NORTH CAROLINA AREA

COUNCIL AWARDS Winterville, NC – At this year’s North Carolina Area Council, Boys & Girls Clubs of Pitt County were awarded five out of nine possible awards. These awards include: Council Member of the Year, Steve Stephenson of Ward and Smith, P.A.; Board Team of the Year; CARE (Children Are Reason for Excellence), Goodwill Community Foundation; Health & Life Skills, SMART Girls 2.0; and The Arts, the Blue Door Exhibit. The awards were determined by a panel of local and national representatives. Donyell “DJ” Jones, Vice President of Operations at Boys & Girls Clubs, was highly satisfied with the recognition given at the North Carolina Area Council. With an increase of four awards since last year’s ceremony, Jones exclaimed that the awards validate the hard work and dedication of the Board of Directors’ and Club leadership. He has high hopes for next year’s

award ceremony.

Jones explained that the Board Team of the Year Award was the most appreciated out of the five awards won. He gratefully noted the significance of the other four awards, but this award highlighted the Boys & Girls Clubs’ team oriented goals for success. Dancing Doctors and

The Holiday Band Want to enjoy a night of festive celebration with The Holiday Band? The Brody School of Medicine Class of 2017 Medical Student Council is announcing an evening to remember, with part of the proceeds to benefit Riley’s Army. Put on your dancing shoes and join us on Friday, November 21st from 6-10pm at the Greenville Hilton for a night you will not want to miss! Come dance the night away with the incredible Holiday Band, show your support at the silent auction, take your chances at raffle drawings, and indulge in food and beverages galore! Brody School of Medicine’s Class of 2017 MSC is devoted to serving the wonderful population of eastern North Carolina. The Brody School of Medicine was founded upon a threefold mission: (1) to increase the supply of primary care physicians to serve our state, (2) to improve the health status of citizens in eastern North Carolina, and (3) to enhance the access of minority and disadvantaged students to a medical education. With those three pillars as our beacon and guide, the MSC tries to keep that mission alive within and outside of the

classroom. The Brody MSC is made up of representatives from each of the current classes at the Brody School of Medicine, as well as faculty advisors. We meet monthly to discuss ongoing issues at the school and to plan events for the student body. We strive to represent the views of the majority of students at every level of our four-year education. It was unanimously decided that we, as the Class of 2017 MSC, should find a local nonprofit to support and stand behind. Our hope in partnering with Riley’s Army is that the second pillar of Brody’s threefold mission will be upheld within the pediatric cancer community of eastern NC. Riley’s Army (RA) supports children with cancer and their families in eastern NC. They offer support in the hospital, by providing meals for the children and their families and having volunteers sit with the children for respite care, offering comfort and support. They also

find that the children and their families’ needs change as they continue to fight their battle with cancer. Providing immediate family support for financial burdens and essential needs is important to RA. Being a volunteer-based organization, they rely heavily on volunteers and the community to provide for these children’s needs. They currently serve 130 children and their families. Limited number of tickets available at the door on Nov 21st. Advance tickets encouraged. To purchase tickets, go to the following website: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/rileysarmy-dancing-doctors-the-holiday-bandtickets-13023809565 Or contact Kimber Stone via email at Kimber@rileysarmy.com or call 252-4128191.

Downtown Greenville Goes “Green”For Charity BY ARRAN WRIGHT

On a beautiful Saturday morning dozens of people turned downtown Greenville into their own personal golf course in order to raise money for The Dream Factory charity organization. Almost every bar and restaurant in the immediate downtown area opened its doors during the day to the multitude of “golfers” walking the streets. Most places donated appetizers or had special drink prices for the participants, which brought the dowtown area together to promote this amazing charity. The Dream Factory grants dreams to chronically or critically ill children between the ages of three and eighteen. This was the first Putt for Dreams event that took place in Greenville, and due to the success of the event, it will now be hosted annually. Kicking the day off at Christy’s, everyone was pleased to sit and enjoy a few beverages before heading toward 5th St. to the various putting greens set up at each location. Most places made their own creative putting greens. I was most impressed by Mac’s Billiards. Their location was a little tricky, making their golfers go through a few obstacles to sink their putt including bouncing the ball off of an official NASCAR tire that they had set up. Other locations that participated walked around to compare their handiwork. Some of these locations included: 519, 5th St. Distillery, Pantana Bob’s, Pita Pit, Fitzgerald’s, Peasant’s, Winslow’s, Tipsy Teapot, and others. The charity was set up so that each four person team paid $100 for a day of golfing and

