LIFE

Trick-or-treating evolved from the ancient Celtic tradition of putting out treats and food to placate spirits who roamed the streets at Samhain, a sacred festival that marked the end of the Celtic calendar year.

- Because the movie Halloween (1978) was on such a tight budget, they had to use the cheapest mask they could find for the character Michael Meyers, which turned out to be a William Shatner Star Trek mask. Shatner initially didn’t know the mask was in his likeness, but when he found out years later, he said he was honored.

- Halloween is the second highest grossing commercial holiday after Christmas.

According to Irish legend, Jack O’Lanterns are named after a stingy man named Jack who, because he tricked the devil several times, was forbidden entrance into both heaven and hell. He was condemned to wander the Earth, waving his lantern to lead people away from their paths. The word “witch” comes from the Old English wicce, meaning “wise woman.” In fact, wiccan were highly respected people at one time. According to popular belief, witches held one of their two main meetings, or sabbats, on Halloween night.

LIFE

The Right Way Rubbing Her

BY RANDY MOORE

Sure, she thinks she’s getting a massage. You need to approach it just is a long version of foreplay (we know - all foreplay is long foreplay) - one that gets your hands sliding over her nude, relaxed, slick body. If you know, you like that sort of thing. Take a deep breath if you’re looking for an evening of slippery fun, you need to understand the proper approach. Giving a massage is just like waxing your car, only you’re indoors, the lights are low, and you’re about to become very, very focused. Oh, and there’s a nude woman involved. 1. Ambiance is key. Turn down the lights, light a few candles, and put on some soft music( And, Dude, thrash metal at low volume is not “soft music”). Invest in a few big soft towels. After she sees al you’ve prepared for her very own sensual experience, there’s a chance she’ll want to skip directly to the post massage activities. Yeah you wish. 2. Invite her to lie on the bed or a table (Sturdy dining table? Yes, the kitchen island? Maybe not. No, on top of the towels. Naked we know. Focus! Put some massage oil or body lotion between your hands and rub them together to warm them.

GVM | 7

3.Use your hands, arms and fingers as you massage, and put your body into it, using your body to power the muscle work will enable you to last longer. Use firm, but gentle strokes, and check with her once in awhile to make sure you’re not rubbing too hard or soft. Begin with the center of her back and work out towards her limbs. Pay attention to the muscles on either side of the spine. Stop thinking about how naked she is. 4. Pay extra attention to her hands and feet. Massaged her palms and fingers, her feet and toes. Give a gentle, slow tug on each finger and each toe. Do not keep asking, “Do you like it when I

do that? I’m pretty good at this, right? Can I lie down with you for just a minute?” 5. A sensitive area is the lower back and hips. Rub slowly, with pressure. She will melt under your hands if you pay extra attention to these areas. You are in the home stretch. Keep your hands above her lower hip line until you can’t and then make yourself stay above for two more minutes. You are earning serious points there, Dude. When it’s time for the massage to end, Work your way back towards the center of her body. Press your hands against her back in a final, finishing gesture. Do not yell “Touchdown” or “Now you do me!” Be gracious and generous, and if you do not let her know that you just experienced one of most grueling inner workouts of your life, you are almost guaranteed to have before you one oily, undressed, already-lying-down, happy woman.

Comic-Con 2014

For many years I have seen the shows and the movies talking about Comic-Con and have wondered what they would be like. No I’m not much of a gamer, but I do love a good comic book when I find them. I also am a fan of anime. Wolverine, Full Metal Alchemist, Green Lantern, Transformers, Thundercats, Ghost in the Shell...just to name a few of what I like. A few years ago I got a chance to see a comic-con outing in Atlanta. I saw so many characters and well designed costumes. Even got a chance to see a comic fight in a restaurant. But I thought it would be amazing to experience that in Greenville.

Well...this month on the 25th, Greenville is having its very first Comic Con and I am totally stoked!! It will be at the Masonic Lodge off of Charles Blvd from 12-7:00 pm. Oh, and tickets are only $5. There will be games, comics, toys, art for sale, food and of course costumes galore of everyone’s favorite characters. I believe that this would be a great start for something that will be held annually. It will definitely be great to see other people who enjoy the comics just as much as I do. It is also a chance to show everyone how talented you are when it comes to costume design. I haven’t decided which character I want to be but I’m sure something will spark between now and October 25th.

