Narcos and The Great American Obsession BY NATHAN J. BLACK
After binge watching the Netflix original, Narcos, I realized two things: one: Breaking Bad’s, Walter White, could never have done things on television that Pablo Escobar did in real life. Everyone would’ve called “b/s” and stopped watching. Fact is stranger than fiction. Two: America is obsessed with drug dealers. Much like Bonnie and Clyde’s bank robbing spree of their era, drug dealers in our modern time have almost a revered status. Often enough, in comics or in movies, there is seldom a need to explain who is the bad guy and who is the good guy in the story. Bad guys do and sell drugs, and good guys stop them, right? Isn’t that how the D.A.R.E. program came across? So why is it that so many drug dealers become the focus of stories spun in sympathy of? This romanticized notion that these are just simply hard working people, pushed to the extreme and in turn descend into some a dark journey from which most people would either crumble and lose their job or get divorced, or some pairing of the two, appears to be the crux of most of these characters. We almost applaud drug dealers nowadays as if their ingenuity toward starting a criminal empire were some kind of three option on the six-year plan should everything else fail. The strange thing is, this sounds like a story we have heard before, the kind of story writers concoct for TV to make their villains larger than life and bring some weight to their presence. But in Escobar’s case, the devilish truth is that it is all (mostly) true. Narcos, the new netflix original, captures that addictive essence with the same divining rod it has had lately to find top-notch programing. Narcos follows the DEA agent, Steve Murphy (Boyd Holbrook), who is tracking Escobar. The story is narrated, a la Goodfellas style, with Murphy giving the insider information on how and what they found tracking Pablo. Starting off in the mean streets of Miami, where Pablo’s drugs first
GVM | 7
started reaching the US, Murphy retells his accounts of tracking the elusive El Patron (Escobar) all the way from stateside to the sunny, green hills of Columbia where his product originated. Murphy goes from straight-laced cop to furious, hardboiled and out for blood. This arc is somewhat captivating to see, but what really sells Narcos is Wagner Moura’s portrayal of Escobar, himself, who in many regards was like the King Arthur of drug trafficking. Moura’s performance lives up to every bit of hype and tall-tale old news reports and documentaries have given on the subject. Dynamite charisma, chilling viciousness, and all the wrappings of an ordinary family man somehow packaged in as well. Escobar appears a version of Walter White no one would’ve believed, a man who runs his drug empire and somehow keeps all his other pieces in check: family life, wife, mistress, friends, competition, the police off his back, etc. Did we mention that this is based on a true story, too? Ok. We did. The downside to this show comes only in people’s lack of attention, as most viewers will have to read subtitles because a good portion of the show is in spanish, but this is a complaint I spit at because anything worth your attention will demand it, and so this does just that. For spanish speakers though, some have complained about accents and people not sounding like they are from the countries they attest to being from--this is a valid complaint and worth looking into. Other than this, I find Narcos to be another great success for Netflix and rank it among shows like Orange is the New Black and Daredevil. I am careful to say though that it is not perfect as real history doesn’t always play out the way we often want stories to, but given one arm tied behind their back with following the true account and only minor embellishment used, Narcos is a terrific show despite this.

TV
But coming back to a previous suggestion, what does Narcos say about our obsession with drug dealers? Since the 60s, the drug culture has exploded with heroes and figures that express the need to press an idea that to do drugs is a rite of passage, even a necessary one on the way to self-discovery (consider such movies as Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Dazed and Confused, The Basketball Diaries, Requiem for a Dream, etc.) while at the same time, contradicts itself by showing the juxtaposition of gang life interwoven in such tales. From historical stories that show American entrepreneurship at work in movies like the Godfather series and Goodfellas. To self-indulgent, anti-heroes like Scarface or Patrick Bateman in American Psycho. Drug culture draws our attention much like horror films with what we assume to be repulsion (so bad I can’t look away), but beneath this, it almost appears to be an escape into fantasy. The fantasy being: what if the rules didn’t apply to me? What would I do? Drug culture presses this question and calls to our inter-outlaw or at least causes us to ask, who is really stronger, the lawmakers or the lawbreakers? And so Narcos follows the same trend. You decide. Overall grade: -A To contact me, email nblack252@gmail.com