GVM | 13

fun. Some groups wore matching t-shirts, such as the team from Wimpies in Winterville. Some teams went all out and dressed in their best impression of a golfer. Not everyone had a team ready to go when they arrived. One man in particular joined a three man team in order to play and to give his time and money to an admirable charity. One team in particular was not only participating in Putt For Dreams, but was promoting their own charity. The local BMX riders got together in support of their fallen friend Frankie Leggens wearing shirts that said “Frankie Says Ride”. Donations can be made to help support his family. Not everyone had a team ready to go when they arrived. One man in particular joined a three man team in order to play and to give his time and money to an admirable charity. The beautiful Sigma girls also offered their services to volunteer for this event. They spent their day keeping score and enjoying the hilarity of the golfers trying to sink a hole in one. A very big “thank you” to them for all that they did to help the event run smoothly. Thank you to Molly Cashion for bringing this awesome event to Greenville and allowing GVEGAS Magazine to be a part of it. I had an amazing time. How to Stay Fit on the College Meal Plan & Avoid the Freshman Fifteen BY ROY HOPKINS

College is a time for expanding minds, expanding knowledge and -- for many students -- expanding waistlines. The “freshman 15” is no myth: stressful lifestyles, latenight study snacks, lack of exercise and high-calorie dorm food leave plenty of fledgling undergrads battling the bulge. Although freshman weight gain is common, it isn’t inevitable. By choosing your foods and activities wisely, you can end your first college year as slim as you started.

Rule 1

Rule 4

Rule 2

Rule 5

Center your meals on low-calorie foods like fruit, salads, lean protein and grains; just because you’re away from home doesn’t mean you can shun the vegetables. Most dining halls offer a mix of greasy, high-fat fare and healthier food options; so choose the latter whenever possible. An occasional night of pizza won’t spell disaster for your weight, but routinely indulging in high-calorie foods will. Monitor your portion sizes. Many college meal plans offer large meals and “all you can eat” menu options, which are prime opportunities to overeat. Pay attention to your hunger and fullness signals, and stop eating when you’re satisfied -- not necessarily when your plate is clean.

Rule 3

Limit your use of high-calorie condiments and toppings such as butter, margarine, mayonnaise, oil, full-fat salad dressings, peanut butter, gravy, cream cheese and sour cream. These items can quickly increase the calorie content of your meals, gradually leading to weight gain.

Eat slowly and allow plenty of time for each meal. According to the UCLA Student Nutrition Action Committee, it can take up to 20 minutes before “fullness” signals reach your brain when eating -making it hard to gauge your true hunger when you scarf down a plate of food right before class. Don’t eat in a rush, and take the time to savor each bite that hits your tongue. Avoid skipping meals -- especially breakfast. Ironically, missing meals can cause you to become ravenous later on, leading to poor food choices and overeating. Adhering to a consistent eating schedule will keep your appetite at an even keel and make it easier to choose healthy menu items.

Rule 6

Choose low-calorie beverages. Food isn’t the only weight-raising culprit to watch out for: excess calories can also creep into your diet via sodas, smoothies, milkshakes, fruit juice and sweetened coffee. Limit your intake of caloric drinks and choose water, tea or diet beverages when possible.

Roy Hopkins, (Owner/Operator & ECU Alumni 06’) Personal & Athletic Trainer, Boot Camp and Small Group Trainer Specialist 1913 E. Firetower Suite E Greenville NC 27858

252.353.7324 • www.ProFitness24-7.com GVM | 17

Rule 7

Participate in physical activities such as jogging, swimming, team sports or weight training. Even when consuming a healthy diet, staying active is critical for preventing the pounds from sliding on -- and, unlike high school, college doesn’t always include structured activity times like PE. If the weather is too inclement for outdoor activities, most college campuses have gyms or athletic facilities available for student use.

Warnings

Along with being high in calories, alcohol can impair your judgment, arouse hunger and encourage you to make poor food choices. Avoid excessive drinking to curb alcohol-related weight gain. If you feel yourself developing an unhealthy relationship with food -- such as by severely dieting or eating for emotional reasons -- consider contacting a school psychologist or counselor.

Tips

To prepare for late-night study sessions, keep your dorm room’s mini-fridge stocked with healthy snacks -- such as vegetables with hummus, low-fat yogurt and fruit. This ensures you won’t have to make a midnight run to a vending machine or fast-food joint.

East Carolina Massage GVM GAMES LIFE

BY BAREFOOT WADE

So tell me...who doesn’t love a good massage?!?!?!? I mean a real, legit, hour long therapeutic massage from a license proffesional. Chances are you’ve always wanted one but felt that it was just to frivolus for a college students budget. Fortunatly for you, East Carolina Massage just opened there doors here in Greenville.

