LIFE
Men Are Like Animals, Kind Of. BY RANDY MOORE
Men are like bugs sometimes. They either crawl all over you and creep you out, or they leave you with the painful sting of rejection and then fly away, never to be seen again. Sometimes in the early stages of dating, men do resemble insects. We can have a strong reaction when we start feeling bugged. Some move waaay too fast, messaging you several times an hour all day long until you get the heebie jeebies. You just want to shout “Enough already!” and swat them away. Then there’s the guy who moves in so fast all you hear is a buzzing in your head as you get hit by the whirlwind of compliments that he’s laying on as thick as honey. But almost as soon as the compliments sink in, so does the stinger as he conquers his prey, leaving you smitten and bitten by the quick retreat. Who knows where he buzzes off to as fast as he flew into the picture? But men can also be like other animals, including some you might like a little better. Let’s count the ways.
ANIMAL ATTRACTION #1: DEER, OH DEAR!
This guy is so tentative, that he’s like a deer that can’t stop staring at you but appears ready to run if you take the slightest step in his direction. Let him bolt away!
ANIMAL ATTRACTION #2: BEAR HUGGABLE
Then there’s the man who’s big and strong, and uses that strength to hug you and hold on tight. He wants you to know how muscular he is, and it seems like he might hold on forever and never let you go. If he’s loyal and lovable besides being huggable and affectionate, you just might let him!
GVM | 5
ANIMAL ATTRACTION #3: THE MONKEY
Yes, we’ve all met the guy who is funny and acts up to get your attention. He knows that he’s a bit of a character, and he plays it up. He’s unique, right? He keeps you smiling. He keeps you guessing. And when relationships get difficult, as they always do at one time or another, having a sense of humor can be the key to getting over it or splitting up. Better to have your sides splitting with laughter, right?
ANIMAL ATTRACTION #4: THE LIZARD
Unfortunately, there are some men who just don’t know how to kiss in a way that will turn you on. Instead, they express their enthusiasm with their tongues. They’re not thinking about how this feels on your end; they’re thinking about how excited they are to get intimate. So they rush in and overpower you with the tongue thrust. The lizard approach will never, ever work. You might be able to reteach this guy how to kiss in an appealing way. But the relationship won’t stick if his tongue is sticking down your throat every time.
ANIMAL ATTRACTION #5: THE LOYAL DOG
Whether you’re a cat person or a dog person, you have to love a guy who is openly affectionate, playful and just wants to be by your side. He’s your companion, not just your lover. He is not a player. He’s friendly with all the people in your life, but he’s devoted to you. You protect and take care of each other. What more can you ask for, really? He can be woman’s best friend. If your man shows good qualities from the animal kingdom, then follow your instincts and give him a chance. It won’t hurt to learn more about the care and feeding of your relationship, either, will it?

The Martian and The Missing Purpose BY NATHAN BLACK
The Martian, a new movie from director, Ridley Scott, and starring Matt Damon, first appeared to me as a film with such a minimal tone to it, I almost wondered how they were going to make it into the epic the trailer proclaimed it to be. Sure enough, it wasn’t the epic I was expecting but it was entertaining nonetheless and very worthy of respect for the subject matter. Foregoing the natural desire to make the story about one astronaut’s journey (cue Elton John’s song Rocket Man) back to his wife and children was a nice touch, and very anti-Hollywood which is refreshing. Instead, a more pertinent matter was brought up (naturally) through the story as the commander of the mission, after leaving Watney (played by Damon) behind on Mars, discovers he is alive and must work with NASA and other international space programs to save him. There is a real story here about seeking redemption and searching the human condition in Watney’s struggles. He struggles with working science, discovering willpower, and overall dealing with the planet’s harsh environment. And this is all well and good, compelling even. Where it falls flat is in Damon himself. He is an accomplished actor and able to carry such a roll, and while the character is given interesting challenges--despite this--no deeper sense of characterization is discovered through these struggles. The strength of this film is that it is trying to separate itself from sentiment and cliches, but there still needs to be something that the audience can latch onto that makes Watney special or, should I say, endearing. The Martian plays itself like Robinson Crusoe in space: through the struggles of one man we discover what makes all of us universally similar. But, there has to be something that still defines this character, and I’m sorry, but playing disco tunes just isn’t enough. The magnificent part of The Martian is that it became a PSA for the importance of science and how someone with an excellent
GVM | 7