For more information hit up Mr. Vance Moore, the brains behind this awesome idea. You can reach him at 252-916-0302. He does wish to make it bigger with each year and it is no telling what will see at this year’s event. Now... go get your costume!!

Gotham:

Before Knight Fall BY NATHAN J. BLACK

With the opening of Gotham we were introduced to the all too familiar scene of the death of the parents of Bruce Wayne. A very powerful and iconic moment in comic history. There are several moments that Gotham takes and throws out ever so casually it would seem. Whether it be the nimble movements of an unnamed girl thief (obviously a young Selina Kyle), or the twitchy nosed movements of a lanky Oswald Cobblepot, Gotham lays on the ‘hey, guess-who-this-is’ rather thickly. There is little to no mystery here, which is odd in a story centered around detectives and criminals, but considering the line between the two is razor thin at this point, nobody needs to hide from anyone. While this works in establishing the dystopian state of things, it works against the grain of building tension or any real sense of guffaw for the audience to feel while the building of characters is going on. What are they looking for? What are they working with? Why does it matter? Sure, we love Bruce Wayne; we feel for the kid losing his parents and all. But why should Jim Gordon care more about this kid’s dead parents than any of the other hundreds murdered or missing because of the crime ridden city that’s going on all around him?

GVM | 11

It’s hard not to take this story more seriously after so much saturation and direction from the Nolan trilogy, and while I appreciate Gotham’s attempts at making a more hard boiled comic book TV show, it still rates somewhere between a really good episode of Law and Order: SVU and a darker version of Smallville. There are many notes from Arrow, also, that this show wants to draw from--probably the most devastating fact for fans to consider: Batman having to draw creativity from Green Arrow. But still the fact remains that many of the subtle nods toward characters we would be familiar with are not so subtle as they should be. It is still too early to tell how Gotham will fair or if the arc of the story will be completely worth wild, but as it stands there are many points that need fine tuning, mostly finding it’s own rhythm rather than relying on the formulas from other DC shows. With a great cast so far and even better settings, Gotham has the pulp feel from the early Keaton/Burton Batman of the 80s and early 90s with a level of blood splatter Nolan wouldn’t even go near. These are definitely the high points of the show. It would be good to see the town get worse and hotter before it gets better. Still, there are a lot of TV cliches to rise above before this bat can soar. Hopefully they will find their way. Final Grade: a generous B+

SOUND

G-VEGAS PRESENTS:

Crowded Streets

If imitation is the most sincere form of flattery, we hope the Dave Matthews Band (DMB) can take a compliment. From Dave Matthews to Jason Mraz to Wes Borland to Chris Brown and others, Virginia has recently rebuilt its reputation for producing high-caliber entertainers. DMB has been a radio and concert arena staple for over a decade. With a sound as maneuverable as theirs, shifting easily from Celtic to jazz to folk-rock to acoustic funk, recreating the experience of a live DMB performance would seem an impossibility. Crowded Streets—the name inspired by DMB’s third studio album — is what you call this Virginia - based sextet. The individuals who form this outstanding tribute are each dedicated to the task of reproducing the unique sonic experience of a live DMB performance. The band has attended numerous concerts and studied all the live footage they can get their hands on. Crowded Streets boasts the same original studio line-up of instrumentation and each musician is as versatile and creative as his DMB counterpart. Gabe Badillo (aka, Gabe Matthews), front man and focal point of Crowded Streets, seems to channel Dave himself during the more lively and energized moments of their performances. Bass and drums trade off with DMB’s trademark, syncopated counterpoint. Guitar solos soar in Tim Reynolds-meets-Warren Haynes fashion. From their spot-on violin and sax solos to their contagious, live-jam chemistry, enough cannot be said of this group’s ability to emulate DMB in all their incarnations. Hearing is believing.

TECH

the good and the bad of the iphone 6 The Good

A bigger, crisp display, improved LTE and Wi-Fi speeds, better camera autofocus, bumped-up storage capacities to 128GB at the top end, and NFC Apple Pay mobile wallet features on the horizon.

The Bad

In early tests, the iPhone 6’s battery doesn’t fare any better than last year’s model. Some Android phones fit an even-larger 5-inch screen into the same size frame. It lacks the optical image stabilization of the bigger, more expensive 6 Plus.