They are offering a professional, hour long therapeutic massage for $40. And if Reflexology is more your thing, they offer it for only $20. I don’t know about you, but I can think of plenty of things I wasted 20 bucks on that didn’t even bring me close to the chilled out state of mind I was in when I stopped by for a massage last week. Besides the obvious relaxation benifits; A proper massage is great for circulation,

anxiety, back pain, carpul tunnel (That’s me!), releasing natural endorphines, cramping, migrain headache’s, joint flexibility, and the list really goes on and on. It’s even great for expecting mothers! Not only is the price phenomenal, but the location is excellent as well. It’s located with in walking distance from the University at 210 South Washington which is just after the bars, but before the riverwalk park. If you’d like to make an appointment you can do so 7 days a week by calling 252-413-0021. If you’d rather just hit them up online you can also do that at www.eastcarolinamassage.abmp.com. So give them a call and swing on by.... you’re body will thank you later for it and your debit card won’t complain to much.

GVM GAMES LIFE

How To Survive

Thanksgiving BY RANDY MOORE

Thanksgiving is upon us, and it’s my favorite holiday. There’s food, family, and a country-wide excuse to lounge on couches. But it isn’t all fun and games on Turkey Day, and I’m here to guide you through the pitfalls you may walk into as a college student.

1. DRINKING IS A TRAP

One of the prime joys of coming back from college is the knowledge that now you can drink good stuff, all on your parents dime. A glass of wine or three and all the Sam Adam’s Seasonal you can stomach. It warms you up, makes family more fun, and it’s tradition. What could be better? The thing every college student forgets though is the differences of cultural drinking. In college, it’s acceptable to drink in bulk and quickly but at home, not so much. There are much fewer keg-stands in suburban homes. Similarly, everyone thinks your fourteen. Sorry, but it’s true. Your older siblings, parents, uncles, aunts, grandparents; all of them think you’re younger than you are. So while they’ll encourage you to drink and crack a beer with them, be careful not to let one or two slip to five or six like it would in college: even in this celebratory atmosphere, different non-college standards apply and suddenly it’s “inappropriate” to chug the wine and rap-battle your uncle. Squares.

GVM | 21

2. AVOID THE CLASSIC PITFALLS

Do not talk to your parents about politics. Do not try to explain to them how majoring in “Rap Battles” is a solid post-college plan. Do not get caught smoking weed before thanksgiving so you can eat as much as possible and then you’re just giggling at the cranberry sauce. Instead, make it easy on yourself and keep it simple: family, food, couches.

3. GET FRESH AIR

You will go stir crazy. This isn’t a “maybe” type deal. Even if you don’t notice it until you’re scratching at the windows, you’ll end up feeling cooped. It’s inevitable. So go out for walks and get fresh air, fresh blood, and different people and things to do than sitting with family digesting. That’s fine for a little while but around hour three you start to feel like you’re decomposing.

4. BE PREPARED.

When it comes to the holidays, even if you enjoy them, there are downsides. Being with your family can be stressful for everyone. As a younger sibling, you may resent being thrust into the child-role again. As an older sibling, you might get tired of being held to an unfair standard as a model for your younger ones. As a middle sibling you may be resentful because, ha ha, you’re the middle sibling. Either way, you may experience stress and- gulp- feelings. Relax, accept them, and move on. Just don’t be caught off-guard.

5. HAVE FUN

It’s not about lists, worries, or anxieties in the end. It’s Thanksgiving. Have the extra piece of pie. Nap. Mix some whiskey with apple cider. Enjoy. It’s one of the prime joys in life to just decompress from all the stresses of college life and to recenter yourself fully. Do it and vibe it out.

CPW’s Invites You To Celebrate 19 Years GVM

TASTE

CPW’s, a local eatery, is coming upon 19 years and want to show their gratitude for their customers by offering amazing deals in the month of November. Nineteen is the theme, and CPW’s makes the most of it. Starting November 6th, for nineteen days, please join them in their celebration all while enjoying exquisite cuisine. This is a neighborhood bistro with Italian roots, but the menu features many other culinary genres. For those who haven’t been there, the atmosphere is beautiful and relaxing, and the food is divine. While CPW’s began when founders Todd McGregor and Ralph Walton opened a pizza-by-the-slice joint in 1995, the level of growth since then has been astounding. They expanded and added a bar and in 2007 became a restaurant, bistro, and bakery bringing an eclectic style to a once small pizza bar. Drew, restaurant manager, is excited to celebrate by bringing in

new customers and offering up his appreciation to the restaurants loyal customers. WHY THANKSGIVING?