understanding of certain fields could apply them to survival tactics. This was the inspiring part and if the film. If the entirety of the film had been just a demonstration about how one man could make a habitat on a harsh and uninhabitable world that would’ve been enough for this viewer. But it wasn’t, it is a movie about characters with a plot, and reintroduced characters that are almost completely forgotten about until they become relevant again, namely the astronauts that left Watney behind, which don’t reappear until an hour or more later. For all the gears that are working in this movie, it still fell a bit short of the runaway. Much respect should be given for making the subject matter the importance of learning science and bringing it to the forefront of public conscious. Science should be championed more often, and no more has it been stressed than in The Martian. Big kudos for that. Otherwise, The Martian appears a bit starved for affection and distant from the rest of humanity (pun intended), which further brands the idea that schooling strickens our ability for human connection. The same stereotype every Dungeons and Dragons player has been labeled with since they were younger. Casting was another high point, also, as Jeff Daniels continues his revived career, springboarding off of his success with The Newsroom. He returns in another commanding role as the director of NASA, Teddy Sanders. Some other humorous actors pop up in scenes for a moment or two: Kristen Wig, Michael Pena, and Donald Glover. A very weathered Sean Bean appears too, looking for every a reason not to get his head chopped off again for not getting Watney back as the flight director of the mission. In conclusion, the movie tries, a great generous try, and succeeds to inspire but fails to grab at the heart, which most can tell is what they were really going for. In the end: -A (mostly for the relevance of the subject matter)

Gilmore Girls
Returns and Reasons to Rejoice BY NATHAN BLACK
Ok, ok, before conclusions are jumped to, I’ll explain: no, I am not a fan of the Gilmore Girls. What I’ve seen of the show had no affect on me in any way. I attribute this reaction to a lack of estrogen and a predilection toward more vulgar humor. But I am no one to judge Gilmore Girls, and in no way am I writing this article just to bash or mansplain it all away. I loved Degrassi. I loved Everwood (believe it, or not). I loved Smallville--Superman is my favorite. Side-thought: totally rooting for him in Dawn of Justice. Gilmore Girls was just something I never got around to, and finally, when it was over, I had no desire to go back and even try. What’s important about the Gilmore Girls returning isn’t so much the show itself, but the trend that it’s following in shows from the past that were cancelled too soon and didn’t get to see their full conclusions or be properly explored to their potential. Netflix continues to make dreams come true, and with shows to prove it like the revival of Arrested Development and Fuller House, which is also slated to come out soon. These are all indications that media is moving away from corporate standards of guessing what people think they want and following the response of what people like.
GVM | 11
On one hand this may crush creativity in some ways, causing a vacuum of prepackaged ideas to be built on top of each other, but I think this is also an amazing time to realize that entertainment is being directed by the viewers instead of networks who try to figure out what to fill the void with next. Even the return of Wet Hot American Summer in series form is evidence of this. Where there might have only been a sequel that could’ve been hit or miss, instead, the audience gets a complete series, with all the same attention to detail, mood and energy of the original. The Gilmore Girls returning, even if you don’t care for it, or, like me, never really gave it a chance, should be recognized as a big deal. The viewers are starting to be listened to; make your voice known. Continue to root and champion your favorite shows, guys. It’s a brave new world. You never know what might be next. I’m banking on Firefly, for the win. Other people who know the series know what I mean. So, before you scoff and make snide remarks about how this show looks, be aware of the mass of people that it took to pull this off. The people have spoken.

ride for frankie blue BY JOE BLIZ
“Frankie Leggens, better known as Frankie Blue amongst the BMX community, was killed in a motorcycle accident while driving home from Red Bull Dreamline on October 11th, 2014. He had the biggest heart I’ve ever seen and was truly a pleasure to be around. He was always helping others and was especially nice to the local bmx kids at Jaycee’s skate park. Often kids would need help fixing their bikes or learning new tricks and Frankie was always there to lend a helping hand. His family was left behind with lots of medical bills and I am going to ride my bmx bike from Los Angeles, CA to Greenville, NC to raise money for those medical bills and to build him a statue so that people may remember to always help others and to live every day as if it is your last. You never know when that day may come. Be kind to others and leave behind a legacy worth remembering. All donations are much appreciated. This is for you frankie blue.”