For potential buyers of both phones, here’s how it breaks down: For owners of older iPhones looking to upgrade, these new iPhones are massive leaps in screen size. The 4.7-inch iPhone 6 will probably be more than enough, but the 6 Plus may be downright intimidating unless you’re looking for a mini-tablet. For Android owners who once jumped ship from iOS and want to come back, this is the iPhone generation you’ve been waiting for. It’s the best iPhone since the iPhone 5. Back then, 4G LTE and an improved screen and camera made the difference. This time, a larger screen, a fast processor, NFC with Apple Pay (although likely only that), the additional customization features of iOS 8, and bumped-up storage tiers go a long way to close the feature gap with current top Android phones.

The Bottom Line

The iPhone 6 delivers a bigger screen while remaining easy to handle, with plenty of features to satisfy everyone -- and the promise of Apple Pay on the horizon to potentially sweeten the deal even further.

For iPhone 5S owners or habitual iPhone upgraders, think of the chief advantages as a bigger screen and the potential of Apple Pay. The improved processor, camera, 4G LTE and Wi-Fi speeds, and possible battery-life gains are steps up, but not massive leaps. In other words, if you don’t have a strong desire for the larger screen, you could easily ride your iPhone 5S (running iOS 8) for 12 more months, and wait for the inevitable iPhone 6S and 6S Plus in 2015. For hard-core Android fans, well, there are Android phones that cost less, have higher-resolution screens, boast better battery life, have removable SD card storage, and even removable batteries. You won’t find all of these on an iPhone 6, but this is the most attractive iPhone yet. You can’t have everything in Appleland. source: cnet.com

Trailer Park Boys: Season 8 Recaptures The Magic BY NATHAN J. BLACK *Disclaimer: In no way am I or G-Vegas advocating the use of marijuana or criminal behavior. This article is a review on the television show Trailer Park Boys and is intended for mature readers, audiences, or people in college.* It’s been almost seven years since the last season of Trailer Park Boys, and with only a few movies to fill the void in between, the rumors of another possible season left most fans weary of it ever being made. While many long time fans will be familiar with the show from the early to mid 2000s, newcomers will be either repulsed or enamored with the state of the show. With a very loose over-arcing story to the show, the premise has always been, to put it simply, three best friends trying to grow weed and make a living. Mostly the focus is life in the trailer park done in the, now antiquated, style of mockumentary. If this show continues it’ll be one of the last still following the once ubiquitous trend. Trailer Park Boys in season 8 continues to follow the misadventures of three Canadian best friends, Juliana, Ricky, and Bubbles. With the entire cast from the original show returning, this is a major plus in recapturing the magic from past seasons. Season 8 opens with just that, the same type of lovable characters and shenanigans are still in full force here as the boys take on trying to get ownership of the trailer park they live in and love so much. Most of the jokes will appear to be driven through immature type humor, fart jokes, foul language and whatnot. Amongst the surface fanfare though there are actually several clever witticisms,

GVM | 25

mostly twisting words in incorrectly or divorcement from logical problem solving and resorting to petty crime. These crimes in the end are all harmless and not meant to be malicious. There is a strange sense of understanding in the crimes they commit and even some of them feel vindicated for the crimes considering the fact that they aren’t really hurting anyone or able to stay out of the grasp of the police for long. It is always just another lesson learned for the boys and another turn of the key on the jail cell. It’s all out of stupidity and any people dumb enough to reenact the type of social behavior they demonstrate deserve what they get. There is something wholesome about their intentions which is surprisingly very genuine and when reexamined, brilliant. These characters have heart, and in many ways, despite their lack of greater virtues or social graces, the virtues and love they show each other is reaffirming to the fact that good people live everywhere. And even living in a trailer park can feel like paradise every now and then. I would challenge most to give this show a try and see what it has. Past all the drug use and misdemeanors, there is something here very heart warming. This is not a show for smart people trying to feel smart, or anything deeply educational, but along the way you might just find yourself discovering other ways that people live. Trailer Park Boys, season 8, is out now on Netflix, as well as previous seasons from the past. Break out some brewskis, hockey sticks, your coke bottle glasses, and get ready to say ‘Aw-boat’. Final Grade: solid A. Welcome back, boys.
