot

contact them for twelve hours. Not only does the app offer that feature, but it also allows you to track your friends via GPS so you don’t end up across town alone. There is also a thing called breadcrumbs, which will show you where all you went the night before, just in case your memory is a little foggy the next day. Drunk Mode is currently available on both the Google Play store and the App Store.

The Drunk Mode App for the Iphone has three features 1. Stop Drunk Dialing: Hides select phone contacts when you want to get drunk so you cannot drunk call these selected friends for up to 12 hours 2. Find My Drunk: Allows you to track your drunk friends via GPS so you don’t lose them when you are out partying. 3. Breadcrumbs: Shows you where you went last night.