FEELS LIKE CAROLINA: PARMALEE IS COMING HOME BY CHRISTINA BOGART
When you hear the name Parmalee most people think “Carolina” or “Already Callin’ You Mine”. I, however, hear songs such as “Daylight” or “Photograph”. Songs way before the Country Era of Parmalee. Little known fact, they were rock before they were ever country, folks. If you are a local or even a long time resident of the area you would be familiar to the name and know that Matt Thomas, Scott Thomas, Barry Knox and Josh McSwain are not just visiting celebrities to this area. They are very well known locals. For many years they have been very close friends and family to both myself and G-Vegas magazine. I have had the pleasure of working for them as a merchandise girl for a very long time, and consider myself a close friend. I have traveled to countless shows up and down the east coast in rain, sleet, and snow. I’ve traveled day and night with little to no sleep. Anything they have ever needed I’ve been there. We collaborated with Studio B on a GVegas Christmas Album which had a variety of local bands do their own renditions of Christmas re-mixes, as well as, had the G-Vegas Girls do a rendition of “Santa Baby”. Pantana Bobs was a place you could always find the guys! At Least once a month they would featured a show. It is crazy to think that just over a few years ago the same guys I would share a back seat of a cab with now pack out Arenas. I couldn’t be more proud If I tried! However, it was not an easy road to fame, that’s for sure. They fought it every inch of the way. After their September 21, 2010 show, Josh and Barry were packing gear inside of the venue while Matt and Scott were outside loading their RV. Two armed men knocked on the door. The man put a gun to Matt’s head and demanded money. Shots were fired. Scott, who possessed a concealed weapons license, fired back. One of the gunmen shot at Scott, who defended himself, and was shot three times. One of the bullets hit Scott’s femoral artery causing him to nearly bleed to death. The doctors gave him a five percent chance to live. Scott was hospitalized in Charlotte, NC for 35 days - 10 of which he spent in a coma. The gunman who shot Scott lost his life. News of the shooting spread like wildfire and the local news stations carried weekly reports on Scott’s progress. There were multiple charity benefits at different clubs across the East coast to assist in Scott’s recovery and medical bills. Scott luckily has made a full recovery in the last five years. Country fans voted the band’s debut single, “Musta Had A Good Time,” #1 for 4 consecutive weeks on SiriusXM’s The Highway “Hot 30 LIVE” countdown, and the song became a Top 40 hit on mainstream country radio. Parmalee also made history when its multi-week #1 smash hit “Carolina” made the longest climbing single by a duo or group in the 24-year history of the Billboard Country Airplay Chart. Parmalee was also the first multimember Country act to garner a #1 single on both the Billboard Country Airplay and Mediabase/ Country Aircheck charts since Florida Georgia Line. “Carolina” was recently certified GOLD (for over 500,000 in sales) by the RIAA. Recently Barry Knox and GVM | 17
his Long time girlfriend recently got engaged. “We’re getting hitched!! Kristin Joyner has completely changed my life. She’s the coolest smartest most badass girl I’ve ever met. I love you KJ!” quoted by Barry The wedding date has been set for Oct. 15, 2016 Saturday, November 21 is your chance for Carolina Homecoming! The Boys will return to their alma mater to pack Minges Coliseum with 8,000 of their closest friends, family, and die-hard fans who have supported them from the very beginning. MEMBERSHIP REQUIRED
Anyone who frequents downtown could not have helped but notice recently, the throngs of people waiting in line at the clubs, to fill out membership applications. Most people, prior to now, were unaware that any business selling liquor by the drink in North Carolina, that does not meet the criteria for being a restaurant, must be a private club. Those who have been waiting in the lines are now painfully aware, and the clubs are being sorely reminded. Liquor by the drink was first adopted in North Carolina in 1978. At that time, if an establishment’s sales were at least 50% food, it was classified as a restaurant and liquor sales were permitted. All other establishments, not serving food, were required to be private clubs. A 30 day waiting period was required before memberships were confirmed. Over the years, those standards have been relaxed. Restaurants may now have up to 70% of sales in alcohol and private clubs may issue memberships with no waiting period. Until recently, the membership requirements for private clubs were often overlooked for what were considered more important enforcement goals. Functionally, the private club requirement was relegated to a revenue tool. Most private clubs could ignore the requirement and expect to be cited and fined no more than once a year. Enforcement agencies like the state ALE (alcohol law enforcement) and county ABC (alcohol beverage control) typically devoted most of their resources to underage drinking enforcement and untaxed liquor (moonshine) abatement. In 2012, Pat McCrory was elected governor. His appointment of former lieutenant governor Jim Gardner has wrought changes in the status quo, if not the actual requirements, for bars and restaurants. A new fervor for enforcement of private club regulations has gripped both state and county agencies under Gardner’s direction, presumably under the assumption that a greater specific accounting of a club’s customer base will deter underage consumption. This author’s scope and experience is limited,