Thanksgiving at Plymouth In September 1620, a small ship called the Mayflower left Plymouth, England, carrying 102 passengers—an assortment of religious separatists seeking a new home where they could freely practice their faith and other individuals lured by the promise of prosperity and land ownership in the New World. After a treacherous and uncomfortable crossing that lasted 66 days, they dropped anchor near the tip of Cape Cod, far north of their intended destination at the mouth of the Hudson River. One month later, the Mayflower crossed Massachusetts Bay, where the Pilgrims, as they are now commonly known, began the work of establishing a village at Plymouth. Throughout that first brutal winter, most of the colonists remained on board the ship, where they suffered from exposure, scurvy and outbreaks of contagious disease. Only half of the Mayflower’s original passengers and crew lived to see their first New England spring. In March, the remaining set-

tlers moved ashore, where they received an astonishing visit from an Abenaki Indian who greeted them in English. Several days later, he returned with another Native American, Squanto, a member of the Pawtuxet tribe who had been kidnapped by an English sea captain and sold into slavery before escaping to London and returning to his homeland on an exploratory expedition. Squanto taught the Pilgrims, weakened by malnutrition and illness, how to cultivate corn, extract sap from maple trees, catch fish in the rivers and avoid poisonous plants. He also helped the settlers forge an alliance with the Wampanoag, a local tribe, which would endure for more than 50 years and tragically remains one of the sole examples of harmony between European colonists and Native Americans. In November 1621, after the Pilgrims’ first corn harvest proved successful, Governor William Bradford organized a celebratory feast and invited a group of the fledgling colony’s Native American allies, including

the Wampanoag chief Massasoit. Now remembered as American’s “first Thanksgiving”—although the Pilgrims themselves may not have used the term at the time— the festival lasted for three days. While no record exists of the historic banquet’s exact menu, the Pilgrim chronicler Edward Winslow wrote in his journal that Governor Bradford sent four men on a “fowling” mission in preparation for the event, and that the Wampanoag guests arrived bearing five deer. Historians have suggested that many of the dishes were likely prepared using traditional Native American spices and cooking methods. Because the Pilgrims had no oven and the Mayflower’s sugar supply had dwindled by the fall of 1621, the meal did not feature pies, cakes or other desserts, which have become a hallmark of contemporary celebrations.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

GVM GAMES LIFE

5 Ways to Reenergize Your Semester BY ANTONIO JACKSON

You came into the school year motivated, focused

and prepared to take on the world. Now we’re more than halfway through the semester. You’re passing out in that 8AM class, engulfing rice bowls from Panda Express every other day and you MIGHT just have an itch to tell your friends “LEAVE ME ALONE!” Take a breath. Here are 5 Ways to Reenergize Your Semester! • CHANGE SEATS IN CLASS Perspective is everything. Even myself who prefers to sit in the front of the class found myself staring through the professor, trying SO hard to focus in that 9:30AM Finance lecture. Not hearing a damn thing the professor is saying. Now I sit in the very back. Ironically, that change in perspective has helped me be more attentive in class. Not to mention, at the end of class I get out the door a little bit quicker. • SCHEDULE IN SOCIAL EVENTS Humans are pretty weird. Somehow we can feed off the energy of others around us. Downtown twice, three, four times a week getting repetitive? Try a new crowd: Chill at the bar at Peas-

ant’s pub on Thursdays and enjoy the live music performances. Those small trifolds on the dining hall tables? Read them! They actually have events! (Wow…) Find something that sounds interesting to you and just jump into it! In life, initiative is an agent of change. • CHANGE YOUR EATING HABITS Panda Express is addicting. Chik-fil-A? Even moreso. But both are greasy and fattening as hell. There’s no better way to motivate better decision-making in your life than WILLINGLY getting that grilled chicken over a burger. Or snacking on an apple instead of that Hot Fudge Sundae Poptart. Do better. Small changes make big impacts. • RENT-A-BIKE Again, perspective is everything. ECU provides a bike rental service for students. Not only does a bicycle change the entire pace of your day, but it’s a heart-healthy activ-

ity too! And let’s be real: You need to start preparing for that summer beach trip NOW. • TAKE TIME FOR YOURSELF Between classes, trying to maintain or improve that GPA, friends, and giving time to all those organizations, sometimes we forget to give time to ourselves. Complete and utter selfishness. Like to paint? Buy some cheap paint and tools from Dowdy and go to town! Or maybe take that bike you rented and hit the Greenville Greenway. Afterwards, drop by the Scullery on Evans and try a milkshake. Enjoy a solo movie at Hendrix. Whatever you do, just make sure you FIND YOUR PEACE. #KTGA Keep the Grind Alive.