HEALTH
Does Vitamin C protect against the common cold? The common cold is a syndrome that is familiar to most of us. Cough, runny nose, sneezing, sore throat, and general malaise keep millions out of school and work every year. It is a viral illness that is not unique to any particular virus, but may be caused by numerous viral infections, rhinovirus being the most common. Although there is no definitive cure available for the common cold, many companies have capitalized on the annoyance of cold symptoms by marketing products that they claim may prevent or shorten the duration of the cold. One key ingredient that is often advertised as both protective and therapeutic for colds is Vitamin C, a remedy which has been studied for decades and popularized by Nobel laureate Linus Pauling. Vitamin C, or ascorbic acid as it is also known, is vital to many processes in the body. Those who promote the use of these products cite Vitamin C’s antioxidant properties and its ability to help the body’s immune system fight infections. It is relatively cheap as a supplement and even at high doses has few adverse effects. In many animal studies, Vitamin C has been found to reduce the incidence and severity of infection. Some have advocated that a daily supplement of Vitamin C may help prevent colds in humans. A recent review of research on the effects of Vitamin C for prevention of the common cold in humans has not found it to be so benefi-
cial. People taking regular supplements of Vitamin C were just as likely to catch a cold as those who did not. It has, however, been shown that people who do get the cold and take regular Vitamin C supplements tend to experience a shorter duration of the cold. However, this same effect has not been reliably replicated when Vitamin C is given therapeutically for patients with colds. Further research must be done to conclusively study these effects. There is one subset of the population, however, in which low dose Vitamin C does decrease the incidence of colds, and that is those who participate in extreme physical exercise such as marathon runners. In this population, Vitamin C nearly halves the incidence of colds. In summary, regular vitamin C supplements will not keep you from getting the cold unless you are a rather serious athlete. Additionally, Vitamin C has not been proven to have a therapeutic effect on those who already have a cold. However, taking regular Vitamin C may shorten the duration of your illness if you do catch a cold. In any case, Vitamin C is a relatively low cost and benign supplement that may provide some benefit to those hoping to get through cold season with fewer sick days. Frequent hand washing and avoiding sick contacts are more reliable preventative measure for avoiding colds

NUMBERS NEVER LIE...
OR DO THEY? BY RANDY MOORE
Sooner or later in any sexual relationship, someone pops the question. “So, how many people have you slept with?” Like most of love’s big questions, this one requires a lot of thought and consideration. It’s such a big question, in fact, it’s acquired its own body of scaientific research. According to a recent study from the University of Alberta, Canada, men tend to overestimate the number of sexual partners they’ve had. Women, on the other hand, were more likely to say they knew exactly and reported a lower number (6.2, compared to men’s 11.9). Of course, that’s what you’d tell a scientist. When you’re all cuddled up, après-sex (and honestly, isn’t that when this conversation seems to take place the most?), and your beloved looks at you all lovey-dovey and asks for your magic number, we’re all - men and women alike - less likely to give a straight answer. Prior experience tells us that there is no good answer. Too high a number and you look indiscriminate. Too low and
GVM | 11
you look prudish or inexperienced. The University of Alberta survey shows that men are more likely to make a rough approximation of lovers, while women tend to think about individual encounters. In the bedroom, though, men and women seem to take a different calculation. First, you can safely deduct any partner whose name you can’t remember. Go ahead and subtract any one-night stands or meaningless encounters. Too drunk too remember much? Take that one away, too. Particularly bad sex can be ignored, too. And make sure you don’t count the same lover more than once. If you hooked up again after five years apart, you still only count it once. Likewise, if your number is on the low side, you should be able to tack on almost-encounters or any could-have-been lovers. (Purely fictional ones should be ignored.) Our own research - from the School of Hard Knocks suggests that the correct answer is between four and ten. How many have we been with, you ask? We take the fifth.