GVM | 19
but as far as Greenville is concerned, it seems nothing could be further from the truth. The state of North Carolina is now in the strange position of paying, full time, a statewide team of police (ALE), to rigorously enforce the policy of LEGAL, ABOVE 21 patrons being catalogued, meanwhile neglecting the quite worthy goal of preventing consumption of alcohol by minors through enforcement. To add insult to injury, due to the loosening of the waiting period for membership in these clubs, patrons are allowed to fill out an application and receive a membership card, immediately becoming members. Although clubs are required to keep a roster of current membership, they could technically throw all applications away each night and create instant members all over again the next night and still be in compliance. The entire policy is oxymoronic and belies a cynical approach to the entire beverage industry. Operators of private clubs are routinely treated as all but criminals, assumed to be corrupt, dishonest and immoral. Conversely, restaurateurs are noble, hardworking people who only want to cater to the public. The truth is never that simple. This author has known many fine people who operated private clubs, as well as many a scoundrel that ran a restaurant. And vice versa. And a whole range of characters in between. There are private clubs in Greenville that have NEVER had an underage drinking violation. There are restaurants here that are serial offenders of the law, obviously needing little more than peach fuzz on the upper lip as rationale for serving. It is my hope that Governor McCrory, Commissioner Gardner and the North Carolina legislature will revisit ABC regulations in our state, and realize that a more worthy goal of enforcement would be the prevention of underage drinking, and not the blanketing of BARS and NIGHTCLUBS and their LEGAL PATRONS in bureaucratic RED TAPE.

5 Ways to Reenergize
Your Semester BY ANTONIO JACKSON You came into the school year motivated, focused and prepared to take on the world. Now we’re more than halfway through the semester. You’re passing out in that 8AM class, engulfing rice bowls from Panda Express every other day and you MIGHT just have an itch to tell your friends “LEAVE ME ALONE!”
Take a breath. Here are 5 Ways to Reenergize Your Semester!
• CHANGE SEATS IN CLASS
Perspective is everything. Even myself who prefers to sit in the front of the class found myself staring through the professor, trying SO hard to focus in that 9:30AM Finance lecture. Not hearing a damn thing the professor is saying. Now I sit in the very back. Ironically, that change in perspective has helped me be more attentive in class. Not to mention, at the end of class I get out the door a little bit quicker.
• SCHEDULE IN SOCIAL EVENTS
Humans are pretty weird. Somehow we can feed off the energy of others around us. Downtown twice, three, four times a week
GVM | 21
getting repetitive? Try a new crowd: Chill at the bar at Crossbones and enjoy the live music performances. Those small trifolds on the dining hall tables? Read them! They actually have events! (Wow…) Find something that sounds interesting to you and just jump into it! In life, initiative is an agent of change.
• CHANGE YOUR EATING HABITS
Panda Express is addicting. Chik-fil-A? Even moreso. But both are greasy and fattening as hell. There’s no better way to motivate better decision-making in your life than WILLINGLY getting that grilled chicken over a burger. Or snacking on an apple instead of that Hot Fudge Sundae Poptart. Do better. Small changes make big impacts.
• RENT-A-BIKE
Again, perspective is everything. ECU pro-
vides a bike rental service for students. Not only does a bicycle change the entire pace of your day, but it’s a heart-healthy activity too! And let’s be real: You need to start preparing for that summer beach trip NOW.
• TAKE TIME FOR YOURSELF
Between classes, trying to maintain or improve that GPA, friends, and giving time to all those organizations, sometimes we forget to give time to ourselves. Complete and utter selfishness. Like to paint? Buy some cheap paint and tools from Dowdy and go to town! Or maybe take that bike you rented and hit the Greenville Greenway. Afterwards, drop by the Scullery on Evans and try a milkshake. Enjoy a solo movie at Hendrix. Whatever you do, just make sure you FIND YOUR PEACE. #KTGA Keep the Grind Alive.