Since I’ve moved to cary I’v been wroking towards new goals. I transfered to another dollar tree after working with them for four years. There an assistant manager, Ms. Freeman, took me under her wing. She lead and encouraged me into a new direction. From there my goal was to become assistant manager. Every night I worked with Ms. Freeman she would give me tips and pointers on what I can do to improve my work. I had to transfer to a different dollar tree to get the position as assistant manager. I trained for two weeks and caught on pretty easliy. My first day running the store alone was Monday 21,2015. The first day was a little rough but it gets easier everyday. I’ve changed my major to personal training. I figured it’s what I love to do and I do it often so why not make a career out of it. I transfered from Pitt to Wake Tech. I havent started classes yet but I will be starting in the spring. Before starting my classes I got certfied in CPR because that is a requirement for the profession.

While I’m waiting to start college classes I’m currently taking an online class in business and management. Taking that class will help me with my current job and personal training in the future. With every day im taking one step closer to my goals. Being apart of G-Vegas Magazine has been a positive experience for me and has affected my life in a positive way. I’v been working with G-Vegas Magazine for about 3 years now and I’ve met a lot of people and made a few friends. I love working with them because I’m around people who care and are just trying to have a good time with what they do. I enjoy assisting with events because it’s not all work and I’m encouraged to have a little bit of play time. The same goes for have being an Emerald of the city, there has been nothing but positve experiences for me. It opened up a new door and gave me an opportinity to do something I’v never done before.

EMERALDS OF THE CITY WHERE THEY ARE NOW STEPHANIE FISHER
It has been nearly half a decade since my debut as a GVegas Girl. Involvement with the company truly assisted in many of the achievements I’ve been fortunate to make. Shortly after I was a GVegas Calendar Girl, I became pregnant with my beautiful daughter, Giavanna. Young and confused, I wanted to do the best thing for my child. As a result, I immersed myself in scholastics. Being told that success coincides with education, that appeared to be the appropriate path. Ultimately, I received my Masters from Stony Brook University in NY when my daughter was one. I worked as a Hooters Girl and Tilted Kilt Girl while seeking out a professional job. To put it lightly, it was like tossing salt in my eyeball. During the time, I had also begun to compete again. The thrill of being on stage was something that had never left. It was around that time that I decided, though I love science, I will be a performer until employment is no longer available. Shortly after that epiphany, agencies were offering representation left and right. It was nothing short of a miracle. Throughout the time that I was filming and modeling, my mom would often accompany me both as a sitter and a support system. A year ago in August, I was working as a bartender at Full Throttle Saloon. On a fluke, my mom had decided to stay home in NY. During the end of the rally, I received a devastating call, my 50 year old mother had died suddenly of a heart attack. Speaking to her the night before, it was the both horrific and surreal. Symptoms that had been disregarded as minor everyday occurrences, ultimately were due to her heart deteriorating. From that point on,
GVM | 25
Heart Disease Prevention has been an enormous platform of mine. As of today, I am currently a full-time actress and model. I recently moved from commercial work to TV and film. In January, we will begin filming a show called Lockwood. It is my first supporting role, and I’ll be playing the highschool mean girl Jordin Myers. The show is essentially a cross between Pretty Little Liars and 90210. The vast majority of my work involves promotional modeling, a skill acquired as a GVegas Girl. As a promotional model, not only are you there to promote a brand, but you’re there to promote a bond amongst the other girls. Many of the bonds created by GVegas, still exist today. GVegas also had an enormous role in my ability to compete and speak on stage. It taught me confidence and poise, two of the main components necessary in any competition. I’ve held various titles throughout the years and am the reigning Ms. New York City US. Now that I’m working consistently, my competition days are coming to a close. If anyone is thinking about branching out into the competition world, GVegas is a fantastic stepping stone.

Halloween Fun Facts - Because the movie Halloween (1978) was on such a tight budget, they had to use the cheapest mask they could find for the character Michael Meyers, which turned out to be a William Shatner Star Trek mask. Shatner initially didn’t know the mask was in his likeness, but when he found out years later, he said he was honored.
- Halloween is the second highest grossing commercial holiday after Christmas.
According to Irish legend, Jack O’Lanterns are named after a stingy man named Jack who, because he tricked the devil several times, was forbidden entrance into both heaven and hell. He was condemned to wander the Earth, waving his lantern to lead people away from their paths. The word “witch” comes from the Old English wicce, meaning “wise woman.” In fact, wiccan were highly respected people at one time. According to popular belief, witches held one of their two main meetings, or sabbats, on Halloween night.
